Engage to become inspired! Recently I listened to a homily about feeling inspired. The priest shared the story of a parishioner who wasn’t feeling a connection to God during the service. He reminded the parishioner that to feel the connection he yearned for, you have to become more engaged in the church and do more than just attend mass on Sunday. Do you ever participate in something and walk away saying “that was a waist of my time?” I think this happens to all of us from time to time. The message from the homily simply points out “the amount you put into something is measured by the amount you receive.” I wanted to share this homily because it pretty much fits into everything we do in our life. Whether it’s church, marriage or work…you get out of it, what you put into it. The same can be applied to your membership with HBAL which is much like a gym membership: just because you pay your dues, it doesn’t guarantee you results. You have to go and put forth some effort to reap the reward. Get involved, attend meetings, step out of your comfort zone. Making a connection with your fellow HBAL members can be a better ROI than you think. I can relate to that parishioner as I prepare for the Lincoln Halfsy this weekend. As I’ve trained mentally and physically for this race, I feel worn down and much pain throughout my body. This led me to feel God wasn’t with me on this one. I was not doing this for Him in any way, so I did not see any reason why my success or failure made any difference. I shared this with my wife, Tracy, and she reminded me to simply pray for strength. Relationships are a two-way street, but sometimes we need to be the one to take the first step.

Behind the Scenes

Behind the Scenes at HBAL By Michaela Harrison, Executive Vice President

221 Oakcreek Dr.

Thank you to Greg Schwinn, Marlene Stroup, Denny Van Horn, Mike and Matt Kinning and Bo Jones for meeting with representatives from Building & Safety a couple of times during the past month to discuss the staff shortage in Plan Review this summer. Many of our builder members discovered plan approval was taking up to four weeks. Building & Safety has assured us they have already hired one new Plan Reviewer and are in the process of hiring another. Their goal is to meet builders' expectations of less than two weeks for plan approval. HBAL plans to keep in contact with Building & Safety moving forward and as they become fully staffed.

HBAL members are also actively meeting with representatives from the Public Works, Planning, Building & Safety and Watershed Departments with the City regarding lot drainage issues. We are working with them on this issue and are trying to find a solution to the problem without adding more regulation and added expenses for building a home. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to contact me at 402-423-4225 or michaela@hbal.org.

New Silica Standards Being Enforced Crystalline silica is a common mineral found in the earth’s crust. Materials like sand, stone, concrete, and mortar contain crystalline silica. It is also used to make products such as glass, pottery, ceramics, bricks, and artificial stone.

Respirable crystalline silica – very small particles at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand you might find on beaches and playgrounds – is created when cutting, sawing, grinding, drilling, and crushing stone, rock, concrete, brick, block and mortar. Activities such as abrasive blasting with sand; sawing brick or concrete; sanding or drilling into concrete walls; grinding mortar; manufacturing brick, concrete blocks, stone countertops, or ceramic products; and cutting or crushing stone result in worker exposures to respirable crystalline silica dust. Industrial sand used in certain operations, such as foundry work and hydraulic fracturing (fracking), is also a source of respirable crystalline silica exposure. About 2.3 million

people in the U.S. are exposed to silica at work. Workers who inhale these very small crystalline silica particles are at increased risk of developing serious silicarelated diseases, including: • Silicosis, an incurable lung disease that can lead to disability and death • Lung cancer • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) • Kidney disease To better protect workers exposed to respirable crystalline silica, OSHA has issued two new respirable crystalline silica standards: one for construction, and the other for general industry and maritime. OSHA began enforcing most provisions of the standard for construction on September 23, 2017, and will begin enforcing most provisions of the standard for general industry and maritime on June 23, 2018. “Silica.” OSHA.Gov. Realizing she was a Nebraska girl at heart, she and her husband moved to Lincoln in 1992 and have lived here ever since. Pam began working at Reynolds Design & Remodeling in 1993 and earned her CKD and CBD soon after joining Roger’s team. As a person who loves to cook, Pam enjoys creating beautiful kitchens that are also just as efficient to work in. She loves the challenge of remodeling because it allows her to create multiple design solutions for any given space. In 2006, after 13 years, she left Reynolds to spend more time with her 3 children. During that time she worked from home for Kraftmaid Cabinetry creating KBIS displays, kitchens for their literature, and displays for Home Depot and Lowe’s throughout North America. As the economy plummeted, Pam also decided to earn her Master’s Degree in Teaching. In 2014, while teaching, Pam received a call from Arlyn Copley, who had purchased Reynolds Design & Remodeling from Roger Reynolds, and was offered the position of General Manager. Rejoining the Reynolds team after an 8 year absence was a dream come true and Pam is committed to maintaining the quality and reputation of the company that still carries Roger’s name. She is involved in all marketing decisions, financial aspects, and project management, as well as the designing and selling of projects. Pam is just completing her term as Chair of the Remodelers Council and is serving on the Careers in Construction Committee. She also enjoys being involved in HOMEPAC. Pam has also been active in PTOs at her kids’ schools and a Sunday school teacher. Pam and her husband, Kip, are celebrating 25 years of marriage! They love the laughter and time shared with their children Logan (20), Aubrey (16) and Garrett (13) as well as their extended family. In her free time Pam enjoys reading, baking, and anything that allows her to be creative.
