President’s Message

Herb Reese, HBAL President Last month was the 48th year for the Nebraska Builders Home & Garden Show. I have been participating in the Home & Garden Show for over 30 years, and each year I am amazed at the growth that has occurred. The success of this year’s show could not have been achieved without the dedicated work of Michaela, Jennie, Laure, Andrea and Meri. I would like to thank them for all their hard work. Their efforts paid off as the attendance numbers were up this year and the feedback from the vendors was positive. The Home & Garden Show is one of my favorite events of the year. I enjoy interacting with the other vendors as well as the clientele who pass through during the weekend. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Home & Garden Show and helped make this year a great success. Early in February, there was a hearing at the State Capitol regarding LB 743. If passed as proposed, this bill will update the State of Nebraska to the 2020 National Electrical Code. This new code will increase the cost of new construction and remodeling. Thank you to Fred Hoppe for testifying against this bill on behalf of HBAL. Matt Kinning and Erin Magnussen have been working earnestly to amend portions of the 2018 Energy Code from our local building code in Lincoln. In this code there are elements impacting housing affordability. Thank you to Matt Kinning and Erin Magnussen for their work on the Building Code Task Force Committee. It is crucial for all of us to be involved and knowledgeable about the bills in the legislature affecting the homebuilding industry. We need to all be proactive and speak up when there are problems affecting our business. The Home Builders Association of Lincoln is a great resource for us all and helps us stay up to date on these changes. I am proud to see members of this association stand up for fair regulation changes.

Young Building Professionals

Midday Meetup at HBAL When I was reminded to write my message this month, it felt like I had just written my February message a few days ago. Why does it always feel like January goes on for what seems like an eternity and February lasts for a short 5 days? If it wasn’t for the Home & Garden Show in February, I am sure January would just blend into March and I would overlook the entire month Kristin Sims of February! I know my husband YBP President would like to forget February completely since he is a Broncos fan and we all know how well Chiefs and Broncos fans get along… I hope everyone is having a wonderful and successful start to the year! It’s hard to believe it’s already March and the Home & Garden Show has passed. From all of the feedback we’ve received, the show was a huge success. Thank you to all of the exhibitors and volunteers for your continued support and dedication in making it successful again this year. It was great to see several YBP members involved at the show as well. Looking ahead on the YBP calendar, our next event will be a Midday Meetup on March 24 at the HBAL office. Career Coach Sarah Collins will be our guest speaker. This will be a casual and fun opportunity to take a break from the office and network with other young professionals in the industry while getting some great life advise. Please be sure to check your e-mails for more details on the Midday Meetup and other upcoming events throughout the year. Hope to see you there!

Remodelers Council

March Meeting Publication of the Remodelers Council of Lincoln March 2020 • Vol. 23, No. 3

Chairperson’s Message by Heidi Polacek

The 2020 Home & Garden Show is in the books. Thanks to everyone who made it a success again this year! The Remodelors Council Food Bank House was also a success. We collected 2,547 pounds of food and $248, which equates to 3,700 meals for local families. Thanks to all who brought donations and who volunteered this year! March also brings the deadline for the Tour of Remodeled Homes. This is a fun event where you can show off your work to hundreds of people all in one weekend! If you don’t have your registration in, it’s due March 6! The Tour dates are April 25 and 26. The next Remodelors Council meeting in March 4. We are touring the old Post & Nickel building which is now the home of Chase Bank, Lululemon, Madida and The Post Lofts. Join us to see what is happening there! Dear Friends of the Food Bank, Thanks for your gift of 3,547 pounds of food to the Food Bank of Lincoln. We are grateful. We are on track to have a record year in pursuit of our mission to alleviate hunger in Southeast Nebraska. We are busy connecting thousands of people with meals each week through collaborations with 55 non-profit partners, our 90+ school partners, our Mobile Pantry operations, our SNAP Outreach efforts and our Lincoln Fresh Program. Our Bridges Out of Poverty and Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin’ by World efforts are helping more and more households gain financial stability. We could not do it without our generous friends like you. We continue to expand existing programs and explore innovations to better serve our 16-county service area. 2020 promises to be both challenging and inspiring for the Food Bank and our partners. Thanks. We promise to put your gift to good use. Best regards, Scott Young Food Bank of Lincoln 22  Lincoln Business Builder
