Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you Music has been one of my loving companions throughout life. As I kid it was camp songs around the fire. In high school I spent more afternoons with my record player than with other humans or doing homework. When CDs were born, I joined BMG Music Group—receiving monthly music as if it was a gift from the universe. As an adult, my preference is to go see live music and dance with abandon. Yet, since my school days in band, I had never involved myself in making music. Then in a conversation about seeking passion, I mentioned that if I could play any instrument it would be my own voice. My friend, who was struggling to find any excitement said something like “lucky you to know what you want.” The truth was by ‘passion’ I meant something to be infallibly great at, and singing was doubtfully that. But my friend’s statement gave me the fortitude to follow through with the idea. So at home alone with my dog, I gave singing a try. When Bella got up and left the room, I decided to contact a professional singer/songwriter friend. As fate would have it, she had just decided to coach people and I signed up. Abridging the story, last night I was at an open mic to sing. It was not my first one, and I had already surpassed the nerves of singing in front of an audience. However, last night there was so much talent, it felt more like the finals of ‘American Idol’. Then there was me, who prior to last year was too embarrassed or self conscious to even sing in the shower. As I sat listening to people play and sing songs they had written themselves, I was washed over with feelings of inadequacy. This feeling is not new; rather it has followed me throughout life. I have tried to outrun its discomfort, mostly by exiting any race all together. Yet, to be truly authentic and continually grow and expand, I have to move through the vulnerability of feeling unworthy based on a supposed lack of talent. Doing so empowers my soul, while giving up perpetuates the negativity. So, last night I stayed and sang my set. When I got on the mic, I told everyone what was going on saying; “Tonight’s musical talent has been so extraordinary, I had to write myself a letter about how we are all on our own musical journey. It doesn’t matter where we are on that voyage, it only matters that we keep taking steps rather than dropping out along the way.” This could be said for any path. My first song was new to me, my breath was constrained and my voice shaky. I’d like to report that my second song sounded perfect. However, I so lost myself in the song—giving it all I had without holding back—that I have no idea what it sounded like. For that reason, no matter how it sounded, that song may be among my greatest accomplishments to date.

Our

Community Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network Upcoming Program The Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network, or SIMEN, has an upcoming program scheduled for Tuesday, March 5 at 6:30 pm at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry St., in the Community Room. The program is free and open to the public. No registration is required. The name of the program is Hand Analysis and the Treasure Map in Your Hands. Hand analysis is the modern form of the ancient art of palmistry. Whereas palmistry is defined as foretelling the future from the lines of your palm, Hand Analysis (non-predictive palm reading) is scientific – it is repeatable, based upon thousands and thousands of conclusive studies. Hand analysis is learnable – like learning to speak a foreign language or play a musical instrument. This type of palm reading is used with great success around the world by doctors, therapists and coaches to help their clients experience more ease, joy and success in their every day lives. The shape of your palms and the lines of your hands have information about your temperament, your personality strengths and weaknesses, the type of emotional system you have, communication and thinking style, etc. Both hand shape and lines can change over time, but there is a part of your hands unaltered from five months prior to birth: your fingerprints. Like an acorn containing within it a picture of the oak tree it may become someday, your fingerprints reveal your Life Purpose. Join presenter Christine Kidder for an enlightening “hands on” presentation about what your hands can reveal. Discover your heart line type and how that can help you with relationships and communication. Christine Kidder is a certified hand analyst, artist, and creativity coach. She does private and group readings as well as creativity workshops using life purpose info combined with expressive art exercises to help you break through blocks in your creativity, your business and your life. Your Creative Purpose is her business. For more information, call (518) 210-1557.

Healing Springs I #66 February—March, 2013

Harmony Spiritualist Church was born. After countless conversations from like-minded, spiritual people in the Capital Region, that were looking for a place to worship a God of their own understanding, it only made sense to plunge forward and embark on this great adventure. Our Pastor, the Rev. Kelly Ballard and our Board of Directors were thrilled to celebrate our first service is July with over 80 people in attendance, and our numbers just keep on growing. What sets us aside from other Spiritualist Churches, is that we are an independent Spiritualist Church; we practice and teach unconditional love, we refer to our 9 Principles as guidelines, and we have no dogma or creed. We offer a safe and sacred place for everyone to freely discover and develop their spiritual path, their purpose, and their spiritual nature. We practice and promote prayer, meditation, and mediumship as a way to connecting more deeply with our Divinity and the Spirit World who loves, supports and guides us on our earthly journey.

Spiritualism is a religious and spiritual belief, which blends ancient wisdom and contemporary thought. References to Spiritualism have been found for centuries in religions, literary, and historic writings. Spiritualism, through mediumship, proves that life continues after the death of the physical body. All Spiritualists recognize God as the Universal Source, the Infinite Spirit and we believe that each of us is an integral part of that God Power. Our philosophy, drawn from this understanding, teaches that the pathway to spiritual growth and positive living comes from taking personal responsibility for one’s own behavior. We do not believe that anyone needs to atone for another’s transgressions. We are all surrounded and supported by an unconditional love, and always given a chance to heal and grow. Healing is another very important dimension of our belief. We accept the healing power of God as the ultimate healing force, while encouraging the importance and value of medical treatment and other health care services. We believe that the most effective healing benefits are derived from combined spiritual and physical inputs. Spiritualism...a religious and spiritual belief that offers a realistic and dynamic path for positive living. As our church continues to grow, we are holding our services on a monthly basis. Our services include quiet moments of reflection, inspirational messages, hymns, a brief sermon, hands-onhealing, and demonstration of mediumship. We are a family friendly church, and are thrilled to announce that we also have a Children’s Lyceum for the little ones of our Church community. Children, ages 3 to 12, are welcome to attend the Children's Lyceum during all of our services. Our Lyceum starts before the sermon portion of our service, in which our Pastor asks our children to come forward and join our Lyceum Leader to head to their own classroom for an age appropriate lesson geared toward the theme of our sermon; the children are returned to the congregation right before our Closing Hymn and Prayer. We hope that you will be able to join us for a refreshing, inspiring, and uplifting evening at our next service on Saturday February 16, 2013 at 6:30pm.That same day, we are having a

Peaceful Acres Horses; a Healing Sanctuary for People and Horses Are you stuck? Are you in a place of “question” rather than answer? Is the stress of life making your mind race? Are you following your heart and life’s purpose? Do you wish to “Surpass” your hurdles and live your dreams? Are you ready to be empowered? What would you do if you knew you could not fail? Renew, rejoice and expand with wellness retreats and workshops featuring SURPASS and horses. Through the gentle guidance of the horses at Peaceful Acres Horses and the facilitation of the PAH Empowerment Team, you will have an opportunity to participate in a three-day mind, body and soul wellness experience. Your SURPASS encounter will life you through your hurdles and guide you into living what is your true nature and joy-filled life! Offering wellness retreats and workshops for women surpassing cancer diagnosis, women who are seeking rest and relaxation, visionaries, people over-burdened, over-stressed and near burnout. We will be using yoga, equine guided experiential learning, Reiki, Vortex Healing, Matrix Energetics, art expression for healing, meditation, drumming, nature walks, positive affirmations, and color your way to balance. In addition, Peaceful Acres Horses is looking for adults who wish to help care for the horses at the ranch. PAH is a volunteer run organization. We employ one full-time stable care manager and two part-time college students who offer care and rehabilitation to the horses. Everyone else is a volunteer! Part of your volunteer experience with us will include being a buddy to a rescued horse and our Stability- Fit program. Many people would love to own a horse, but due to time constraints and other financial obligations, horse ownership is just not in the cards. By becoming a volunteer at PAH, you not only help a horse in need, you also have the joy a horse can bring into your life. Horses are a prey animal, they have a desire to be with their herd, “family”, enjoy companionship, can feel who authentically loves them and are wonderful counselors, friends and confidants. Physically: Instead of going to a gym to get in shape, I come to PAH instead! Doing barn chores; carrying grain buckets, water buckets is like lifting weights. My walking partners are the horses, bringing them out to a pasture for turnout or bringing them in for grooming. Grooming a horse gives your whole body a good workout. Emotionally: Being at the farm in such a peaceful environment, with the horses, has a calming and de-stressing affect. Horses are good for mind, body and soul.

Spiritually: Helping to care for the horses, seeing the progress made in the ones that were in such need of nourishment, shelter, medical care and love is most rewarding. It makes me feel good knowing I was able to help those who needed it. Peaceful Acres Horses is located in Pattersonville. What Animals and Nature Can Teach Us Numinous has an upcoming program entitled “What Animals and Nature Can Teach Us”, scheduled for Sunday, March 24 at 1:30 pm at the Clifton Park Shenendehowa Community Center, 6 Clifton Common Court, Clifton Park, NY. No registration is required. “We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals... In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extnsions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. they are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth.” —Henry Beston Almost everyone has experienced time pass quickly as we watch an inspiring movie. As we abandon our sense of self and emotionally merge with the protagonist, we often gain insights that would have been impossible for us to acquire through our own habitual perspective. Shamanic practitioners throughout history have not only acknowledged the power of this identity transference (shape shifting) but have cultivated this ability to help them gain wisdom that ordinarily would have eluded them. In this talk, shamanic practitioner, and publisher of the Healing Springs Journal, Katrina Clay will share with us how intimately communing with nature has profoundly influenced her life. She will discuss how animals and nature can teach us when we allow them to. Katrina will also facilitate a contemporary shamanic journey that will take the participants to the experience of being a different species of animal. Each person will experience the event differently, but all will come away with having had a private journey tailored by their own subconscious. Katrina Clay is a certified Shapeshifter Practitioner, a Shamanic Reiki Master & publisher of “The Healing Springs Journal.” She is also a forever student of the natural world—a place that holds the knowledge of billions of years. Katrina does individual modern shamanic work, teaches workshops and speaks to groups. For more information on Numinous and to see their upcoming lecture schedule visit; www.numinousonline.com

Clean Solar Electric Power for Your Home 4 E. Washington St. Glens Falls, NY 518-798-4047

by Steve Andersen e who read ‘Healing Springs Journal’ value clean living and health. We strive to achieve optimal health by eating well, paying attention to our thoughts, exercising, healing our emotions, and creating a healthy home. Our homes and families are sacred grounds. We pay special attention to our young people, who will soon take our places as adults on Earth.

W

Our homes are also connected to the outside world. The Internet, radio, and television connect us to communications. We have vehicles which transport us to and from places that we need to go. Some of us use highly energy efficient vehicles. Some of us minimize the number of trips we take. Some ride a bus or bike. Then there is electricity. It comes into our home from outside, enabling nearly every aspect of our modern lives. It keeps our food cold, and cooks food for eating. It brings us heat and light. It powers all of our communication devices, and keeps us safe by monitoring for fire or intrusion alerts. Yet about 70% of electricity is produced by fossil fuels, which directly contribute to greenhouse gases and climate change. Another 20% of the electricity generated comes from nuclear plants, which have their own long term, toxic implications. So 90% of the current electrical production comes from toxic sources. 25% of all greenhouse gas emissions are the result of burning of coal, natural gas, and oil for electricity and heat. In addition, 50% of the electricity that is produced is wasted. It never reaches our homes due to losses in the generation, transmission, and distribution systems. Solar photovoltaic (PV) energy is an alternative for us to consider. It produces 100% clean electrical energy from the sun, thereby reducing our impact on Mother Earth. PV produces electrical energy at our homes, so that there are virtually no losses in the distribution system before it reaches us. It can provide us with power when there is a utility disruption. And it makes financial sense. Many say that it is a better investment than banking alternatives since it usually offers double digit ROIs. And the energy is absolutely free, after the initial investment is recouped. This article will tell you more about solar PV energy. Just how 10 Healing Springs I #66 February—March, 2013

does electricity come out of boxes placed on your roof? How much does a system cost? How can you get a cost estimate? What are the steps involved in actually installing a system? Who can I contact to take the next step?

How is electricity generated by the sun?

The PV panels or modules that are placed on your roof are actually sets of cells. Each cell is made up of two layers of semiconductor material composed of silicon crystals. Note, silicon comes from sand, which is plentiful and benign. When sunlight enters the cell, its energy knocks electrons loose. The presence of wires in an external circuit provides the necessary path for electrons to travel. Extremely thin wires provide this external circuit, and the electrons flowing through this circuit provide the cells’ owner with a supply of electricity. Most PV systems consist of about 60 individual square cells averaging about four inches on each side. Alone, each cell generates very little power, so they are grouped together as panels or modules, encased in glass or plastic to provide protection from the weather. These panels are grouped into even larger arrays to supply the needs of a house, business, or industrial plant.

How much does a solar PV system generally cost?

More and more people are viewing solar energy as an investment, producing better returns than generally known banking alternatives. It was recently determined that solar energy is now cheaper per kW to install than new nuclear plants. And solar power is shown to be significantly cheaper than electricity from fossil fuel plants when you factor in health and environmental damage. Continuing improvements in PV technology are resulting in continually lower costs for PV. In the meantime, our governments provide incentives for the installation of solar systems. New York State provides a direct dollar discount off of PV installations, as well as a tax incentive. The Federal government also provides a tax incentive. With all

of these incentives, the net cost for a typical residential system costs less than $9,000, resulting in a payback of 6-8 years. You also have the option to lease a system. In this case, you sign a lease for 20 years. The lease company owns and maintains the PV system that is on your house. With a leased system you either pay the leasing company less per month than your utility company or prepay the 20-year lease and have no electric bill for the next 20 years. The financial analysis around leasing is similar to that of leasing a car. As with all leasing programs there are caveats in the details. Have your attorney review the contract since you will be obligated for 20 years and selling your home before then could have problems. Additionally no one really knows what happens after 20 years since we have not reached that milestone yet in respect to solar leasing.

Please note that the warranted life of solar panels is 25 years, although they are expected to keep producing energy long after that. Some solar panels currently installed have been in operation for over 40 years. There is little maintenance required, and all systems generally come with an overall warranty and maintenance provisions.

How can I get a cost estimate for solar PV on my house?

The first step is to solicit bids from solar vendors in you area. There are many vendors, which can be found with an Internet search. You may also wish to use the list provided on the NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) website. Make sure that a vendor is certified by NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) in order to help ensure that they have the knowledge and experience required. (Please note that not all vendors have their NABCEP certification listed on the NYSERDA website.) Each vendor will have their own process for estimating a PV project for you, but will generally involve the following steps: View your home location from a satellite view like Google Earth for suitability. About 30% of sites are not suitable for solar due to obstructions such as trees. Review your electric bill to determine your annual electrical usage. Inspect your home in-person to take measurements for the location of equipment. Produce an estimate for your consideration.

1 2 3 4

When you receive the vendors’ estimates and compare them, read the detailed language carefully. Many of the approaches are different from each other. For example, you will want to know who has responsibility for maintenance and warranty. Check the reputation of the vendor, and ask for references. Many solar companies have also started to install Chinese equipment, which for some homeowners may be a concern knowing the historical quality of Chinese products. What is Involved in the Actual Installation of a PV System? After you select a vendor, you will sign a contract with them, and will pay a down payment. The vendor will then file an application for funding with NYSERDA and any local permitting authorities. After NYSERDA approval is received, usually 1-2

518.895.2950 months, the vendor will obtain all the equipment for your installation. When the equipment is received, its actual installation will generally take about a week, assuming that there are no weather or other disruptions. The last step after installation is that your utility will install a special meter to accommodate the solar system, and give the final approval to ‘turn on’ your new PV system. The vendor should provide you an overview of system use, and provide all needed documentation. As we get into this New Year, let’s all continue to strive for a healthy lifestyle in all its dimensions. Steve Andersen is from Allura Solar, Inc. In my program my students learn how to step off the triangle of disempowerment and step onto the triangle of love. They discover the true causes of their unhappiness and proceed to eliminate those causes once and for all. It’s not what is happening to us in the moment that is the problem. The real problem is the triggers we feel from old wounds. These wounds happened in childhood or in other lifetimes. We carry patterns of negative core beliefs around, baggage from our past that is just waiting to be explored and healed.

The problem is that “we don’t know what we don’t know”. We live in a story. In our story we believe that the world is happening to us, that we are powerless. The truth is that the story is the symptom. To live the life of our dreams, we must discover the root causes, the negative core beliefs that are running our programming. Think of your body like a computer. If your computer has a virus it is highly unlikely that you would know it. All you know is that things are not working as they should. It’s the same for you. You ‘don’t know what you don’t know’. What you ‘don’t know you don’t know’ are negative core beliefs that you hold about yourself that keep you held in sabotaging patterns of behavior. In my program students not only discover their subconscious negative core beliefs, they learn techniques to remove these imprints from their luminous energy field and magically heal their lives. Jane is a confident and successful energy practitioner and chiropractor. She helps lots of clients, yet her personal life is a shambles. The long standing feud with her mother has caused much heartache and stress over the years. Finally after 50 years of dealing with this pain, she came to my program. She learned for the first time that she held the negative core beliefs of unloved, alone and unwanted. Her mother was not the problem! Nothing her mother said or did could make her feel loved, wanted or accepted. Once Jane healed those pieces she was able to heal quickly and easily. Today she has much happier relationships with her mother, her loved ones, friends and co-workers. The world is no longer happening to Jane, she is empowered and in control of her reactions and her life. She discovered the root causes of her suffering and released them. Her life now unfolds with ease and grace and she easily dreams her world into being.

Retreat?

thing but constraining. The setting did not matter; the intention of the gathering did. “And the intention of the gathering is?” I asked. “The intention is to retreat from your everyday life ... to step out of your normal routine ... to get away from your practical responsibilities ... all of which distract and prevent you from being in touch with your Inner Truth and your Heartfelt needs.”

by Jae Way

Well, I had to admit that it sounded like what I needed ... but I was still unsure. Being in a large group of women sounded emotionally intimidating, even for someone as outgoing as me. I wanted to know more about what would happen there.

“Retreat? Why would I want to attend a retreat?”

T

hat was exactly my response back in November of 1997 when my Transpersonal Therapist, Mia, told me that she would like me to attend an overnight women’s retreat at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Back then, I was a full-time Administrative Director for a large non-profit organization in the Bay Area. In addition, I was attending college part-time, and keeping up with domestic responsibilities while my husband worked crazy computer-guru hours. This is why I told my therapist that It seemed to me that a better use of what little free time I had would be to go to sleep early in my own bed with earplugs inserted. “Why would I want to feel constrained and uptight with a bunch of strangers in a church?” I challenged. Despite my mini-rant, my therapist gently persisted. She explained that regardless of the venue, this event would be any-

Career Where Choice Dreams Become a Reality * * * *

The answer Mia gave me was somewhat vague. “We start with some singing, and large group work through which we break down into small groups. After the small groups meet with their leader, there’s a lot of free personal time during which you can get a holistic healing or walk the Labyrinth, do artwork or just journal by yourself. Late at night the lights will be dimmed so you can sleep in your sleeping bag. In the morning you’ll be awakened gently and the process continues. It will all be over by noon.” I was still unsure and tried a couple of other ways to get out of complying with her request. Then, finally, Mia said, “Jae, I would really like you to do this. Trust me. It will be worth the initial discomfort.” Three weeks later, I attended my very first women’s retreat .... my first retreat of any kind. That 18 hours that I spent away from the outside world ... away from my To Do List, away from phones ringing or knocks on my door, away from my inner critic remind-

“That retreat gave me new perspective, gave me time to remember what I had originally envisioned accomplishing in my life.” ing me of what I should be accomplishing ... changed my life. That retreat gave me new perspective, gave me time to remember what I had originally envisioned accomplishing in my life. I was able to reach back to a time before I was subjected to the many “voices of reason” and “level headed intellectuals” telling me what I could and could not do. I rediscovered the center of my heart’s longings, of forgotten dreams that I left behind, and aspirations that I compromised away for someone else’s vision. I shared about these “aha moments” when our small group regathered that Saturday morning, and I experienced an amazing sense of peaceful affirmation as each member of my small group shared her own, similar aha. Our ages ranged from 60-something to 19. Our backgrounds, vocations, and personal reasons for being there were just as diverse. Yet every woman in that circle experienced a sense of reclaiming a disowned part of herself and of rediscovering forgotten hopes, dreams and goals. Several hours later, we were bidding goodbye to each other through shared song and personal farewells. I walked out of Grace Cathedral that morning with new perspectives about myself and

a very different vision of my future. That vision eventually led me to become the Holistic Life Coach and Retreat Facilitator that I am today. So, does every woman who attends a retreat have a huge life changing experience? Of course not. However, at every retreat that I have attended or facilitated, I have witnessed the amazing difference in the emotional and physical demeanor of participants from the time they arrive until the moment of their departure. They leave lighter, calmer and more optimistic about life. Such wonderful gifts ... from simply giving ourselves permission to retreat. Jae Way is a Holistic Life Coach & Retreat Facilitator with over 10 years of experience. She has a BA in Consciousness Studies from John F. Kennedy University in Berkeley, CA, & Master's level training in Psychosynthesis Therapy from the Synthesis Center in Amherst, MA. Healing Springs I #66 February—March, 2013

When I open sacred space and pull the energy of my soul star around me I open to my intuition and to connection with my invisible help. For so many years I felt sad, cut off, exiled from this way of knowing. Each of us has our own way of connecting to the invisible. Sometimes I see. Sometimes I hear. Sometimes I sense as in hot, cold, prickly. Sometimes I simply know. In this space my clients own intuitive abilities open and often they see and sense as I do. Gentle breathing begins to move what is stuck, the imprint of trauma being held in one or another energy center. Contracts, beliefs and legacies that bind are removed. Cords that hold us to others in dysfunctional ways are cut. Toxic energies are extracted. Parts of soul that have left due to trauma or neglect are retrieved and returned to self. Wholeness, balance and harmony are restored. Many of us are exiles, not only from our intuition, but from most of nature, from our ancestors, from our invisible help. Since embracing this path I feel less and less alone. I am beginning to appreciate the gifts of my ancestors. I am more appreciative of the unique place every thing has in this creation. I begin to understand what it is to “walk softly upon this earth.” I learn that I am connected and cared for, that I have a place, that I belong. Each day now I say a prayer: To the winds of the south: great serpent. Wrap your healing coils of light around me. Teach me to shed my past the way you shed your skin – all at once. Teach me to walk softy upon the earth. Show me the beauty way. To the winds of the west: mother sister jaguar. Protect my medicine space. Show me the way of peace, the way beyond death.

To the winds of the east: great eagle, condor. Come to me from the place of the rising sun. Take me under your wing. Show me the mountains I only dare dream of. Teach me to fly wing to wing with the great spirit. Earth mother, pachamama. We are here for the healing of all of your children: the stone people, the plant people, the creepy crawlers, the four legged, the two legged, the finned, the furred and the winged ones. All our relations. Sky father, grandmother moon, star sisters and brothers; you who are known by a thousand names and you who are the unnamable one. Thank you for bringing us together and allowing us to sing the song of life. Entering the path of the shaman has enabled me to reclaim the sacred in my work and has added nature to my experience of the sacred in my life. I always suspected that I was in this body, on this earth, for a reason. Harmony and joy and belonging are not so elusive after all. Healing can be swift and deep. And my own healing can extend into the past and the future. The change we need to continue to survive and thrive on this planet is possible when enough of us become willing to let go of what no longer serves us and bring in an appreciation of the gifts that life offers. 2013 is the year of the snake in Chinese Astrology. Optimal ENERGY by Paul Jensen, Jr ssential oils can be used for more than a soothing bath, massage or pleasing fragrance. They can be used to help us feel our best all the time. Feeling our best is always having enough ENERGY. Essential oils can provide us the energy we need to sharpen our mental focus, finish shoveling the sidewalk, walk the dog or even just read the newspaper.

E

Our bodies’ energy fluctuates during the day depending on our meals, lack of meals, water, lack of water, sleep quality, lack of sleep and our activities. Even if we sleep well, eat nourishing meals and move a lot throughout the day, we can still experience some fatigue or dips in our energy. A little or BIG pick me up can be one of your bottles of essential oils. Please place any bottle of essential oil in your right hand when you desire more energy. Please take a deep breath in through your mouth and hold it for 10-seconds. Please exhale through your nose slowly. Please repeat the same breathing sequence. If you do not notice an obvious increase in your energy please switch hands and repeat the same breathing sequence two times. It is possible holding a different oil will provide more energy. Please experiment with the oils you have to see what oil provides you the most energy. Please experiment using the different oils at times when you need more energy. Most likely you will find that at certain times one oil will help more than another. Essential oils can help us feel more energy and allow us to feel our best when we need to the most. Komyo Reiki is a simpler form of healing utilizing the original Usui-based four symbols with the motto: “Place your hands, surrender and smile”, the energy knows what to do! It also has a strong focus in the Reiki Principles that are guidelines for living an enlightened life. Enlightenment can provide a strong sense of inner balance, compassion, spiritual awareness, happiness, peace, wellness and a good life. It is not an end point but a compass to guide your journey. It is being present & content in every moment right where you are. Reiki healing from an enlightened view is not so much “doing reiki” as it is “being reiki”. Therefore the practice of Reiki is not time oriented to a schedule, but becomes a way of living. Compassionate concern for the wellness of all beings is the ever present lens with which to view the world and most importantly, yourself! Your journey begins and continues with your wellness. For you to assist others, you must be balanced and whole in order for the light to clearly shine through you. Simple, serene healing energy promoting spiritual enlightenment – Komyo Reiki. Theta Healing: Making Mircles a Common Occurrence by Allison Petroski very person, place, and thing, is an extension of Sourcethe Universe, God, Creator- the name you use or most relate to, comes down to personal preference. And because we are an extension of Source, we can access the same healing and transformative powers of Source. There is nothing that is outside of our capabilities unless you tell yourself otherwise.

E

ThetaHealing uses principles of quantum physics and a meditative state to facilitate physical and emotional transformation. Vianna Stibal, the founder of ThetaHealing, created this modality after healing herself instantly from a cancer diagnosis that had left her with only weeks to live. She found that the technique she used to heal herself could be taught to others. Everyone has the innate ability to tap into Source and make all of their wildest dreams come true, because we are co-creators in this experience called life and each one of us has a personal connection to that Source of infinite and unconditional love. All of the experiences we see materialize in our life - whether they be in our physical body, emotional state, or experiential reality, are outward manifestations of our inner thoughts and belief systems. When you change your beliefs and thoughts, the external reality changes too. With ThetaHealing, implementing a process of digging down through the layers of your belief system, subconscious beliefs can be accessed. The subconscious governs 90% of your belief systems, and many of those programs were developed from birth to 5 years old; often one is not even aware of them. When cleared, and re-programmed with higher vibrational thoughts and beliefs, miracles become a part of everyday life and people can experience dramatic changes in

their body, life, and circumstance. ThetaHealing has no limits to what it can help change. Issues or blocks around weight loss, money, relationships, addictions, and illness are a few of the larger issues that can be worked through. Any area of dis-ease, whether it is emotional or physical, begins first in the subtle bodies and overtime manifests itself into your physical reality. But the thoughts and feelings around what you are experiencing can be shifted when the subconscious root has been revealed and pulled. Thus creating fertile soil for the growth of new, fresh, nourishing experiences to be part of your reality. Allison Petroski is a LMT, Theta Healing Practitioner, Young Living Oils Distributor, and an artist. She is using her intuitive, artistic, and healing skills to teach others that each and every person has their own direct connection to the abundance and love of Source Energy. The After Effect of

Holiday

Stressors by Sarah A LoBisco, ND hew, we’ve whizzed through another holiday season. Many people actually experience more stress during this “season of joy” and are looking for relief and rejuvenation by February! It’s understandable, all the extra activities of shopping, spending, and food preparation and the after effects of the brain fog and weight gain from over-consumption can be depleting.

P

If it seems to you that this type of stress is not good for your body, your right! In fact, one recent study from Columbia University found that being stressed and anxious is as much a predictor of a heart attack as smoking five cigarettes a day! Negative and anxious thoughts affect our biochemistry. Think of how your body is impacted by hearing joyous vs. negative news. Did your heart race and mood drop when you learned of the recent events in Connecticut? Was your immune system impacted or your ability to focus at work sidetracked by the devastation of Hurricane Sandy? Therefore, I felt called to reiterate in this article exactly how thoughts and stress 24 Healing Springs I #66 February—March, 2013

affects our body. Later on, I will provide hope with tools which empower and shift the focus onto new solutions to life’s struggles. (Still, do keep in mind that the body does need some stressors in life in order to stay alert, balance immune and inflammatory response, and clear debris after disease processes).

Here’s the Biochemical Breakdown of Stress:

1

Stressful thoughts trigger the release of stress hormones (such as cortisol and other glucocorticoids), and various neurotransmitters (such as epinephrine and norepinephrine).

2

The hormonal and neurotransmitter modulation triggers a “fight or flight” response. This shunts nutrients and biochemical mediators away from assimilating utilizing nutrients and being utilized in the body for reproduction, digestion, and rebuilding.

3

As a result, long term stress can lead to hormonal imbalances. Specifically, the ratio of estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, and DHEA becomes less bio-available. The adrenaline rush further signals the thyroid to slow down, so your body doesn’t go into “overdrive”. These hormonal changes have an effect on fatty acid metabolism, glucose and nutrient use, weight management, mood, skin, hair, and immunity. Furthermore, blood sugar deregulation from cortisol excretion can wreak havoc long term on blood vessels.

4

If that’s not enough, stress side-swaps your chill-out neurotransmitters such as GABA and glycine (from signaling imbalances in electrolytes that excite the NMDA receptor) which increases anxiety and makes you a more alert yet chronic insomniac (“tired and wired”).

5

Your limbic brain (the primitive and emotional component of the brain involved in survival) then takes over and trumps the rational and executive functioning region (prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate gyrus). Bam! At this stage, the result can include, but is not limited to, inflammatory emails, excessive chocolate consumption, and reactionary texts going viral!

6

Finally, after enough depletion by stress, you get sick (either through an autoimmune response, allergy, or cold). -Initially, the body reacts by suppressing inflammation; however, long term, it decreases your bodies capacity to deal with environmental stressors and bugs.

Summary of stress effects: You become not only diagnosed with “wonky brain” but are also nutrient deprived, bloated, moody, and “sick and tired.” Not cool! Ouch, my Brain! Now, what to do? Take a breather! Studies show that mediation and relaxation actually reprogram your brain's response to stress and will boost your immunity.

Don’t Forget Fish Oil This supplement can help with brain function and decrease the inflammatory effects of stress.

Care for Yourself! It’s the season for giving, but it can take a lot out of you! If you are too busy with others, how will you be there for anyone else? This is a scientific fact: A study with 31 caregivers of dementia patients showed a decline in the caregivers more than the dementia patients themselves! (So, next

time you splurge on self-care, explain to your honey your helping your brain. J)

4

Nurture Quality Relationships. Studies show this boosts immune function!

Other examples of stress busters are yoga, exercise, laughter, and nature. What’s your favorite stress buster? Now, go do it. Healing Springs I #66 February—March, 2013

NewAge by Sarah Root n a sunny fall day, eight people gather eagerly to take a quantum step forward in their spiritual development. The event is the first of five monthly Earth Heart Energy Attunements – meant to bring expansion to their hearts and to connect them with all of nature. As everyone settles in and gets tea, they speak of the importance of “staying connected”, not to the internet and smartphones, but to the heart of the planet and the heart of the heavens. In fact, this heart alignment has been key to most ancient earth ceremonies and most recently to “the shift” of 12/21/12, which heralded a new age of spiritual awareness on the planet.

O

The Earth Heart seekers come with a belief that energy attunements can transform them in profound ways. Each successive attunement will lead them ever deeper on this shared journey to rediscover their divine selves. Reactivating the energies regularly will make these spiritual changes lasting. We establish a sacred circle and call in higher guidance. Spirit is already present, gently loosening accumulated tensions in preparation for the attunement: one woman says through tears, “The attunement energies are already coming, in waves of profound heart energy”. Quietly, we mention the many earth-centered traditions and their belief that the land is sacred and that humans have an innate interconnection to it. The group nods vigorously, feeling this truth stirring somewhere deep inside. They long to fully reclaim that bond: the tremendous joy of earth’s powers running through them and how that calls them to be guardians of the planet. It is time to reactivate our Earth Hearts! In silence we step outdoors, mindfully kissing the earth with each step as we walk to the vortex in the forest. We settle into circle, embraced by ancient maples and sacred stones. A short guided imagery is followed by a rich, deep, powerful infusion of high energies – the attunement ceremony – and then we gently “come back”. One woman leans her head in gratitude against a giant tree trunk. Another lets herself fall backwards into the arms of Mother Earth, breathing deeply, letting the energies settle. The others wander off for quiet time, hearts open to receive the first moments of new sacred relationship with all of nature. Afterward we share experiences with awe and wonder. Several

people sensed a beam of light coming down into them. Ben says he felt it energizing him “spectacularly as a column of light”; Sally says it had a message for her: “See yourself as the world sees you: pure of heart.” Next Ellen shares, “I went into this afraid of my power. After the attunement I saw the sun inside me… I physically shook off [my] darkness… The sun got bigger and lighter in my expanded heart”. Deb speaks up, “I feel an outpouring of love and light within me; I’m doing it consciously.” Kevin chimes in, “My posture is totally different – because I’m standing in my truth and my power!” Each person is receiving expansion and wisdom, palpably, in the perfect way. From month to month it is evident that the Earth Heart Attunements are having a cumulative effect. Alison gratefully says, “Working with these attunements is a smooth and peaceful experience – a gentle progression forward on my path, rather than a sudden jolting step”. Everyone nods. Megan explains, “It’s just been growing every day. I am one with the earth – feeling that groundedness – enmeshed with the planet”. An herbalist by trade, this has had quite an impact on the depth of her work with plants and their spirits. Kelly shyly mentions that after three attunements, she has been able to go off anti-depressants because of the new level of calm and grounding. “I can’t believe how happy I am!” she beams.

The Earth Heart energies were given by Spirit precisely for this time on the planet. We come away able to sense messages from nature; holding more of our light; walking with an “amazing sense of unity with other people and the earth”. It is the power of the human heart that is at the core of this awakening: our hearts are meant to resonate in oneness, peace, and life-giving love that will help hold the earth in balance. We stand at the brink of being “the new human”, here at the start of the Golden Age, on this planet that so clearly needs our help. Embarrassment As Teacher and exploring the Gunas to understand

energy and experiences in spiritual growth by Laura Harrison t hurts to be embarrassed by our actions. It burns our hearts to make mistakes, it is a complete and almost unbearable form of vulnerability, belly exposed and everyone can see our fallibility. Most people stop there, dwell, form hardened scars, and carry a heavy collection of regrets. But this is not where consciousness is asking us to stop, that is not the intended usage of such experiences. Instead, we stop, and feel that pain, and sit with it, recognizing it, and openly observe. Pieces settle into place. We can journal, talk to friends, practice meditation, energy healing, or yoga asanas. We can connect with animals or nature, walking and hiking, or sitting peacefully. We can think, and we can more importantly cultivate spaciousness... the spaces between the thoughts, and the pieces fall into place, insight arises, and the pain has become an agent for our spiritual development.

like puberty.. with all the awkwardness and embarrassment, confusion, agonizing discomfort, getting lost, figuring, exploring and blossoming into deeper and deeper levels of confidence, strength, and more palpable connections to inner rightness and truth. Just like puberty, the changes are happening, if we wish them to or not. It makes it harder if we fight reality, and since that would be futile, it only makes sense to open wider and wider to the painful but beautiful lessons we earn.

The regular and unconscious response to pain and discomfort is to avoid it. We tense against it, we close.. this is resistance. We learn in the path of mindfulness to instead open wider, to offer NO resistance as we observe all phenomena, all experiences equally without judgment or favoring. What happens when we cease to resist the pain, is that we feel it more acutely and intensely, but it leaves us more open, more free, and more conscious. We can learn from the pain- the sting of embarrassment teaches us not to repeat the same mistakes, like the memory of a burned hand teaches us not to touch a hot pan, or the memory of food poisoning provides a visceral reminder to be more cautious of what we eat.

In yoga philosophy, the Gunas are used as a handy way of discussing different qualities in energy. Our cycles of evolution can be seen and understood more with the help of these ideas. Don't worry about grasping the idea and labeling things.. let it help you to articulate what you already feel in your experiences.

I

The evolution of consciousness that we are all undertaking as embodied souls requires this trial-and-error process. As we raise our awareness, as our energy changes, that which used to serve us no longer does. Old habits that were real and important and part of us before, are no longer connected to who we are. These ghosts need to be released. This requires a humbling sense of openness and flexibility of mind, and it can be hard to imagine that those who know us can adapt as our personality evolves with us. However, people connect, disconnect, and sometimes reconnect as their energies are harmonious or disharmonious. Fear of loneliness cannot prevent our evolution, because when one person leaves, another will come. We are here to live our truth, no matter what the cost. And furthermore, if we do not live our truth, we will suffer deep inside, and that suffering will grow like a disease and eventually cause so much ugliness and hurt that we will begin to take it out on others. It never does us or others justice to maintain falseness.

Spiritual Puberty

This process of uncomfortable yet delightful evolution is almost 28 Healing Springs I #66 February—March, 2013

Everything happens in natural cycles; seasons of light and dark, birth and death and rebirth. Life in the physical is filled with nested spirals of evolution; microcosms tucked majestically into macrocosms. Linear paths are typically human in invention, everything else spirals around and around. Forgetting and remembering are part of the journey. Loneliness and rediscovery of interconnection are part of the path as well. As are mistakes and forgiveness

The Gunas

There are three gunas. All three are present in all of us, but certain energies, people, or actions can have a strong dominance of one guna in particular. Remember that these labels are to help you articulate and process what you feel, so maybe meditate on an example of each and feel the differences in the qualities of energy. Tamas is the guna of stillness, of lethargy, of delusion, darkness and depression. It is present in apparent solidness and stagnation. It is part of the “darkness of negativity, the delusion that we are separate and the objectifying other beings and taking advantage of them out of fear or greed. Depression and being overweight are states of excess tamas as heaviness. Tamas is also present in sleep and consistency, so it is not all negative. Rajah is excited movement. It is nervous energy, anxiety, scattered or flighty minds. It is like too much caffeine or hyperactivity. It is the inability to sit still, the need to be in constant motion or stimulation. It is chaotic and can be draining because it is unguided. It is abundant, unfocused energy. Sattva is extreme energy, but where Rajah is also extreme energy, Rajah is out of balance, and sattva is in balance, focusing that energy into one flow, like a laser. Sattva is considered the higher and lighter state of energy and it is the goal to cultivate an

abundance of sattva versus Rajah or tamas, according to Vedic philosophy. It is great peace, great love, the ability to accept what is in each moment without fear or resistance. The trick is that we can demonize all the other states of being. We can demonize the pain of embarrassment. We can demonize ourselves for learning slowly over many painful experiences, but it doesn't make sense to kill the messenger, to hate the process, the journey. Life IS a journey, your everyday life is your spiritual path. Vacation isn't the only time to be free and accept the flow. Its here and now. In the painful AND blissful experiences of life alike, we are evolving, growing, and becoming free of all the chains we've allowed to bind us. In every moment we are living our life, choosing how to write our story. And it takes patience, acceptance, and experiences of all kinds to hone the spirit in its interface with the physical. Without the movement of Rajah, we can never transcend tamas. We learn to process the massively intense amount of spiritual energy that is present in each moment, and at first we are distracted and scattered and thrown back and forth between tamas and Rajah. Then we learn to ride the ship, to yield and move with the flow in grace, and we touch sattvic states. Eventually, we rarely taste tamas, and we learn faster and faster to cultivate our Rajah into sattva. We become balanced and whole again, our essential state, our Self, shines brighter then ever before. We meet our Self. The recent universal shift in energy was from Rajah to sattva I believe, that is how I am experiencing it.. so instead of being bombarded by Rajah, we are becoming surrounded by sattva. Our journey is individual, but we all go through it, it is universal as well. Don't hold too tightly to anything, let it all flow through you and your experience, and as it does. Drop the judgement. Drop the false sense of control. Drop all the ideas of saving face, or what your face really is. Who you are is a constantly refreshed river, always new. Open wide and let pain and pleasure, highs and lows teach you, they burn off all that is no longer serving your journey and fill you with fresh love and light. Balance diligence and receptivity, and you will learn the dance. Let the experience be your guide. Ask the ractitioner

P Q

What do each of you suggest for ways of managing eruptive anger?

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell This is a rather complex issue that does have a pathway leading to resolution, if you are a willing participant in the process. As a homeopath, i can assure you that homeopathic remedies will assist you in enhancing the energy that you will want and need to explore the origins and triggers of your anger. How you respond when the anger surfaces, what you do once you are angry, and how you feel after the fact, will determine the particular homeopathic remedy that could help. It will help you to raise your head above water and feel strong enough and safe enough to take the necessary steps toward healing. Suppressing the anger with allopathic drugs will only delay a bigger break in the precarious stability of your emotional complex. I could also recommend hypnosis as a means of relaxing into the process of exploring your feelings, and finding tools to feel safe and empowered in your search for the reasons that anger has become a default mechanism to specific triggers. Remember that anger is often a response to a deeper fear that is often buried in your past. From a more spiritual perspective, self inquiry is a practice that I have used for years. It can involve journaling or simple writing about the experiences that arose in the midst of, before or even after the fact of the anger presenting itself. What was your response? Was it proportionate to the trigger? What were you feeling, or even, and sometimes more importantly, not admitting to yourself in the moment? For example, did you have a trying day at work where you were not successful in

an undertaking, or were not making the progress that you wanted, or imagined that you should have been able to have accomplished? Was that fatigue, frustration, self criticism in your field of awareness, unresolved and just waiting for an excuse to blow off steam? But at a deeper level, where was that frustration buried in your past? There is always a relationship to what we learned as a child and imbalanced behaviors we exhibit in our adult lives. Writing about what you are feeling, were feeling in the moment, can eventually lead to deeper understandings of a connection to shame, worthlessness, despair, etc. and remind you of other relationships and situations in your past. Lastly, I cannot recommend highly enough the regular use of body work to change your body energy and maintain optimal metabolism. Combined with some form of meditative or spiritual practice will take you to places that could never have been imagined. Eckhart Tolle refers to it as presence or being in the Now. Whatever the method or the language of awakening awareness, the tools for it are available, and it merely takes the willingness to use all of them. Today's world looks for simple and short term solutions to complex issues. Personal responsibility and integrity and honoring the complexities of the whole, will keep a perspective of balance and peace and it will lead to evening the eruptions of anger, and settling the underlying triggers within. Trust that the process will work, and it will. Jerome M Pindell uses homeopathy, hypnosis, jin shin jyutsu in a comprehensive practice in Clifton Park, Niskayuna, and New York City. Oriental Medicine; Gregg St Clair

That’s an interesting question. We’ve had other questions about anxiety or depression but never one as specific as how to deal with anger. One might think we need to leave the treatment of anger to a therapist but when we think of the body, mind and emotions being connected it becomes evident that anger can be part of bigger issues. Our physical health affects our mood so the more we can work on the basics of health; including exercise, stress reduction, diet, sleep and drinking water; the better chance we have of controlling our emotions.

We have five main emotions; Joy, Worry/Stress, Sadness, Fear and Anger. It is normal to experience every emotion from time to time; like waves lapping at the shoreline sometimes they’re peaceful, sometimes choppy, and sometimes tempestuous. So anger itself is not the problem, it’s what we do with it. If anger turns to rage and rage to violence, we know we are having a problem. Some people are blinded by the anger and don’t realize what they are doing at the time. The unfortunate result can be verbal or physical abuse of those we love. I’ve had some patients on the brink of divorce because of anger issues of their spouse. In Chinese Medicine we call anger Liver Qi Rising and we have herbs and acupuncture treatments specifically designed to help control the emotions. Working on your personal life can be a great help. You might need therapy but also try meditation or stress reduction exercise like yoga. A specific exercise I can recommend would be to put your hands on your abdomen and breathe in gently to feel your stomach rise. This helps to keep the liver qi down, reduce your heartbeat and blood pressure and control your mind and emotions. One way to help manage anger is to change our perspective to looking it as a good thing. Get help if you need it, but in the end, we want to rule our emotions and habits; not be ruled by them. Whenever something makes us angry, we can look it as a gift and an opportunity to practice. Gregg St Clair can be reached at 518-383-1230 or visit www.stclairfamilyhealth.com

I approach this in a general manner- the more distressed you are, the less chance of feeling you need to erupt. Anger seems related to unexpressed feelings so I encourage some form of talk therapy and evaluation of the strength of your support system. Often we feel all alone in chaos which is out of our control. If you gain a stronger sense of yourself, what many call “being grounded”, you can gather your energy to nourish rather than erupt in anger. Craniosacral therapy aids in grounding and the awareness of your “center” as would meditation, yoga or Tai Chi. Smell is the most responsive sense we have so using aromatherapy to use to counter the anger. Lavender is known to soothe the savage beast and is easy to find, use and appreciate. Honoring Silvia

younger brother Aydan…grew up. And each week Silvia looked forward to a hug from Joan and I…and eventually Lorelei and Aydan (when he’d allow it). And that is perhaps, the biggest lesson that Silvia taught us – to give a heartfelt hug to those who bring meaning to your life. It doesn’t matter where you are or who sees the shared love – in fact, perhaps it is most important that we’ve shared hugs in front of the book check-out counter, for all to see.

by Mark Verner Frederick was about to leave the library with my newly checked-out books under my arm, when I caught sight of her. It was Silvia and she was reading the back cover of a book before re-filing it into its appropriate place on the book shelf. I called to her, interrupting her thought process and when she looked up and saw me, we exchanged heartfelt smiles and then walked towards one another and shared a tender hug.

Hugs are good medicine – they show we care…at a deep level. And those that receive them are infused with what few medications can duplicate – Love. Heartfelt hugs trigger healing endorphins to be released and we “know” that someone else cares about our wellbeing, which can make an incredible difference in our lives.

I

When I first met Silvia back in 2005, my wife and I were new to the area. We were, and continue to be, big library users and so the entire library staff became “friends”. But Silvia, more than any other, found a special place in our hearts. She is an open book whose life unfolds around her and incorporates those people – especially the children - who walk through the heavy oak doors of the Carnegie-built Amsterdam Free Library. Over the years, we learned all about each other – our past, our families, what brought and continues to bring meaning to our lives…and with such familiarity, we became a part of each other’s family. And that’s when the hugs started…and they’ve never ended. Somehow, we got around to disclosing our ages and she found something that abstractly connected the two of us and said, “You’re 48 and I’m 84 – the same numbers, just reversed…”, or something to that effect. That conversation took place many years ago, yet both of us fondly recall how, in some way, it initiated our friendship. Silvia met our granddaughter Lorelei, when she got old enough to attend “Toddler Time”, which was held each Monday morning at the library. And on each of those Monday mornings, we’d stop and see Silvia. Over the years she watched as Lorelei, and in time, her

After my last visit to the library when Silvia and I talked, I realized what I love about her more than any other thing; she sees the good! Oftentimes, as we age, we tend to look for, and find, what we don’t like in this world, letting such thoughts act like dark clouds that sit above our busy minds. But Silvia, for as long as I’ve known her, bucks that trend. She, rather than looking for and finding what’s wrong…looks for and finds…what’s right. And as a result, she is a beacon of peace and joy that draws me in every time I see her. Silvia has been and continues to be one of my professors that have shared their wisdom with me over the years. Her lesson plan is simple and yet, enlightening: sharing one’s life story with the dancers we come into contact with, bring meaning, growth, and happiness in unexpected places…and add chapters that, had they been missed, would have left a gaping hole. And so, I want to thank you, Silvia, for the lessons, the friendship; and perhaps most of all…for the hugs. Love to you as this New Year begins, one of your special friends…Daniel Boone (Mark).
