By Ross McNally, Executive Chair of Hampshire Chamber of Commerce

e are moving towards Stage 4 of the roadmap out of lockdown where the government hopes to be in a position to remove all legal limits on social contact. The end of social restrictions should enable businesses to offer a full range of services that have been impossible throughout the COVID-19 pandemic until this point. In particular sectors such as hospitality and entertainment that have been hit the hardest by COVID-19 and the following restrictions can now take a sigh of relief. Hampshire Chamber is excited to bring back face-to-face events after more than 12 months hosting virtual events. Our first Meet the Chamber at Oakley Hall on 12th July allows businesses to network, exhibit and socialise. We are also launching the first annual Portsmouth Business Week on 5th July and will be joined Shevaun Haviland, the new Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce. It is important to celebrate and support the businesses in Hampshire, and Portsmouth Business Week is one of the ways we plan to do this. Read more on page 24-25.

Queen’s Awards for Enterprise The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the most prestigious business awards in the UK. The awards were first established in 1965 and since then over 7,000 companies have achieved a Queen’s Award. The awards celebrate the success of exciting and innovative businesses which are leading the way with pioneering products or services, delivering impressive social mobility programmes or showing their commitment to excellent sustainable development practices. This year 220 UK businesses have been recognised for their contribution to international trade, innovation, sustainable development and promoting opportunity (through social mobility). The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise 2020 included ¾ 128 awards for international trade ¾ 66 awards for innovation ¾ 19 awards for sustainable development ¾ 7 awards for promoting opportunity The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise 2022 will be open to applications from 1st May to 8th September. Almost all UK businesses (including non profit) can apply, and the application process is free. All applications must be made online, and you may apply for more than one category. All entry forms, eligibility criteria and information on how to apply is available below. During these challenging times, it is important that we still take the time to reflect and celebrate the success of outstanding British businesses. The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the most prestigious awards for UK businesses and an award is a globally recognised royal seal of approval for UK companies. We want to ensure that businesses can still apply for a Queen’s Award, despite factors which could have prevented them from doing as well

as they had originally predicted for 2020. We appreciate that businesses may have been affected in many shapes and forms by uncontrollable circumstances in recent months, such as flooding and COVID-19, but we want to encourage businesses to still apply and we will do what we can to support applications. That is why for the 2022 round, we have not changed the eligibility criteria and have instead made some changes to the application system to enable you to manually input your financial years. This means that you could wind back a year if your last financial year has been affected by COVID-19, storms, or flooding. For example, if you are applying for International Trade and your overseas sales growth was affected in 2020, you can now wind back a year and provide your figures for 2017, 2018 and 2019, rather than up to 2020. Alternatively, you may prefer to submit figures over a shorter period of time. For example, for Innovation, you can select a two or five year period to demonstrate your commercial success. Similarly, with International Trade, you can opt to demonstrate overseas sales growth over a six or three year period. We assess applications on a case by case basis and will evaluate commercial success and challenges by uncontrollable external factors. It is important for us to see the trends and patterns of each business’ commercial success, to see how well they performed before these challenging times. How to apply: ¾ Almost all UK businesses (including non profit) can apply. ¾ The application process is free. ¾ All applications must be made online. ¾ You may apply for more than one category. ¾ The application process for the 2022 Queen’s Awards for Enterprise opened on 1 May and will close on 8 September 2021. ¾ Eligibility criteria and information on how to apply is available at https://www.gov.uk/queens-awards-forenterprise/how-to-apply.

2021 Winners’ Facts ¾ 205 winners ¾ 122 international trade winners ¾ 48 innovation winners

¾ 5 double winners (4 in innovation and trade, 1 in PO and SD) ¾ 139 winners with under 50 employees ¾ 44 winners with under 10 employees ¾ 189 winners with under 250 employees (smes), 92% are smes

The Film Office has been established to maximise the benefits the film industry can bring to the Solent Economy. FILM EXPO SOUTH has been extremely successful since it was established in 2016, inspiring new film festivals and our networking events have helped many professionals and students connect, develop and work within the industry. Having personally worked in the film industry for over 25 years, I understand the shortfalls of the business and have therefore taken the next logical step and become a professional ‘Fixer’ for film production companies, enabling them to take advantage of everything the South Coast has to offer. The film office teams assist productions seeking locations, making them as appealing, practical and film friendly as possible. We also assist throughout the production servicing their additional requirements to source local services and take advantage of the talent and industry skills available on the South Coast, thus keeping it local and at the same time, reducing their carbon footprint. The retention and development of talent is essential if the film industry is to continue to thrive on the South Coast. If you would like to be part of our Film Community Hub, there are numerous ways to get involved and support the Hampshire and Dorset Film Offices for the benefit of all. It’s official – James is a Responsible Individual… HWB’s recently appointed Associate Director, James Flood, has been granted Responsible Individual status by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). Having joined the Hampshire based accountancy firm in 2007 following his studies at Barton Peveril College in Eastleigh, James went through the company’s training programme and gained his chartered qualification in 2013. He has been heavily involved in the firm’s audit service offering throughout his time with HWB, working on and managing assignments with owner managed SME businesses across many different industries, as well as academy schools. His latest accolade underlines his growing experience within audit and James now adds to the six-strong team of Responsible Individuals (RIs) at the firm. “I’ve always enjoyed working on audits, and really getting to know my clients and their businesses, so gaining my RI status was naturally the next step for me following my recent promotion. “My RI licence means I can now sign-off audit reports for our owner managed clients which is a responsibility I am relishing,” said James. To become a Responsible Individual you must provide evidence of a significant amount of audit experience, and also undertake specific continual training to ensure that you are maintaining your knowledge and are up to date with any changes in the sector. Congratulating James on his achievement, Managing Director Geoff Rhodes said: “James is a product of our in-house student training programme and a great example of what can be achieved through hard work and dedication. “He works closely with a number of our owner managed business clients and is prominent in the audit of many of our academy schools.” HAMP SHIRE CHA M B ER OF C O M M ERC E

Electric vehicle charging – a quick guide to grants and tax benefits There are lots of incentives and grants available for companies (and homeowners) looking to purchase electric vehicles (EVs) and install EV charging points. The Plug-in Grant: You can get a discount on a new electric vehicle if it’s on the Government’s list of approved models. This applies to a variety of vehicle types and grants range from £1.5K (for motorcycles) to £20K (for large vans and trucks). Charger Grants: The Government’s Workplace Charging and Homecharge Schemes currently offer grants of £350/ unit towards the purchase and installation of EV chargers (up to 40 units, or £14,000 for business use) – again for qualifying models. Super Deductions! Following the budget, electric vehicle chargers are now classed as ‘plant equipment’, so companies investing in EV charging will be able to claim a 130% superdeduction capital allowance on the equipment; this means for every pound a company invests, taxes are cut by up to 25p! Benefit-In-Kind Tax: owners of zero emission vehicles are subject to 1% B-I-K tax, making EVs more attractive to company car drivers. In fact, due to this, the biggest growth in EV sales is for fleet purchases. Exemptions: If you own a zero emission EV you are also exempt from vehicle road tax, excise tax and congestion charge. Plus – you will have lower fuel bills and improved sustainability credentials. Contact iDAC Solutions, your local EV specialist, for more information.

Winchester Motor Group celebrates success with Skoda Winchester Motor Company and its sister company Garland Motors in Aldershot have a lot to celebrate by both finishing in the top ten Skoda dealers in the United Kingdom at the prestigious 2020 Skoda Retailer of the Year competition. Garland Motors finished in sixth place and previous winner of the competition, Winchester Motor Company, in seventh making them the best performing Skoda retailers in Hampshire and the best performing dealer group in the UK. ‘To have one retailer in the top ten is a fantastic result, but to have both in the top ten is outstanding and is a great reward for all my staff who work tirelessly to make both dealerships a great place for our customers to do business,’ said Group Managing Director Mark Mills-Goodlet. He continued: ‘When you consider four out of the five retailers who finished above us were from Scotland who were subjected to a shorter period of lockdown, we would have finished higher if we had been on a level playing field.’ The Skoda Retailer of the Year recognises high performance in twenty-one key performance indicators across the business in New and Used Car Sales and in Service and Parts, one of the main indicators being customer satisfaction and customer loyalty. Combined, Winchester and Garlands have over 100 years’ experience with Skoda and Volkswagen so customers know that they are the people to trust when it comes to choosing their new Skoda. 0 1 32 9 2 42 42 0  |   HA M P S HIR E C H A M BER. RHH Franks celebrates 60 years of engineering excellence with fresh look and newly expanded premises Leading manufacturing firm, RHH Franks, are celebrating their 60th trading year, and have relaunched with an impressive new brand and the unveiling of its newly expanded factory in New Milton. Following a successful application to the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), the advanced engineering business was awarded over £97,000 towards their investment to acquire and equip an additional 6,600 sqft of unit space. Their premises on Gore Road Industrial Estate now spans 30,000 sqft and will increase RHH Franks’ manufacturing capacity to the global aerospace, defence, nuclear and marine industries by over 25%. The expansion project, which was completed in January 2021, comes after a recent rebrand that will reflect their values and

objectives in the 21st century and is part of a growth strategy to double turnover in the next five years. The extension includes a dedicated and improved Nadcapaccredited heat treatment facility, increased machining and fabrication workshops and storage provision, as well as new technology worth over £150,000. Managing Director, Elsa Hogan, commented: “We are thrilled to unveil our newly expanded premises in our 60th year, which will significantly increase our manufacturing output to meet the growing demands of our clients and their supply chains. “Our team and contractors have worked extremely hard to create a modern and fully-equipped facility that provides our skilled engineers with a positive and productive working environment, improving capacity and lead times. When circumstances allow, we are looking forward to welcoming clients to our new facility.”

A-One Insurance Group moves into the top 50 With 10 offices across the south, A-One Insurance Group (A-One), have officially become a top 50 UK insurance brokerage. Established in Westbourne, Bournemouth by Managing Director Ian Penfold in 1993, A-One have grown through mergers, partnerships and acquisitions over the past 28 years. Now headquartered at Ringwood, the group comprises around 150 industry experts to provide cover for clients seeking everyday personal and business insurance through to business risk management. They also offer bespoke schemes including marine, aviation, laundry blocks of flats, healthcare and cyber liability. Ian reflected on the importance of being an independent broker. He said: “What we offer as an independent has been our core strength and continues to allow us to respond to client requirements with industry-leading services – it’s also far more personal. HAMP SHIRE CHA M B ER OF C O M M ERC E

“We take great pride in a client-focused, jargon-free approach. Clients benefit from individual and dedicated account handlers to manage their policy along with our in-house claims department to manage their claims – clients are looked after personally, every step of the way. “Not only has the business grown as we approach three decades, but equally, so has the knowledge and skillsets of our staff. 80% of our client-facing staff are fully qualified with a Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) Level 3 Certification, with the remaining 20% actively working towards it. This is something that we are really proud of. “Being an independent broker has given us the freedom to react and respond to the ever-evolving industry requirements. Most importantly, it means our staff are not restricted to the insurers we have available, providing real choice of cover, service and suitability for our clients. That is something that will continue as we plan the future direction of the business, which is an exciting position to be in.”

KFA Run 4 Respite for Naomi House & Jacksplace Ringwood-based software developers KFA Connect entered a team in ‘Run 4 Respite’ this March in aid of Naomi House & Jacksplace. This involved running or walking 105 miles, with the aim of raising £105 each, to fund five hours of respite care at the hospice for children and young adults. KFA had good reason to want to be involved with this challenge, as their colleague, Joe, and his family had experienced first-hand the facilities at the hospice.

“At a year old, our son Sebastian was diagnosed with Barth Syndrome, a rare, life-limiting illness and we’d been put in contact with Naomi House who offered respite care. Sebastian didn't reach his third birthday and died tragically aged two and a half in December 2013 whilst waiting for a heart transplant. “Everything Naomi House offered to us was given without strings; they and many hospices rely on the donations of people like you and me.” All eight of the team completed the 105-miles, raising over £2000 for the charity and are now planning their next challenge!

The Port of Southampton announces name of newest cruise terminal ABP has announced that its fifth world-class, open access cruise terminal is to be named Horizon Cruise Terminal. With nearly 4,000 name suggestions from across the world entered into a competition, Horizon Cruise Terminal was put forward by Anna Chojnacka Liberska from Chandler’s Ford having been chosen at random from multiple entries of the same name. Anna wins a 7-night cruise holiday offered by the terminal’s cruise partners, MSC Cruises. The winner of the second token collect competition was Lin Malt from Hampshire. Lin wins a 7-night cruise holiday offered by the terminal’s cruise partners, NCL. Horizon Cruise Terminal joins the line-up of the four existing worldclass cruise terminals in the port which are named Queen Elizabeth II Cruise Terminal, City Cruise Terminal, Ocean Cruise Terminal and Mayflower Cruise Terminal.

Projected image of the Horizon Cruise Terminal completed.

Director at ABP in Southampton Alastair Welch said: “We are delighted to be announcing the name for the port’s newest cruise terminal. We selected this name as the shape of the terminal roof is such a distinctive silhouette on the horizon as you come through Dock Gate 10. Cruise is such an important part of the city’s heritage, culture and history, and we liked how this name suggests a new start for cruise following a challenging year. “We knew that reaching out to the members of public to help us name this

important piece of the city and port’s future, would generate some fantastic ideas and we have been so pleased with the strong response. “We’re incredibly grateful to have worked with our cruise partners NCL and MSC Cruises to support this competition by providing European cruises as a prize. We’re looking forward to welcoming our first cruise passengers to Horizon Cruise Terminal this summer, and the new terminal becoming an iconic part of the horizon line of the city.”

Winchester PR firm proves Soundbite offers more than soundbites Winchester’s 360 integrated PR has repositioned corporate events company Soundbite to develop fresh impetus following the doldrums of lockdown. As a supplier of audio-visual services, Soundbite had an internationally famous client list like Epsom Derby, The Brits and Philips as well as many regional and local companies. However, the corporate events industry was all but wiped out by the pandemic. Owner Steve Lucas says, “We were hard hit by cancellations throughout 2020 and only survived because we were already experienced in running sustainable, virtual events. I knew we needed fresh thinking to drive the business forward as the economy starts to open up in 2021.” Soundbite has used the quiet time to expand its services to offer total project management for conferences and events. 360 integrated PR has defined Soundbite’s messaging to support new visual branding, prepared the marketing strategy and written a video script, copy for two websites and sales proposal documentation. Steve Lucas comments, “360 delivered all we needed quickly, professionally and gave us some flair to our marketing. And it certainly has had an impact – we had our first enquiry from a large local authority within 10 minutes of our new event voting systems website going live.”

Southern Co-op pledges £50,000 for Solent apprenticeship fund The regional co-operative has become the latest organisation to join a growing list of supporters of the Solent Apprenticeship Hub’s ‘Transfer to Transform’ initiative. Transfer to Transform encourages large employers to pledge their unspent levy funds to cover the costs of apprenticeship training for smaller businesses. A total of £1,375,000 has now been raised to boost apprenticeship activity across the Solent. Linda Masterman, Diversity & Inclusion Manager at Southern Co-op, which operates food, funeral and coffee services across the south of England, said: “It’s really important that we all come together to support each other as we recover from the impacts of the pandemic. “Two years since we started offering apprenticeships, more than 80 of our colleagues have taken up the opportunity so this is a great initiative enabling smaller companies to offer similar benefits to their own employees.” Southern Co-op is the eighth large employer to pledge support to the Transfer to Transform scheme and join other employers such as B&Q, Utilita, ExxonMobil, Coopervision and more.

Over £1m of the £1,375,000 raised has already distributed to SMEs across the Solent region but there is still a large amount of funding available for businesses across the Solent region for apprenticeship training. catchphrase at the moment is that businesses need to ‘think global, act local’. Practically this can mean a lot of things, but from a translator’s point of view hopefully it encourages businesses to consider how to communicate with international stakeholders and customers in their own language. For example, this might be professional translation of regular business and marketing materials, or at least finding out ahead of a pressing need about the translation options available in case something urgent comes up. The language services industry itself is of course international, expanding and becoming more competitive. Surrey Translation Bureau (STB) has kept its place and reputation by responding to client technology and service expectations, whilst maintaining the same core business values. George Cooke took over the family business in 2012 and has seen it grow in terms of revenue, staffing and IT. Recent additions to STB’s service offering include subtitling, literary translation and post-editing of machine translation, adding to the company’s already expansive list of translation-related services, such as transcreation, DTP and legalisation services. “Quality is at the heart of what we deliver and for more than 20 years we’ve demonstrated that, with ISO certifications that test and document our procedures, designed to produce the highest quality work. The process for certification has of course become more sophisticated over the years and now we are accredited to three BS standards. STB and individual staff members also keep winning awards for customer service and contribution to the translation industry. This all comes from what I see every day from our staff – professionalism and enthusiasm for what we do, embracing new challenges from clients, new texts and new software.” With the support of his sales and marketing teams, George ensures that the company is actively involved in local networking and training events. STB is a member of various local chambers of commerce and engages with local businesses through events, sponsorship, presentations and as many marketing channels as possible. Client acquisition and retention is not an exact science, but listening to what our customers want certainly helps! practicing translators and language service providers. This means we sustain a continued contribution to and commitment to the translation and interpreting profession – we regularly participate in translator-focussed training sessions and e-learning materials. Our Head of Operations, Hannah Stacey, is even the Corporate Representative on the ITI Board of Directors. Despite the upheaval that the pandemic threatened, STB was able to adapt and function relatively well. The company’s wide client base meant a healthy quantity and variety of work and we’ve also taken the chance to recruit two graduates through the government’s Kickstart Scheme to aid young people affected by the pandemic. “I’m obviously pleased the staff at STB have navigated the company through these difficult times and we all look forward to finding and converting future opportunities. University awarded new Small Business Charter award Solent Business School has retained its Small Business Charter (SBC) award in recognition of its continuing support of students, small businesses and the local economy. One of only 33 business schools in the UK and Ireland to hold the Small Business Charter, Solent was first awarded accreditation status in 2015 and will now retain it for a further three years. The SBC assessor panel – made up of small business leaders – was impressed by the business school’s continued support of SMEs through the Higher level and Degree Apprenticeships. They also highlighted the University’s strong track record in embedded enterprise education – with particular distinctiveness in the creative, film and digital, and maritime sectors. The panel noted how Solent has evidenced a strong new strategy, developed their leadership and management capabilities, and embraced opportunities such as the City of Culture 2025 bid.

Anne Kiem OBE, Executive Director of the Small Business Charter and Chief Executive of the Chartered Association of Business Schools, says, “We would like to congratulate Solent Business School for successfully attaining the Small Business Charter Award. It does vital work supporting small businesses and local economies, while its commitment to supporting student entrepreneurship and growth remains outstanding. We are delighted to continue working with Solent in the future, especially with the imminent roll out of the Help to Grow: Management programme.” The assessors were particularly impressed by the dedicated faculty team and Solent Business School’s commitment to encouraging entrepreneurship and providing support to small businesses. The panel also highlighted the business school’s partnership with Warsash Maritime School, which will stimulate growth by opening routes for leadership and management training for businesses in the maritime sector and their supply chains. Reality HR supports employers with the shift to hybrid working Reality HR’s experienced team of people management specialists are supporting employers as the country eases out of COVID-19 restrictions and into a world of hybrid working. A recent survey of the UK’s 50 largest employers found that the vast majority anticipated the long-term adoption of a hybrid working model, with their people splitting their time between home and the workplace. Recognising that this is distinct from fully remote working and that employers

may need support in implementing processes and systems for hybrid teams, Reality HR’s team have developed resources to help organisations through this next phase. Marsolutions Translation Services scores an ‘ISO HAT TRICK’ A major accomplishment for Marsolutions Ltd achieving three significant ISO Certifications – ISO9001:2015, ISO 17100:2015 & ISO 18587:2017 We have, from the outset, focused on delivering service excellence, concentrating on accuracy and quality. Over the years, we have implemented solid procedures and workflows that

we felt best served our customers. The ISO journey over the last five months allowed us to formalise these processes and to give our business a full service, discovering our weaknesses, and recognising our strengths as to what we did well as a language service provider. This gave us the opportunity to make the necessary changes and/ or adjustments, in order to achieve our aims and objectives. We are delighted to have achieved the ISO certifications, further supporting

our comprehensive range of personalised and flexible language services, backed by an even higher quality customer service experience. For more information please call +44 2392 356497 or +44 7787 518929. e-mail phil@marsolutions.net Website at www.marsolutions.net

Making IT amazing Why do we have the paradox that instead of improving agility and cohesion, ‘enabling’ more flexible working patterns, the opposite can be the case with IT investment? Instead of better information flow, for example, access to relevant data is more complex, while any expected reduction in the operational costs of the

business fail to materialise. The implications are increased vulnerability, as well as an impact on effectiveness, an increased difficulty in remaining competitive and being on the same wavelength as their customers. For a report being researched and written by DECISION magazine for HB Tech, various companies consider what they need to address if IT is to deliver key objectives. Leading up to publication of the final report, HB Tech will be presenting the latest thought-provoking interview on

their social media channels. It will be available to download as a PDF from their website. HB Tech offer IT support and services to businesses and charities. www.hbtech.co.uk

EBP supports STEM careers Ensure the future of local STEM talent by working with EBP South who help businesses to develop a pipeline of future employees. Recent research from employers and education show that job roles young people choose at primary school age are ‘relatively unchanged’ throughout their education. The impact of this means that when young people are in their final years of school, and making their choices for college, they are choosing courses based on unchallenged aspirations that do not always match their skills or interests. The perfect puzzle – inclusivity Media production company Drop the Mask Productions CIC (DTMP) was founded with a laptop and a dream by Director Gregory White with the ambition to create an inclusive workspace where individuals with mental and physical challenges never have to hide behind masks for their potential to shine. We felt that it was important to ask our Kick-starters their experience: “As a woman of colour, it’s not been easy to blend in and feel valued in society. I faced obstacles every day, from employers refusing to pronounce my name correctly to being told I did not fit in with the image of a company. At DTMP, I do not feel like an outsider. I have the opportunity to explore my ambitions without pretending to be someone else. I find the environment to be wholesome and we are all constantly learning from one another.” – Noorj “After months of searching for work, I am pleased to achieve the first step

towards my career thanks to the Kickstart scheme. I am deaf and DTMP has given me the opportunity to be myself whereas I have been rejected by other employers based on my inexperience. I’m very thankful that Greg and DTMP have given me a chance to grow and to show them my skills. DLM wins British engineering award DLM has showcased once again the remarkable capabilities of a small company going above and beyond in the design and manufacturing industry by winning a British Engineering Excellence Award (BEEA). The BEEAs were established in 2009 as a means to demonstrate the high calibre of engineering design and innovation within the UK. DLM situates itself in multiple sectors, including the offshore wind industry, subsea, marine, oil & gas and lifting & rigging. From the beginning, DLM has been a familyrun business, however since the takeover of another family eight years ago, DLM has undergone a significant overhaul. One of the very first changes was migrating to online processes opposed to paper, ensuring the business ran smoothly and more efficiently – one of multiple significant changes that saw the company win the British Engineering Excellence Award for Small Company of the Year 2020.

Employee engagement specialists back mental health charity, Mind Hampshire Chamber member Growth Partners has announced Mind as its Charity of the Year. Is your business prepared for the bounce back? Lincolnwick Business Consultants & Resource Providers have taken inspiration from conversations with industry leaders across the UK to really identify the needs of businesses and their pain points in 2021. It is no secret that a lot of businesses have struggled over the past 18 months, but most experts believe the UK will bounce back stronger than ever. This will cause a lot of business to lack the required skills and resource to be able to cope with the impending rapid increase in demand.

At the start of lockdown it was generally accepted by most consumers that service levels from business would not be where they were pre-lockdown. However, we are now at a point where consumers expect businesses to have adequate working arrangements in place to best serve the needs of the

customers again. This is what we believe will be a key driver for businesses to retain customers throughout 2021, so it’s critical to have contingency support ready for when you need it. Please call 0800 861 1407 to find out more or visit www.lincolnwick.com

Does your organisation spend every £1 as effectively as it could? When I was a CFO, my organisation spent £1.2m a day. Did I invest every £1 as well as I could? The answer is no. Not because we didn’t hunt down efficiency opportunities, but there is a limit to the resources available to secure savings, and you have to focus on the big wins. Often teams do not always know what ‘good’ looks like, or the assumption is supplier loyalty translates into best pricing and service. So what really gets in the way? We don’t like change; status quo and the path of least resistance feels the easiest

path until change feels too late. I am now putting my experience to use with Expense Reduction Analysts, a leading global network of expert cost optimisation consultants, with over 750 consultants, operating in more than 40 countries. Importance of email marketing for SMBs Email marketing continues to be the primary driver of customer retention and acquisition for small and medium-sized businesses. In fact, 81% of SMBs still rely on email as their primary tactic for customer acquisition. There’s no surprise that with this widespread popularity, the return on investment (ROI) is massive. In other words, a well-thought-out email marketing strategy will make you money. In order to be successful, you’ll need:

a mailing list, compelling content, and great designs in mind. However, you should start by choosing the right email marketing software for your business. For example, the Really Simple System’s Email Marketing tool allows you to efficiently create, personalise, and optimise marketing emails that feel and look professional without requiring your own designers or IT support. Additionally, for long term success it’s advantageous to manage your email data within a CRM system (like Really Simple Systems) so your marketing team can easily analyse the success of your email marketing, and follow up on opportunities.

Bounce back with clean energy Tackling climate change is on everyone’s mind, but how can businesses do their part? Here, energy consultants U4L share three recommendations to help you reduce costs with a cleaner energy strategy: Review your energy contracts Many suppliers now offer 100% renewable energy at no additional premium, so there’s no excuse to keep running your business on fossil fuels.

Implement efficient solutions Replacing ageing lighting and heating systems with modern solutions can help you use less energy overall and reduces your bills as a result.

Install an energy management system An EMS tells you how your business uses energy in real time, automates processes like turning off lights and helps you identify areas of wastage. The government has set a net zero target for 2050, but businesses are already working to get ahead and reduce their environmental impact now.

With relatively simple changes, we really can make a world of difference. U4L: info@u4luk.com 01202 800200

Solent to be a Freeport The Solent has been selected by the government as one of the eight regions in England to be a Freeport. Freeports are an important part of the UK’s post-COVID economic recovery, and the Solent Freeport will unlock billions of pounds’ worth of investment, create tens of thousands of new jobs and level up our important coastal communities. Arrangements with government are currently being finalised, with a view to final confirmation of the tax sites and customs sites before the Freeport becomes operational at the end of the year. Freeports are areas designated by the government that will benefit from incentives to encourage economic activity. Freeports operate with both ‘tax’ and ‘customs’ sites. Tax sites will offer occupiers business rates relief and other incentives to support capital investment, skills and employment. Business rates growth generated at the tax sites can be retained locally and reinvested in the area. Customs sites will help enable the tariff-free movement of goods for both export and import through simplified customs procedures. The full business case is now being developed for approval by government

– MHCLG and HM Treasury – and the tax sites and customs sites are expected to be agreed by government in the coming months. Establishing the Solent Freeport will enable the creation of 52,000 new skilled and semi-skilled jobs including 26,000 direct jobs in the Solent and 26,000 in the wider UK supply chain. It is an investment in our future, providing both instant impact and long-term benefits. It will act as a magnet for an estimated £2 billion of extra investment comprising £1.4 billion from the private sector and £600 million in complementary public sector investment. The Solent has a track record in translating innovation and new technologies into commercial success, and there is an appetite for innovation and building sustainable, long-term

opportunities now and in the future. Focused on the Solent’s most disadvantaged communities, high quality employment space will be created, with investment targeted at state-ofthe-art growth sectors and groundbreaking approaches to decarbonisation. Partnerships with our three worldclass universities and research assets, alongside a dedicated Solent Freeport Green Growth Institute will provide a centre of excellence in green skills and jobs to ensure local communities – and in particular our young people – can benefit from opportunities created. COVID-19 has widened the opportunity gap for the UK’s most deprived communities and a Solent Freeport provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reverse this. www.solentfreeport.com

Although refreshing the SME fleet mix may not have seemed business critical, the journey to zero emission road transport for new cars and vans in 2030 – the government’s deadline for electrification – is picking up pace. Backed up by calls from the likes

of the British Chambers of Commerce, the right support will help SMEs embrace opportunities and get ahead of the EV curve. Luke Flinders, head of affinity partnerships, British Chambers of Commerce, said: “We warmly welcome this pledge of support for SMEs from the AA. Businesses have been busy adapting since the events of 2020 and early 2021 but it is hugely important smaller organisations aren’t overlooked. SMEs need clear advice and trusted partners in order to be able maximise the opportunities ahead.” Marc Samuel, head of SME and B2B telesales at the AA, added: “2020 was a year we will never forget and one that many businesses are still working hard to navigate. Now, more than ever, we want to ensure SMEs are front of mind and getting the support they need. “We’re at a really exciting point in automotive history and, looking ahead, there are many options for businesses

to embrace low emission vehicles and the benefits for their operations. I urge SMEs to lean on their partners, ask the difficult questions and make sure their voices are heard. “Indeed, we recently celebrated a 98th anniversary with one of our SME customers, which is a fantastic testament to our heritage of working with smaller businesses. We’re ready to listen, support and guide now, just as we have been for more than 100 years.”

Our partner The AA, provider of Chamber Roadside Assistance, has further pledged support to SMEs with the launch of a new yellow paper ‘Keeping the UK’s SMEs on the Road’. Our partnership with AA allows us to offer our members exclusive discounts to save on their fleet breakdown cover. Contact membership@hampshirechamber.co.uk for more information
