President’s Message Justin Johnson HBAL President

Where has the summer gone? It’s hard to believe that in a few short weeks, school will already be starting back - my wife can’t wait! J It’s funny how kids often cry on the first day of school and moms usually cry on the last. I hope you all have had time to enjoy your summer with your families and maybe got a little vacation time as well. Now, as our tradition has become, the Hog Roast signifies the end of summer and the beginning of another school year. This year’s event is looking to be a great time with fun for all ages. We will also be launching our new HBAL logo that evening! So, be sure to attend and enter for a chance to win some great prizes. Recently, the City of Lincoln announced their plans for a new recycling ordinance which will go into effect in three stages. The first stage is banning recyclable cardboard from the landfills effective April 1, 2017. Newsprint will be banned effective April 1, 2018. Lastly, recyclable paper will be banned April 1, 2019. Recyclable cardboard is defined as: clean and dry corrugated cardboard consisting of three or more layers of paper material, at least one of which is rippled or corrugated, regardless of whether it has glue, staples or tape affixed, but not if it is permanently attached to other packing materials or non-paper liner. Please share your thoughts on this ordinance and how it may affect your business or bottom line by calling myself or Michaela at the HBAL office. Thank you for your membership and continued involvement with HBAL!

HBAL Membership Day | HBAL’s New Look

HBAL Membership Day About 20 members and prospects stopped by the HBAL Office on July 20 and enjoyed conversation and some good food while talking about what HBAL membership means to them. “I joined Home Builders 20 years ago and have met many great friends and created some of the best business contacts! There are so many ways to get to know people from the fun activities like the golf tournaments and Hog Roast to going to Remodelers Council lunches or the social hour before HBAL meetings. I’m most excited about the Young Building Professional’s group and helping those who are just getting started in our field make connections like I did.” - Lori Wellman, Lincoln Cabinet What does it mean to you? We’d love to hear! Send your testimonial to info@hbal.org.

Notice anything new about us? We are excited to start the transition over to our new HBAL logo! Members can take advantage by displaying this logo on company vehicles, websites, storefronts and more. Contact the HBAL office at info@hbal.org to request the digital file. For those of you who have been through this change, you understand it takes time to update websites and social media profiles. We also want to be conscious of the environment and use up our old stationary until it is depleted. Our goal is to have it all complete by the Ribbon Cutting on Thursday, September 8 at 11:30 a.m. We hope to see you there! 11  Lincoln Business Builder

Young Building Professionals Council

Midday Meetup Tuesday, August 23 at Noon Lunch is on your own. Locations are limited to 10 people each. The 4th Annual Hog Roast will be here before you know it! And what else goes better with some good BBQ than some fun yard games? Washers, ladder golf, bean bag toss…plus a bounce house for the kids. Bring your friends or bring your family. This is a great event for everyone!

Contact one of the following hosts to attend:

Matt Kinning YBP President

This fall will mark two years since we launched the Young Building Professionals Council. I have learned so much in those short two years and it will soon be time to pass the torch on to someone else. If you would like to serve as a YBP Officer in the future, feel free to chat with me or Andrea at one of our upcoming YBP or HBAL events. We’ve had lots of positive feedback on our Midday Meetups. If you’re interested in hosting a table, please let Andrea know. Otherwise, I hope you’ll take advantage of these networking opportunities. It’s a great opportunity to meet others in a casual small group setting. Have you heard the saying, “Association memberships are like gym memberships: just because you belong, it doesn’t guarantee you any results.” I encourage you to participate and get involved in HBAL whether you attend a big event like Big Red Night (September 12) or something on a smaller scale like a Midday Meetup (August 23) or Hard Hat Happy Hour (September 21). These are all great ways to meet others in the industry and make business connections.

Empire Fence and Netting Position: General Manager Phone: 402-540-7117 Email: loren@empire-fence.com Company Information: We are a family owned and operated fence and netting company specializing in all types of residential and commercial fence applications. We also install netting used for backstops, kicking nets and batting cages, as well as staining fences and decks. What has made us stand out is our ability to deliver a great product with great customer service at a reasonable cost. How did you get started in the business? I grew up on a dairy farm southeast of Lincoln so I have been familiar with installing fence my whole life. After college I worked for a local company for a few years. I had a few various jobs in between but felt I always had a passion for fence. Whether it being installing fence or meeting new customers, I enjoy the relationships I get to develop on a daily basis. Favorite Song: Ice Ice Baby (I’m an 80’s kid, sorry) Favorite Books: Hatchet, American Sniper, Hero of the Underground Favorite Movie: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Any Given Sunday Favorite TV shows: Walking Dead, Alone Favorite local restaurant: Lazlos, Phat Jacks What do you find rewarding: Seeing a customer satisfied knowing that we did exactly what we promised them. Biggest challenge in life: Balancing work load with raising a family. What inspires you: My wife is finishing school to be a teacher and seeing how hard she works everyday to achieve her dream while still finding the time to do everything she can for our family reminds me how lucky I am. No matter what obstacles present themselves, nothing is out of reach with hard work. What did you want to be when you grew up? Professional basketball player Pet Peeve: Hearing people clip their fingernails Bad Habit: Swearing First thing I do in the morning: Kiss my wife and son goodbye while they’re still sleeping Favorite vacation spot: Bahamas Favorite thing to do on a day off? Relax and hang out with my family, head to the golf course or the lake. Greatest Hero: My son, seeing his imagination and sense of wonder reminds me on a daily basis to keep dreaming. Childhood fear: Monsters under my bed and you have to jump from 5 feet away to get in Family: Wife, Kimberly and our son, Peyton Greatest accomplishment: Raising our 3-year-old son and seeing what a smart, daring, sweet little man he has become. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? I broke my leg right after graduating high school and now have a titanium rod inserted into my tibia bone. If you could have a super power, what would it be? Flying What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? Being able to hit a golf ball 340 yards Which talent would you most like to have? To be able to sing If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? Michael Jordan
