Have you ever set out to help another and walked away feeling you were the one helped?

In my life, I have been making a point to always reach toward an underlining goal. My goal is actually two parts, first identify the platforms I have and second to use my platforms wisely!

As I reflect this year, I think about a few of my platforms (Husband, Father, Brother, Son, Uncle, Friend, Employer, Contractor, Parishioner, HBAL President) and I ask myself, “Have I used my platforms wisely?” or in other words “Have I made a difference that is noticed by God?” This year in particular, I have challenged myself to openly talk about God, inspire others to think about their relationship with God and be a reflection of God through my actions. This leads me to my opening question, “Have you ever set out to help another and walked away feeling you were the one helped?”

My platform with the HBAL presidency started out with my goals in mind. However, I soon realized I was the one benefiting most from my actions. The monthly President’s Message has given me an opportunity to reflect on my own journey with God, prayer before our board meetings has helped me keep God first in the daily routine and my goal of being a reflection of God has helped feel the love from others.

What a Blessing it has been, the enrichment I have received as a member of HBAL is something I could have never imagined. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your HBAL President.

We are very proud of the work the Young Building Professionals Council has put into their partnership with the Lighthouse by being positive role models for them and showing them the opportunities they have in residential construction.

Our Tribute to Youth event in April is when we honor high school students who show promise in Residential or Interior Design Contests. We also recognize younger students who show their imagination and creativity in the "If I Could Build A House" Art Contest.

HBAL works closely with other construction-related associations who can relate to the labor shortage we are experiencing.

The Nebraska Construction Industry Council continues to promote career opporunities available in construction via the BuildOurNebraska.com website and via newsletters to high school STS teachers and their students. Similarly, HBAL has created its own video which focuses more specifically on the careers in residential construction. We are looking forward to launching this video in early 2018 and using it to help promote the new job board on www.HBAL.org and the employment opportunities posted by our members.

"Inspiring Our Industry" was the theme at our September meeting.

This event allowed students and other representatives from The Career Academy, SCC Milford, UNL Construction Management and UNL College of Architecture to speak to our members on what their future holds and how we can be involved with their respective groups.

2017 YEAR IN REVIEW HBAL EVENTS:

Two new events were launched in 2017. YBP's Light the Way 5K in June was a great way to interact with the youth at the Lincoln Lighthouse as well as raise money to support their cause. 79 runners participated in our inaugural race and we look forward to next year's race on Saturday, June 23, 2018.

In September, HBAL members took on the members of the REALTORS Association of Lincoln with a round of Trivia. This event, although full of useless knowledge, provided a night full a laughs with friends and colleages.

Change is good, but so are traditions. The Nebraska Builders Home & Garden Show has been a Lincoln tradition for almost 46 years. You can count on the HBAL Golf Tournament to be held the first Friday of June each year. And the Remodelers Council Golf Tournament brought back the tradition of fun this past year with additional challenges like "Does a Bear Chip in the Woods?" and " 'Wich Hole?"

HBAL Christmas Party: Murder Mystery

Those who attended the HBAL Christmas party enjoyed a game of Clue. Guests were saddened to hear of the "death" of Matt Kleinschmit prior to the most recent board meeting. Thankfully, the clever team at Table 19 (Sara Olson and Amanda & Ben Carey) were able to solve the mystery. Whodunit? Why, it was Mr. Green with the candlestick in the Billard Room.

For the second year, we also played a round of Heads or Tails. Participants purchased beads in order to play the game. Anyone who had beads stood up and placed their hands on their head or on their tail. A coin was flipped and if you chose correctly you were still in the game. If you chose incorrectly, you had to remove a set of beads. Once you ran out of beads, you were out of the game. Thanks to all who participated! In all we raised $1,000 for the Foundation! This money will be used to support the community by contributing to community service projects focused on housing, as well as providing scholarships for students pursuing a career related to the building industry, and providing funding for other industry related educational and research programs.

Minute To Win It Thanks to all who came to the YBP Game Night at the Lighthouse!

Wow, what a journey this year has been! Thank you so much for allowing me the honor of leading such a great organization and for the continued commitment you all have to seeing it succeed!

I am so proud of the partnership we Tyler Reynolds formed with Lighthouse this year. I YBP President had so much fun with many of you last month at our first game night with the kids in a "Minute To Win It" style competition. It was so great to see their eyes light up as they cheered on their teammates and realized their own success. Afterwards, we had quite the exciting round of tag games: freeze tag, color tag, sharks & minnows, ultimate tag...who knew there were so many variations!? The kids loved it and it was a fun bonding experience as we ran around alongside them.

COOKIE FACE Each player placed a cookie on their forehead. The goal was to get the cookie into your mouth using only your facial muscles in under one minute. NO HANDS

While this year may be winding down, we are excited to kick off 2018 at our Holiday Party on January 25 where we will install Hayley Lane as this year's YBP President. See all the info on page 21.

We look forward to helping all of you grow professionally as we continue to provide networking and educational opportunities in 2018.
