President’s Message
Lori Wellman, HBAL President
The month of May brings us the Spring Parade of Homes!
We are excited to have 25 builders showcasing houses in this year’s Parade. I have always felt our Parade has a nice variety of home sizes, styles and floorplans. The Parade gives our members a chance to showcase the craftmanship they put into their homes and allows perspective buyers to see the work firsthand. In addition, it gives future homebuyers an opportunity to talk with the builder and find out what your company can do to help them build a home that fits their family’s needs.
In the last few years, we have all experienced supply change issues, which has made it harder for many builders to have homes in the Parade. We all hope these issues continue to improve, making our jobs easier and the building process less challenging.

Habitat’s Community Builders Breakfast Recognizes Partners in Affordable Housing
Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln hosted the 4th annual Community Builders Breakfast on Wednesday, March 22 at the DelRay 817. Hundreds of supporters were in attendance as the nonprofit recognized the work of partners who have helped in the effort to create more affordable housing in Lincoln.
At the event, HBAL and the REALTORS Association of Lincoln were recognized as a Community Partners of the Year.
“Seeing the community come together to support the issue of affordable housing is inspiring,” said Josh Hanshaw, Habitat’s CEO. “The need is so great and will take both the private sector and business community’s dedication to the idea that everyone deserves a decent, safe place to live.”
Our sympathy to Krystle & Justin Brandt, Custom Scapes & Tree Removal, LLC, on the death of Krystle's mother, Shirley, who passed away on April 10, 2023.

2023 Construction Career Day Hosts Over 250 Students
HBAL hosted its 2023 Construction Career Day at Haymarket Park on April 20. Continuing education is important, even if it’s not in a classroom. Local construction companies took hands-on training to another level when they allowed area high-school students to experience operating a back-hoe, hammering a nail, using power tools, smoothing out concrete and more! Thanks to Jereme Montgomery (Stephens & Smith Construction) and the entire Careers in Construction committee for organizing this successful event which hosted over 250 students! 16 Lincoln Business Builder Lunch & Learn: Workplace Safety
Did you know May is Small Business Month? Did you know small business is the backbone of your town, city and state?
It is important to keep as much business as we can in our communities. As remodelers we can make sure we utilize the businesses next door as much as possible. It can be as simple as getting your oil changed with a local mechanic or buying building materials from a local resource rather than a big box store. Of course we need to watch our operation costs and material costs, but the relationships you make with small business owners may not show up on paper, but will pay back in customer service and knowledge. These types of time savings are worth every penny spent.
Make sure the next time you need to get out that credit card, that it not only helps you and your business, but it also helps another small business in the community. We have a lot of events coming up: the Spring Parade of Homes, HBAL Golf Tournament and the Remoderlers Council Picnic. Please contact the HBAL office if you need any details.

LES Transformers:
LES held another meeting in March to update on the transformer shortage.
They confirmed three alternative designs for single-phase transformers. Two utilize poles, the third option utilizes an enclosure to mimic a pad mounted transformer. There are delays in receiving the enclosures until August, so pole versions will be utilized if needed. Transformer deliveries have improved, they have begun to receive transformers from orders placed in 2020. Deliveries should start to take place in a steady fashion (barring any manufacturer issues). Communication channels with transformer vendors have also increased, which helps LES in planning and scheduling future transformer needs. This is only in reference to single phase transformers. There are no options for alternative design for three phase transformers. Providing LES with design information for these is critical to allow for needed orders to be placed sooner in the process. It is currently taking 18 months to receive a three-phase transformer.
Lincoln Transportation & Utilities (LTU) Sidewalks:
LTU agreed to most of the proposed changes on the new sidewalk inspection process. Denny Van Horn and Matt Kinning have another meeting scheduled with Liz Elliott, Director of LTU, to discuss the changes. The discussion process has gone well and HBAL appreciates the concessions made to date through negotiations.
Careers in Construction:
Next Thursday 4/20 is Construction Career Day. We are expecting 250-300 students. There should be around 24 companies with hands on experiences for the students.

for now energy for the future
Wouldn’t it be great to have clean, efficient, and affordable energy that was here and ready to go? Even better, what if it was an abundant source—enough to last another century? Well, thankfully, you don’t have to make a choice. It’s Natural Gas.
