Growing up, my Dad emphasized the importance of benevolence. He often said, “If we live in a community with a shared well, we all have responsibility for the care of that well.” Webster’s dictionary defines benevolence as the desire to do good for others; goodwill; charitableness. Confucius said: “Benevolence is the characteristic element of humanity.” From my early involvement with HBAL, I have always been in awe of the good HBAL members have done within our community. The desire and drive to “rally the troops” to help those in need and to serve our community, is a strong attribute of our association and members. Witness the giving back to our community through the HBAL Care Foundation. Since the Foundation’s inception, over $175,000 has gone back to our community and beyond. HBAL is currently building our 17th home for Habitat for Humanity. This home will be purchased and occupied by Martha and her 8 children. A home that will provide a place for this family to grow, establish family traditions, and make many dreams come true. All this is a result of the care and generosity of HBAL and our members. HBAL has also committed to help a family remodel their home to meet the needs of their young son with a terminal illness. I encourage HBAL members donate to the Care Foundation specifically for this project. Please see further information on page 21 of this issue of the Business Builder. Mother Teresa summed it up when she said: “It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.” Thank you to the many HBAL members who have and will participate in these efforts. I want to personally thank every member of HBAL and the staff for supporting the work we do to pay back to our community. We can all be proud of our history of benevolence and giving. A few dates and activities to put on your calendar include the dedication of the Habitat Home in mid-July and the YBP/Remodelers Council Hard Hat Happy Hour on July 16 at Lincoln Cabinet from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. I hope you and your family will attend the HBAL Family Fun Night on Friday, August 9. This is a wonderful free family gathering and HBAL’s way of saying thank you to all our members. Happy and Safe Building

A Better Home for Hunter

A Better Home for Hunter The Home Builders Association of Lincoln is seeking donations to help complete a home remodel for Hunter Whisler, a young boy diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). DMD is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. Mike Kinning has given much of his time and talent to this project and asked for HBAL’s help with the $15,000 in expected costs to finish the project beyond the donations already received. “I feel that we, as an organization, have the ability and network to help the Whislers and hope we can assist Randy and Natalie with the burden this young family is facing,” Mike Kinning said. “My family is blessed to be healthy and we take that for granted! To be a parent of a child with this prognosis and the challenges they will face medically, financially plus emotionally in the years to come is unimaginable! It tugged at my heart and I felt compelled to help.” If you would like to contribute to this project, you can mail your tax-deductible donation to the Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation, 6100 S. 58th Street, Ste. C, Lincoln, NE 68516. • Early in life, boys with Duchenne develop more slowly— sitting up, standing, walking and talking. • Boys with Duchenne typically lose their ability to walk between the ages of 8 and 14. • By their late teens, young men lose their upper body strength, including the use of their arms. • During their teenage years, young men with Duchenne will need a respirator to help them breathe at night. Eventually, they will need constant support. • Cardiac problems will develop and can start early or during the teenage years. • Duchenne is always fatal.
