My wife and I recently took the plunge and subscribed to Disney+. We discussed this for a couple of days going back and forth on whether or not it would be worth it. We came to the decision that this would be the best timing to try out this streaming service. I have to say it was a great decision. Let me rewind a bit and share what our nightly routine as a family looked like before the quarantine. After dinner and the cleanup process, the family would all grab their separate devices and go into their own rooms for the rest of the evening. Now, together as a family, we partake in watching a different Marvel movie each night. After the movie comes deep discussion of the plot, acting and thoughts on what the next movie will show. All day, I look forward to being surrounded by my family and watching the next movie. This quarantine has reminded me of how important my family is to me. Whether it’s our nightly Marvel movie, family meals or FaceTiming with my daughter and her husband living in California, I treasure these times and give thanks for allowing me this time to focus on my family. I find comfort in being in my home with my family. We as members of HBAL have played a role in the comfort families are finding in their homes. Every day we work to build, remodel and sell homes to families; the homes that people are quarantining in right now we helped provide. For all those feeling like there’s nothing you can do right now, you already did it, you supplied families with homes. The staff at HBAL are continuing to make adjustments to our summer and fall events. Make sure to follow us on social media for announcements as we continue to alter events. Reach out to one another, check in on your employees and remind them that we will make it through this. The Board of Directors and staff at HBAL are here for you, please reach out to us if you need anything.

HBAL Government Affairs Update With Covid-19 hitting every aspect of our community, the political world is not exempt. Things have certainly changed but HBAL is still working in the interest of our members! Currently, we are communicating with our City Council and County Commissioners. We are also planning to meet with Anthony Goins, Director of Economic Development for the State of Nebraska, regarding the 2018 energy code and the 2020 electrical code, among other items. Many of our members feel the proposed code changes do not provide enough added benefit to justify the additional costs to builders and their clients. HBAL continually works with local and state officials regarding issues that affect the home building industry. During times like these, our efforts will be even stronger to assure we have every opportunity to help our community rebound.

Give to Lincoln Day
Home Builders Foundation to Participate in Give to Lincoln Day The Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation is participating in Give to Lincoln Day 2020. This event encourages the public to contribute to Lincoln and Lancaster County nonprofit organizations beginning May 1 through May 28. The purpose of Give to Lincoln Day is to promote philanthropy in Lincoln and Lancaster County. There are three primary goals: • Introduce new donors to local nonprofit organizations. • Help Lincoln nonprofit organizations tell their stories and educate Lincoln about the positive impact they have on our lives. • Shine a community spotlight on this day of charitable giving to raise a substantial amount of new money to assist the local nonprofit network. There are hundreds of non-profits participating in the event and we encourage you to visit www.givetolincoln.com and consider making a donation to the organization(s) of your choice. If you’d like to make a donation to the Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation, you can do so between May 1 and May 28 at

HBAL Member Updates
Matt Kinning, Kinning Design Build, Inc. - We have a Ryan Trausch, Lincoln Federal Savings Bank - I was moved to work from
home on April 7. It has been a bit of an adjustment with the four kids homeschooling and our 20-month-old still needing attention but we are making it work (see picture). Definitely enjoying being able to have lunch with the family every day and you can’t beat the commute either. Also, interest rates at the bank are really low now for construction loans so that’s a bonus for builders. Definitely looking forward to getting back to church and being able to watch the kids play sports again.
Pam Magner, Reynolds Design & Remodeling - We have two home offices
and three classrooms set up at our house right now. My husband has taken over the dining room and relegated our daughter back down to her bedroom (the dining room, with its ideal natural light, was her territory before all this started). Since Kip isn’t driving to Omaha every day, he has had a lot more free time for projects and just general family time.

smaller staff and work from our home office most days, so work hasn’t really changed much. We are doing more and more virtual meetings and have set up a zoom account to meet with clients. Because we are a family run business, we get that “quality time” with each other everyday! It has been fun having the kids around more. I think the best thing to come out of this pandemic is how life has slowed down and allowed me to get a few more things done on the “honey-do-list” and catch up on projects in my shop that have been on the back burner. Lacey and I love to go to the movies, so I’m hoping the theaters will be open in time for me to enjoy a double smash burger and the new Top Gun movie!
Tyler Reynolds, Woods Bros. Realty -
Striving to retain some normalcy in the midst of a worldwide pandemic is an interesting thing. While many businesses and many entire industries have essentially shuttered completely for the time being, the housing market seems relatively unaffected save the increase in hand sanitizer use, signs on doors advising people to touch as little as possible, masks and gloves being provided by sellers and a huge increase in the use of virtual tours and electronic signatures. The actual volume of business and average sales prices though, seem to be holding. We have not seen the usual surge of new listings that would be typical for the spring market. Prospective sellers are opting to wait in an effort to not have a bunch of strangers traipsing through their homes touching everything. However, low interest rates and probably a bit of cabin fever have led to many buyers continuing their hunt and thus, an increased demand for the homes that ARE currently listed. This has allowed sale prices to remain stable and even slightly increase for some price points which spells good news for the health and continued growth of our housing market. I have shifted to working from home as much as possible and am wishing I owned stock in Zoom as I have probably increased share prices 10 fold by my use alone. My wife is a hospital nurse so she has continued to be on the front lines of what is happening and I thank God every day for the brave men and women like her who continue to work to keep us all safe. We are staying positive though and have enjoyed watching the outpouring of human goodness around the globe as people rush to help one another in various ways. If there is a silver lining to be found in the midst of this tragedy I guess it would be that most of us have found great joy and importance in things we used to take for granted and a renewed gratefulness for the health and well-being of all mankind. It’s amazing to see how much can be accomplished when we work together for the sake of humanity! The law of attraction says “Whatever you are thinking, whatever you are feeling, is what is in the process of becoming.” So stay positive, stay optimistic and though physically apart, together we will get through this!
HBAL Member Updates Marlene Stroup, Schwinn Homes, LLC - The Stroup kids, deemed “essential workers” to Schwinn Homes, have been out of school since March 6th. That’s 48 days in case you’re not counting. Without the ability to get out of the house for job site visits and a little work here and there, we may have all gone mad. Instead, I’ve managed to hire my own chauffeur, a demolition crew and a cleaning crew...free of charge! We should all be so thankful for careers in construction in the state of Nebraska right now!
Taylor Ashburn, West Gate Bank - I am beginning my
fourth week of working from home. I am thankful for technology, which has allowed me to stay in touch with my lending team and customers. At our bank, we have a daily video chat to touch base. We’ve also been conducting our weekly loan committee via video chat. These unusual circumstances have challenged everyone at the bank to think outside the box and find new ways to conduct our business. I think this experience will forever change how we do business and has challenged us to find new ways to help our customers. Three weeks ago I closed a construction loan in the drive-thru window. That was a first! I was telling my wife the other night, “if I didn’t watch the news or read the newspaper, I would have no idea anything bad was happening in the world. It’s very busy right now.” It seems like housing is still going strong in Lincoln, which is so good to hear. I hope and pray our wonderful contractors and subcontractors continue to stay busy. The residential construction lending department at West Gate is having a great year, all things considered. Honestly, I have never been busier. There are lots of new projects coming online. We’ve been busy making lot loans and construction loans to our builders and direct to the consumer. A silver lining throughout this pandemic is the low interest rate environment, which is certainly a good thing for our industry. The housing market was a “shining star” during the last recession and that’s my hope for us all going forward. Working from home has been positive, as it has given me a little more time with my family. Cara and I have four children. I owe her a great deal of gratitude, as she is presently homeschooling our older three kids (5th, 3rd and 1st grade), all the while trying to keep our 2.5 year old entertained. Lots of moms and dads are in the same boat. I am sure this is a school year none of our kids will ever forget! What’s the first thing I’ll do once the pandemic is over? At this point, I’m ready to hire a babysitter and take my wife out to dinner. It’s funny, but the thought of being in a packed restaurant on a Saturday night sounds really good to me!
Beau Daffer, BIC Custom Homes - We have made several
adjustments in these unprecedented times. I, like most people, have become much more acquainted with Zoom and other forms of virtual meetings. In addition, finding ways for some of our staff to work remotely has been a priority. Building relationships is a large part of what we do. With that being said, I cannot wait for this whole situation to end so we can be back together and see smiling faces and hear people’s laughter again. Laughter just doesn’t feel the same through a computer screen or speaker. While these times have created new hurdles, they have also allowed me to spend more time with my family. We have taken more walks and more family bike rides in the last six weeks than we usually do throughout an entire summer! Most of all, I’m looking forward to date night with my wife - sitting in a restaurant and getting out in the community again.
Fred Hoppe, The Hoppe Law Firm - Hoppe Homes,
Hoppe, Inc. and The Hoppe Law Firm are all open for business but obviously business is not as usual. We allow working from home and some of us (Jake, Troy, Justin and our comptroller) do. Most everyone else prefers to come into the office, but our offices are spaced out so we stay socially distanced in the office. As to activity in the office, electronic audio and video meetings are the norm even from room to room in the office as long as an external party is involved. A good bit of thought now goes to how to move forward, “distancing.” We are building in Lexington and Grand Island where COVID-19 seems to just have exploded (relatively). I think Lincoln is lucky our Mayor got out ahead of the social distancing and stay at home. We build mostly with subs so some of the issues aren’t right on our plate. Everyone is responsible for a safe work site, however. Other than work, I’ve been hanging pretty close to home. We have a new puppy so we aren’t bored and have to be outside enough to keep that pup from chewing the inside out. Fortunately we have a lot of space. I’m tired of pandemic news and Ozark is a diversion. First thing we’ll do when the pandemic is over is go out to dinner with friends. That we miss a lot.
Jennie Korth, HBAL - Not only am I working from home, but I’m also “homeschooling” Emery who is in the 2nd grade. At first she thought it was great, but now she can’t wait to go back to school and see her friends. She has become a pro at rollerblading! It’s been fun to see her progress over the last few weeks. Our dog, Lola, finally sleeps through the night. All this time with us at home has worn her out! Not sure what will happen when we go back to work. Our walks in the neighborhood have allowed us to meet more of our neighbors, chatting with them from a safe distance of course! We have weekly video chats with my parents and brothers’ families. And I’ve dusted off my grandma’s sewing machine to make a few masks for my husband and friends. I could go on! Although, we’ve been busy, I cannot wait to get back to the daily hustle of life. Target and a pedicure will be my first trip! I can’t wait to coach Em’s volleyball team and sit on the sideline cheering her on at soccer. I look forward to lunch with friends and Saturday morning spin class! 13 Lincoln Business Builder

In April alone, we experienced warm 80s and sun, cold 40s and Kristin Sims rain, strong winds, thunderstorms YBP President with large hail and a very random snow storm. I guess it’s now safe to say: “April showers,* bring May flowers (*hail, thunderstorms, strong winds, rain and snow)”!? Besides our beloved Nebraska weather constantly changing, our businesses have had to change as well. I have been listening to webinars with topics focused on how businesses in our industry are adapting during this time and it is really impressive to hear that most of us are still remaining successful and finding ways to stay afloat. I won’t sugarcoat it, change is difficult for anyone especially when it’s unplanned and we’re forced to adapt. During this time of uncertainty, please don’t be afraid to reach out to your colleagues or even your ‘competition’ and lean on each other for support and advice. We have to be in this together. Now more than ever, we should be marketing and advertising our services on social media. Post those ‘sneak peek’ pictures of your Tour of Remodeled Homes entry or Parade of Homes house on your social media accounts. Teach your followers the difference between luxury vinyl tile and porcelain tile. Or just make it personal by sharing a picture of your takeout meal from a local restaurant with the hashtag #SupportLocal. Our future customers are waiting for us to help them with their projects as soon as we return to a new normal. The most efficient way to make your business stand out right now is through social media. Homeowners are literally stuck in their homes checking social media and using their ‘less than desired’ kitchens, bathrooms, makeshift home offices and basements every day. It is important to keep your social media accounts fresh and continue to showcase your professional skills. I truly believe once this over, we will be stronger than ever! Our upcoming YBP Light the Way 5K is still planned for June 27 at Holmes Lake. Spread the word! We are actively looking for participants, volunteers and sponsorships. Contact the HBAL office if you are interested. The next YBP Hard Hat Happy Hour has been rescheduled to July 16 at the Build DCB office. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at our next YBP event! Please continue to check your e-mails and HBAL social media accounts for updates. Take care of yourselves and stay healthy!

Chairperson’s Message by Heidi Polacek
Life has definitely changed in the last couple months. Fortunately, my husband, Karel, and I are still both working and our daycare is still open. Since we are unable to go places or see family, we have been going on lots of bike rides and walks exploring the Heritage Trail by our house near Beatrice. We have also been getting more projects done around the house and getting the girls involved with those projects.
ANKEE HILL BRICK manufactures the highest quality FBX brick in a color palette ranging from the traditional reds and buffs to the innovative pinks, maroons, and lavenders. Lincoln Cabinet is still open. The four of us come in everyday, although we are open by appointment only to clients. We still have a slow stream of leads coming in and jobs to work on. Some clients want to postpone their project until later this summer, and some want to continue on as scheduled. Thankfully, our subcontractors are small crews, so we have been able to continue on with minor adjustments. As of the print date, we are still planning on the Tour of Remodeled Homes to be June 13-14. We had extended the deadline for entry until May 1, however we are going to be somewhat flexible and give participants at least until after the May 6 directive date to make a decision. We are also still planning on the Remodelers Golf Tournament on Friday, August 28 at Holmes Golf Course. Sponsorship information and team registration will be mailed out soon! We are working on our fall lineup of monthly meetings with the hope we will be able to return to normal (or maybe a new normal). Please continue to watch for email updates from the HBAL office and follow the Remodelers Council’s Facebook page for updates.
