Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you This marks the 10th birthday of The Healing Springs Journal. In the first issue, the Publisher’s Corner said, “This is the beginning of a group journey. For the community it is a visit back to our roots. For me personally, it is an adventure in learning how to live life authentically.” And so it has been. As a group, we have become a community with a wealth of knowledge, while abundant with people aspiring to follow their hearts in work and play. I am unable to truly express my appreciation for this community where healing springs to life. I thank you for being an integral part as a reader, an advertiser or a writer. As for me leading an authentic life, I have come a long way. Although to see my car or office you wouldn’t know it, I was born with the perfectionist gene. I mention this because after a lifetime of seeking genuineness, I am only now recognizing the impossibility of being simultaneously perfect by human standards and authentic. The definitions of both are: “Perfect 1. conforming, absolutely to the description or definition of an ideal type.” “Authentic 1. not false or copied; genuine; real.” See the conflict? The question now is to which will I maintain an allegiance? I’ve never allowed the desire to be perfect to hold me back from trying new things. Instead, I let it stop me from becoming better at the things I start. This gene, among other things, created in me the false belief that one has to be naturally talented right from the beginning to become great at something. And that the only things worth real effort are those at which you are excellent. I totally related to a 6 year old friend when after she and I had both played my flute she asked “why are you so much better at it than me?” Although I am proficient at a variety of things, I’ve never been naturally gifted without doubt at any one activity. So my perfectionist gene has convinced me to keep seeking for that which I am. After years of searching, I have finally found that thing. It may sound cliché or trite, but that thing is MY LIFE. I am brilliant at this. What a relief it is to find ‘the thing’ while continuing to do all that I love doing—ruminating, writing, all things nature, books, music, photography, horses, dogs, birds, all animals for that matter, ancient wisdom, athletics and the list continues. I do not need to pick any one interest because they are all part of my authentic life, regardless of the truth that others may be more practiced—hence better—at them than me. Those same people are not superior at living my life, which I am flawless at—mistakes and all. Thank you again for making the Healing Spring a group journey. May we all find peace and prosperity in living our lives perfectly authentic.

Local 1st Annual Natural Family Festival to Host the Site of the International WorldRecord Setting “Great Cloth Diaper Change” On Saturday, April 21st (Earth Day weekend), the 1st Annual Natural Family Festival will host the site of an international cloth diaper changing event where families can participate in a fun-filled day of kids activities, healthy eating, seminars, shopping and an opportunity to set a world record! From 10:00am-2:00pm, families with children of all ages are invited to come play and learn about Green, Eco-friendly, Holistic and Natural Family Resources from throughout the Capital Region, Southern Vermont and Western Massachusetts. In its second year, The Great Cloth Diaper change event will take place at 12 noon and attempt to break last year’s Guinness World Record of 5,026 simultaneous cloth diapers changes. For further information about the Natural Family Festival activities and vendors and how families can participate in setting a world record, go to www.naturalfamilyfestival.com. Location of festival: Sportsplex of Halfmoon, 6 Corporate Drive, Halfmoon NY (off Exit 9W). The Natural Family Festival and “Great Cloth Diaper Change” is organized by the Holistic Moms Network (holisticmoms.org) & Jessica Davis MD, Sonrise Diaper Service (sonrisediaperservice.com) and Earthy Crunchy Momma (earthycrunchymomma.com). The Natural Family Festival and The Great Cloth Diaper Change event was created by three working mothers who are passionate about the well-being of their families and how their lifestyle choices
affect the earth and the environment their children grow up in. Their goal is to raise awareness about local Natural Family Resources and the usability and ease of cloth diapering so that families can make more informed choices about caring for each other and the planet. “Each year billions of disposable diapers enter landfills where it takes hundreds of years for them to decompose, if ever,” says Heather McNamara, Executive Director of the Real Diaper Association. “Building off the success of last year’s event with 127 locations in five countries, we hope to show the entire world that cloth diapers are a real option for today's modern families who may be seeking more planet-friendly and affordable alternative to disposable diapers.”

Let us explain what Nutrition Response Testing is so that you may understand the type of testing we do in our office and consider this for yourselves. Each organ of the body is in charge of utilizing, absorbing and distributing certain vitamins and minerals. If there is a stress to that organ and it is not functioning properly, then the nutrition is not being correctly utilized, distributed or absorbed. Over time this sets up the scenario of a deficiency. With Nutrition Response Testing, we are able to test the body using acupuncture points that pertain to specific organs within, to determine what area of the body is being affected. Based on the fact and knowledge of what nutrition each organ is responsible for, it allows us to easily pull the nutrition to see what the body is actually in need of. We conduct FREE information workshops in our office. We can also do presentations at your place of business with health topics of your choice. Our mission is to help as many people safely and naturally without drugs and surgery to get as healthy as possible. This is our way of sharing with you an exciting and safe way of handling any health issues within the body. Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network Upcoming Programs The Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network, or SIMEN, has two upcoming programs scheduled. Both will occur at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry St., in the Community Room, and are free and open to the public. The first program occurs on Thurs., April 19 at 6:30 pm, and is entitled, “Consciousness and Intention: Discoveries in Research and What They Mean to You.” Often the moment after we accept the paradigm that our thoughts influence our reality we become flooded with questions. “How do I think then?” “Will my negative thoughts start manifesting?” “Is this a positive thought…or is that a positive thought?” “Should I think this way…or that way?” Some answers to this barrage of questions can often be found in the latest discoveries of Intentional research. In this talk, Biofeedback Specialist Bethany Gonyea will be sharing some of the most exciting findings in current intentional research, and what they reveal about how our intentions influence the world around us. She is going to invite us to become our own scientific researchers so that we can add to this body of knowledge through a four county-wide research study in the greater Albany area being conducted under the direction of SUNY Albany Professor Dr. John Foldy. She will also briefly discuss how experience matters and training our nervous systems to be used as an elegant “intentional accountability biofeedback instrument” dramatically accelerates our progress. The second program occurs on Thurs., May 17 at 6:30, and is entitled “Access Consciousness: The Source for Ultimate Change.” This program, presented by author and therapist/coach Barbra Gilman, answers the question, “What would it be like to be free of the limitations of the past and have access to infinite possibilities for more in life?” Access Consciousness is a set of simple and amazing tools, techniques and philosophies that you can start to use immediately, that allow you to create dynamic change in every area of your life, with your body and with you. The target of Access is to empower you to know that you already know everything, including how to shift anything in your life or body that does not work for you. It is through you becoming more conscious of what choices and possibilities you have available, that allow you to choose and generate everything you desire in life greater than what you currently have, and more than what you can imagine. For more information on either program, call 210-1557.

RESEARCH STUDY A by Bethany Gonyea new website has been created to help collect volunteers needed for the Greater Albany Meditation Project (GAMP). Participants are being asked to commit to meditating 15 minutes a day for two months, while they send positive intentions for these regions while certain social indicators are measured. The goal is to have 1% of Schenectady, Saratoga and Rensselaer counties, about 8600 people, to help make history by adding to an important body of intentional research that suggests how we focus our intentions can influence what we experience. The researchers, SUNY Professor, Dr. John Foldy, and biofeedback specialist, Bethany Gonyea, MS, are drawing some of their inspiration for their research protocol from the Maharishi Foundation, which has performed multiple studies published in peer reviewed journals that suggest when a relatively small amount of people meditate, there is a positive effect on the entire population. They are also gaining inspiration by following the lead of Lynn Mctaggert, author of The Intention Experiment, who led the landmark 2008 Peace Experiment, where people from 65 countries sent peaceful intentions for 15 minutes a day for one week to the civil war-torn territories of northeastern territories of Sri Lanka. During the days following the study, deaths decreased by 75% and attacks decreased by 44% and the twentyfive year civil war was declared finally over four months later.
The Greater Albany Meditation Project will add to this body of research by being the first study of it’s kind where people meditate with the goal of sending peaceful intentions to their local geographic area (as opposed to just being focused on their personal internal environment or to an external distant country). Foldy and Gonyea are asking for 1% of Rensselaer, Schenectady, Albany, and Saratoga counties to get involved by signing up to be meditation research volunteers. To help achieve that goal, a new website has been set up to recruit volunteers and to help answer people’s questions about the study. The new site will have video blogs that will update people on the progress of the study, free audio download meditations that are often based on the latest in intentional research, and a recruiter tab to help volunteers spread the word as well. “This is a team effort” says Bethany Gonyea, “ We have a wonderful inspiring group of people working behind the scenes to help spread the word and give their ideas and talents, but we could always use more. There is much to be done! We need many people to carry this project in their hearts for it to be successful.” On their wish list are volunteer recruiters, videographers, marketers, researchers. There are two tentative dates for the study to start are, September 2012, or January 2013, depending on volunteer enrollment. The new website can be found at www.bethechangemeditation.net #61 April—May, 2012 I Healing Springs 11

What If…. A
by Penelope Jewell friend of mine had a dream. Three sisters stood on a hill. And as happens with sisters, they grew impatient with each other, and argued and fought. When the pain of being together became too much to bear they shot off into different parts of the Universe - exhilarating freedom. Then, loneliness and despair. When the pain of being separate became too much to bear, they were drawn back together, on the top of that hill, again and again, no matter where they went. Finally, it occurred to them that something was happening far deeper and far beyond the emotions that seemed to propel them – far beyond the insistent gravitational pull to come together, or the absolute need to separate again. When perceived from a distance, their movements created a dance – they were stars, and the dance they created was an integral part of the pattern of the Cosmos. What if… nothing, no one is really separate What if… from our innate atomic structure to our individual consciousness we are part of a living, ever-changing, completely interwoven, ever-sustaining vibrational Life Force. What if… we choose the general framework of our lives before we come into this physical realm. And then, like living in an astrological chart drawn at the moment of our birth, we move through the framework, and yet can choose our direction at each juncture. 12 Healing Springs I #61 April—May, 2012
What if…every feeling we experience is not just an individual experience, not just meant for our own soul’s journey, but is actually some small part of everyone’s journey. What if… every feeling we experience is really our unique and individual vibrational contribution to Universal Consciousness, our own ever-changing emotions and vibrations actually an integral part of the Universal Life Force that surrounds and sustains us. What if… every situation we encounter in our lives is simply a potential, an opportunity to consciously add a particular vibration to the Universal chorus, a vibration that would affect the resonance and harmony of the whole. What if… we could choose our responses – to be angry, or not, at any given time, how to remember a person or an experience and with those choices, select the emotion and vibration we add to the whole – joining the combined vibrations of every sentient being. What if… we could move past whatever judgments we hold, move past the limitations of our scars, release or transform any emotion or vibration below those of peace or joy. What if…we could consciously choose the quality of vibration we add to our World. What if… it mattered. Penelope Jewell was the first Usui Reiki Master initiated in New York State in April 1988. The healthy lifestyle shifts mentioned above are important to modulate chronic disease patterns. Yet, I find above guidelines lacking in two ways: 1 They don’t give a complete picture of what is truly important for overall heart health. 2 True preventative medicine is not about battling the body or correcting a symptom from a pharmaceutical deficiency. It’s about supporting the body and bringing back a state of equilibrium. This is so the body can heal itself and manage the continued stresses on it with grace and ease verses through increased symptoms and pain. In Naturopathic Medicine, we call this, “gently building the vital force.” It’s not that medications aren’t sometimes necessary, but we need to look at the whole picture, especially when addressing our heart needs. My last article was about removing the obstacles to cure— supporting the livers biotransformation and cleansing capacity. For this issue, I’d like to extend February’s heart month to heart year! This is for a variety of reasons: • Conventional medicine guidelines for the heart aren’t modulating our current health concerns, especially for the heart. • The diseases of the heart are more than physical and we can no longer ignore the mind-spirit connection. • Spring fever means romance, let’s make our physical hearts capable of taking in the joy! For example, let’s look at the controversial topic between integrative and conventional medicine- cholesterol. Medical experts are touting that an important way to prevent cardiovascular disease is to take medications that stop the formation of this critical steroid manufactured in our liver. Now, from a common sense point of view, think of the implications of taking a medicine which stops the precursor to hormones and such an important vitamin. Besides the side effects of this biochemical manipulation, studies are lacking in the benefits of suppressing cholesterol in most cases and are skewed toward favorable results. We need to take into account bio-individuality and dosages of medications and supplements on an individual basis, such as gender differences. For example, most trials use men. A recent article

Healing Springs I #61 April—May, 2012
During the 3-year period of the study, 10,242 new cases were reported – a whopping 71 percent increase in risk from women who didn’t take statins. This association stayed strong at a 48 percent increased risk of getting diabetes, even after taking into account age, race/ethnicity, and weight or body mass index. These increases in disease risk were consistent for all statins on the market. This effect also occurred in those with and without heart disease. Surprisingly disease risk was worse in thin women. Minority women were also disproportionately affected. The risk of diabetes was 49 percent for white women, 57 percent for Hispanic women, and 78 percent for Asian women. Other studies have recently called into question the belief that high cholesterol levels increase your risk of heart disease as you get older. For those over 85 it turns out having high cholesterol will protect you from dying from a heart attack, and, in fact, from death from any cause. The problem with generalized recommendations is that the focus is too narrow. Still, let’s remember the individual. These drugs aren’t all bad. New studies are showing statins may provide an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect that is effective in preventing secondary heart attacks for MEN who have a history of a heart attack.
There’s more to Heart Health than Numbers! What about the mind-body connection to the heart? The heart itself has a “brain” and contains hormonal and healing effects on the whole body through specific heart hormones. Beyond numbers and weight, if one feels a sense of isolation, the effect on the physical heart is strained. In fact, isolation is THE primary predictor of all cause mortality rates! Therefore, it isn’t just a cliché; emotions play a big part in heart health! Studies are proving that you can literally have a heart attack from a broken heart. According to a study in Circulation: Acute psychological stress is associated with an abrupt increase in the risk of cardiovascular events. Intense grief in the days after the death of a significant person may trigger the onset of acute myocardial infarction (MI), but this relationship has not been systematically studied. Dr. Mercola offered some more insight on the mechanism behind this grief and heart health: The study did not get into the causes of the abrupt increase in risk of cardiovascular events like heart attack, but it’s likely related to the flood of stress hormones your body is exposed to following extreme stress. For instance, adrenaline increases your blood pressure and your heart rate, and it’s been suggested it may lead to narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to your heart, or even bind directly to heart cells allowing large amounts of calcium to enter and render the cells temporarily unable to function properly.
Interestingly, while your risk of heart attack increases following severe stress, so does your risk of what’s known as stress cardiomyopathy — or “broken heart syndrome” — which is basically a “temporary” heart attack that occurs due to stress.
An Emotional Tip for Heart Health Therefore, think of ways to handle stress, emotions, and isolation for heart healthy tips that goes beyond a statin deficiency and medicine by the numbers. In fact, the American Heart Association recently reported how Yoga is connected to heart health: Thinking prevention? As part of an overall healthy lifestyle, Cunningham said yoga can help lower blood pressure, increase lung capacity, and improve respiratory function and heart rate, and boost circulation and muscle tone. It can also improve your overall well-being while offering strength-building benefits. Yoga also has proven benefits for those who have faced cardiac arrest, heart attack or other heart event, according to Cunningham. “The acute emotional stress of such an event certainly has a significant and adverse effect on the heart,” she said. “That’s where yoga can be a tremendous benefit to manage the stress.”
Measuring Your Risk Factors:
1
Get the right cholesterol tests. Check NMR particle sizes for cholesterol by asking your doctor for this test at Labcorp or LipoScience. You want to know if you have safe light and fluffy cholesterol particles, or small dense, artery damaging cholesterol particles. A regular cholesterol test won’t tell you this. Check for metabolic syndrome. Do you have a fat belly? Measure you waist at the belly button and your hips at the widest point—if your waist/hip is greater than 0.8 if you are a woman or 0.9 if you are man, then you have a problem. If you have small LDL and HDL particles, you have metabolic syndrome. If your triglycerides are greater than 100 and your HDL is less than 50, or the ratio of triglycerides to HDL is greater than 4, then you have metabolic syndrome. Do a glucose insulin challenge test.

Check your hemoglobin A1c, which measures blood sugar over the last 6 weeks. If it is greater than 5.5, you may have metabolic syndrome It’s important to look at the whole picture and whole heart. Who’s Really
in Charge?
by Avis A. Burnett, PhD ecently, I’ve been drawn to many books which address a topic I’d long thought of as hohum: the Unconscious. (Sigh) I was studying about that way back in college when I was a psych major. Alas, the Unconscious keeps coming to my attention, along with a new way of relating to it.
R
Here are a few tidbits that I’ve been learning. Our lives - the very worlds we live in - are created in the Unconscious (by definition, below our awareness). We’d love to think that our Left Brain / Conscious Minds are the rational, functional show-runners... but that’s simply not accurate. Where we truly make decisions (especially about such things as what to love, whom to trust, whom to marry, what and whom to distrust) is in the Unconscious. David Brooks (The Social Animal) states that we are living in a Revolution of Consciousness. What does that mean? To me, it’s an opportunity to invite the Unconscious (the unknown) to become known. When that happens, we may live in choice rather than Unconscious reaction. I’ve enjoyed exploring the differences between the Conscious Mind and the Unconscious Mind. For example, the Conscious Mind holds the linear-thinking, reason- and analysis-loving,
language-oriented, rational Thinker who experiences one's Self as an individual being. This is the home of the Ego, which sees itself as a separate entity and therefore has an unquenchable thirst for status, recognition and exaltation above everyone else. Allan Hamilton (Zen Mind, Zen Horse) points out that the hallmark of humans - that of being Left-Brain dominant - came at a price. That is, to have language, we gave up our intuitive powers. Raising the function of speech to such a high level of expression, he said, required the emergence of a separate consciousness - a ‘me’ to be the inner voice. An ‘I’ was born, namely the Ego. Which has been fighting ever since to be top dog, any way it can! With that, of course, comes a feeling of isolation and aloneness. Interesting that for all its press, this Left Brain / Ego Consciousness represents only 10% of all that is going on! So what’s happening in the other 90% of our psyche, the Unconscious? Oh not much, really. Just the beliefs, cellular memories, and DNA structures, along with ancestral, familial and social patterns, that rule our lives. Just our emotions, passions, perceptions, intuitions, biases, longings, and character traits. That's all. This is the land of poetry, music, stories, myth, prayer, and ritual. This is the domain of spiritual states, the wisdom of the ages, connection with the Divine, and our creativity. This is the non-linear world of the Right Brain, capable of taking in extraordinary amounts of information which it can process 200,000 times faster than the Left Brain / Conscious Mind. And this is the realm of peace, harmony, and connection. Here, one would willingly lose one’s Self into the bliss of Something Grander. It is easy to see the struggles inherent in this set up. Perhaps it's a design to allow us to experience and experiment with Duality. Certainly, until we come to terms with the differences, we are doomed to Duel-ity: battle mode. Do we strive to be distinctive or

Are we governed by reason or do we honor feelings? Along with the philosophical issues are some very real practicalities. One of the biggest issues at this time is stress. Alexander Loyd (The Healing Code) attributes on-going tension and anxiety to destructive energy frequencies in the Unconscious. These frequencies are tied to non-conscious beliefs that we are constantly in danger. To do everything necessary to protect us, our Sympathetic Nervous System is activated which, in turn, shuts down our immune system. With our immune system disenfranchised, our cells are denied the normal input-output that promotes good health. That is, oxygen, minerals, and glucose (fuel) do not flow into the cells and toxins are not removed. With no way to grow and repair themselves, cells fill with toxins and eventually collapse into illness and disease. So what can we do? According to Gregg Braden (Deep Truth) and others, we are on the cusp of a new World Age. This is a special time when we can (he would say MUST) become aware of our old habits and mindfully start creating new ones based on peace, harmony, trust, and respect - with and for all beings with whom we share our Earth. Fortunately, there are many ways we can do that! One of the most potent is to develop a relationship with the Unconscious. To begin that process, we need merely ask for help from that great expanse of Wisdom, then pay attention to what shows up. The Universe conspires to assist us in growing more in touch with ourselves and All Things. Creative impulses flow. Important people come into our lives. Interesting information finds its way to us. Inspiration is ignited in the form of thoughts, feelings, and actions. Each and all of these experiences expand our awareness and our hearts.
We can also set out to explore the hidden treasures of our Unconscious. We can be mindful of old habits of ego, and gently change to clearer thinking. There are innumerable techniques for uncovering Unconscious beliefs, fears, memories and reactions which can free us to live in the present moment rather than the past. We can spend time in Nature, which awakens and feeds a level of consciousness we can't put into words. My favorite is to spend time with horses, which are quintessential models of Unconscious wisdom and serenity that I associate with the Divine. So what are you holding in your Unconscious? Timeless wisdom? Inherited predispositions? Past life traumas? Erroneous beliefs? Unexplored creative genius? No doubt, all of these and more. Would you like help sorting it out? I will be holding workshops to present the works of many top thinkers of our day and to teach healing techniques which access the Unconscious to transform unwanted patterns at every level - spiritual, mental, emotional and physical - into patterns of health, harmony and happiness. Many of these workshops will be held at area farms, assisted by horses. If you are reading this, I suspect that you also are committed to a mission of creating peace, harmony and joy on our planet. Thank you for your efforts! Each and every one is making a difference. Avis A. Burnett, PhD holds a doctorate in Transpersonal Psychology and brings over 20 years of experience to her work. Her passion is Transformational Counseling, using principles of quantum mechanics to bring cellular-level healing to physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual issues. Avis has studied numerous counseling and healing techniques over the years and draws from all of them in her work. Most recently inspired by Matrix Energetics, she now incorporates this modality in her sessions. SLEEP HEALTHY ON A NON-TOXIC MATTRESS by Sophie Castro & Karen Totino e hear and see so much advertising about memory foam and that it will take away your back, neck and joint pain.. Yet so many people have reported becoming sick after sleeping on their newly purchased mattress. Understanding what conventional mattresses are made of is important.
W
There are different types of mattresses available—innerspring, foam, air, water bed and fiber. Let us compare innerspring and foam mattresses, which make up the lion share’s portion of sales. Conventional innerspring mattresses have two main components: 1. A supporting core – mostly steel innersprings. 2. A padding made of polyurethane foam and/or cotton. A typical innerspring mattress contains between 250 and 1000 coil springs, foam layers and a quilted fabric cover. Manufacturers can vary the number of springs, the gauge of the coil, and they can wrap the coils as well. All of these techniques will affect how the mattress feels and its longevity. The foam is usually a polyurethane foam, a petrochemical product that generally contains a combination of raw ingredients, such as crude oil, natural gas and sodium chloride, and various chemicals. These beds are covered with a fabric made of synthetic thermoplastic fibers: polyester, nylon, and acrylic. The adhesives that hold mattresses together contain formaldehyde, a carcinogen that has also been linked to asthma and allergies. 18 Healing Springs I #61 April—May, 2012
Since July 2007 the Consumer Product Safety Commission requires that all mattresses sold in the United States be able to withstand 30 minutes of exposure to an open flame. Even though PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers) were banned in 2004, a number of chemicals proven harmful to human health are widely used in mattress manufacturing as flame retardants, such as boric acid and antimony trioxide (a carcinogen). Major manufacturers won't divulge their flame-retardant formulas, which are considered trade secrets. If you hear that a mattress has been “treated for dust mites”, it means the materials have been sprayed or were soaked in an insecticide solution. Is this toxic blend truly designed for the body’s comfort and health? Whole foam mattresses are becoming more and more popular – made with either latex or memory foam, which contain no springs and therefore no steel. Keep in mind that there are different types of latex, making a bed more or less healthy. Most of the latex used in bed production is not natural – it is a synthetic type made from two chemicals: styrene and butadiene, called styrene-butadiene rubber (used also in car tires, and shoe heels and soles.) On the other hand, natural latex is a plant-derived product, made from the rubber tree sap. Although some manufacturers mix the two in order to create a less expensive product, they are very different. The natural latex naturally repels dust mites, mold and mildew. It

The synthetic latex does not have these qualities and needs to be sprayed with pesticides. Unfortunately, manufacturers in the US are not required, unlike in Europe, to specify on labels what type of latex was used. Then there is memory foam – a visco-elastic foam that has a slightly different formula than polyurethane but is not less toxic. One of the biggest concerns with petroleum-based chemicals found in mattresses is that they are highly flammable. Once again US labeling laws do not require mattress suppliers to disclose any chemical information to the consumer. Boric acid and PBDEs are the most common flame retardants used on foam and mattress padding, and studies have shown how they can affect the respiratory system and the brain, and provoke symptoms such as nausea, headaches, skin eruptions, red and itchy eyes, etc. In addition, adhesives and solvents used to bond together mattress layers to wood frames, release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and toxic gases into the bedroom. Of course once asleep, you may no longer worry about what’s in your mattress. However, what it is made of may slowly affect your health, or the health of your newborn and children.

Why Changing Who You Hang Out With Will Change Your Life by Joëlle Lydon used to have a friend who I wouldn’t describe as completely negative … but she sure would find a lot of excuses for why her life wasn’t working out.
I
She would say that she got screwed at her job because she had the most experience. She would tell me that she couldn't get her business going because she had no time. She wanted to have a boyfriend, yet the moment the guy showed himself to be a sweetie, she would do everything to alienate and piss him off. She constantly orchestrated friends to come to her rescue. Being with her drained me. I know, we all are guilty of thinking small from time to time — regardless of how successful or rich or lucky we seem to be. The question it raises is whether being friends helps or hinders one's evolution. Why? Because who you hang out with does matter. They say you can judge a person by the friends they keep. This is true on several levels. That saying means that you can tell a lot about someone by knowing who they keep as friends. But the friends you have also shape who you are. You spend a lot of time with your friends, and you look to them for approval and support. So their influence is huge. That all sounds great, but this is a cycle of influence which can act to keep people in small unhappy lives. You choose your friends based on who you are comfortable with. They support your self-image and your values. Which is another way of saying they can prevent you from growing. Do you have friends who send you chocolate when you're on a diet? Who tell you to back away from a scary challenge - or who keep you tied into destructive habits?
A Call To Action: Here are my top tips for maximizing the benefits of your friendships:
1
Raise your awareness. Friends have a large influence on your experience of life, your views about the world and your place in it. So each time you are with friends, make time to step out of the relationship and look back into it with a critical eye. How do you feel about the company of each of your friends? Why are you still friends? Is the friendship growing or shrinking? What function does each friendship serve in your life? By growing this awareness, all kinds of positive actions will become possible for cultivating the best set of friends you could hope for, and that will make your life very significantly better.

Healing Springs I #61 April—May, 2012
Redox Signaling Molecules are naturally created within every living cell of the body. They are so essential to life that without them you would die. In fact,as we grow older we produce fewer and fewer of these molecules, resulting in a process we call aging. For the first time science has stabilized these molecules in a solution outside the body that when taken internally allow us to replenish and increase our cellular efficiency. ASEA increases ones endurance, boosts the immune system and strives to balance the body's cellular makeup. We live and die at the cellular level.
2
Have more than one. It’s not just that variety is a good thing; friendships go up and down, and if you only have one – and it’s down – you don’t have a friend! As well as that, each friendship offers you different things and with a few friends to choose from, you have rich resources at your disposal.
3
Break out of the box. Are all your mates from your schooldays? From work? From your neighbourhood or social class? Are they all of the same gender or outlook? By limiting yourself to people like you, you place yourself in a box from where you are unlikely to hear radically different views of the world, learn new techniques, or see different and perhaps better life choices in action. Variety is the spice of life, so lean outside of the box.
4
Givers and takers. Does your friend leave you feeling better or worse? Good friendships are all about mutual support and growth, but some friends are big takers – they dump their problems on you, tell you what you can’t do, play on your fears and keep you where you are. You may want to limit how often you see these friends, and so limit their drain on your own energies. Instead, find friends where the balance is more even; where mutual support and growth is the norm. Of course, taking these steps requires serious courage. Are you willing to let go of who you've known in order to open up to friendships that may be more in alignment with who you are becoming? Listen, you may find huge comfort in long-familiar, predictable and unconditionally supportive friends, and if so, you should keep at least one on your list! But it might be worth considering how adding some new and different blood into your social set might help you towards your new, happier, more authentic life. Given all of the expertise that you have in a variety of alternative fields, what would be the one (or strongest) suggestion that you would give in order to maintain health where there is no other pressing dilemma at the moment?
Massage and Healing Arts;Annette Nadeau With no pressing dilemma, maintaining balance with all aspects of life is always a good thing. All aspects of who we are need tending with gentle, compassionate understanding. Learning how to be my own best friend, establishing a quality relationship with myself is how I enjoy negotiating my way through life. Our energetic system is comprised of the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical aspects of who we are. Recognizing that these aspects of self have the potential to come together as one to work in unison with the truth of who we are. Awareness of thought, gesture and attitude is key to our ability to move forward in life. Learn to co-create with the universal constructs of life. In meditation, with the help of your imagination and breathwork, create your dreams as though they are already happening. Breath with your dreams of today, feel them in your body, allow yourself to take the logical steps necessary in order to make it all happen in this three dimensional world. Where there is fear, place it in your central channel of light, breath it through and down to the Earth Mother. Educate yourself on the matters of the unknown so that your logical steps will come clear and fear will no longer reside inside of you. Enjoy the practice!

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell As I witness the multitude of travails that present themselves in our media, everyday life outside of my office and finally within the confines of my office, I am struck by the pure lack of attention to the present moment surroundings. What a shame. We are blessed with an abundant world of opportunities, some that may cost us a small amount of money, given the larger return to our sense of well being. Some are as simple as stopping the noise of our lives for a small period of time. I see a cranio-sacral therapist every two weeks. I get a massage occasionally, 'though probably not enough. I write poetry, a recent joy to which I returned, even self publishing a small volume. I day dream, often by simply looking out of a window and letting myself watch the world fly by, figuratively as well as literally. I let go of the imperative that I need to be busy. Every task that needs completion will be accomplished without my need to worry about it. What do these things have in common? My phone is off, I am captive to the simple act of being quiet, I let go of any need to respond to the outside world, I am aware of being in my own skin. Ask yourself when the phone buzzes, rings, intrudes into your space: Do I need to answer that call, Or can it wait for later when I can be present to the whomever is at the other end of the desire to speak to me? The world will continue to move at the pace that we set for it. When you sit down to eat, turn off your phone, your TV. When you are driving, ask yourself whether conditions can allow you to talk. You can answer, take a message, and call them back in 5 minutes. Become the master of your decisions and choices, and the feeling of being centered will be with you even when you are busy and facing stress. When you do, you will also become aware of when you need to ask for assistance with an issue that is outside

Chiropractor; Lynn Allison I know it will sound trite but the best thing one can do is be happy. Find an acceptance of your life and celebrate your life. I don't mean forced bubbliness but a moment to moment appreciation of what makes you happy. It could be a pet’s antic or child's smile, the light in the trees or the sound of wind. Endorphins are released that ease pain, we breathe deeper, our nervous system shifts to rest and digest, parasympathetics. It is in that state where healing begins, regardless of the technique. Of course, eating well, exercise and fresh air are important too. THE MAGIC! by Barbra Gilman ave you ever found yourself searching for the ‘right’ answer? Then finding something that looks good and go straight to a conclusion about what will happen, becoming fixed on a certain outcome or result as the only possibility you are willing to have show up?
H
None of us have ever done that….right? (Not more than a few times a day anyway!) Did you notice that what happened next wasn’t quite what you were expecting, and definitely not what you thought you’d made yourself vibrationally compatible with? So maybe there’s something else we could play with here? When we’re vested in an outcome or coming to conclusions, we have judgments and decisions as answers to the situation we’re working on. That very process of deciding on the answer is often what creates the limitations. 24 Healing Springs I #61 April—May, 2012

he second chakra begins to mature during our adolescent years, during puberty. This is a highly emotional time for both sexes, our hormones change, and our relationships begin to transform. This is also a time when our culture begins to suppress our natural arising desire to explore not only sexually, but also creatively. While the purest of intentions seem to be protecting us, the consequence is unhealthy relationship surrounding the opposite sex, sexuality, creative expression, and restrained emotions. The “rules of society” put into place, gender roles are defined: boys don’t cry and women should dress enticingly sexy. The expectations of who we are to become are laid out before us, we begin to conform, desperately trying to fit in. Our sexual and creative energy becomes muted; manifesting into angst, frustration, depression and a division between the sexes. A healthy second chakra allows for freedom of creative expression in all forms, including sexuality. Instead of separation, there is unification between the sexes, understanding that the other sex has manifested different qualities that can help you and heal you. You are open to your talents and experience freedom to be whomever you want to be. You are comfortable with your feelings and share them with others. When making love to a partner, you use this opportunity to express your adoration, and feel the life energy flowing between you, you dissolve into this union. You live inventively and are not afraid of your imagination. You are comfortable with your body and see it as an artistic masterpiece. This feeling is observed in your body language, your posture, and your movement during dancing, lovemaking, and your daily activities. You inspire togetherness. Balancing Your 2nd Chakra - Hydration, submerging in natural water, moonlight, long relaxing warm baths, flowing music or music with water sounds, orange foods, wear orange, moonstone and orange stones, ylang ylang and sandalwood, meditation on yin yang, dancing, forgive the opposite sex, express yourself creatively and emotionally, side stretch, pelvic rotation, alternate nostril breathing, head to knee pose, wide leg forward bend, half moon, half locust, locust, cobra, pigeon. by Evan Lawrence here’s a persistent myth that once upon a time, our ancestors ate healthy, locally-grown and organic food. They did just fine—after all, they lived long enough to produce us— and if we go back to eating a healthy diet like them, we won’t need supplements.
T
Science and history don’t support this myth of some past nutritional golden age. Archeological remains suggest that the average life expectancy from the Paleolithic right into the mid-17th century was only 25 to 30 years. This was partly due to ferociously high child mortality rates, which could have had as much to do with poor nutrition as poor sanitation and medical ignorance.

There may have been a few happy places and times where everyone had enough to eat of the right foods year-round, but they must have been rare. Not all soils and climates are equally fertile. Soil depletion from over-farming is a very ancient problem. Some farmers were better than others at producing a crop, which directly affected the health of their families and communities. Local food supplies were rarely more than one crop failure away from famine. Most people ate what was available, which wasn’t necessarily what was best for them. The white potato, for example, scorned by some nutritionists for its high glycemic index, nourished generations of Andean natives and Irish who couldn’t grow much else in their cool climate and poor soils. Food preservation methods tended to destroy many nutrients, leaving bulk but not much else. Wealthy people chose delicacies that tasted good and that would attest to their high status—again, not necessarily healthy. According to anthropologists who study historical human remains in Europe, the skeletons of even those considered well-to-do could show signs of malnutrition. For example, British and American colonists of the 18th century who could afford it ate a diet heavy in fatty meats and bread, washed down with copious quantities of alcohol. Fruits and vegetables were side dishes, flavorings and garnishes, or ingredients for alcoholic beverages. Not surprisingly, documents and pictures Healing Springs I #61 April—May, 2012
of the time suggest that the upper classes suffered from obesity, heart disease, stroke (called apoplexy then), and gout. But the average life expectancy was still only about 50, so many people didn’t live long enough for their poor diets to catch up with them. Theories about what we should or shouldn’t eat have been around for as long as people have been able to wonder about the connection between food and health, but the science of nutrition had to wait until scientists had learned enough chemistry and physiology to isolate components of food and determine what they did in the body. Vitamins were not discovered until the early 20th century! Thanks to continuous advances, we have a better understanding now than at any time in history of what nutrients we need and why. This understanding continues to evolve. New compounds are still being discovered. Research has established that the optimum intake of some nutrients is higher than we could hope to achieve only by eating the foods that contain them. Why would Mother Nature set us up this way? The answer is that Mother Nature doesn’t want us to stick around. We’re supposed to make babies, raise them to the point where they can make babies of their own, and get out to make room for the next generation. Modern medicine has raised our life expectancy to close to 80 years in the U.S. We’re living long enough to develop degenerative diseases that few of our ancestors—the ones who died in their 20s in childbirth, of infectious diseases, or of traumatic injuries-- had to face. And these diseases—heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and others—are expensive to treat! Doesn’t it make sense to give our bodies the best nutrition we can, so that we can stay healthy and active for as long as possible? Isn’t eating a balanced diet enough, as some doctors and nutritionists contend? Because of individual variation, a balanced diet for one person may not be balanced for someone else. People whose work or way of life is physically strenuous, stressful, or exposes them to toxins, who are recovering from illness or injury, or who are chronically ill may need more nutrients and in different proportions than people who don’t have such demands. And how many of us eat all the daily servings of fruits and vegetables that the current dietary guidelines recommend? In that light, supplementation is good nutritional insurance. When looking for a brand of supplements, ask: Does the manufacturer do clinical studies on its ingredients and products? Is the product free of artificial sweeteners, flavors, and preservatives? How many tests does the company do on ingredients and products to ensure safety and quality? Does it offer an unconditional money-back guarantee? The nutritional gold age isn’t some time in the past, it’s now! Take advantage of what we’ve learned and promote your good health by adding high-quality supplements to your diet. You’ll feel the difference! Locating The Source by Mark Verner Frederick itting before the flames that dance upon stages of beech and cherry in our wood stove, I revel in my morning – my time to Be. The silence is refreshing and the stillness penetrates to my very core. The light of the new day transforms the dark shadows outside my windows into trees and bushes…and while my wife sleeps, I put on a warm coat and walk out the door…following my intuition.
S
I walk through the back yard and cross over, onto the path above the stream that requires no name. But, I don’t get very far… As I enter the wooded path, the stream crawls up the bank and into me…and I stop and just soak in its mettle. I become my favorite song …the sound of water pushing rocks that refuse to move; the harmony of effortlessly finding a way around or over every obstacle…the very essence of flow. And for a time, I just stand there with my eyes closed…floating downstream…letting go. And while standing there, my mind takes me on a virtual journey to the gorge and the tall white pines and hemlocks that guard its mystery…and I find myself standing above a new-found spring that pours crystal clear messages from The Source of all that is.
I am reliving the story of last week’s visit to the heart of Providence; a story whose last chapter was still unwritten. Isn’t that the way of some experiences – their essence is unconsciously rolled inside a warm and nurturing cocoon, awaiting the right time to emerge as new wings? And instead of completing my walk to the gorge, I turn ‘round and walk back to the house, finding my way to the seat before the keyboard and begin typing the letters that make some sense of the revelation that came as I flowed downstream. And so it goes…I’m standing on an island of bare, dry rock ledge – halfway up the gorge. Higher up, stagnant ice flows drape down over the rock shelves that a week earlier were covered in blankets of flowing water. How strange it was to find that the upper springs had run dry. Yet, when I turned and looked a bit further down the stream-bed, I saw that water was still flowing...and I knew, there was another source - there was still lots of water flowing a bit further down...but where was its starting place? I followed the flowing waters with my eyes - not downstream, but...upstream...to a place, above which, I saw no more

439-7644 flow...and I knew that I had found the Source... I walked down to that area and reveled in finding what I had not found before - a new place from which crystal clear waters, filtered by the underground rock caverns of the surrounding hills, make their entrance into the world above. We’ve lived here for over seven years...and this was the first time I stood over this particular place. How I reveled in finding this place - this Source of pristine water that I knew I could sip without having to filter...the true Water of Life. And it made me think, and still does, as I ponder the significance of...the Source. Is there but one Source deep within the flowing inner streams of our beings? I think there is a great well deep down inside; a reservoir filled with the essence of our unique wonder. It is a gift from those who came before - a little piece of this and that parent, grandparent, great grandparent, and great, great grandparent. We are not who they were - we are unique in the recipe of spices we took from this one and that one - a totally new spring of crystal clear essence with the opportunity to emerge into the outer world...if only given the chance. Others need not discover how and where we emerge from our
cultural-sameness - the outer shells and brain synapses that are systematically trained to conform...it only matters that we, at some point in our lives, peel back the layers...and find...Our Source. This is what I Know, that within each being there is a source of pure and unadulterated uniqueness that I must honor - that part in you and me. And my unending hope is that we bow in respect to that part of each of us, realizing that it's there - no matter how hard the shells of some may have become. Deep inside, there is a magical well...or so I choose to believe. To me, it seems a crime that so many travel paths provided for them by others - by the “System” constructed around their perfection...and never realize...or taste the sweet nectar that they alone were given to nurture and share. Perhaps it’s time to do some mining…deep down inside…and sip…and share. part of recovery
by Sandra Marnell lcohol and drug use, gambling and all other addictions have a profound impact on an individual's physical and mental health affecting their ability to undertake healthpromoting behaviours and participate in treatment and recovery.

Many people in recovery from addiction are not able to enjoy the full benefits of recovery because they do not adopt a health and wellness-oriented lifestyle. Individuals in recovery or a family member affected by addiction often need help to overcome self-defeating patterns such as: neglecting routine healthcare; denying warning signs and physical symptoms; self-medicating; overeating; not getting enough sleep; getting too much sleep; or only focusing on others. Changing a particular behavior is not easy. It requires self-reflection, being informed about options, making choices, developing skills, constantly reviewing and readjusting and at the same time having your personal needs met by your support system. And along the way, remembering to laugh out loud and love who you are.

Meditation
101
An Excerpt from ‘Everyday Meditation’ by Tobin Blake ne day when I was first learning meditation, I stood on the rear porch of my father’s home overlooking Oregon’s looping McKenzie River and watched as the sun faded over the mountains to the west. While I was growing up in Los Angeles, the city felt like a vast, hardened prison from which no escape seemed possible. Back then, my only moments of release came while gazing across the Pacific Ocean, where humans and their works ended, and nature and hers began — toward the freedom of the open horizon.
O
Likewise, here was the grand McKenzie River, carving its course with no mind for people, time, or obstacles of any type. Set a mountain in front of this river, and it would chew the mountain into a valley. I appreciate that spirit! At the time, I did not realize what enchanted my eye so, but now I know what it was. It was not the beauty of the land, the sweep of the river, or the sunset. It was the freedom of the moment that hooked me. For just one instant, I lost myself to life’s flow and experienced a peace unlike any I had felt before. You have probably had moments like this too, when you have “lost yourself” and perhaps even felt touched by some mysterious, magnetic force that seemed to connect with your own life from somewhere deep within. For most people, these moments are like glimpses through a window that is ordinarily hidden but that serves to remind us that there is far more to life than what we can see, touch, or hear. They are mystical moments that, in a flash, infuse life with meaning and a renewed sense of purpose. The practice of meditation is the practice of actively making yourself open to this experience and the far more compelling states that can follow, for this common, passing experience is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to inner space. Practiced actively, meditation can lead to states of sublime peace and profound joy that are so powerful, they defy description. Hindus, who have been meditating for thousands of years, refer to these ecstatic meditative states as samadhi. During meditation, you switch your focus from the external world — with its complexity, constant stress, and sense of separation — toward the internal world, which is the opposite in every respect. this shift you may discover that just beyond our ordinary human awareness, life is a vast, interconnected network that exists in a state of peaceful union. Essentially, through meditation you learn that you are not a physical being living a temporary life of separation from the rest of the world, but a spirit living an eternal life of union with every living creature in the universe. You are a part of them, and they are a part of you. This realization is impossible to describe because there is no parallel experience in the world to compare it to, making it doubly difficult to understand intellectually. Deep meditation has been likened to orgasm, but I think this analogy is misleading. Rather, I would say it is akin to the instant immediately preceding the release of orgasm, except that it never ceases to build in intensity and depth, and the experience has a certain purity and innocence that sex does not. After twenty years of devoted meditation, I am still wondering how deep the rabbit hole goes. I am gradually coming to believe that to be in tune with Spirit is to be in tune with an ever-expanding creative impulse to forever let go, to forever give oneself away. As for the sensations this expansive impulse creates, if the mainstream populace suspected the kind of intense joy that meditation can trigger, people would be knocking down the doors of their local meditation center to learn its secrets. It’s no wonder that the practice has proved so effective at promoting health and healing. Happiness and peace boost the immune system naturally.
