President’s Message Mike Rezac, HBAL President On page 30 of this publication is the monthly table of building permits. As you can see, building in Lincoln continues on its downward trend. For the first 9 months of 2010, builders took out 286 single family permits. In 2002, pre-impact fees, during the same time-period – January-September – 931 permits were issued. Although impact fees can’t be to blame for the entire downturn, it certainly was a contributing factor. The next negative impact on housing could very well be mandatory residential sprinklers. Residential fire sprinkler technology has been around for several decades, yet there has never been a strong market demand for these devices. Almost thirty years ago the idea of installing a system in the home was first developed and since then manufacturers have done their best to educate consumers and create “Residential fire new markets. Even with all this educational sprinklers are a material on how systems work, when given significant expense that the choice home buyers do not elect to have a should not be forced residential fire sprinkler installed in their home. In several parts of this country, local jurisdictions upon homebuyers.” have taken away the homeowners’ rights to choose and have enacted ordinances that make it mandatory to install residential sprinklers. Residential fire sprinklers are a significant expense that should not be forced upon homebuyers. I’d like to thank the sponsors and participants in the third annual Sporting Clay Shoot held at Oak Creek Sporting Club. We had a great time, the weather was perfect and it’s a great way to promote our Home Builders Care Foundation.

Facts About Fire Sprinklers Maintaining a residential fire sprinkler system is not the same as maintaining a smoke alarm system. Homeowners can check on the operation of smoke alarms without costly professional intervention. The fire sprinkler valves must be checked periodically to verify the system is activated. Sprinkler heads must be checked to make sure they are clear of obstacles. Homeowners must be careful not to block them or paint over them. Also, if a backflow preventer is installed, an expensive annual inspection is usually mandated by the local water purveyor. A sprinkler industry advocacy group, the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition, recommends that home sprinkler systems be installed according to the latest recommendations from the
National Fire Protection Association, or NFPA 13D, “Installation of Sprinkler Systems in One- and Two-Family Dwellings and Manufactured Homes.” This same document advises that the sprinkler pipes in the antifreeze-type systems installed in colder climates be emptied and then refilled with an antifreeze solution every winter, and that monthly inspections and tests of all the water flow devices, pumps, air pressure and water level be performed. When the home relies on a well rather than a municipal water source, the costs of maintaining the necessary pumps and holding tanks must be factored in as well. Information acquired from the National Association of Home Builders.

Financial Column
Financial Planning--Helping You See the Big Picture By John Oestreich, Waddell & Reed
Do you picture yourself owning a new home, starting a business, or retiring comfortably? These are a few of the financial goals that may be important to you, and each comes with a price tag attached. That’s where financial planning comes in. Financial planning is a process that can help you reach your goals by evaluating your whole financial picture, then outlining strategies that are tailored to your individual needs and available resources.
Why is financial planning important?
A comprehensive financial plan serves as a framework for organizing the pieces of your financial picture. With a financial plan in place, you’ll be better able to focus on your goals and understand what it will take to reach them. One of the main benefits of having a financial plan is that it can help you balance competing financial priorities. A financial plan will clearly show you how your financial goals are related--for example, how saving for your children’s college education might impact your ability to save for retirement. Then you can use the information you’ve gleaned to decide how to prioritize your goals, implement specific strategies, and choose suitable products or services. Best of all, you’ll have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that your financial life is on track.
The financial planning process
Creating and implementing a comprehensive financial plan generally involves working with financial professionals to: • Develop a clear picture of your current financial situation by reviewing your income, assets, and liabilities, and evaluating your insurance coverage, your investment portfolio, your tax exposure, and your estate plan • Establish and prioritize financial goals and time frames for achieving these goals • Implement strategies that address your current financial weaknesses and build on your financial strengths • Choose specific products and services that are tailored to meet your financial objectives • Monitor your plan, making adjustments as your goals, time frames, or circumstances change
A financial professional can give you objective information and help you weigh your alternatives, saving you time and ensuring that all angles of your financial picture are covered.
Staying on track
The financial planning process doesn’t end once your initial plan has been created. Your plan should generally be reviewed at least once a year to make sure that it’s up-to-date. It’s also possible that you’ll need to modify your plan due to changes in your personal circumstances or the economy. Here are some of the events that might trigger a review of your financial plan: • Your goals or time horizons change • You experience a life-changing event such as marriage, the birth of a child, health problems, or a job loss • You have a specific or immediate financial planning need (e.g., drafting a will, managing a distribution from a retirement account, paying long-term care expenses) • Your income or expenses substantially increase or decrease • Your portfolio hasn’t performed as expected • You’re affected by changes to the economy or tax laws This article is written by Forefield, Inc. but is provided by John W. Oestreich. It is meant to be used for informational purposes only and should not be construed as investment advice. Please consult with your tax, legal and financial advisor prior to making financial decisions. ©2010 Forefield, Inc. All rights reserved. Waddell & Reed and Forefield are not affiliated companies. John W. Oestreich is a Managing Principal with Waddell & Reed in Lincoln, NE, and can be reached at 402-484-7526. Waddell & Reed, Inc. Member FINRA and SIPC.
Some members of the team
The financial planning process can involve a number of professionals. Financial planners typically play a central role in the process, focusing on your overall financial plan, and often coordinating the activities of other professionals who have expertise in specific areas. Accountants or tax attorneys provide advice on federal and state tax issues. Estate planning attorneys help you plan your estate and give advice on transferring and managing your assets before and after your death. Insurance professionals evaluate insurance needs and recommend appropriate products and strategies. Investment advisors provide advice about investment options and asset allocation, and can help you plan a strategy to manage your investment portfolio. The most important member of the team, however, is you. Your needs and objectives drive the team, and once you’ve carefully considered any recommendations, all decisions lie in your hands.
Why can’t I do it myself?
You can, if you have enough time and knowledge, but developing a comprehensive financial plan may require expertise in several areas.

On Thanksgiving Day, all over America, families sit down to dinner at the same moment - halftime. - Author Unknown

Chairperson’s Message by Lori Pippitt
The shift into the Holiday season has started. Christmas décor is filling the aisles at many discount stores, Christmas want lists are being started and airline tickets are being purchased to insure safe and timely travels to be with family. I love this time of the year, but it makes me a little sad to think about how many people have been hit by the economic downturn and may not be looking forward to the months ahead. We have all had to cut back on our purchases and maybe even on our donations. But, I challenge each of you to “give back!” Giving doesn’t have to just be opening up your pocket book. If you can’t afford to give a monetary donation, then think about giving a little of your time/talent to a community project. The HBAL Santa Cops project is November 6th at Northeast High School. This is a great activity that can be enjoyed by all. Don’t forget the Dolls vs. Trucks toy drive and the shelters are always in need of toiletry items and warm winter coats and clothes. I hope you will take time to join us for our November Remodelers meeting at Destinations Coffee House, located in the North Bottoms. Join us to see how this building has evolved over the years from a mule barn, a mechanics garage and a storage building into the comfortable coffee house it is today! Also, make sure you mark your calendars for this year’s Remodeler’s “South of the Border” Holiday Party at Las Margaritas at 27th & Jamie Lane on December 1.
November Meeting Lunch at Destinations Coffee House (1219 N. 14th Street) Wednesday, November 3, 2010 • 11:30 a.m. Come enjoy the ambiance of this coffee house and hear the story of how it was remodeled from its former uses as a mule barn, mechanics garage, and storage building into the comfortable and welcoming coffee house it is today. This is a hidden jewel located in the North Bottoms neighborhood on the corner of North 14th and New Hampshire. Lots of parking spaces available.

Spike Appreciation Month
November is Spike Appreciation Month Since 1953 NAHB has sponsored the Spike Club program to support members and their associations as they both recruit new members and retain existing members. At the core, a Spike is a member who understands that HBA membership is invaluable to their business and wants others in the industry to enjoy the same success while contributing to the strength of the local, state, and national industry. A Spike understands the value of the interconnectedness that membership offers to his or her business. And our federation understands the value that Spikes bring to the table, as well! The Spike Credit schedule below explains how Spikes are recognized and rewarded for their recruiting efforts.
Spike Credits
Spike credits are earned when a member recruits or retains a member. All credits are allocated through systematic reporting done by the local HBA to NAHB on a monthly basis using the member’s PIN to track all Spike Club activity. Builder and Associate Recruits • One credit is earned for recruiting a new Builder or Associate member. • One credit is earned for securing the renewal of a first year member. • ½ credit is earned for securing the renewal of a 2nd year member and each year thereafter. Affiliate Recruits • ½ credit is earned for recruiting a new Affiliate member. • ½ credit is earned for securing the renewal of an Affiliate member. Renewal credits are automatically assigned to the original sponsor by NAHB unless notified of a different sponsor by the local HBA.

Becoming a Spike
A member is classified as a Spike Club Candidate prior to becoming a Spike, during the time when they have between 1 and 5 credits. A Spike Candidate must graduate into a Spike within a 2-year time period. In other words, a member must earn 6 Spike credits within 2 years in order to become a Spike. If these 6 credits are not earned within 2 years, the credits are lost. Once a member is a Spike, they must earn one credit per year (whether recruitment, retention or combination thereof) until they reach a total of 25 credits. A Spike with 25 credits is considered a Life Spike and need not continue to earn credits to keep their status.
The Spike Party – The Ultimate Reward
Spikes who are active recruiters are rewarded at the International Builders’ Show each year with an unparalleled event called The Spike Party. The Spike Party has become known for amazing venues, top-notch entertainment, and a great time on a grand scale! However, the only way to enter the Spike Party is to earn it! Spikes become eligible for this event by having at least 6 credits AND one recruitment credit (either 1 full credit or two ½ credits for Affiliate recruitment) between January 1 and October 31. Tickets for this one-of-a-kind event are never for sale and are only ever available to eligible Spikes. Exceptions are never granted. Ever.

ENERGY STAR HOMES ARE A WIN, WIN, WIN PROPOSITION. ®
Homebuyers win because ENERGY STAR homes are more efficient, more comfortable and the lower costs of ownership allow them to put more money into their homes. Builders win because ENERGY STAR homes are more profitable to build. And the more we conserve, the more we all win. To learn more, contact Bob Ruskamp at 473-3275 or bruskamp@les.com.
