As September starts to wind down and Fall is quickly upon us, I find myself trying to get everything possible done before winter sets in. A quick aside, last winter left a lasting impression on all of us. It seems as though my days are a blur of moving from one task to the next with long hours and little attention to personal time away from the job. As I look at it, I realize all the people on my “team” are doing the same thing and if I am not careful it becomes an expectation. We all need to step back, take a deep breath and get away from the day-to-day grind. Make that an expectation for yourself and your “team” members. An organization is only as strong as its members. Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Our annual HBAL membership drive ends November 11. The goal for this year’s drive is 55 new members. There are several incentives available to those who recruit new members. Additionally, the Remodelers Council membership drive runs through November 11. HBAL is a strong advocate for the home building and remodeling industries. We can build on that strength by recruiting and involving new members. Please get out there and talk with your suppliers and subs about joining HBAL and help us meet our goal. October is a busy month for HBAL and our membership. The annual Fall Parade of Homes is October 6-13. A big thank you to all our members who have worked on a Fall Parade home. You represent our industry with pride. The Sporting Clay Shoot is a fun event that will get you away from the job. This is the 12th year of the event and it will be held on Friday, October 11. Take advantage of the October 29 HBAL educational opportunity, Gone Phishing: How to Protect Your Business from Cybercrime. Always one of HBAL’s finest moments, our Santa Cop project is scheduled for November 9 in the woodworking shop at Lincoln Northeast High School. This is a family activity with a visit from Santa Claus and kids activities. After having last year’s project canceled due to the rescheduled Husker football game, I hope we will have a record turnout of HBAL members and family. One last thought, if you have never ever exhibited in the Home & Garden Show, it’s a great way to have face-to-face contact with potential customers. Booth spaces are still available and if you are interested in exhibiting contact Michaela. Enjoy the Fall weather and take time for yourself, family and friends. Happy and Safe Building!

HBAL’s Annual Coat Drive

Annual Coat Drive Update Believe it or not, the cold winter days will be here before we know it. While most of us are fortunate enough to have a roof over our heads and warm clothes to wear. That’s not the case for many in our community. As we move into the holiday season, let’s not forget about those who could use a helping hand. Typically in the October issue of the Lincoln Business Builder, we ask our members for donations of warm winter coats. This year our office will be a construction zone and everyone in the industry understands the mess. So, we ask our members to thoughtfully consider other ways you can give back in this season of giving. We know there are many to choose from, but here are just a few we thought we would share. • • • • • • • • • •

Volunteer at HBAL’s Santa Cop Project (see next page) Donate hats, mittens, scarves for elementary schools through the Remodelers Council drive Donate coats to Raising Cane’s coat drive in October Donate to or volunteer at A Warmer Day (https://www.awarmerday.org/donate/) Donate to the Black Hills Cares program to help pay someone’s heating bills this winter (https://www.blackhillsenergy.com/give-help)

Home & Garden Show Seminar Topics Wanted!

Dear HBAL & HBAL Members, Thank you! Thank you for building strength, stability, self-reliance and shelter for Martha’s family during the Blitz Build. Your support of Martha’s family went above and beyond. We cannot thank you enough for your time, talent and financial support in building a decent, affordable home. Hosting and participating in a Blitz Build increased the capacity to serve an additional family this year! You helped Martha build a place she and her kids will be able to call HOME for years to come. A place where they will gather around the dinner table for the first time, where her children will ride their bikes and play in the backyard; where birthday parties will be celebrated with friends and “just one more” goodnight story will be read. Warm Regards, Christina Zink Director of Development Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln 22  Lincoln Business Builder
