I think Spring is FINALLY here and that means the Spring Parade of Homes is not far off. I hope you are able to take some time to visit some of the beautiful homes on display. Even if you’re not in the market for a new home, it is still fun to see what is new and trending in home design. On May 5, HBAL will be hosting a Construction Career Day at Southeast Community College at 88th & O Streets. Middle and high school students are encouraged to attend this event to visit with companies and learn about the opportunities available to them. You can find more information about this event on pages 10 and 11 or you can contact Jereme Montgomery at 402-525-5535 with any questions. The Primary Election is on Tuesday, May 15. As Americans, it is important we take the time to educate ourselves on the candidates and vote. If you would like to know who HBAL supports in upcoming elections, please feel free to call the HBAL office. HBAL’s political action committee (HOMEPAC) has interviewed candidates and financially supports those who they feel will positively impact housing in Lincoln. We are excited to launch a fundraiser to support HOMEPAC. HBAL members will have the opportunity to purchase apparel from Art F/X with the HBAL logo embroidered on the sleeve. All of the proceeds from this sale will go towards HOMEPAC. We opted to have the logo on the sleeve so you can add your own logo on the front at a later time. Watch your email for specific instructions on how to order your apparel and a link to the online portal. The portal will be open May 7-21. We have lots of events coming up this summer, so be sure to read through this issue and mark your calendar for the events that most interest you.

City of Lincoln Going to Electronic Submittals for Individual Lot Notice of Intent (INOI) Effective May 14, 2018, prior to obtaining a building permit, applicants will be required to electronically submit INOI (Individual Lot Notice of Intent) forms and provide proof of INOI authorization. The City of Lincoln will no longer accept paper INOI applications. INOI applications are erosion and sediment control applications for individual lots (mostly residential) that are part of a common plan of development (subdivision). The review of the INOI permit is an added task for the City of Lincoln’s Building and Safety Department permit review team. The acceptance of electronic submittals should reduce the applicant's time at the Building and Safety counter as well as reduce staff processing time into the permit tracking software. Applicants will fill out the INOI form through a web based Accela portal. A valid email address is required to utilize the on-line submittal system and to receive the authorization. Failure to fill out all required fields will result in an incomplete submission and the application will not be accepted. Upon City approval, an authorization letter will be sent to the applicant’s email address provided on the form. The letter will state earth disturbing activities are authorized for the address filed.

The Builders Choice for High Quality Landscaping • Brick Paver Patios • Trees/Shrubs/Perennials • Mulch/River Rock • Flagstone • Landscape Lighting

• Retaining Walls • Berms/Boulders • Firepits • Outdoor Kitchens • Commercial Snow Removal

The authorization letter can then be printed or shown via electronic device at the Building and Safety counter when applying for the Building Permit. A step-by-step tutorial will be provided on the Watershed INOI website (lincoln.ne.gov keyword: INOI).

If you have any questions regarding this process, please contact Watershed Management at (402) 309-5936.

Tribute toYouth April 9, 2018 • Yankee Hill Country Club

On Monday, April 9, the Home Builders Association of Lincoln honored local youth who participated in the High School Interior Design and CAD Residential Design Contest, Elementary "If I Could Build A House" Art Contest as well as scholarship winners. The guest speaker for the evening was Bill Michener, Executive Director of the Lincoln Lighthouse. 12 ď ´ Lincoln Business Builder

Tribute to Youth

Among the honored guests at Tribute to Youth were six students from Lincoln Lighthouse. HBAL's Young Building Professionals are working closely with these students and others from the Lighthouse to set an example of what the future could hold for them specifically in the field of residential construction. HBAL has also recently participated in a weekly visit from Lighthouse students through The Career Academy. During these visits, students see first-hand what a career in construction would involve. They have visited a variety of locations showing them everything from construction jobsites and drafting/design professionals to a plumbing warehouse and cabinet showroom. Special thanks to Rezac Construction, Pride Homes, Bath & Kitchen Idea Center by Lincoln Winnelson, the Home Design Center and VirtuActive for sharing their expertise with these students. Thanks also goes to Denny Van Horn, Matt Kinning, Erin Magnussen, Delrae Hirschman, Hayley Lane, Mike Rezac, Matt Kleinschmit, Pam Magner, Kristin Donnelly and Kelli Fleek for coordinating and assisting with the visits. The Lincoln Lighthouse is an after-school program which offers middle and high school aged-youth academic support, evening meals and enrichment/recreational activities during non-school hours throughout the year. It is vitally important for youth to have a safe harbor during the high risk after school hours. The Lighthouse After School Program's goal is to: “Increase the likelihood of high school graduation of middle and high schoolaged youth by providing high quality programming.”

Scholarship Winners

Sachi Baeta Sachi Baeta is a senior at Lincoln Southwest High School and is attending The Career Academy in the Building Construction pathway. Sachi received a renewable scholarship for the remaining three quarters she has at Southeast Community College in Milford. Sachi is active is FCCLA, DECA and theater. Sachi enjoys seeing something she's helped build materialize and takes pride in seeing a project completed.

Cody Kleinschmit The President's scholarship is awarded to a student who has a parent or other relative who is a member or employed by a member of HBAL. This year's winner was Cody Kleinschmit, son of Matt and Tracy Kleinschmit, Pride Homes. Cody is a senior at Pius X High School and is active in Youth Conference of National Affairs Club, Pius track and cross country teams. For Cody, construction is something he has been exposed to his whole life through his father. He started, as lots of young people do, with sweeping jobsites. He's had several summer jobs directly related to construction. He knows that every day will be a new challenge but finding the solution is something he enjoys.

Mark Aksamit, Chair of the Scholarship Committee, shared with those in attendance the great opportunity we have to help those who are pursuing a career in home building. “I encourage all HBAL Members to share about the Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation Scholarships with future candidates who you may know or meet throughout the year.”

The Political Voice of Lincoln’s Building Industry YOUR LOGO HERE*

In 1989, the Home Builders Association of Lincoln formed a political action committee called HOMEPAC. HOMEPAC's mission is to financially support individuals seeking elected office who understand the importance of housing in our communities. It is very important for our industry to have a hand in supporting officials who understand the importance of safe, affordable housing and the small business owner. Please help HOMEPAC elect pro-housing, pro-business candidates to office.

HBAL Job Board As you are probably well aware, there is a labor shortage in the homebuilding industry. To address this, HBAL has partnered with other industry-related associations and created BuildOurNebraska.com, a resource for young adults looking for guidance and direction when thinking about their future career paths. This website is shared via high school guidance counselors, social media and includes links to available positions in the construction industry. As a benefit to our members, we created a page on our website dedicated to job listings from our members. We are asking you to help us populate this page with your current job openings.
