President’s Message Matt Kinning, HBAL President

Thank you to all the members who attended HBAL’s Family Night on August 13. It was great to be back in person and have time to socialize with friends. I am looking forward to HBAL’s Awards Ceremony on September 28 at the Country Club of Lincoln. Last month we learned information about the City’s proposed updates to their Drainage Criteria Manual. Potential updates include updating the precipitation models used to calculate the floodplain. This will increase anticipated rainfall by about 1” which would expand Lincoln’s floodplain. There are proposals to increase freeboard requirements from 1’ to 2’ above floodplain. The updates also propose increasing minimum stream corridors (unbuildable areas next to stream corridors) resulting in more required green space in new developments. If the new guidelines are passed as proposed, a significant portion of Lincoln’s land will be unbuildable and will require more land for each neighborhood, increasing lot costs. This issue is one we are watching closely, and we will continue to have conversations with City representatives. If you’d like more information, please contact me or Michaela at HBAL.

On behalf of the Foster Care Closet of Nebraska, I thank you for the generous gift of $1,000. This donation will be used to purchase new car seats to equip parents who are taking young children into foster care. When it has been determined that a child is to be removed from their home and placed into foster care, they bring nothing with them. Our aim is to restore dignity to these children in crisis and equip the foster family with as much help as we can provide. The State does not provide car seats, diapers, clothing and many other items needed to care for a child. We want to help these kids transition successfully. Children are brought to the Foster Haven, a comfortable, safe space where we feed them and allow them to play, relax and process what is happening. We assist them with shopping in our store-like setting for brand new clothing. They choose up to five outfits, shoes, socks, underwear and hygiene products to take with them. During this time, their case manager is trying to find an appropriate placement for them. If they were not at the Haven, they would most likely be in the case manager’s car or a cubicle at DHHS hearing their story told over and over. With the services of the Foster Care Closet and Foster Care Haven, sibling groups have a much better chance of being placed together and all children have a better chance of being placed in the right home, not just with the first one to say yes. Kind and grateful regards, Cathy Ward, Board Secretary

Young Building Professionals

Millard Lumber hosted The Young Building Professionals Council for a Hard Hat Happy Hour on Thursday, July 29. Over 25 YBP members joined for networking at the Millard Lumber showroom and supported the Foster Care Closet through free-will donations. On Thursday, August 5, YBP, along with the Home Builders Care Foundation, presented a check for $1,000 that will go towards purchasing 20 car seats for the Foster Care Closet.

Networking for a Cause

The Foster CARE Closet was founded in March of 2006 after founders Patrick and Leigh Esau recognized the need for quality clothing in the foster care system. Through several placements at their home, they came to the realization that almost all of the children came to their doorstep with only the clothes they were wearing – and nothing else. These experiences and conversations with other foster parents helped them conceptualize the Foster CARE Closet, leading them to start it out of their own basement! Beginning with simple donations from neighbors, churches, and community members, the Foster CARE Closet began offering quality clothing to foster children entering the system at no cost to them or their foster parents. Since then, the Foster CARE Closet has grown to include and support a variety of different services including the Intake Center and Hope Chest. Housed in a specialized facility in Lincoln, NE, the headquarters not only accepts donations from community members and houses all volunteer activity, but also works to source brand new clothing from local businesses and partners. 19  Lincoln Business Builder
