Chairperson’s Message by Mark Aksamit
I hope everyone has had a meaningful summer and is ready for the fall season and all it brings. The Summer Bash was a lot of fun, and the Human Foosball Challenge was a huge success. Thank you to the YBP Committee for putting it on and for all they do to help grow our industry and organization. Congratulations to Matt Kinning and his team for winning the tournament. As I said, fall will soon be upon us and with that the beginning of our monthly meetings. Our next gathering will be at the annual golf outing on Friday August 28. It will be a shotgun start, 10:00 a.m., at Mahoney Golf Course. Looking forward to seeing some of you there. It should be a great day for some golf and networking with your fellow remodelers. Our next meeting will be on September 2. We will be taking a tour of the Newman Center and St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church on the UNL Campus. Please put this on your calendar. It will be a tour you won’t want to miss. On September 17 we will doing a membership drive at the HBAL office. If you know of any contractors, remodelers or suppliers you think would benefit from membership in HBAL, please contact the office and we will be sure to invite them to join. See you all soon,
Joisn! U

• About 6,250 students at UNL identify themselves as Catholic. More than 2,500 are actively involved in the Newman Center. That includes some students from Nebraska Wesleyan University, Southeast Community College and Union College, all of which have campuses in Lincoln. • The cornerstone, was carried to England for the beatification Mass for John Cardinal Newman in 2010, and then blessed by Pope Benedict XVI in Rome. • Cardinal Newman was a 19th century British theologian who left the Anglican tradition to become Catholic when he was 42 years old. He later became a priest and rector of the University College in Dublin, Ireland. He was elevated to cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1879.
Remodeling Right: DIY or Professional? It’s fun and inspiring to watch TV shows about home design and remodeling – everything from the latest looks in countertops to whole-house remodels. And YouTube and other online video sites are chockfull of helpful how-tos and demos to assist home owners through countless do-it-yourself projects. There are relatively simple home projects that can be completed by DIYers, such as hanging pictures, interior painting, caulking, and changing door knobs and cabinet pulls. And, home owners with the correct tools and a higher skill level should be able to tackle some aesthetic work such as installing crown molding. But it’s also important to know when to stop and hire a professional. Remodelers can tell you lots of funny stories about siding installed upside down – and sometimes scary stories involving do-it-yourself electrical wiring gone awry. So before you buy the latest or trendiest gizmo for your home, ask yourself a few questions.
ones are gone? Do you need to look at mechanical ventilation systems? If so, how big? A professional can tell you. How do you know if it’s right for your home? A professional remodeler can advise you on products, finishes and appliances that match your lifestyle, location, house size and budget and help you avoid spending money without a reasonable payback on either resource expense (energy and water, for example) or the sale of your home when you are ready to upsize or downsize. And how do you find a professional remodeler? There’s a question with an easy answer. Contact HBAL or search the online Buyer’s Guide at www.hbal.org/find-a-pro/buyers-guide, to find a remodeler with the experience, educational qualifications and knowledge to do the job right – the first time.
How much do you know? Replacing the exhaust fan over your oven with a built-in microwave looks like a reasonably simple swap. But if you notice your kitchen lights are dimming when you zap your popcorn, you’ve probably forgotten that the microwave, unlike the exhaust fan, uses a lot more energy and likely needs a dedicated circuit. A remodeling professional knows that.

What if it doesn’t work? That YouTube do-it-yourself video may make a tilework project look doable, but will YouTube give you your money back if you don’t lay it straight? Professional remodelers may not know everything, but they do take responsibility for everything they do.

Are there any unintended consequences? In today’s increasingly efficient and more air-tight homes, it’s more and more important to look at the house as a system. Your new windows are keeping out drafts, but how are they affecting your home’s air quality once the “natural ventilation” of the leaky old

‘She Sheds’ a Trend?
We know about “man caves,” the basement, garage or other area of a home where men can escape to enjoy some of their favorite pastimes. But have you heard about the “she shed”? The folks at Best in American Living, NAHB’s design blog, certainly have. Read what they have discovered in their latest post...
“SHE SHEDS” VS. MAN CAVES We are all familiar with the term “man cave,” used to describe a room or area of a home where men can escape to enjoy some of their favorite pastimes. Now, the newest trend popping up everywhere is the “she shed,” backyard spaces where women are creating their own relaxing getaways. So how do she sheds compare to the traditional man cave? Take a look: Man Caves: Recliner She Sheds: Day Bed and Throw Pillows Nothing says man cave like a guy propped in a recliner with the remote in his hand, but she sheds are bringing back another favorite furniture piece for relaxing: the day bed. Perfect for sitting and reading or that late afternoon nap, a day bed provides a versatile option. Throw pillows provide a pretty and decorative touch, not to mention another layer of comfort and cushioning for that nap. Man Caves: Bar/Fridge She Sheds: Outdoor seating When you’re enjoying a momentary getaway, a snack might be in order. A mini fridge and bar seem to be a man cave staple, but most she sheds opt for a small table and chairs that are perfect for two and often outside. This creates a great place to catch up with friends and enjoy the nice weather.

Man Caves: Big Screen TV She Sheds: Reading Nook Men love massive televisions, perfect for watching a game or movie. She sheds opt for a more peaceful setting, incorporating comfy spaces, sometimes in the form of a window nook. Here you can sit and read, listen to music, or enjoy nature. Man Caves: Pool table, Darts, and other games She Sheds: Crafting/Pottery/Gardening supplies Man caves provide an opportunity for men to engage in some of their favorite activities and she sheds are no different. Many of the sheds we’ve seen incorporate the individual’s favorite hobbies and can serve as a studio or work space. Some of the most popular themes are crafting, art, pottery, and gardening. Man Caves: Sports Memorabilia She Sheds: Chandeliers, Flowers, Quirky Art A man cave provides a space to hang up all those posters, trophies, and autographed baseballs you’ve collected throughout the years – mainly because they would be out of place anywhere else in the house. A she shed is much the same. As a separate space, it can be decorated in any way you choose, without worrying about it interrupting the “flow” of your home. This means you can get creative – paint the walls funky colors

or hang up that artwork you loved from a craft show but couldn’t think of anywhere to put it. After all, this is meant to be a personal getaway, meaning there is freedom to get creative and design your perfect space! (PS, thanks to daisymaebelle.com and kscraftshack.com for the photos!)
