R

eflecting on 2021, Brexit uncertainty as well as the COVID-19 pandemic have been significant challenges for businesses across Hampshire and the rest of the UK.

Throughout this year, the Chamber has worked to inform and support business in Hampshire through these struggles with the ongoing Chamber of Solutions series, International Trade webinars and training to cover new processes and rules, informing of available government financial and information support as well as supporting government schemes such as the Kickstart Scheme where we have created jobs for thousands of young people who have been out of twork. Hampshire Chamber was excited to host the Boat Show Lunch in September; this has been the first major in person event that the Chamber has hosted in 18 months. The opportunity for Hampshire Chamber members and other local businesses to network in person again is a step forward towards normality. Looking towards 2022, we will continue to support businesses through the ‘new normal’ and are excited to work with our members in the new year.

Mentoring experience with the University of Westminster: the Mentor, the Mentee and the Mentor Officer At the start of the year, Surrey Translation Bureau’s Head of Project Management, Jessica Truelsen, was invited to take part in a mentorship scheme with language graduates from the University of Westminster. Jessica is very passionate about inclusivity across the languages industry for those at varying stages of their career, so she jumped at the chance to show potential newcomers what the industry can offer and how they can find their place within it. The mentor application process was quick and simple and, once accepted, Jessica was invited to a training session that outlined key mentoring skills, as well as some dos and don’ts around confidentiality and safeguarding. After the training session, she received her mentee’s details fairly quickly, who then promptly got in touch to organise their first session together. From the first meeting it was clear that Kalina was thoroughly engaged in the programme and was committed to getting the most out of their sessions. Jessica covered some general careers topics such as CVs and cover letters, best practice for job applications, and tips for interviews. They also discussed what industry-specific roles would suit Kalina’s interests and identified some relevant CPD (Continuing Professional Development) courses she could attend over the summer. Jessica adds, “Overall, I found the mentoring experience to be very rewarding; the flexibility of the programme meant that planning was effortless and having a student who was enthusiastic and wanted to learn as much as possible made all the difference. I would definitely recommend the programme to professionals and future students, and I’m thoroughly looking forward to seeing a friendly face in the industry in a few months’ time!” Kalina Mendy, the mentee, also shares her experience, “I joined the sessions unsure about where my career path was going post university. Throughout these meetings, Jessica created a space where I could openly discuss and ask questions about project management, Jessica’s own professional development and working within the language industry. I was also given insight into the daily activities of a project manager and offered support and advice about entering the industry post university. “Overall, my experience as a mentee with Jessica was insightful, confidence-boosting and extremely inspiring. HAMP SHIRE CHA M B ER OF C O M M ERC E

I would highly recommend that anyone considering a career in the language industry make use of this amazing opportunity and reach out.” Sonal Sohal, Senior Mentor Officer at the University of Westminster, further adds, “Jessica has made a significant impact towards Kalina’s development. Having an engaged mentor such as Jessica can make a major difference to a student’s experience of the early years of their career.” The University of Westminster Career Mentoring Schemes aim to connect students and recent graduates with professionals for a long-term mentoring relationship. Mentees benefit from the expertise and insight of their mentors, allowing them to grow personally and professionally with their mentor’s support over three to six months, giving them the confidence to take their next steps toward a successful future career. If you are interested in a mentoring experience with the University of Westminster, please get in touch with their mentoring team at career-mentoring@westminster.ac.uk.

Annual planning for business owners Creating an annual plan identifies where your business should be at the end of the year and what actions are needed to get there. Business coach Steve Mullins from ActionCOACH Portsmouth explains two key areas your annual plan should cover: Set goals – The first stage of any planning process is to be clear on the goals you’re looking to achieve. We advise having 3 – 5 clear goals for your business which will allow you to

stay focused on what’s most important. Goals should be specific, measurable, and they should push you but also be achievable. Build your strategies – Once you have a clear set of goals, you can build the strategies that will support you achieving these. Think of strategies as a set of actions; what do you need to do in order to get you to where you want to be? You need to engage your team in what they need to do and by when so you can hold them accountable. Want to know more about annual planning? Visit our website for details of our next workshop on 19th November 2021.

3 ways to boost resilience at work With hybrid working, boundaries are so important to maintain resilience and wellbeing, which are directly linked to one another. Make boundaries and stick to them and you’ll soon feel the difference! Here are three tips you can try: 1. Make a weekly work schedule and stick to it – no hopping on a call pre-working hours or working late (no-one wants to get emails in the evening). If you say you don’t work on Fridays, then don’t! 2. Take your breaks. Regular 5-10 minute breaks to make a drink or get outside and feel the fresh air will help generate energy. Make sure you take a lunch break. When we are stressed our digestive systems don’t work properly and our energy dips – give your body the space and time it needs to function! 3. Don’t book meetings in back-to-back – give yourself time to process the last conversation and prepare for the next one – the person you’re meeting will appreciate this too. www.thejoydept.co.uk  emily@thejoydept.co.uk  07922865303.

Help To Grow: Management With Rishi Sunak’s £520M ‘Help To Grow’ scheme delivered by the University of Portsmouth now well underway, it seems the 12-week Help to Grow: Management programme is being well received by businesses. ‘This is a thought provoking and detailed course, with relevant content in a fantastic mixture of online and in person teaching, allowing you time to work as well as improve skills. It has already added value to business, and will help in areas that need improvement or highlight those that need other outside input, as well as cement current understanding. No one person can be fabulous at everything despite their best efforts.’ – Rosie Bouillon-Barrett, Head of Finance at SeaCat Services ‘The programme offers incredible value for money – you don’t get the opportunity to get world class business support and mentoring every day so grab it while you can. The programme takes a structured look at everything you need to have in place in your business, and provides a toolkit that works not only today, but that you can come back to time and time again, as your business evolves.’ – Geoff Wilkinson, Managing Director at Wilkinson Construction Consultants Ltd.

A multi-million pound economic boost forecast following recordbreaking year for cruise at Portsmouth International Port

December 2021 8th Preferential Rules

of Origin/Customs Procedures

January 2022

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, 2021 is set to become the most successful in Portsmouth International Port’s history for cruise operations, with a record number of days alongside, maiden calls, and forecast economic growth for the city, published in a report to Portsmouth City Council’s Cabinet on Tuesday 5 October. By the end of the year the port is expected to see over 130 days of ships alongside, in comparison to the last previous high of 65. The port has seen the most ever maiden calls, with eight new cruise ships coming to Portsmouth for the first time including TUI’s Marella and Marella Explorer 2, the world largest square-rigged sailing vessel, Golden Horizon, Regent’s Seven Seas’ Splendor, Fred Olsen’s Borealis. Virgin Voyages launched their world first passenger sailing from the city on their brand ship Scarlet Lady, which at 277m is the now the largest ship ever managed by the port. Finally luxury line Viking launched their first UK based turnarounds from the city, and also the inaugural departure for their brand new vessel Viking Venus. The port also hosted its first naming ceremony, which saw Saga’s Spirit of Adventure christened in Portsmouth with a traditional bottle smashing event, live streamed across the globe. In August the port also managed three cruise ships at one time, making use of multi berths. With plans to create a terminal extension to accommodate the anticipated increase in cruise passengers due to be completed by spring 2023, an independent assessment from Oxford Economics on the value of cruise growth to the city over a 40 year period from 2021 has been estimated securing £205m for UK GDP per annum. The terminal transformation development will support an average GDP contribution of £43 million per annum to the Portsmouth City Council area over a 40-year period. Mike Sellers, Portsmouth International Port’s director, said: “While this has been a difficult couple of years for the industry, what we have seen is real creativity from cruise lines in how they operate, which has included operating in different ways for the UK market. “The whole team has worked tirelessly to manage an incredibly busy period and the results speak for themselves. “Our ambition has been to consistently grow within the small to medium sized market and this strategy is proving to be successful. “We are attracting lines new to the UK market that complement the current cruise offer in the south of England. “Our terminal extension is an essential infrastructure development to support this this upward trend and I’m pleased that work will soon start to take shape.” The port will be exploring ways to capture data from passengers on the number of overnight stays and joint work that can be done through our partners to maximize opportunities for hotels and attractions in the city.” www.portsmouth-port.co.uk.

Administrators of long established clothing retailer looking for a buyer Hampshire based Portland Business Recovery has been appointed administrators of Devon based Samuel Daw & Company Limited, a family owned business that specialises in schoolwear, menswear and formal suit hire. Trading originally started in 1874 although the company’s operations commenced in 1948. Portland is now looking for a buyer for the long established clothing retailer, via Lambert Smith Hampton. Trading will continue in order to maintain goodwill in fulfilling backorders for local schools. Trading from a single high street location in Barnstaple, the business has suffered trading losses which resulted in cashflow problems and accumulated debt. A loss of some school contracts as well as changing market trends further added to their financial predicament. These losses were absorbed in previous years, but were exacerbated by the impact of COVID-19

and subsequent lockdowns. Portland Director Steve Godwin commented: “We yet again see another successful retail business go into administration due to the knock on effects of COVID-19 restrictions. Despite Daw & Co’s diverse market and customer base, which included local businesses’ workwear, schools and educational establishments as well as the general public, the sudden drop in sales has meant that it is no longer financially viable for it to continue to trade. It is

HAMP SHIRE CHA M B ER OF C O M M ERC E

unfortunate to see another much loved business, such as Samuel Daw & Co, fall victim to the worldwide pandemic. Once furlough and government support ends in September, and as businesses are required to budget for the repayment of deferred debt and Bounce Back and CBILS Loans, we could see many more of them struggle to meet their financial commitments. This could lead to insolvency and ultimately mean that many well-known brands may disappear forever.”

The Gurkha Museum Special stories of comradeship, service and sacrifice and the unprecedented bond between soldiers from countries half a world apart. Telling the story of this unique fighting force, from its origins in the Anglo-Nepal War of 1814-16 to global deployment as part of the British Army today, The Gurkha Museum made its home in Winchester more than 30 years ago. The Gurkha Museum tells a cultural story too, setting in context the service

of these famously ferocious and fiercely loyal fighting men from Nepal. First recruited into British service after their fighting qualities had been recognised as adversaries, through the 19th century they played an important part in policing and protecting the borders of British India. In the 20th century Gurkha soldiers saw action on the Western Front, in Palestine and Mesopotamia in the First World War, and in every major land theatre of the Second World War. Today’s Brigade of Gurkhas has played a key role in all recent conflicts, sadly suffering 14 fatalities in Afghanistan.

Charity founder walks to raise money to help the community Lymington based charity Hammersley Homes has been able to launch a new and much needed service for the Southampton and New Forest area after its founder Louise Hallett walked the coast of the Isle of Wight raising nearly £70,000. Louise, who founded the charity that aims to provide lifelong homes, friendship, and support for those with enduring

mental illness, undertook the walk in July and has now been able to fund a project helping those in the community. Louise said: “Through the money kindly donated we have been able to employ somebody to co-ordinate our team to go out and help those in need with day-to-day tasks such as budgeting, shopping or simply having somebody to listen. Many people living with enduring mental illness become very isolated and feel lonely, so just having somebody to turn to can be a great comfort.”

Regional strategic brand insight report delivered for Solent Transport Frost Creative recently completed a comprehensive brand research program for Solent Transport and have provided insights and strategic recommendations for the ‘My Journey’ and ‘Solent Go’ brands. This follows the announcement of new mobility as a service project currently being trialled. Future mobility projects will be delivered by Solent Transport through the Future Transport Zone programme and by Local Transport Authorities.

We recommended a brand strategy to identify and promote the new services and facilities, encouraging behaviour change towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly forms of travel around the region, as part of a single cohesive transport network. Mike Gowar, head of strategy at Frost said, “The insight program was extensive and engaged key internal stakeholders and a broad cross-section of current and future transport users in qualitative and quantitative research to develop a detailed insight findings report and propose the future brand strategy.” If you would like to find out more

about this project or other work Frost Creative deliver feel free to contact the team at hello@frostcreative.co.uk or visit www.frostcreative.co.uk.

Making growing your business simpler Being part of a growing business is extremely rewarding and exhilarating but it’s also isolating, relentless, consuming and tends to disturb the concept of eight hours sleep a night. The famous quote is that the art of the entrepreneur is “creating something from nothing” and whilst that’s certainly true, surely then the second big start-up ‘truth’ is that entrepreneurism is also the art of lurching from one significant challenge to the next. Business mix supports growing

companies, making things simpler across all streams of business operations, at a price point for every business. We’re centred in Woking, collaborating with other local companies helping them grow their businesses and we really enjoy building relationships with our clients for the long-term journey.

Treenhill Consulting Ltd wins a 2021 UK Enterprise Award Best SME HR & Finance Support – Southern England Pem Paddick MCIPD, Director of Treenhill Consulting Ltd, has recently been announced as SME News magazine’s UK Enterprise Award Winner for Best SME HR & Finance Support for Southern England. Pem said “I’m so proud to receive this award. The last two years have been a challenge for all businesses. It’s been a huge learning curve for us all. HR professionals like myself have been working hard with our clients to create new blended and agile approaches of working for their people. Usually

of course there would be time to plan, implement and review, but the sheer speed of the pandemic meant that timescales were thrown out of the window and quick solutions were needed to ensure the future stability of those businesses.” She added “I would like to thank the SME News for choosing me as the winner. It really does mean a lot to be recognised for the work and field that I am so passionate about.” SME UK Enterprise Awards Award Coordinator Jessie Wilson said “It is always a pleasure and a privilege to reach out to those that have been awarded in the SME UK Enterprise programme. One of the joys of these awards is realising

the sheer talent and skill that permeates every inch of the British business sphere, across all industries and fields. Pem Paddick and Treenhill Consulting Ltd are a prime example of just that.”

Freedom celebrates twenty years in business Freedom Care is delighted to announce that this year marks their 20th anniversary in the business supporting childcare and children’s social care. Freedom began as a small business based on the Isle of Wight providing nannies and babysitters to local hotels, from there the business grew organically into an organisation that specialises in children’s services offering childcare, babysitting, creche and nanny services across Hampshire, Dorset, West Sussex, Surrey and the Isle of Wight. Today, Freedom has over 90 employees and 350 clients across the south of England. “The catalyst for starting Freedom was probably when I fell pregnant with my first child, Lottie in 1998. I became a stay-at-home mummy for two years and absolutely loved it. However, coming from a large family and having moved to the Isle of Wight had made me feel very isolated. I thought if I felt like this then a lot of parents must also feel the same way. I had always dreamed of running my own business and toyed with a few ideas, and Freedom was then born. “Initially, we just started by providing babysitters and nannies to local hotels and from there the business grew organically. Working in retail gave me extensive people management and

HR skills, which I applied to a new sector. I vividly remember writing our induction manual after I had put Lottie to bed and spent many hours juggling both parenting and setting up a business. It was a very challenging time, but very rewarding.” – Fran Graves, Managing Director, Freedom Care Group. In 2020, Freedom launched their standalone website for Children’s Social Care. The company has been supporting Social Care teams since 2005, although very low-key during that time. When the company relocated to Lymington in Hampshire, this developed further when Freedom started to supply Children’s Social Care to Bournemouth Council back in 2014. Now the company supplies many local authorities including Southampton, Dorset, Isle of Wight, Southwark and Suffolk. Fran comments, “Freedom has gone from strength to strength since the business started, I couldn’t be prouder of what we have achieved over the years and I believe our core values and ethos resonates through the business, staff and care teams. This business would not be what it is today if it wasn’t for those

HAMP SHIRE CHA M B ER OF C O M M ERC E

working for Freedom and my amazing family who have supported me from the beginning”. Fran continues, “When we started the business in 2001, we couldn’t have hoped to achieve what we have. What we find most rewarding is some of the toddlers we cared for in the early days, becoming child carers now they’re all grown up.” To celebrate this momentous occasion, Freedom organised a celebratory event on 11th September at Elmer’s Court Hotel, inviting clients, partners, suppliers and staff to recognise this significant milestone. Fran comments, “The event is to say thank you to all the staff, both past and present, care teams and clients, who have been on this journey with me. Without our care team, clients and family support, Freedom would not be the success it is today.”

Is everyone running their Business Continuity Plan? The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in businesses operating remotely, with greater access to file-sharing and online conferencing tools in order to make sure that operations are delivered focussing on ‘business as usual’, during the pandemic and post-lockdown. Notwithstanding the inevitable uplift in the use of digital technologies, exacerbated by social distancing and nationwide lockdowns, people are adjusting to a resilient way of working, such as working from home and accessing company and client data remotely. For companies seeking high-quality and consistent connectivity, or just looking to invest in technology infrastructure to get connected, protecting against malicious and fraudulent activities have become a key concern. Business continuity is not only the ability to deliver services

astleigh College encourages businesses to look again at career-focused education and skills development in their post-COVID-19 recovery strategies.

Darren Coventry MCIPS, Head of Apprenticeships and Traineeships at Eastleigh College, suggests many employers are missing out on free or costefficient opportunities to train existing staff or influence future talent in an emerging post-COVID-19 apprenticeships landscape. One of the most positive aspects resulting from four years of reforms to the apprenticeship programme has been the introduction of the new sector standards that have opened up a new raft of opportunities for people of all ages to learn new skills or retrain to help build a new career. Eastleigh College is supporting the changing skills needs in our region by delivering apprenticeship programmes for employers across a wide range of sectors including law, teaching, finance, public-sector, care, not for profit, construction, electro-technical, plumbing, gas, refrigeration and hospitality. And we don’t just enrol apprentices in September. However, many businesses have been left baffled by different funding streams and changing legislation. To better serve employers across the region, Eastleigh College is working with Business South, Solent University and other FE colleges on the south coast to ensure that all employers have access to impartial advice and involvement in career-focused education and skills development. By working together, we’ll be able to help employers see the wood for the trees, have their say in the development of tomorrow’s workforce and truly benefit from the education, training and apprenticeship opportunities that are available. Eastleigh College can lend business support to conduct a workplace training needs analysis, identify the relevant training provision available across the region and engage and support people to learn. By working together, we’ll be able to help employers see the wood for the trees, have their say in the development of tomorrow’s workforce and truly benefit from the education, training and apprenticeship opportunities that are available. Apprenticeships and Traineeships are cost effective ways to invest in your workforce, by employing new recruits to learn a trade and also by upskilling existing staff of all ages. Newstyle apprenticeships are based on revised standards drawn up by employer groups and now open up the possibility of obtaining a degree level qualification to people who never thought this possible. Degree apprenticeships combine working with studying part-time at a university, enabling students to earn money while in higher education. Degree apprentices are employed throughout the programme, and spend part of their time at university and the rest with their employer. This can be on a day-to-day basis or in blocks of time, depending on the programme and requirements of the employer. If you wish to find out more or to discuss your organisation’s training needs, email bebetter@eastleigh.ac.uk or call 023 8091 1000.

Southampton Boat Show

Business leaders return for Hampshire Chamber’s Boat Show lunch Storm navigation was the key theme as Hampshire Chamber of Commerce welcomed the return of its popular Southampton International Boat Show lunch. More than 120 business leaders attended the occasion, held just yards from the show at the Leonardo Royal Hotel Southampton Grand Harbour. Recognised as the signature event on the business membership organisation’s social calendar, the lunch could not take place last year because of the pandemic hiatus. Keynote speaker this year was Warsash-based round-the-world yachtsman and ex-BT Global Challenge skipper Mark Denton. Drawing on his theme of ‘navigate the storm’, he put the subject of resilience in the face of challenges into a business context. Mark said: “A lot of people think we are coming out of the storm because they feel Covid is receding but its longlasting impact is still affecting business, so in fact the storm is still in front of us. “My message is all about emerging stronger from adversity and change. In business you need to do three things with your teams. First, start with safety. That means emotional and psychological safety. Don’t sleepwalk. Have honest, open discussions about confronting the challenges you face. “Second, hoist happiness. Make sure people are on board and happy to work well and contribute. “Finally, focus on fast. Slow boats never win. You have to respond quickly to what has changed for you.” Also speaking at the event, and keen to highlight the economic benefits of the Boat Show, were Lesley Robinson of show organisers British Marine and Councillor Daniel Fitzhenry, Leader of Southampton City Council. Lesley told the audience: “The past 18 months have proved how resilient

the British marine industry really is, and we are delighted and excited to be back this year with Britain’s biggest boating and watersports show. “We are welcoming over 350 marine brands, and over 500 boats, including 300 on the marina and we are expecting over 100,000 visitors over the ten-day event. “This year we are focusing even more on the local residents with a dedicated Community Day and we anticipate encouraging 14,000 people to get out on the water.” Councillor Fitzhenry also stressed community involvement. He said: “It is great to see the Boat Show back in our waterfront city and helping to get Southampton moving again. We are delighted to be working with Hampshire Chamber of Commerce and British Marine as well as the business community. We encourage residents across the city to take advantage of the reduced entry fee on community day, to enjoy activities such as paddle boarding and connecting with the water.”

HAMP SHIRE CHA M B ER OF C O M M ERC E

In staging the lunch, Hampshire Chamber marked 52 years of continuous involvement since the first Boat Show took place. Peter Taylor, Hampshire Chamber Board member and leader of the Chamber’s Southampton team, said: “The Boat Show is a key asset for Southampton. It attracts people from far and wide, puts us on the international stage and provides a real boost for the local and regional economy. For it to be back on the calendar is a hugely positive step forward. We thank each of our speakers for sharing their insight on business and the marine sector and Mark especially for his thoughts on staying resilient and positive in the face of stormy seas.” Previous keynote speakers at the annual Chamber lunch include Desert Orchid jockey Colin Brown, elite yachtsman Conrad Manning and wheelchair rugby player Aaron Phipps, a member of Great Britain’s gold medal-winning team at this summer’s Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Top five alternatives to redundancy Before making staff redundant, there are alternatives that are worth considering.

My reunion with business meaning I recently came across my first ever business plan and was reassured to see that even in the early days, my aim was to work with businesses that make a positive difference. The reason for mentioning this trip down memory lane is that over the summer, I spent time re-exploring the meaning of my business and re-evaluating what’s important. I used an ‘archetypes in branding’ toolkit to examine my brand, revisited my beliefs and values and took a critical look at whether there is alignment between what I say and what I do. It was a very powerful and worthwhile exercise. I’ve since introduced the toolkit to clients and have been impressed by how it has enabled them to reconnect with the meaning of their business and to discover how they can be a force for good while still making a profit. – Julie Jackson Be seen, heard and understood www.brandbiography.co.uk HAMP SHIRE CHA M B ER OF C O M M ERC E

1.  Reduction in pay, but with the same hours – eg ten members of staff agree to a 10% pay reduction instead of making one role redundant 2.  Reduction in hours with associated reduction in pay - eg five full time employees take a 20% pay cut each and work four days instead of five, instead of making one role redundant 3.  Job share. An employer may have two full time employees who will agree to job share, to keep both in a job 4.  Sabbaticals/career breaks. These are rare in the private sector, but an employer could relax the rules and offer this option broadly 5.  Re-training. Good employees can be retrained or redeployed. It’s vital that any changes are handled properly, as they would be a change to an employee’s contract of employment and cannot be imposed unilaterally. https://parissmith.co.uk/blog/avoid-redundancies-postlock-down/ Charlotte Farrell, Associate Charlotte.farrell@parissmith.co.uk 07384 258703.

Because tomorrow starts today Home-Start Hampshire’s volunteers offer a helping hand to families with young children (0-11years) who are facing a tough time. Our ethos is about experienced trained parent volunteers offering friendship, support, and practical help for 2 – 3 hours a week to newer parents who are facing difficulties. A little help at the right time can help prevent further problems down the line. Sometimes we’re helping a parent who has had twins or is ill or not coping; sometimes it’s a child with a disability or difficulties; sometimes it’s just that life seems tough and can be overwhelming.

Can you help us? We always need volunteers with parenting experience to join our homevisiting team, help regularly in our Family Groups or to help us with publicity and recruitment.

Dutton Gregory thanks Partner of 30 years One of the longest-serving Partners of Dutton Gregory Solicitors is retiring after 37 years at the firm. Richard moved to Hampshire from Norfolk in 1980 to study law at the University of Southampton, completed his LPC at Guildford College of Law, joined Dutton Gregory’s Winchester office in 1984 to begin his training contract, and in 1990 was made a Partner. By this time, Richard was focused on commercial property and has witnessed

immense changes. ‘In the 80s, a 25-year lease was quite normal,’ he recalls. ‘After a number of recessions, leases got shorter and shorter to an average of just five years which has created more of a partnership landlords cannot be complacent and tenants are in a stronger negotiating position.’ ‘Richard has been a diligent, conscientious and professional colleague and mentor within the firm for many years and will be missed,’ says Senior Partner, Robert Bolwell. ‘We wish him a long, happy and enjoyable retirement.’ www.duttongregory.co.uk.

Gemma Lighting support local skate park with flood lighting donation Farlington based UK manufacturer, Gemma Lighting are committed to supporting the local area, community spaces and residents. In September 2021 we have proudly donated 18 UK manufactured high powered LED flood lights to Southsea Skate Park. Southsea Skate Park is possibly one of the oldest and most iconic skate parks in the UK, supporting the community for over 40 years, with strong historical ties locally,

regionally, nationally and internationally. They are a self-funded charity, on a mission to be the best centre of excellence for extreme sport for everyone, from beginner to professional. The donation was very gratefully received. Simon Tiller told us how “the new lighting will make a huge difference for users of the skate park. Throughout the winter we are very restricted on the areas of the park that can be used. The new flood lights from Gemma Lighting will mean we can open more of the park and encourage more use of the space into the winter months.” Gemma Lighting

Wessex Cancer Trust launches ActionMan Wessex Cancer Trust has launched ActionMan. It’s a men’s health campaign funded by Action Hampshire which encourages men to be aware of the signs and symptoms of cancer and to contact their GP if they’re worried. Many men delay seeing their GP because they’re frightened about what they might

Matt Hayes, medical director of the Wessex Cancer Alliance, says: “One thing COVID-19 has taught us is that we all need to take our health seriously. It might sound like a cliche, but life is not a rehearsal. If you’re concerned about any aspect of your health please speak to your GP. Most cancers are curable if caught early enough, so it really makes a difference to get checked out quickly.

Events At the time of writing this article, the Government’s furlough scheme has recently ended. Over the past few months, we have visited many different venues, showcasing their facilities and offerings to new and local businesses. Many of these venues and members of the Chamber have furloughed staff, in some cases for over a year and will be looking to operate at a full capacity, in over 18 months. Over the last few months, we have held our annual Boat Show Lunch at the Leonardo Royal Grand Harbour, visited Danebury Vineyard, The Solent Hotel & Spa and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, to name a few. Our events provide a great opportunity for businesses to connect and grow in a informal and enjoyable way. Looking ahead to the end of the year and 2022, what does our event calendar show? Over the next few months, we will join forces with our neighbouring Chambers – Surrey, Sussex, Dorset and the Isle of Wight to deliver the second South East

The importance of recruiting the right people Trusted and reliable employees are the basis of any successful business, from helping to establish the ethos and culture of the company, to representing you to your clients. By hiring the right people, you can focus on running your business while leaving the day to day in the hands of capable staff, allowing you to direct your attention to growing your venture and increasing revenue.

Conversely, by hiring the wrong people for the job, you could be losing upwards of 25% of the annual salary for the role you want to fill, being forced to direct your attention away from business growth and towards rehiring and retraining. You can help avoid hiring the wrong people for the job by implementing detailed screening, background checks, verification checks and skills tests, and ensuring that your hiring process is always improving and adapting along with your business goals, allowing you invest in the right people. With the event planned for July and rearranged for the summer break, we had a record number of student volunteers at the event, despite being ‘holiday time’. Runners gave our students some incredible feedback and praised them for their efforts. Our students are required to complete clinical hours as part of the degree; the experience helped develop planning, organisation and clinical application skills for students, while helping a local running club and charity. We collected donations for Naomi House and Jacks Place for each massage. We work closely with other sports clubs and organisations to give our students real-life experience and improve the quality of service at local sporting events. If you are interested in studying for the degree or have a sports club that could benefit from us providing massage for you, please contact James Kirkpatrick jkirkpatrick@psc.ac.uk or visit https://ahed.psc.ac.uk.

Firms encouraged to use corporate social responsibility to help ‘Hello Southampton’ HAMPSHIRE companies keen to reignite their corporate social responsibility programmes are invited to work with a Southampton charity dedicated to eradicating isolation and loneliness. Communicare needs more volunteers for its ‘Hello Southampton’ telephone service offering regular calls to the isolated or vulnerable. Manager Annie Clewlow says: “Hello Southampton provides support for those who would benefit from regular check-ins. The idea is to try to step in when there are minor difficulties before they become major.” Communicare is asking businesses to volunteer their teams.

Volunteer Linda Sharman, who worked in medical administration until recently, explains: “Although I didn’t do this through my place of work, it could work perfectly if it were on offer. Having a onehour slot where I check in with the folk who need this support is easy to fit into a schedule and a lovely way to get involved with helping out in the local community.” https://communicareinsouthampton. org.uk/aboutus/.

Local co-operative brings soft plastic recycling points to Hampshire stores Southern Co-op is trialling soft plastic recycling points in several of its stores including 10 in Hampshire. The recycling points will mean all Co-op own brand packaging will be easier to recycle in store or via council kerbside collection. Once deposited, materials such as cling film, wrappers and carrier bags will be sent to a company called Jayplas which will turn them into post-consumer plastic granules. These are then made into secondary products such as bin liners and construction industry materials.

Stores in Hampshire are The Cooperative Food in Portsmouth’s Eastney Road, Denmead’s Hambledon Road, Rooksdown’s Limes Park, Wickham’s The Square, Hayling Island’s Elm Grove, Liphook’s Headley Road, Alresford’s West Street, Overton’s Winchester Street, Clanfield’s White Dirt Lane, Lee on Solent’s High Street, Romsey’s Abbotswood, Odiham’s High Street, Southampton’s Hursley Road and Four Marks’s Winchester Road.
