Success!!! Great thanks to the entire HBAL Membership who helped to make the 45th Annual Nebraska Builders Home and Garden Show the most successful show ever held! Over 275 exhibitors, along with great weather, brought out a high attendance. Special thanks to the HBAL staff and volunteers for their vision and their professionalism ensuring this success.

Appreciation!!! I am so thankful for all the friendships that I have made participating in HBAL events. My personality proves to be a bit timid causing me to hold back from simply visiting with others. I have found that opening up a little has really elevated my self esteem and I can honestly say I am enjoying life more than I ever have. The camaraderie within HBAL is one of the greatest assets that HBAL has to offer. Don’t get me wrong, HBAL does an enormous amount of good for our industry, however elevating one’s way of life is something to be noted.

Comaraderie!!! I wanted to share something I recently read: “We are made to be in relationships – to bless and to be blessed by the care and companionship offered by others.

God wants us to be in friendships that bring joy into our lives, that bring us closer to him, and that make us better people.” I challenge you, as I challenge myself, to loosen up a bit and just have fun with others by looking at your immediate schedule and extending an invitation to someone. I promise you the warmth of a friend goes a long way.

On the horizon… On March 13, HBAL will be hosting the 9th Annual Chili Cook Off. FYI, the Chili Cook Off replaced a general membership meeting with a fun and interactive atmosphere. To ensure this fun atmosphere, the HBAL staff has put together plenty of door prizes, balloon creations for the kids and delicious cinnamon rolls to go along with the chili.

As this will be my first year attending, I encourage you to join in the fun and visit with your colleagues and friends and please bring the whole family.

Dr. Joel to Speak at Tribute to Youth Dr. Steve Joel will be the guest speaker at our annual Tribute to Youth event on Monday, April 10. This annual event honors the winners of our Interior and Residential Design Contest and the “If I Could Build a House” Art Contest. (see pages 17 and 18 for a list of winners.) The future of building is in the hands of these young people who are showing an interest in interior or residential design or simply drawing the home of their dreams. We hope you join us on April 10 as we pay tribute to youth!

In 2010, Dr. Steve Joel joined Lincoln Public Schools as superintendent. Previously, he served for ten years as superintendent in Grand Island and eight years in Beatrice. A native of Long Island, New York, he has degrees from Doane College, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Kansas State University.

Dr. Joel has been honored with a wide variety of awards and distinctions including: Nebraska Superintendent of the Year and Leadership Excellence by the Educational Resource Development Institute.

He also has been active in many community clubs and coalitions, and serves on a number of boards including the Chamber of Commerce, Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools, Lincoln Community Foundation, The Career Academy and President of the United Way of Lincoln and Lancaster County Board.

In his time as superintendent at various school districts, Dr. Joel has focused on comprehensive solutions to significant school and community issues. The immigration raid in Grand Island led to the formation of a community coalition to begin the arduous process of rebuilding community unity, and the tragic fire that resulted in a complete loss of the Lincoln Public Schools District Office allowed for the construction of a new facility. More recently, Lincoln has grown rapidly to include almost 41,000 students and 8,000 staff members. With Dr. Joel’s leadership, Lincoln Public Schools has adopted a comprehensive instructional technology plan and developed The Career Academy leading Nebraska into the next phase of K12 education.

Tour of Remodeled Homes Saturday & Sunday • April 29 & 30, 2017 12 noon to 5 p.m.

Remodeler’s Contract I.

Entry deadline Friday, March 10, 2017.

A. First entry fee is $550.

B. Additional entries are $350.

C. HBAL members not belonging to the Remodelers Council will pay an additional $75 per entry.

II. I agree to submit all of the following additional materials by Friday, March 10, 2017:

A. Information sheet about the project giving a description and a map showing the location of the entry.

B. Photo or drawing of the completed project.

III. The project must showcase a change in shape, form, or function of the residence, and not have been shown to the public before.

IV. The purpose of the Tour of Remodeled Homes is to increase

exposure of our participating mem­bers; to promote a more professional image and increase our credibility; to benefit the public by stimulating an interest in remodeling existing homes; and to showcase our quality workmanship and new products while increasing the membership of the Remodelers Council.

V.

I agree to provide at least two people, with one person in each of the remodeled areas, the full hours of the Tour of Remodeled Homes.

VI. I agree not to open the entered home to the public prior to the Tour of Remodeled Homes.

Cardboard Recycling

Cardboard Recycling

The corrugated cardboard ban, effective April 1, 2018, will be a contributing factor to achieving waste disposal reduction goals.

• Corrugated cardboard is defined as three or more layers of paper with at least one layer of rippled, or corrugated, paper.

• It is the largest single recyclable disposed of in the Bluff Road Landfill, making up 9.5% of the waste that haulers take to the landfill.

• Corrugated cardboard will now be treated similarly to other materials banned from the landfill, such as diverting tires, batteries, appliances, and yard waste (seasonally).

There are significant benefits, locally and globally, to recycling right and recycling often.

• Locally, recycling reduces the need for expensive landfill expansions by saving landfill space, generating material sales revenue, and creating local jobs.

• Globally, recycling helps conserve natural resources and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

When will the landfill ban on corrugated cardboard take effect?

The corrugated cardboard disposal ban will begin April 1, 2018.

What type of cardboard will be banned from disposal in the Bluff Road Landfill?

Corrugated cardboard will be banned from disposal in the Bluff Road Landfill. However, corrugated cardboard soiled with food wastes/oils, or that is completely wet, can be disposed of at the landfill.

Why target corrugated cardboard?

Corrugated cardboard is the largest single recyclable material disposed of in the Bluff Road Landfill, making up roughly 9.5% of the waste that haulers take to the landfill. It is also a recyclable material that has both a high commodity value and a stable endmarket.

Who will be affected by the disposal ban on corrugated cardboard?

Everyone who has their waste hauled to the Bluff Road Landfill will be affected by the disposal ban.

Can a business take corrugated cardboard boxes to one of the recycling drop-off sites?

The recycling drop-off sites are for the benefit of residents. Businesses should contact recycling collectors to sign up for collection services,or take corrugated cardboard and other recyclables directly to recycling processors.

How will the corrugated cardboard disposal ban be enforced?

Waste haulers have an obligation to ensure they are not placing recyclable corrugated cardboard in their trucks destined for the Bluff Road Landfill.

Personnel at the landfill will monitor the wastes brought to the landfill and require any recyclable corrugated cardboard to be removed. If a driver does not remove recyclable corrugated cardboard before arriving at the landfill, they will have the opportunity to personally remove it from their load into containers at the landfill or be assessed an unacceptable load fee of $100.

Will a resident be ticketed if they place corrugated cardboard in the trash?

A resident will not be ticketed directly by the City. Residents should check with their waste hauler to determine if the hauler will charge additional fees if recyclable corrugated cardboard is found in the trash.

Will a landlord or business be ticketed if someone dumps corrugated cardboard in the trash container at their property or worksite?

Landlords and businesses should contact their waste haulers to determine if they will be charged additional fees if recyclable corrugated cardboard is found in the trash containers. The City will not directly ticket landlords or businesses.

What should a resident do with corrugated cardboard?

• Reuse it, if possible.

• Recycle it at one of the public recycling drop-off sites.

• Sign up for a recycling collection service.

Can corrugated cardboard that has wood or Styrofoam glued to it be placed in the trash?

Yes, if the wood or Styrofoam cannot be separated from the corrugated cardboard.

What other communities have prohibited cardboard from landfill disposal?

Lincoln is the first community in Nebraska to ban the disposal of corrugated cardboard in its landfill. In neighboring states, Linn County (Cedar Rapids), IA, Fort Collins, CO and Sioux Falls, SD have banned the disposal of cardboard. The states of California, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, and Vermont have banned the disposal of cardboard.

What will it cost to recycle corrugated cardboard?

There is no charge to recycle cardboard at a public recycling drop-off site. Recycling collectors will charge a fee for collecting recyclables at your home or business. Costs may vary between recycling collectors.

Recycling collection subscription fees for a household could range from $7 to $12 per month.

Do public recycling drop-off sites have enough capacity to handle increased volumes of corrugated cardboard?

Larger containers will be placed at drop-off sites, and the containers will be emptied more often to ensure residents can recycle their cardboard.

Don’t Hope Friend… Decide!

While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport in Portland, Oregon, I had one of those life changing experiences that you hear other people talk about. You know, the kind that sneaks up on you unexpectedly? Well, this one occurred a mere two feet away from me!

of unconditional love not more than an arm’s length away from me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I were invading something sacred, but was amazed to hear my own voice nervously ask, “Wow! How long have you two been married?”

Straining to locate my friend among the passengers deplaning through the jetway, I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family.

“Been together fourteen years total, married twelve of those.” he replied without breaking his gaze from his lovely wife’s face. “Well then, how long have you been away?” I asked. The man finally looked at me, still beaming his joyous smile and told me, “Two whole days!”

First, he motioned to his youngest son (maybe six years old) as he laid down his bags. They gave each other a long, and movingly loving hug. As they separated enough to look in each other’s face, I heard the father say, “It’s so good to see you, son. I missed you so much!” His son smiled somewhat shyly, diverted his eyes, and replied softly, “Me too, Dad!” Then the man stood up, gazed in the eyes of his oldest son (maybe 9 or 10) and while cupping his son’s face in his hands he said, “You’re already quite the young man. I love you very much Zach!”

They too hugged a most loving, tender hug. His son said nothing.

No reply was necessary.

While this was happening, a baby girl (perhaps one or one and a half ) was squirming excitedly in her mother’s arms, never once taking her little eyes off the wonderful sight of her returning father.

The man said, “Hi babygirl!” as he gently took the child from her mother. He quickly kissed her face all over and then held her close to his chest while rocking her from side to side. The little girl instantly relaxed and simply laid her head on his shoulder and remained motionless in total pure contentment.

After several moments, he handed his daughter to his oldest son and declared, “I’ve saved the best for last!” and proceeded to give his wife the longest, most passionate kiss I ever remember seeing. He gazed into her eyes for several seconds and then silently mouthed, “I love you so much!.” They stared into each other’s eyes, beaming big smiles at one another, while holding both hands. For an instant, they reminded me of newlyweds but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn’t be. I puzzled about it for a moment, then realized how totally engrossed I was in the wonderful display

Two days?! I was stunned! I was certain by the intensity of the greeting I just witnessed that he’d been gone for at least several weeks, if not months, and I know my expression betrayed me. So I said almost offhandedly, hoping to end my intrusion with some semblance of grace (and to get back to searching for my friend), “I hope my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years!”

The man suddenly stopped smiling. He looked me straight in the eye, and with an intensity that burned right into my soul, he told me something that left me a different person. He told me, “Don’t hope friend…decide.” Then he flashed me his wonderful smile again, shook my hand and said, “God bless!.” With that, he and his family turned and energetically strode away together.

I was still watching that exceptional man and his special family walk just out of sight when my friend came up to me and asked, “What’cha looking at?” Without hesitating, and with a curious sense of certainty, I replied, “My future!” © Copyright 1997 by Michael D. Hargrove. All rights reserved.

If I Could Build A House Art Contest

I LD A HOUSE U B D L U O C I IF ART CONTEST The Home Builders Association of Lincoln is excited to announce the return of its “If I Could Build a House” art contest in cooperation with Lincoln Public Schools.

Children were asked to draw pictures of their dream homes. The children also wrote narratives to describe the homes.

These YBP President lunches are a great way to connect with other people in the industry on a smaller scale and get to know each other in a laid back environment.
