Support BUILD-PAC. Support our industry As a member of the Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem, I am asking you to help protect the American dream of homeownership by supporting BUILD-PAC of the North Carolina Home Builders Association (NCHBA). Contributing to BUILD-PAC is one of the best ways I know to protect this dream, as well as ensure our industry’s wellbeing and security. BUILD-PAC is the state political action committee. BUILD-PAC pools member contributions to help elect pro-housing candidates to the General Assembly, County Commission, Town Council and the court house. Widely recognized as one of the most influential PACs in the state, BUILD-PAC gives the NCHBA a powerful voice in the state and local governments. Your contributions, combined with thousands of others, give BUILD-PAC the necessary financial clout to make your voice heard in Raleigh and beyond. Your donation allows us to continue our track record of supporting candidates who make housing a state and local priority. We identify and support candidates with a demonstrated committment to: • reducing government regulations; • improving housing affordability and homeownership opportunities; • supporting small business issues; and • working for sound environmental policies. BUILD-PAC is as important to your business today as to your ability to do business tomorrow!

Spring is definitely in the air as we went from one of the coldest February’s on record to some delightful weather as we progress into March. The economics were also a bit chilly in February with housing starts and sales both down on a state and national level but no reason to worry. The indicators are still there for steady growth for the balance of 2015 according to the NAHB and corroborated by Dale Akins of The Market Edge, as presented at our January membership meeting. Our HBA will kick off Spring in a big way with a showcase of new homes and remodeled spaces: Spring Parade weekends are 4/25-4/26 and 5/2-5/3/2015. Remodeled spaces will be 2nd weekend only. Come on out and support our builders and associates! Your Board of Directors has been working hard to improve our organization and our headquarters. Our Staff is fine tuning how we do business and accounting, plus the Facilities Task Force is working on a “remodel” of our own for the our office facilities and conference room. The building will get a facelift particularly on the back side facing Silas Creek Parkway where we plan to landscape and place a sign for our HBA giving us greater visibility in the community and the ability to advertise our events such as the Parades, Home & Garden Show, etc. Be sure to keep checking your email and the HBAWS website for events and when you come, bring a bottle of wine for the raffle to benefit Career Technical Education (formerly known as Vocational Education). Money raised will help FTCC and WSFCS Career Center construction students build Habitat homes. Include a label sharing your company’s name / contact information and help us meet the 100 bottle goal. See you at an event soon!

Winter 2015 - Meeting Schedule APRIL 14 MAY 12 JUNE 9 We are at the close of the 1st quarter of 2015. Wow, how the year goes by so quickly. It has been a very cold and wet winter but that seems to be looking up. Spring is upon us, the grass is getting green again and the trees are blooming. Hopefully the temperatures will cooperate very soon. As projects that have been on hold thru the winter months begin, and customers start to call about those new projects they have been thinking about all winter, it’s a positive time of the year. In my last article, I referenced the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Remodeling Market index (RMI). Following up on that the last quarter of 2014 showed and increase from 58 to 60. All of this points to a very positive and steady improvement in our industry. This information along with a wealth of other articles related to remodeling can be found on the NAHB website. I encourage you to take a look and see what’s available. I had the opportunity to attend the Triad Home and Garden Show this year and I will say I was very impressed. All of the booths looked great and the day I attended the crowd was impressive. I didn’t have a booth in this year’s show but definitely plan on one next year. It’s a great time of year to promote your business and a terrific setting in which to do so. We have the Spring Parade of Homes coming up the week-ends of April 25, 26 and May 2, 3. The Remodeled Spaces will be open on the second week-end only. May 2, 3, 1-5pm. We are still awaiting approval on our VA project, however, we feel we are very close to receiving the approvals on that project. It has been a long process, but we will see it thru. I would like to invite you to attend our next Council meeting to be held on Tuesday April 14th at 6:00 pm. It will be held at the Brookstown Inn. Our guest Speaker will be Mr. Robert Criner, NAHB Remodelers Chairman for 2015. We are excited to have Mr. Criner as our guest. I would like to encourage those in the Remodelers Council and other members of the HBA to attend. Please contact myself or the HBA office for more information about this meeting or our Remodelers Council. I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting! How to Survive the Upcoming Mobile Apocalypse from Google Google has announced a significant update to their search algorithm that is predicted to have more of an impact than previous Google updates, which affected millions of websites.
One of the easiest ways to find out if your site is mobilefriendly is to enter your website URL into this tool from Google: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ mobile-friendly.
In some marketing circles, this update is so significant that it has been dubbed the “mobile apocalypse” or “mobilegeddon.” Granted, these terms may be a bit dramatic, but they underscore the importance of making sure that your website is optimized for mobile users.
If your website doesn’t pass the mobile-friendly test, here’s what to do.
For some time now, Google has increased its emphasis on mobile-friendliness in their search results. In late 2014, search results began indicating whether a website is mobilefriendly or not. But starting April 21, 2015, Google is going much further by now using mobile-friendliness as a key ranking factor. This means that if your website isn’t optimized for mobile, your website will likely lose positions in search results in favor of sites that are mobile friendly. The bottom line is that if your website isn’t ready for mobile, you’ll lose traffic to your site. So how do you know if your website is optimized for mobile? There are essentially two options for your website to be ready for mobile. One is to have a separate mobile version of your website with some special code that detects whether a visitor is coming from a computer or a mobile device. That determines which version of your website gets shown to the visitor. The other option is for your website to be responsive. “Responsive design” is an industry term that describes a website that is built in a way so that elements automatically resize and adjust to whatever screen size a visitor is using. For most businesses, it’s better to have a responsive website than to have a separate mobile website.
1. If you’re a technical do-it-yourselfer, you could install a responsive WordPress theme and copy over your content to the new site. Be sure to work within the structure of the theme so you don’t break the built-in responsive code of the website. 2. If you’re not a technical whiz—or if the thoughts of FTP, WordPress, plugins and DNS sound unappealing—enlist the help of web design company who specializes in responsive websites. You’ll save time and frustration, plus have a much better result in the end. What if I miss the April 21st deadline? Google’s mobile algorithm update starts on April 21, 2015. It’s recommended to start the process of having your website redesigned to be mobile-friendly now. Even if the site is not ready to launch by April 21, you’ll still be ahead of the curve compared to many other businesses. The mobile trend is not going away. You’ll see Google continue to favor mobile-optimized websites even more in the months and years to come. So don’t delay! Now is the time to get started so you don’t lose out on valuable website traffic. CONTACT INFORMATION Wes Hammond Brown Creative Group wes@browncreativegroup.com 336-793-7909

Growing our Strength through Member Recruitment, Retention and Involvement What an opportunity for all of us! Spike and the Associate Members Committee are raffling off an “instant wine cellar”. You might remember we did this fund raiser a few years ago and it was terrific. We made over $2,000 for our scholarship fund and someone got 100 bottles of wine. The idea is every member donates a bottle of wine; you can bring it to your next committee meeting, a membership meeting or just drop by and leave it with Megan, Beverly or Gisela. I even put a little label on the bottles I donated; “compliments of Busch Insurance”. Feel free to do the same. Then when the winner pulls that bottle off the shelf to enjoy with a meal they will think of you and/or your company. Tickets will go on sale soon and the drawing is later in the year. Gray Busch, of Busch Insurance Services, Inc. works with all types of construction professionals, offering liability, workers compensation, builders risk, business auto and property insurance solutions. Gray currently serves on the Spike Committee and a liaison for the Associate Members Committee at the State level.
SPIKE is also focusing our efforts on New Membership and Retention in different ways. We continue to brainstorm ways to improve our blitz(s) and make contact with current members. Our HBA has created a payment plan option for members to help with dues, SPIKE members are writing handwritten notes to membership encouraging active participation and we continue to act as ambassadors for new members coming in. I will leave you with a few thoughts to live by in the HBA world: “Do business with a member;” “The HBA is like a garden for each member. When it is tended to, it will yield the nicest crop;” and “3 for free 2016!”

2015 Spring Meeting Schedule April 7
May 5
June 2
Well it finally feels like spring is in the air. The weather is getting warmer, and the grass is starting to grow. This past weekend, people were out and about all over Winston Salem, buying grass seed, fertilizer and flowers. It was a nice sight to see, as we are start approaching the Spring Parade of Homes coming up the weekend of April 25th & 26th, and May 2nd & 3rd. Everyone is getting very excited, and the Professional Women in Building hope it is a big success for everyone involved! Our Professional Women in Building group has a lot of activities planned for the spring. Starting in April, we will be collecting gently used hardback and paperback books for the Shepherd’s Center annual book sale. The 2015 Used Book Sale will take place the weekend of April 30th-May 2nd at the Education Building at the Winston Salem Fairgrounds. Admission and parking will be free. Entrance will be at Gate 5 off Deacon Blvd. If you love to read, this would be a great time to stock up on some books, and help out a great cause. Beginning in April, and heading in to May, the PWB will also be supporting the annual Ronald McDonald House “Sport a Shirt, Share a Night” t-shirt sale. The t-shirts are salmon colored this year, and they are $10/each. Most of the ladies in our group, and in the Home Builders Office, have purchased the shirts to help support the Ronald McDonald House with this year’s endeavor. The day to wear, and promote the t-shirt will be on Friday April 24th. The PWB will also be wearing our shirts in August, when we volunteer up at the Dash stadium concession stands. A portion of the proceeds made at the concession stand will go directly to the Ronald McDonald House. This spring, we also want to help support the Career Technical Education committee with their wine raffle. We voted to donate a case of wine to help out, and we brought a couple of bottles to the last meeting. The proceeds from the wine raffle will help provide financing to students helping build homes for Habitat. The Career Center and FTCC both have a wonderful construction program, and we want to continue to help them grow and be successful. The PWB is so overjoyed that we will be able to award two students from the Career Center, and entering into the FTCC construction program, with a $500 scholarship. All thanks to the Lewis & Wanda Wilson Merit Scholarship fund. The presentation ceremony will be held sometime towards the end of May. This year has been off to a great start with attendance at our meetings, and we are all very honored to have some new members come join our group! We would love for anyone interested to come join in, and see what we are all about. The more the merrier! Please feel free to contact me at any time. I hope everyone enjoys the warmer weather, and I hope to see you some of you out and about during the Spring Parade of Homes.

Article from the NAHB News Blog: NAHBNow
Workforce Soup: Effectively Managing Generations X, Y and Z As boomers age and retire, filling the gaps they leave can become a daunting task, especially when managing three different generations of workers. Speaking at the 2015 International Builders’ Show, Sarah Sladek, CEO of management consulting firm XYZ University, said it’s critically important for employers to recognize and acknowledge that baby boomers and Generations X, Y and Z have widely different approaches to work. Understanding each generation’s work ethic can help an employer more effectively leverage its talent pool, guide and spur existing staff, measure, bridge and fill and workforce gaps, and successfully drive employees toward greater achievement. For example, workers who grew up during the industrial era usually view work in a different light than those who grew up in a digital, knowledge-based economy. “When baby boomers go to work, they expect defined hours and a defined place. Work has always happened face to face,” Sladek said. “For Gen X and especially, Gen Y, work can happen anywhere, at any time. They don’t think of work as a destination. Generation Y says, ‘I don’t need to be face to face. We don’t have to have another meeting. Let’s resolve this via email and text.’” In fact, access to technology is akin to oxygen and freedom for Gen X and Gen Y, but especially for Gen Y, because they’ve never known life without it, Sladek said.Another striking difference in the generations: Gen Y focuses much more heavily on what’s happening now and quite frequently has difficulty with scheduling and planning, Sladek said. “The issue with that, is that home building does have to follow a production schedule,” she said. “They live in the age of instant gratification and don’t like drawn-out processes. For them, things simply aren’t happening fast enough, and that can become a problem.” Boomers, on the other hand, prefer detailed dialogue about projects and tasks, which can turn into long meetings and phone calls. The conflict caused by these two distinct work ethics creates turnover, which means lost productivity and lost money. While, Gen Xers like their independence and doing what makes them happy, they want to be trusted to see the job through. They hate to be micromanaged, hate to be overlooked and hate unrewarded loyalty. For Gen X, work-life balance equates to success. The Xers, often characterized as latchkey kids, raised themselves and as a result, became helicopter parents to their children: the Millennials. “Millennials are the most protected, most supervised and most provided for generation in history,” Sladek said. Because they’re accustomed to more interaction, they need constant feedback – preferably by text or other current technology. They want to immediately know how they’re doing, what’s in it for them, and what’s their return on investment, Sladek said. Though they want structure and can handle constructive criticism pretty well, they hate when anyone dismisses them for lack of experience: Success for them is defined by happiness. For boomers, who strive to leave a legacy, success is defined by position and salary increases, and whether or not they’ve achieved financial independence. And then there’s Gen Z – the digital natives. This generation will join the workforce in the next few years, and Sladek advises employers to get ready. “If you’ve had difficulty engaging Gen Y, well get ready for Gen Z. Gen Z is Gen Y on steroids,” Sladek said. The advantage of having a multigenerational team is the unique mishmash of strengths, ideas and approaches to obstacles and problems you get, Sladek said. The key to success is figuring out how to seamlessly integrate these facets without alienating team members. To foster positive relationships among all of your employees, Sladek recommends more coaching and less management; mutual respect, no matter the position or title; and team building activities such as training, weekly meetings and fun after-hours events. 18
