Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you At the end of September, my soul began to cry for attention. It wanted adventure. It declared a need to be with the stars, the sun and the earth. It craved disengagement from habitual living. It wanted to know it was being heard and that I was willing to respect its desires as much as the wishes of my ego and other people. On a rational level this call seemed frivolous, so I resisted it. Additionally, it wasn’t clear what I was actually being asked to do. My head wanted specifics and reason, and in their absence it didn’t know if I could follow through. After some time, however, it became clear that to continue suppressing this soul’s appeal would be detrimental to my health, happiness and attitude towards life. So, I began to listen and felt it was time for a solo journey. While the idea was forming I didn’t talk much about it, lest anyone persuade me of what I was already suspicious—that it was an irresponsible, crackpot idea and would lead to my complete demise. In retrospect, it is that idea which seems like the crackpot one. My first instinct was to travel north, to go to the mountains of the Adirondacks. Yet, when I realized it would be October, the idea of sleeping outdoors up north lost it’s appeal. As it was, I missed the warmth of the summer sun in September. So, I switched directions towards the south, and a trip began to design itself. When seeking specifics on where to go, what to plan, or the outcome of this adventure, my soul would shout “Just GO!” The simplicity of ‘just going’ appealed to a deep part of me. Yet, my conditioned self was having a difficult time comprehending why we couldn’t know more before leaving. Mostly because not knowing made it complicated to explain to others. For this reason, only those closest to me heard about it, some of whom wanted more explanation than what I was able to give. Although it was a challenge to disappoint them, I stuck with my call and set off on a mostly unplanned road trip. During which, I slept out under the stars, followed the movement of each moment, experienced new places, thought new thoughts and listened to the voice which speaks only in silence. My soul was happy. What does your soul ask for? Do you listen, then follow what you hear? Often, the call is small—a desire to draw, to sing or to do absoultely nothing. The size of the request is not important, it’s the follow through which makes a big impression on our inner lives. The information age has given us a huge amount of technological advances. May we also remember that which existed before those developments—soul, spirit, earth, stars, and most of all love. In peace and awe,

Community Local Author To Discuss her book “Original I Ching: an Authentic Translation Based on Recent Discoveries” Monday, March 12, 1 pm, at the Saratoga Springs public library: Margaret J Pearson, professor emerita of Chinese History at Skidmore College, and the first woman scholar to translate the core text of the Book of Changes (I ching, Yijing, Zhouyi), will discuss her book, the Original I Ching: an Authentic Translation Based on Recent Discoveries.” (tuttle, 2011). Professor Pearson worked fourteen years, mostly on sabbaticals at Cambridge University, to produce this fresh version separating the oldest text of this classic from later commentaries’ fallacies.

Margaret will discuss ways in which modern seekers can use the book most effectively. She has taught the text and its relevance to modern issues for over thirty years, at Skidmore College and the New School for Social Research in Manhattan. Other scholars have said of her work: “Margaret Pearson provides a delightful and scholarly translation of what may be the oldest self help book. In her hands, the original I Ching, or the Book of Changes, reveals a culture as richly relevant to us as are the cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome. Pithy, wise, and ever sensitive to context, the Book of Changes, in Pearson's translation, provides a new lens through which we can see the freshness of old things.” —Terri Apter, Newnham College, Cambridge, author of the Myth of Maturity. “The Book of Changes has been translated into English a number of times, but Margaret Pearson*s new translation stands out for its fidelity to the oldest and deepest layer of the text, cutting through centuries of later commentary. Her lucid explanations of the hexagram texts will be of great service to those who seek to use this ancient compendium of wisdom as a guide to introspection and self-cultivation in our own time.” —John S. Major, independent scholar, former professor of East Asian history at Dartmouth College, and translator of the Huainanzi

Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network Upcoming Programs The Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network, or SIMEN, has an upcoming program scheduled for Thursday, March 29 at 6:30pm at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry St., in the Community Room. The program is free and open to the public. The name of the program is, “You’re Having Your Baby Where? Exploring Your Options for Homebirth.” Homebirth has become a much more acceptable and much more available option for families who are looking for a completely natural, safe and satisfying alternative to the medical management model of maternity care offered by most obstetric and midwifery practices in hospitals today. Decades of research examining and supporting the safety and the efficacy of out-of-hospital birth provides the scientific evidence which well-informed families have sought to justify their decision to birth their babies at home. Personal and anecdotal experiences from scores of families in the area who have birthed at home make this option even more popular than it has been for the past 35 years. And the availability of licensed, primary-care, homebirth providers who have legal recognition, prescriptive privileges and the ability to bill insurance companies for their services make homebirth a growing choice for women and their partners as they decide where and with whom to birth their babies.

New Yoga Program Shows How You Can Turn Stress Into Bliss Whether stress comes from work, family, health or circumstance, the results are the same: less enjoyment and more tension. We now know that many health conditions are stress-related such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), heart disease, cancer, asthma, addictive behavior, chronic pain syndrome, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Based on the work of yoga therapy pioneer Michael Lee, a new program that combines yoga, mindfulness, and dialog is coming to Glens Falls. For eight weeks starting March 31st at The Lemon Tree Yoga and Healing Arts Studio, local expert, Tobey Gifford will lead participants step-by-step through a process that will help them look at their stress and find strategies and methods to reduce and even turn their stress in to bliss! “This program is for everyone,” says Tobey Gifford. “Whether you’re a yoga expert or have never tried it before, you can experience relief from stress. The classes are designed to suit all people regardless of physical condition or age.” The program uses both Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy and the practice of mindfulness to help participants identify the sources of the stress underlying their condition. Along with guided yoga and meditation experiences, participants also engage in group discussion and personal self-observation along with structured homework exercises. Tobey Gifford E-RYT500 is a certified yoga teacher and therapist with Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy. She has been teaching in the area for the past 20 years and enjoys sharing yoga with people of all ages and abilities. Plan

First of all, plan SMART. Take a current goal and apply the following: pecifically Defined: State exactly what it is that you want in a way that is clear, concise and understandable. easurable: Objectively quantify your goal in a way that will be unmistakable when you’ve reached it. chievable: Your goal must be within your control and not depend on another person, divine intervention or good luck! (Don’t discount any of these factors, but your initial intent must depend on you as the main catalyst, then apply the rest!) ealistic: Is this a fantasy? Just a slim possibility? Make sure your goal is realistic so that you have a high probability of being successful. imeline: Your success depends on having a starting date and date you expect to achieve your goal, otherwise you may be tempted to procrastinate.

SMARTR

by Cate LaBarre few days before New Year’s Eve, I happened to be tuned in to a call-in segment asking callers to share their New Year’s Resolutions. I was amazed to hear that aside from one person, everyone who shared claimed to have given up making resolutions. One man was so disgusted with his inability to make positive change in his life that he resolved to “exercise less and sit on the couch more” to be ensured of success. Through the laughter I could hear his frustration and disappointment. At about the same time I sent out an E-newsletter invitation to a free teleconference workshop on how to make resolutions that stick. I had an interesting variety of responses, from those eager to participate to several who defensively claimed that resolutions were useless and prevented them from “living in the moment”.

A

It’s understandable that our beliefs can become jaded by our experiences and we just give up. It need not be this way. You can create successful resolutions, goals and plans with just a few tools.

This is your foundation. Now as you look at what you have so far, take a moment and ask yourself, “What thought or belief that would sabotage me?” When you hear what that is, acknowledge it and ask yourself if you are willing to give it up and replace that belief with an empowering belief. If you have trouble finding one, look back at your accomplishments, times that you were successful because you believed in yourself and your goal. Use these as examples of how empowered and capable you really are. Now you need a plan to accomplish your goal. Your plan is a clear structure for you to follow that has step-by-step actions, resources, skills and support necessary for completion. Here’s an example. Let’s say your resolution or goal is to “get healthy in 2012”. This is an intention or desire; as stated there is nothing clear and no plan of action. Get specific: Clearly define what “healthy” mean

“There is no better way to enjoy living each day to the fullest than to have the clarity, certainty and freedom that a clear goal and plan provides.” to you. Measure it: What measurement will let you know that you are healthier? Yes, hopefully you’ll feel better, what else? Decrease in weight? Lower blood pressure or cholesterol? Increased physical stamina? What will help you measure your success? Achievable: Is your health goal within your control? (We’ll talk about support later.) Realistic: Is your health goal realistic given your present circumstances? Timeline: When will you start and when you want to reach your health goal? Once you can answer these questions you’ve got a good start to create a successful plan to achieve your goal. Your Plan: All goals need a plan of action. Create a structure to carry out your plan, being sure that it meets the SMART criteria AND:  Structure – Consider the exact steps and actions that will be required for your goal. Identify skills you already have that will serve you.  Support - Determine if you need additional support and decide what people, training, resources, specialists or group can provide that support.  Accountability – This goes along with support. Who can you ask to be your accountability buddy to remind you of your commitments? Make sure you choose someone you can count on to be ruthless!  Flexibility – Your plan must contain some flexibility for unexpected events. (I know you’ve heard the John Lennon quote: “Life happens while you’re making plans.” Believe it, but don’t use it as an excuse to not move forward.)  Milestones – Milestones are mini-goals that you set along the way to your larger goal. Reaching milestones will let you know that you are on your path to success.  Rewards – Create rewards as you reach milestones. Take the time to acknowledge your hard work and success. This will fuel you along the way!

 Discipline – I know, you hate this one, but I promise you that discipline is your ally. It is your ticket to freedom and a characteristic you need to develop to create the life of your dreams. Without discipline your structure is useless.  Certainty – Discipline creates certainty. This is your plan of action and you said you’d do it, so you will! Wake up in the morning and consult your plan, not your chattering mind that is already thinking of a list of excuses!  Freedom – When you follow your plan you are gifted with freedom. It is one of the most amazing paradoxes of life. What appears to restrict you becomes your ticket to freedom. You will get where you want to go and have more time and energy for other creative pursuits and lots of fun! There is no better way to enjoy living each day to the fullest than to have the clarity, certainty and freedom that a clear goal and plan provides. Support for

You in a Toxic World T

by Sarah LoBisco, ND he fact is, we can’t get away from our toxic environment! Approximately 100,000+ chemicals are used in commercial industry today with about 25,000 (25%) being reported as hazardous to human health. The CDC’s Fourth National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals of 2010 was a 529 page “summary” of how different aspects of environmental chemicals can harm us. The average volunteer of this study had over 200 chemicals, 75 of which had never been seen in prior studies, in their blood and urine samples! Here’s some more scary thoughts: the average woman has exposed herself to over 129 chemicals prior to leaving her house? These chemicals are found in her makeup, hair products, and other personal care items. Furthermore, if this same mom is nursing a child, she releases 20% of the toxic load into the baby! I recently completed an advanced practice module on detoxification and biotransformation through the Institute of Functional Medicine in Arizona. Whew…that was a whirlwind of a trip….so much to know about safely cleansing and detoxifying in such a toxic and chemicalized world! I wanted to provide everyone with a little taste of what I learned. I can’t put all 34 pages of notes I took from the 1000 + PP presentation slides, but would you really want to read all that anyway? So, what I decided to do in this article is to give some pertinent information on how to empower yourself in a world that is full of toxic insults.

From the first paragraph, you probably realize the importance of using organic personal care products as one way to decrease negative environmental exposure. If you are interested in learning more, you can access the Environmental Working Group’s Cosmetic Database to find safer products to use (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/). Protecting yourself by first not placing more chemicals on your body than necessary is important, but the focus of this article is starting with the foundation of protection—through your mouth.

DO you Know What Is in Your FOOD?

In Arizona, one of the major learning points that was drilled into our eager doctor brains is to always start with the foundation of health, FOOD! We can’t control our environment, but we can control what we put in our mouth. Food is information, not just calories. It’s comforting to know that we can eat yummy, nutritious food that not only provides potent phytochemicals to assist our detoxification systems in removing pesticides, herbicides, and other toxins, but these same foods actually help to rebuild and heal from many toxic effects.

A big obstacle to a healthy diet is society’s mass marketing that encourages choosing to put food quality at the bottom of our priority list. We are lured to spend money on eating poor quality, nutrient depleted foods, rather than on investing in foods that will heal our bodies. Let me give you some information about why the public may want to reconsider their options. Ronnie Cummins from OCA explains: “Food Democracy or Corporatocracy? Did you ever vote to allow corporate agribusiness to spray a billion pounds of toxic pesticides, and dump 24 billion pounds of climate-destabilizing chemical fertilizers on U.S. crops and farmlands every year? Did you give the OK for factory farms, so-called Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), to feed billions of hapless creatures massive amounts of genetically engineered grain, antibiotics, hormones, steroids, blood, manure, and slaughterhouse waste? Did you give Monsanto, Dow, and Dupont permission to “modify” so-called “conventional” supermarket, school cafeteria, and restaurant food with genetically engineered bacteria, viruses, foreign DNA, and antibiotic-resistant genes? Did you sign a permission slip for the USDA or your local school system to feed students, including your children, greasy, fatty, unhealthy, chemical food in the cafeteria?” If we intend to break the stranglehold of the corporatocracy over the economy, including what and how American farmers grow and what most people eat, it's time to stand up. If we believe that a healthy, organic, and equitable system of food and farming are essential to our health and the health of the planet, we need to think twice before we pull out our wallets at the supermarket or sit down for a meal in a restaurant or a fast food joint. Do you want to be supersized by Monsanto, Wal-Mart, or McDonald’s, and allow biotechnocrats, factory farms, and chemical food manufacturers to dictate your food choices? It’s time to vote with our food dollars at the grocery check-out aisle. It's time to rein in elected public officials who take money from corporate agribusiness and Monsanto in the voting booth. It’s time for the Great Boycott of Big Food Inc., and a culinary strike against all of their chemical, genetically engineered, sugar, and fat-laden processed foods and beverages. It’s time to put the fat cats on a diet, shrink the profits of Wall Street, and drastically reduce the collateral damage of chemical agribusiness, Big Box food stores, and billion dollar junk food restaurants. It’s time to Occupy our food chains, kitchens, lunchrooms, and school cafeterias, and transform our $30 billion local and organic food and farming system from being the niche alternative to being the norm in the nation's trillion dollar food economy.

Without Detox Power: Glutathione Example

With food quality as our foundation, the next step to preserve health is to build our bodies up to be able to handle the removal of everything that is creating symptoms in our body. Day one in Arizona started off with a blast of facts and figures, charting scientific evidence on the connection between chemicals and their contributing and causative factors to many diseases. You may ask, “why isn’t the whole world displaying symptoms then!??” Well, they probably are. They just don’t realize that their constant headaches, hot flashes, and drug sensitivities are actually from their cumulative toxic load and compromised gut and liver function…not from an ibuprofen deficiency, hormonal pill deletion, or psychosomatic issue. #60 February—March, 2012 I Healing Springs

The issue is total toxic load: TOTAL TOXIC LOAD= Total Toxic Exposure – the Ability to Mobilize, Detoxify, and Excrete Toxins. Dr. Drisko gave us examples of the many kinds of genetic susceptibilities that cause some to be hypersensitive to environmental toxicants and display various symptoms related to this toxicity more readily. In fact, just one little snip in a genetic sequence can make one person a powerful detoxifier and another predisposed to multiple chemical sensitivity. Dr. Hyman explains in patient friendly language how he assesses and modulates one of these important enzyme pathways in his patients: “Glutathione is a very simple molecule that is produced naturally all the time in your body. It is a combination of three simple building blocks of protein or amino acids — cysteine, glycine and glutamine.” The secret of its power is the sulfur (SH) chemical groups it contains. Sulfur is a sticky, smelly molecule. It acts like fly paper and all the bad things in the body stick onto it, including free radicals and toxins like mercury and other heavy metals. Normally glutathione is recycled in the body — except when the toxic load becomes too great. And that explains why we are in such trouble. In my practice, I test the genes involved in glutathione metabolism. These are the genes involved in producing enzymes that allow the body to create and recycle glutathione in the body. These genes have many names, such as GSTM1, GSTP1 and more.

Nearly all my very sick patients are missing this function. The one-third of our population that suffers from chronic disease is missing this essential gene. That includes me. These genes impaired in some people for a variety of important reasons. Humans evolved in a time before the 80,000 toxic industrial chemicals found in our environment today were introduced into the world, before electromagnetic radiation was everywhere and before we polluted our skies, lakes, rivers, oceans and teeth with mercury and lead. Phew, that’s a lot to know. That’s why it’s important to have support from a clinician who has experience in safely cleansing and how to build the body up first, if you are considering any kind of cleanse or detoxification. This is to prevent side effects and more sickness. I have seen many clients who started detoxifying too soon and experienced many issues from this.

For now, I hope I have sparked your interest in prioritizing the intake of safe, healthy foods in order to protect your special bodies every day. Here’s two more clinical pearls to wet your appetite: You need to sweat—your sweat glands are your second kidney and release toxins that other organs of excretion can’t! If you can’t sweat, you may be toxic, and if you don’t move and sweat, you aren’t mobilizing toxins for removal. CAUTION: using a sauna to mobilize toxins without proper excretory function and nutritional support can cause severe side effects! HYDRATION with lots of water is key to various functions.

1

Even bio-identical hormones can pose a problem in those with a SNP in CYP4502C (a liver enzyme that clears hormones), Glutathione, and methylation pathways, because hormonal excretion is compromised!

2012 and beyond: new and old ways of healing by Wendy Ball 012 has finally come. This time has gripped the popular imagination for so many years and now, finally, it is truly time to leave behind the old and greet the new.

2

But what does that mean? We talk about moving beyond self and embracing unity. Yet we know that dis-ease at the collective level begins with the wounding of individuals. We know that we inherit the wounds of our parents. As they act out the pain of their childhood experiences in addictions, emotional neglect, and other negative patterns we in turn develop unhealthy patterns of living and coping. (For powerful reading on this topic read Alice Miller’s “The Drama of the Gifted Child,” or “For Your Own Good.”) We are always searching for the newest most powerful treatment, informed by the most recent discoveries of Science. One of the most powerful contributions of Science informing therapy in recent years is the concept of neuroplasticity. We now know that we can improve actual performance by imagining in detail and with focused attention the thing we want to do. We have found that we can fill devel-

opmental gaps and heal the effects of early neglect by imagining what was needed, in detail, as if it is happening now. It is a curious thing that memory and imagination carry the same power to activate our systems of response, i.e. fight, flight, numbing, social engagement, as do our perceptions of current reality. Someone fails to respond to us and painful memory is activated along with a response of anger or withdrawal. Imagine your favorite food and your mouth begins to water. We are learning that we can alter our emotional state along with our physical level of stress by choosing to dwell on positive thoughts, memories and images. It would seem we truly can and do dream our reality. Are we coming full circle to an awareness that our shaman ancestors had? Our shaman ancestors understood the power of image and symbol. They were in intimate contact with the natural world and reflected on the distinctive qualities of animals, birds, trees, stones. They were nourished and fortified by these qualities: the high view of eagle, the endurance of hummingbird, the wily intelligence of coyote. Shaman healers aligned themselves and supported their “clients” to align themselves with spirit helpers

And they knew that healing is difficult when we are activated. They knew how to “call the jaguar down from the tree.” Using modern neurological terminology they knew how to re-set an activated nervous system and bring it from fight/flight mode to a calm safe state, capable of experiencing the nourishment of social engagement and of accessing positive resources held in the higher brain centers. (See Alberto Villoldo: “Shaman, Healer, Sage,” and “Power Up Your Brain: the Neuroscience of Enlightenment”) As a psychotherapist my respect for EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as an approach to therapy continues to grow. It is a relatively “new” approach that continues to be controversial for some even though it is one of the most researched and solidly evidence-based of methods available to us for healing the impact of trauma. I am inspired by the vibrant community of EMDR therapists who volunteer time to train those with limited resources both at home and abroad and who travel to crisis torn locations all over the planet to assist those devastated by war and natural disaster. It is both individual and global healing in action. One of EMDR’s newly developed applications regards treatment of early trauma and neglect, from conception through three years of age. As I move more deeply into practice of this special application of EMDR, I witness the power of innate intelligence to target wounding and what was missing, and the power of imagination to create what was needed. My clients report this process creates courage, self-connection, calmness, and trust in their innate emotional intelligence. This early trauma work, based on cutting edge neuroscience, draws on healing tools and strategies that our shaman healer ancestors used. For me this expresses the special vision that 2012 and the years to come represent: bridging old and new in alignment with healing values to create a human future which is individually and globally healthy. This is the future I dare to dream. Wendy Ball LMHC is a psychotherapist in private practice in Albany NY. She is certified in EMDR and Hakomi therapies. Wendy specializes in supporting healing the impact of trauma and neglect including safe and effective treatment for early and preverbal trauma.

Many Insurances Accepted

RISING STAR Healing Energy

~Awaken the best in your spirit~ Powerful remote treatments

by Kevin Hensey t is a fact that mixing cleaner chemicals are dangerous to your health. Many people are not aware of the dangers of mixing household cleaners. Some people think that mixing cleaners together will make a “super cleaner” and find themselves in the hospital.

I

There was a situation in which an unsuspecting person died. It happened at a restaurant. It was closing time and a waitress went to the restroom but she didn’t come out. Another waitress went into check on her and found her dead. After investigating the death, they found that she died from chlorine gas. What happened is that in the afternoon the kitchen floor drain was clogged. A drain cleaner which had Hydrochloric Acid was poured down the drain. The hydrochloric acid sat in the pipe chambers. That evening at closing time, the kitchen floor was mopped with bleach, which went down the same floor drain mixed with the hydrochloric acid, and created a chlorine gas that shot up through the floor drains into the restroom. How can we be safe with household cleaners that we are using daily? Well first, be aware of the cleaners you are using by taking inventory of all your cleaners that are under the sink, in the pantry and in the garage. You would be surprised how many different cleaning products you have. Next, separate them into 4 categories: all-purpose cleaners, bathroom cleaners, window cleaners, and bowl cleaners. Now choose what products you like the best and which cleaners are new or old? Many cleaners lose their strength in time. So the best idea is to keep the new and discard the old cleaning products. Word to the wise: Never put cleaning solutions in unmarked bottles. Always identify the cleaner in the bottle. If a child drinks a cleaner or sprays it in their face, it can have dangerous consequences.

Get centered in the Adirondacks!

Also, remember some products that do the same thing can be dangerous if mixed. An example of this was a family which used 2 different drain cleaners to free a clog in their sink drain. The whole family went to the hospital having a burning sensation in their eyes and throats. What happened? One drain cleaner had hydrochloric acid and the other drain cleaner had a strong alkaline (lye) base as their activating ingredients. This mixture creates an invisible suffocating gas.

What else is possible? Access Consciousness TIP by Barbra Gilman f you have a situation that isn't working or that you'd like to change with ease, here’s a magical tool to play with:

I

Simply ask… What else is possible? The infinite being you are always has access to all the possibilities that exist for you in the universe simply by expanding your awareness. The easiest way to accomplish that is to ask the universe a question! You know, “Ask and you shall receive?” – it’s one of the greatest tools you have in your toolbox. A question empowers and an answer limits and dis-empowers… it stops your awareness right in its tracks! When you ask a question, the universe (just like a Jewish mother) will do everything in its power to gift you what your heart desires, or something better! Although it might seem too simple, please do not go into judgment and throw the baby out with the bathwater! Try it for a week and I promise you will be amazed at the

results… money-back guarantee! Just keep asking, “What else is possible?” and every time you ask you will create a different possibility to show up in your world. It might not be exactly what you asked for, however it will be a greater possibility. My point of view is that the universe always knows best! by Richard E. Madden ubbed the most beautiful floatation tank in the world, New York’s first Tranquility Tank restfully resides just south of the Capital Region in historic Catskill, NY. It is here in the legendary land of Rip Van Winkle that seekers are renting this powerful human potential tool to explore their inner selves and pursue profound relaxation and well-being.

D

It was his quest to understand the mind-brain paradox that led Dr. John C. Lilly, an NIMH neuroscientist in 1954, to create the first sensory deprivation/isolation/saltwater floatation chamber before re-directing his research efforts toward the study of dolphin communication. In the early days of floating considerable misinformation was promulgated throughout the popular culture, and movies like “Altered States” presented scary claustrophobic and hallucinatory scenarios to the public. This writer’s own reaction was “you won’t get me into that thing.” Now, thirty years later, I find myself longing for my next float and not wanting to get out of the tank when the float session is over. Since “floating” or “floatation” tends to free the mind by drastically reducing sensory input to the brain, it has been re-named for scientific research purposes as REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique). Although the beautiful Tranquility Tank of today bears little resemblance to Dr. Lilly’s coffin-like box in form, in function it is virtually the same. The floater showers just before a float session to help maintain the pristine water conditions inside the tank even though the highly-saturated Epsom salts solution (several times the buoyancy of the Dead Sea) is automatically filtered and chlorinated. Epsom salts is rich in minerals for healthy skin and hair plus supplying magnesium for nervous system function and sulphates for the body. The Tranquility Tank door opens automatically to beckon the next floater entrance into the warm and womb-like environment. Floating supine like a cork on the water, the floater experiences a novel sense of weightlessness (NASA used floatation with the

20

Healing Springs I #60 February—March, 2012

astronauts). Inside air switches afford the floater total control by operating the lights and door to any degree desired. Speaking of degree, the Epsom salts solution is constantly heated to peripheral skin temperature so that the floater loses body and boundary awareness. Then, lying still in the warm, quiet darkness of the void with brainwaves, heart rate, breathing and metabolism slowing in synchrony to coherence and homeostatic equilibrium (adrenaline drop compares with biofeedback training but cortisol reduction is significantly greater), body and mind are ready to experience profound relaxation. When the hour-long float session is over, the light gently fades on followed by the automatic opening of the door. A second shower to rinse off the light crystalline coating of Epsom salts precedes getting dressed and then enjoying a refreshing beverage while languishing in the endorphin-rich afterglow of floatation. Often floaters will reflect on their float or recount the “cool” things they experienced. Floating lets your mind wonder. This writer has advanced training in cognitive-behavioral therapy, hypnosis, meditation, autogenics, biofeedback and sleep counseling. These evidence-based modalities are generally regarded by behavioral medicine to be the kings of the psychophysiological hill for the effective treatment of stress and stress-related disorders. It is apparent to me after 35 years of clinical practice, however, that no existing modality is as powerful and promising for the enhancement of human mental, emotional, spiritual and physical potential and well-being as is floatation. My dream of bringing floating to upstate New York has finally been realized with the recent opening of Float-Well in Catskill— just a mile from the Catskill Exit 21 of the NYS Thruway and a beautiful drive from anywhere.

P

One of the hardest parts of facing the end of your life that you might not have expected, is what is called the “Greek Chorus.” These are the people around you; spouses, children, friends, even your doctors; giving you their opinions. Their advice is often based on fear. Fear of losing you and the subsequent pain they’ll have to go through. If they are deeply invested in your life then you owe it to them to listen and be considerate, but remember; it’s your life, it’s your death; you get to make the call.

I

Ultimately, you are going to have to listen to your instincts, do what you think is best and live with the consequences of your decisions. One thing I can tell you is that there are always options. We have a beautiful system called Hospice that can help with this sort of thing. You might want to start there. Natural alternatives are an option and you can find tons of material from those who skipped conventional treatment and are still alive to talk about it. You can start at curezone.com as a place for cancer options with support groups to share information with.

Ask the ractitioner

’ve been diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and my doctors have given me six months to live, even with treatment. I’m trying to decide whether or not to do therapy. It will be debilitating and the only expectation is of slowing down the cancer. I’m not sure if I want to live the last days of my life like that and I’m looking for other opinions.

Oriental Medicine; Gregg St Clair My father-in-law is going through the same thing right now. He’s been diagnosed with Leukemia and his doctor gave him about six months to live with treatment. An option was stem cell therapy and bone marrow transplants, but he would have to live in a hospital for four month, he would have no immune system or quality of life, and there is no guarantee it would work. How does one make a decision like that? Darned if I know; that is a completely personal mattered based on your quality of life, age, belief structure and fears. I’ve seen people go through the treatments and die; I’ve seen people forego the treatments and die.

the

I know what I would do first (depending on the type of cancer) before trying chemo or radiation; a 30 day cleanse and juice fast, and then I would see how I was doing before making further decisions. One of the most famous herbalists of the 20th century, Dr. Christopher said, “Red Clover is the cure for cancer,” and allegedly the actor Jason Winters cured himself drinking gallons of it a day. I can tell you for sure if you talk to your doctor about any natural options they will most probably say don’t do them. Medical doctors are not trained in them, they don’t know what they will do and they feel it distracts you from what they think is best; medical treatment.

518 374-5492 www.jeromepindell.com When you get to this stage of your life, you need to become your own advocate. You need to get as much information as possible and then start acting. No one will pay attention to your case as well as you, how could they? As far as my father-in-law is concerned, he didn’t like his doctor and went to another doctor. This doctor told him he could live for years. I had one patient with the same type of leukemia who was given six weeks to live when I first saw him. He ended up living five years. My friend’s uncle, same thing, was given six weeks, lived 32 years. Beware of the Greek Chorus. Gregg St Clair can be reached at 518-383-1230 or visit www.stclairfamilyhealth.com

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell Many have either had or known someone who has faced this question. The first question that I would want to answer for myself is: what quality of this final time in my journey through this life do I want to experience? As a practitioner and advocate of alternative methods of healing for over 40 years, it is easy for me to say that I would stick to my beliefs and pursue the supportive or palliative methods with which I am familiar to manage whatever I faced in the coming months. Easier said than done! As one of my teachers of homeopathy said many years ago when speaking on the treatment of a client facing the cancer diagnosis, treat the diagnosis first, then the disease. The fear is the largest single obstacle to cure that I know. As a strong advocate of looking deeply into the fullness of any experience, the self inquiry that we often refer to as the spiritual, would be my first step. Every moment is a gift for the sacred journey that we call life. The physical is just one manifestation of this journey. Part of this journey also includes the relationships we have with the people that are going to share this journey. They have agendas and fears, and projections that may attempt to influence the choice toward which we gravitate. As one of my teachers said: the presentiment of death marvelously focuses the mind. Use that to find your path.

Sometimes I have seen the choice to pursue chemo and western approaches to be of benefit to the person, but it was also coupled with a deep connection to their own belief in their spiritual identity, and they added that to their process. We are after all more than this, or that. They needed to experience their physical reality in a way that led them through a journey into the world of the medical interventions. I worked with those choices and gave them homeopathic remedies to alleviate side effects, did jin shin jyutsu, and they did well. Years ago, I worked with a client who had to undergo a dangerous protocol of chemotherapy, and used hypnosis to facilitate the acceptance of the intervention as a gift of grace and life giving liquid that would support her and not destroy her. She did marvelously! What would have happened had she held to the attitude that she had to ‘fight’ this, which was her attitude when she came to me? I’ll never know, but I am not an advocate of going to war with the manifestations of our body/spirit. I see more people fail with that attitude, than the ones that choose to work in harmony with the interventions that they choose. There are many paths through this journey, and I tend to advocate for the gentle approach. That usually involves finding your inner resolve to face the fears of those around you, as well as facing your own questions that arise from this new experience. Give to yourself what allows you feel that your moment to moment experiencing of life is as rich as it is meant to be. Jerome Pindell can be reached at 518-374-5492 or jp@jeromepindell.com

Chiropractor; Lynn Allison Being given a time frame for your life brings a focus that most people never get. It is a chance to stand with mind, body and spirit blended as never before. I have thought “what would I do” which is all I can offer to you. Of course, this is just a guess because we never are sure unless we are faced with the situation. There is no right or wrong decision although as a culture we seem to celebrate those who tolerate anything to gain one more moment on earth, regardless of the quality of life. That said I feel I have spent my life living well and fully. We will all die so there is no way we can avoid it. I would search deep inside myself to discover if I believed the prognosis and if I desired “fighting” it. If I felt there was more I wished to do, someone I wanted to spend a bit more time with, I would consider “fighting”. Since I live my life in the alternative medicine field, I am sure I would not do therapies that debilitated me and I would prepare to die. Craniosacral therapy, acupuncture, homeopathy and zero balancing are my therapies of choice. They help me focus on my life force and how I express it in this physical world. Metatronic Healing Multidimensional Healing

®

to Clear the Story for Expansion, Freedom & Power by Philippa Merivale with Sarah Root here are many routes to healing. Especially at this time, when we’re hurtling toward Ascension, toward the New World of post-2012—long foreseen by prophets through the Ages—and being vastly supported in our journey by forces of greater wisdom, power and love than we’ve ever known. One of these routes– at once brand new and as old as time – is a system overseen by the Being known as Metatron: it is quietly, organically sweeping the planet.

T

“No problem can be solved from the level of awareness at which it was created.” Einstein’s words have been universally quoted and re-phrased but their essence remains the same: to climb out of the life conditions we are in, we must look up not down, we must expand not contract, and not merely our ideas or beliefs, but our energies themselves. We must transcend our perceived limitations to remember who we are. Essentially, we must choose healing, or whole-ing over separation and division. Metatronic Healing is a wonderful tool for bringing this about. In early 2007, when Metatron founder Pippa Merivale was requested clairaudiently to “remove the story from the body energetically”, she was also shown graphically powerful energies and techniques to achieve this goal. This early instruction was soon followed by a promise: that “the heart center of humankind will be awakened.” In a profound sense, these two statements represent the alpha and omega of a healing method that is attracting the attention of medics, nurses and psychotherapists as well as a wide spread of healers, complementary practitioners and personal seekers in the UK and Europe – and now the USA.

personal, generational and planetary – lock us into cycles of discomfort. We are remarkably skilled at denying the link between cause (our thoughts) and effect (the conditions that show up as our lives). Most commonly, it is only when the discomfort becomes impossible to ignore that we sit up and take notice. Metatronic Healing® workshops serve as intensive personal healing events and also as educational courses for trainee therapists. The deepest gift in a workshop is contained in the transmissions of divine energy, delivered directly into the heart chakra of everyone present. From there, they travel through the spinal cord to flood the energy system. In the blissful expansion that results from this, what happens is the restoring of the matrix which underlies our physical structure, returning the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical bodies to health. The frequencies offered by Metatron fold down from the 11th dimension, through the dimensional levels to meet each of us where we are. At exactly the pace that we can handle, they change us from the inside out. As the higher frequencies of love begin their work of dissolving and displacing the lower frequencies of fear, a common response is to enter a trance-like state of deep relaxation. As old stories work their way to the surface for release, they clear a space for the more expansive energies to take up gentle, firm residence. The shifts, which may include almost anything from healing our closest relationships and deepest emotional wounds to physical healing right down to the DNA, are both immediate and ongoing: they may be subtle or dramatic, but they are deep-acting and they last. The frequencies impact positively and lovingly on those we are involved with, dead or alive. The methods of clearance and recalibration begin with the individual, but the benefits of Metatronic Healing impact also the ancestral lines, through family and community, and even the body of the planet itself.

“Removing the story” was only the beginning, but an important one, as humanity struggles to transcend the gravitational pull of all that has kept us in separation and suffering—prompted us to play small. It has to be the starting point, though, if we wish to expand, to reclaim our divinely given power, to ascend, because we are addicted to our memories, our stories. We cling to our limited versions of reality: the ego loves nothing more than a good story! My story ensures that “I” remain separate from “You”; our stories reinforce our sense of beauty or unworthiness, cleverness or poverty, professional competence or neediness, sickness, victimhood or wealth. The ego loves to tell us that our labels are us, though many of those labels are well past their ‘use-by’ date and most of them keep us out of power and certainly out of our greater truth.

In these times when all of us seem to be confronted with old blockages, while also feeling the yearning to expand and become lighter, Metatronic Healing is a perfect therapeutic tool.

Besides these defining labels, we also hold memories of trauma and abuse, neatly hidden away in our cells. Except they won’t stay hidden; they find all kinds of ways to let us know they are there, subtly reinforcing the status quo. These patterns and memories –

RoHun

Spiritual Psychotherapy

Another Word for Love! by Lisa Fraine oHun is a systematic and rapid acting spiritual psychotherapy for personal growth and transformation. It is an energy based method of healing that deeply delves within our multidimensionality to harmonize at the core of our being. RoHun exposes the negative emotional circumstances and events, the traumatic and seemingly unimportant happenings, that have tainted our perception of self, causing us to sabotage and isolate ourselves from the world or from our desires. Once these negative experiences, thoughts and feelings are exposed, we can choose to understand the resultant patterns we have created and heal on a cellular level.

R

A RoHun Therapist is considered a ‘facilitator’ or conduit for the Light and must cleanse themselves to be in their greatest awareness. As a therapist we are willing to illuminate the way so others may appreciate their own subconscious nature. Awareness is key in understanding our emotional and mental patterns if we are to break free and create our lives from a new, intentional space.

the

RoHun is often called etheric surgery as it removes layers of negativity and allows our consciousness to mature and evolve. The process is credited with healing at a cellular level. During the RoHun adventure we become familiar with the different selves that are a part of us; which teach us many lessons during our life times. Cosmic, ancestral and personal cleansing happens as a result of the RoHun process. We learn to recognize patterns of self abuse and become self aware. Ultimately, RoHun offers us the key to our own internal balance and freedom. We understand the importance of choosing the thoughts and feelings we desire to demonstrate in the world, rather than just manifesting by default. In our unawareness, most of us create our lifestyle by default. RoHun gives us a tool to co-create responsibly. Owning our responsibility for our life generates a strong sense of self esteem and a willingness to want to be in the world. Ancestral patterns of abuse are abolished, healed and brought to Light by the RoHun process, allowing our future generations joy filled opportunities. There are so many today who claim to be unhappy with their life circumstances but don’t know how to create anything different. They feel trapped, unknowing victims of their own patterns of self sabotage and self abuse. Through the RoHun process we learn the truth; our (unhealthy) thoughts and (unheard) feelings have sculpted our lives to be what they are today. If we have arrived at a place of discontent, it is either the result of our own unawareness, creating by default, of those lower feelings or by our design of choosing to be in the many expressions of lower energies of fear, that has created our perceived miserable lives. The truth is we are the ones doing it, not God, not others. We are only ‘victims’ of our own self sabotage if we choose to entertain such thoughts or ignore our feelings. Our

“Our heart is our compass and it provides wonderful guidance in our life if we are willing to stay connected to it.” heart is our compass and it provides wonderful guidance in our life if we are willing to stay connected to it. What many have forgotten is that we are magnificent creators, made in the image of God and we too are capable of creating brilliance in our lives, if we choose. Man, as God incarnate, has this wonderful option called ‘choice’. The ability to choose is a part of our Godliness and our connective ability to the Divine within each of us. Every person is a cosmos of divine creativity unto themselves and how we choose to use or not use our inspiration is in direct connection with the level of contentment we feel in our own lives. There is no one to blame, just the realization that we are responsible for the resultant creations of our consciousness. RoHun originated with the work of Dr. RoHun, a physician from the fifth dimension who works with terminally ill patients of the fourth dimension. Dr. RoHun is working with thought forms and how they affect physical illness in the body. His desire is to work with individuals on this dimension to affect our spiritual evolution. Dr. RoHun channeled the first phase of The RoHun Process to Patricia Hayes in 1982. Since that time, Patricia Hayes has founded The RoHun Institute as part of DELPHI University in McCaysville, Georgia. Currently there are just over a hundred RoHun therapists worldwide. Over the years, Patricia Hayes has devised a system of advanced therapies for individuals who are devoted to self discovery. Three level of practitioners exist in this model allowing for the personal growth and transformation. There are several processes that make up the therapies of RoHun, each with purpose towards the evolution of our thoughts and feelings. Each assists in the maturational process of our ego self. We learn about the different bodies and how they relate to the energies within each of our seven major chakras. Individuals can go to even deeper levels during Purification, Caged and other Advanced Processes. Each purifying to a profound level, building a more esoteric connection with self and affecting the attainment of self actualization. RoHun has been equated with the word ‘Love’ because the process reconnects the mind as a tool of the heart. Once we are willing and able to feel through our heart, we are really living, not just existing.

Claim Your Authentic Life While You Still Can!

by Christine Kidder read a blog yesterday morning, written by a nurse who had spent many years being with people at the end of their lives. She said the most common regret people said they had was “I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.” I find this extremely disturbing.

I

We each come into this life designed with our own particular gifts to share. We also have our lessons to learn as part of the process. These are two conflicting energies that play a big part in who we really are. The lessons or obstacles that we face are not supposed to stop us forever. They’re supposed to make us stronger, better, more mature. They’re not supposed to make us forget or deny who we are, neither for ignorant or noble reasons. I am an artist. I have always known that I need to be doing something creative, and I have been to a certain degree. I’ve also held back. I’ve hidden behind excuses and insecurities, and haven’t completely owned that part of me and it’s taken a toll. That changed for me about four years ago when I first discovered hand analysis, an incredible tool that provides great insight about who we are from the markings in our hands. I found out among other things, that creativity is part of my life purpose, according to my fingerprints. Finding this out instantly changed my perspective about myself. It didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know, but rather, validated what I felt deep down, and yet could not fully accept.

I was so impressed with this tool, I decided I had to learn to read hands. The more I learn about hand analysis, the more I understand about myself. When creativity is part of your life purpose, there are challenges that come along with it, like the paralyzing fear of rejection. In order to feel fulfilled on a soul level, the artist often needs to have an audience. So, if you are an artist who never creates and or never shows your work to anyone, you are going to spend your life in what Richard Unger, founder of the International Institute of Hand Analysis calls “the big gaping hole”, or a life without meaning. What gives life meaning is not going to be the same for everyone. You have to be true to what you came here to be and do. You have to be authentic. Understanding my life purpose was freeing, but I still wasn’t regularly allowing the artist in me to come out and play. Then I came across a message “You only have so much time. Better get out of your head, into action and do something!” So, I finally created a studio space for myself, something I’ve wanted for a long time. It was a lot of work, both physically and emotionally. But it was worth it! I am so happy and energized in my new space! I’ve been painting, and writing, and revisiting old projects and I feel like I’m more alive! What have you been putting off that you really want to do? If there’s something you really want in your life that your mind keeps harping on don’t ignore it. It’s not silly or unimportant. You probably should find a way to make it happen. Understanding the information in your hands can be a big help in validating your desires. Knowing your life purpose gives you a real sense of identity and confirms what you know about yourself but may be denying. Your life lesson is also written in your hands, and that is usually a big part of what holds you back from fully expressing your purpose. Understanding your lesson can help you break through it. Christine Kidder is an IASHA (International Association of Hand Analysis) certified hand analyst and does hand readings in person or by phone. Your Creative Purpose is her business. www.yourcreativepurpose.com (518) 421-2091

Mankind’s Oldest Remedies:

Therapeutic Essential Oils for Modern Day Maladies by: Pamela Meeker ot many people are aware that essential oils are one of mankind’s first medicines. In fact, they have been used by many cultures all around the planet for about 6,000 years. In ancient times, essential oils were considered more valuable than gold, and today, we are using modern science to rediscover these ancient treasures.

N

When I was first introduced to essential oils, I thought they were just used to make the home or office smell nice. Then I discov30 Healing Springs I #60 February—March, 2012

ered that they were much more than that; essential oils can provide toxin free, natural solutions to common maladies— free of unwanted side effects! Now, it is my passion to share the knowledge of these pure wonderful plant-based products and educate others on how to replace many dangerous, man-made “medicines” that may cause toxic side effects and imbalances throughout our bodies. How can anyone not love this concept of replacing chemicals with natural, effective alternatives? How many of us are tired of the commercials for

drugs that have at least a minute and a half of side effects at the end? I sure am! Lucky for us, therapeutic grade essential oils can be used for many different common issues, including strengthening your immune system, tick and flea prevention, sleep enhancement, weight management, various skin conditions, chronic and acute pain, stress relief, sinus and allergy relief, increasing energy, and more. The best part of incorporating the essential oils into your life is that you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to do it – it’s easy! For example, when my 88 year old mother was facing knee replacement surgery this past summer, I ran to her aid with my “first aid kit” of essential oils knowing that certain ones were great for healing and pain relief. I had her apply them to her knee as often as she needed relief. This helped her tremendously with her pain in the weeks leading up to her surgery. But, we didn’t stop there. Knowing about the risk of infections at hospitals, I had her apply a specific essential oil diluted with olive oil to her entire leg as well as the bottoms of her feet. This special oil is great at fighting off infections – even the flesh-eating, antibiotic-resistant bacteria called MRSA which is plaguing hospitals nationwide! I had her do this every day about a week before and then after her knee surgery. When the bandage was removed, she applied the pain and healing blend on and around her knee at least twice daily. When the doctor examined her, he was totally amazed by her healing and recovery. She told him how she was using the oils, and he said, “Whatever you are using, keep doing it!” Soon after, she was back to zipping around to her local clubs and meetings as her quality of life had been returned to her. The point is that we all need these ancient remedies and wisdoms. They can go hand in hand with our modern times, helping us, our families and loved ones feel better and be healthier –without unnecessary, dangerous side effects! Start the New Year off right – take charge of the health of you and your family by choosing natural, chemical-free alternatives! To learn more and to experience the oils, join us at one of our upcoming local classes: Saturday February 4th from 2-3:00pm, Thurs February 9th from 6-7:00pm, or Saturday February 18th from 2-3:00pm at KC’s Framing & Fabric, 67 Davidson Dr., in Wilton. Please RSVP in advance. For more information, to schedule a free consultation, or for a more detailed class schedule, please contact Pamela at 845-797-2935 or pamelameeker.yl@gmail.com.
