Firefighters from Holley-Navarre Fire District responded to a 911 call from homeowners on July 25 at the 2900 block of PGA Boulevard in Holley by the Sea following a lightning strike that hit the home the previous evening. Battalion Chief Howie Rounsaville of HNFD said that the call came in at 7:51 a.m. and crews responded at 7:52 a.m. When they arrived on the scene, there was no smoke or flames visible. The homeowner stated that they had experienced a lightning

strike at approximately 4 p.m. the previous day and contacted their home security company and Gulf Power. Both agencies assured the homeowners that all was well. While getting ready in the morning of July 25, the homeowner smelled smoke and called 911. Rounsaville said that when the units from HNFD responded, they noticed smoke coming from the eaves of the home. “It had been slowly burning for a while,”said Rounsaville. Crews from HNFD then ran hoses to the second floor of the home with the assistance of fire-

fighters from Midway Fire District. Fire Chief Mike Howard of Navarre Beach Fire Department stood by at the command post for assignments and Florosa Fire Department stood by at the hydrant. “We saw that the source of the fire was in the attic, using thermal imaging cameras,”Rounsaville said.“Crews extinguished the fire after pulling the ceiling.” The house sustained moderate damage to a bedroom, Rounsaville said. He estimated the damage to be between $30,000 and $40,000. “One - by-4 burned through,

there was damage to the sheetrock and insulation. The fire was isolated to that area of the structure,” he said. Crews from HNFD assisted the homeowners by clearing debris and removing burned items using salvage tarps while fans helped clear smoke from the home. Rounsaville said that homeowners who experience a lightning strike should err on the side of caution and contact the fire department. “If you have any doubt in your mind, never hesitate,”he said. “Have the Holley-Navarre units come out and inspect your home.”

The new board members, with the exception of Hart who was not present, took their seat at the HBTS board members’ table. The board members then began the process of filling the positions of president, internal vice-president, external vice-president, treasurer and secretary. “The next thing is to look

at the election of directors,” said Peter Peterzen, president.“Anybody want my job, please?” “I’ll do it,”volunteered Traynor. However,Tashlik moved that Peterzen continue as president. “Pete asked if anybody wanted to do it and I volunteered,” replied Traynor. Board Continued from page 1 more help with staff work and assigning duties, Peterzen accepted the nomination to remain as board president. The next motion made was to nominate Traynor as secretary. “I don’t want to be secretary,” replied Traynor. At that point, HBTS resident Billy Neal made a point of order motion that the nominations needed to go from top to bottom, meaning the positions are

filled according to order. Goldberg then voiced her desire to have the internal vice-president position to which Tashlik moved to nominate Goldberg as internal vice-president. “I also have a desire to do that,”quipped Traynor. The motion to have Goldberg as the internal vice-president was seconded by Peterzen and approved by the board members. The next position was external vice-president. “I volunteer to be the external vice-president,”saidTraynor.

Goldberg made the motion to accept Traynor as the external vice-president, Tashlik seconded and the motion was approved by the board. The last two positions to be filled were treasurer and secretary. “I move to nominate Jean Tashlik as treasurer,” said Goldberg. Peterzen made the observation that given the importance of the secretary job “why it always seems to be the left over and whoever is not here gets stuck with it.”

Given that Hart was not present,Tashlik was approved as treasurer and Hart will serve as the secretary. The board of directors’ general job is to set policy that is then executed by the staff said Peterzen. For example, “if we decide we want all contractors to have silt fence and dumpsters in place, the architectural committee is suppose to make sure that’s communicated to the contractors and ensure compliance,” he said. Another example is setting the

recreational center usage for children. “The board would set policy that children under the age of 12 can’t be there unless accompanied by an adult and the staff ensures compliance,” Peterzen explained. The HBTS board of directors’meetings are posted at http://www.holleybythesea.org/ and all HBTS home or property owners are allowed to attend. The next regular HBTS board of directors’meeting will be at 6p.m. on Aug. 14 at the HBTS recreational center.

The fishing club plan is to make this an annual event for fishing club mem-

bers and HBTS residents. Billy Neal, fishing club member, said that a portion of the proceeds from the event will be given to Take a Kid Fishing and the Wounded Warrior Foundation. Neal took the opportunity to acknowledge individuals who helped with last year’s event.

“We have unfinished business from last year,” he said. Norene and Warren Gideon were acknowledged for their outstanding performance at last year’s shrimp boil. Neal also thanked all the volunteers who made this year’s event successful including Betsy Traynor

and Melissa Lambert. Traynor and Lambert were responsible for taking letters of support to local businesses. As a result $4,100 in merchandise was donated for the event. Each attendee was given a ticket when he or she entered and drawings were held. Attendees also

had the opportunity to purchase additional tickets with the chance of winning gift baskets. A silent auction for merchandise donated was also held. The fishing club is open to all HBTS residents and members can pick up an application at the recreational center front desk.

■ 7542 Manatee Drive: applied for architectural variance for a shed that exceeds the maximum square footage of 600 feet by 60 feet. Larry Larson, ACC chairman, recommended the board of directors disapprove the request in an effort to get things under control. “We decided to keep it at the permissible 600 square feet,”said Larson.“This particular (footage) is not like others in that he is only 60 feet over. We’re just trying to get a handle on the process so we can get some uniformity going so in the future, we’ll know how to handle it.” The home owner told the board members that the storage facility is in keeping with the house and does not exceed the height of the home. He also informed the board members that the setbacks were met. In addition, he mentioned that his rear neighbor built a barn in his back yard four years ago. A motion to approve the architectural variance request was approved pending receipt of two out of three neighbors’approval.

Love of outdoors leads to career

Dan Brown, Gulf Islands National Seashore superintendent, on one of his many hikes along the Great Divide. By Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press Dan Brown, superintendent of Gulf Islands National Seashore, has withstood 134 degrees to 48 degrees below zero temperatures, seen active volcanoes, deserts, rain forests, ice diving, rattlesnakes and high peaks. While those extremes may not seem enticing for most, it’s what outdoorsmen like Brown live for. Growing up in Colorado, Brown’s love for the outdoors started quite young. “When I grew up I knew that I loved the outa-doors and wanted to work outside in some capacity,”he said. In college, he had the opportunity through a work-study program to work at the visitor center at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado. “As soon as I fully understood the mission of the national park system,”Brown explained. “That’s when I realized that’s what I wanted to do.” He worked seasonal jobs at parks, with summers being spent at Olympic National Park in

Washington state and at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park; winter seasons had him working in DeathValley, Calif. After graduating from Adams State College with a bachelor’s degree in biology, he went to work for the Army Corps of Engineers as a park ranger. “I worked with them until I got a permanent job with the national park service,”he said. As a ranger with the Army Corps, he worked at Clark’s Hill Lake in Georgia, and Nolin Lake in Kentucky. His assignments have been at Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and Bent’s Old Fort in Colorado; Lake Roosevelt in Washington; Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park and Chattahoochee River National Recreational Area in Georgia; Jean Lafitte National Historical Park in Louisiana; and finally the Gulf Islands National Seashore. “I’ve gotten to work in the wettest place (Olympic National Park with 140 inches of rain a year), and the driest place (DeathValley with only 1.5 inches of rain a year),” he said.“I’ve lived in the hottest place (Death Valley at 134

degrees) and the coldest place (Gunnison at 48 degrees below zero).” Brown explained that in Gunnison, he couldn’t start the car during winter unless there was an engine heater to keep the oil from getting sludgy. Gunnison is where he was a part of the Rocky Mountain Region Dive and RescueTeam and where he had the opportunity to ice diving. Brown said that he has enjoyed all the places he has been from Hawaii to Florida. “Each place is different and special, and has something interesting to offer,”he said. The places he has visited also brought an added joy when he met the woman that would become his wife while he was in Washington. “I met her when I was part of a large single’s group at church in 1991,”he said.“And we married in 1993.” Along the way, he and his wife had two daughters and one son that joined him in his adventures. His love of the outdoors extends beyond his job though. For the last three summers he has hiked the Great Divide and will continue until he hikes the entire 1,300 miles. Along the way, he will climb the 73 peaks that reach 14,000 feet. He

has climbed seven thus far and will resume his hike this summer. He began at the Colorado, Wyoming border and has made it to Hoosier Pass near Breckenridge, about 300 miles. “I will be 65 when I finish,”he said.“Hopefully my knees will hold out.” Although he hikes solo, he carries a GPS and sends signals every hour to let his wife know that he is still alive and well. After working all over the nation, he and his wife have finally found themselves at home in Holley by the Sea in Navarre. When they moved here she told him that she loves the area and that she’s done moving. Of his job as superintendent of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, he said that it is a great privilege to manage the country’s largest national seashore and that it’s one of the top 10 most heavily visited national park areas in the country. “It is a phenomenal resource we all love and enjoy,”he said. But the mountains are still part of his soul, and every summer he can be found seeking solace in the Rocky Mountains.

Traffic town hall meeting By Yvonne C. Harper HBTSnews.com Jennie Barrett, Holley by the Sea interim general manager, is inviting all HBTS residents to a town hall meeting on Aug. 16 to discuss traffic issues that impact the residents. “We’re going to sit down and start lookJennie Barrett ing at things we can address to improve the traffic in HBTS,”said Barrett.“The final goal is to solve the traffic issues in HBTS.” The main issue she would like input on is how to deal with drivers who speed through the subdivision. The meeting will also provide an avenue for residents to address pedestrian safety concerns. “This meeting is to begin discussions… on what we can do as a community to improve the issues on the roads,”said Barrett. Barrett encourages all HBTS residents to attend to achieve the stated goals. The meeting will be held at 6p.m. on Aug. 16 at the HBTS recreation center. Treasury experiences high collections By Yvonne C. Harper HBTSnews.com The assessment collection rate is up to 98-percent according to outgoing Holley by the Sea board treasury William Stuart. Stuart presented the treasurer’s report during the July 21 annual HBTS board of director’s meeting. He reported that there was $2.36 million as of June 1 and that there is $338,018 in the reserves. The expansion fund has $141,897 for a total of $2,788,539. Pete Peterzen, HBTS board president, remarked that because the assessment collections were up, and excess funds from the previous year were carried over, the 2012 dues were not raised. “That one reason why your dues didn’t go up this year,”he said,“we used well over $150,000 for the 2012 budget (from 2011), which allowed us to keep the assessment for 2012 at the level of previous years.” The question of carrying forward excess assessments and income from this year to the next budget year was placed on the proxy. The outcome was 656 to approve the measure and 106 to disapprove the measure.

Navarre teenager saves lives in death By Yvonne C. Harper Navarre Press Navarre resident John Robert Kepko, 19, saved at least three lives although he lost his own in a car accident on July 1 outside of Lake City. Kepko was an organ donor and as a result, at least three people received organs that saved their lives, according to his close friend Eric Gonzalez. “That’s the kind of person he was,”said Gonzalez. Kepko was traveling back from Pennsylvania when his car went off the interstate near Lake City, according to his aunt Donna Kliene, HBTS resident. The investigation is still ongoing according to Florida Highway Patrol, however, Kliene said she thinks that he swerved to avoid hitting an animal, possibly a deer, and hit a tree. Kepko was taken to the hospital but his head injuries were too extensive and he was pronounced dead. His organs were donated and are credited with saving at least three other lives. Gonzalez described Kepko as a young man with a big heart and fearless. “He loved his friends, his family and he loved animals,” he said. He told the story of how Kepko took in a hurt and stranded dog that he (Gonzalez) had found on the side of the road.

Late fees waived By Yvonne C. Harper HBTSnews.com AHM Corporation, the owner of two lots in Holley by the Sea, owes the association $4,154 in assessments, late fees, legal fees and interest. The owner sent a request to the HBTS board of directors to waive some inter-

“I saw this dog on the side of the road and it looked half dead. It was a pit bull or boxer. She looked like hell. I finally got her in my car and took her to John’s house and he said,‘Man, can I take her cause I’ll take care of her?’” Gonzalez said. So Kepko took the dog and with the help of his parents brought her back to health; they ended up keeping her, and named her Ginger. “It was an amazing thing he did,”said Gonzalez.

He’s been late on the properties for four years.” In an effort to avoid the matter going to legal, Pete Peterzen, HBTS board president, motioned to waive the interest if the bal-

Kepko also love skateboarding, and skateboarding is how he met Kyle Duray who became fast friends with Kepko. “I met him in the ninth grade. He lived two streets over and we met skateboarding,” said Duray.“We hung out from then on and we became best friends.” Duray said the Kepko was the kind of friend that was loyal and genuine. “He wouldn’t go behind my back and talk about me,”

he said.“He was a loyal friend.” Duray, Gonzalez and Kepko were friends that shared the same interests in skateboarding, music, video games and just hanging out together. “It was like we were brothers,” said Gonzalez. However, Gonzalez and Duray were quick to point out the Kepko adored his younger brother and sister and loved his parents. “It hurt real bad when I heard he was gone,”said Gonzalez,“but there are more than three lives that are saved. He was an amazing friend and a great person. He would be really happy that he saved lives.” Gonzalez said that his 19 years on this earth were short, but he had a very good effect in that short period of time. “Whenever I needed someone, he was there,”said Gonzalez. For Duray, his friend will be missed. “I miss not being able to call him. He’s the only person that really understood me,”he quietly said. Kepko’s memorial service was held on July 10 at the Holley by the Sea Beach House. Brooke Goldberg, HBTS board secretary, initially disagreed. “He’s been late on the properties for four years and he didn’t bother contacting you (the board) until 2011,”she said.“I move to waive one year of interest.” After discussion about how other late payments were handled, the conversation came

back around to Peterzen’s motion to waive all interest as long as the balance is paid in full within 30 days of certified notice receipt. “It will save us in legal fees where we’re obligated to go to mediation,”Peterzen said. The motion was approved, taking the balance from $4,154 to $3,220 that the lot owner is required to pay to avoid further fees.

A family of trees on Bayou Drive By Yvonne C. Harper HBTSnews.com Little Peggy and Little Keith are firmly rooted, side-by-side, reaching toward the sky like mini-sky scrapers. Harry is smaller but his hairy body and small windmill like fans crown his head. On the side, Criss and Cross stand about five feet apart but lean toward each other and curve before straightening their long trunks. Ray and Arnold, big and tall, exercise their limbs when the wind blows, but steadfast they stand. Keith and Peggy Elwood at 2034 Bayou Drive know each tree on their halfacre by name. They can tell you when they were purchased, or seeded, and when they were planted. Keith and Peggy transformed a yard that had only a few shrubs to a yard that is landscaped with a variety of palms, vines, grasses and other trees. “In 1998 when we moved in, all we had were a few bushes, and then it started escalating,”said Peggy,“and we’ve done all the landscaping ourselves.” Keith built the house that would become home to not only him and Peggy, but their family of trees. Keith and Peggy, both widows, met at a Navy reunion in Wisconsin. Little did both know that Peggy’s first husband had been stationed on the USS Putnam, a destroyer, at the same time Keith had been – and they knew each other. “We did not know each other until we went to the reunion but they knew each

When it became obvious to them that they were meant to be together, she relocated to Navarre and they married. “We didn’t move into the house until we were married,”said Peggy with a laugh. That’s when they began their garden of love. One by one, the trees were planted. Other plants such as the colorful coral vine that abounds with small, bright pink flowers and buzzing bees were also added: society garlic fills the air with the aroma of garlic; a mimosa bears brightly colored flowers; a banana tree has a cluster of

Peggy and Keith Elwood bananas; and the spreading juniper creates ground cover. Then there’s the trumpet flower vine that snakes around the large live oak in the back yard. In lieu of hard fences, Keith planted trees and shrubs creating a natural boundary between his side and back neighbors. The trees do not just provide a home for the birds and squirrels, they also bear fruit that Keith enjoys eating straight from the trees: cumquats, persimmons, figs, pecans and citrus. Landscaping is not the only thing that

Peggy and Keith have put in to make the house a home. Keith also built a deck that surrounds a palm providing a place for friends and family to sit. He built a storage shed that is a mini version of the home; and a trellis he put in is home to a mamma bird and her baby. “The shed took about six months to build,”Keith said.“The only thing I didn’t do was the concrete work. The rest I did myself, even the brick work.” The naming of the trees came about more out of necessity so Peggy and Keith would be able to tell each other where they were in the yard at any given time. “It helps to name them because if he’s going outside and I say where are you working,”Peggy explained, “he’ll say I’m working on Little Peggy and I know where he is.” The names derived from events such as Hurricane Ivan, and neighbors such as Ray and Arnold and places of purchase such as Sandestin. But most of them are named after the old classic television shows they still enjoy watching. “We got Lucy and Trixie, Ralph and Norton and of course Alice,”said a chuckling Keith. At Christmas time, Keith and Peggy set out to decorate their home and yard with at least 97,000 lights. “The lights were a byproduct of the trees, but it has become a tradition,”said Peggy. So take a moment and meander by the Holley by the Sea yard of the month at 2034 Bayou Drive and wave to Ray and Arnold, Harry, or the mainstay Little Peggy and Little Keith. Who knows, they may wave back.

Local landscaper offers solutions for troubled lawns with a personal touch Northwest Florida is one of the toughest areas in the country to maintain a healthy lawn. However, there is now a new option for lawn remediation available to those who have tried other services or solutions but still come away disappointed when they walk outside and look over their suffering lawn. Skip Orth has been in the lawn care industry for well over 20 years, and has been serving the communities of Navarre and Gulf Breeze for 10 of those years as the owner of Father and Son Landscape. Skip said he has recently redirected the main focus of his business to solving grass

problems and the restoration of troubled lawns. “We have made ourselves the only company in the area that takes a holistic approach to lawn remediation,”he said. “Other companies only work on problems than can be solved by chemical intervention. But when we are called on to remediate a troubled lawn, we will look at all the factors that are affecting the lawn including assessing the irrigation system and environmental conditions – in addition to looking for pests and diseases.” Skip intentionally restricts his service area to only Navarre and Gulf Breeze. By

doing so, he and his staff can be much more responsive to the needs of their customers. “Since we’re always in the area, if someone has a need we’re never far away.” Skip describes a healthy lawn as a pyramid. “The foundation of the pyramid is the irrigation system,”he said.“If it is not working efficiently, the lawn will not be right – period. The second side is environmental factors including soil conditions, thatch, root competition and light availability. The third side of the pyramid is pest control and fertilization. All three sides of the pyramid must be addressed to have a healthy lawn. We are one of very few companies that have the expertise and ability to work on all of these.” Father and Son Landscape offers monthly maintenance services to keep your lawn healthy and control damaging pests like insects, diseases and weeds. Skip says that one of the things that makes his lawn service so effective is each yard is treated as an individual. “We don’t treat every yard we service with the same product in a ‘one size fits all’ fashion . Each yard is different with different needs. The type of grass, surrounding landscape, problem history and current condition are all factors that we consider each time before we service a lawn.“ Weed control is something Father and Son Landscape is especially good at! Skip says that this is because they implement

a variety of techniques and products into their service each month to achieve superior results! To back up that claim, Skip offers a guarantee he says nobody else in the lawn care industry dares to offer: A double your money back weed control guarantee! You can see all the details about this guarantee at fatherandsonlandscape.com. Personalized service is another reason Father and Son Landscape stands out in front of their competition. Every month the same person will be there to do what is necessary to keep each lawn healthy and pest free. Skip encourages his technicians to interact with their customers and respond right away to any questions or concerns they may have. Other services that Father and Son Landscape offer include top dressing lawns with sand, dethatching, irrigation pump replacement, upgrading old analogue irrigation systems to digital programmable systems, installation of complete irrigation systems, expanding irrigation systems to increase coverage area and installing sod. Skip has decades of experience dealing with different types of turf grasses and can advise you on the best type of grass for your particular lawn. If you are having problems keeping your lawn healthy or are interested in any other service Father and Son Landscape offers, Skip is available for a free on site consultation. Evening and week end appointments are available. He can be reached any time at 850-240-7935.
