April is the cruelest month they say and the April wind has been cruel. But not only the weather. Home building has plenty of wind in our face: no truly affordable lots; rising prices for everything (labor and materials); rising interest rates. But thankfully no rain to slow us down. And even that will be a problem probably. County Assessor, Rob Ogden told me the other day that single family homes are 71% of the Lincoln real estate valuation. That means the taxes from single family homes pay for 71% of the City’s planned spending. That alone tells me “housing pays for itself”. And what is the point of economic development focusing on jobs --- to grow a city, right. But the true point is to grow who lives and spends money in the city. And that means housing. Lincoln has to have housing for all those employees. So fellow homebuilders lets persevere and keep doing what we do. It is more important now than ever.

Scholarship Winners President's Scholarship

Garrett Magner

Garrett Magner, son of Kip & Pam Magner with Reynolds Design and Remodeling is this year's winner of the President's Scholarship. Garret attends Lincoln Southeast High School and will be attending UNL. He will be majoring in architecture and would also like to major in construction management. He has volunteered on mission trips, for the Food Bank House at the Home and Garden Show and works part time for Reynolds Design and Remodeling. Knowing there is a need for more employees in construction, along with watching his mother Pam create beautiful spaces for years, has influenced his decision to pursue a degree in architecture. The President's Scholarship is awarded to a student who has a parent or other relative who is a member or employed by a member of HBAL.

Austin Madsen

Austin attends Norris High School and plans to attend Wayne State College. Austin is active in football, track and field, church youth group and teaches swimming lessons along with being a lifeguard. He finds the construction field to be rewarding, challenging and is an opportunity to acquire skills that will be useful everyday.

The Tour of Remodeled Homes was a huge Tim Zeng Remodelers Council success! It was so Chairperson wonderful to see the participants as well as many visitors viewing the homes. The Tour is always such a great event and I enjoyed seeing so many friendly faces. We are one of the sponsors of the Cruisin' for the Trades Car Show at SCC on May 1. Come out and enjoy cars and fellowship with other HBAL members. Our team will be there and we hope to see you, too. The big showstopper in May is just a week away! It is the Parade of Homes! I have had our schedule blocked out/arranged around homebuilders the last few weeks, so we are able to help them with this event. What is your team doing to make the most of the Parade? With our busy schedules it can be difficult to prioritize safety, but it is necessary in our industry. We have created a Disaster Preparedness Plan to keep our team safe on and off the job site. Something that has really helped us is a Rally Point: a designated meeting point away from the current worksite/jobsite agreed upon in advance. This way, in case of any kind of issue or disaster, we can eliminate confusion and find each other when cell service might be sketchy. I encourage you and your team to also draft a Disaster Preparedness Plan to keep everyone safe! You can find more info at Ready.gov.

energy for now energy for the future Wouldn’t it be great to have clean, efficient, and affordable energy that was here and ready to go? Even better, what if it was an abundant source—enough to last another century? Well, thankfully, you don’t have to make a choice. It’s Natural Gas.
