President’s Message
Bo Jones, HBAL President Fall is here and we are starting to see the amazing colors that come along with it. With fall also comes Husker football and for most Nebraskans we’ve been pretty excited for the new Scott Frost Era. Unfortunately, in a world where instant gratification is the norm, many have been disappointed with our losing record and some want to give up altogether. As builders, much like rebuilding a team, we know in order to build something great you have to dig a hole to make way for the new foundation. When done properly that foundation is what supports the home for generations to come. HBAL had a busy September. The highlight was taking the trophy from the REALTORS® Association at Trivia Night. It was a fun event and we hope they are up for the challenge again next year. We also had a great turnout for our Membership Lunch. We had five new members sign up and several new affiliates join. We are well on our way to reaching our goal of 50 new members this year. In October, we will have our Fall Parade of Homes, Sporting Clay Shoot and Santa Cop Project. Santa Cop is a little earlier this year as we were hoping the bye-weekend would cause the least amount of conflicts for our volunteers. But just like the hundreds of couples who scheduled their weddings that day, we’re hoping to still have a great turnout for our event! One last thing….we are adding an HBAL Foundation Giving Day. The goal of Giving Day is to give back to what matters most to HBAL members. HBAL members and their employees are invited to submit an application (see page 17) to explain why their charitable interest should receive funding. The request must be related to the mission of the Foundation. Applications must be submitted to the HBAL Office by October 31 and selected applicants will be asked to give a five-minute presentation to the Foundation Board on November 8.

What is your mission statement? The mission of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is to continuously strive to exceed our customers’ expectations in value and high standard of satisfaction. How long has your company been in business? TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® started in the early 1980s as a way for two brothers to make extra money while they were in high school. Now, 30 years later, the company has grown to more than 320 locations worldwide. Brothers Brig Sorber and Jon Sorber started moving people in Lansing, Michigan, using an old pickup truck. Mary Ellen Sheets, their mother, originally drew the iconic logo on a restaurant napkin during lunch. That stick-men logo still rests on every truck, sign and advertisement. After the brothers left for college, Sheets continued to field calls for moving services while she also worked a full-time data processing job with the State of Michigan. In 1985, she decided to make things official by purchasing a 14-foot truck for $350 and hiring a pair of movers. That $350 is the only capital Sheets has ever invested in the company. Our office in Lincoln is actually one of the oldest franchises in the system, having been in business for over 25 years!
What services do you offer? Many people believe TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is solely a residential moving company but in addition to this service, we offer much, much more! Being a moving company, it only makes sense that we offer a full line of boxes and packing supplies and the best prices. Boxes, tape, packing paper, stretch wrap, wardrobe boxes, we have it all! To make moving day go a bit smoother we also offer packing services. We can move your entire home, start to finish, and you won’t have to lift a finger! Our latest addition is one we are very excited about! Value Flex is an affordable long distance moving service designed to give our customers an exclusive white glove experience that is not offered by any other long distance moving service! Value Flex gives our clients dedicated use to our GPS tracked 16’x8’ moving containers, including an exact delivery date, all at an affordable rate. Something that has not been possible in the past. Across town or across the country, we have a service for every customer! How many employees do you have? Our local office has around 40 employees. We are a bit more than just ‘Two Men’ :) What community service events do you participate in? Giving back to our local community is one of our core values we take very seriously. We work with many organizations here in Lincoln such as Peoples City Mission, Friendship Home, Girl Scouts of Nebraska, Food Bank of Lincoln, Cause for Paws, and Lincoln Public Schools. Also, we donate 10 cents from every move to the American Cancer Society. To date, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK has donated over $500,000.00! How long have you been a member of HBAL? Fifteen years and we are excited to be a Bronze Sponsor of HBAL! What HBAL events does your company participate in? While we do our best to attend as many events as possible, we will never miss a golf outing! Why do you belong to HBAL? We have always known HBAL to be a very tight-knit group of talented individuals but we had no idea of the depth of the group. From community involvement with The Lighthouse, to internal professional development, we are thoroughly impressed with the willingness to give and assist others. We see many different opportunities for HBAL to benefit from our services. With TWO MEN AND A TRUCK being the premier residential home mover in Lincoln, we thought it was only right to align ourselves with the premier builders and influencers in the real estate industry. We are so excited to build our relationship with HBAL and we look forward to many more years of involvement!

Santa Cop Project
HBAL to Celebrate 30th Santa Cop Project In 1988, the Home Builders Association of Lincoln built 60 rocking horses which were then given to the Lincoln Police Department and distributed to local children through their Santa Cop program. Saturday, October 27, 2018 will be the 30th project to be completed for Santa Cop and we will have built over 2,100 toys. Today, HBAL continues the tradition of building wooden toys. We will give two sets of the project to LPD’s Santa Cop Auction where they raise money to purchase toys for local children who might not otherwise receive a gift. In 2017, they raised $25,000. The money goes towards purchasing toys for the Center for People in Need’s Toyland as well as their Shop with a Cop event.
Pictured above are the Rocking Horses built at HBAL’s first Santa Cop Project in 1988.

Goal-Based Networking
November Membership Luncheon & HBAL Election Goal-Based Networking by Jeff Beals Networking has never been more important, yet most professionals don’t do a great job of it. The successful professionals are the ones who cut through all the noise in today’s frenzied world and find ways to build trusting relationships with clients, colleagues and persons of influence. Now is the time to get out and meet new people! This session will introduce you to “goal-based networking,” a technique that sharply focuses your communication efforts. You will learn what to say, when to say it and to whom you should say it. You will learn how to synthesize social media with traditional networking. Once you master goal-based networking, your colleagues will be left wondering just how you became so well connected both locally and within your profession. Monday, November 12, 2018 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Yankee Hill Country Club 7600 San Mateo Lane Cost: $15 for HBAL Members or $25 for Guests

The Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation was established in 2009 as a 501(c)(3) charitable, non-profit organization dedicated to the future of the home building industry in Lancaster County. The Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation’s mission is to support the educational and charitable activities of the Home Builders Association of Lincoln. Lighthouse Salsa Contest
I can’t believe it’s already fall! YBP still has a lot of fun events to wrap up the year. We attended a Salsa Tasting on September 21 at Lighthouse and helped judge the salsa made by the kids with ingredients from their garden. This is the second year we’ve judged this fun event.
Hayley Lane YBP President
Our last and final Midday Meetup is coming up on Tuesday, October 23. This is one you don’t want to miss! We will get the opportunity to network with Veteran HBAL Board members. Lunch is free for YBP members!
Thank you to the YBP members who joined us on September 21 to judge the Salsa Contest at the Lighthouse. The Lighthouse youth teamed up with their mentors to create their own salsa using produce from the Lighthouse garden.
Our final Lighthouse project is Monday, October 29. We will be helping set-up their haunted house. Come and help us put together the walls, hang out with the kids or donate some candy to this event.
Join us at these upcoming YBP Events!
Please watch your email for more information about our YBP tailgate on Saturday, November 17! Go Big Red! We are also planning our Holiday party so stay tuned for more information for both of these events.
