As I write this letter in mid-April for the May Business Builder, I wonder if spring will actually ever truly arrive. It brings to mind the issues and delays caused by this past winter’s rain, snow and cold. This spring will require our patience and tolerance as we work with our team to get projects back on track. We continue to work diligently on bills in the legislature. The impact on our industry of legislation being considered could be major. As the legislature looks at adopting the 2018 IRC and Energy Code, imposing sales tax on remodeling projects, radon mitigation and other issues, we remain diligent in the protection of our industry. Additionally, we continue to work on City Council and Mayoral elections promoting candidates who are pro-growth and pro-residential construction. HBAL is working on development of a Median Income Affordable Housing Task Force. This initiative will identify cost saving measures that, if implemented by the City, would significantly reduce the cost of development and home construction. In a way that only HBAL could make happen, we will be doing a four week “blitz” build for Habitat for Humanity this summer. The five-bedroom home will be owned by a single-parent mother with eight children. The home will be located at 4227 W. Hancock Ct. Framing is scheduled to begin June 10. Thank you to Sam Swartz, Ben Carey and Jim Christo for taking the lead on this very worthy project. Also, thank you to Tyler Reynolds who will be coordinating the volunteers needed to pull this off. If you can volunteer or donate materials or funds for this project, please contact the HBAL office or the appropriate committee member as listed on page 12. This is just another shining example of the HBAL commitment to making our community a better place! Watch for information on the 2019 Membership Drive. The goal is 55 new members and retention of existing members. If you haven’t registered for the HBAL Golf Tournament to benefit Habitat for Humanity on June 7, please get registered. Don’t forget the YBP Light the Way 5K on June 29 to benefit the Lighthouse Program. And finally, the Spring Parade of Homes runs May 12-19. Come out and support your fellow HBAL members. Happy and Safe Home Building!

Curb Cut Requests In an effort to maximize efficiency for City Maintenance Operations forces and ensure timely completion of curb cut requests, the City of Lincoln is starting a new process to saw cut curbs for driveways and handicap ramps. The City has competitively bid out curb sawing so that work will be performed by a private contractor, Diamond Concrete Cutting, Inc. The City anticipates this new process will begin May 1, 2019. Find a copy of the contract, specifications and unit costs for sawing of curbs at https://bit.ly/2Dxt5gY. The process to initiate curb sawing will continue to operate in a similar fashion to what has occurred in the past. One change is that you will be responsible for the cleanup of debris following the curb being sawn. The timeline for completing sawing requests is noted in the contract document. Upon completion of the curb sawing, you will receive a billing from the City based on actual quantities and the attached costs. Please note, if Diamond Concrete Cutting arrives on a site and finds the work has not been marked or is not ready to be performed, they may charge an extra $100 return trip fee charge. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Tim Byrne, Maintenance Operations Manager, at 402-441-7701.
Thank you for your donation to the LPS Career and Technical Competition Fund. Your generosity is much appreciated and will support students who attend the construction SkillsUSA State Tournament.

Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation
Home Builders Foundation to Participate in Give to Lincoln Day The Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation is participating in Give to Lincoln Day 2019. This is a 24-hour event that encourages the public to contribute to Lincoln and Lancaster County nonprofit organizations on May 30th. Give to Lincoln Day is coordinated by Lincoln Community Foundation, in partnership with local nonprofit organizations. Every donation makes a bigger impact on Give to Lincoln Day because nonprofits also get a proportional share of a $450,000 match fund made possible by LCF and generous sponsors. The purpose of Give to Lincoln Day is to promote philanthropy in Lincoln and Lancaster County. There are three primary goals: • Introduce new donors to local nonprofit organizations. • Help Lincoln nonprofit organizations tell their stories and educate Lincoln about the positive impact they have on our lives. • Shine a community spotlight on this day of charitable giving to raise a substantial amount of new money to assist the local nonprofit network. There are 439 non-profits participating in the event and we encourage you to visit www.givetolincoln.com and consider making a donation to the organization(s) of your choice. If you’d like to make a donation to the Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation, you can do so at
www.givetolincoln.com/nonprofits/home-builders-care. The Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation was established in 2009 as a 501(c)(3) charitable, non-profit organization dedicated to the future of the home building industry in Lancaster County. The Foundation strives to support the community by contributing to community service projects focused on housing, as well as providing scholarships for students pursuing a career related to the building industry, and providing funding for other industry related educational programs.

Habitat for Humanity: HBAL Blitz Build
A New Home for Martha and Her Family Martha is a single mom raising eight children: daughters, Mary (17), Alek (9), Athiens (5), Nyrool (4) and Monica (1) and sons, William (12), Kur (10) and Deng (7). She has worked for UNL Dining Services for the last seven years. With such a large family, Martha works hard to provide for her children and is excited to become a homeowner, to have a place they can all call home. Martha and her family have lived in their fourbedroom duplex for four years. At her past residence, Martha was evicted due to her family size. Their move was an emergency decision in order to have a place to stay, and one of the only places she could find to rent that fit her budget and allowed her to move in right away. Due to the large family size, brothers and sisters are currently sharing a room. Their monthly rent is $1,050 plus utilities, which is a very high portion of her monthly income. Martha said, “this duplex just isn’t fitting us, and the condition is not safe for my children to be living in.” The duplex was in poor condition before they moved in, including severe carpet stains; having the carpets cleaned would result in a higher rent. Additionally, it is difficult to open and close the closet doors, the garage has several holes in the walls, and the kitchen floor contains many cigarette burns from previous tenants. The condition has not improved since 2014. Martha is looking forward to the Habitat program because she can buy her own home, that is safe for her family, at an affordable monthly mortgage rate. Martha is adamant about paying her own way and doing what is best for her children. Martha felt it was a sign when she was offered her lot on International Women’s Day; a sign of empowerment and a future of opportunity. Martha is the homeowner for the Home Builders Association of Lincoln’s 2019 Blitz Build.

Scholarship Winners
Fatima Ayal Fatima is a senior at Lincoln High and is attending the Career Academy in the Building Construction pathway. Fatima received a renewable scholarship worth $250/semester for up to 3 semesters at Southeast Community College in Milford. Fatima is active in SkillsUSA and is an assistant at Coffey & Co. Fatima enjoys working with her hands, working on small projects and building things. Last year she represented Nebraska in the National SkillsUSA competition and won top 10 in the Job Skills Demonstration. Someday she would like to walk by a home and proudly say, “I built that.” She has a vision for her future to open her own renovation company to work on homes in Lincoln.
Bryce McGill The President’s scholarship is awarded to a student who has a parent or other relative who is a member or employed by a member of HBAL. This year’s winner is Bryce McGill, son of Mike & Kelly McGill with Timber Ridge Homes. Bryce is a senior at Norris High School and received a $1,000 scholarship and will be attending UNL. Bryce has always been around construction, going to jobsites after school with his dad or helping him during the summer with many different projects. Bryce’s father and grandfather influenced his decision to pursue construction. His father taught him to take pride in making the best product you can. Business isn’t always easy, but the challenge is something he enjoys.
Bob Freese Recognized In addition to recognizing local youth, HBAL recognized Lincoln Northeast High School Industrial Technology teacher, Bob Freese, for his efforts in teaching students skills in construction. Bob leads the 25-year-old student-build program at Northeast where they work with a general contractor to build a house. The house eventually is purchased by a family through the Lincoln Housing Authority. At a recent presentation at Lincoln Public School’s District Office, Bob said, “This program gives the opportunity for young people to learn some skills in construction, where there are many good job opportunities available.”
