Reclaim Your Wild Soul a full-day workshop In this workshop we will open to our wild self through the rhythm of the drum and modern shamanic journeys to How does facilitate one go about atouching their ancient ancient self? Thisof awareness that this new and way beingisn’int rearations the world, In addition, we will; 1. Spend time with Nature. 2. Be with animals (horses) with no agenda. 3. Music. 4. Listen to our body. 5. Let go of what you think we are. “We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals... In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. they are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth.” —Henry Beston

Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you We celebrated my grandmother’s 100th birthday recently. She is in one facility and her boyfriend in another. He reportedly goes to visit every day and they are seen simply holding hands. I can’t help but think that having romance is what keeps them alive. Perhaps romance is not only a sexual liaison but also what one loves deeply and consistently—riding bikes, racing cars, cooking, or staring into the vast ocean. My main romance is with animals, my horse and dog specifically. Also the wild ones that make themselves known to me. Being with them keeps me feeling happy to be alive. It’s not about achievement, getting things done, or having the same opinion. It's the seemingly insignificant moments of pure connection. More of my romances are healing, music and the natural world. In July, I experienced all four combined in a healing ceremony for my horse, Tom, by the Navajo. While Harrison sang traditional Navajo songs that reverberated in my heart, Gino and I worked on putting a poultice made of pine sap, stinging nettles, and a mullen leaf on Tom’s leg. Afterwards, Gino told me I needed to trust myself more, as my horse already does. While that is accurate on one level, on another I already do trust myself. That is until any of my emotional triggers are activated. This situation brought up two things that make me feel small—worry about the potential loss of someone I love—Tom; and letting someone down—Gino. While Gino might say there was no getting it right or wrong, I wanted to be good and do well by him and for Tom. Triggers are not legitimate emotions; instead they are feeling states that create habitual and reflexive responses. Our behavior becomes externalized as we disengage from the moment—something the ego believes will protect against the hurt experienced in a similar situation. This showed when I began asking Gino a ton of questions, in other words abdicating my selfknowledge, presence and responsibility. To counter this coping mechanism means first recognizing the triggers, knowing they point to places that need healing, then facilitating restoration. I am not looking to “fix” myself so that ____(fill in the blank). Instead, I aim to become more true by allowing my essence to rule my behavior. There is no magic pill or technique to keep us present in situations when we are triggered. We each have ways that are best for us as individuals. Something Gino suggested works well for me. At the time, we were on the phone and I started to cry while telling him about Tom’s situation. Gino said “First of all, DO NOT put that sh*t on your horse. Before you go see him, walk amongst the trees, tell them your problems. Offer your issues to the elements and ancestors that still walk the land. Center yourself before you see Tom.” I did what he suggested and felt better instantly. Hence, when I saw Tom in person, I was centered and whole, knowing all was well no matter what the outcome. In this way we do not repress anything, instead allowing expression before letting it go. Although later I was triggered again, the memory of rebalancing was near my surface and easily replicated. As a side note, I am planning to go to the southwest to visit and learn more from Gino and Harrison. With people knowing I went to Zimbabwe to be with lions, a lot has been shared with me about Cecil the lion. We actually spent time in the Hwange National Park where Cecil and family reside. We saw lions there, but only females so I never saw Cecil himself. While I am bewildered why a human would find enjoyment in shooting a majestic animal, I am less outraged than many would assume. Not because of the actual incident but because of the hopeful outcome. Cecil was a 13-year-old lion, nearing the end of his life no matter how he was to die. With the uproar over his death, people have awakened to the lion’s predicament and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to lion research. The big cats are endangered, as their populations have decreased 80-90% over the last 40 years. Trophy hunting is only one reason for this decline. Loss of habitat due to human population growth is another big one. Let us use our emotional response to Cecil’s death as inspiration to look at ourselves and how we contribute to the world, specifically in the ways we don’t admire. While we don’t shoot endangered animals, we may eat meat that has come from despicable conditions or vegetables grown in chemicals halfway around the world or drive long distances in vehicles that use copious amounts of fossil fuels. Once aware of our own less-than-favorable behaviors, let us go into nature and tell her our story. Offer her some tobacco, a sacred herb of North America, and most importantly listen and act on the offerings our mother earth sacredly returns to us. What and where is your romance? Living itself can be a romantic experience. Each of us is in relationship with the animation that makes up our person. We are given the free will to use it in whatever way we choose—on what our souls are in love with or what our egos think will make the greatest impression. Perhaps the best any of us can do while here on earth is to heal disharmony inside ourselves and live true to what feels best in our souls—both personally and globally. In return we will feel trust in, and personal love for, ourselves to which the world will respond in kind.

Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network Upcoming Program The Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network, or SIMEN, has an upcoming program scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 6:30 pm at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry St., in the .Community Room. The program is free and open to the public. No registration is required The name of the program is “The Revolution Will Be Televised,” .and is about why the movement towards an open culture will create the most enlightened, holistic and sustainable society in history The poet Gil Scott-Heron once uttered the famous line, “The Revolution Won’t Be Televised.” But he’s wrong. There’s a revolution occurring, and it is being televised right in front of us. Some call this revolution that’s happening the consciousness revolution, while others call it the quantum revolution. The winds of a deep transformational change are collecting and beginning to reach a tipping point. More people are starting to

see or intuit this: as a dream, as a vision, and as a reality. At first this vision .was considered a mystical experience, encountered by only a chosen few. But now, more and more people are awakening to this experience and insight This is not some pipe dream. It is a world in the making, because more people are awakening to this reality—and it is this awakening that is creating the revolution. This revolution is moving us towards an .open culture, which is a world in which the barriers that hold people from connecting heart to heart and mind to mind are removed, creating a major paradigm shift This revolution is asking us to move towards our own leading edge, and as we do, society and the world will also be led to its own leading edge, creating a synergy in which we become the change we .want to see in the world, and the world becomes the change we want to see in ourselves Join presenter Michael Wayne as he shows what is happening here. The first part of the program will be an interview Dr. Wayne did with John Perkins, author of the best-selling book “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man,”for Dr. Wayne’s Interviews with the Leading Edge video interview series. The second part of the program will be a discussion of the movement towards an open culture, what it is and its .relevancy in our own lives

Edible & Medicinal Wild Plants: Interspecies Telepathic Communication Lets start in the classroom and investigate the scientific research linked to the phenomena of the consciousness and intent of plants! Then we will wander in the field, surrounded by the pulsating life force and being-ness of those around us- including animals, plants, stones, earth, sky, water and more. Whether you connect through spirit or through science, the result is the same- you and all are part of a whole. Lets experiment with ancient experiential communication techniques, used by the ancestors and modern sensitivities alike so we can hear, smell, feel and communicate with our brother, sister and androgynous selves and mirror image beings . If you would like to (not required) bring an instrument and a dowsing tool such as a pendulum to assist in enhancing your sensitivity to the outcry of energetic voices seeking to communicate with you in a mutually beneficial reciprocal exchange. Water Thoughts

In Honor of "Return of the Waters" Centennial of Saratoga's Charter.

by Ellen Kamhi PhD, RN, AHG, AHN-BC ater is truly the underlying basis for all life. I love the quote from Star Trek, when an alien being observes “ Humans are no more than ugly bags of mostly water!” Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but humans truly are bags of mostly water… Water makes up between 75% and 65% water, depending on age, size and weight of an individual. In addition to being the majority of the substance in every cell, Water helps to maintain many bodily functions. It enables swallowing and digesting foods, lubricates all mucous membranes and joints, maintains normal body temperature through perspiration, absorbs nutrients and eliminates wastes. Besides being the real basis of life in a physical sense, water is intimately linked to spiritual principles. Water is used in spiritual ritual, such as baptism in Christianity, bathing in the holy Ganges River in Hinduism, the Mikvah Cleansing Bath in Judaism, among many other examples.

W

In modern times, Dr Glen Rein, the premier researcher on the energetic properties of water used his unique type of expertise to effect changes in the structure of water with Electro-Magnetic fields, thus changing its physical properties and allowing for its application to produce novel, enhanced effects in products for the skin-care industry, among other healing effects. (http://www.innobioteck.com/water-research.html) Water was the basis of an entire chapter in the History of Medicine in the United States and Europe. A group of medical practitioners, referred to as The Physiomedicalists and The Hydropaths, were branches of medicine based on healing modalities referred to as ‘water cures.’ Many personalities were involved in these movement. Alva Curtis was the founder of the Physiomedicalist Philosophy. In 1835, Curtis opened the 'Botanicomedical School and Infirmary' at Columbus, Ohio, which used water cures among its healing procedures. Vincent Priessnitz(1799-1852) was known as The Sponge Doctor. He was born a peasant in in Silesia (now Czech Republic) and never attended medical school , but Priessnitz became one of the most famous healers of all time. He set in motion the forces which would lead to the establishment of hydrotherapy as a legitimate healing medical entity. Priessnitz observed that cattle and

He then developed the the cold water Priessnitz compress therapy by experimenting on his own farming injuries and treating local people in his village. Vincent Priessnitz coined the phrase “ Nothing is impossible to nature, diet, & cold water”. He was arrested several times for practicing medicine, but always acquitted because “he was only using water” Authorities decided to attack him as a sorcerer, and raid his place, looking for drugs, and in frustration, cutting up all his bewitched sponges! However, persecution didn’t embitter him, but only made him more famous. In 1826. he opened his own hydrotherapy institute, with a 45 patient residential capacity which filled instantly! This increased to many institutions with 1600 bed capacity all filled to the brim! Eventually, the Austrian government endorsed his practice and gave him the same status as a medical doctor, building new roads up to his establishments! An important figure in the development of “ water medicine’ was Dr. Sebastian Kneipp (1824-1897). Kneipp was born very poor in Bavaria. He studied weaving but really desired to be a priest. He was very sickly from poor diet and developed tuberculosis. He stumbled upon a book by Hahn (a student of Priessnitz ) about the use of the water cure. After 6 months, he regained his health. Kneipp was ordained as a priest and treated his parishioners with the water cure, becoming known as the cholera vicar. People from all over the world came to be healed by his method of hydrotherapy. Kniepp believed that disease came from deranged blood; water healed by removing toxins restoring normal circulation, and strengthening the body. Kniepp’s student, Bennedict Lust came to the United States in

230 Delaware Ave. Delmar, NY (Geurtze Building)

518-755-8843 1892 , and brought his brand of hydrotherapy to Americans. He also established the first health food store in America, and is known as The Father of American Naturopathy. Lust’s efforts were supported by his wife Louisa Lust, N.D., who was already an esteemed physician before marrying Dr. Lust. She ran the Yungborn Sanitarium in Butler NJ, one of the premiere healing centers in the United States. The use of water as a respected healing modality continues today among Licensed Naturopathic Physicians (ND’s). They are highly training in the long history and evidence based healing effects of the use the use of water as a healing modality, such as colonic irrigation, enemas, contrast hydrotherapy and fever treatments, just to name of few. These time tested ‘drugless’ therapies bring great relief to millions, as they have throughout history. The waters of Saratoga Springs have a long history of applications, both for bathing and internal use, and as we move forward into modern times, they will hopefully once again be respected, protected and revered! With the Body You Have Today by Cara Anaam his article is not meant to explore in depth the theory of Tai Chi or Qi Gong. There are people much more competent than I to do that. My goal is to share the impact the practice of these internal martial arts has made on my health and attitude toward life. I am studying with Mark Tolstrup at The Tai Chi Center, 36 Phila Street, Saratoga Springs. http://www.the-taichi-center.com/home.html

T

Since the first class with Mark Tolstrup at the Tai Chi Center on Phila Street in Saratoga Springs, two principles he articulated have remained touchstones for everything I’ve learned since. First, do the form with the body you have today, not the body you had 20 years ago or even the one you had yesterday before you mowed the lawn. Some days I can lift a leg or bend to touch my toes, others I can’t and that’s ok. Secondly, Mark asked us to be present, not to let our minds wander. That for me is easier said than done, but I find that with practice it is possible, sometimes for a longer period than others and that’s ok. Many of my problems in living and learning stem from not being aware of what my body is doing and able to do right now, in the present moment. I don’t notice for example, where my weight is and that makes it impossible for me to move into a Tai Chi position correctly, or to navigate icy steps safely. When doing a Qi Gong exercise, I start wondering if I left the porch light on at home and totally lose the connection of my action to my breathing. I have a similar problem when I’m looking up a recipe I need now and get sidetracked by an article on the disappearance of sea lion habitat. I’ve been alive for over 75 years now, and in my life have lived with a lot of stress and a lot of joy. My body is not what it was at 10 when I flew around the neighborhood on bike and roller skates. Not even the same as at 40 when I traveled 2 weeks out of every month for my job, sailed, and did an early morning aquabics class every weekday I was in town. And not even the same as at 60 when I regularly took my Long Pond Boat into the Adirondacks on top of my car, before I had a stroke and a heart attack. I feel healthier, happier, and more at peace than ever now, thanks in large part to the Tai Chi and Qi Gong classes I started taking from Mark in 2011. I’m attracted to the underlying Daoist teaching, as I understand it at this moment, that life occurs in the present in deep connection with the life of the universe. The Tai Chi form requires that I sink my energy into the earth and move from that grounded place. Qi Gong teaches me to recognize and embrace the energy flow within me and connect through it to the

energy of the cosmos. It sounds very abstract but I find that taking on a Daoist mindset grounds my understanding in the experience of my own body. What presented itself to my mind as impossible a few years ago, now is thinkable and doable. Both Tai Chi and Qi Gong classes have become indispensable so I found I can make the drive to Saratoga from my home in Fonda twice a week, both day and night, summer and winter. Since the beginning of the year, Mark has expanded the scope of our Short Form Tai Chi class to include instruction in the Tai Chi Sword Form. In the beginning, the idea of all those swords swinging around me completely nonplussed me and I just froze. I still do sometimes but it’s a lot better, and I believe that stretching my idea of the possible enabled me to imagine, find and succeed at a free lance job I would never have attempted before. I like the fact that to keep my commitment to Tai Chi or Qi Gong requires no special equipment. When I’ve been working on the computer and feel my energy waning or my anxiety peaking, I just get up to do all or part of the form. Seasonal QiGong exercises and meditation before bed have become a practice I treasure. Last winter, practicing The Eight Pieces of Brocade helped me keep my body moving and the effects of sunlight deprivation at bay. This summer I’ve done both the Tai Chi form and Qi Gong’s Swimming Dragon in my backyard - when the neighbors are at work. I haven’t tried practicing the Sword Form there since my black lab reads the situation as “she’s playing keep-away with me.” I have found that the long-handled shoehorn I was given when I left stroke rehab makes a great sword stand-in when the room to swing is limited. The repurposing makes me smile.

co-authored by Cate LaBarre llness is an opportunity to look at life differently. You can no longer choose how you got here; what’s done is done. Whatever your healing challenge might be, it is what it is. You have one life, one body, this moment. Your illness or dis-ease is inviting you to do work on many levels, as it did me. No amount of denial, anger, blame, guilt or shame will change that. Your physical and emotional condition is not all of who you are, but it will impact you in a way that feels as though it defines you. If you feel even slightly responsible, believing that you can love yourself through it and heal may seem impossible. Making the choice to steep yourself in the reality of your current “condition” will impact your beliefs, thoughts, feelings and choices. It does not mean you are a victim. It does mean that you are free to make empowering choices from a place of love and being with “what is”. You can choose what to

believe. Know that each and every day you can choose to listen to the fearful voice that will sabotage your self-care or the loving voice of your believing inner healer. You have an opportunity to fully participate in your healing. You’ll make mistakes and you’ll have successes; you’ll have bad days and you’ll have great days. You’ll have days when the fearful saboteur is in control and days when your believing inner healer is guiding you. You’ll discover your own formula of self-love. This is your journey and you get to choose the path. • Believe in awareness, curiosity and presence. You have only this moment. Give yourself the gift of staying present. Be curious as you practice shifting your beliefs about who you are and how you define yourself. • Believe in healthy boundaries. Creating healthy boundaries is essential to healing. Say NO. Having to make excuses later or berating yourself for overcommitting is an energy drain. Notice when, where, how and with whom you feel uplifted or dragged down. “Energy vampires” of all kinds need to be recognized and eliminated. Notice when your own beliefs drain you and your thoughts suck your energy. Say YES to you! Put your YOU appointments in your day planner! Massage, play, friends, fun. This will give you fuel on your journey.

• Believe in acceptance and surrender. Notice if you are plagued with fear of accepting the state of your health, believing the moment you do you’ll go into a downward spiral. Notice if you feel like and believe you are a victim and spend endless hours trying to figure out “why me?” Accept that you can’t change the past. It is what it is. Choose to believe that there is no truth that your past determines your today and tomorrow unless you let it. Surrender doesn’t mean giving up on life and being a victim. It means letting go. When you surrender, you’ll see options and possibilities that are not visible in a state of denial, shame and resistance.

Come visit us at both our unique locations:

• Believe in love and gratitude. Nothing can squelch fear and pain more effectively than love and gratitude. Morning and evening write down five things you’re grateful for. When you find yourself in fear, take a deep breath, believe and practice gratitude. When you hurt, send love to every cell of your precious body. This will shift your perspective from pain and fear to abundance for your many blessings. • Believe in being proactive. Research your illness and become fluent in diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Though you may need to do much of your own inner healing work, you not meant to do it in isolation. Believe in and build a strong support network: health care professionals, therapist, alternative practitioners, counselors, coach.

• Believe in forgiveness and compassion. Forgiving yourself and others for perceived wrongs may be the biggest gift you can give yourself. Even if you are fully aware that your lifestyle and choices were self-destructive, it’s time to give up blame. Even if others have hurt you, release yourself from this toxic energy. Forgiveness does not condone behavior, but simply helps you reclaim your vital energy and move on. You are worthy of your own compassion. • Believe in the gift. At times when you experience a bad day, when the world seems to be crumbling down around you and you feel hopeless, ask for the gift in your experience. Let go of the expectation that life “should” be different. What do you now know because of where you are on your healing journey? Allowing today’s gift into your life will diminish your distress.

• Believe in speaking your truth. Believe that it is essential to communicate clearly and truthfully from your heart. This doesn’t mean dumping on others, but delivering communication that by withholding would drag you down or ultimately hurt the relationship. • Believe in trusted confidantes. Share your health challenge with only those who are strong enough to hear the truth and those you know you can trust to hold your heart gently and with empathy. Hearing your news may make your loved one feel afraid, vulnerable and uncomfortable. Hold their hearts gently and with empathy as well. • Believe in your higher power, grace and miracles. Perhaps nothing gets in the way of healing more than believing that you are alone. Having faith that there is a powerful, loving force outside yourself, a power bigger than your ego can comprehend, a power that will support you on your healing journey. This allows you to be humble and experience beginner’s mind. “Not knowing”, turning it over to your higher power, invites new insight and miracles into your life. When you fall in love with your higher power and trust your divine connection, you will know in the core of your being that you are worthy and loveable. You will trust that your choices are for your highest good. • Believe in movement, play, creativity, laughter, joy and rest. Healing can feel like hard work. Give yourself a break. Every day! You don’t need to earn joy, rest and play. Believe that you can move your body with ease. Believe in the healing power of laughter, no matter how serious your “condition”. Believe in joy as a limitless commodity and not to be saved up until you are “healed”. • Believe in stillness. Allow a quiet environment. Turn off everything. Then listen to your believing inner healer, the part of you that’s connected with the divine, your higher power and the healing power of the universe. • Believe in “I”llness to “We”llness. You are unique and you are not. You are no less and no more than another. You truly are one with all that is. Believe that the most healing thing you can do for yourself is to heal in community. Ask for help. Offer help in service to others. Share your passion. Share your light. Feeding vs Fighting

a Buddhist/Shamanic healing practice by Wendy Ball ome of us will remember coming of age during the 60's when the prevailing slogan among hippies was “make love not war.” What ever happened to that manifesto? We became preoccupied with the increasingly fast paced and complex challenges of living. Almost 1/2 a century after the first moon landing many of us know no better way to deal with emotional disturbance than to push it away out of sight, just to have it return, sometimes predictably, sometimes when we least expect it.

S

However, today we can benefit from a great deal of new information about how trauma impacts us and what we can do about it. Greater numbers of people are opting for healthier lifestyles. We can choose from an ever expanding range of strategies for experiencing more happiness and harmony in our lives. Among these is a fascinating strategy for dealing negative emotions, destructive patterns, even physical issues, being taught by Lama Tsultrim Allione, America's first Buddhist nun and founder of the Tara Mandala Buddhist Retreat Center in Colorado. She calls it demon feeding. It is based on a practice developed by an 11th century Buddhist nun called Chod and is widely practiced by Buddhists. Lama Tsultrim's modern adaptation of Chod offers a highly effective if unconventional way for anyone and everyone to make friends and allies out of the things that disturb, create tension, and drain energy.

So how does it work? Lama Tsultrim invites us to think of anything that drains energy: emotional issues, fears, physical issues, depression, anxiety...as demons. She invites us to locate how it feels in our body, and where. She invites us to describe it's color, size, texture... She then invites us to project this out, visualizing our discomfort or our issue as a demon, noticing how it looks in detail, it's character, it's emotional state, the look in its eyes. She invites us to ask this projection what it wants, what it really needs, and how it will feel if it gets what it really needs. We then physically step into the place where we projected the demon, embody it, and answer the quesions. As the demon we might say something like: "I want to control you." What I really need is to feel O.K." If I get what I need I'll feel safe. Now for the weird part. We are invited step back into our self and to imagine that our bodies can magically produce a nectar comprised of, e.g., safety, in unlimited quantities and to feed our demon with this nectar until it is completely satisfied. While doing this we may notice our demon shapeshifting. It may become something completely different. Once completely satisfied we ask what remains if it is our ally. If the demon has simply disappeared during feeding we invite an ally to step forward. Seems strange to feed a demon and meet an ally as a result? Consider this: what we push away and that feels so powerful can become a source of strength when embraced and integrated. What creates such fear in us that we

push away can become a source of courage and compassion when we embrace and integrate it. Not convinced? Perhaps it is one of those "you have to be there" things. So back to the ally: What does it look like, shape, color, etc. We ask: what can you do for me? What do you pledge? How can I access you? We then embody the ally, feel ourselves as the ally, and answer these questions. It might say something like: "I'm here to remind you that you are lovable. I pledge to find a way to send the pink energy of self acceptance your way whenever you are feeling shut down. You can access me by connecting with something pink In her book: Feed Your Demons, Lama Tsultrim gives a precise structure for the demon feeding practice which she emphasizes must be followed closely for it to be most effective. I have to say, having done the process myself that it is a magical and very moving experience. There is no better way to experience the fact that the things we find disturbing carry within them great gifts, and that pushing away what bothers us not only ultimately creates trouble: depression, obsession, phobias....but consumes energy that we need to survive and thrive in our lives. Wendy Ball has a private therapy practice in Albany NY where she facilitates demon feeding, provides shamanic healing interventions such as illumination, extraction, soul and destiny retrieval, teaches mindfulness, and facilitates clients in the development of emotional resilience skills.

USING THE RAINBOW OF COLORS by Arlene DeAngelus t is amazing to discover that a correlation of the colors between Astrology, Numerology and the Aura is lacking. Astrologers do not agree on the colors represented by each planet anymore than numerologists agree on which colors are represented by each number. Clairvoyants, however, see the colors of the auras as they are projected even though interpretations of the aura colors may vary.

An aura is an energy field that surrounds and interpenetrates every physical body. The aura is oval in shape and contains an array of colors which can be seen by many clairvoyants. The Prana Aura, or etheric body, extends from one to three inches from the physical body. The Finer Aura extends about three feet beyond the physical body in an oval-like shape. One does not have to be a clairvoyant to see auras. Anyone can see them with practice and patience. Many who are not psychically developed see and use auras regularly. Try practicing on yourself by looking into a mirror while standing in front of a white background. After several tries, slight color will be seen surrounding the head area. Another technique for seeing auras is to close the eyes and visualize the person who’s aura you wish to see. The subconscious mind sees and is aware of auras even if your conscious mind cannot see it. The aura and its color is then transferred to the conscious mind. Auras depict health, emotions and well-being. Colors of the aura

can be changed through visualization and seeing oneself in a large oval of the desired color. This is called "wrapping" oneself in the color. Each rainbow color has its own quality when seen in an aura. The projected colors should always be in their truest, lightest and clearest shade. The darker shades of color take on negativity when seen or interpreting. Projecting red into the aura gives vitality and energy. It will instantly give a feeling of strength and can be used during athletics, exercising or to relieve general tiredness. Wrapping the aura in red when confronted by someone who is overbearing or aggressive gives one a sense of strength causing the aggressor to back away. Red is the only color that both astrology and numerology agree as to its interpretation. It is represented by Mars, the planet of initiation and action. In the aura, red gives the energy needed to pursue the desired actions. A variation of red is pink, which represents love. A clairvoyant can see pink in the aura of a person in love. Pink can be used positively on oneself or others. Instead of feeling resentment for another, project pink into his or her aura. Through projecting love, any negativity in the situation is being reversed. The color yellow rules the mind and the intellect. When watching a lecturer, one often sees yellow surrounding the head area of the speaker. A lecturer can also use yellow as a com¬munication aid. Projecting yellow into the aura gives a sharpness to the intellect. Many students study and take exams in a clear, yellow aura. Green is the color of healing and must be projected in a clear, apple green. The use of green in the healing arts for oneself or others is extremely beneficial. It can be used with absent healing and laying-on-of-hands techniques through visualizing the person in need of healing and seeing green emanating from the per-

son’s physical body. If a particular area of the body is in need of healing, visualize a laser beam of bright green directed to the affected area. In addition, project the warmth and well-being of the green healing energy. The calming, cooling effect is achieved through the color of blue. After a busy day, projecting blue into the aura can be most relaxing. Projecting blue into the aura at night is also useful in eliminating insomnia. Sleeping problems can be eased through changing the colors in the bedroom. Red or yellow is not conducive to falling asleep. Blue can also be used to combat hypertension. Light violet is used by psychics for meditation and is the color of spirituality and a high vibrational influence. Wrapping the aura in a light violet allows one to reach the highest planes during meditation. The highest vibration is that of Christ’s White Light, or some people refer to it as the White Light of Protection. If impending danger is sensed, immediately project the White Light into the aura. It is a source of complete protection. White is the highest and purest of the colors and can be used whenever there is uncertainty about which color to use. White is a combination of all color in the universe and is available for all to use as needed. Adjusting Your Circadian R H Y T H M to the Fall by Kathryn Kos leep is just as important for our health as nutrition and exercise. Culturally we tend value work over sleep. However, quality sleep can make a huge difference in the quality of the work you produce! Sleep affects every aspect of our lives and should be taken more seriously. Lack of sleep affects our mental health, our emotions, and our physical performance as well.

S

During the summer we get plenty of sunshine, and sunshine helps to produce quality melatonin, a hormone that helps to induce sleep. During the long days of summer we fall into a “summer rhythm” with our sleep. Come fall, the days start getting shorter and we get less daylight. How can we adjust our internal clock to ease into the darkness and still get sound, quality sleep? Your circadian rhythm is a 24 hour built-in biological clock. Sunlight exposure triggers the body’s hypothalamus to start producing hormones to regulate this internal clock. One such hormone (the most powerful for sleep) is melatonin. Without sunlight, we don’t produce adequate melatonin. The best time of day to get sunlight and regulate the internal clock is early in the morning. During the summer it’s easy to go out and get sunshine (yes, cloudy days count too). Getting up early and going for a walk outside is a great way to get better sleep at night!

During the winter months it’s not as easy to get adequate sunlight during the day. However, it’s just as important! Try to get outside when you can, even if it means bundling up and going for a brisk walk daily. If you work in an office, try to work by a sunny window. Increase your sun exposure by getting outdoors as much as possible. Cloudy days count as well! You still get melatonin-producing rays on cloudy days.

What are some other ways to help ease into sleep? Magnesium is important mineral to help ease us into sleep. According to Shawn Stevenson in his book 21 Proven Ways to Sleep Your Way to a Better Body, Better Health, and Bigger Success: “Magnesium is a bonafide anti-stress mineral. It helps to balance blood sugar, optimize circulation and blood pressure, relax tense muscles, reduce pain, and calm the nervous system. Yet, because it has so many functions, it tends to get depleted by our bodies rather fast.” Stevenson suggests the best form of magnesium for easing into a good slumber is transdermal magnesium. dermally, the magnesium is able to go directly from the skin into the bloodstream. However, when taken internally, a large portion of magnesium is lost during the digestive process. Reduce screen time before bed Although we need sunshine during the day, we need darkness in the evening. However, in this technological age we are constantly viewing screens in the evening. We spend time our evening ours on cell phone screens, television screens, computer screens, and even reading our books on screens. Blue light from these screens tricks our bodies into staying awake, and this makes it difficult to get quality sleep. What are some ways to counteract blue light? Limit the use of any such screens for two hours preceding bedtime. Instead, get into a routine of taking a warm bath, reading a book, or doing some gentle stretching. If you do need to be on a screen before bed, you can wear special blue light blocking glasses or even blue light blocking screen covers. When you are ready to sleep, make sure the room you sleep in as dark as possible. You may need to use black out curtains if you are in a well-lit area. Avoid the use of nightlights as any light can interfere with your precious sleep cycle. Remember getting quality sleep is a priority. As we move starts shorter days be sure to get out in the sunshine and let your body produce melatonin! Eat magnesium rich foods, and be sure to ease into a bedtime routine that does not involve blue light. Happy sleeping!

P

Ask the ractitioner

In a research abstract on Healing, Thomas Egnew in 2005 (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) spoke of the shift in medicine by physicians from healing of the sick to curers of disease. Could each of you clarify your understanding of the holistic nature of healing as you practice it, and the difference between curing disease and healing.

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell I feel that I should disclose that this citation was one that I came across recently and used at the recent Healing Springs conference. The reference led to some questions from the audience, so I wanted to give the opportunity for my colleagues to address it. Cure is a reductionist view of disease manifestations by the human body. It identifies only the manifestations and possible pathological causes from the biology and or the physiology of the individual. It is limited by the tests that are done and the available drugs that treat the given condition. The general view of cure is that, if the disease manifestation (symptoms) has gone away, the disease is gone. But where did the energy of that disease go? Even science tells us that energy cannot be destroyed. It can however be transmuted or rebalanced. What in the individual's constitution allow this manifestation to occur. When I work with someone, I am interested in their entire story, even their family history. That may include such attitudes and sensations as to what makes them happy, sad, angry, or frustrated. It usually includes how they feel when they are confronted with those feelings, even their attitude about being out of balance, whether mentally, emotionally, or physically. Their beliefs are also part of the picture that I look toward. Their spiritual outlook, whether they meditate or pray, (and I don't mean in a conventional sense) can be important. Where so ever we place our intention will manifest in our reality. Even the language that is used by my clients will become a part of the overall picture of their state of harmony or imbalance. Connections between events in their past to their present illness can be part of my assessment. Desires, environmental influences, etc. also can influence the path of rebalancing. It is often disregarded, but something like vaccination can lower the person's vitality and ability to respond to disturbances that might present in their life. Artificially provoking the immune response to diseases is not homeopathy, so analogies to that protocol are misguided. Homeopathy is the art and science of addressing imbalances that have found their way into the vitality of the individual, and seeks to assist the body, mind, and spirit to re-establish that balance by supporting the natural intelli22 Healing Springs I #81 August/September, 2015

gence to regain its footing. Medicine today operates on a model of fear of disease, controlling, and eradicating it. To that end we have created ever more virulent diseases. Healing does not view the natural world as something to be controlled, and views the human as capable of living fully and harmoniously with the rest of nature, provided that we use discernment and respect. I use a number of modalities to accomplish that, beyond just homeopathy. Sometimes hypnosis is the most direct path, sometimes it will be a combination of 2 or 3 different ones. Sometimes I refer my clients to additional practitioners. Why? Because healing is more than fixing a flat tire. It is assessing the whole, listening deeply to a person seeking my help. More than any other skill, the ability to listen deeply, to as much of what is said, as what is not. Listening to what is stirred within me is likewise of importance. While I hesitate to refer myself as a healer, it is the philosophy to which I aspire, and it is the energy behind that way that I use the tools at my disposal. I am ever cognizant of my limitations, but I am also aware that I have been gifted through Spirit to use these gifts for all who come and seek assistance. Is that healing or cure? Either way, the individual is the receiver and their journey is supported. Jerome M Pindell uses Homeopathy, Hypnosis, Jin Shin Jyutsu and spiritual counseling to assist his clients. He is a poet whose first book: Training Tracks, poems by implosion, is available through Amazon. He has offices in Clifton Park, Niskayuna, and NYC. Homeopathy; Claudia Ascione All disease processes have a profound purpose at their root. Diseases and troubling symptoms are necessary for the evolution of the individual. I don’t primarily seek to eliminate or cure a symptom. My orientation is to provide a receptive field of awareness through which the complex interplay of physical, mental, emotional , genetic and karmic influences become more conscious and apparent. Once brought into clear view, some helpful strategies can be suggested. Often, an imbalance will be the motivator to change destructive lifestyle patterns or at least will encourage an examination of lifestyle choices and beliefs. As a homeopathic consultant I will suggest homeopathic remedies or use energy protocols like Jin Shin Jyutsu or hypnosis to encourage a deeper revelation of the underlying dynamic causes. Then, over time, symptoms can lessen in a gentle, gradual way. As awareness increases, acceptance increases and the healing process becomes reverential and sacred because it’s fulfilling the growth pattern of the soul. I remember years ago listening to a lecture at an ashram. People came with cancer and sat before the guru and pleaded “Please, please cure my cancer”. The guru just gave a blessing and said “Keep chanting and praying”. Healing is like that, it is the journey, the process, the pilgrimage and allows the subtleties of

We innately know how to heal. If you cut yourself, it will heal without any intervention. It may heal faster, better with help from outside but if you are healthy, it will heal well. For me, the difference between healing and curing is that curing implies that someone or something from outside mustmake you better. A doctor, a medication, even the nutritional supplements now implies that our bodies do not know how to keep us alive and intervention is necessary. We think we have to do something and just let healing happen. On TV you see commercials for all kinds of medications to prevent & cure illness but little is mentioned about being healthy. We wait in fear and hope that the right doctor or intervention will be there to "fight" the illness. It is something we have no control over and health is totally unrelated to needing to be cured. “Healthy” has heal in it. If you support your body with good, nourishing food, fresh air, activity and contentment as we were designed to do, we will be healthy. This does not mean illness will never find us and support from the outside may be needed at a time to encourage our bodies to heal, but it is still up to our bodies to do the healing. It does not mean that we can't be healthy even with an illness. Healthy means treating your body well ever day. As a practitioner, my role is to support and encourage the body to be healthy. This is best before a healing crisis occurs and healthy to me is about mind, body and spirit being harmonious in a challenging world. 518-229-9149,

Life has nothing to do with what you are doing, and everything to do with what you are being. Be careful not to get caught in the "doingness" of your life. That is not what you are here for. You are a sacred soul, and you came here to the earth to Be something. And not just one thing, but many things. The wonderful thing is, you get to choose what that is. And you get to do that right now. Always Right Now. So what do you choose to Be right now? Happy? Content? Safe? Peace? Forgiving? Compassionate? Love? Go ahead, choose. As many as you wish! — Neale Donald Walsch

"When we say we are seeking happiness what we really mean is, we will be happy when we get everything we want. Many seek happiness by wanting the world to conform to their desires. Unfortunately life is not built like that. This is the ego s way of being happy. It never works." — Brett Jones
