President’s Message Matt Kinning, HBAL President

The HBAL Golf Outing is always one of my favorite HBAL events. Unfortunately, I will miss this year’s tournament, but I invite you to head out to the course over lunch to grab a burger and Lanny’s famous beans Ruth makes each year! We have set up our first quarterly meeting with the Building & Safety Department. We will be discussing any changes members see in code enforcement with their staff. Please reach out to me or any of our volunteer leadership with any issues you are dealing with or have seen. We expect to see changes from the Planning Department dealing with zoning codes which may affect housing affordability. Ann Post and I have been invited to be a part of a stakeholder group to review the proposed changes. We will keep you informed of how the process proceeds. Taylor Wyatt, Ann Post, Denny Van Horn, Herb Reese and I recently met with LES about their pilot program to install conduit for delivering power to new construction. They shared they have removed their implementation deadline as they continue to work through the process and deal with difficulties they have run into with their pilot program. I hope you have a great start to your summer!

Lead Hazard Control Program

City of Lincoln Seeks Contractors for Lead Hazard Control Program Projects The City of Lincoln, through its Urban Development Department, has received a three-year, $3 Million Lead Hazard Control Grant and is seeking contractors interested in participating in housing rehab projects to complete interim control or abatement of lead based paint. The City estimates 165 projects over the next three years in residential housing units built prior to 1978 and with at least one child under the age of 6. City Purchasing will be issuing a unit price bid and successful bidders will be placed on an approved contractor list. As projects are identified by the City, contractors on the list will be contacted for availability and a quote. Work is for construction only, lead testing will be completed by the City. Training is required to work on these projects and will be paid by the City of Lincoln. Every contractor will be required to be licensed by the State of Nebraska as a lead abatement firm which requires the company to have at least one statelicensed lead supervisor. Lead Supervisor training is 32 hours over four days. All workers must have received at least one-day HUD/EPA approved lead paint safety training; workers who assist with abatement must have completed twoday lead worker training. All contractors must also be EPA Certified Renovation Firms with at least one certified renovator. Training will be scheduled as contractors are identified.

I would like to personally thank all the HBAL members who attended or contributed to the fundraiser we hosted at the Dog House on May 15 for Rick Pickel who has been battling pancreatic cancer. Rick had a 30+ year career in construction in Lincoln and was part of the Southeast Rural Fire Department for 20 years. Rick and his wife, Sue, are raising their three grandchildren who they have adopted. Thanks to your generosity, we raised almost $20,000 to help Rick and his family. Happy Hour I hope everyone's summer is off to a great start! It really is an unprecedented time in our industry as we are all juggling more work than normal. As Sam Swartz busy as everyone is, YBP President we were still able to have a YBP officers meeting in May. Our focus for the meeting was putting together our plan for a Spring 2022 car show fundraiser. We have a lot of great ideas to make the show a big success but we need more help. We have two positions we would like to fill on the Car Show Committee, so if you would like to get involved please contact Andrea. We encourage all HBAL members (not just YBP members) to come network with the Young Building Professionals at the Hard Hat Happy Hour on June 17 at Aristos Apartments. We know summer is a busy time, but we hope you'll make networking a part of your schedule!

Remodelers Council

Picnic in the Park Publication of the Remodelers Council of Lincoln June 2021 • Vol. 24, No. 6

With Spring in Nebraska, you just never know what kind of weather you’re going to get. That hasn’t slowed down business in our office. We are off to another good year. I hope everyone can say the same. I have been Sue Eaton busy myself at home with Remodelers Council mowing, planting flowers Chairperson and a garden. I enjoy being outside and playing in the dirt. We had a fun start to the month with having our meeting on Cinco de Mayo. Eastmont provided us with a delicious Mexican lunch, then took us on a tour of the renovations they have made which are part of their $50 million redevelopment plan. Hopefully we can take another tour once the project is complete. Join us June 23 for our annual picnic at Antelope Park and on August 20 for the Remodelers Golf Tournament at Holmes Golf Course. Don’t delay getting your team signed up as the tournament fills up fast. If you want to get out of the office but don’t want to play, we have opportunities to be a hole sponsor or volunteer.
