Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you We have a six-month-old puppy, named Z, who came to the family Thanksgiving celebration. While there, someone asked me what training method I use. I was at a loss in response, since I don’t have a training technique. Not having an answer gave me that “less-than” feeling, as it seemed I should have a system for training my dog. Z is 90 pounds already and I want her to be well liked by one and all. Yet, it is not in my nature to enforce an agenda on someone else—human or animal. Because I was taken aback by this question, it stuck with me for days. I then began to recognize that I do have a training approach, I spend tons of quality time with my animals. Four-legged animals don’t use a vocal vocabulary, they communicate silently. Essentially, so do we. The words humans vocalize is estimated to be only 10% of their communication—body language, unspoken intention, and inflection making up the other 90%. Point is, by being together, Z and I have learned to understand each other beyond words. We both pick up nonverbal cues for what is acceptable, without consciously “training” the other. This allows me to speak to her only as a reinforcement of what she already sensed. Although not infallible, in my opinion, so far this is working for us. Having begun my spiritual search some time in my teens, I can honestly say it’s been my way for the majority of this life. Over the years, I continually asked for a teacher to help me. I have gone to workshops, lectures, and read countless books looking for one. Most of which interested and inspired me; none of which felt like the one teacher I had been looking for. So, I continued my self-study. This consists mostly of time alone, or in the company of trees and animals, listening and writing. While doing so, I have heard many things within. When a thought has great truth, my body has a certain feel about it—a tingling or vibration. It’s as though my bones know veracity. Even so, I continued to look for someone else to teach me. Only now, after years of searching, do I see that I was given a teacher the moment I asked for one. That teacher was me. These two stories may seem unrelated. Yet, both are examples of finding, claiming and trusting in my own nature. I have a rich inner life. Even so, at times I search outwardly for answers—turning to people I love, books or teachers to show me the way. It turns out that their ideas are only helpful tools to use in finding my own path. This is true for all of us, even those who find one method or teacher to follow. We have reached the end of 2012, a time when prophecies have predicted great transition. The vital and simple question is; do you listen to and also follow your inner rhythm and teacher? If not, decide what it would take to change that and do it.

Generations” follows what happens when these wise women unite. Facing a world in crisis, they share with us their visions of healing and a call for change now, before it's too late. This film documents their unparalleled journey and timely perspectives on a timeless wisdom. The Grandmother’s mission statement is: “We, the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers, represent a global alliance of prayer, education and healing for our Mother Earth, all her inhabitants, all the children, and for the next seven generations to come. We are deeply concerned with the unprecedented destruction of our Mother Earth and the destruction of indigenous ways of life. We believe the teachings of our ancestors will light the way through an uncertain future. We look to further our vision through the realization of projects that protect our diverse cultures: lands, medicines, language and ceremonial ways of prayer and through projects that educate and nurture our children.” Carole Hart, the producer/director of this film, who will be present at the showing, is an award-winning television and film producer/writer. She began her career in television working with her partner and husband, Bruce Hart, as one of the original writers of “Sesame Street,” for which she won her first Emmy. She also produced, with Marlo Thomas, “Free to Be ... You and Me,” the now classic children's album, best-selling book and Peabody Awardwinning television special. She and Bruce created and produced “Hot Hero Sandwich,” an innovative Emmy-winning NBC series for adolescents. Her credits also include a number of movies and docudramas made for television: “Sooner or Later,” a movie musical that generated a top ten song and a Platinum soundtrack album: “Leap of Faith,” a groundbreaking docudrama about a woman who brought her cancer into remission through alternative means; and again teamed with Marlo Thomas to create a multi-award winning mixed-media documentary for Lifetime Television, “Our Heroes, Ourselves.” For more information, call 518-210-1557.

Fresh from teaching workshops at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, Lynn McGonagill, Founder and Teaching Channel of the Lightworkers Healing Method, now brings these workshops to the Kripalu Retreat Center. Lynn has trained with higher-dimension Avatars since 1990, for the past twelve years has worked with thousands of clients, and began teaching this unique and powerful Angelically guided energy healing art in 2007. She is now leading these experiential workshops, including demonstrations and practice sessions, nationwide. “The core curriculum consists of four progressive workshops. Level One provides the matrix of the energy alignment. Adding techniques into the matrix takes the work to a whole new level; it's like planting seeds in a fertile field. Level One provides the field; Levels Two and Three are the seeds. Level Four is the water. I have always wanted to teach Levels One and Two in a combined weeklong intensive, and Kripalu is providing us that opportunity,” Lynn joyfully explains.

Breast Thermography Radiation-Free Breast Cancer Screening by Patricia Bowden-Luccardi LMT, CNMT, CTT s breast cancer science evolves so should your wellness strategy. Mammography has been the Gold Standard for 25 years for breast cancer screening, but many women are opting for Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging, aka DITI or thermography, that is non-invasive, radiation-free and painless. The promising aspect of thermography is to detect physiological changes in the body that are produced by developing pathology or disease, in some cases up to 10 years prior to identification on a mammogram.
A
In recent years, mammography has been controversial and come into question, as have other medical devices that emit ionizing radiation. It is well known that radiation is cumulative and carries health risks. In November 2009, the United States Preventative Services Task Force said it recommended that women begin regular mammograms at 50 instead of 40 and that mammograms are needed every two years instead of annually between the ages of 50 and 74. The reason the United States Preventative Services Task Force reversed its aggressive mammogram guidelines was because of the exposure to radiation. The National Cancer Institute states “any level of radiation can cause cancer…it is ironic that ionizing radiation is our best screening tool now for 50 years.”
Still Point is an interfaith retreat center located just minutes from downtown Saratoga. We offer space for reflection and personal time as well as programs for healing and enriching one’s spirit, mind and body.
A critical difference between thermography versus mammography is the ability to detect problems early enough to use preventive measures, rather than detecting disease at a stage where treatment is imminently required. Developing breast cancer can be detected before it has the density to be seen on a radiograph. As the growing tumor develops a renegade blood supply through a process called angioneogenesis, the increase in heat can be identified on a thermal image and compared to the opposite breast. Inflammation created in the surrounding tissues and lymph nodes is also easily identified on highly sensitive medical grade cameras. A study conducted by Dr. William Hobbins at the University of Wisconsin Medical Center concluded that thermography had 10 times the yield as compared to family history. Abnormal findings on a thermogram, not correlated by mammography was followed for many years utilizing thermography for changes associated with cancer development. In many cases, mammography and resulting biopsy was positive, as much as 8-10 years later in the exact area the thermogram predicted that a cancer might be present. In a 2008, The American Society of Breast Surgeons performed a study at NY Presbyterian Hospital - Cornell, finding themographic interpretations identified 58 correctly of 60 malignancies, correlating to a 97% accuracy. The conclusion was DITI is

a valuable adjunct to mammograms and ultrasound particularly with women with dense breast parenchyma. Thermography can be used by women of all anatomies, sizes and ages, even pregnant and women nursing. It’s not modified by breast density and is ideal for women who have had cosmetic or reconstructive surgery. As most adult females do not have a mammogram until age 40, there is a critical time period from age 20 to 39 that thermography could be beneficial. Thermography is a particularly good choice for younger breasts, which tend to be denser. It doesn't identify fibrocystic tissue, breast implants or scars as needing further investigation. It's also good at detecting changes in the cells in the armpit area, an area that mammography isn’t always good at screening.

Your Invitation to
Profound
Personal Transformation by Victorea Luminary (f/k/a Andrea Mincsak) ave you ever felt that you were doing all the right things and getting all the wrong results? I have felt this often in my life.
H
For many years, I searched to find and eliminate the cause of my unhappiness. I finally found those answers during the first class of the Inca Medicine Wheel in September, 2010. I was surprised to discover the negative core beliefs that had been hidden deep in my subconscious keeping me stuck in the rut of suffering and blocking my path to wholeness and happiness. Our negative beliefs attract to us the people and situations that prove them right. Subsequently, even though we do all the right things our finances dwindle, our relationships fail and we repeat the same patterns again and again. To heal we must clear the imprint of these negative beliefs from our luminous energy field. Only then can we move forward in life with ease and grace. I have been a professional energy practitioner for over 20 years. Yet, during this program I learned new techniques to clear the luminous energy field more profoundly and powerfully than ever before.
Space clearing specialist

The core shamanic practice is the illumination which is taught in the South class. Our luminous energy field informs us and predisposes us to certain kinds of situations, relationships, recurring patterns and behaviors. It stores imprints of our personal, ancestral, karmic memories, traumas and illnesses. It downloads information to our energy centers and into our central nervous system. The illumination process clears the energy field so that we no longer source from the old patterns and behaviors. It is like a spring cleaning! Soul retrieval is taught in the North class. Soul retrieval recaptures those lost soul parts that fragmented off, integrating them back into our energy field and our awareness. Despachos are prayer bundles that help us to energetically release what no longer serves us, while at the same time acting as a magnet attracting to us what does serve. They are created with intention and burned during sacred fire ceremony. Through this work, my life began shifting immediately and continues to evolve and transform in ways I never could have dreamed. I learned to get off the triangle of suffering and stop playing the parts of victim, perpetrator or rescuer. What once triggered me and caused havoc in my life no longer does. I learned that there are so many more dimensions that affect this lifetime and I learned how to heal my personal past, ancestral influences, past lives and more. As I progressed around the medicine wheel I moved into a place of allowing. In this new place of allowing I fully became co-creator of my world. I am now able to focus on and create what I desire with ease and grace. Manifesting has become so fast that all I need to do is think of something and it happens. Of course, this could only happen once I released those negative patterns and influences. This is the most powerful and transformative program I have ever taught. I invite you to join me to experience your own epic journey of transformation through the Inca Medicine Wheel.

Nevertheless, the environment inside a joint capsule is precarious. Any imbalance can have a cumulative impact. Once the path toward arthritis has begun, it may be possible to stop it, but capacity for regeneration is limited at best. Any muscles that cross a stiff, painful and constantly aggravated joint tend to tighten up. That is what muscles do when they are in areas of constant pain. They may also develop some trigger points in the process, because they will not get to relax as long as that joint is in pain. The tension they cause compress the joint, making it even more painful, which reinforces the spasm, and so on. Eventually the person with arthritis will want to stop using the injured joint because it hurts so much. Lack of use leads to atrophy; the wasting away of the joint structure and the tissues that surround it. The nearby muscles then get weaker, the synovial membranes stop functioning, and the joint fluid dries up.
loose, the joint can become unstable, raising the risk of arthritis. Hippocrates said in 460 BC that “Rubbing can bind a joint that is too loose or loosen a joint that is too tight”. Repetitive pounding stress, such as running or jumping with inadequate support, can also open the door to problems. Hormonal imbalances and nutritional deficiencies, including inadequate calcium metabolism, may compromise the health of joint structures. Being overweight adds stress to knees and hips. Age itself changes the quality of articular cartilage, making it drier and more prone to injury. Osteoarthritis can be completely debilitating when it occurs at the hip or knee because the pain and inflammation are badly exacerbated by walking. Treatment options for osteoarthritis have improved considerably in recent years. The goals of treatment are to reduce pain and inflammation and to limit or reverse the damage incurred in the joint structures. These goals are accomplished in a number of different ways, depending on how advanced the condition is. A recently developed variety of painkillers called Cox-2 inhibitors work to limit the action of an enzyme associated with pain and inflammatory response. The book, Beyond Aspirin, which is a comprehensive review of natural approaches to inflammatory disorders is recommended.
Many changes in the body begin the process of joint degeneration. When the ligaments that surround joints get chronically 14 Healing Springs I #65 • December, 2012—January, 2013
If you have been diagnosed with Arthritis it is recommended that you exercise within pain tolerance to achieve 3 goals; improve and maintain healthy range of motion, increase stamina and lose weight, and improve the strength of muscles surrounding the affected joints. Nutrition should also be evaluated; inflammatory foods such wheat, dairy and sugar should be limited to decrease the amount of inflammation in the body. When there is excess inflammation, it may travel to joints and contribute to pain and stiffness. A consultation with a nutritionist or Naturopathic Doctor would be most beneficial. Massage can help to reduce pain through release of the muscles surrounding the affected joints and to maintain range of motion through gentle stretching and passive movement. It can also address issues of muscle tightness and imbalance, as well as stiffness and chronic pain experienced in muscle-tendon units that cross the knee joint. If a treatment strategy is developed to retrain the knee extensors to track the patella appropriately over the joint, massage may be a useful part of an effort to slow or stop permanent cartilage damage. Passive movement may re-educate the joint as to how much more freely it can move, as well as to demonstrate to the brain the diminished levels of discomfort.

Sugar nutrition’s bad boy by Ann Carey Tobin, MD ugar’s bad reputation is relatively old news for most of us in the integrative medicine community. But, thankfully, sugar’s notoriety has finally made the front pages.
S
The story now being highlighted is one of sugar unleashed from it’s natural package–fruit, which contains helpful attendant fiber and micronutrients. In the hands of the food industry sugar, largely in the form of fructose, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) or sucrose (table sugar, which is equal parts fructose and glucose) is transformed into a highly addictive, feel-good substance that is making us sick. And, I don’t just mean dental cavities and diabetes. According to Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s April 1, 2012 60 Minutes interview of three scientists, sugar is a major driver in the develop-

ment of obesity, metabolic syndrome, type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and high blood pressure. It is also a growth factor in at least one third of cancers. Dr. Robert Lustig, a pediatric endocrinologist from the University of California, San Francisco, and star of the hit YouTube video, “Sugar: the Bitter Truth”, declares that the “sweet and irresistible” fructose is toxic. Dr. Lustig surmises that evolution embedded the propensity to like sweet foods in us as a way to signal that fruit was a safe and useful food. It represents delicious energy, packed with useful micronutrients (such as vitamins and minerals) wrapped up in fiber that slows the absorption of the fructose. In general, you can only eat so much whole fruit, naturally limiting your intake of nature’s natural source of sugar. With food processing over the centuries, we developed favorite sugar-laden treats, that we generally understood required modified intake. With the advent of the anti-fat movement, however, the food industry needed to replace the taste-bud satisfying fat with something; hence, the 1970’s surge in sugar intake. Leading the charge is the manufactured HFCS found in many processed foods, including the usual suspects, such as sweetened beverages and desserts, but also in products such as bread, peanut butter and ketchup. On average, Americans consume 130 pounds of sugar per person per year. That is one third of a pound per day. Dr. Lustig has declared this a Public Health Crisis. Research conducted by Kimber Stanhope, a nutritional biologist from UC Davis, demonstrates that the message carried by added sugars, in this case HFCS, is harmful. In other words, “a calorie is not just a calorie.” According to Stanhope’s findings, within two weeks of regular consumption of 25% of their calories in the

form of a HFCS-containing beverage, young healthy test subjects demonstrated increases in factors that promote the risk of heart disease, including the atherosclerosis generating small, dense LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Other researchers are demonstrating how fructose is converted into fat for storage in the liver, and how, if left unchecked, it quickly translates into dangerous fat that surrounds the visceral (internal) organs (see links below). Dr. Gupta’s exposé also interviewed Lewis Cantley, Harvard Professor, and head of Beth Israel Deaconess Cancer Center. His research highlights how the spike in insulin following sugar consumption will stimulate certain cancer cells to grow. He states that one third of cancers (including breast and prostate) have extra insulin receptors that “hijack the flow of glucose” in the blood stream in order to promote their growth. The final scientist interviewed by Dr. Gupta is Eric Stice, a neuroscientist at the Oregon Research Institute. He equates the response of the brain to sugar with that of drugs, such as cocaine. Brain MRI scans demonstrate that the same reward centers in the brain that engage with drug and alcohol use, those that respond with a release of dopamine–a “feel good” neurotransmitter, also light up when sugar is ingested. This results in an euphoric effect. Many of us respond to this effect by increasing our consumption of sugar. As with other drugs, tolerance ensues, resulting in an increased need to consume more sugar to achieve the same result. Research also demonstrates that our brains rebel when presented with artificial sweeteners. It expects to receive something sweet in return for the stimulus provided by the artificial sweetener, and as a consequence, many people just eat more “real” sugar later. The lesson is there are no short-cuts. The best advice is to significantly reduce, if not eliminate, sugar intake from processed foods, and return to the largely whole foods diets of our ancestors. When consuming a manufactured, boxed and packaged product, be sure to carefully read labels. This includes foods that are often thought of as healthy, such as yogurt, smoothies, energy bars, and of course, juices.
And I leave you on this note: as mentioned, there is concern that persistently elevated blood “non-diabetic” glucose levels and after meal glucose spikes contribute to many of the chronic diseases of Western civilization. In addition to those detailed in the 60 Minutes report, other researchers are concerned about the link of excessive sugar intake to Alzheimer’s (now being called Type III diabetes by many in the field), kidney disease, pancreatic dysfunction, and development of diabetic complications (vision and nerve dysfunction), even before meeting the official criteria for the diagnosis of diabetes. Currently, a diagnosis of diabetes is not made until an individual demonstrates fasting blood sugar levels over 125 mg/dL. An individual is “prediabetic” with blood sugar levels of 100-125 mg/dL. Optimal fasting blood sugar levels, though, are actually in the 70-85 mg/dL range. In addition, the traditional fasting blood sugar test does not identify the problem of after-meal blood glucose spikes. To optimize your health it is important that you work to eliminate those spikes, and that you aim for a fasting blood sugar goal below 86 mg/dL. Be well. I suggest you also view these shortrelated out take videos from the 60 Minutes program: Fruit vs. sugary drinks Calories: not all created equal From fructose to fat How fructose builds body fat
In addition, be aware of the sugar content of homemade and Ann Carey Tobin, M.D., FAAFP, is a board certified family restaurant dishes. Dr. Lustig has coauthored an American Heart physician. by Paul Jensen, Jr, MS, LMT ssential oils provide far more than a beautiful smell and a soothing bath. They can help us eliminate pain, discomfort and create more ENERGY. They can even be used without opening their bottles! Essential oils share electromagnetic energy with us. Their electromagnetic energy helps us in MORE WAYS THAN ACTUALLY APPLYING THEM. We can become more at ease, relaxed and content just by holding an oil. AMAZING!!! We can have more energy for physical work, mental work or to play golf. We can be more creative, more focused or more peaceful. Essential oils benefits’ are limitless! We only need to understand how to use them to experience their benefits.
E
One way for you to begin to understand how to use an essential oil is to place a closed bottle in your right hand. How do you feel? If you feel tired, lethargic of uncomfortable please switch hands. If you still feel the same, please place the oil 3’ away from you. How do you feel? If you feel better please take three deep slow breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. How do you feel? If you feel even better please try holding the closed oil bottle in your right hand again. If you feel even better or no different, please place the closed oil bottle in your right pocket. Placing an oil in your pocket or purse you carry maintains the improvements ALL DAY! If you feel worse again, please continue to keep the oil at least 3’ away from you for 24-48 hours. You can try holding it in your right hand again. If it still causes you to feel uncomfortable please do not hold it. Please try holding a different oil to see if it helps you feel better. Essential oils benefit each of us in different ways, AND each of us responds differently to any essential oil. Therefore, Lavender may help some of us relax and recover, but others of us may experience more energy. ‘Essential Oils For Everyone’s Benefit’ is a series of essential oil classes designed to help everyone become comfortable using essential oils. Jill Stewart is a contributor and sponsor of all the classes. She provides Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils for class participants to use. Her business is Private Label Aromatherapy. Holistic Fascial Integration:
Bodywork That Shapes Our Fascia & Integrates Our Body, Mind & Spirit by Paul Jensen, Jr, MS, LMT ur fascia is connective tissue deep to our skin that provides support and movement for nerves, organs, blood vessels and muscles. It tightens to protect injuries, and can become restricted if there is a history of trauma, chronic pain, autoimmune conditions or lack of physical activity. A restriction differs from tightness in that there is NO movement in the restricted area. When fascia tightens it still allows movement; restrictions immobilize. When our fascia is free of tightness and restrictions we can experience elimination of pain, ease of movement and more energy.
O
What is “Shaping the Fascia”? “Shaping the fascia” moves the fascia with our hands into new positions for optimal support and functioning. The fascia is literally “shaped” based on what support and improvement in functioning is needed. Holistic Fascial Integration shapes the fascia ONLY in directions that help eliminate tightness and restrictions. Our fascia can be “shaped” to support any activity or sport we practice. Our fascia is like our shadow, it mirrors our every movement. The more we engage in the same activity or sport, the stronger our fascia becomes during those specific movements. If we play a musical instrument, our fascia becomes stronger the more we practice. As a result we experience less fatigue and can play longer with less effort.
Holistic Fascial Integration provides a customized session that is based on our goals, history of injury, past surgeries and the activities most frequently performed. Therapy is performed lying, standing or while engaging in movements related to activities of daily living or sport. It can be gentle, aggressive, subtle or obvi- Fascia is organized in lines that run in every direction. The “lines” ous. There are many techniques used to address tightness and are connected to each other like a spider web. “Shaping” the fasrestrictions in the fascia. Holistic Fascial Integration “shapes” cial lines that cover our bodies changes the dynamics of the web. its integrity. Fascia needs freedom! Tightness and restrictions inhibit optimal functioning. “Shaping” the fascial lines for freedom varies based on individual differences. No two people have identical fascial lines. THEREFORE, IT IS CRITICAL THAT EVERYONE’S FASCIAL LINES ARE SHAPED JUST FOR THEM.
How is Our Fascia “Shaped”? Holistic Fascial Integration identifies tightness and restrictions in the fascia prior to shaping. The fascia is shaped by a therapist’s hands. Each shaping technique used provides a different effect. Depending on the location of the tightness or restriction the therapist will use a certain technique. Where the fascia covers the hands and feet can require fast hand movements to warm and shape the fascia. Along the spine a therapist’s hands can sink their hands into the fascia and shape it by pulling it in certain directions. The organization of our lines of fascia determines shaping techniques as well. Special care is taken to be sure to identify where specifically the tightness or restriction is located. If there is a restriction close to the top of the right shoulder the therapist may rub her hands together until heat is felt, and place them over the restriction for 30-seconds. This technique can eliminate the restriction. If a line of fascia covers the top of the right foot, right leg, torso and left shoulder, A THERAPIST WILL SHAPE THE ENTIRE FASCIAL LINE. This is to ensure no tightness or restriction is affecting discomfort in any area the fascial line covers.
How Can Shaping Our Fascia Help Us Optimize Recovery? Whether we are recovering from an acute or chronic injury shaping our fascia allows us to feel better faster. Shaping the fascia helps optimize recovery by: • Increasing circulation to injured area. • Stabilizing unstable joints as in an ankle sprain or shoulder dislocation. • Integrating ideal functioning of injured area- helping to reestablish norma functioning of TMJ • Creating more support and protection to allow injured area to be used without concern.

we need less effort to run fast. We are able to generate more force with ease. The same freedom and ease can be experienced throwing a ball, swinging a golf club or even avoiding punches and kicks. Our fascia is always supporting the movements we perform. The more frequently we perform a certain movement, the stronger our fascia becomes in supporting that movement. Throwing a baseball or swinging a golf club are movements that our fascia can provide more consistency and efficiency. Our fascia can be shaped to strengthen sport specific movements. A therapist can shape the fascial lines that run across the throwing arm, legs and torso to provide more capacity to store and release kinetic energy. This will cause more velocity, control and protection for the pitcher’s throwing arm. Swinging a golf club is slightly different. A therapist can shape the lines of fascia that cover the shoulders, neck, legs and torso to produce more consistency, velocity and control. Running faster, jumping higher, throwing harder or avoiding punches and kicks requires our fascia to be free of tightness and restrictions. Shaping the fascia specific to any sport provides: • Less risk of injury. • Greater expression of strength or power. • Faster recovery from training sessions and practices. • Greater efficiency running, skating, throwing, swinging, etc. • More comfort when training or practicing at a high intensity. Shaping our fascia enables any athlete to compete with less effort and greater success.

Shaping the fascia helps to integrate our body, mind and spirit. This happens through experiencing more comfort. When we become comfortable in our bodies we can relax. Our minds calm, slow and we become more present and focused. As we relax our connection to our body becomes more sensitive. We can sense our body’s needs for water, food, rest and movement. Feeling relaxed also helps us to be more creative at work or play. Creativity engages our spiritual nature. It helps us feel empowered and expressive. Spirituality or our connection to creativity, nature and each other is integrated into our body and mind when we are at ease.
What’s Up with Organic Foods? Individualized Nutrition for the Complex Person by Sarah A LoBisco, ND here’s been a lot of attack recently on “health foods”, even regarding the “pure stuff”. In fact, a study discounting organic food benefits recently went viral over the internet. As expected, this caused quite a controversy.
T
The study reported that their findings demonstrated the non-existence of a significant difference between the nutrient content of organic foods and conventional products. A backlash of various experts pointing to some weakness in the study’s design soon followed. Below lists a summary of the main issues in assessing health content of organic foods based on this one study which only used one measure:
Issue 1:
Taking one specific phytonutrient (plant constituents found to be beneficial in modulating health), mineral, or vitamin in isolation doesn’t give a comprehensive picture of the full healing properties of the plant. This is akin to assessing the health of your car by only assessing the amount of gas by looking at the fuel gauge. Sure, you need gas to run the car, but the engine, battery, and other components must be in working order to utilize the gas to run the car safely!
Issue 2:
“artificially mineral rich soil” to increase its levels in a comparison analysis, may not prove to be accurate. I prefer to think that nature’s design of the ratio of specific nutrients is more intelligent than vegetables manipulated to be artificial mineral boosters. This was evident with the wide-spread press on the dangers of “folic acid” a few years back. Various studies found that the wrong kind of this essential vitamin in our enriched food supply could prove to be more toxic than a deficiency in it. This is not true when supplementing with the right form and other synergistic components of natural folic acid! This is why assessing individualized need and knowing your source quality of supplements is vital!
Issue 3: Various studies have shown that organic foods ARE more nutritious. A 2010 article from PLoS spent two years comparing the nutrient content of two plants using a cross-sectional comparison. In other words, this study was well designed comparing the correct species of plants.
An abundance of further references and scientific journals In the modern era of plant manipulation, GMOs, and power reporting the benefit of organics can be found at the Organic plants, the confounding factor of conventional plants raised in Trade Association Website. #65 • December, 2012—January, 2013 I Healing Springs 25
Issue 4: We are still asking the wrong question. Ok, let’s say that with some foods, the nutrient content is similar or less in organic foods. Even if this were the case, it doesn’t mean that they are equally healthy. As mentioned, we are only analyzing one measure of health (phytonutrient, mineral or vitamin content) and assuming that everyone needs that specific nutrient. To be truly healthy, we need to consider not just what we are eating in quantity, but quality and if it’s what our individual body needs to flourish! An article in Atlantic put this short-sighted look into question: In a widely publicized and discussed analysis of more than 200 studies comparing organic to regular food products, researchers have found that organics don’t have more vitamins or minerals (with the lone exception of phosphorus, which we all get in sufficient amounts anyway). Nor do they have an appreciable effect when it comes to heading off food-borne illness, although the germs found in conventional meat do have a higher chance of being drug-resistant (more on that in a bit). That we needed a study to understand how nutritionally similar organic foods are to non-organics is a perfect example of the way we’ve lost sight of what the term really means. It’s worth keeping in mind that organic refers only to a particular method of production; while switching to organic foods can be good for you insofar as doing so helps you avoid nasty things like chemicals and additives, there’s nothing in the organic foods themselves that gives them an inherent nutritional advantage over non-organics. In other words, it’s not wrong to say organic food is “healthier” than non-organics. It’s just unrealistic to think that your organic diet is slowly turning you into Clark Kent.
studies of common drug treatments or even improperly prescribed supplements. Dr. Goldman commented in a recent issue of Holistic Primary Care: Amid the recent clamor over metanalyses suggesting that organic veggies are no more nutritious than conventional, and that omega-3?s may not reduce heart disease mortality, another important metanalysis got totally overlooked: the one showing that anti-hypertensive drugs are largely ineffective in people with Stage 1 hypertension. I’m not saying that drugs aren’t needed at times, especially for life-threatening high blood pressure readings. I am saying that an attack on organic foods having more media coverage than the billions of dollars spent on ineffective treatments must be noted. Therefore, maybe the reason we are seeking to “superfood” our diet with organic isn’t because we need mega doses of one specific nutrient, but because we can’t argue that with food, synergism of less toxins and residues, more bioavailable and natural forms of nutrients, and quality does fit-all. With drugs, supplements, and health care, as noted above, this is not the case.

Do any of you use your skills in treating animals? What can treat, which skill do you use, how effective are you, and what is the success rate in treating animals?
Oriental Medicine; Gregg St Clair Actually all of my skills are used in treating animals, just not by me. Many people have heard of the use of acupuncture for animals and I get asked this question all the time. I don't have time to treat animals and my office isn't set up for them so I leave it to the professional veterinarians that specialize in it. I was at my dentist recently and we were talking about health. He mentioned to his assistant that I was an acupuncturist and she said,”Oh, I completely believe in acupuncture, we had it done for my horse and now she’s a completely new horse!” My dentist, also a long time friend and a wise ass said, “Did you give it a new name?” Some Western Professionals have the false assumption that acupuncture only works because of a placebo effect. That is the patient wants it to work and therefore it does. Even if that is true

(sounds pretty powerful to me), I can guarantee you a cat doesn't go to the vet and think, “Oh boy, time for my acupuncture again, I hope this works.” Some very real things happen with acupuncture; including increasing circulation, reducing inflammation, stimulating the immune system, balancing hormones and releasing endorphins which reduce pain and calm anxiety. If this works with people why wouldn't it work with animals? (Many people don't realize that many medicines before they are used on people are first approved for veterinary use.) At 12 years old, Dori, my beloved husky mix whom I rescued in Alaska when she was three months old, began to limp. I started treating her and every treatment she would be good for a month or two. At 14, about the upper age for that breed, she had a stroke and I thought that was the end. I kept needling her though and she managed to limp along to a full, happy life of almost 17 with no drug or surgical interventions. In addition to acupuncture there are Chinese herbs designed specifically for animals. I recommend Dr. Ron Scharf at www.animalhospitalniskayuna.com for all your veterinarian needs. I can personally attest to his experience with acupuncture (over 20 years) and his dedication to integrating alternative therapies into his practice. He can be reached at 518-785-9731. minds and experiences of people who might otherwise look sceptically upon a lot of alternative therapies. All of the modalities that I use, save hypnosis, can be used on animals. And there can be no denying the effectiveness of it. Not unlike witnessing the effect on an infant, or child. I personally do not apply jin shin jyutsu, or zero balancing to animals, but I have spoken to practitioners who have and they get repeat calls, which says that the owner witnessed the changes, even if he couldn't understand it. I have used homeopathy for animals over a large part of my years as a working homeopath. Mostly, it has been for dogs and cats, but I once suggested a remedy for a fish that appeared to its owner to be sick. The pellet was dropped into the water, and within moments, the fish revived and its behavior returned to normal. Owners of animals know and attribute very complex personality traits to their animals, and it is an aspect of what is taken into account when using a homeopathic remedy. The same is done in the case of infants and children. A homeopath will first gather the physical symptoms, the effects of an imbalance upon energy and eating habits. Then we gather the general nature of the animal, and how that has changed, if at all. Every small detail is important, even the breed of the dog or cat. I have been blessed to have treated many rescued greyhounds over the years, and gotten to know the breed. It makes it easier for me to assess what needs to be treated, as well as the history which is often related to the later imbalances that present when I am consulted.
wrapped in a treat. It has been my experience, as well, that the animals seem to sense when the remedy is right or not. If dissolved in their water, and it's not correct, they won't drink it, if it is, they drink it to their heart's content. I am not an animal owner, but I love to be able to relate to them in these ways. Homeopathy is so simple to use for them and so safe. There are even small books on the homeopathic treatment of dogs and cats, which could be applied to any other animal, eg. horses, cows, birds, etc. Jerome Pindell uses homeopathy, hypnosis, jin shin jyutsu in a comprehensive practice in Clifton Park, Niskayuna, and New York City. He can reached at 518-374-5492 or through his site: www.jeromepindell.com. He is also a self published poet whose book: 'Training Tracks, poems by implosion' can be purchased through Amazon.
Chiropractor; Lynn Allison In NYS chiropractors are not licensed to treat animals. They must have a veterinarian license also. Yet, vets seem to be okay with doing chiropractic on animals without a chiropractic license. In this area, vets are very protective of this and have been known to report chiropractors who have worked on animals. I do work on my own animals (dog and cats) with adjustments, massage and light therapy and have good results. Animals like children respond quickly to care so less is more. I have helped joint issues, digestive issues and attitude issues.

the
Qi Gong State
by Courtney Hughes and Brian Trzaskos i Gong is a meditative movement practice originating in ancient China thousands of years ago. An offspring of Qi Gong, Tai Chi, is better known in the western world and in actuality the practices are so similar that the novice may not be able to tell them apart.
Q
The ultimate goal of both Qi Gong and Tai Chi is to access a state of physical, mental, and spiritual coherence; the Qi Gong state. This experience of complete coherence signals a point of optimal physical functioning, emotional balance, and spiritual awareness. As long term seated meditators we were able to attain periodic levels of calmness within ourselves; however, continued to struggle, as many do, with incessant streams of thoughts. With Qi Gong we learned to take the practice “off of the cushion” so to speak, engendering much more than a state of deep relaxation but one of both physiological optimization and a profound sense of belonging in the natural world. Qi Gong teaches us to access the Qi Gong state not only during formal practice but more importantly as a function of daily life. We all recognize that waking life includes many challenges that result in anxiety and emotional stress. Our brains are largely responsible for creating these perceptual imbalances yet ironically the brain has no direct contact with the outside world. Our brains are our body’s CEOs… in the dark. The brain is like a CEO who sits alone in her office. There are no windows, but billions of doors. Each minute of the day the doors open and close thousands of times as assistants come in to give their reports. The CEO never leaves the office and does not see the inter-workings of this large and complex company that she is running. She must use the information the assistants have gathered in order to make all her decisions. Sometimes the CEOs assistants come bursting in, going ballistic about some emergency situation that is happening. Simultaneously, other assistants also enter and give their versions, from their department’s perspective, on the severity and details of the events taking place. The CEO analyzes all the information that she is given and makes decisions based solely and exclusively on what she has heard and never on what she sees for herself. Every moment of the day our brains receive information. Through our experiences we sense what is going on around us and data is
Healing Springs I #65 • December, 2012—January, 2013
Your Next Best Friend sent to the brain for analysis. Since the brain needs to make all of it’s decisions based on this information with which it has never had first hand experiences, it is reasonable to conclude that it will attend to and deal with the most critical information first. If the brain consistently receives information that our life experiences are emergent, then the brain must adapt to a constant state of bombardment via excitatory information from its “assistants” often resulting in a state of high alert. This is exhausting! Imagine yourself sitting in an office where people are constantly running in exclaiming, “Oh NO! What’s happening is so horrible!” Of course the brain is going to send out all the reinforcements the body needs to deal with this stressful stimuli, which ironically results in more stress. Now, we have the unique ability to choose what information we are going to send to the CEO in the dark, our brains. What if instead of messages of impending danger, we were to send messages of calm and that even though things aren’t going the way we would like, we can handle it. How would the CEO react? She may not be so reactive or stressed. Being able to send such messages to our brain, that everything is going to be alright in the face of stress, requires that we have at least experienced what calm feels like in our bodies. The more practice we have at reaching that feeling within ourselves, the easier it becomes to achieve it again when we need it the most. Practicing Qi Gong teaches us to sense and direct vital energy by focusing on body, breath, and mind. Our breath follows our bodies and our minds follow our breath. When these three are aligned in the Qi Gong state, our bodies produce what the Chinese call an elixir, what Westerners might call the relaxation response and what we call just plain feeling good. When our bodies are used to feeling good, we are more readily able to return to that state, anytime, all the time and specifically when we are under stress. Calling upon the Qi Gong state at any moment in our lives gives us powerful options for choosing calm and peaceful reactions. In effect, we are choosing to say to the CEO in the dark, “Yep. Things are pretty stressful right now… but hey… look at me… I’m relaxed. We’re going to be just fine.”
