Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you “How do you value your life, Katrina?” This question was asked of me by Harrison Jim Sr., a Navajo Medicine Man coming to the Northeast as part of the Navajo Horse Healing Project. We were discussing his upcoming visit and other potential ways to bring their teachings to our community. I was stumped by the question, in part because of the use of the word “how.” All the quick answers that came would have answered, “what do I value?” The conversation at that moment was about charging a fee for their talks and healings, so I knew his question was not a matter of semantics. After some silence and then my answer “I’d have to give that some consideration.” Harrison added, “what value do you place on having peace and harmony restored in your life? That is what we ask for in exchange of our knowledge, gifts and healings.” This question was bouncing around my head when an old note showed up on my desktop. It was recording a time while driving down the Northway and a Target delivery truck passed me. I noticed the tag line “Expect more. Pay Less.” I’d probably seen that line many times prior, however, this time the symbolic imbalance caught my attention. Expecting more and paying less seemed like an American Mantra. What does this say about our culture’s idea of reciprocity? While the Target tag is referencing money in exchange for goods, we cannot separate that belief out from other areas of life, such as interpersonal relationships and how we make a living. With the assumption that we should pay less and get more, there is no equal exchange, creating imbalanced transactions—including the one we have with life in general. On the surface this may not seem important, on an energetic level it leaves everything in disharmony. I hadn’t yet found my answer to Harrison’s question, so I continued to ponder values in general. We all can come up with a list of them—perhaps peace, joy, friendship, equality, love, family and so on. However, our behavior speaks to what we actually value more than a list of words. Rarely would someone openly include their ego on such a list or big business, yet many people display these as their priorities by how they live their lives. On a different note, it came up in a few conversations recently that I am seen differently by others than how I witness myself. The differences were not necessarily negative, as one said she thought I was girly. Who is right? The person on the outside doing the seeing; or me on the inside who is doing the feeling? Perhaps both. While I am more comfortable with being well-liked, having a nice reputation, and being perceived my way, I place greater value on being true to my inner world, and authentic to my own experience of life no matter how that appears on the outside. Acting from the inside out means giving up impressing a specific image outwardly. In reality, this is never truly possible anyway; how we are perceived has more to do with the perceiver than it does with us. Which is perhaps why we are both right. Even so, when we are not paying attention to our inner world, falseness can fool others more easily, usually because it fools ourselves first. Life seems to ask us at times “are you truthful about your priorities, or do you only mean it when receiving approval, recognition, and adulation in return?” Knowing I still hold blind spots causes me to continually question my genuineness.

Healing Springs I #80 June—July, 2015
While there are times I’d rather feel certain about myself, I have realized that without questions, habitual responses and or addictive behavior replace real presence in each moment. So, I will continue to examine my truth. Just as there is no way to peace, peace is the way. There is no right way to authentic expression, living it is the way. In doing so, we sometimes get it wrong. Sounds contrary, but true all the same. Going back to where we started, how do you value life? In what way do you want to experience it—through peace, health and harmony or stress, illness and worry? What are you willing to exchange in order for that valued experience? Our human world has created money as a symbol of exchange; it is the main way in which we support what is important to us. Where we spend our most dollars is where our values truly lie, regardless of whether those things are on our list of principals. The same holds true for where our time is spent, the activities as well as the motivation behind them—such as fostering an ego or satisfying our soul. Questioning ourselves regularly will bring about authentic alignment, much greater than rigid rule-following will. Come out and hear Harrison and Gino talk about the Navajo culture on July 14th. We will be at Coesa Holistic Wellness Center in the Saratoga State Park starting at 7. It will be a powerful and valuable evening. While the suggested donation for this experience is $20, you may choose what to pay. In deciding the amount, consider what you’d pay for an night of entertainment. If you receive something more substantial, perhaps inspiring and or perception changing, offer an amount in accordance of value to that which you received to the best of your ability. The funds will be going to Gino and Harrison so they may continue to provide for their family while they are away from home. The following evening, on the 15th, they will be creating ceremony for the waters of Saratoga. Again you are welcome to join. The waters are not only important to those who choose to drink their healing properties, but because they run under the ground on which we walk they influence us all. In addition, please read about their Navajo Horse Healing Project on page 10. It is going to be a great summer. My choice is to experience it through peace, harmony and love. What’s your choice? In awe,

Behan touched the lives of countless individuals as a yoga instructor as well as a friend and mentor. As you may be aware, Still Point Retreat was very special to Mana. In trying to find a way to remember and honor Mana a group of her students went there and came up with the idea of placing granite benches around the fire pit where Mana loved to gather for ceremonial celebrations. Our hope is to generally improve the fire pit area with granite benches, improving the fire pit itself, and better landscaping the area around the fire pit. After working with a granite supplier, arrangements are being made to complete this memorial in June, to be followed by a celebration of Mana's life sometime around her birthday at the end of July. The donations will go to purchase, deliver and install the granite which is about $3,000. We've already raised $1,000 and we ask you to please consider helping us to meet our goal. Any amount over and above the $3,000 will be donated to Still Point. Checks are payable to Kim Berry, PO Box 504, Round Lake, NY. 12151

Navajo Horse Healing Project What is a Navajo Horse Blessing Ceremony? Although each ceremony is unique, the Horse Blessing Ceremony typically opens with the Navajo Creation Story of the horse and explains why the horse is so sacred to their culture. Stories are then told about the importance of connecting with nature, making time for family and loved ones, reevaluating our “needs” and embracing simplicity. Those in attendance are then invited to gather greens from the horses’ environment to be mixed with the medicinal herbs collected by a Navajo Medicine Person. Hot coals are added to create a moist, fragrant smoke. This smudge, as it is referred to, is the medicine that is offered to the horses. As sacred songs are sung and the smudge is taken to the horses, the healing properties begin and energy work (think: reiki) is performed. Those in attendance bear witness to the negative and unhealthy energy leaving the horses’ bodies, as they sigh, yawn and even roll on the ground (well known in the horse world as classic signs of release followed by inner peace). In this safe

environment, conducive to emotional processing and release, the healing goes beyond what could have been achieved on a purely physical level.
Who performs the ceremony? Harrison Jim Sr. is a Traditional Practitioner of Navajo Ceremonies and holds the highly esteemed title of Medicine Man. He is a member of the Navajo Nation, making his home on the Navajo Reservation lands of New Mexico. Harrison grew up around horses and got involved in rodeo as a saddle bronc rider. After an elder Medicine Man introduced him to the spiritual side of horses, Harrison longed to change the way he interacted with them. He prayed for forgiveness for the way he had handled them in the past and committed himself to learn how to conduct Traditional Navajo Horse Blessing Ceremonies.

The two quickly recognized a kinship in one another. In 2012, Harrison and Gino called upon their skills from working in the treatment center to help them create customized healing programs for veterans returning from war. They utilized their teachings to help veterans from ALL cultures regain balance and harmony in their lives. Encouraged by the way those unfamiliar with Native American culture received their teachings, an additional facet was added to the work they do together. With a mutual affinity for horses, they now conduct Traditional Navajo Horse Blessing Ceremonies as well.
Gino Antonio is a Practitioner's Assistant of Traditional Navajo Ceremonies. He, too, is a member of the Navajo Nation, making his home on the Navajo Reservation lands of Arizona. Gino became interested in horses after his elders told him stories about his grandfather's horsemanship skills. He was given the opportunity to learn to ride by his cousin and vividly recalls riding bareback at a full gallop, letting go of the reins with arms outstretched and just being present with the horse at that moment. He says: "His legs were mine and my arms were his wings."
How did the horse healing venture begin?
Harrison and Gino met while working in the Adolescence Care Unit at Fort Defiance Indian Hospital. There, they integrated traditional Native American and western approaches to healing.
A Note from Gino: The horses know the land well and are such an integral link. Horses bring in the spirits with the songs, offerings, and prayers the way strong winds precede a storm and its blessing of sacred rains. With the influence of advancements in this Western world, some of these traditions are being overlooked for the sake of time constraints and costs. This has resulted in less-than-desirable-outcomes for the horse and many other beings. We see this in the wild horse round-ups (often leading to horse slaughter), extinctions of species, aerial shootings of wolves and other mammals, and deplorable living conditions for animals raised for human consumption. We are all negatively affected in some way in this “time of disconnection. With that said, Harrison and I would like to bring awareness to a life filled with harmony and beauty through preserving what was taught to us. It is also our belief that the beauty we all instinctively possess will grow in everyone in attendance at the Horse Blessing Ceremonies. Please visit The Navajo Horse Healing Project on Facebook to find the schedule for the Navajo Horse Healing Project,. In addition, please attend the public talk about their culture and a ceremony for the waters. #80 June—July, 2015 I Healing Springs 11

Thermography, Iodine and Vitamin D
The Under Reported Powerhouses in Breast Cancer Prevention by Patricia Bowden-Luccardi LMT, CNMT, CTT n the largest review of research into lifestyle and breast cancer, the American Institute of Cancer Research estimated that about 40 percent of U.S. breast cancer cases could be prevented if people made wiser lifestyle choices. Preventing breast cancer is far more important and powerful than simply trying to detect it after it has already formed. Our breast might be likened to a canary in the coalmine as they reflect the environmental toxins, estrogen mimickers and nutritional deficiencies that define the toxic times we live in.
I
“Breast Cancer Fund makes a persuasive case that the industrialized worlds increasing reliance on various chemicals in our environment are linked to the current rates of breast cancer incidence.” Says the study “State of the Evidence –The Connection Between Breast Cancer and the Environment.” It is up to you to arm yourself with information so you can control your health. We know of the 40% of what to do not to do’s. Avoid toxic beauty care products, high fat diets, consume organic whole foods, exercise daily, stop smoking, lose weight and eliminate sugar. Avoiding toxic deodorants, underwire bras, charred meats and unfermented soy also support breast health. What are missing are the three big players in breast cancer prevention that your doctor may not be telling you: thermography, iodine and vitamin D. Thermography, the under utilized radiation-free breast health and cancer screening can inform a woman of the health of her breast and the environmental toxic load they carry. Of the 800 published studies in peer-reviewed journals about thermography of the breast alone, show the success rate of breast thermography greater than 90%. The most promising aspect of thermography is its ability to spot anomalies years before mammography.
Why Worry
?
Try Bach Flowers!
Since thermal imaging detects changes at the cellular level, studies suggest that this test can detect activity 8 to 10 years before any other test. This makes it unique in that it affords us the opportunity to view changes before the actual formation of the tumor. Mammographic cancer screening is not to be misconstrued as a form of cancer prevention.

Say the word iodine and physicians automatically think thyroid. While the thyroid is an unquestionable sponge of iodine, and iodine is a key constituent of the thyroid hormone. It has other important physiologic effects, among them maintenance of healthy breast and ovarian tissue and fostering optimal neurocognitive development in babies.

Iodine is a chemical element. The body needs iodine but cannot make it. The needed iodine must come from the diet, yet there is very little iodine in food, unless it has been added during processing, which is now the case with salt. Most of the world’s iodine is found in the ocean, where it is concentrated by sea life, especially seaweed. Know where your seaweed is grown due to radiation

Iodine is a chemical element. The body needs iodine but cannot make it. The needed iodine must come from the diet.... exposure and heavy metals. Iodine consumption has dropped in the US by 50% since the 1970’s as breast cancer rates have risen in the US Goiter Belt. Since the 70’s iodine blocking bromides have been added into our environment exacerbating iodine deficiency. Bromide is also a flame retardant used in carpeting, furniture, mattresses, clothing, computers, iPhones, and automobiles – just to name a few. Food sources can include items like baked goods that contain brominated flour or vegetable oil as well as soft drinks like Mountain Dew and other citrus based sodas Fluoride in drinking water also depletes iodine absorption. As women consume less iodine and excrete more due to toxic elements, our risk for breast cancer grows. “Since the 1960’s” says Dr. Tenpenny, “We’ve known iodine deficiency was related to breast disease including breast cancer. Carcinomas are most likely to develop in the ductal tissues that should normally be concentrating iodine.” There is no way to prove a casual relationship but interesting to note that the growing prevalence of iodine deficiency in the US over the last few decades tracks strongly with the rise in breast cancer.” says Dr. Tenpenny.

Dr. David Brownstein could be called Dr. Iodine for all he's done to inform others of the importance of iodine through interviews and his book Iodine: Why You Need It; Why You Can't Live Without It “Big Pharma has no financial interest in looking at any natural product, including iodine. Does iodine deficiency cause breast cancer? Breast cancer is a multi-factorial illness. However, the evidence linking iodine deficiency to breast cancer is overwhelming. Iodine deficiency may not be the sole cause of the epidemic of breast cancer that is plaguing us today, but, it plays a very large role in this illness,” states Dr. Brownstein The link between iodine consumption and breast cancer is most evident when you compare the Japanese and Western diets against cancer incidence. Japanese women consume a diet high in iodine-rich seaweed, which provides them with an iodine intake 25 times higher than the average American woman. Japanese women also have breast cancer rates roughly one-third of those found in American women, a difference that disappears in Japanese women who immigrate to the US, where they consume considerably less seaweed.

In addition to its obvious role in preventing breast cancer, increased iodine intake may be important in mitigating another common, breast disorder—fibrocystic breast disease or FBD. Fibrocystic breast disease is extremely common and some in the medical field think harmless. It is found in at least 9% of all women who undergo biopsies, though the actual rate is probably much higher. Animal studies have shown that depriving breast tissue of iodine can induce fibrocystic breast disease. From a thermographic standpoint, fibrocystic breast presents with varying degrees of inflammation that can be quantified with an infrared thermal camera.

gen dominance. There are many kinds of estrogen that are not tested in routine hormone profiles. Environmental contaminants known as xeno-estrogens and Bispenol-A (S) attach to receptor sites and mimic biological estrogens that will show up thermographically in this process. As toxins and excessive hormones create heat in the breast, monitoring these heat patterns is an excellent way to promote wellness and see the response to various health approaches and treatments. Iodine has been shown to improve fibrocystic disease. Iodine desensitizes estrogen receptors in the breast and triggers apoptosis in human breast cancer cells or natural cell death, and slows down cell division and reduces blood vessel growth to tumors.
Vitamin D. Optimize your vitamin D, bottom line. Vitamin D influences virtually every cell in your body and is one of natures most potent cancer fighters. Vitamin D is also able to enter cancer cells and trigger natural cell death. Researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington DC discovered a connection between high vitamin D intake and a reduced risk of breast cancer. These findings presented at the American Association for Cancer Research, revealed that increased dosage of the sunshine vitamin were linked to 75% reduction in overall cancer growth and 50% reduction in tumor cases among those already having the disease. Vitamin D supplementation helped control the development and growth of breast cancer, especially with estrogen – sensitive breast cancer. Rochester Medical Center examined vitamin D levels in 155 breast cancer patients in the months before and after surgery. They found suboptimal levels to be highly predictive of the biological markers associated with more aggressive tumors. Remember, if you take high doses of oral vitamin D3 supplements, you also need to increase your vitamin K2 intake, as vitamin D increases the need for K2 to function properly. “Unless you live 20 minutes south of Atlanta, and you are outside totally naked for 15 minutes a day in the sun, you need vitamin D.” says Dr. Mark Hyman. To maintain optimal health we have to think out of the box of mainstream consciences’. Awaken your inner Goddess M by Ma Satprem Yeshe Dolma y name is Satprem. I came to the U.S. in 2012. Prior, I lived, learned and taught for 40 years in India, Nepal and Thailand. I lived in the Ashram of Indian Mystic Osho, whose disciple I am for 35 years. At first I went through much purification in groups which Osho suggested and did daily Meditations. I participated in groups as assistant and learned different skills in courses, till I was ready to give my own workshops and sessions. Later, I learned more in Poonjaji’s Satsang house in Lucknow/India. He arranged further initiations for me and I connected with healers from all over our planet.
Since youth I drove those surrounding me crazy with my view that females were treated as second class citizens. I questioned ‘Hisstory’ and insisted that ‘Her story’ was not written yet. I made my family, teachers and friends aware of how sexist our language is that even school books separated girls and boys in learning directions and goals. I became an actress playing strong woman or classic characters. I needed awareness of the male power from directors and actors, who verbally abused if I didn’t feel charmed by their clap on my behind or even more frank suggestions. I became tired of female actresses standing in line to take my part over…for their paid price. So I studied theology and art to find a place as a teacher, where I could be of value and make life more beautiful for kids and myself. My professors were a Kabbalist and a Gnostic. Their teachings opened my consciousness to a broader view of Western culture where a “woman made out of the rib of Adam” and other strange sto-
ries that influenced society. It was childish to think I could become integrated with the teachers in school, while questioning the existent fundamental system. Most of the teachers were socialist or from a feminist background. I did touch woman’s lib frequently, discovering they wanted to turn the coin and make woman suppressers of men. Same happened at the university with heated communist discussions about helping workers think and act free rather than as owned slaves. I dared to ask; ‘what about the woman of all colors, classes and societies being reduced to ideas of the male in work, participation to form society (in the U.S. woman where allowed to vote 1920. In Switzerland in some Kantons official 1990, in Greece 1952 without the same right as man etc... See the movies “Iron Jawed Angels” and “the Changeling”.) The activists acted with female comrades, girlfriends or wives, same way as bosses with the working class. I put this to discussion which was rejected. So I also left this meeting and became isolated. Later in the Ashrams I noted a more loving and equal behavior from woman to man. Also, Osho’s discourses showed His insights about society were similar to my experience. He respected and supported woman—giving us opportunity in leading positions in the Ashram. I was coordinator for the wild visiting kids and Zen gardens. I participated in woman groups and found sisters struggling with the same ‘problems’ I had faced and much healing happened. Those workshops where not about pointing fingers at one being guilty for a lack of functioning relations with men. Instead, we used several techniques to access our subconscious and see our own participation in the drama. As I understood better myself, I also formed #80 June—July, 2015 I Healing Springs

I recognized the importance of having a moment in my life immortalized in images and the edges Deborah was willing to coax me to. I highly recommend her, not just for her amazing artful photography, but for her ability to capture the essence of a client. Joelle I felt so alive, so one with all, so free, so myself. It was a moment that I usually feel in my practices in glimmers and moments. Instead this was a constant stream of joy and playfulness. I did not even remember I was being photographed. I thought of nothing else but that moment. At one point as I was holding the branches of the tree I felt, this is what embodied freedom feels like. Ann Thank you powerful woman. You unknowingly have given me, through this image, a new inner strength. I imagine you behind me as I face struggles. I see your face in nature and push harder. You are beautiful and perfect. M elle

an understanding for my three left-behind husbands and have now befriended them. I also came to understand the reasons behind society and church’s interest in marriage, where the circle of a slowly formed prison for both gets formed. If a couple doesn’t meet as FREE beings and understand, that the wings of real love can’t be cut nor can love be ensured with contracts…people get broken and bound becoming good functioning slaves for what the elite needs.— obedient, silent workaholics, ready to buy anything told, too exhausted to think, step out or revolt. Before I left for India, I had lived as an artist many years on the famous “Hippy island” Ibiza in Spain. Many artists worked and lived there, known as “woman island”. We were creative Beings going for the call of our hearts. I became vegetarian, got informed about healthy living, learned to bake bread, and live “off the Grid” with petrol lamps, fireplaces, a bathtub outside under a pomegranate tree, water coming from a well, creating pictures and artistic furniture. It was a magical time meeting wonderful human beings and sharing a peaceful lifestyle. The mind was already quietly transformed through studies of ancient teachings in university. I was 30-years-old, fearless and open for a new adventure to nourish me. I had 2 recurring dream visions in early childhood till puberty. In the first “I” was a girl of about 12 years, sitting barefoot on a white horse, holding a torch in my hand to spread some “important news”. I had this dream often, sometimes with a lamp, candle or bright beams in my hand. In the other dream I walked up 108 steps to a very silent place near the blue sky and towards a colorfully painted wooden temple. A bell danced in the winds and made sweet sounds while exotic birds swirled and sang around me. People in maroon robes with bold heads and shining eyes welcomed me IN as their teacher. I had to pull myself away with a heavy heart stating “In this life I HAVE to speak, please don’t tempt me to stay.” I released these dreams to people in maroon dresses (later I came to know they are Osho Sannyasins). They invited me to a 3-week camp with a Tibetan Lama who was expected to teach meditation. I refused, seeing all the rules for participation. After 3 weeks I was invited to the final Puja of the camp. Hearing the word, ALL my body hair stood up, understanding “there is truth for me”. The word PUJA gave the feeling of a sacred, festive celebration and I dressed in a long black woolen robe and put my ancient Travel jewelers from Arab counties on. Coming to the tent of the Puja, I opened it and there was a shock on both sides. Everyone was shaved, in white pajamas while sitting on the ground eating with fingers. I certainly was out of place with my appearance. Hesitant they gave me a bowl with food; I ate and looked around for what could be there for me. I saw two Asian faces shining like the moon, dressed in deep maroon, sitting on a podest. People stood in front, distracting my view and I stood up attracted to those 2 shining lights, reminding me of the dreams and why I was here. Suddenly I stood before the elder (Lama Tubten Yeshe) who kept a paper ready and gave it with a bow. His students surrounded me curious to read the message. I was “existently” in the initial row. The Lama had expected me and gave the name “Yeshe Dolma”. I was told, this is the Prakna Tara, (female Buddha, the green Tara) which the Tibetans await in this century, riding a white horse with a torch in her hands, to rebalance female and male energies. I was in shock and returned to the Lama saying it must be a misunderstanding because I even didn’t do the course. He smiled, and returned the paper with a bow. This was that, very powerful and I still had no insight what had happened that day.…

FourSeasonsNaturalFoods.com Many years later in Kathmandu/Nepal I climbed up to a Tibetan Kopan Monastery like in the dream and found the ashes of Lama Tubten Yeshe there. I meditated till darkness and afterwards was invited from the Abbot. He told me, that I am a Tulku (Reincarnation of a Lama in my case a female Lama)…who has decided out of compassion to come back to the earth plane. Lama Yeshe had sensed those energies “knowing” me from past lives. With all this background, the holistic (holy) circle of body mind and soul is strengthened and harmonized. I am in the U.S. now to share the powerful message of freedom for the female. We have to start at the source of all confusion and blindness in the U.S. because it has the power to teach its surrounding countries Our planet is suffering. Mother earth is strangled and abused. Woman and child trafficking, exposing that most disgusting crimes on humans are real. (The Whistleblower with Rajel Weisz and the book “Half the Sky” from Nicholas D. Kristof/Sheryl WuDunn). We know how to create a paradise for EVERY human being, but keep investing in “war for peace” to explain 70% investigation into a death machinery…the media is creating fear to justify such insanity, while millions have NOTHING to eat. Enough is enough. Since 2012 the world’s energy circle moved from 5125 years of male domination into the energy circle of Aquarian/Pisces “female power” for 5125 years. Its our time to change the world before we destroy it and ourselves. We need to get back to our roots, our female power— trust, surrender, creativity, caring, forgetting, forgiving, compassion, passion, love for life, and unconditional love. There are ways to rekindle this dormant source, but we first have to acknowledge our wounds, allow them to heal in daylight and take responsibility for our behavior.
When males receives females as role models, their inner female can heal and they can be REAL men, not killer machines. We woman have to heal our wounds with the inner and outer male to represent and live REAL womanhood. We need to go into our own power, which IS our Inner Goddess. I have the skills, experience and tools to lead you there. I am delighted to welcome YOU at my workshops and wish, you become a support in this necessity to awaken higher consciousness. Permission to LAND by Cate LaBarre emember asking for permission when you were a kid? “Mom, please let me go to the pajama party, everyone is going, PLEASE!” Remember needing permission slips for class trips? “Please sign my permission slip, PLEASE! I can’t go on the trip without it!”
R
Those were the days. We asked our parents or caregivers for permission to do special things: permission to go out on our first date, the prom or to join a club or team. It seems like we always needed permission slips for something. Sometimes we got permission, sometimes not. Sometimes we ripped up those slips for things we really didn’t want to do and didn’t tell a soul. Suddenly we’re adults. There’s no more permission needed. We can do whatever we want! Sometimes we still seek permission in the form or approval from others for our choices and decisions. “What do you think I should do about x,y,z?” If we are in a relationship, we may defer to our partner. “Whatever you want is fine with me”. Sometimes we are seeking advice of a trusted friend or confidante. Sometimes we are hoping for a compromise or really don’t have a preference. And still other times, for various underlying reasons, we are giving our power away. Recently I had the opportunity to explore how writing permission slips operates in my grown up world. I worked with a coach trained in The Daring Way™, a process based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown. I had read all of Dr. Brown’s books, but having an opportunity to really “work” through a process based on her research was a totally different experience. One of many challenges was the concept of writing permission slips in the form of: “I give myself permission to_____.” I thought: This is silly. Why do I need to give myself permission to do anything? I can DO whatever I want! I THOUGHT I had it all figured out. I take time to rest, play, do fun things as well as fun work things. However I had never really giving myself PERMISSION to do or be these playful, restful, fun things. Sometimes I feel slightly “guilty” if I rest or play at unscheduled or even scheduled moments. If there is enough time left over after my work is done, then I can play. Or I can rest if I am exhausted and just can’t think straight. I know it is important to slow down and appreciate the moment during the hectic pace of life. Everyone knows that by now! Yet I found that giving myself permission, creating moments intentionally, is not so easy. I realized that as I run headlong through life, from one moment to the next, accomplishments checked off my “to do” list, I am doing exactly that! I am running headlong through life— hours, days and weeks flying by practically giving me whiplash! 18 Healing Springs I #80 June—July, 2015
I started writing permission slips, “I give myself permission to _____” I realized that giving myself permission goes much deeper than play and rest time. I noticed ways that I am rigid with myself, reluctant to ask for help. I get frustrated with the time I need to process information, the space I need to process feelings. Worst of all, the annoyance I experience when I make mistakes. And eat chocolate without feeling guilty? Never! How would my life change if I gave myself permission in the areas where I’m hard on myself? I had to give it a try. Writing out permission slips was daunting. Here’s my partial list: I give myself permission to ask questions for clarity and understanding. I give myself permission to NOT know, be confused, and not understand. I give myself permission to be patient with myself. I give myself permission to make mistakes. I give myself permission to ask for help. I give myself permission to show up and do what I say I’m going to do. I give myself permission to: rest; smile more; be silly; laugh at myself; eat chocolate; be hungry; be resilient; be vulnerable; be strong; be scared; be grateful; be weak; accept help; say NO; say YES; take the afternoon off; take a nap; cry; feel joy; paint for the first time in decades; learn new technology; ask for more help with new technology... A direct result of my practice of writing permission slips is that my critical internal chatter that tells me I must do and be more has lessened. I feel calm and peaceful. I’ve noticed that as I practice using permission slips, I feel like I’ve landed in my own life, despite being here all the time! Time HAS slowed down, ever so slightly, and I am more present in each moment. How might your life be different if you gave yourself permission to land gently exactly where you are – to simply be YOURSELF, confident and scared, skilled and incompetent, all at the same time? Imagine if we all wrote permission slips to be our authentic, human, strong, weak, flawed, imperfect, sad and joyful selves. Perhaps this is the journey to living life authentically, or as Brené Brown suggests, wholeheartedly. You are a perfect human being precisely because of your imperfections. You don’t have to earn your worthiness; you don’t need fixing; you are enough! As a life coach and “designated listener” Cate LaBarre supports creative women who are seeking to reach higher levels of inspiration, fulfillment and joy. BTooRead ok Wild Women, Wild Voices: Writing from Your Authentic Wildness By Judy Reeves n her years as a writing coach, Judy Reeves has found twin urges in women: they yearn to reclaim a true nature obscured by traditional roles and to write about, through, and beyond this process. Reeves’s personal experience of this need has informed her most popular workshop and now this workshop in a book. She focuses consecutively on the cycles that make up a woman’s life, from Wild Child, Mother/Sister/Daughter, and Loves and Lovers to explorations of creative work, friendship communities, and how the Wise Woman confronts death. As its name implies, wild voice is untamed and unbounded while holding the possibility of great beauty.

Juice for
kids?
by Kathryn Kos uice and kids seem to go hand in hand. Preschool snacks are accompanied by juice. Picnics and playgroups include juice. So what is so wrong with juice? Juice is a hot topic I am passionate about because even some of the most health conscious people I know still believe juice is okay to give children. It is culturally ingrained that you have orange juice for breakfast and apple juice with lunch. Let me explain the reasons why I feel store bought juice is not necessary and can cause more harm than good.
J
Reason 1: fructose aka sugar: The biggest reason I feel one should avoid giving children juice is the sugar without fiber. Children do not need as much sugar as there is in one cup of juice. One cup of apple juice has approx 22-30 grams of sugar in it. That is more than the recommended sugar for an adult to consume in an entire day. Here is the other thing—there is no fiber to help slow the sugar into the system. When you remove fiber, what is left is sugar. This wreaks havoc on the pancreas and an overworked pancreas leads to insulin resistance. The blood sugar spikes and plummets that accompany this are not fun to deal with, especially with toddlers. Drinking pure juice has an effect that is really no different from chowing a candy bar or slamming a soda.
Why should we should limit fructose consumption?
1used for energy by your body’s cells. It’s therefore not only
Fructose can only be metabolized by the liver and can’t be
completely useless for the body, but is also a toxin in high enough amount because the job of the liver is to get rid of it, mainly by transforming it into fat and sending that fat to our fat cells. Excess fructose damages the liver and leads to insulin resistance in the liver as well as fatty liver disease. In fact, fructose has the same effects on the liver as alcohol (ethanol), which is already well known as a liver toxin. Fructose reacts with proteins and polyunsaturated fats in our bodies 7 times more than glucose. This reaction creates AGEs (Advanced glycation end-products), which are compounds that create oxidative damage in our cells and ultimately lead or contribute to inflammation and a host of chronic diseases. Fructose increases uric acid production, which, in excess, can cause gout, kidney stones and precipitate or aggravate hypertension. While most of your body’s cells can’t use fructose as a source of energy, the bacteria in your gut can, and excess fructose can create gut flora imbalances, promote bacterial overgrowth and promote the growth of pathogenic bacteria. In part because of the damage done to the liver, chronic excess fructose causes dyslipidemia, which means that your blood

lipid markers tend to shift towards numbers that indicate a risk for heart disease Fructose rapidly causes leptin resistance. Leptin is an hormone that controls appetite and metabolism to maintain a normal weight. Leptin resistant people tend to gain fat and become obese really easily. Excess fructose alone can cause all the problems associated with the metabolic syndrome (diabetes, obesity, heart disease. Cancer cells thrive and proliferate very well with fructose as their energy source. Excess fructose also affects brain functioning, especially as it relates to appetite regulation. It has also been shown to impair memory in rats.

Reason 2: no nutrients! Did you know that most of the vitamins in commercial juices are destroyed during pasteurization and factory processing? So the “100%” vitamin C is usually synthetic vitamin C added to the processed juice. There are tons of other real nutrient dense sources of vitamin C including: peppers, broccoli, kale and other dark greens, oranges, strawberries, herbs, kiwi, guava and papaya. If you eat the whole fruit you are getting fiber to help with slowing the sugar into the system. If you eat vegetable sources you are getting even less sugar with your vitamins. Think local and fresh! Reason 3: factory produced/usually old: Conventional orange juice is stored sometimes for over a year, even when it says “fresh squeezed”. According to Food Renegade (www.foodrenegade.com): “Making OJ should be pretty simple. Pick oranges. Squeeze them. Put the juice in a carton and voilà! But actually, there is an important stage in between that is an open secret in the OJ industry. After the oranges are squeezed, the juice is stored in giant holding tanks and, critically, the oxygen is removed from them. That essentially allows the liquid to keep (for up to a year) without spoiling– but that liquid that we think of as orange juice tastes nothing like the Tropicana OJ that comes out of the carton. In fact, it’s quite flavorless. So, the industry uses “flavor packs” to re-flavor the de-oxygenated orange juice: When the juice is stripped of oxygen it is also stripped of flavor providing chemicals. Juice companies therefore hire flavor and fragrance companies, the same ones that formulate perfumes for Dior and Calvin Klein, to engineer flavor packs to add back to the juice to make it taste fresh. Flavor packs aren’t listed as an ingredient on the label because technically they are derived from orange essence and oil. Yet those in the industry will tell you that the flavor packs, whether made for reconstituted or pasteurized orange juice, resemble nothing found in nature. The packs added to juice earmarked for the North American market tend to contain high amounts of ethyl butyrate, a chemical in the fragrance of fresh squeezed orange juice that, juice companies have discovered, Americans favor. Mexicans and Brazilians have a different palate. Flavor packs fabricated for juice geared to these markets therefore highlight different chemicals, the decanals say, or terpene compounds such as valencine. The formulas vary to give a brand’s trademark taste. If you’re discerning you may have noticed Minute Maid has a candy like orange flavor. That’s largely due to the flavor pack Coca-Cola has chosen for it.”

What about juicing at home with a juicer? Juicing at home is quite different for several reasons. You can juice both vegetables and fruits, lowering the amount of fructose in the beverage. You are juicing fresh produce that has not been processed (heat treated, factory treated, pasteurized) so the vitamins and necessary enzymes are still intact (as long as you are consuming right after juicing). I would suggest organic produce as many juicers do not require removing the skins. You do not want chemicals and pesticides in the juice. Many children are picky when it comes to eating veggies, and juicing mostly veggies with a little bit of fruit to sweeten it can help them get those nutrients quickly. Therefore, I think it can be beneficial, especially when you add superfoods like kale, parsley, etc. Keep in mind the fructose load on the body when juicing fruits, as you are removing the fiber. When you juice at home, don’t make a large batch. Juice breaks down pretty quickly. To maximize nutrition (and taste), be sure to make it fresh daily. Befriending Resistance
people have dry periods or hit dead ends. And all creative activity requires practice, skill development, problem solving. These require dedication and discipline. We attend to what is difficult or not so much fun in a creative activity because we love the activity enough, or want the result badly enough to show up for it whether we feel like it or not.
W
And then there are activities related to goals, things we have chosen to do because they are important to us. They could include everything from getting fit, losing weight, getting rid of excess stuff, developing a spiritual practice such as meditation or mindfulness, learning a new skill, getting our finances in order.....the list is endless. Waiting to be in the mood? Hmmnnnn - not usually the best approach to achieving goals. In fact, a measure of how important a goal truly is could be the amount of time and effort we are willing to give it.
This set me thinking about other areas of life in which waiting to be in the mood is not the best way of getting results. If one aspires to write, or draw, or be creative in other ways it is often best to schedule the time and show up for that activity. Some people have so much passion for their chosen creative activity that they can’t wait for their next opportunity. But even these
What works against us being in the mood to do something is often called resistance. Ugh—the R word—evokes images of finger pointing, and feelings of shame. We struggle with resistance. We want the result but we procrastinate, we avoid, we forget. We say we want one thing and do another. Recently someone described to me their huge resistance to exercise: “My body is so sensitive to exercise that I'll lose a couple of pounds from just one session on the elliptical; yet it is as if there is this little kid in me that says NO, no way, I’m NOT doin it!” She scrunched up her face and we both laughed at the comedy in it.
by Wendy Ball hile exploring resources for post-menopausal women who are dealing with lagging sexual desire and issues having sex I discovered a truly excellent book: Naked at Our Age - talking out loud about senior sex, by Joan Price. In it she says: “In order to desire it, do it - and the desire will kick in once you become physiologically aroused. And the more you have pleasurable sex, the more you’ll want to have it. Cool how that works!”

Ron Kurtz, the founder of an approach to therapy that brings mindfulness and loving presence to how we experience emotional issues in our bodies (Hakomi), had an interesting way of dealing with resistance. He would invite his clients not to struggle with it, but rather to explore it by, in a sense, supporting it. He might invite one to listen to the little kid inside. One might find out that inner kid is reacting to a childhood experience of being over controlled with a feisty NO. Resistance for this inner kid is a form of protection. Affirming this inner kid's right to independence might result in a melting of the resistance. Once this inner kid gets it that exercise is “for us to feel good, not because we’re being told to do it” energy and enthusiasm may be released. This is just an example; hopefully you will get the point. The bottom line with resistance from my point of view is to be receptive to what underlies it. If it is about anxiety or fear, then what can help. Perhaps one needs information, or support. Listening to resistance can become the way through. Resistance signals what is missing, what is needed. In this way resistance can be seen as a friend. Back to sex: Joan Price takes a similar approach to lack of desire which can turn in to a total NO for sex. She attends to what is missing or needed such as lubrication, the right kind of stimulation, communication, resolving emotional issues such as resentment. And then she encourages us to schedule time and show up, just like a musician shows up for rehearsal, because she believes the result is worth it.

An Inconvenient Conversation by Angela Kaufman
We need to have a talk.
N
o, we need to have a conversation…there has been plenty of talk but not enough listening. Have you ever had the experience of trying to express how you feel to someone who is unable or unwilling to really hear you? Perhaps they push your message aside as they hurry through their busy day, perhaps they patronize you with placating responses, evidently not really hearing you at all. Perhaps they defensively argue or interrupt before you are finished making your point. Being silenced hurts people, and destroys relationships. In families, if a child is repeatedly told his feelings are unimportant, or wrong, the child will start to act out, yell, misbehave—all forms of communication saying “I will command your attention one way or another”. In a marriage, a wife who feels unheard and invalidated may pursue engagement with her spouse through persistence, or withdraw to find validation elsewhere. An employee who feels unappreciated will lose morale, which will become evident in her productivity and work attitude, even as a surprised boss wonders how the employee could possibly feel unappreciated. In the boss’s eyes, as in the eyes of the aforementioned husband, or parents, there is no reason to be upset or complain. Yet when we aren’t heard, when we aren’t validated, when we are not regarded as having a right to feelings that others are not currently experiencing, relationships shut down. Even worse, they become filled with hostility, resentment and toxicity. And in the end, individuals will find expression for their views, one way or another. This is what we are seeing in Baltimore, and elsewhere in the U.S. We are seeing the end result of conversations that we have been reluctant to have for years, decades, centuries. What conversations should we be having, that we are not?
Power Don’t underestimate the power of a title. Philip Zimbardo experiment proved this back in the 1970’s. As a recap, Zimbardo placed several participants who were evaluated as being well 26 Healing Springs I #80 June—July, 2015
adjusted, psychologically healthy individuals in the fictional role of “prison guard” giving them imaginary power with this title. Then, he watched as their behavior deteriorated in such an extreme way that the experiment needed to be halted early. The participants went beyond following orders and displayed acts of cruelty and aggression that were not consistent with their values or behaviors before being given the imaginary roles of authority. Don’t underestimate the power of power. If it has been established that “regular” everyday people can become willing to act in cruel ways when given the illusion of authority, what checks and balances are placed in the systems in our society in which power is a necessary ingredient? When I worked as a Clinical Social Worker, this type of power balance was employed through the use of clinical supervision, providing myself and my peers the ability to moderate our personal reactions, feelings, judgments, and helping to prevent burn out and associated poor decision making. We are all only human, and succumb to the same flaws—assumptions, fear, and anger to name a few. How would recent current events be different if we as a society were open to conversations about power dynamics, and the real fears, and errors that go along with carrying power? How would the experience of officers, families and communities who have lost loved ones to police shootings be different if conversations involving validation, listening, and apologies were as common as defensiveness, excuse making and evasiveness?
Race Admit it, just the word makes many of us uncomfortable. Our society has been quick to sweep the civil rights movement under the rug as if to say “Ok, you can vote and sit anywhere you want on the bus, now let’s all just move on and forget any of this stuff ever happened.” We tiptoe around the topic, afraid of being misunderstood and labelled a bigot, tripping over ourselves to sound as politically correct as possible, and accomplishing absolutely nothing. It is my suspicion that part of the reason conversations about race are so difficult to have is similar to Al Gore’s position on climate change in his documentary “An Inconvenient Truth”. That if we really acknowledge the scope of the problem, we would have to

acknowledge an issue much bigger, more complicated, and more in need of willingness to change attitudes, than most of us are comfortable thinking about. Like the issue of climate change and the day-late-dollar-short actions most of us are willing to take, we are similarly extending our efforts when it comes to building bridges and healing racial and cultural relationships in America.
It goes a little something like this…. · We will stop throwing our garbage out the car window- we will follow affirmative action and equal opportunity measures. · We are willing to recycle- we will acknowledge that race, color, nationality and culture are no reason to deny others basic human and civil rights. · We will use canvas shopping bags once in a while—we will make friends and be polite and not use words on the Politically Correct “no-no” list. · We will stop letting the faucet run for no reason—we will foster diversity in schools, political office, and workplaces. But stopping deforestation? Walk or ride my bike rather than drive everywhere? Give up my beloved air conditioner? Next you’ll want me to admit that racism is still a real and significant problem in society… Why Don’t We Have these Conversations? There are many reasons...... Defensiveness- when confronted with the reality of modern racism many white Americans, including myself, become uncomfortable because we feel an implied sense of blame, shame or powerlessness. Ironically, these are likely the same feelings
that members of black and other minority communities are feeling when confronted with acts of racism as well. Detachment- it seems too far away. We like to believe that protests are occurring in “other” places that are “less enlightened” and are for those “other” people to deal with. This is not true. Likewise we sometimes want to believe that the communication of these protests is the expression of a few, unimportant, extremists who would be just as likely to carry on about every other little thing like domestic violence, child abuse and the destruction of the Earth…. When we hear people proclaiming “black lives matter”, we are being called to listen to the experience of a community that, regardless of what measures have improved over the decades, are still feeling invalidated, unheard and threatened. I am challenging myself to have more inconvenient conversations. To allow what others need to be said, whether it be regarding race, class, or any other experience. Holding a space does not oblige me to fix, rescue, condemn, judge or even respond at all. It simply requires listening. Can we have this conversation? In Life?
by Allison Petroski e are grateful for this opportunity to be with you this day! Are you feeling the changes? Do you know who you are anymore? Are you surrendering to this time of rapid expansion or trying to control it? There is no right or wrong response here, there are just opportunities for greater levels of ease and awareness. We ask these questions simply to offer space for reflection, for you to take a moment and look within yourself and ask, “How am I showing up in my life?”
W
We wish to further that question by speaking on the topic of selfacceptance. Regardless of how you are showing up in your life, regardless of how you are inflicting upon yourself various self-sabotaging behaviors, most of you possess self-love. Most of you, there are unique cases, but most, love yourself enough that you would defend yourself against a perilous situation or fight to stay alive. Most love yourself enough that you want nice things, and wish to adorn your body in pleasing ways. What so many lack is self acceptance. Self-love is more encompassing and comes from a higher perspective. It unifies all of the aspects of who you are. Self-love incorporates the Higher Self as well as the personality self. Self–acceptance is a process, a state of being, in which you allow yourself to experience all of who you are internally, without judgment. Self-acceptance creates space for you to become aware of those aspects of yourself that are most denied, subconscious, or too fear inducing to acknowledge. You cannot heal or “let-go” of anything if you have not integrated the energy of that part of yourself into your awareness. We do not speak of dwelling in past hurts and old traumas. What We speak of is becoming aware of, and then allowing, those aspects of yourself to be there without judgment or further criticism. From that acceptance the pent up energy that you have been hiding from can be integrated. It is the integration that “releases” energy. Subconscious and denied fears take an extreme amount of energy to maintain control of, whether you are aware of that occurring or not. The fear that you have unintentionally created around specific topics, or past traumas, is what produces blocks and stagnation. That fear manifests as patterns and behaviors that you in some way believe will keep you safe or keep you from repeating those events. You then end up living much of your life in a reactionary state, avoiding the fears and feeling powerless over the patterns and addictions that form in response them. To look at those fears head on shakes the foundation of how you have been identifying to yourself and to your reality. Often it requires for you to take responsibility for how you are showing up in your life, eliminating the space for blame or victim mentality.
Longing for the real? Experience your true nature.
We understand that there are past life events that may have been very traumatic and life altering. And that healing is necessary to move beyond them. But you cannot release or let go of a past experience- you can only identify the fears that you developed from that event or belief system, accept them, and then create new, more conscious thought and behavioral patterns. The acceptance process allows you to neutralize the fears around a particular belief, pattern, or trauma, so that you may have the memory, but not live stuck in unconscious behaviors that developed from that experience.
Modern Shamanic Journeys with Katrina Clay
There is a part of every spiritual journey, when you begin to fully clear yourself out. It is a time focused on healing. It is an important part of the awakening process. As you move out of the phase focused primarily on healing your old wounds, you move into the stage in which, from that integration of energy, you can begin to fully accept yourself as you are. You will recognize that there is nothing that you need to heal, learn, be, or do that will make you more of a divine being than you are in your present moment. All there is left is to accept who you are. Accept yourself as the divine being that you are- inclusive of all things “good” and “bad”. This does not mean the self-discovery ceases. It means that it takes on a new form. Every day life becomes an opportunity for constant self-revelation. You will never cease expanding and discovering yourself- it is not possible in an infinite universe. There is no destination; there is no end point. Self-acceptance is a leap up to a higher level of awareness. As you begin to love and accept yourself, in the glory and messiness of all your humanness, you create space for the soul to be in union with your humanness. Please remember, your soul chose your body, your circumstances, your upbringing, for its highest expression in this lifetime. What other permission slip do you need to accept yourself fully? Blessings to you all on your path to your own personal truth and knowing. Allison Petroski is a spiritual and personal growth enthusiast, with a strong background in the healing arts. Forrest Yoga by Karmen Morales
What is Forrest Yoga?
T
his is a question I’m asked on a daily basis as a Forrest Yoga teacher. I live in a city where I am the only Forrest Yoga teacher, so there is a lot of growth and excitement that comes with being the new kid on the block. Designed by Ana Forrest, Forrest Yoga uses dynamic sequencing to address the physical, mental, and emotional concerns of our current society. It is a Hatha-based practice that also incorporates new and modified poses designed by Ana to address target areas. Forrest Yoga has been such a healing force in my life that I am honored to share it with others. I came to this practice at a time in which my career had flopped, my health was failing, and I was in a deep state of depression. After my first class I was hooked. I remember feeling empowered, hopeful, and exhausted in Savasana – it was the best Yoga class I had ever taken.
If you need a little more convincing, here are some reasons to give this practice a try:
1
Core Work. The core work taught in EVERY Forrest Yoga class is uniquely designed by Ana Forrest. It is unlike any core work you’ve seen. It’s slow burning, methodical, intense, and incredibly mindful. Subtlety is the name of the game with this core work, and while the moves are small, the sensations are deep. In my classes I’ve seen professional athletes tremble and curse through the second rep, while clients with surgeries and extensive injuries are also able to practice the exact same core work taught to the former. This core work is deep because it works low abdominals, mid abdominals, & oblique muscles; while also strengthening the spine, back muscles, and pelvis. It’s slow and methodical as opposed to quick and abrasive. This is by design. This core work teaches the student to develop a loving and keen sense of awareness towards this part of their body, thus the movements are slow, connected, and fueled by their breath. It is also a part of the daily practice because it is very cleansing to the reproductive, digestive, and respiratory organs. This cleanse of the gut, an area that houses our second brain, allows us to make wiser choices - hence the phrase “gut instinct.”
2
The magical assists. The human race is deprived of healthy, healing, and quality touch. As teachers of Forrest Yoga, we are trained by Ana herself to read energy and make assists according to alignment, energy, and instinct. I remember walking out of a Forrest Yoga class once and saying to my friend “that was better than a massage!” There is no pushing or forcing of any kind. The assists are sometimes as simple as a massage of
30
Healing Springs I #80 June—July, 2015
the shoulder, a gentle traction of the neck, or a hand placed on the student’s back encouraging them to breathe into that back portion of their ribs. The assists are also paired with verbal cues so you won’t feel super awkward wondering what the teacher wants you to do. Sometimes all we need is a little physical reminder of a certain body part we may be ignoring in the practice, and there is nothing as soothing as the healing touch of a skilled teacher. Depending on the size of the class, it’s highly likely you will be assisted several times. You will begin to crave theses assists because they are such a heavenly addition to your Yoga practice! P.S. don’t skip Savasana – those are the BEST assists!
3
You live in 2015. There is no denying the beauty of tradition and practicing something that is thousands of years old. We do, however, live in an entirely different culture than those who practiced Yoga thousands of years ago. Ana has created a practice that addresses modern day life and its consequences. Neck and back pain can be seen as epidemics in our society. We also drive in cars and spend lots of our time seated in chairs. In order to counteract the daily stress and compression of the neck, Forrest Yoga encourages the practice of a “relaxed neck” as opposed to the “drishti” commonly practiced in most Yoga styles. The relaxation of the neck encourages your legs and core (the muscles that are bigger and clearly made to support the body) to stabilize the body, and gives the neck a much needed break. Benefits of relaxing your neck in your Yoga practice include a more open passage way for breath and blood to move up and down the spinal cord, and consequently into your brain. Relieving tension in the neck can also improve hearing, shoulder pain, and jaw tension.
4
Every Class is Different. Your Forrest Yoga teacher has been taught to mindfully sequence and prepare a class that will safely guide you into a deep and invigorating practice. There is no script or particular sequence that is practiced daily in Forrest Yoga. Every class will involve some form of core work and seated work, but there is still a lot of variation from class to class because that is the changing nature of life. Furthermore, most Forrest Yoga teachers practice the class they are going to teach you before they ever step foot into the studio. This is to ensure that the class has been safely and adequately sequenced. As a result, you develop a great level of stamina that is complimentary to all your other physical activity. One day you may go deep into the hips, another time you may delve into the hamstrings, and one morning you might experience a
backbend class. There will also be an up-level and a down-level for most poses offered. This makes the class accessible to all levels. (There are even modifications for pregnant students written into the class plan!) With all this work and consideration that goes into planning a sequence, you can rest assured that your teacher has most likely spent 1-3 hours preparing for your class.
5
Getting to know YOU. We live in a very fast paced, go-gogo world. We have email on our smartphones, we can drive and talk on the phone at the same time; we are the kings/queens of multi-tasking. Forrest Yoga is about slowing down (sometimes, more than you want to) and connecting to yourself. There is a very specific theme and intention that is purposefully picked for every class. This is to give the mind ONE thing to connect to for the whole duration of the class. Admittedly, turning inward and holding poses for several deep breaths can be intense. It is through facing discomfort, however, and not by escaping it, that we can learn to navigate intensity with breath. You will discover so many things about yourself through a Forrest Yoga class because the practice encourages the student to delve deep and get curious about everything they feel. And sometimes, you need 3-5 breaths in a pose before you connect to what’s really going on in your body. What’s really interesting, is that what you learn on your mat is a small microcosm of what is going on in your life off your mat. You will experience a pro-active approach to making healing choices, starting by how you treat your body on the Yoga mat. Forrest Yoga is a unique practice because the creator is still alive, and as she evolves, so does the practice. She has used her 40 years of teaching experience, her over 50 years of life experience [chronicled in her autobiography Fierce Medicine], and her healing journey to create a style of Yoga that is strong, mindful, and authentic. What you get from this practice is a raw approach to healing and dealing with life’s ever changing path, brought to you by someone who is deeply in touch with her Spirit. Above all else, Yoga is a practice that teaches us to be open to experiencing and learning new things. Gift yourself the thrilling and exciting opportunity that comes with branching out and trying something new! Karmen Morales is a level 3 certified Forrest Yoga teacher who prefers to be on her Yoga mat than anywhere else in the world. She teaches Yoga in Saratoga Springs, New York, where she lives with her Football Coach husband, and her Yorkie, Floppy. Her purpose is to share this healing practice of Forrest Yoga that has helped her grow, mature, and heal - on a continual basis. Her students range from 77 year old newbies, to 18 year old college athletes, and she credits Forrest Yoga for the ability to address all bodies with mindful sequencing. In addition to teaching and practicing Yoga, Karmen is also an assistant to her teacher, Ana Forrest. You can follow her schedule and look forward to her class themes and projects by following her on facebook:www.facebook.com/karmenyoga or on her website www.karmenyoga.com, or take classes with her online www.mat2mat.com/channels/karmenmorales

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are lib—Marianne Williamson erated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” 38
