Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you. Earlier this year, I was close to many trees as they toppled over, falling to the ground. Some were obviously old and many looked completely healthy. Some fell during storms and others didn’t have obvious outside influence before falling. It was a recurring theme that I couldn’t help but take note of and contemplate. Perhaps it was telling me something. About a month ago, I was at Uncommon Grounds, Saratoga’s best coffee shop, and went blank, fell to the ground and hit my face hard. Having no memory of it, I was told later what happened and it was described as though I fell like a tree. Hmmm….. Was I emulating the trees, or did they try to warn me what was coming? What most interests me about the ‘coincidence’ is the reminder of how symbiotic life is. It’s easy to forget this, since we live separated from the natural world in buildings with temperature controls etc. Meanwhile, the organism called earth, which humans, plants, trees and animals are all parts of, is living as a whole. Where do we get our oxygen but the trees? What holds us to the planet but gravity? What waters our gardens but rain? What helps our bodies create Vitamin D but the Sun? Thich Nhat Hahn says it well; “We need to change our way of thinking and seeing things. We need to realize that the Earth is not just our environment. The Earth is not something outside of us. Breathing with mindfulness and contemplating your body, you realize that you are the Earth. You realize that your consciousness is also the consciousness of the Earth. Look around you—what you see is not your environment, it is you.” Today, I went for a walk on a trail that I’ve been doing for 20 years. It is not one we do every day, so it’d been awhile since I was last on it. At the bottom of this trail is a group of 7 maples that I call the 7 Sisters. They have shared wisdom with me, which you in turn have heard through my written word. Today, after passing the “Sisters” I got to the top of the hill and was shocked to find 100s of trees cut down. Many even blocked the trail. It felt like a newly created gravesite. “Coincidentally,” prior to this walk, my heart was heavy. I had slept until 10am, which is abnormal. While I did so because of exhaustion, it was accompanied by feelings of incredible sadness—as though grieving something unknown. When I saw the disruption of the forest and felt their despondency, part of the reason became clear. Trees have been proven to have social networks, they help each other grow and warn of danger. Like all families after tragedy, the network will rebuild. Yet, that humans rarely take the whole into consideration when cutting trees down shows a lack of understanding or empathy, which says a lot about modern life. While I try to stay positive, there is much heartbreak in the world. For me, much of it stems from how artificial the modern way of being is. It unsettles me at a deep soul level. I can go about my business, but there is always unrest with a tinge disappointment.

Photo of Sitting Bull from Google images.

For a week or longer (and periodically for years) I have felt the presence of Sitting Bull. Sitting Bull was a Lakota Indian Chief who led his people during years of resistance to the United States government. It was under his leadership that the Sioux tribes united in their struggle to survive on the North American Great Plains. Is his presence with me in spirit or simply an archetype, I know not. What I do know is that I grieve along with the great Chief for the loss of a way of life. The trees falling nearby me earlier in the year, were doing so at the “hands” of nature. Those I came across today fell at the machines of man. That difference is painful for me. Today, the trees were scattered on the ground like the Indians after the Wounded Knee Massacre, which took place a couple weeks after Sitting Bull’s death and exactly 128 years ago on the day I write this.

You do not need me to tell you that we live in an artificial society. And yet, maybe you do. Perhaps not personally, but as part of the whole. People seem to value that which man has created, over that which was here long before us. We would do well to examine our priorities and see where we take the path of convenience and comfort rather than acting in alignment with our values. Let us not beat ourselves up over it, but do pay attention to our actions. For instance, how much plastic are you using? How much gas do you waste or electricity—anything that runs on fossil fuels? Are you spending time on things you “should” over what you love? As already mentioned, my heart aches lately. Some reasons have to do with me, most of which are to do with the big picture— such as what the trees represented. Still other facets come from and for the ancestors that walked this continent in times gone by. Perhaps I am able to help all by allowing it to pass through and release. Even if not, it feels like what I need to do for now. I hesitated to write about this, not wanting to hear how to ‘fix' this state of being. It is for me to move through, allow, merge and transmute when it has had its time. Until then, I pray—for the trees, the humans and all of LIFE. To close, here is an excerpt from Chief Seattle’s letter to the government; “This we know: The earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood which unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.” photo by Deborah Neary

A Case for Reiki Standardization H by Suzanne Golub ave you noticed how many people these days practice Reiki? Reiki went from being a fairly obscure practice that only those in the holistic field were familiar with, to a practice that is fairly widespread. Some people learn Reiki for their own self-healing; some learn to open a healing practice and work on others; and some are called to teach. As a Reiki Master Teacher, who has been practicing for over twenty years, I have witnessed the growth and change in the field. Traditional Usui Reiki involves three levels- Level One is for those who wish to work on themselves and to know how to offer healing for friends and family; Level Two is for those who wish to be able to get paid to work on clients; and Level Three is Master Teacher, for those that are committed to teaching Reiki. We all have energy inside of us, and the ability to tap into that energy for healing. But without proper instruction, support, practice, and Reiki attunements passed on directly from a Reiki Master Teacher, we may be ill prepared for a practice that requires understanding, compassion, and true commitment. Reiki is not just about hand positions or wanting to heal, it’s about connecting with the Divine, connecting with yourself, coming from a place of love and compassion, and committing to a lifestyle of kindness, tolerance and healing. If you have a

10

Healing Springs I #101 I Winter, 2019

negative view of the world, if you carry your own stress, hurts, or anger with you, if you have unresolved emotional or physical issues, you will not be a clear channel for energy to pass t h r o u g h . Spending time working on yourself is vital before you can work on anyone else. The Reiki way asks you to commit to a lifestyle of non-violence, compassion towards others, and understanding. Letting go of ego, judgement, and negative perspectives are all important parts of creating a foundation for channeling healing energy. I recently had a student come to me for a review and re-attunement who had been certified in both Reiki I and Reiki II. Each of the classes that she had taken were three hours long. And as

we began to review, it became obvious to both of us that the majority of material she needed to learn had never been taught. She had to start all over again. After working with her, I began to think about how it has become commonplace to offer “quickie” Reiki certification courses. In a world where we are overloaded and overwhelmed, we are tuned to seek out instant gratification. I can understand how it would be attractive to be certified after only a three-hour class. In fact, it has become common to offer weekends where you are certified in both Reiki I and II, “Advanced Reiki,” a level that doesn’t exist in traditional Reiki, Master classes for those who don’t wish to teach (also not traditionally part of Reiki), and even online classes. These types of classes do not offer the in-depth training, practice and support that is needed to become a Reiki practitioner. I have met quite a few people that have been certified, but never practiced, because they did not have the confidence in themselves after receiving insufficient training. Reiki began as an oral tradition. Because it can only be passed down from a Reiki Master Teacher, and there is often interpretation of the history and symbols, there has never been a standardization of how to teach Reiki. Reiki cannot be taught in three hours or in one day. Learning the history, principles, ethics, and process creates the foundation for understanding what Reiki is, how the system works, and being able to intelligently comprehend it and explain it to others. Reiki I covers a wide range of information that must be studied, assimilated and practiced. Reiki I certification involves receiving four attunements that raise your energy vibration and open your healing chakras. Traditional Usui Reiki requires that there should be at least one month between Reiki I and II, and there is good reason for that. The body needs time to adjust to the higher energy frequencies. That time is also necessary to study and practice Reiki on yourself regularly. It not only helps you understand the concepts and the process, it helps you remember hand positions and gain confidence in your abilities, and it’s necessary to clear yourself of any issues that would interfere with your being a clear channel to work on someone else. If you have not spent the time studying and practicing before you offer your services to others, you will find yourself drained, challenged in situations you are not prepared for, and your clients will not receive the true Reiki experience that they expected and paid for.

When you have been practicing Reiki for 5, 10, or 15 years, you develop a deep understanding of the practice, probably develop your own style, and it comes very naturally. But for those that are just learning, it’s important that your teacher doesn’t take any shortcuts and shares all the knowledge that you will need to have a full understanding of the Reiki system. You must learn and master the full system first.

Unwind... let healing begin.

I believe that creating a standardized course of study for Reiki is the only way to ensure that everyone who makes the investment in learning is receiving the same information. And while teaching styles may differ, it is vital that all Reiki courses cover all the necessary foundational information to prepare practitioners. A Reiki certification course should include every aspect of

the Reiki system: from the history of Reiki, how Reiki works, the Reiki Healing Principles, Reiki ethics, understanding and locating Chakras, how to balance Chakras, what attunements are, to how to do a full self-healing, how to do a full healing on others, and much more. There should not be any information omitted or left out. Courses should also include ample time for students to practice both on themselves and on others. Advancing from Reiki I to Reiki II is for those who intend to work on others as clients. It is advisable to proceed after at least a month of self-Reiki practice. Reiki II involves a more advanced understanding and connection both with Divine energy and with the client. You must be able to tune in and connect with the person’s energy to assess where blockages are. In Reiki II, you learn the sacred confidential symbols that activate the energy. Again, this requires a commitment to study and practice, and cannot be rushed. Becoming a Reiki Master Teacher is a deep commitment. When you decide to follow that path, you are choosing to teach and pass on the art of Reiki. But before you can become a Reiki Master Teacher, you should have years of practice, you should be living the Reiki lifestyle, and you should have a strong spiritual connection. Finding the right Reiki Master Teacher to study with is very important. This cannot be learned in a weekend course or online. Becoming a Reiki Master Teacher takes time to hone your skills, to unlock your healing abilities and your intuition. When I was studying to become a Reiki Master Teacher, I followed an intense practice of giving four one hour sessions a week, and receiving Reiki once a month. I had to read many books, write essays, create guided meditations, and spend time meditating and connecting with my guides. Over the course of six months, my energy became stronger and more powerful than I ever imagined. The more I practiced, the stronger it became, and the more my intuition opened up. I became the true healer that was inside of me. I had a nurturing and supportive teacher, who was also demanding and strict. And she guided me to become the healer and teacher that I am today. I could never have learned what she taught me in a weekend, or online. If you decide that you want to follow the Reiki path, shop around for the right Reiki Master Teacher—someone who is experienced, who teaches a comprehensive course, who gives the right number of attunements for each level, and who offers ample opportunity to practice and study. Be clear about the commitment you are making. Do the work—study and practice. Anyone can learn Reiki, but not all Reiki courses are equal. Until we have standardized Reiki courses, be sure you are investing in a course where you will get the best training possible. And if you have taken a course where you did not get proper training, don’t hesitate to start again with the right teacher. Suzanne Golub is a Reiki Master Teacher and runs Shaanti Energy Healing. Hawaiian Energetics by Joan Reid awaiian Energetics is an energy treatment. It was created with the ancient Hawaiian traditions originally used by the medical Kahuna. They believed that we have 3 bodies and when working with them, can help a person be healthier. These bodies are the physical, etheric, and astral.

H

The ancient Hawaiians used the qualities of the elements Fire, Water, Air, and Earth to relieve pain, stress, and help to bring balance to those they worked with. The elements are the building blocks of the physical realities we exist in. All of creation is comprised of various forms and combination of these elemental energies. As the qualities and strengths of the elements interplay with the spiritual aspects of the universe, the formations of our lives develop. Our continued healthy functioning is regulated by these same universal forces. The kahuna of Hawaii have a timeless understanding and respect for these universal laws. Hawaiian Energetics provides a way of healing, living, and understanding the world around us in a deep and connected way. Because it is based in the ancient living and healing ways of Hawaii, Hawaiian Energetics assists seekers of aloha, of healing, and those who want to develop skills, a way to find that connection with the environment and society. Living, relating, and breathing with ease is a divine right we all share and can provide for each other.

You choose what to pay, weekly or monthly. 25% of the total collected will be donated to a different cause each month.

Contact Jennifer Monroe for more information at 956-2818 or just drop in. I have been studying Hawaiian Energetics for 15 years and give treatments in my office. Those of you who know about Reiki understand energy healing. I am also a Reiki/Master teacher. I believe that both modalities are wonderful when it comes to alleviating discomfort and bringing more equilibrium to clients. There is a difference between Hawaiian Energetics and Reiki. Hawaiian Energetics can work with more specific issues using the qualities of the elements on organs, bones, muscles, etc. as well as the whole body. I will be teaching a Hawaiian Energetic Initial Class in April. My Teacher Ed “Kaleolani” Spenser will be visiting and offering a more advanced class. These trainings will teach participants about the Hawaiian view of the world and about each element. People will learn how to generate and direct the elements, and their uses in a treatment. Participants will also experience the effects of the elements on different parts of their body, and how there can be life changing healing experiences. This class is good for individual growth as well as adding to ones “tool box” of modalities to help others. For more information about this healing modality go to www.kekumu.com. Contact Joan Reid if you are interested in taking any of these classes; jmreid@roadrunner.com. A testimonial by Judy Mirczak who experienced Hawaiian Energetics; “I would highly recommend this energy work. As an energy worker of several different modalities I could feel energy flowing through me. I was also aware of the three separate energies of the three different people who worked on me. The real power of the session came several hours later when I realized that a personal perception I had carried was gone. This new level of awareness has changed my being. I actually feel lighter and more positive about life. Thanks to Joan for providing this offering.” Healing Springs I #101 I Winter, 2019

A Mindful Look at Sexual Aggression by Dineen Carta am a Spiritual Life Coach and an Energy Healer and have experienced countless sexual improprieties in my 52 years, but in this article, I will focus on two.

The shame turned into self-blame. Surely, I did something, said something, that led to this. I questioned every action and word, from that moment back. It began an identity crisis that would last 10 years. I never spoke to anyone about it.

The first occurred in my twenties at the hands of a woman, my best friend, as she grappled with her sexual identity by assaulting me. It was totally out of the blue. I loved her, as you do a best friend – told her often she was beautiful, complimented her clothes and supported her positive attributes. Then one day, she grabbed me, kissed me and held me in a way that was impossible to free myself from. She violated me.

So, my mid-20’s became my mid-30’s, and during that time I lived inside the doubt. I became depressed, anxious, clinically so. I withdrew from connecting with others. 10 years this went on, until I opened up to a family member, who didn’t shame me further and I began to heal.

I

The second experience was 30 years later, when I met a new client via Skype. As is common, technology issues occurred and my client’s video was not working. But, since the audio was, we began the session. When the video suddenly went on, my client, a male, was masturbating in full sight. Again, this constitutes sexual aggression and violation. In both cases, I was traumatized. I want to share the stages that a survivor of sexual aggression may go through. The first is shock. In both cases, there was an elevated heart rate, heightened adrenalin, and a desperate attempt to find grounding in a situation that unearthed my expectation and sense of reality. My mind could not assimilate what was happening, yet, my body was having reactions related to fight, flight and freeze. The second thing that occurred in both cases, was that I felt a responsibility to the other person. One was my friend; one was my client. I felt they didn’t know what they were doing. They couldn’t, could they? But, in fact, they could and my brain and heart could not connect the dots. I felt compassion for them. The third thing that happened was the desire to flee, coupled with a desire to preserve propriety and not offend the offender. In both cases I feared for my safety. Even as bad as things were, if I angered them, it could get worse. The next phase was the search to regulate my body. My heart beat madly and my mind tried to solve its state. I sought grounding. I walked for 3 hours with little reduction in my body’s signals of danger and shock. The next stage, and the one that follows, are what keep most people from reporting… the body’s corresponding unexpected, unwanted physiological response of arousal. Yes, you read that right – arousal. When I was 22, I couldn’t understand why my body responded to a sexual touch regardless of whether I wanted it or not. At that time, the arousal to a sexual violation sent me down the road of self-doubt, which led me to the next stage—shame. 14 Healing Springs I #101 I Winter, 2019

20 years followed of therapy, meditation, yoga and spiritual practice. The trauma and neurosis actually opened the door to this path in deep way. Contrast this earlier event, to the incident of the client via Skype just 3 weeks ago. The stages were similar, except for the selfdoubt and shame. I felt the arousal as I had in my 20’s, as memories surfaced later that day, but this time I was able to shine the light of presence on them. I felt angry that I had unwanted images in my head that were causing my body to feel sexually aroused. How dare you, I thought, have this control over me! I stayed present to these feelings and realized the naturalness of this bodily response. I began to have compassion for myself and waited for the feelings to subside, though I resented them. When remembering the shame of my 20’s I had another level of compassion for my lack of self-love at that time. The next thing I began to do was seek people I trusted to share my experience. I began with my therapist. This was different from my 20-year old self who held it all in. When I began to share with my female friends, I found an unexpected dimension to the problem of sexual aggression. One friend began analyzing my response, questioning my handling of it and boundaries. Another said that I keep “attracting” these experiences and that I should build an energetic shield around myself to prevent more. The fault with both these well-meaning approaches were that they blamed me for what had happened. In both cases, in my moment of vulnerable sharing and seeking of support, my women friends focused on my behavior, not his. In both cases, I found myself not only uncomforted, but a need to defend myself. Not only were the comments unhelpful, they failed to acknowledge the weight and reality of my pain. Therein lies the cultural dynamic. Even as women, we scrutinize the victim, when it’s the perpetrator’s behavior that needs to be under the microscope. It seems the shame and blame of ourselves is systemically inborn in women. That is what patriarchy is about. We blame ourselves for our faults. We reject our very selves. Then, we project that fault onto other women. It’s internalized self-loathing, self-doubt, shame, and the inner belief that we are not worthy. It is the belief that rejection and everything painful that happens to us is our fault because we are, at our core, unlovable.

After becoming angered at having to defend myself to my friends, I sought an energy healer and allowed myself “to be held” and release. I was seen, heard and supported, right where I was. What came next was grieving. I grieved for myself, for women, for victims, for the lack of understanding, for the illness of the people who take power-over others, for shaming, for blaming, for the pain of our unconscious humanity. I cried many days. Then, I got my boot straps on and talked to my friends about how they shifted the blame to me. I am happy to say they received it and the conversation opened all of us. We need to wake up from this paradigm of self-hatred and turn it into compassion. When you love yourself, no one can shame you. We need compassion for the perpetrators, even while we move for change. We must remember that patriarchy hurts men too. They are conditioned from the day they are born to bury what we have called their feminine qualities—like compassion, nurturing, inclusivity, sharing, and the outward expression of tenderness, love etc. The sublimation of all these qualities can manifest in behaviors from the subtle dismissal of, to the violence against, women. Consider this, in the cases of my assaults both people were trying to attain something that they didn’t feel they could openly express. So, behaviors popped out of the container in aggressive ways. What if men’s dominance in sexual aggression is not about their hatred of the feminine but their unconscious love and loss of it in themselves. Perhaps it’s a combination of the rejection of it and the love of it, that culminates in an act of sexual impropriety.

Perhaps, what is really required is a deeper love and understanding of ourselves, which opens our deeper love and understanding of others. If we love ourselves, we would come to a place where we would not reject any aspect of ourselves. Perhaps, qualities aren’t masculine or feminine, but just human and also divine. Let me be clear, I am not condoning violence or the terrible happenings in our world right now. I am suggesting that this isn’t a war between men and women. The work is not against a system or society, it is against the internalized misogyny within ourselves. No matter your gender, are you rejecting the feminine qualities within yourself? Are you burying your authentically complex nature? It comes down to realizing all this brokenness heals within the crucible of Self-Love. Water Movement Fear, Wisdom and the Deep Ocean of the Individual: The Water Movement of the Chinese Five “Elements

Befriending Animals as a Spiritual Practice

Christopher R. Reilly hat happens to you when you sit quietly and look out onto a horizon filled with ocean? A clear mountain stream, or a favorite lake when no one else is around? There is something majestic and deeply soothing about water that it can be so still and calm, but in constant motion. The depths of the sea can draw us into the depths of ourselves, and a fast moving stream can remind us of how effortless the movement of life can be when it is simply following its way, like water following the gravity and curves of its landscape. These very same intuitions and connections have been made for centuries, and those ancient sages that formulated the Five Movement (sometimes called Five Element) philosophy studied this in detail when considering the Water Movement.

W

Lessons of the Seasons In the changing of the seasons, the Water Movement is associated the winter. In the fall we had the inward movement of what matters most to our lives, and the letting go of more exterior concerns. In the winter we have the full transition to our depths. Take a walk in the frozen woods of New York in January and you can feel that stillness. Nature is meditating upon herself before arising again to explore the outward world of spring. As a part of nature, the Five Movement philosophy advises us to embrace stillness and introspection in our lives during the winter months. It is a perfect time for deep meditations using a very soft focus on effortless awareness, rather than actively moving a lot of energy around.

Lessons of the Body In our physical bodies, the water movement is associated with the healthy elimination of fluid waste and urination. No real headscratcher there! The water element is also in charge of the underlying vitality of our reproductive system, as well as our bones, bone marrow, brain and joints. These processes, including structural stability and the ability to reproduce, are very deep and fundamental to who we are as physical beings. Keeping the water

Barbara Allen Intuitive/Psychic Consultations Clear and Accurate Guidance 518-409-5081 In Person, by phone and more element in good health and conserving its vital presence in our lives is very important in both short term health and the process of aging. This includes managing our sleep, choosing valuable nutrients in our diet, proper hydration, not pushing ourselves so far that we are pulling from our reserves, and the pursuit of wisdom over excitement or trends. A steady and smooth flow. Lessons of the Spirit The water movement is characterized by inward and downward movement that goes to the very depths. When we are moving with it, we are operating from a place of calmness akin to quiet wisdom and contentment, with the resonant quality of deep power. When in balance, it is the quiet presence of one who is following the way of their life without resistance or internal strife, combined with the vigor of will found in the understanding and acceptance of that fact. It is not just the calm depths of our inner world, it is the power and stability that can arise from such a place, particularly when it is well preserved and cared for. It is the calmness that allows us to act from compassion and inner strength rather than knee-jerk or unconscious responses. The negative emotion of the Water Movement is fear. Fear is the concept that we may not survive; that our well-being is in danger; or that it will be if a certain action or event takes place. When fear is operating as it should, it gives rise to positive action toward survival and thriving. When fear lingers or overwhelms, it leads to the nearly opposite effect of mental paralysis, or “freezing up.” This is frozen water—vitality and vigor that has been locked down and restrained due to our response to real or imagined circumstances. Frozen water cannot irrigate fields, relieve thirst, or moisten tissue. It is not “bad water,” it is just locked up in a way that prevents it from nourishing its environment. If warmed and thawed by love

and inspiration, it becomes free and productive once again. This highlights a central relationship between the water of the kidneys and the fire of the heart. Heart fire (sincere and honest connection with self, others, and nature; love) warms the kidney water to keep it flowing. Kidney water cools the heart fire to prevent it from flaring and turning into mania or anxiety. This central pivot within us links the most fundamental aspect of our being (the inner peace and virility of Water), with the most elevated aspect (the connection with nature and each other represented by Fire). Lessons of the Ages The Water Movement is the gift of effortless motion, or stillness within motion along a natural path, as well as a sense of peaceful depth and virility. It tends toward the inward and downward directions, and relates to very deep physical processes including reproduction and skeletal structure. We can experience it within during deep meditation. We can experience it when sitting at peace by a body of water; and we can experience it in the quiet, low thrum that speaks to itself deep in the woods of a northeastern winter. With the cold months coming upon us now, try taking the time to “go with the flow” this season, and enjoy the inward movement of reflection. Like the ancients, perhaps you too will discover why Water, more than any other of the Five “Elements,” has been associated with an ideal that we treasure today here in the West: wisdom. Ph y sical F itness & YOU by Deborah Dittner Want some good news? Of course…who doesn’t?

hysical fitness will help you to feel younger and live longer. Regular exercise will put you at a lower risk of dying from a variety of causes. And… fitness will improve your sleep, prevent weight gain, decrease your risk of high blood pressure, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and depression and anxiety. Physical fitness doesn’t have to be super strenuous to gain results. Moderate activities 5 to 6 times a week can lead to improved and lasting health benefits. Moving at a moderate intensity for at least 30 minutes most days of the week, and at least twice a week incorporating aerobic exercise (cardio) with weightbearing activities to strengthen all muscle groups should be practiced. The number one reason that most people say they don’t exercise is a lack of time. I hear ya! We’re all crazy busy but incorporating even short bouts of movement into your schedule will be beneficial. Cardiovascular disease can be reduced

by adding brief segments of 10-minutes into your day. For example, park your car at the farthest end of the parking lot at work and walk in. If your job has elevators, take the stairs. Instead of sitting at your desk eating lunch, take it outside to walk in the park then sit on a bench to enjoy your meal, get some Vitamin D, and fresh air as well. Set your specific fitness goals and be realistic. Startup gradually. Don’t set out to run a 10K road race in a month when you haven’t run in years. You need to build strength and endurance. Starting out too quickly can sometimes lead to injury which will sideline you even longer causing frustration. Maybe actually set your goals on a 5K walk/run road race in a couple months. Consider scheduling your fitness plans right into your daily planner. By putting this in writing into your schedule, you will be more likely to complete it. Take into account that obstacles may come into play and have a plan B to either do something else that day involving movement, make up the time or add it to your next session. An excellent way to make sure fitness becomes a part of your life is to work out

with a friend. You will have each other to push along the way on those days that you “just don’t feel like it” or it’s “too cold outside”. Motivating each other is also more fun as you see each other gain strength and endurance. Sticking to your new fitness routine can be challenging so you’ll want to vary your exercise. There are a variety of activities to choose from such as walking, running, swimming, HIIT, cardio, yoga, and so many more. Even going outside with your kids and playing soccer. If you’re not sure what you could or should do for fitness, consider a trainer. This doesn’t need to be long term but just to get your started, learn proper technique and achieve goals. And, of course, if you haven’t exercised in many years, check with your health care provider to make sure it’s a go. Joining a gym or health club may also help to motivate you on your quest. Already have equipment at home? Hop on that stationary bike, treadmill, stair climber, ski machine, or rowing machine. Not in the budget? Remember using a hula-hoop or jump rope as a child? Those are very reasonably priced, a ton of fun and even a good laugh at the beginning. Is mobility an issue? Consider chair yoga. It’s often said to make any habit stick you need to incorporate your the program into your life for 90 days. Maintaining a fitness routine will come as easy as brushing your teeth and sleeping for 7-9 hours nightly. You can do it!!! One step at a time will lead to many rewards in the future. Shadow Healing bringing loving presence to what is hidden by Wendy Ball utting painful experience behind us and moving on is one of the sacred cows of our culture. But the memories and the thoughts, feelings and impulses associated with them lie hidden within us. When they are activated we often react with destructive emotions and compulsive or addictive behavior. Attempts to control and change ourselves ends in failure and leaves us feeling unworthy.

P

After years of training and practice in supporting people in their healing process I have come to a place where I feel the one essential ingredient to healing and personal change is loving presence. Loving presence is the act of allowing ones attention to be with and stay with what is mentally and emotionally disturbing in an unconditionally loving way. This is very elusive for most people. We have been taught to judge ourselves. We learn what is acceptable and what is not. We do what we can to get away from disturbing emotions. Our nervous systems are structured to separate us from awareness of overwhelmingly painful or disturbing experience or memory through dissociation. On one hand, you could say we leave and go somewhere else in our minds. On the other hand you could say what is painful and disturbing becomes hidden. But along with what is hidden are the rich depths of wisdom and emotional intelligence that are the best part of being human. Shamans call this soul loss. We become shallow. We lose our spark. We become stuck in survival behavior driven by fear and anger. To make a choice to do nothing when fear and/or anger are activated, rather to be still, to listen to this disturbed self sympathetically, neither judging or justifying, simply being with - this takes a kind of presence of mind and courage that needs to be cultivated. To resist trying to get away from what feels disturbing creates internal pressure and if you can simply stay with yourself in open acceptance you may experience a kind of melting. I call this emotional alchemy. The energy of disturbance is transmuted into empathy and other heart connected emotions. Some of you will have experienced this. There is a kind of surrender in choosing not to turn your back on what’s emotionally painful that takes real strength, not the strength to fight, but the strength to say: I will stay with this as I will stay with one I love and not abandon them in a difficult time. This is loving presence. And this is what I know to be the core of healing. Once the knack of “staying with” is learned and once one knows that “staying with” can be survived, then one can begin a process of re-integrating all that we have hidden to become whole and real. And we can retrieve vital energy that has been lost to us: joy, creativity, mischief, humor, wisdom, power...the full spec-

Taking the Taboo Out of Tarot by Sarah van Rijsewijk everal days ago I got in touch with a good friend from my Middle School days. We began catching up via text message and she asked me what I was up to. I mentioned my love of reading Tarot and she was very intrigued. I was thrilled with her optimistic response. There is often a mixture of emotion that comes up when Tarot is the conversation topic. It is my hope that more and more people understand the real world value of this unique communication method!

S

Sometimes I think If I had a dollar for every time someone scoffed at the idea of a Tarot reading and said “Ha! I don’t want to know my future!!”... well I’d be in pretty good shape financially! Often I tell clients my disclaimer, that I am not a fortune teller. That is not what Tarot is. Tarot is a form of communication, a form of storytelling and a way for people to receive validation and perspective. The cards are beautiful illustrations, varying by the artist and are full of deep meaning. My job is to give life to the cards and what is trying to be communicated through them. When I sit to give a reading, I need nothing. I don’t need to know who you are, where you are in life, or what you want to know about.

I don’t even need you to be in the room! Many years ago I read cards for a family member several hours away. I sat down with my deck, shuffled and read what I pulled. I then sat at my keyboard and typed him up a 3 page long email with his card interpretation. He is a man of logic and he was floored with the accuracy. It happens often. Tarot is a language. And just like all languages, you begin to understand how to speak it more fluently with practice. If you have the patience to sit and learn what is trying to come out in each card, if you can reflect on the real world meaning and help people see that it is not “woowoo” then you can do it. I thoroughly enjoy talking with people. I enjoy seeing the common thread that runs through us all. I think that because of my Healing Springs I #101 I Winter, 2019

own life experiences I am able to understand where people are coming from and add another layer to what may not be clear to them. For years I have stood firm that what comes out most profound in a reading is validation. All of us want to be validated, we want to be heard and understood. That is a basic human desire and it’s incredibly important. When the cards are turned, what happens more often than not is a strong realization that you are not alone, that your questions are heard, that your desire for understanding and help is all recognized. In my early days learning Tarot I would often ask for answers, flipping card after card over wondering why they were all so vague. Tarot does not tell you what to do. It prompts you to understand what you ARE doing, what you are creating in your life and how you will move forward and make your own decisions. We are creating results, and at any time you can change what you’re creating. Your decisions have cumulatively gotten you to the place you are in today and it’s your job to continue deciding where you want to go in the future. If you sit down with cards in hand you will get a clear snapshot of where you are, how you’re feeling and where you’re likely headed based on the now. The cards are not going to tell you ‘marry this guy’, ‘quit your job’, ‘start a new business’ or ‘sell your house’. They will provide validation, and perspective. YOU decide what they are referring to and take action based on what you understand from the reading. Tarot is not magic and it is not fortune telling. It is a language, a form of communication and understanding. So many of us have no idea why the things in our life are happening the way they are. When I sit down to do a reading, the main intention is for clarity. I want my client to understand themself deeper when they walk away. I want them to see how their choices have gotten them up to where they are. I want them to feel empowered with their next decision and to see that their needs are just as important as the next persons. We are all here on this planet together. The more people who feel clarity and validation, the better! It is my hope that people understand the intention with a Tarot reading. That it is a way to help… a way to move forward with clarity and confidence. I hope that the ‘fortune telling’ stigma start to fade into the background as more and more people sit and receive the real world validation that they are hoping for. We are all entitled to making strong decisions. Through the cards and the communication of a skilled reader we can embrace the wonderful clarity that Tarot is and remove the taboo together. Your Journey with Reiki by Linda McCann ur Universe is comprised of energy down to the microcosmic level. Every thing is vibrating and has an energetic signature. All this energy is intertwined on the micro and macro cosmic level. If you affect one level you affect all levels universally. A change takes place.

work will be done on the back. When finished the practitioner will probably touch your shoulder and indicate that you can sit up. They will recommend drinking a lot of water to flush any toxicity and offer another appointment if indicated. That is entirely up to you. Pay attention over the next several days and see what, if anything happens. How do you feel?

Reiki is an energy method brought to light and taught by Dr. Usui in 1922. Since that time, the practice has grown across the earth. The Reiki practitioner does not massage but they do place hands on whomever or whatever they are working on. They also have the ability at Level II to “send” Reiki energy to past, present & future without being physically present. Can you change the past? No, however you can change the emotion of it. This sending, if the Client is in another place is called “remote healing”. Healing is left up to the body. Our body is a wonderful machine and if destressed can commence to heal itself. A Reiki practitioner can never “claim” to heal – they are an assistant in the process of allowing your body to heal on its own through de-stressing.

Dis-ease in the body is caused by stress, genetics, our thought processes and what we ingest. In our fast paced world this mini vacation during the Reiki treatment can make a huge difference especially if ongoing sessions are chosen by you.

O

If you have heard (or not) of Reiki, you may wonder what happens at the appointment? The “Client” would lie on a table or sit in a massage chair and the Reiki practitioner would show and tell the Client what will happen. Once the treatment begins both parties would remain quiet and relaxed. Usually there is soft music, you will be made comfortable with pillows, blankets and whatever is necessary so you are ready to begin this journey. You will close your eyes. The practitioner has already done some work to open the channel to the energy and would begin by placing their hands on or near your face, head and neck initially. This allows you to go into a semi-trance state. You may feel warmth or coolness depending on you and the practitioner. A session lasts anywhere from 30-60 minutes. Mid-session you would, unless unable or unwilling, turn over and some more

There are four levels of practitioner. Level I – IV. Level IV practitioners are Reiki Masters and are able to teach. They have dedicated the time and money to achieve this. That being said anyone is able to do a treatment after Level I. On each level more energy becomes available. Take your first step on this path and look forward to a deep level of relaxation and perhaps becoming healthier. Are Your Thoughts Derailing Your Resilience? An excerpt from “Resilience” by Linda Graham Everyone knows what it’s like to be knocked off center, to lose their inner sense of balance and groundedness, at least temporarily, when faced with life’s unwanted curve balls. Whether it’s a troubling health diagnosis, the death of a loved one, a serious car accident, a layoff, or a natural disaster, life can intensely challenge our resilience. In Resilience: Powerful Practices for Bouncing Back from Disappointment, Difficulty, and Even Disaster (New World Library, October 2, 2018), author and psychotherapist Linda Graham, MFT, guides readers step by step through a process of cultivating more well-being in their lives by strengthening their resilience so that they can respond skillfully to any upset or catastrophe that would derail that well-being. We hope you’ll enjoy this excerpt from the book.

S

ometimes your thoughts can drive you crazy, blocking clear thinking and impeding response flexibility. Sometimes your thoughts trigger further thoughts, evaluations, judgments, and condemnations that reduce your resilience. These thought patterns are ways of filtering reality that can be counterproductive. You can learn to work mindfully with your thoughts, and with all the amazing, creative, dazzling constructs of your default network mode, especially when those constructs turn dark or constricting, so that you can also experience their coming and going. Even your deeply held beliefs about the truth of the way things are can shift. And you can come to understand the processes of your brain that create, install, and defend those constructs to the death.

Here’s a list of common thought processes that human beings use to filter their experience.

1

Assumptions: We learn from past experience, and based on that experience we sometimes think we know more than we know. We filter our perceptions of reality through those assumptions rather than seeing clearly what is actually true or needed now. Projections: We assume that what we have learned is true for ourselves is true for other people as well. We project our assumptions onto them, usually without their knowledge or permission, abandoning theory of mind.

2 3

Objectification: We lose the sense of ourselves or another person as an active agent of changing experience. Instead we see ourselves (and others) as an object, a thing, an “It” at the 24 Healing Springs I #101 I Winter, 2019

mercy of external events and other people’s choices, powerless to change our experience (or our responses to it).

4

Mind reading: We presume we know what another person is thinking, feeling, or needing without empathically checking with them. Or we may presume that the other person already knows what we think or need without bothering to tell them directly: “If you loved me, you would know how I feel.”

5

Discounting the positive: We fail to register positive traits in ourselves or in others, belittling ourselves, devaluing others, and deflecting or neglecting appreciation in either direction.

6

Overgeneralizing: We may exaggerate attributes of an experience, perceiving things as global and pervasive, applying to everything and everybody; we see things as “always” or “never.” We may take things personally whether or not that’s true or relevant, seeing things as permanent and unchanging. (This overgeneralizing is known as the three Ps: pervasive, personal, permanent.)

7

Catastrophizing: We may immediately assume the worst: if we sneeze, we assume we’re catching a cold, which means missing work for three weeks, which means losing the job, which means losing our home — from sniffle to disaster in less than three seconds.

8

Black-and-white thinking: We see everything in categorical terms, with no shades of gray, few options, and no possibilities of compromise. This rigidity in thinking, which can lead to a serious derailing of response flexibility, is also known as neural cement. Inability to disconfirm: We are so rigid in our opinions that no new information can change them.

9

You may recognize similar patterns in your thinking.

EXERCISE: Identifying Thought Processes That Derail Resilience Review the list above. Identify any of these patterns you recognize as operational in you or in people you know, without attaching any shame or blame. For now, simply acknowledge any patterns you identify that you might want to rewire later.

1

2 3

Pick one pattern relevant to you that you’re willing to investigate; it need not be the one that is most difficult for you.

Track this pattern in your thinking for a week. Notice when this pattern is operating in your thinking; notice when it’s not.

Join the community, connect with your ancient self katrina@healingspringsjournal.com to receive event messages Becoming aware of your common patterns of perceiving and responding, and acknowledging them in your conscious awareness, is essential if you want to rewire them. Steadying your awareness with more and more difficult objects of awareness is reflective resilience. Mental constructs can be very stable and long-lasting, more like the climate you live in than the weather that changes from day to day. Emotions that might flit through your awareness in a matter of minutes or half a day (weather) can settle into a longer-lasting mood (climate). The moods we deem negative — depression, discouragement, despair — are the ones we’re more likely to notice and want to shift than the lighter-hearted moods of joy or contentment. As human beings, we adopt roles, preferences, priorities, and goals that filter our perceptions and shape our responses over long periods of time. We prioritize family over work, or work over family, based on deeply held values and convictions. We construct entire philosophies of living, belief systems, and identities that filter our perceptions and response to reality. Formulating values to live by is part of resilience: they are part of a moral compass that guides our life choices. But locking ourselves into values that cannot be changed in response to new experiences is not resilient. At this stage of new conditioning, you’re simply training your awareness to realize that any thought is a product of the processes of your brain, and thus any thought can change. Entire patterns of thought, no matter how complex, can change. Roles, preference, priorities, and even entire belief systems can change over time — and they do.
