Chairperson’s Message by Jeff Bielenberg
Finally sunshine with warmer weather has arrived. The grass is turning green, flowers and trees are blooming. Spring is here! Many residents of our community are getting excited about adding onto or remodeling an existing room in their home, and creating outdoor living spaces. It seems like there are more people wanting to do some kind of remodeling to their homes with a professional remodeler associated with our Remodelers Council, expecting quality workmanship and care of their residence. I’d like to thank Linda Potter and Sue Eaton for allowing the Remodelers Council to have our May 1 meeting at their facility and for giving us a tour of their block plant. I know the weather wasn’t what they wanted, but we are grateful for their introductions to their new lines of products for and allowing us to see how those blocks are really made. Reimers Kaufman offers a lot of different products that could be used in your designs. Linda and Sue are both very knowledgeable of their products and can assist you with your design options. Mark your calendars for the Remodelers Council’s 21st Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament, which will be held at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course on August 2. Sponsorship deadlines is June 14, or until all sponsorships are filled. Hope everyone can be a part of this special event in some way or another!

EPA Loses Money on the Lead Based Paint Program

Recognition will include a picture of the project along with your company name in the Step by Step publication and a spot on the HBAL website for one month. Entries cannot win in more than one category.
Report Cites Low Participation Rate
A February 2013 report from the EPA Office of the Inspector General (OIG) says that the EPA is not recovering all its costs of administering the lead-based paint program. As many remodelers may suspect, one of the reasons cited is that although certification is required by law, participation is lower than projected. The EPA made a profit of $8.9 million in FY 2010 when the rule was finalized. However, in FY 2011 to 2014 the trend reversed when costs exceeded fee collections, a $16.4 million loss for the agency. NAHB will closely monitor all of the OIG recommendations to the EPA especially the suggestion to revise the fees to meet program costs.

10 Uses for Rubber Bands
There’s a reason these stretchy rings show up in nearly every junk drawer: Beyond bundling papers, they have dozens of snappy uses. Check out our favorites.
1
Reshape a broom. Have a broom with bristles that have splayed from repeated use? Slide a band around them a few inches from their tips for at least a day to coax them back in line.
6
Close cabinets. Have a pair of doors that constantly swing open? As a temporary fix, twist rubber bands around both knobs to keep the doors shut.
7
Open jars. Slide a wide rubber band around the lid of a tightly sealed glass container so you can grip it more easily when twisting it open.
Protect fingers. Wrap the tips of needles-nose pliers with rubber bands to create a vice that helps you prevent smashing your fingers when driving small finishing nails.
Clamp glued items. Bind small projects with rubber bands to hold them together while you’re waiting for them to dry.
Shorten cords. Use a rubber band to tie long electrical cords into small bundles so you don’t trip over them.
Get a better grip. Wrap several wide rubber bands around the end of a rake, shovel, hammer or other hand tool to make the handle more comfortable to hold.
Track liquids. Snap a band around containers of paint, clear finishes or other liquids that come in opaque cans so you can tell at a glance how much is left.

Label small storage tubs. Temporarily mark Tupperware and other reusable plastic containers by writing their contents on a wide rubber band and sliding it around the containers.

Paint more neatly. Stretch a large wide rubber band over an open paint can and use it to scrape off excess each time you dip your brush. -Sal Vaglica, thisoldhouse.com
