It will provoke thought, evoke energy, and inspire action that is evolutionary and effective.

Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you For most of 25 years I have run for exercise. This winter I shortened my mileage. Now it feels like a struggle both mentally and physically to get my fitness back. Yesterday, while on a slow, uninspired run, a man slowed his car, leaned out and asked, “how far do you go?” Discouraged, I said “not far”. He replied, “I see you all the time, I thought you would say 15 miles a day or something.” Stunned, I realized that my perception of myself is not always the same as how others see me. All my life I felt transparent—meaning it seemed that how I was feeling inside was obvious on the outside and that made it real. This isn’t always true. We are taught to not pay attention to what other’s say about us. Yet, for true self-exam sometimes it is useful to listen to another’s opinion, weigh its validity and then no matter how it feels let it go to free up authentic expression. As I sit inside the house and ponder this story and why it is sticking with me, outside it is dumping rain and alternating thunder with lightning. A vision of myself as a flowering tree flashes through my mind. I see my emotions and opinions as the weather. The elements both nourish and destruct the tree’s growth and yet they are not actually the tree. Just as my thoughts can nourish and destroy my own flowering, they are not really me. Nor do my opinions of others create a truth about them. It is wise to be aware of how I feel within, while remembering it is not a definition of me, it is simply an estimation of that moment. We are fluid creatures that contain multitudes. This story began with a man seeing me as motivated, while I felt lazy. Honestly, both are true. For years I have been seeking wholeness. It is now apparent that I had mistakenly believed being whole would mean perfection by human standards. Yet with time behind me, what sages have been saying for eternity rings true in my bones. Totality comprises everything, including that which could be thought of as opposites; soul and ego, spirit and matter, light and dark, greatness and mediocrity, joy and anger, motivated and lazy. I have a strong preference for sunny, hot weather, which means I refer to such a day as good. While a cold, wet day is bad. However, they are both necessary for the health of the world, making neither one truly better than the other regardless of my prejudice. This shows me that nothing is inherently good or bad, only we put value on one side or the other. Value does not equal truth. It seems that once we deeply recognize this, we can move from measuring life against an ideal to genuinely living it. In peace and awe,

Breakthrough Counseling Center “We are not free to use today or to promise tomorrow because we are already mortgaged to yesterday.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson In my private practice with clients, I focus on solutions and goaloriented therapy. Many of us come from a place of past hurts and long-held pain. My wish is that for all of us to move past the hurts and start building a positive, meaningful life today. Still there are times when the past cannot be ignored. Holding to the past is to hold things against ourselves, and sometimes that’s where we get stuck. Then some attention must be paid to resolving old hates and anger so we can let it go and free ourselves to future possibilities. Sometimes it helps to recognize that people were not hurting us intentionally. They really were only operating from what they could offer at the time. That does not mean we have to forgive and forget. It simply means their actions no longer keep us chained to the past. No one deserves to hold us hostage any longer than they already have. It is time to heal and move on. Andrea DeGeorgio LCSW-R director of Breakthrough Counseling Center located at 376 Broadway Suite L2. She can be reached 518-683-2202.

Detoxing by Michael Lenz RPh he word toxins has become fairly common in today’s society when discussing the harmful substances we’re all exposed to on a daily basis, but what exactly are toxins, and what can you do to protect yourself from them?

T

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PDE’s), Bisphenol A (BPA),Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), Acrylamide, Mercury, and Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE).

Typical symptoms you may experience if you have a heavy toxic burden are fatigue, depression, headaches, brain fog, memory problems, balance problems, and possibly tremors. Some common conditions and disease states associated with excessive toxic burden include allergies, diabetes, obesity, fibromyalgia, chronic infections, and auto immune diseases. Sadly, in recent years we’ve seen increases in childhood diseases such as autism, childhood asthma, leukemia, and brain cancer.

Environmental toxins are defined as poisonous substances that originate outside the body. We can usually group them into either chemicals or metals. With the increased exposure all of us are subjected to, it’s really no longer a question of whether we’re toxic but rather how toxic are we?

So what can you do? The answer is twofold – reduce your exposure and detoxify your body.

Toxins come from a wide variety of sources, and studies have shown that exposure can begin while a baby is still in the womb. A 2005 study by the Environmental Working Group found 287 chemicals detected in the umbilical cord blood of newborns. 180 of these chemicals are known carcinogens and 217 are known to be toxic to the brain and nervous system!

A great first step is to do some research and remove chemicals from your home. Use chemical free products (soap, detergent, dryer sheets, insect and weed killer), and remove your shoes before entering your home to prevent toxins from being tracked in.

Unfortunately we are in almost constant contact with a variety of toxins every day of our lives. The CDC tested 212 known chemicals and found all 212 to be in the blood and urine of most Americans. Six chemicals in particular were found to be in virtually every person and were identified as probable health hazards: 10 Healing Springs I #68 June—July, 2013

REDUCE EXPOSURE: Remember also that the majority of toxin exposure comes from the food that we eat. 35% of all supermarket foods contain measurable pesticide residues that make their way into our bodies. This is why it’s so important to eat as much organic food as you can. Conventionally raised meat and dairy products have consistently been found to have the highest level of hormone disrupting chemicals in them, so try to choose free range, hormone and

Also try to eat fresh, cold water fish in place of farm raised.

DETOXIFICATION: Detoxification simply means normalizing the body’s ability to process and excrete toxins while temporarily reducing the amount of incoming toxins. When our bodies are exposed to toxins over time, they build up in the body and lead to toxic burden, causing the symptoms I described earlier. A detoxification program like the one we use in our pharmacy utilizes diet, nutrients, vitamins, and herbs to balance and support the body’s natural detoxification pathways – specifically the liver. By eliminating certain foods over a 10 or 28 day period and supporting your body nutritionally, you can improve your body’s ability to excrete the toxins that have built up. You can’t completely eliminate your exposure to environmental

toxins, but you can take steps to minimize your exposure and provide your body with the opportunity to cleanse itself through natural detoxification. Transitioning over to a healthy lifestyle can help reduce fatigue and increase vitality. So if you’re looking for a way to do some “Spring Cleaning” for your body, consider metabolic detoxification. Healing Springs I #68 June—July, 2013

In my practice as an energy worker, I’ve witnessed clients spontaneously reliving experiences from other times and places. I suspect that some of the more painful experiences of my own soul’s journey still linger as shadows of fear or doubt. During my regression, I knew I might be taken back to a traumatic event or asked to relive something I’d clearly chosen to forget. I knew nothing about the woman I was going to see, except that she’d been highly recommended by a friend I love and trust. Still, if I had any fear whatsoever, it was that nothing at all would happen. It was snowing when I pulled into the driveway of Elizabeth’s, unassuming house. As I climbed out of my car, a radiantly beautiful, white-haired woman came out to greet me. I could feel the warmth of her hug right through my winter coat. She led me inside, preparing two cups of tea and guiding me to a comfortable, high-backed chair in her living room. We talked about the drive, my work, the feral cat she’d been working at befriending, and other things before settling into the business of past life regression. Relaxed and curious, I listened as Elizabeth explained what was likely to happen. Like all healing work, I guessed the specifics would vary greatly from one person to the next, and when I laid down on the couch, I still held very few expectations. In her lovely, reassuring voice, Elizabeth began walking me through a relaxation visualization. As if walking through rooms turning off lights, we traveled from my feet up through my head, encouraging every part of my body to be still. From there, I was told to find an elevator. As a writer, this wasn’t difficult, though I couldn’t help but wonder how much of this was “just my imagination” as I entered the

elevator and looked for the control board. When Elizabeth asked me how many floors there were, I answered 32, not really knowing how I knew it, but feeling like it was true nonetheless. At her direction, I pressed a button, traveled down, and waited for the doors to open. When they did, she asked me to describe what I saw. To my dismay, I saw nothing. Not being able to see is actually a long-standing fear of mine. Ever since entering the world of professional healing work, I’ve bemoaned my inability to see. I sense with my hands, hear guides speaking in my ear and just know things, but rarely do I see. Even after purchasing a book on reading auras and practicing the eye exercises suggested therein, I still see little more than blobs of light and dark whenever I try to look at something with my third eye.

I explained to Elizabeth that I wasn’t seeing anything, feeling disappointed, though not surprised. In her reassuring way, she asked me to relax for a moment so some healing energies could come in. I obeyed, not seeing the violet or gold she was seeing, though sensing movement and heat and pressure around my head. Within a few minutes, the fear of not being able to see sharply escalated. I felt desperate. Somehow, I was failing at this. And then I heard in my head a calm voice. The exact words are lost to me now, but the message was clear. You can’t see because you’re blind. This was your experience. You are reliving it. With the words, tears began to flow from my eyes, and I felt a surge of desperation, unrelated to my typical fear of not seeing. I was blind! Elizabeth confirmed what was happening. After the initial shock, I found myself relaxing into it just a little. Yes, I was blind. It made so much sense. This was why I sensed energy with my hands in this lifetime. This was why I feared not being able to see. Within a few minutes, I began to sense more. I wasn’t just blind, I was old. And a man. I could feel the folds of a loose-fitting garment around my body. And I could smell everything. Body odor. Goats. To my right, I heard the sounds of a marketplace.

Slowly, I sank deeper into the experience, feeling a new desperation. Yes, I was blind, but there was something else causing this desperation. It was something like hope. I’d been blind my whole life, lived with the abuse it brought for many years, but now there was the possibility of something changing. I was being taken to see someone. Someone I’d heard amazing things about. If anyone could heal me, it was him. My sister was beside me (my mother in this life) and she guided me to a place where people were gathered. A great man was speaking, and his voice was like nothing I’d ever heard before. I recognized him instantly. His voice wasn’t loud, though he spoke with authority, and I could feel the energy of his heart in his words. There was so much in his voice! It drove through me like a laser beam of light, and I sobbed some more, recognizing I was in the presence of Christ. As my experience continued to unfold, I eventually found myself standing before him. Still blind, I could only feel him, but even #68 June—July, 2013 I Healing Springs

that was an amazing thing. His hands came up to my eyes, and a searing headache flashed through my brain. My eyes grew hot. Tears came quickly. I was terrified. What if it didn’t work? What if I was still blind when this was over? After what seemed an eternity, I gathered the necessary courage to open my eyes. I cannot describe what I saw in that moment (though I could, indeed, see), as too much of my memory is caught up in what I felt. If he’d been a criminal I’d witnessed committing a crime, I’d be unable to offer the police enough information about his appearance to create a sketch. All I know is he was stunningly beautiful. The energy of love pouring out of him was palpable. I felt it washing over me. I felt him looking through me, seeing everything there was to see, and loving me anyway. It was as if he could see right through to the undefiled altar within, and this was all he chose to see. In my head, the words I will follow you to the ends of the earth echoed forth, and I recognized it as the thought I’d actually had in that moment so long ago. I’d felt his capacity for love, and I wanted it for myself. I wanted to be able to look at people that way. This was the lifetime I’d committed myself to Christ-consciousness.

Although the story continued to unfold after this, it’s that moment that I remember most. I’ve thought back upon it many times, trying to recapture the utter peace and self-acceptance of it. When my world seems to spin out of control, I remember that look, that rush of energy, and I know I’m worthy. I’m already whole. Nothing compares to being looked at with unconditional love and acceptance. It was a turning point for my soul.

Evidence of the Power of Diet on Health by Sarah A LoBisco, ND An internal drive to work from a wellness perspective and my passion for the power of integrative and nutritional medicine is not just a theory to me. It originates from a direct experience of healing my own herniated disc during naturopathic medical school. Studying functional medicine the past three years has cemented this inner knowing of mine. It has provided even more biochemical evidence (aka nutrigenomics) on how quality food truly ignites this innate healing ability of the body. Here I’m providing some studies as evidence that what we put in our mouth affects our whole body.

Vegetarian Diet Can Decrease Heart Disease in One Study This study specifically compared a vegetarian diet to meat eaters. The study had more favorable heart outcomes in vegetarians. This does not prove that meat is necessarily a cause of heart disease, as the type of meat and how it is raised is critical to

health. It would be interesting to run another comparison study with those who consumed organic (which has less antibiotics, hormones, and inflammatory (omega 6) fats) to others who ate conventional meat products. The article states: A study that followed 44,500 people for 11 years found that vegetarians were less likely to be hospitalized or to die from heart problems. They also had a lower weightto-height ratio and were less likely to be diabetic.

The Fat Effect of Vegetarian Favor This following study may provide a clue into the quality of meat equaling better outcomes in the study above with vegetarians. It evaluated the replacement of saturated fats with polyunsaturated ones. This study found that the contributor to heart disease in the studied population was due to the inflammation profile of the fats in the participants’ diets. All-cause mortality (primary outcome), cardiovascular mortality, and mortality from coronary heart disease (secondary outcomes) was compared in a single blinded parallel group, randomized control trial conducted in 1966-73. The participants were 458 men aged 30-59 years with a recent heart trauma and who were based in an Australian coronary care clinic. (A meta-analysis was also used for missing data). #68 June—July, 2013 I Healing Springs 15

Join me at Wiawaka, Lake George July & August www.wiawaka.org The Intervention group had a diet with a replacement of dietary saturated fats (from animal fats, common margarines, and shortenings) with omega 6 linoleic acid (from safflower oil and safflower oil polyunsaturated margarine). The conclusions of the study are reported below: Advice to substitute polyunsaturated fats for saturated fats is a key component of worldwide dietary guidelines for coronary heart disease risk reduction. However, clinical benefits of the most abundant polyunsaturated fatty acid, omega 6 linoleic acid, have not been established. In this cohort, substituting dietary linoleic acid in place of saturated fats increased the rates of death from all causes, coronary heart disease, and cardiovascular disease. An updated meta-analysis of linoleic acid intervention trials showed no evidence of cardiovascular benefit. These findings could have important implications for worldwide dietary advice to substitute omega 6 linoleic acid, or polyunsaturated fats in general, for saturated fats.

Diet and Asthma Our American diet is affecting our youth. The impact of a supplemental program of fruit and vegetable concentrate, fish oil, and probiotics (FVFP) was studied in 192 asthmatic children aged 10-12 years. This 16-week school-based-double-blind placebo-controlled randomized trial reported favorable effects: FVFP supplements reduced medication use and improved pulmonary function in asthmatic children. The present study supports an adjuvant intervention with a combination of fruit, vegetable, fish and probiotic foods. 16 Healing Springs I #68 June—July, 2013

439-7644 Diet and Beauty Here’s good news for those who eat less sugar, besides the health benefits! A recent study found a connection between sugar and diary to pesky pimples: For decades, the connection between diet and acne has been dismissed as an old wives’ tale. But now researchers are revisiting the subject — and a new review of studies finds evidence that what you eat may have a bearing on the severity of your acne after all. About 17 million Americans, and 80 to 90 percent of adolescents, experience acne, according to the paper, which appears in the March issue of the Journal of Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Antioxidants and Optimism Another benefit of diet besides physical health, clear skin…A better mood…Middle-aged adults who are more optimistic about their future tend to have higher serum antioxidant levels than their less optimistic peers, new research suggests. Investigators at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts, found that for every standard deviation increase in optimism, there was an increase in carotenoid concentrations of 3% to 13% in age-adjusted models.

Mom’s Diet and Baby’s Health In a study of 12,583 nonpregnant women in 1997 whom delivered babies before December 31, 2003, 293 mother-child pairs had complete measurements of maternal plasma levels of poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) concentrations (the more inflammatory fats) to study the effect on birth outcomes.

The researchers compared the associations between maternal plasma of PUFA status vs. more anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acids. They made the comparison at 34 wk gestation and the resulting offspring body composition later in life. Conclusions: This observational study suggests that maternal n-6 PUFA status during pregnancy might influence offspring adiposity in childhood.

Caffeine Intake and Little Baby Seems like coffee could also negatively affect outcomes on baby: A study of 60,000 women in Sweden found that babies' birth weight decreased 21 to 28g for every 100mg of caffeine consumed a day.

Consumption of caffeine from all sources was also found to lengthen pregnancy terms by a rate of five hours per 100 mg of caffeine a day. Moreover, that figure spiked to an even longer gestational length when caffeine intake came specifically from coffee: eight extra hours for every 100 mg of caffeine a day. Crystals’ Amazing Gifts: Balance, Comfort & Calm

Craniosacral Therapy, Chiropractic Saratoga & Schenectady, NY

by Paul Jensen rystals are beautiful gifts from nature that can help us balance our energy, feel more comfortable and calm. Electromagnetic energy in our bodies moves when a crystal is near us to create balance or harmony. We experience harmony when our chakras are radiating electromagnetic energy, and our meridians are moving electromagnetic energy freely. Our aura is our electromagnetic energy outside our bodies. Our meridians are where electromagnetic energy is inside our bodies. When our electromagnetic energy moves from an area where it was excessive to an area where it was deficient, we feel more relaxed, comfortable and calm.

Our bodies’ meridians and chakras help us use electromagnetic energy. Our sun is our source of electromagnetic energy. Chakras are like solar panels on a house. Solar panels capture the sun’s energy and use it to power the house. Our meridians are like the electrical wiring from the solar panels to the rest of the house. When our chakras soak up the sun, we feel great. Our house is full of power, and our meridians can distribute electromagnetic energy efficiently. Each meridian supplies electromagnetic energy that helps our glands and organs function optimally. Excessive or deficient electromagnetic energy in a meridian causes the corresponding gland and organ to become uncomfortable, stressed or symptomatic. Disharmony exists when chakras and meridians have excessive or deficient electromagnetic energy. We can experience disharmony when we are hungry, tired or dehydrated. If we place our right hand over the center of our chest, and our left hand over the top of our head, we can feel a significant difference in the heat or lack of heat between our heart chakra and our crown chakra. We can also feel the difference in heat between our arms, shoulders, neck and face. Disharmony is always obvious in that we are not relaxed, comfortable and calm. If meridians have disharmony, disharmony exists in our chakras. It is possible for disharmony to exist in our chakras and harmony to exist in our meridians. The longer disharmony exists in the chakras, the greater the possibility of disharmony exists in our meridians as well. Crystals help eliminate uncomfortable feelings by moving our electromagnetic energy from areas that are excessive to areas that are deficient so harmony exists. Uncomfortable feelings, physical discomfort and pain, disempowering thoughts and beliefs all are

We most likely were thinking about an event or person that provided us with a sad experience. We may feel tightness, heaviness or coldness in our shoulders, neck and upper back. It is normal to feel sad, angry, anxious and overwhelmed from time to time. Crystals can help us feel how we desire quickly.

crystal can be positioned as close as possible to the head on the side that feels more cold, empty or uncomfortable. If disharmony exists in our left arm, we can place the third crystal between our left arm and our body below the elbow, but above the hand. If a disharmony exists in our right foot or lower leg, we can place the third crystal next to the outside of our ankle.

Harmony in our chakras and meridians is necessary for optimal physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Crystals can help us achieve that and maintain it. Using crystals to create and maintain harmony is fun and empowering. Please use the following instructions to experience crystals’ amazing gifts for yourself.

Disharmony can be detected without knowing where a chakra or meridian is located. Where we have pain or discomfort there is disharmony. We can also have disharmony where we feel coldness, emptiness or lack of warmth. Please pay attention to how you feel in your body. Please lie down to practice this body awareness exercise. Where do you feel discomfort, pain, coldness, emptiness or lack of warmth? Please pay attention to these areas and how they compare the rest of your body. If you feel discomfort, pain, emptiness or lack of warmth in only one part of your body, please compare this area to the opposite side. EVERYONE can benefit using crystals in this way.

Crystals can help move electromagnetic energy to create harmony in our chakras and meridians. They can help us whether we are moving, sitting, standing or lying down. The following are examples of using crystals to create harmony in our chakras and meridians while lying down on our back with our legs 2’ apart and our arms 6” away from the sides of our bodies. If disharmony exists in a chakra or meridian or multiple chakras and meridians, one crystal can be placed above our head, another crystal can be placed between our knees and a third one can be placed next to the area of disharmony. For example, if disharmony exists in our 6th chakra, the third

The Force

of Life

An Excerpt from the book ‘The Art of True Healing’

W

ithin every man and woman is a force that directs and controls the entire course of life. Properly used, it can heal every affliction and ailment we may have.

Every single religion affirms this fact. All forms of mental or spiritual healing promise the same thing. Even psychoanalysis and other forms of therapy employ this healing power: The insight and understanding that effective therapy can bring releases tensions of various kinds, and through this release the healing power latent within and natural to the human system operates more freely. Each of these systems teaches its own specialized methods of thinking or contemplation or prayer that will, according to the terms of their own philosophies, renew our bodies and even transform our entire environment. Very few of these systems, however, actually fulfill in a complete way the high promises they have made. There is little understanding of the practical means whereby the forces underlying the universe and permeating every cell of our bodies can be utilized and directed toward the creation of a new heaven and a new earth. Each one of us has the power to begin the process of reconstruction for ourselves; each one of us can discover the force that can bring us true healing of our bodies and minds. The central question, then, is how are we to be-come aware of this force? What is its nature? What is the mechanism whereby we can use it? A great many different systems have evolved, widely differing processes by which we may discover the presence of such a power. Meditation, prayer, affirmation, invocation, emotional exaltation, and other forms of declaration made at random upon the universe or the Universal Mind are a few of the methods. All have this in common: By turning the fiery, penetrating power of the mind inward upon itself, and exalting our emotional system to a certain pitch, we may become aware of previously unknown currents of force, currents that are almost electric in their interior sensation, and that are healing and integrating in their effect. It is the willed use of such a force that is capable of bringing health to body and mind. When effectively directed, it acts like a magnet: It attracts to every one of us who employs these methods the things that we require or fervently desire or that are needed for our further evolution. The fundamental, underlying idea of this powerful healing system is this: In the ambient atmosphere surrounding us and

20

Healing Springs I #68 June—July, 2013

pervading the structure of each one of our body’s cells is a force, a field of energy. This force is omnipresent and infinite; it is as pres-ent in the most infinitesimal object as it is in the most proportion-staggering far reaches of the known and unknown universe. This force is life itself. Nothing in the vast expanse of space is dead. Everything pulsates with vibrant life; even the subatomic particles of the atom are alive. The force of life is infinite; we are saturated, permeated through and through with this force, this energy. It constitutes our higher self; it is our link with the entire universe; it is God within us. Every molecule of our physical system is permeated with the dynamic energy of this force; each cell in our body contains it in abundance. When we consider this force, when we become aware of it, we are then brought face to face with the enigmatic problem underlying all disease: If we are filled with this energy, and if this energy is limitless, how can we become depleted of this healing energy, and become unhealthy and sick? What is fatigue? How can there be depletion of our energy if vitality and cosmic currents of force pour through us constantly, saturating our mind and body with power? Essentially, it is because we offer so much resistance to its flow through us that we become tired and ill. How do we manage to defy the universe? How are we able to offer resistance and opposition to the very force that underlies our continually evolving universe? There are many causes of this resistance to the inward flow of the spirit: Most of us were raised to be complacent and confused and even cowardly from childhood on into adulthood, and most of us have a false perception of the nature of life. The fact that this is generally unconscious doesn’t matter — are any of us really aware of all the involuntary processes going on within us? Are any of us conscious of the intricate mechanism of our mental processes, and of the processes by which our food is assimilated and digested, and our blood is circulated, bringing nourishment to every cell? All these are purely involuntary processes, just as, to a large degree, our resistances to life are purely involuntary. We have surrounded ourselves with crystallized shells of prejudices and ill-conceived versions of reality; we have shielded ourselves with a mental armor so dense it affords no entrance to the light of life that surrounds us and envelops us. No wonder we become sick, impotent, helpless, poor! No wonder the average individual is so unable to adequately deal with life! Most Excellent Life by Annie Gregson ife is for you to enjoy. Wouldn’t you love to be naturally stoked every morning? “Why can’t my life be easier?” Has that thought ever crossed your mind? That was my mantra for years. My life felt hard, like drudgery. I could not keep up at work and was too tired to enjoy my life at home. Good thing I was married to a Life Coach – we took the tools we were taught at “Life Coach School” and used them to nourish and enrich our own lives: to have more fun, more energy, more ease.

L

The key was to figure out how to live according to my own set of values. Know myself better? Interesting. Increase my happiness? Measureable. And once I figured out how to live my life completely based on my values? PRICELESS! Identifying your values is like knowing how to navigate the world by your unique internal compass. It’s the road into your essence and personal power. You will gain: • direction, focus and confidence • independence and freedom • more control and consistency • credibility and authenticity • increased self-awareness/selfacceptance • ENERGY! So how do you clarify which values are truly yours? In the AprilMay issue of Healing Springs, I designed an exercise to help you get started. Here’s another way:m Look at the value words below and circle 10 that you identify with, as though “MY VALUES” were a recipe and these 10 words would have to be on the ingredients list. Tell the truth; pick words that shout, “THIS IS WHO I AM!” not who you think you should be. Some words will not surprise you. Others may cause you to think: “That would be way too much fun.” “That’s dumb. I should pick a better word.” “My life would have to change drastically if that was one!” Those unnerving words may be hidden values you buried for any number of reasons, like you’re too busy, you believe you have no choice or you think you should. Well, stop shoulding all over yourself! Ready, set, start circling!

Transformational Healing:

The Spiritual Role of the Healer by Mary T. Sise, LCSW

“Healing is not about making the illusion better, but about releasing or getting out of the illusion. We have become separated in our mind from our true essence, which is pure Light.” — Her Holiness Sai Maa

W

hat is the illusion? Sai Maa, creator of the global Transformational Healers Program, teaches that the illusion is the voice of our ego, telling us that we are our story and continually trying to justify our existence, moods, and opinions. From this space of ego and separation, we contract our energy field, which then creates “dis-ease” within us. Western medicine frequently overlooks this, treating only the symptoms of the energy contraction such as back pain, cancer or depression. Transformational healing transcends the “treat the symptom of disease” model of healing. Rather than focusing on symptoms or collecting various healing techniques, transformational healing focuses on the cause of the contraction in our energy field, mind or body; and also on the spiritual role of the healer. Moving beyond the ego's concept of disease or conditions, we naturally enter a place of esoteric knowledge—the spiritual dimension of healing—and learn how to transform contracted energy with love and compassion. In the role of the healer, we recognize that, similar to a tuning fork, our own energetic vibration impacts others. When we acknowledge and release our own lower vibrational fears, we are then able to experience the higher dimensional levels where healing occurs naturally. The mechanism or modality for the transfer of energy (i.e., talk therapy, surgery, massage) although necessary, becomes much less important. All great masters have shown us that healing occurs when higher vibrational energy comes into contact with a lower vibrational condition.

24

Healing Springs I #68 June—July, 2013

There are two important questions to ponder: If the healer’s vibration is so important, how do we increase our own capacity for Light to flow through us? And, if we are not coming from a space of pure Light, will we incur karma? The issue of incurring karma was one of the most shocking things I became aware of during my training with Sai Maa. Sai Maa states that everything is karma, and if we take money when we ourselves have not healed something, we are incurring karma. When I first heard this, I reflected back on my years as a therapist, and I couldn’t help but think about those clients with whom I became frustrated with or might have labeled as “resistant.” Did that mean I had the same issues as the client and just couldn’t help them until I cleared the energy from within myself first? The answer was a resounding yes. And, if I was taking money for this, not only was I not helping clients, I was preventing them from receiving the help they needed. All healing happens in the vibration of Love. The minute I become frustrated or controlling, the Light can no longer flow through me to the client. This doesn’t just apply to energy healers, but to everyone in the healing role—doctors, massage therapists, talk therapists, etc. When we are “in the flow,” it seems magical—we ask the right clinical questions, have brilliant insights and say the perfect thing. This is what is meant by being in alignment with our higher self, the Divine within us. As described above, healing happens when a higher vibration meets a contracted vibration. Since there are only two energies on this planet—love and fear—this means that healers cannot have the same vibration as the client, otherwise the healer will be triggered and go into contraction themselves. The expression of the fear may be different (shame, judgment, anger, terror, guilt, unworthiness), but the healer must have healed that energy within themselves to be a clear, effective conduit of healing Light. If the healer isn’t coming from that higher space, than he or she is using their own personal energy, which is exhausting and, frankly, not very powerful. This is how those in the healing profession get sick themselves. As I continued to learn Sai Maa’s teachings on healing, I began to notice that when I was giving advice that I didn’t practice myself, the other person didn’t receive it. It was uncanny. I also realized

I discovered that this was because the person actually embodied what they were speaking about. I learned that healing doesn’t happen with the words I say. Healing only happens with the energy I AM. If my words don’t match my vibration, then they have no power to heal or transform.

At this moment in time, we are blessed to have the presence of a living Master, Sai Maa, who brings to us the esoteric knowledge of vibrant health and healing at all levels. Sai Maa states that everyone is a healer and created the Transformational Healers Program to educate and empower us to align ourselves with this Divine knowledge to serve others. In addition, just simply being in the presence of a living Master attunes our own frequencies to a higher level. This, in turn, serves the planet. Each transformational healing workshop with Sai Maa includes esoteric teachings as well as initiations of Divine Light to empower us in our daily lives and to serve others.

Lately, the world seems to be out of control, and I feel that it is affecting my own as well others feelings of safety. I feel a bit afraid and notice a lot of my friends, family, and peers seem to suffering with some level of fear. What can you do to help us stay in balance?

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell Fear arises from the limitations of facing the unexplainable, the feeling of being unable to manage a difficult situation, the disconnected explanations of why an event happened. The need to understand CAN give rise to empathy or it can give way to hostility. Any hostile response will engender push back, as in when it arises from the individual response to drug therapies that are generally designed to overwhelm without regard to the unique circumstances of the individual. When hostile responses occur within the relationship of individuals, of regions, of countries, ethnic differences, or religions, the countering response is usually one that escalates the inflamed tensions, and often leaves those at the periphery in fear.

Healing Springs I #68 June—July, 2013

Hostility can be seen in our language as in: the war on cancer, on drugs, on bullying, on extremism, or the fight against....this, that, or the other problem for which the limits of our perspective have fallen short of expectations. What happens with fear as an emotion when it is suppressed? When unexamined it can cause us to withdraw. Any effort, other than to face it and recognize it, will leave that energy in the subconscious psyche to seek an attachment where the individual can give a face to the feeling, and then attempt to manage it. But what happens when the larger community begins to feel unsafe even in the safety of their home, their community or their country? They begin to feel vulnerable and susceptible. Look at the Boston marathon bombing, the search for the suspect and the eventual capture. The aftermath was as palpable a collective sense of relief as was what preceded it, the fear, the sense of powerlessness and a lack of safety. It was a collective feeling, felt by everyone affected and also by everyone witnessing it from afar. That imprint on the collective psyche has an effect on the long term ways in which our more vulnerable community members carry on their daily routines, how they look at various situations, and make decisions. Suspicions become more common place in our responses, and underlying that is fear / anxiety. That is fear, and a fear that limits us and our ability to make clear choices, free of emotional triggers that our conscious mind might be able to recognize immediately.

It is this "background energy", that doesn't quite rise to the conscious level within the context of our daily lives, that has an impact on the totality of our life and our health. I witness it's impact day after day in infants, children, and adults. The older we get the more likely we are to rationalize its impact, but it is there. I use all of the tools that I have been given to assist clients in learning how to place this surreal sensation into a very real and manageable context. Whether it is a single modality or a combination of homeopathy, hypnosis, jin shin jyutsu and counseling, the important message here is that each person must examine their individual life and lay claim to what is theirs and what is not. Find the supports that can be of some assistance in maintaining your inner calm and balance. The tools that I use are but a few that DO work, but there are many others, such as those that my colleagues here offer. Most importantly, avoid burying the feeling, whether through drug therapy or sweeping them under the proverbial rug. Those feelings will only grow, if unexamined. Be willing to explore outside the range of your normal explanations of causes. Give over to quiet times, meditation, reflection. The question that you pose here is an important one, and deserves the attention of everyone. Thank you for recognizing it and posing it here for our community. Jerome M Pindell facilitates healing through a broad number of tools. He uses the arts of homeopathy, hypnosis, and jin shin jyutsu, as well as counseling from a deeply committed spiritual and intuitive sense in a comprehensive practice in Clifton Park, Niskayuna, and NYC. Oriental Medicine; Gregg St Clair We’ve had questions about anxiety, stress and depression in the past but fear is very specific. I’ve actually been working on an article focusing on a concept I call eco-dysphoria that I believe relates. The fear you are talking about is not merely a personal fear; such as: I’m afraid I’m going to lose my job; but one connected to what’s happening in society. Eco-dysphoria is a result of sensitivity and the feeling out of sorts to the goings on in our environment. Today, our environment is no longer only local but worldwide and we have instant news and tweets to reinforce this connectivity. In Oriental Medicine we say that being human is a microcosm for the Earth so as things go in the world, so they go with us. If the world is out of balance, so are we. Historically, social change happened slowly over decades and centuries, but now things are moving so fast it’s no wonder stress, anxiety and suicide rates have sky rocketed in modern countries. Even among child psychology is the idea that ADHD is a result of modern culture causing hyperactivity in children; and Autism is a strategy of shutting down as a way to cope with all the over stimulation. So I believe the fear you are talking about is a direct correlation to your sensitivity, showing how in-tune you are with the “out-of-tune-

ness” of the world. In Acupuncture every organ has a different emotion connected to it and fear is related to the kidneys. What’s really interesting about this is that the kidneys also harbor our potential and destiny. It’s fear we need to overcome to tap into the best part of us. Our will power is also stored in our kidneys which tell us: it takes will power to overcome our fear and tap into our highest potential. It doesn’t mean we won’t have fear, but we will not be overpowered by it. This is a goal that can sometimes take work. One thing acupuncture does to help is release endorphins that calm the mind, reduce anxiety and fear, and create a sense of wellbeing. We also have herbs that can be used as options to psychiatric drugs. I believe that the rising trend in alternative and complementary therapies is parallel with humanities rising consciousness about our environmental responsibility and spirituality. Everything is out of balance. We need political, economic, environmental, health and education reform. Mankind is facing one of the largest evolutionary shifts in our history. To evolve means to grow into the unknown. We fear what we don’t know. It makes sense that we have fear. It’s a scary world. You need to find the tools that work for you; such as acupuncture, meditation, yoga or therapy; to help deal with the eco-dysphoria that doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. Chiropractor; Lynn Allison A teacher once told me life was like a double paned window. The lower pane is all those things you could not change and to focus on the upper pane. This you can change, bringing hope and joy back into your life. Consider learning something new, work with your hands creatively. Preparing and eating well with foods that are in season, that please all of your senses and reminds your midbrain that you are nurturing yourself. Also, that time does not stand still so this too will pass and that life is pleasant. We are able to hold one thought at a time and practicing countering fearful thoughts with hopeful thoughts will help. Physiologically all of these things will stimulate the release of nitric oxide in your cells as well as easy exercise and activity, green leafy vegetables and sunlight. They will change your stress level from fear. Diaphragmatic breathing like baby's sleeping breathe lowers blood pressure, eases depression and fear as well as massaging our organs. There is a “TED” talk about Smiling that is great. Watch it and learn it does more than anything else to return the sense of well being to you and anyone who sees your smile. Healing

Sanctuary by Dr. Lisa Fraine hen I moved to the beautiful city of Saratoga Springs I had no idea of the plethora of healing arts that exists within this tiny community. I was equally pleased to learn of the many levels of healing opportunities that exist through the different types of healing techniques that I became aware of through practitioners at group gatherings, local journals and through social networking. Along the way, I stumbled upon a wonderful experience and grew a friendship with Nancy Kendall the co-owner of The Healing Spirit Center that is located within the Arcade Building on Broadway. With a referral from a new friend, Abigail Thurston, I found Nancy at a very stressful time in my life. There is a saying “if you ask, you will receive”. I always seem to get just what I need at just the right....serendipity of the Universe! Now, being a healing practitioner myself, I know the importance of self care and preservation during times of increased stress but there have been times in my life when I have chosen to put others before myself. Not to intentionally cause myself suffering but mostly because of practicality.

With our move to Saratoga Springs in the spring of 2011 came the known diagnosis of cancer for my husband. He had already had surgery to remove the diseased tissue from two sites in April at Johns Hopkins University Hospital just after accepting a new position that would move us four hundred miles from our previous home. He took on the responsibility of a new work opportunity a short ten days after his surgery. At that time we did not know the extent of the cancer. We were very fortunate to find all the services he needed here in Saratoga; not only the medical care but the holistic therapies as well. Initially, he chose to go the medical route of chemo and radiation therapies. I worked with him in a holistic manner exclusively during his physical evacuation of cancer. I assisted him to get to the root of the problem through RoHun; to understand the faulty thoughts and unheard feelings. To work in the etheric layer of his body. He grew to understand that the creation of these thoughts and emotions were just as guilty for causing the result of this disease in his physical body as any other genetic or environmental contribution. When all was finished on the medical realm, he knew it was time to rid his physical nature of the toxins that had killed the cancer cells. He then chose to embrace other holistic therapies to rebuild his body. One of which included the massage therapy that Nancy had to offer. We both were in need of balance and so we sought out Nancy’s services as a way of shedding the imbalances energetically through the physical means of massage. Coming to The Healing Spirit Center was like going into a sacred space. Immediately we felt at ease within the womb of The Healing Spirit Center. The energy is soft and embracing. A spectacular mood for healing to occur. I often felt as though I began releasing on the couch, even as we chatted before the physical work began. We both felt the utmost respect and safety in this #68 June—July, 2013 I Healing Springs 29

Your Next Best Friend I'm Jackson, and I have a soft grey coat. Sitting on laps is my favorite hobby. A while ago I had to have all my teeth removed, so I need to eat wet food. Recently I was living the stray life, and I'm not sure how that happened. I missed people and having a family of my own. How about taking home a real sweetheart? I’m Codie, a 2-year-old bull terrier mix. I came to the humane society as a stray and X-rays showed she had a 12 inch pin in my leg that was sticking out both ends. Thanks to the help of several doctors, the pin was removed and I am a happy girl! I will sit when you walk up to say hi. Can I come to your house and tell you my story.

space. Something that is so important for inner healing to occur. I know that when I refer someone to the practitioners at The Healing Spirit Center, they will have an incredible experience, maybe even life altering. It is a great testament to our healing practitioners in the Saratoga Springs area. My husband continues to make improvements. It will soon be two years and that magic word will eventually appear on the lips of the medical practitioners who have cared for him. But he and I already know he is ‘cured’ because it has been his desire to be cured. One of the healing therapies that I had chosen to use with my husband was a simple form of healing through the etheric body. The etheric body is an energetic layer that mimics the physical body. It is the life force or animating power of our physical body and it is the place where physical imbalances and disease first begin to exhibit before manifesting in the physical body. It is the template for the physical body, so healing must occur in the etheric body to permanently affect healing in the physical body. The physical body and the etheric body are important to our overall balance and health. If we encircle ourselves with too much negativity, whether it be through relationships or circumstances, eventually that wears on our etheric system and creates tears, ripples and holes in this part of our physical system. The result is a decrease in our immune system, in our abilities to sustain our physical system and eventually, the manifestation of diseases, such as colds or even cancer. The constant barraging of negative energy on the physical system, time after time, over time, is the cause of more serious illnesses. One way to build our etheric system is to recognize the importance of physical rest for the body and the process of mental and emotional maturation for this system to allow for healing on an energetic level. I have found that simple relaxation and taking time for the self, meditation, the simple act of breathing in chi or life force, playing at what we enjoy, are all ways to replenish the physical and etheric, life giving bodies. Another route is to enjoy the simple pleasure of receiving etheric energy as a result of attending a healing called Healing Sanctuary. I attended a school in the Georgia mountains called Delphi University. It is an amazing spiritual center and I found an equally amazing tool for healing at their Healing Sanctuary. So much so that I have joined forces with others in Saratoga Springs to bring a Healing Sanctuary to our area. The Healing Sanctuary at Delphi is dedicated to the infamous “man of Light” Mauricio Panisset. Mauricio was an incredible Brazilian healer who filled the individual with whom he worked (and the room) with Light. When he worked, physical Light came from his body to the individual who was receiving the healing. The Healing Sanctuary was created as a testament to Mauricio for his Love of all men and his dedication to healing. Now Healing Sanctuary will be a part of the Saratoga Springs area. I have studied with Mauricio’s wife, Kimberly Panisset Curcio, along with other educators at Delphi who lived and worked with Mauricio. My colleagues here in Saratoga, Nancy Kendall, Theresa Kennedy and myself will channel this high energy of the Healing Sanctuary and bring this healing opportunity to Saratoga Springs every third Friday evening at The

Healing Springs Center. We encourage you to come and experience the healing energy through this amazing energy exchange. Healing Sanctuary will be an open invitation of Love for anyone who feels called to come. It is important for you to be willing to know what you would like to receive as healing during your session and to allow yourself to to be open to receive it. Some people experience ‘healing’ on the table, some days or weeks later. Everyone is different. Our first Healing Sanctuary will take place at The Healing Spirit Center, 376 Broadway, L#1 the third Friday of every month beginning in April 2013 at 7pm. Individual table sessions are given to all who attend. Please set your intentions for what you want to receive, consistent with your highest good. There is no fee for this devotion but Love Donations are accepted. Please wear white or light colored clothing to enhance the healing experience. We treat this event as the deep spiritual experience it is and ask that you speak in a quiet respectful voice so others may continue to receive. Come and experience the beautiful spiritual gifts channeled by our gifted and devoted healers. Whether you desire physical, emotional, mental or spiritual healing, The Healing Sanctuary offers an opportunity for all to embrace healing. We are Many, yet we are One.
