President’s Message

My fellow Home Builders, Happy Holidays or as we say at our house Hoppe Holidays.

If you missed the holiday party, you missed a good one. Eddie Brown and 402 rocked on. Julie and I and Staff and spouses pretty much were the last ones to leave. And we had fun. This is my last president’s message; next month I pass the gavel to Lori Wellman. Thanks to Michaela, Jennie and Laure I’m turning over presidency of a strong association. Our finances are good. We made money and kept on budget in 2022 in spite of the headwinds for housing. We have good reserves to carry us into the new year. Our Home and Garden Show beat every expectation. As the year started and Covid lingered, we worried how it would go, and it went off without a hitch. The Car Show was new and was a success. It is on the repeat calendar. Family Night was another big success. However, we missed doing an in person Santa Cop – one of my favorite things as a young HBAL member. My hope for Lori is that we, all of us home builders, can get together more often in 2023. Thanks again are truly in order for Michaela, Jennie and Laure. When we did the budget a year ago, we had no idea what the future would hold for associations as well for us homebuilders. Michaela committed to run the association with just the three staff members and we hardly missed a beat. Rest in peace Duane Larson, past president of HBAL, at age 97. He was a builder and developer and an awful lot of east Lincolnites live in a Larson home. Duane shared in his autobiography, Story of My Life, “I think I developed the first lots in Lincoln after the war [WW II]. I went to the city Mayor. He was part time Mayor Marti. He had the city engineer there. I explained I wanted to develop a piece of ground on 70th Street into 12 lots. He asked the engineer what he thought, and he said you are the mayor. The mayor said, go ahead. That was the only city approval we needed. We put in sewerage, water and paving.” As homebuilders, Duane was our legacy along with some of the other greats like Strauss Brothers, Peterson Construction, et. al.

Times have changed. Next year I become HOMEPAC chairman for HBAL. With City Council and Mayor elections, it will be a busy job. We have a good council for housing, and we need to keep it that way. When I call, send HOMEPAC a check. Thanks for the opportunity to be your President. I wish you all a happy new year. Let’s work 2023 toward a goal of every Lincolnite in a safe, secure, affordable home.

Sympathy

Our sympathy to Lynn & Lisa Larson, iSleep, on the death of Lynn's father, Duane Larson, who passed away December 12, 2022. Duane served as president of HBAL in 1968.

Our sympathy to Blake & Kathy Collingsworth, Tuscany Townhomes, on the death of Blake's mother, Gloria Collingsworth, who passed away on December 13, 2022.

Our sympathy to Rick & Marcia Willet, Willet Construction, Inc., Remodeling Specialists, on the death of Rick's sister, Kaye Cumro, who passed away on December 15, 2022.

Thank you for participating in Women Build 2023! Your support of this campaign and all of our builders is the perfect motivation to achieve great things this spring. Our volunteers will be picking up those hammers in a few months and building the homes for families who are currently in the selection process with Habitat. Families like Blanca and her four children. They will be moving into their new home in a few months and are looking forward to Blanca's partner joining them when he is stable following a traumatic head injury. The new home is ADA compliant and Blanca is thrilled to be able to have her own garden in the backyard.

Thank you for being a part of the impact that we are able to make not only for families like Blanca's but entire neighborhoods who now know the "power of she." Sincerely, Deanna Walz

Tell us about your family. I am a newlywed and proud mother of three almost adult children and two stepkids. We have one Boston Terrier and are adopting a new puppy in just a few weeks. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? I was in radio for over 20 years. One of my favorite celebrity encounters was with Lindsay Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac. I hung out and chatted with him for a half hour like we were friends. It was pretty cool and I got a great autograph. What's the strangest thing you've ever done? I don't know if it's strange, but it's pretty bold now that I look back on it. Right after college, I packed up my truck and moved from Illinois to Fargo, ND without knowing a soul for a radio job. I can't believe I had that level of confidence back then to just take off and start a life all by myself.

Who is someone who's made a big impact on your life? Why? Local acting/ directing legend, Judy Hart. She's taught me a lot about the importance of telling a good story, how to do it effectively, and how to really connect with an audience. If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? I would love to have dinner with Jimmy Carter and talk about his passion for Habitat.

To be considered for the next Member Spotlight, click here.

What do youlove the most about your job? I love that we are doing deep work to change communities. Homeownership not only helps the family who's moving into their home, but their futures and the entire neighborhood.

What career advice do you live by? Who gave it to you? Never turn down a chance to meet with someone. - Christine Weeks from Eleanor Creative. It's great advice because you never know how a connection can develop further.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be? Why? I would love to collaborate with Mike Smith from the Bay. He's constantly doing such cool, innovative things that enrich the community. And it's a great way to introduce young people to the building industry.

How has your career benefited from being a member of HBAL? The connections you can make with others in the industry is tremendous.

What is your favorite HBAL event and why? Chili Competition! Because it's a great way for everyone to socialize in a fun way. And I love chili and beer.

Any tips or advice for new HBAL members? Meet as many fellow members as you can and when you have an opportunity to help out another business, do it. We're stronger as a community when we can work together.

Publication of the Remodelers Council of Lincoln January 2023 • Vol. 26, No. 1

I am excited to be the Remodelers Council Chairperson for 2023. Thank you all for the nomination. I would especially like to thank Tim Zeng for his leadership in 2022. I also would like to recognize Jason Willet as this year's Vice Chair and Megan Dreyer as Secretary. This will be a great year.

The Remodelers Council provides an array of activities for members to promote their business and network with others in the industry. My focus this year will be our economy and how it affects our businesses. How can members of the Remodelers Council help each other? How can we pass on knowledge of the good times and the bad times to flourish in our businesses? How can we bring in more local companies to our group, not only to be members, but also to be involved? We as a group can only get stronger together. My goal for the coming year is to answer these questions and more.

The Nebraska Builders Home & Garden Show will be here before you know it. The Remodelers Council Food Bank House needs volunteers at the Show to help transport food items from the main entrance to the display. If you're interested in helping out, please contact the HBAL office.

Lighthouse Launching Trades/Industries Program

Lighthouse is launching a Trades/Industries Program (TIP) to help connect students of low-income families to trades and industry jobs through hands-on programs. Students as young as 15 will have an opportunity to participate and gain experience which can lead to careers in construction. This is a way to help break the poverty cycles in our community. Lighthouse will partner with many different companies to expose our families to plumbing, electrical, HVAC, construction, industry, and many others. Many of these jobs will do their own training and do not require college. This is a plus because the average cost of college is $50,000 and debt is a huge concern for many families. Help us in making a difference in the lives of our families struggling to make ends meet.

Lighthouse is currently looking for construction and trade partners who can provide our students basic hands-on instruction in your area of expertise. We would ask that partners dedicate 2-3 hours of time with our youth, typically between 4:00-6:00, one day each week. This program will begin in April and run through the beginning of May. We hope to hold a small job fair at the end of May to open the opportunity for summer work for our students and your companies. For more information or questions, please email Jeremy Trujillo: jtrujillo@lincolnlighthouse.org.

Are supply chain delays and labor shortages affecting your timing and ability to enter a home in the Parade of Homes? Do the dates of the Parade of Homes not work in your home completion schedules?

We have an opportunity for you! Instead of a traditional open house for the Parade of Homes, one of your previously completed homes can be included in the Parade guidebook as a video entry. It must be a home built by you within the last year and can be occupied.

For the $800 Parade entry fee, HBAL will help coordinate a professional videographer to film a 2–3-minute video (click here to preview videos we’ve created) of the home, and the entry will be featured on a half page in the Parade of Homes guidebook. Included will be a photo or rendering of the home, 7-10 bullet points describing the home and a QR code with a link to your video entry. The video
