Big Red Night

With Guest Speaker Husker Basketball Coach Tim Miles Monday, September 12 6:00 p.m. Social 7:00 p.m. Dinner Nebraska Champions Club 707 Stadium Drive Cost: $15 for HBAL members $25 for non-members RSVP to info@hbal.org or call 402-423-4225. We’ll be drawing the winner of our Kansas City Getaway that evening. You must be present to win! See pages 8 & 9 for more details on how you can increase your chances to win!!

Exceeding expectations. That’s what Tim Miles has done throughout his collegiate coaching career. A proven program builder who has enjoyed success at the Division I, Division II and NAIA levels, Tim Miles was named the 27th basketball coach at the University of Nebraska on March 24, 2012. Miles has already made monumental strides during his three seasons at Nebraska, ending the Huskers’ 16-year NCAA Tournament drought in 2014. For his efforts, he won the Jim Phelan Award for national coach of the year, and was selected as the Big Ten Coach of the Year by his peers. In 2014-15, the Huskers garnered their first national ranking since 1995 and enjoyed record-setting attendance numbers, establishing a school-record attendance of 15,569 fans per game to rank 10th nationally. In 2013-14, the Huskers, who were picked to finish last in the Big Ten, became one of the big stories in college basketball, going 19-13 and reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998. The Huskers opened Big Ten play with a 1-5 record before orchestrating a turnaround which saw them win 10 of their final 12 Big Ten games to finish fourth with an 11-7 record. The stretch included a pair of wins over top 10 teams – a 60-51 win at No. 9 Michigan State which was the Huskers’ first road win over a top-10 team since 1997 and a 77-68 win over a Wisconsin team which reached the Final Four. Nebraska’s 11 conference wins were the most by a Husker basketball team since 1966. Miles’ energetic personality has also spurred unprecedented fan interest in the Husker program. Nebraska has sold out its season ticket allotment in each of the first three years of Pinnacle Bank Arena. In 2013-14, Nebraska averaged 15,419 fans per game, a jump of 5,067 fans per game from the previous year and the largest increase by any program since 2004. The Huskers went 15-1 at home in 2013-14, the best home record by a Husker team since the 1982-83 campaign and the best record in the Big Ten during 2014-15. In his first season at Nebraska, Miles took a team that returned one starter and two of its top nine scorers, and improved the Huskers’ win total from 12 to 15 despite facing a school-record 10 ranked teams. Nebraska posted wins over a trio of NCAA Tournament teams before capping the season with a win over Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago – the program’s first Big Ten Tournament victory. Not a bad feat for a program that was a near unanimous choice for the league cellar by the league’s pundits.

While establishing a tradition of winning in college basketball, Miles’ philosophy extends far beyond the basketball court. He and his staff are committed to academics and the success of their student-athletes in the classroom. At Nebraska, he has had 11 Academic All-Big Ten honorees, including a conference-best five honorees in 2015. With 20 years of experience as a head coach at four institutions, he has compiled a career record of 330-269 that includes three conference championships and seven postseason tournament appearances. Only twice in his two decades has a team failed to match its win total from the previous year. Miles showed his ability to turn around programs during his tenure at Southwest Minnesota State University. He took a program that had only one winning season in the previous decade and went 78-39 in his four seasons at the school, recorded the first 20-win season in school history, and led Southwest Minnesota State to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in more than two decades. In his final year at the school, the Mustangs won a school-record 28 games – the first 20-win season in program history – captured the 2001 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship and reached the Division II Elite Eight. For his efforts, Miles was named the NSIC and North Central Region Coach of the Year following the 2000-01 campaign. A native of Doland, S.D., he graduated from the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D., in 1989 and earned a master’s degree in health and physical education from Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D., in 1990. He was inducted into the University of Mary Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007. Miles, and his wife, Kari, have one daughter, Ava, and one son, Gabriel.

Member Spotlight Taylor Ashburn West Gate Bank

Position: Vice President / Manager of Construction Lending Phone: 402-323-8953 Email: tashburn@westgatebank.com Company Information: Locally owned since we were established in 1968, West Gate Bank is a true local bank devoted to serving the needs of the Lincoln community. We carry this focus on the community not only into what we do, but how we do it. When you visit West Gate Bank, your lines will be short, the people will be friendly, and your service will be prompt. When you call us, a knowledgeable person will answer the phone; not a computer set on a loop. Here, we know the difference that truly makes a difference is in the details. How did you get started in the business? I was in college at the University of Nebraska and was looking for a job that fit with my school schedule. I saw an opening for a part-time bank teller and the rest is history. I never thought about a career in banking but I couldn’t be happier about where my career path has led me. Favorite Song: Anything by The Dave Matthews Band Favorite Books: The last book I read was ‘Steve Jobs’, the founder of Apple. It was really interesting. Favorite Movie: The Shawshank Redemption Favorite TV shows: Mad Men, The Office, Shark Tank Favorite local restaurant: JTK What do you find rewarding: Professionally: earning new business at the bank. Personally: watching my children play Biggest challenge in life: Raising our three kids, balancing work and life What inspires you: Entrepreneurs. I am not much of a risk taker, and so those who have an idea and are not afraid to start their own business are very inspiring to me. What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be like my dad. I didn’t really understand what he did for a living, but he had a neat office and worked in a big building downtown. Pet Peeve: Being late to something. Bad Habit: None! But if you ask my wife she’d say cracking my ankle First thing I do in the morning: Hit the snooze button Favorite vacation spot: Disney World with my family Favorite thing to do on a day off? Sleep in a little bit (which is hard with three small kids), make coffee, sit outside on the deck. Greatest Hero: The men and women of our Armed Forces Childhood fear: Snakes and heights Family: My wife Cara and I have been married for 11 years. We have three children: Jonathan (8), Nicholas (5), Cecilia (3… going on 16!) Greatest accomplishment: Winning back-to-back State Football Championships in High School. Also, I was ranked as the 43rd most successful mortgage loan officer in the country in 2010. What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? My grandfather’s cousin was Richie Ashburn, who played baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies back in the 1950’s. He was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York in 1997. Also, President George Washington is my 3rd cousin, 8 times removed. Seriously. If you could have a super power, what would it be? To fly. What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? Public speaking Which talent would you most like to have? I wish I could remember people’s names easier If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? Mark Cuban, Daymond John or Robert Herjavec (from the show Shark Tank).

It pays to build more energy-efficient homes. Just let us know where to send the check.

The LES Sustainable Energy Program provides homebuilders significant incentives for installing high-efficiency heating and cooling equipment — up to $900 per ton on air conditioners, air source and ground source heat pumps. Whether you keep the incentives or pass them on to clients, you’ll help save energy, reduce environmental impact and delay the need to build expensive power plants. Help keep Lincoln’s electric rates among the lowest in the nation. Visit LES.com/SEP or call 402.475.4211 for complete details.
