President’s Message

Herb Reese, HBAL President I would like to recognize all those who have been working hard to reschedule and in many ways, reinvent, our HBAL events. The Spring Parade of Homes will be occurring on June 21-28. Although there is a chance we may have to adjust the hours the homes are scheduled to be open, we have already launched the online guidebook which will include virtual tours for the entries. The Parade is crucial in showcasing the craftsmanship and dedication it takes to build these homes. As of now the HBAL Golf Tournament is scheduled for June 19. We are expecting a good turn out as like myself, many people are looking for any chance to get out of their house! The last change to note is the Tour of Remodeled Homes which is postponed for later this fall. When reflecting on the changes occurring day to day, it reminds me of building a house. When first starting you have your plans and set schedule. As you begin to build, something always seems to take a bit longer than you expected. This sets your schedule back a bit. Then as you continue something doesn’t work out, and you have to scrap your original plans and you have to reorganize and reinvent. Even with all the new plans, rescheduling and redesigning, we as homebuilders still get it done. Instead of focusing on all of the changes happening, I challenge you to reflect after each day and ask yourself two questions, “What was I able to get done today? How did I help my community today?” I look forward this month to the Spring Parade of Homes and the annual golf tournament! Thank you to everyone for your patience as we work through these changes.

Message from Lincoln Water System:

Damaged Water Main Valve Boxes Home Builders Association of Lincoln Members, It has come to our attention that several water main valve boxes have been damaged during new housing construction. Our field crews are identifying the sources as concrete prep work (sidewalks, driveway approaches), final grading prep work for seed/sod and underground sprinkler installation. We are sending you all a friendly reminder to inform these contractors of the mentioned issues. If this type of work is being performed in the city right of way, they are required to make contact with 811 (one-call) diggers hotline for locating those noted utilities. Lincoln’s water main valve boxes are approximately 6” in diameter and would be located when a one-call is requested. If a valve box is discovered by a contractor performing work, and it needs some adjustment, we would like to be notified. There is no charge for this service and we would make the necessary adjustment without question. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our office at 402-441-5921. Thanks! Andy Walker Assistant Superintendent Water Construction Lincoln Water System

Please consider a contribution to the Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation when designating memorials. Funds go to scholarships and awards for students who want to be involved in the construction industry. Gifts can also be designated as a specific scholarship to be awarded to worthy students who plan to enter our industry. Gifts are tax deductible to this 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Please contact Bob Bryant (402-486-1040) or the HBAL Office (402-423-4225) if you have questions. 5  Lincoln Business Builder

Spring Parade of Homes

COVID-19 Guidelines for Parade of Homes While taking part in the Spring Parade of Homes, safety measures to protect the general public will not be taken lightly. As an attendee of the event, we ask that you follow these guidelines: • Stay home if you are potentially sick. Those displaying COVID-19 symptoms may not be granted access to the home. • It is suggested seniors and persons with compromised immune systems not attend this event due to risk of infection. Please contact the builder to schedule a private showing. • Due to the limit of 10 people allowed in a home at a time and the nature of children to touch surfaces, we ask that children not attend this event. • Maintain 6’ social distancing guidelines while waiting to enter the home, talking to those working in the home and while touring the home (including while following directional signs inside). This may require waiting to enter a hallway or a room until the group ahead of you has left the area. • Refrain from touching surfaces and handles in the home. • Make sure to wear/bring socks with you as you will be asked to slip your shoes off and carry them through the home. If you do not have socks on you may not be allowed to enter a home. Consider bringing a bag to carry your shoes if it is raining. • All visitors must wear a face covering to enter the Parade Homes.

The Home Builders Association of Lincoln is requiring all event participants showing a home to take the following steps for their safety as well as the safety of the public to prevent the spread of COVID-19: • We encourage those working the Parade home to wear a face covering. • Limit the number of people in the home at one time to 10, no groups larger than four. We prefer no more than five couples of two at one time. • Attendees may have one way in and a separate way out to maintain social distancing guidelines (follow directional signs in the home). • Builders are encouraged to leave on all lights as well as open all doors to minimize contamination. • Frequently touched areas such as countertops, door knobs, stair rails, display areas, etc. will be cleaned and disinfected often. Wipe down commonly touched surfaces with disinfectant every hour during high traffic and every four hours when little to no traffic. Your interest and participation in the event is greatly appreciated. We hope you enjoy the Parade while still being mindful of the current health situation we find ourselves in. If you do not feel comfortable viewing the homes on this year’s event, please contact any of the Builders directly or visit www.HBAL.org to view the online guidebook and virtual tours of the Parade of Homes.

Thank You!

Thanks to the members listed below, we now have the signs for our Parade of Homes and Tour of Remodeled Homes stored at the HBAL office! We look forward to doing sign handout at the office! We also want to thank Millard Lumber Inc. and 84 Lumber for storing the signs for the last 15+ years. In my last message, I talked a little bit about ‘change’ and how all of us have had to make some personal and business related changes due to COVID-19. I will admit I am completely guilty of not adapting well to change sometimes, especially when it involves my personal life. With that being said, I suppose it is time for me to learn how to accept a BIG life change and Kristin Sims adapt to it quickly because my YBP President husband and I will be moving to… the hot barren desert of ARIZONA! I am sure this might come as a surprise to many of you – it did to us as well! I would have never imagined that I would be moving away from Lincoln, a familiar and comfortable place to live and more importantly, a place where I grew up. Lincoln is all I’ve ever known. Although I attended college at UNK for four years, Kearney was only two hours away from home. I am grateful for my college years giving me a taste of what it was like ‘being away from home,’ but still having the convenience of being able to easily come back home on weekends to see my parents, grandparents, friends, etc. Now I get to look forward to flights or a convenient 21-hour drive (one way) to come home! We are truly excited for this new opportunity and we will miss Lincoln a lot. I am very grateful to have met so many amazing colleagues and friends through Home Builders, Remodelers Council and YBP throughout these past nine years. Becoming an active member of HBAL was one of the best decisions of my career. I will certainly miss seeing all of you at events and meetings and I am sure you will miss my horrible jokes and sense of humor. Who knows what the future holds. Maybe we will get tired of the scorpions (SAVE ME), and rattlesnakes (SAVE ME, AGAIN) and 24/7 sunny weather and you will see my smiling face again someday..!? If I don’t see all of you before I leave, I wish you the very best and please be sure to stay in touch!

“Socially Distant” Picnic in the Park June 10, 2020 • 11:30 a.m. Antelope Park • near Shelter #2

by Heidi Polacek

At the time I’m writing this, we are just coming off the Memorial Day weekend. Things are starting to open back up and we are getting a taste of what our new normal will look like. Events like the Spring Parade of Homes and the HBAL Golf Tournament are on track to take place and we are looking forward to seeing you all at the Remodelers Council Picnic on Wednesday, June 10.

Shelter #2

T

In addition to our picnic in June, we are working on our Fall lineup of events. As with most things, we’re making adjustments to ensure the safety of those who attend, so we ask that you read carefully the information presented in our newsletter (The Lincoln Business Builder) and in the HBAL Update emails. For our picnic in June, we won’t be able to rent the shelter like in years past. Instead, we ask that you bring a lawn chair and meet us by our usual spot (Antelope Park Shelter #2).
