Goal-Based Networking with Guest Speaker Jeff Beals

Networking has never been more important, yet most professionals don’t do a great job of it. The successful professionals are the ones who cut through all the noise in today’s frenzied world and find ways to build trusting relationships with clients, colleagues and persons of influence. Now is the time to get out and meet new people! This session will introduce you to “goal-based networking,” a technique that sharply focuses your communication efforts. You will learn what to say, when to say it and to whom you should say it. You will learn how to synthesize social media with traditional networking. Once you master goal-based networking, your colleagues will be left wondering just how you became so well connected both locally and within your profession.

President’s Message

Bo Jones, HBAL President Mother Nature didn’t cooperate for the Fall Parade of Homes. This year was smaller with only 28 entries and with rain most of the week along with snow on Sunday, attendance was down but the homes were still great and hopefully the entrants felt it was successful. Unfortunately, Santa Cop will be cancelled due to the early start of a home football game. If you would like to make a monetary donation to the Santa Cop program, we will soon be presenting them with a check. The Sporting Clay Shoot was Friday, October 19 and had the largest group to date with 184 shooters. We have a dedicated group of builders who are working with the Planning Department and the Lancaster County Commissioners on their amendment to allow Accessory Dwelling Units in the county. If you would like details, let us know and we will update you on the discussion. The November Membership and Election Luncheon will be held on November 12 at Yankee Hill Country Club. Our speaker, Jeff Beals, will be giving an informative message about Goal-Based Networking. I would highly encourage everyone to attend to hear his message. I would encourage anyone interested in being more involved with HBAL to reach out to Michaela, Denny or me to discuss opportunities to do so. Make sure to vote on November 6!

1923—2018

Modular Ramp

Spotlight What is your mission statement? To be the best customer service driven supplier of quality building materials. How long has your company been in business? Since 1923, this is our 95th year. What services do you offer? We supply building materials: lumber, siding, windows, roofing, millwork, etc. We manufacture roof and floor trusses, wall panels and pre-built stairs, including circular stairs. We produce interior and exterior doors in our own shop. How many employees do you have? 257 What community service events do you participate in? We work with Habitat for Humanity as a business partner and with their on-site build blitz days, participate in United Way food packaging days, participate in the Builders of the Future Program and are corporate partners with multiple local grade schools. Contributions, sponsorships, donations and participation in area events for non-profits and those in need are a great number. We have a seriously wonderful core of people who genuinely care about the community they are in. In fact our company t-shirts for CLC say that it stands for Christensen Lumber Cares! How long have you been a member of HBAL? Since 2006. What HBAL events does your company participate in? HBAL Golf Outing, Sporting Clay Shoot, lunch meetings, Remodelers Golf Outing. Why do you belong to HBAL? To stay connected with the building industry in Lincoln in all phases. We belong to multiple builder associations and HBAL does a wonderful job of incorporating all areas of our industry into their events and meetings.

In 2001, the Home Builders Association of Lincoln was asked by an employee of the Building & Safety Department to help build a ramp for a fellow city employee. Because the need was temporary, it was decided the best approach was to purchase a light-weight modular aluminum ramp which could be assembled on site and, once the ramp was no longer needed, it could be removed and stored for future use. Since then, the ramp has been used numerous times by those in need and Remodelers Council members are quick to volunteer the man hours required to make it happen. If you know of someone in need of a temporary ramp, please contact Jennie Korth or Michaela Harrison at 402-423-4225.

Habitat for Humanity Wish List Habitat for Humanity is seeking to partner with subcontractors to do their drywall finish, roofing and grading. If you are interested in partnering with Habitat or volunteering of any kind, we encourage you to contact them at 402-477-9184. Habitat for Humanity has been building decent, affordable homes for 30 years in Lancaster County. Serving low-income individuals and families who would not otherwise be able to obtain a traditional bank loan, we provide the path to homeownership through a low-interest home loan. With more than 85 applicants applying for the homebuyer program last year – a 21 percent increase over the prior year - the need for affordable housing in the community far exceeds their current resources. Through a comprehensive analysis of its organization, Habitat has a new three-year strategic plan that maps out a more effective construction model, as well as taking on a home repair program that will serve existing low-income homeowners in the community. The strategic plan will take the organization step-by-step in serving more families in the community. The transformation involves the need to build on multiple job sites per day, which will require them to update and invest in additional equipment. Habitat needs you, the business and construction community’s help – in locating and purchasing the required equipment to serve more families in need of shelter. Do you have extra equipment at your business? Getting ready to upgrade and can donate your old product? Or can you donate to help cover the cost of purchasing equipment?

If you can help donate or provide a discount to purchase any of the items listed below, please contact Jeremy at (402) 477-9184 or jtrujillo@lincolnhabitat.org Pick Up Truck with Towing Capabilities Flatbed equipment trailer (with guardrails) Scaffolding HUGS Enclosed tool trailer Scaffolding trailer Ice Machine Snow blower 20’ planks (3-4) Safety equipment (harnesses, new HUGS brackets, gloves, eye protection, ear protection) 7 1/4 chop saw Saw horses
