By Yvonne C. Harper HBTSnews Six Holley by the Sea residents will vie to fill two upcoming vacancies on the HBTS Board of Directors. Andy Deacon, Ed Dowgwillo, Chris Johnson, Dan Ramsey, Beth A. Walter and Dale R. Williams submitted applications by the April 15 deadline. Pete Peterzen, board president, and Brooke Goldberg, board vice-president, will complete their two-year terms this year. Solicitors in Holley by the Sea prompted many residents to post warnings on Facebook about solicitors posing as Honeywell Security Systems representatives. “We have had reports of someone going door-to-door claiming to sell Honeywell Security Systems,”reads the post by HBTS. “If you are approached by someone claiming to sell Honeywell Security Systems, please immediately notify the police. The police are aware of the situation.” Deputy Rich Aloy, public information officer, cautioned residents about speaking to anyone that does not have the proper identification. “In Santa Rosa County, if you are going to solicit, you have to have a solicitation permit, and that permit is an actual picture ID card issued from the county,”said Aloy.“It is not, and I stress, it is not a tax ID.” Before a representative from a company can solicit for business in the county, the individual has to apply for a solicitation permit with the Clerk of Court. “If you’re doing door-to-door, (you have to) go to the Clerk of Court, (and) take a picture,”explained Aloy.“They give you a card and it’s good for a certain amount of time.You will know it’s legitimate because (the person) is wearing it around their neck or on the shirt.” Kelly Hobbs, administration deputy clerk, said that anyone who decides to solicit from any company needs to obtain a permit through the clerk’s office. “We require them to go through a local background check, finger prints are done, and we send (the fingerprints) to (the Florida Department of Law Enforcement),”said Hobbs.“As long as everything is clear, we will issue them a permit based on what they want.” Solicitation permits are issued in 5day, 30-day, and 90-day increments. Aloy emphasized that tax identification is not a solicitation permit, and one can tell the difference because a tax ID will not have a picture. He also stressed that if a person approaches any resident at his or her home to sell a product and the representative does not have this identification, law enforcement should be contacted.

Gotta Dance: Girls dance to success By Yvonne C. Harper HBTSNews.com As Gene Kelly once sang, these girls“Gotta Dance,”and dance they do at the Time to Dance Studio in Navarre. Sophia Villanova, 8; Bella Paone, 10; Karlee Dillard, 14; and Megan Gragg, 15, have a combined 32 years of dancing. “I like to dance because it’s fun,”said Bella, who has been dancing for seven years.“My favorite type of dance is lyrical and jazz.” Bella explained that jazz is “like hip-hop but more technical.” The youngest of the four, Sophia likes to dance because, well…“I don’t know,”she said with a smile. Although she’s been dancing since she was 3 years old, this is her first year competing. “Sometimes I get nervous, like the first time I did my solo (in January). But when I had my trio, (dancing with two other performers)I was not as nervous,” said Sophia, adding“That was fun; I want to do it again.” While not the oldest, Karlee Dillard is the senior dancer of the group with 12 years of dancing under her feet. “It just lets you… if you’re
having a bad day or good day, (you can) show in your dancing how your day went and how you’re feeling (by) how you move,”said Dillard. Although, feeling a certain way is not a prerequisite to performing well. “I had a solo and I got the emotional award but I wasn’t sad,” said Karlee. Megan, who has been dancing for eight years, is at the studio six days a week. “I don’t have time for anything else,”said Megan. “I like it because it’s the only thing I’ve ever done, (it’s) a way to express (myself), and it’s fun.” The girls don’t have to travel far to reach the studio, given they reside in Holley by the Sea. Brie Schell, the studio owner, opened the studio at 7020 Navarre Parkway close to the HBTS subdivision after she outgrew her last location at Navarre United Methodist Church about two years ago. Her studio has grown from

She wants to pursue it, that’s her dream and I want her to.” The other girls also have aspirations of dancing beyond the studio. “I want to go to (the Juilliard School in NewYork City) and dance in the Disney Parades at Disney World,”said Karlee. “At 16 (years old) I’ll try out for ‘SoYou ThinkYou Can Dance,” a show that features young dancers competing. On any given day, the girls can be found dancing because, well, they just“gotta dance.”

Architectural Variances Homeowner on Crescent spoke regarding the ACC wanting to refer his case to legal for having a motor home on his property with people living in it. Harper HBTSnews A vision of a natural backyard eight years ago resulted in an evergreen wall of different plants arranged according to color, with a variety of colorful perennials around the pool. “I had this vision that it would have a natural evergreen wall, so I incorporated crepe myrtles; (I) started with white, to red with the bottle brush, then crepe myrtles that have dark red.Then come the purple or violet, then white, then light pink,” described Art Cadena of 7521 Frankfort St.“I just went by color…(I) wanted to make sure I got different colors going throughout the year.” Art and his wife, Sherry, built their home in the fall of 2005, and Art knew what he wanted for the yard. “I actually had a whole plan because I knew I had to base everything around the pool,”said Art. “I had the sprinkler diagram, the electrical diagram and the drainage diagram – I was thinking longterm…I just had everything drawn.” Deciding which plants to put in weren’t a difficult task for Art, as he chose colorful plants and trees that would withstand the winds and heat. “You know, I asked a couple of people because I was considering having people do it, and then they told me
how much it was going to cost…my brother was coming down and I knew he had all the tools. I started making my own designs – I knew you don’t just put in two palm trees, (they) have to be in odd numbers (because) it just looks better,” said Art.“I just wanted to mix it up – I looked at things that I saw and I know these (plants) handle well.” Art chose Sylvestris and Washingtonia palms for the back yard, and sable and sago palms for the front – all in groups of three to five. Crepe myrtles, bottle brushes and podocarpus are planted between the palms in the back – creating the envisioned natural wall. “I like the privacy of the yard – it’s peaceful, really
quiet,”said Art. Art, though, wasn’t able to identify the plants around the pool. “I’m terrible,” said Art with a laugh.“I should know all this stuff.” He didn’t set out to select specific plants, just perennials that would provide color and withstand the full sun. The patio that extends to the pool is covered with a pergola that has a confederate jasmine reaching its branches through the beams, creating a natural covering. “This thing grows like crazy,”said Art of the jasmine.“I just treat it like a hedge and chop it – there’s

It’s really pretty, but when the flowers drop, they just drop on the patio.” To reduce the blanketing of flowers on the patio, Art keeps his blower out and each afternoon he clears the patio of the fragrant flowers. Aside from the trees that he had professionally planted, he and his wife planted everything in about five days in the summer of 2006. “We had grass, the sprinkler system and all the plants. We got all the plants where we wanted them… we did it probably in about five days,” said Art.“We got them (the plants) small and let time do its work and now they look their best.” His brother helped him
level the yard by putting in a small cement barrier under the fence that is level to his home. The result is a sixfoot fence that appears taller – and a level back yard. “Every tool from the Tool Shack you could rent, we probably rented and I used every tool that he had,”said Art. For the homeowner that doesn’t know much but wants better landscaping, Art recommends keeping it simple. “First of all, get something that can handle the winds around here; groups of three (for trees), but don’t make it so symmetrical – make it look natural,” said Art.“And don’t put in too much. A lot of people have a tendency to add too much
(to the front) and before you know it, it takes over.” His yard appeals to many people and he has had several stop by to ask about his yard and the process he went through to get it to its present point. As much as he loves his yard and home though, in about five years, he and Sherry will trade sunny Florida for a much-cooler South Dakota where they intend to create a horse ranch and autistic program. But for now, Art can be seen on weekends, tending the yard he designed and handcrafted. “I just take pride in it,”said Art. And that pride is why his yard was selected for May’s Yard of the Month.

Air Conditioning One It’s a sticky situation when the air conditioning busts on a sweltering summer day in the Panhandle. Roger Rogers, owner of Air Conditioning One, makes sure residents don’t have to bear the heat for long. He offers 24-hour emergency service and always strives to fix the air conditioning unit the same day as the call. A quick response to fix the air conditioning is an important for the clients of Tom Shumack, owner of Gulf Properties Realty, Inc. in Navarre. Shumack has worked with Rogers for three years and said he’s “reliable”and will make every effort to fix it fast. “If I have people sitting in a rental unit on vacation they won’t want to wait three days to get the air conditioning fixed so it has got to be done right away,” Shumack said.“(Roger) responds very quickly.” Rogers started in the air conditioning and heating industry in 1993 while he worked for the Escambia School District. Once he was professionally licensed, he founded his company Southern Breeze Air Conditioning in 1996. He sold the company in 2003 to retire. Although he enjoyed the extra time for fishing, he missed the work and started Air Conditioning One in 2008. Air Conditioning One serves the Navarre, Gulf Breeze, Milton and Pensacola area. Rogers said his
daily schedule is packed with about five calls each day and said most of his business comes from wordof-mouth. To diagnose and fix a problem with an air conditioning unit usually takes upwards of an hour, he said. He will quote a flat rate for the job and won’t charge extra if it takes longer than expected. And if for some reason he can’t fix the machine, he won’t charge. “The bottom line is that I’m going to be fair and I’m not going to rip you off,”Rogers said.“I was just raised that way.” Rogers spent four years in the Army and was promoted to Sergeant before he left for the civilian world. He donates every month to the Wounded Warrior Project. Rogers normally charges $88 for a service call but his discount for military and senior citizens is $58 for a service call. “Senior citizens are on a fixed income and this is my respect to show them my gratitude,” Rogers said.“And our military keeps our country safe so it’s to give my thanks for their service for fighting for us.” To book an air conditioning appointment call (850) 939 – 5522 or visit www.airconditioningone.com

During the month of March, we sent out 450 Collection letters and have received back more than $72,000 in past due assessments. Security cameras have been installed at the Barrett Beach House, the maintenance building and the tennis courts. We put in a road to Pavilion 4 near the water. The irrigation over at the ponds has been completed. The pool renovation has begun as well as the replacing the 399 pavilion. The staff went out and removed the old fire pit under the existing pavilion. We installed a new sign near the driveway that lets everyone know where the facilities are located. Pavers around the breezeway and the tennis courts were repaired, as well as some fencing at the beach and the security gate. We have also begun replacing the old plywood floor in the loft of the maintenance building. We installed new eyewash stations in the lifeguard shack, Beach House custodial closet and recreational custodial closet. A defibrillator was installed in the Beach House. Finally, we are continuing to clear the 60,000 square feet of beach area to the west of the walkway down at the beach. n During the month of March, the Architectural department handled 46 new violations and resolved 15 outstanding ones. We had 10 new home starts and finals on 5 more. Also, 15 home improvement applications were submitted and 11 were completed. Our ends of March financials for HBTS are as follows: ■ Cash Account Balances • Operating Account $2,674,825.00 • Reserve Account $402,352.00 • Improvement and Expansion $182,319.00 ■ $144,024.00 uncollected for 2013; 91.3 percent of assessments collected compared to 90.7 percent last year. ■ Operating expenses are 3.67 percent over budget as of March 31, 2013.
