April Meeting
As I write this, it is hard to believe we are nearly through the first quarter of 2017. April brings the early signs of spring and reminds us that warmer weather is on its way.
April 5, 2017 • 11:30 a.m.
Last month, we toured the new Cornhusker Bank at 84th and O Street and I was struck by how the entire building was filled with natural light. I even thought that, if I were a banker, I would enjoy working in such a pleasant space!
SCC’s Building Construction Technology Program Speaker: Ron Petsch
April also ushers in the annual Tour of Remodeled Homes, this year on April 29 and 30. I’ve always felt the Tour is the best way to showcase your actual work. Pictures are nice, but nothing can take the place of the hands-on, in-person viewing afforded by the Tour. Consumer confidence is on the rise and, hopefully, that will translate into a very successful Tour for all of our entries. Stop by and support your fellow members if you have the time!
SCC’s Building Construction Technology program is a sixquarter (18-month) program. Students are on campus participating in lecture/lab courses during all six quarters of their instruction. A key component of the program is building a new house from the planning stages to the final finishing touches. Since the first house was constructed decades ago, students in the program have built more than 90 homes.
This month, Ron Petsch will join us at the HBAL office on April 5 to speak about SCC’s Building Construction Technology Program. We are already facing a shortage of skilled labor in the construction trades, and as the economy grows, that shortage will grow as well. Join us for lunch and hear how SCC’s program is training its students for our industry’s future.

Modular Ramp
In 2001, the Home Builders Association of Lincoln was asked by an employee of the Building & Safety Department to help build a ramp for a fellow city employee. Because the need was temporary, it was decided the best approach was to purchase a light-weight modular aluminum ramp which could be assembled on site and, once the ramp was no longer needed, it could be removed and stored for future use. Since then, the ramp has been used numerous times by those in need and Remodelers Council members are quick to volunteer the man hours required to make it happen. Members of the Remodelers Council of Lincoln installed the modular ramp system for a Lincoln couple in 2013 however the ramp is no longer needed. We are now looking for volunteers to help uninstall the ramp as well as store it until it is needed once again. If you are interested in helping with this project or if you know of someone in need, please contact Jennie Korth or Michaela Harrison at 402-423-4225.
