President’s Message

Bo Jones, HBAL President Another year has come and gone, and my time as your HBAL president will be ending soon. Prior to joining HBAL back in 2002, I was hesitant. I wondered why anyone would want to join an association, sit in the same room with their biggest competitors and try to have conversations. Now, 16 years later, I am amazed at the work HBAL and its members do. They put their competitions aside and work together for the greater good. This Association is truly one of the best. The Lancaster County Board recently approved accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in AG zoning district. A few of the highlights of the approval are: 20 acre or larger parcel, total square-footage cannot exceed 1,000 square feet (this includes basement construction), no more than 2 bedrooms, the owner must live in one of the dwellings, ADU must share the same access point and share utilities with the principal dwelling. If you’d like more information about ADUs in Lancaster County, please contact Michaela at the HBAL office. We are hopeful with this text amendment allowing ADUs that people will start to look at building them. A big thank you to Matt Kinning for testifying on HBAL’s behalf at the public hearing. I would also like to thank Denny Van Horn, Matt Kinning, Ann Post and Michaela Harrison for continuing to meet with the City to work on the potential proposed sales tax for street funding. I hope you will join me on Monday, January 14 at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple as we install Denny Van Horn as our 2019 President. I’m confident Denny will continue to lead HBAL in the right direction and with our members’ best interests in mind. I wish you all the best in 2019!
