PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE J. Chris Thompson, President, HBAWS PCI Builders Inc., CGP, CAPS A+ Ready Restrooms & Septic Inc. Slaughter Appraisal Services Inc. Roberts Realty Inc., Broker, GRI, CRS President, Korner’s Folly Foundation

As the Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem starts 2014, we find ourselves in a very historical year. The HBAWS was established fifty-five years ago in 1959. Since that year we have been through eleven United States Presidents, fifty-four HBAWS presidents, and eight recessions, including the most recent “great recession.” Most interesting, is the fact that the mortgage interest rates in 1959 ranged from 4.5% to 5%. Sound familiar? Eleven Presidents and eight recessions later our industry, and more importantly, our Home Builders Association of Winston Salem is still vibrant and healthy. We should be proud of the accomplishments of our past leadership, through good and bad times, that we have remained an ever-present organization. The persistence of the builders and associates in our HBA have proven a positive force for our industry in Winston-Salem, and I’m proud to be a part of it. So what makes this year so historical for our HBAWS? The year 2014 marks the first time since our inception that our Executive Vice President is a female. As this year’s president, it brings me great pride to start my presidency in 2014 with our new EVP, Megan Parks, and Beverly Hayes, Director of Communications and Members Services, Gisela Lopez, Finance Manager and Zach DeWaters, Government Affairs Director. Megan’s work ethic and motivation for our members will be a welcomed addition in the coming year. I look forward to working with the HBAWS Staff and our Members to have a prosperous year going forward.

Committees are forming, educational seminars are being discussed, and membership meetings are being scheduled, including two more than last year. Our committees play a key role for ideas and input throughout the year in all HBA events. I would encourage everyone to come and experience one of the greatest benefits of your membership which is getting involved with a committee that interest you. Committee involvement is one of the best ways to get to know other members, members of other organizations, and to better understand how HBA activities operate. Call the HBA office or visit www.hbaws.net to sign up. We have a lot planned this month, so please join us. This month we have a Builders Committee meeting, our first Spring Parade of Homes committee meeting, a State Regional HBA meeting, and our first membership meeting. Dale Akins of the Market Edge will be giving his yearly review of our market on January 28. This is a membership meeting that you don’t want to miss and one of the most informative of the year. If you haven’t made plans, the International Builder Show is the first week of February in Las Vegas. This year’s show will combine the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show and the International Builder Show which should prove to be the most informative Builders Show on record. As always, please do business with a member and encourage others to join!!! Good luck in 2014!!!

REMODELERS UPDATE It’s that time again…time to buy new calendars for our desks and to hang on the wall. No wait, we don’t do that anymore. Just swipe your finger across your phone and it’s a new year! The old adage “times they are a’ changing” could never be more true. Keeping up with trends and technology is more important than ever to our business. What can you offer that sets you apart from the next man or woman? How can you create more exposure for your business? What are the tools you need to make all that happen? These are questions we constantly try to answer but never find final solutions. This New Year will bring opportunities for our businesses and for the Remodelers; we just need to know how to capitalize on them. So we will be focusing on just that – making the most of our opportunities by starting this month with a program on marketing tools, how they interact and on which ones you should focus. Our VA Project for a military veteran, which involves adding an accessible bathroom and remodeling a home

Barry Wilson, Remodelers President Houck Residential Designers

for accessibility, will continue to be a priority for the Remodelers. Through this project our members will work together to achieve a common goal, creating a more cohesive membership and providing a tremendous community service. Hopefully there will be quick progress through the approval process so we can get a shovel in the ground. Plus, the Spring Parade will be a new venture, having both new construction and remodeling projects in the same event. Combining the two should be more efficient for marketing and provide more exposure over a larger customer base. We need good feedback and participation on both of these projects to make them successful. I would like to thank David Miller for his guidance this past year. The programs and projects he brought forth will be a foundation to build upon and spark new ideas as well. I look forward to being your president in 2014. Please come out, invite a friend, and support your HBA and the Remodelers.

ASSOCIATE MEMBERS COMMITTEE

Guest Columnist: Jeff Allen, Jeff Allen Landscape Architecture January/February Garden Notebook-Landscaping in Winter Winter conjures images of a grey bleak landscape. The growing season has come to an end and our garden lush with green foliage, blooms, fruit and vegetables have long faded into the brilliant color of fall and further into fond memories where one usually thinks of hunkering down for the winter. Stored are the mowers, wheelbarrows, blowers, trimmers, trowels and shovels as we start fires, brew tea, simmer stew and bundle up for winter. I view winter like I do spring where I study plants that offer interest the season holds. For example, dried mop heads of hydrangea blossoms, berries on holly, fragrance from witch-hazel in flower or the discovery of forgotten bulbs poking through the ground in anticipation of spring. This time of year is a good time for reflection in the garden as well as planning for the next growing season. I start with evaluating the garden with a critical eye; looking for gaps in planting beds that need filling, removing dead wood and pruning back shrubs and trees for thinning and shaping; thriving on the successes and learning from the failures the prior season held. Another important aspect of the garden that is often overlooked is the structure of the garden. Often referred to as the skeleton, structure is what gives your garden definition, character, and strength. Whether it is an evergreen hedge or groundcover, a paved terrace or arbor, a stone wall or wood fence, these elements provide the backdrop for a flower bed, screen unwanted views, provide privacy, create open spaces or intimate sitting areas, anchor the ground-plane and are the backbone to the garden in winter. After all the leaves have fallen and cleared away these structures are what hold the garden together. Whereas many people find January and February uneventful times in the garden, I am scurrying around with transplanting’s, pruning, mulching, fertilizing, weeding, infill planting and detailing. I love the crisp air and am inspired to keep in motion to stay warm and work up a hearty appetite. It is a great time to start a new garden or renew an older one. This year is special for me as we are building a new garden to be shown in the Winston Salem Junior League’s Tour of Homes. We are honored and excited as this will be the first garden in the tour. Wish us luck and more importantly good weather! Here’s to winter work setting the stage for a beautiful growing season. Cheers and Happy Gardening! 5

SPIKE UPDATE Are You a Legend in Your Client’s Mind or Only in Your Mind? Do customers shout your praises from their rooftops? To have a stellar business in 2014, we must all focus on providing the type of product and service that is legendary! So what do you need to work on to reach this pinnacle of success… 1. You must know your industry beyond the minimum standards required. Be the consummate professional that people reach out to as a trusted resource. Know more than other because you want to not because you have to. Take extra classes , attend industry meetings, network with people better than you. Truly great coaches want to play teams better than themselves so that they improve. 2. Learn and use today’s technology and tools. Your customer wants to communicate with you “their way”, not “your way”. Master using that new smart phone or go get one! Focus on implementing tools that will make you better and more efficient. Don’t just look good but be good. 3. Give back to your community and your industry. Get involved and meet others that can and will share ideas with you. Share your own talents with others in the community. Make a name for yourself as one that gives so that you will receive. The universe gives you what you put out into it! 4. Do the right thing every time! There are short cuts that may be acceptable but not always the best path to take. Being effective is different than being efficient. Effectiveness is doing the right thing the first time around even if it takes a little longer. 5. Google yourself online and see what kind of reviews people are posting. These reviews are viral and you can not afford a negative one. If there is one, reach out and fix it. 6. Do you having a winning mindset? Do you want to be better than you were yesterday? If the above is interesting to you and you are intrigued, read “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrnes. And remember… show up, listen, and be your personal best!

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS UPDATE

Zach DeWaters, Government Affairs Director, zach@hbaws.org, 336.464.8003 Happy New Year! Before 2013 ended, on behalf of the Associations I attended a North Carolina FreeEnterprise Foundation presentation on the findings from the group’s 2013 Legislative Business Ratings, which provide a recap of legislators’ voting records on issues of importance to the business community, as well as interesting insight into emerging political trends for the 2014 elections. The FreeEnterprise Foundation, which works to strengthen North Carolina’s prosperous business environment, conducts this in-depth evaluation after each “long” session of the NC General Assembly, and the report is available for the public to review. This is an important tool to aid our members in evaluating the impact of the actions of legislators on WinstonSalem homebuilders and realtors. Most relevant to our Associations, some issues detailed in the report include the Tax Simplification and Reduction Act, various regulatory changes to environmental provisions and HB 120, a comprehensive rewrite of the North Carolina residential building code. I encourage you to take a look at the report, found here, to see how our legislators stack up.

I also hope that with the New Year, you will actively engage with our government affairs agenda. Throughout the year we will be holding monthly Joint Legislative Committee Meetings that guests are encouraged and welcomed to attend. In these meetings we will be discussing our 2014 legislative activities and be hearing from recognized guest speakers. We will also engage in outreach activities to demonstrate to our elected officials that our members are an important resource for them as they make important decisions on issues impacting our industry. Members are our most valuable resource for these meetings with local elected officials, presenting before city councils, helping the State Chapters with their state level issues, as only you can provide highly personalized examples of the direct impact legislation has or will have on your business. Our next legislative committee meeting will take place on CCCC. I hope to see many of you there, and look forward to an active government affairs year and many positive legislative and regulatory outcomes. 11
