In each of my letters over the past few months, I have discussed the issue of attracting young people to the building professions. There is no doubt that we are experiencing a growing void of qualified people to fill the increasing need for workers to build homes in Lincoln. A strong housing market creating more jobs and the loss of current workers due to retirement and workers exiting the industry for a variety of reasons, are creating an ever-growing need for new to our industry workers. As an association and an industry, we can continue to complain about the problem or we can choose to work on solutions. HBAL is choosing to be a positive force in developing our future workforce. For the past couple of years, we have worked with the Lincoln Public Schools high school industrial technology teachers to provide classroom assistance from HBAL members. We have also participated in a program to give students involved in the Lighthouse program opportunities to see home building first-hand through tours of jobsites and suppliers’ places of business. Finally, the past two years HBAL has helped sponsor the Spring Construction Career Day for local high school students. The key to these activities has been the face to face contact with HBAL members and their employees. We are embarking on a new venture with the industrial technology program at Moore Middle School. Ben Carey and Kelli Fleek are heading up this effort in cooperation with Jane Edwards, the IT teacher, and Gary Zapla, Moore MS principal. It is a two-part effort, focused on getting accurate information about construction careers to middle school students. HBAL members will be involved in assisting with an after-school club and in 8th grade IT classes. To continue all these efforts to inform and recruit future construction industry workers, we need volunteers. I am asking you to consider helping HBAL deliver these valuable experiences to students in our community. This is your opportunity to make a difference and to ensure workers for our industry now and in the future. Call the HBAL office if you would like to volunteer or e-mail Ben Carey at ben@builddcb.com. WE NEED YOUR HELP! As Franklin Roosevelt said: “We cannot always build a future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” Thank you to all our sponsors of the HBAL Family Fun Night. A special thanks to Matt Kinning, Justin Johnson and Matt Kleinschmit for sitting in the dunk tank. A big thanks to YBP for organizing and running the bean bag toss tournament. A fun night was had by all who attended. Happy and Safe Building!

2019 Blitz Build for Habitat for Humanity

2019 Blitz Build for Habitat for Humanity

In May, the Home Builders Association of Lincoln (HBAL) broke ground on its 17th Habitat House located on West Hancock Court in northwest Lincoln. We held a wall raising ceremony on Saturday, June 8, where volunteers were able to meet Martha and her family, who were selected by Habitat as the beneficiary of the home. Habitat houses are modestly built using volunteer labor, efficient building methods and local materials. This along with the no-profit loans make it affordable for families like Martha’s to purchase a Habitat house. The home took about six weeks to build, which means we had some amazing volunteers to make it happen.

A Better Home for Hunter

A Better Home for Hunter The Home Builders Association of Lincoln is seeking donations to help complete a home remodel for Hunter Whisler, a young boy diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). DMD is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. Mike Kinning has given much of his time and talent to this project and asked for HBAL’s help with the costs to finish the project beyond the donations already received. “I feel that we, as an organization, have the ability and network to help the Whislers and hope we can assist Randy and Natalie with the burden this young family is facing,” Mike Kinning said. “My family is blessed to be healthy and we take that for granted! To be a parent of a child with this prognosis and the challenges they will face medically, financially plus emotionally in the years to come is unimaginable! It tugged at my heart and I felt compelled to help.” If you would like to contribute to this project, you can mail your tax-deductible donation to the Lincoln Home Builders Care Foundation, 6100 S. 58th Street, Ste. C, Lincoln, NE 68516. • Early in life, boys with Duchenne develop more slowly—sitting up, standing, walking and talking. • Boys with Duchenne typically lose their ability to walk between the ages of 8 and 14. • By their late teens, young men lose their upper body strength, including the use of their arms. • During their teenage years, young men with Duchenne will need a respirator to help them breathe at night. Eventually, they will need constant support. • Cardiac problems will develop and can start early or during the teenage years. • Duchenne is always fatal.

Nebraska Revised Statute 76-3504

Radon resistant new construction; minimum standards. Except as provided in section 76-3505, new construction built after September 1, 2019, in the State of Nebraska that is intended to be regularly occupied by people shall be built using radon resistant new construction. Such construction shall meet the following minimum standards: (1) Sumps: (a) A sump pit open to soil or serving as the termination point for subslab or exterior drain tile loops shall be covered with a gasketed or otherwise sealed lid; (b) A sump used as the suction point in a subslab depressurization system shall have a lid designed to accommodate the vent pipe; and (c) A sump used as a floor drain shall have a lid equipped with a trapped inlet; (2) A passive subslab depressurization system shall be installed during construction in basement or slab-on-grade buildings, including the following components:

cover where the sump is exposed to the subslab or connected to it through a drainage system; (ii) The pipe shall be extended up through the building floors and terminate at least twelve inches above the surface of the roof in a location at least ten feet away from any window or other opening into the conditioned spaces of the building that is less than two feet below the exhaust point and ten feet from any window or other opening in adjoining or adjacent buildings; and (iii) In buildings where interior footings or other barriers separate the subslab gas-permeable material, each area shall be fitted with an individual vent pipe. Vent pipes shall connect to a single vent that terminates above the roof or each individual vent pipe shall terminate separately above the roof. All exposed and visible interior radon vent pipes shall be identified with at least one label on each floor and in accessible attics. HBAL Mailbox

HBAL Mailbox Home Builders Association of Lincoln,

Dear Home Builders Association of Lincoln,

We want to thank your association and Roger Reynolds and Jim Christo for lending us the ramp and installing it and removing it. It was a life saver for us. We had a little 12 foot ramp with no rails which we had rented. It was scary to use last winter with all the weather we had. The ramp was such a great help for us to feel much safer in just getting Steve out of the house.

Thank you very much for the Young Building Professionals’ $2,400 contribution to Lighthouse from the Light the Way 5K fundraiser. I appreciate your generous and on-going support.

With Gratitude, Steve & Jo Taylor ••••• Dear Home Builders Association of Lincoln, On behalf of the thousands of women and children who have benefited from safe shelter and services at Friendship Home over the past decade, we extend our deepest gratitude for continuing your tradition of sponsorship of our Safe Quarters event. Seventeen years ago, three remarkable women with a passion for our mission created an amazing event. They wanted to raise money, heighten awareness of the issue of domestic violence and allow our business community to demonstrate their support and leadership. We so appreciate your ongoing support and generosity for our mission. Thank you for caring!

To:

I appreciate the Young Building Professionals’ support of Lighthouse. Your contribution will help countless teens graduate from high school, learn healthier coping skills, become successful young adults and make life long impacts. Thanks again for supporting Lighthouse’s programs of tutoring, mentoring, enrichment and recreational activities, and serving nutritious evening meals to the adolescents of our community who are at-risk for many unhealthy behaviors. Sincerely, Pete Allman President

YBP

You all are simply amazing. The 5K fundraiser not only gives needed support to Lighthouse, but has also created a wider sense of community for our youth. Thank you for choosing Lighthouse to be a part of your extended family. Bill Michener Lighthouse Director
