Featuring President Vickie Williamson Vickie Williamson President
“Vickie is a well respected leader in the industry and has the experience to take Nebraska Title Company to the next level”.
How did you get started in the business? Right out of school I moved to Houston Texas and needed a job. A family friend worked at a title company. I had no idea what a title company did, or what exactly it was that I was getting myself into, I jumped in feet first. From that experience, I got hooked on the title business. I took the title experience I had gained to Nebraska Title Company. What accomplishments are you proudest? Having the opportunity to serve as our company’s President would have to be #1 as far as my career is concerned. On a personal level I am most proud of the opportunity I have had to be a grandmother to our two grandchildren. One of life’s greatest blessings.
Patrick Lutz, Esq
The best advice I received? Be willing to step out of my comfort zone, allow myself to grow as a person, take some risks, believe in myself. How will your business change in the next decade? Technology and social media will continue to challenge us to make face-to-face contact with our customers and establish personal relationships.

President’s Message November 2011 Vol. 48, No. 11
Contents
Lois Hartzell, HBAL President We are entering the Holiday Season and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. What am I thankful for and why? I started pondering this question in the middle of October as I traveled to meet with a NAHB Builder 20 group. I met with 19 other small production/custom builders from across the United States. After two days with them, I had learned so much. The first was: I/we are not alone. Each of them has or is experiencing everything we have gone through or are dealing with. We talked about what we did to improve or lessen the blow from this new market we are in. I learned how to watch the market to see when the upswing is occurring, the importance of cash and how valuable it will be when growth starts to occur. If you are holding onto bad assets, you need to do everything in your power to get rid of them. I truly recommend getting involved with a NAHB Builder 20 group because having friends who have walked in your shoes is priceless. So . . . . What am I thankful for? I am thankful for the challenge of adversity and the blessings received. I recognize I am a strong person and these past few years have made me a much better person. I have the confidence to succeed when the unexpected arrives. Do I always get the answers I thought I would get? Absolutely not! I am happy with the outcome of these obstacles and each makes me a better person. I am thankful for adversity, unanswered prayers and knowing God has a plan for me. Enjoy the Holiday Season! November General Membership Meeting & Election Speaker: Darin Erstad, Husker Head Baseball Coach Darin Erstad was named the 23rd head coach of the Nebraska baseball program and the fifth since 1947 - on June 2, 2011. One of the most decorated baseball players in program history, Erstad was a first-team All-American and finalist for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award in 1995 before embarking on a 14-year career in Major League Baseball. Erstad wrapped up his professional career in the fall of 2009, after playing for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Chicago White Sox and Houston Astros. During his career, he helped the Angels to a World Series title in 2002 and two other American League playoff appearances. Erstad spent the majority of his career playing for the Angels and was one of the greatest players in their franchise history, as he ranks in the top five on team charts in seven categories, including hits, runs, doubles, total bases, RBIs and stolen bases. A two-sport star at Nebraska, Erstad was a first-team All-American and Big Eight Co-Player of the Year as a junior in 1995. He finished his Husker career holding school records for most hits (six), runs (six), and RBIs (six) in a game; most hits (103) and total bases (194) in a single season (1995) and most career hits (261). In addition to his exploits on the diamond, Erstad was also the starting punter for the Huskers’ 1994 national championship football team, helping NU to a 13-0 record. Darin, and his wife, Jessica, have three children.

Saturday, November 12, 2011 9 a.m. ~ Until Completion
Once again, we are sponsoring our very successful Dolls of HBAL vs. Toys with Wheels. In 2010, we collected 107 dolls, 84 toys with wheels and 36 other gifts for girls and boys at Christmas. This year, we are repeating the “Dolls of HBAL vs. Toys with Wheels” project in hopes of bringing joy to even more children. So, guys and gals, it’s time to shop ‘til you drop. Let’s see if we can fill the HBAL office with shiny new toys. Will we have more dolls or toys with wheels? Only Santa’s elves know the answer. Note: When shopping for dolls, keep in mind ethnic dolls are a big hit with a lot of little girls

Member News Lamb Joins Goings Homes Team Mike and Vicki Goings are pleased to announce the addition of James Lamb to the Goings Homes team. Goings Homes has been building custom-designed single-family homes and townhomes since 1993, most recently specializing in energy-efficient high-performance homes and third-party “Certified Green Built” homes. This business focus is what makes James the perfect fit to help guide Goings Homes into the future. James’ past experience in the building industry is extensive. He is licensed with the National Association of Home Builders to certify new homes as “Green Built” and with the Environmental Protection Agency to certify homes with the Energy Star Label. In fact, in 2010 the EPA named his company Energy Star Partner of the Year. In addition, his company also specialized in retrofitting existing homes with energy-efficient insulation and window packages. “Mike Goings has brought together a team of top-quality contractors and vendors that work together to produce one of the best built homes on the market,” Lamb said. “His focus on energy efficiency and high quality construction, as well as Goings Homes reputation for honesty, integrity, customer service and organization are what attracted me to this opportunity.” “It is very important for us to begin to “turn over the reins” of our company to someone who understands what it takes to build a highperformance home, who shares our belief in Christ and who has the respect of others in our industry and community,” Goings stated. Mike and Vicki will continue to be involved in day to day operations to help ensure the success of James and his wife, Tyley, as they move towards full ownership of Goings Homes over the next five years.

The All-American Home
The All-American Home A residential builder in Montana is challenging builders to reallocate their spending and buy 5% more American materials vs. the cheaper, foreign made products. According to his Facebook page, Anders Lewendal believes this 5% shift in the residential building industry would add $14 billion to the US economy every year. That would be enough to employ the entire population of Grand Island, Kearney, Fremont, Hastings, North Platte and Norfolk at about $40,000 a year. Can this be done? Lewendal is proving so by building an all-American made home. A home he hopes will be a blueprint for creating jobs in America. Lewendal acknowledges that buying American-made products and materials can be more expensive, but not by much. Currently the All-American Home only costs 1-2% more than a foreign-sourced house. Lewendal’s All-American Home was recently featured on ABC’s World News Tonight’s series “Made in America.” The corresponding ABC article (http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/business/2011/10/how-to-build-a-made-in-america-home/) included a list of those products being used in constructing the All-American Home. We’ve included a portion of the list below. We encourage you to take this challenge and do your part in making a change.

Political Action Honor Society
Political Action Honor Society Purpose: This honor society is for the entire membership of HBAL. No recognition is given in the point chart for past achievement since the basic concept is one of an ongoing political involvement each year. It is the intention of PAHS to reward those members who are actively participating in political functions. It is designed to promote participation and achievement among a large segment of our membership. This program is designed to raise political awareness and bring credit to the home building industry. Qualification: To maintain membership in HBAL’s PAHS, members must re-qualify each year by obtaining 100 points. The qualification period for membership and recognition is January 1-December 31 each year. This is a yearly qualification for all levels of political involvement (city/ county/state). The program is based on the honor system, with each member completing an annual application which outlines his/her total point accumulation each year. This application must be submitted to the HBAL office for review no later than December 15 each year. Spike Appreciation Month
November is Spike Appreciation Month The Spike Club
Growing Our Strength Through Member Recruitment, Retention and Involvement Recruiting new members to your local association is an activity recognized and rewarded through the Spike Club. Those who participate are called Spikes, and they are among the most valued members of the association. Member-to-member recruitment and retention efforts are the largest source of growth for the federation. As such, Spikes, those members who participate, are highly valued because of the grassroots growth and stability they bring. These efforts lend to the development of the general membership and our leadership pipeline, keeping the face of the federation true to that of our industry and the scope of interests we represent. Spikes are the membership leaders of our federation, building the voice, power and influence on every level, in every state. Spike Club Q & A What are the benefits of becoming a Spike?
The real benefits are intangible—you are recognized for your contributions to the association and regarded as an accomplished and connected member. Additionally, Spikes receive: • A coveted invitation to the biggest party of the year, the Spike Party at the International Builders’ Show®* • Increased visibility, recognition and networking opportunities at industry events • Unique and valuable lapel pins for each level of achievement. • Additional VIP treatment throughout the year *Eligibility postcards are sent only to eligible Spikes who have at least 6 credits and one new member recruitment credit between Jan. 1 and Oct. 31. The recruitment credit may be composed of one full credit received when a new Builder or Associate member is recruited or two ½ credits received when Affiliate or Council members are recruited. How do I become a Spike?
Before becoming a Spike, you are a Spike candidate. That means you have earned between one and five credits. Once you earn your sixth credit, you become an official NAHB Spike!* Spike credits are earned by recruiting and retaining HBAL members.
To retain your status as a Spike you must earn a minimum of one new Spike credit (new or retention) each year until you reach a total of 25 credits, at which point you are elevated to Life Spike status. * Providing you have earned those six credits within two consecutive membership years. How do I earn Spike credits?
Members earn one credit for each new member they sponsor. When that member renews after his or her first year of membership, the sponsoring member automatically gets one renewal credit. Every year the member renews thereafter, the sponsoring member will receive a ½ renewal credit. How can I get tickets to the Spike Party at IBS®?
You must be a Spike in good standing as of October (having at least 6 credits) and you must have earned at least one new member credit. Spike Rolodex Every day, you do business with dozens of home building-related companies that are prospective HBAL members. The Spike Rolodex is a helpful list to create a customized “prospect Rolodex” of 101 potential new member recruits. Update the list as your business contacts expand and as your prospects become HBAL members. Check your list against the association roster to identify non-members, then ask those prospects to join HBAL. The more you recruit, the higher you will move up the Spike Club ladder. To download your Prospect Rolodex, go to www.NAHB.org and search “Prospect Rolodex.”

Quinn’s House
Quinn’s House
On June 30, 2011, a very special group of people broke ground on a house for a very special little girl. Quinn was born in December 2006 and shortly after, her parents found out their precious beautiful baby had a heart defect. After surgery she had some severe complications which lead to brain trauma. Now, this almost five year old is continuing to improve, learning new skills and overcoming obstacles. And thanks to some generous people in the Lincoln community (including some of our very own HBAL members), she will soon have a new home built just for her with her special needs in mind. “As a family, we sold our house, and thank God for sending us a miracle, and a lot of very talented people. We are embarking on building Quinn a new home that will be accessible for all her physical needs. It’s looking like it is going to be a community project in many ways, and I hope and pray that Quinn affects the lives of many of these people who are helping build our home. Helping educate them to see that a disability is only part of who she is, and that she still has so much more to offer.” - Susan Otte, Quinn’s Mom To read more about Quinn, go to http://quinnotte.blogspot.com If you are interested in assisting in this project, please contact Greg Shinaut at 402-437-1717.
Oct. 20, 2011 - Ken Inness, Skyline Homes, and his crew work to prepare for the trusses.

Would you prefer homebuyers put more money into their homes, or their utilities? While ENERGY STAR® qualified homes cost a little more, they’re at least 15 percent more efficient than the 2004 International Residential Code. Their energy savings more than offsets any additional cost. Which makes them more affordable to own. And more profitable to build.
