Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you As many of you know, I have a horse named Tom. While searching for a horse, I met some that on paper were perfect. But none touched my heart in the way I was seeking. That is, until I introduced myself to an ex-racehorse named Tom’s Thunder. When I walked into his paddock, he came to me and hung his head directly in front of my heart. As a solid bay (brown), he did not look like the horse I expected to fall for. Yet, meeting him was like being reunited with a lost friend. We have been together for close to seven years now. In that time, we have worked cows, done ring work, practiced a variety of training techniques, survived two life-threatening illnesses, and traveled many trails with me on his back as well as by his side. Tom is a willing partner, though sometimes he lacks focus and or motivation. Is that him or me? Who knows? Like many close relationships, the lines between us are blurred, making most interactions like the chicken or the egg. This makes him a great mentor for me, as he is like a mirror. Luckily, I like what I see. That isn’t to say we don’t bicker or disagree; we do. Even so, when with Tom I know a sense of belonging that is rare these days. It is estimated that horses were domesticated around 3,000 or 4,000 BC. Even after so much time, they have retained a good portion of their natural instincts. Because horses are prey animals, they interact differently with the world than humans do as predators. Spending time with Tom teaches me to be more aware of my surroundings, effective collaboration and how to wordlessly communicate. I’d like to repay him by enhancing his life in return. That he comes to greet me upon arrival—sometimes leaving horse friends and grass behind—it seems I do. Tom raced on the flat track for 5 years, earning almost a half million dollars. The average life span of a horse is 25-33 years. Horses race young, so they often have many years to live at the end of their racing career. Just like a retiring pro football player. This is why I said yes when asked to join the board of ACTT Naturally, a new not-for-profit that will retrain and rehome thoroughbreds no longer racing (www.acttnaturally.org). Tom helps me grow as a human being. I would like to have a part in others finding such a relationship to open their hearts to. Recently, I went to a place called Earthlands-University of the Wild. I was able to spend time alone on the land there. Having been a student of Tom’s, I sensed my surroundings as a prey animal—merging with the habitat, along with the trees, plants, and birds. It is my belief that what the world needs and wants above all else, is for humans to connect to the earth’s wild rhythm, and know it as the wise, self-sustained, elder that it is. Perhaps, by spending more time listening to and learning from animals, we too will embrace domestication while remaining in harmony with the Earth. In Peace,

How do we heal the epidemic of depression and anxiety that is the dilemma of our modern age? Regardless of therapies available, the use of medications continues to increase. Reality check: What’s going on here? As spiritual beings having a human experience, we all have a plan for our lives before we’re born. We expect to overcome life’s challenges, but it’s harder than we thought it would be. We feel disconnected from our Guides and from Source. We abandon hope that we can be who our souls want us to be. Actt Naturally Launches a Better Way in Thoroughbred Retraining ACTT Naturally, a Saratoga-based not-for-profit, is launching a rehabilitation and retraining program for Thoroughbred horses when they can no longer compete at the racetrack. The program founded by Valerie Buck, a veteran racehorse exercise rider is based on natural horsemanship, and concepts developed by Buck both during and after her career on the track. “Through my extensive training with Pat Parelli and 28 years of experience in top racing stables, I have developed a program that can transform a racehorse to a safe and reliable mount or therapy horse.” said Buck from her farm in Salem, NY. “Through natural horsemanship, we can have much better adoption rates and life long homes for these often unwanted horses.”

Placing more Thoroughbred horses no longer able to compete on the track in good homes is of particular concern with many in racing at this time. The timing of ACTT Naturally’s inception coincides with Saratoga Racetrack’s 150th anniversary celebration, but also amidst much media coverage about horse slaughter in the United States. The organization will work directly with members of the racing industry to help reduce the number of horses leaving its racetracks that may be at risk of being sold for slaughter and human consumption, by retraining them for new careers and securing safe, productive lives for them. ACTT Naturally is a not-for-profit organization with pending 501(c)(3) status and operates with funding from private donations. ACTT Naturally’s mission is to gently transition thoroughbreds from racing careers to lead new productive lives. The ultimate goal is to yield retrained horses with the mental and physical balance necessary to continue purposeful lives and place them through thoughtful adoption. You can find out more about ACTT Naturally and read about Buck’s success in retraining and repurposing horses by visiting our website www.acttnaturally.com

Participants will be asked to commit to focusing their thoughts for 15 minutes a day for 30 days beginning January 1st 2014, while sending positive peaceful intentions to the City of Albany. The goal is to have a group of people focus their intention on reducing assaults in the City of Albany, NY. After the completion of the project, the statistics for the month of January 2014 and the following months will be compared to the numbers for the previous 5 years by State University of Albany Professor, Dr. John Foldy. To help people create a uniform meditative focus during the study there will be daily meditations offered through the internet on the website: www.AlbanyPeaceProject.com. “Because this is a community project, we are looking forward to having people from the Greater Albany vicinity participate says Bethany Gonyea who is inviting meditation leaders to become a part of the project by submitting individual meditations that will be posted daily for 31 days. Each leader can offer any meditation method they would prefer, as long as it follows some basic guidelines outlined in the intentional research. Lynn Mctaggert, author of the “Intention Experiment has studied some of the most effective healers and found that most all of them follow five general steps while offering their intentions, which include; 1) Centering in the present, 2) Opening the heart and connecting to others with compassion, 3) Stating a specific intention, 4) Mentally rehearsing the successful completion of the specific intention with all five senses, especially vision, and 5) Surrendering the intention to a Loving Intelligence that connects us all.

“This is a great way for meditation leaders to let people know about their meditation groups or businesses says Bethany Gonyea, founder of Numinous (www.numinousonline.com), a non-profit teaching organization that teaches individuals how to understand their nervous and skillfully lead their bodies into the more calm and sublime states that exist within all of us. Meditation leaders will have their contact information included in the study so that individuals will be able to contact meditation leaders directly. Individual practitioners are welcome to submit as well. Not all submissions will be accepted. Because the details of the study are still being defined, meditation leaders are not asked to record their meditation yet, but just to express their willingness to participate by contacting Bethany Gonyea at bethany@numinousonline.com. Meditation leaders are also needed to start meditation groups to help increase participation in the study. Please contact Bethany if you would like any support to start a meditation group, or if you are willing to offer other skill sets needed for the study including, videography, technical support, marketing efforts, and recruiting support. www.NUMINOUSONLINE.com

The New York- and southeast Florida-based author, coach, and workshop leader will present his “Spirit & Money: Prospering by doing what you Love,” class on Thursday August 22, from 7--9:30 PM, and his “How to Overcome Procrastination NOW” class on Friday August 23, from 7—9:30 PM. The cost of each seminar is $25 apiece when paid by three days or more before the event, $30 after. Registration is being handled by Diane Minutilli, who can be reached by phone at (518) 742-0452, or by email at minutilli@gmail.com. Prosperity Exercises that Work The nationally known seminar leader, Bayer will draw from his books, Prosperity Aerobics and Spirit & Money, to show people how to generate income by expressing their purpose in the world. He will also share a prayer that helps people generate unexpected income, and explain that spirituality and prosperity are not at all opposed to each other, but rather two sides of the same coin—a life lived in abundant fullness. Lastly, he’ll help those who are already doing what they love learn how to market their work better and sell with more innocence and effectiveness. Bayer will refer to his mini-books, How to Overcome Procrastination NOW! and Affirmations to End Procrastination, to provide both a curative and preventive approach to procrastinating. First, he shows participants how to cure one particular habit of procrastination by breaking big tasks into manageable smaller ones that students can make progress on several days each week, and reward themselves for doing the things they typically delay doing. This enables them to overcome their specific long-held habit of delay in a matter of a few days or sometimes a few weeks. The author also gives students a 15minute inner preventive workout that he calls “The Procrastination Aerobics” which empowers them in such a way as to make it very difficult for procrastination to rear its ugly head again in their lives.

What Is

Holistic Dentistry?

Dr. Aulicino few years ago during a visit with my Cardiologist, he inquired as to what I did for a living so I told him I practiced Holistic Dentistry. Finding this a bit amusing he said “what do you do treat people with herbs?” I sighed a bit as I realized that I couldn’t give him a summary for a specific technique to fix a problem in ten easy words. I didn’t quite know where to begin to communicate how I had lived for many years and then its application to Dentistry in particular. So that got me thinking of how do I express what Holistic Dentistry actually is.

A

In America the concept of Holism came out of the Edgar Cayce Health Readings of the mid 20th Century and it was the recognition of Body, Mind, and Soul and for the balance of all three for a state of health to be achieved, And dis-ease, meaning what is says, is a lack of ease, or disturbance in that balance. What the recognition of the above does is change the platform or paradigm from which we operate. In Dentistry for instance, when I was growing up it was assumed that some of us would occasionally get decay, that this was a normal hazard of life, and that the cure was effected by going to the dentist, have the decay (surgically

removed), drilled out, and the tooth repaired. So we are in a Battle, a fight against the ravages of decay which is out to get us (in this case our teeth) which is also our appearance, functional deterioration, self esteem, and overall health. It is a battle which must be Fought with the latest technology. What if there isn’t the necessity to fight but instead to restore balance. Mayo of “The Mayo Clinic” said over a hundred years ago, that he never saw a vibrantly healthy individual with a sick mouth. It seemed to him that decay had a systemic connection. It wasn’t just a local phenomenon, restricted to the tooth and saliva. Research from Weston Price of the Price Pottenger Foundation (Price was the dentist, Pottenger the physician of the team) was showing that locally grown food consumed by people in varied geographical locations throughout the world yielded healthier people without facial and skeletal asymmetries, no need for orthodontics, no impacted teeth, less than one tooth per person with decay. And , introduction of processed foods changed that picture to what we see today. He found that a slightly alkaline salivary pH left you decay immune and as it went down susceptibility to decay increased. There was a fluid flow thru the tooth in a nutritionally competent person that went inside out and when decay prone,

“In an holistic approach an authoritarian relationship has to be replaced with one where collaboration is established, so that the problem can be approached with partnering.” when outside in and this had a relationship to the Calcium Phosphorous ratio of the blood and therefore back to nutrition. Price was reversing decay nutritionally with supposedly a ninety five percent success rate. Science today is showing that decay can be reversed by applying alkaline material the decay. It seems that it is mimicking what the body can do for itself. Interestingly, our immune systems function at a higher level when we are slightly alkaline also, tying in the health of the mouth with the health of the body. The role of systemic inflammation, the contribution from the mouth, the connection with heart disease, & diabetes all seem to corroborate the interconnectedness with overall health and how reduction of that overall inflammation decreases periodontal disease and increases that state of well being. It all seems to validate Mayo’s observation about never seeing a vibrantly healthy individual with a sick mouth. There is so much more involving acupuncture meridians, and the teeth in line with the meridians, generally energetics and jaw position, and overall impact on the body it would be a digression

to go into these areas in such a short article. But the main point that this all comes to is that with a holistic approach the practitioner has to be in collaboration with the patient. What is put into the mouth impacts the whole body. In an holistic approach an authoritarian relationship has to be replaced with one where collaboration is established, so that the problem can be approached with partnering. If you are present to someone, you can really listen, and this involves being present with your whole self and many times the results can be startling. Quality of time spent has to be increased, pace slowed down, and technology humanized. I find that using a pre appointment relaxation chair time with headphones and tapes inducing a self induced relaxation state, for example can help reduce anxiety and set a tone for better communication. The Intra oral camera can also bring an invisible problem to a level of understanding and, therefore a foundation for a better experience and treatment outcome. Conscious

Aging

Practices that enhance quality of life in elderhood by Wendy Ball uring a Starbuck’s break I watch an elderly couple have an afternoon tea and pastry. They are attuned to each other, offering a comment here and there, a glance, a gesture of support. His eyes are full of enjoyment for the moment. The corners of his mouth turn up in a small smile. Her eyes are calm and attentive. They are both frail. He uses a cane. She has a tremor. Yet they have a look of contentment about them. They seem happy within their limits.

Healing Springs I #69 August—September, 2013

I feel inspired by this couple and begin to reflect on what it takes to accommodate the infirmities of age so gracefully; what it takes to remain positive and available to what life has to offer within the limits of one's elder reality. What can soften the edges of the inevitable need to let go - of driving, of the freedom of living in ones own house, of good sight, good hearing, good memory. The particulars of this challenge are or will be different for each of us. But let go we must, of things that are synonymous for most of us with freedom and quality of life. Many of us know elders for whom moments of contentment are few a far between. Their negative thoughts crowd out positive ones like invasive weeds. Their communication is full of irritation and blame. They appear to experience themselves as prisoner of their aging minds and bodies and victim of the actions or non-actions of others, Do we have any control over how we experience ourselves and others as elders? I believe so. I believe that mindfulness, prayer, gratefulness and other practices that are increasingly used in service to recovery and healing can make a huge difference to our emotional quality of life as elders, and I believe that it is important to anchor these practices while ones energy to initiate new things and to focus is still strong. Here are some of the practices I believe can make a difference to how we experience life as elders: Mindfulness Is about being aware of what is, here and now, in the moment, without thinking or evaluating, without reacting, being simply present to ones experience of self, others, circumstances. Gazing at a fern on ones table. Noticing the delicate pattern of leaves. Noticing the richness of green. Ones eyes move to an object close by…noticing color, texture, form.

Noticing an aesthetic response… pleasure. Noticing an ache…being, simply, present. Bringing a friendly curiosity to the contours of the ache. This quality of awareness when accompanied by curiosity and acceptance can make a limited life richer and more manageable emotionally. It helps reset the nervous system when reaction activates anxiety and/or black depressive thoughts. Relaxation Breathe (Herbert Benson) Breathe in slowly and deeply. On the outbreath think of a word or phrase that is calming, reassuring, nourishing, e.g. I am grateful for this life. Doing this for a minute or a few is a great way to start or end the day and re-sets the nervous system.

Gratefulness awakens one to the gift of life. It opens and nourishes the heart. It fosters loving response over negative reactions. Negative experiences can also be appreciated for carrying gifts of learning, tempering. An illness can carry within it the gift of slowing down and becoming available to things that are nourishing to ones soul. Compassion for self and others. The loving kindness prayer practice is a wonderful way to foster compassion: 1. Beginning with yourself, wish for yourself to be well and happy and free from fear. 2. No wonder the Buddha’s foundational insight is that life is about impermanence. How do we come into harmony with this? Mindfulness fosters ability to be simply present to whatever ones reality is We have a choice – to rail against what is lost or bring loving acceptance to our self care practices as the physical vehicle that is our body begins to fray. Impeccability is about resisting the urge born out of fear and anger to speak to others and about others with intent to hurt or diminish. Our emotional brains are wired to fight when we feel threatened and so we lash out in anger, or try to make ourselves right, or better, to protect ourselves from feeling powerless. Impeccability is about speaking the truth to ourselves and to others. It is hard work, but then everything about aging is hard work. The practice of impeccability prepares us to say what is needed to those we love at the end of our lives, releasing them to move on and releasing us to move into the beyond. Adrenal

FATIGUE by Michael Lenz ow many of you have experienced some or all of the following symptoms?:

H

• Feel tired despite getting adequate sleep • Crave sugary and/or salty snacks • Rely on stimulants such as coffee or caffeinated beverages to keep you alert • Have difficulty sleeping • Experience morning fatigue • Have difficulty bouncing back from a period of stress or illness If you’re shaking your head yes, you may be experiencing a condition known as Adrenal Fatigue. Adrenal fatigue occurs when your adrenal glands are functioning below their optimum level. Your adrenal glands are responsible for producing steroid hormones including cortisol, adrenaline, and aldosterone – hormones that are essential for a healthy and vital life. The adrenal glands help the body maintain a balanced state, particularly during times of stress. The role of the adrenal glands has changed little since the primitive days of our ances14 Healing Springs I #69 August—September, 2013

tors, when the “fight or flight” response could literally mean the difference between life and death. While the acute stressors that our ancestors faced has subsided, chronic stress has become much more prevalent. Chronic overwork and lack of relaxation has become the new normal. Adrenal fatigue is generally associated with prolonged stress or short periods of very intense stress. There are many things that can cause the adrenal glands to become overworked. Lack of sleep, work pressures, financial burdens, chronic infections, marital and family issues, all can place a burden on the adrenals, and often they can’t keep up with the demands of this chronic stress. They still function, but not at an optimal level. When this happens you can begin to experience adrenal fatigue. Most people with adrenal fatigue describe feeling tired throughout the day. They often need artificial stimulants such as coffee or caffeinated beverages to keep themselves alert. They can also experience weight gain especially around the abdomen, have trouble sleeping, and experience changes in their blood sugar levels. If you’re experiencing these symptoms, it’s certainly possible that you may be experiencing adrenal fatigue. It’s always a good idea to check with your doctor to see if there are other possible causes, such as thyroid issues, iron or B12 deficiency. We also recommend doing saliva testing to measure your cortisol levels. Often this test can confirm that your adrenal glands are tired and need help. The good news is that once it’s determined that you’re suffering from adrenal fatigue, there are some steps you can take to begin to give your adrenals a break and help them return to optimal performance. The most important step is to make sure your diet is providing you with the appropriate nutrients, especially protein, throughout the day. Eating smaller meals five to six times a day will provide

You’ve heard it said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and this is true, especially if you’re suffering from adrenal fatigue. Getting a healthy serving of protein into your body in the morning will help to keep your blood sugar stable and help avoid that mid-morning crash when you want to reach for a soda or cup of coffee. Reducing the stress in your life, while often easier said than done, is important as well. Try to find at least 15 minutes to relax and shut out the pressures of the day. Even a short walk can do wonders in burning off stress. Incorporating some form of exercise into your daily routine and making it a lifestyle change may take some getting used to in the beginning, but as you see the improvements in your physical and mental well being, you’ll be encouraged to make it a part of your life.

Most Excellent Life

by Annie Gregson hat are you putting up with? Your husband’s underwear on the floor? A job that leaves you feeling like a vampire’s had their way with your jugular vein? The overflowing unanswered inbox that inspires daydreams of running away from home? Putting up with things, tolerating, drains your energy, keeps you stuck, and wastes your time (and your life!). The good news is every toleration is fixable.

W

Okay, I can hear those thoughts a-churning “Yeah, right. I HAVE to keep the job I hate/clean up after my family/I don’t have time to organize the garage, closet, basement/ etc., etc., etc.” I beg to differ. Every single thing you do or don’t do is a choice you make. It may appear difficult, maybe even impossible, to see how to change things, to get unstuck, but you can eliminate tolerations. Keeping yourself toleration-free is a skill you can learn. We are taught not to complain, that life is difficult, don’t rock the boat, get along with others, be grateful, be understanding. All wonderful advice. But let’s not let these expectations get in the way of you learning how to stop tolerating so you can improve the quality of your life. Tolerating gives us energy. (Huh???) When you put up with something, it causes friction and this “heats up” your life. Briefly. Like a sweet Slurpee sugar rush. It’s a negative energy source that leaves you feeling sluggish and discouraged. Raise your standards, tolerate less and you begin using a new “cleaner” and perhaps more boring energy source to get through the day. Kinda like replacing that Slurpee with whole grains and veggies. Really tasty ones. The benefits of being toleration-free are happiness, more fun, more energy, more ease. • You will stop wasting time trying to manage situations that shouldn’t be there in the first place. • You will grow more quickly and make space to do more of what you love because you’re not distracted or bogged down by tolerations. • You will upgrade your community and find yourself spending more time with easy, fulfilling people. • You will be a model for your friends and family as to what is possible for them.

Zapping Tolerations Let’s start the ball rolling by focusing on your home.

“Identifying the specific things you are putting up with, then taking action and watching these energy drains disappear will free up time and energy.”

1

Make a list of 5 things you are tolerating about your home, whether or not you see a solution to each of them. Identify the 5 things you are most tolerating, big or small.

2 3 4

List the action steps you’ll take to zap the toleration and take back the energy they drain from you.

Commit further by picking a date by which each one will be handled and writing this down next to the action step. We all need help from time to time. Who can you enlist in helping you accomplish your task? What can they do to support you?

You can repeat this exercise using any number of categories, like work/career, family/community, relationships, health, creativity, wealth/prosperity, etc.

10 Steps to a “Toleration-Free” Life: 1. “Get” that putting up with things is good for NOONE! 2. “Get” that you’re getting juiced by tolerating things. 3. Be willing and committed to being toleration-free. 4. Make a list of 10 things you are tolerating at home. 5. Make the requests/take the actions to eliminate the above

6. Make a list of 10 things you are tolerating at work. 7. Make the requests/take the actions to eliminate the above 8. Stop complaining. Instead, make a strong request. 9. Invest $1,000 (or the biggest sum you can manage) to handle the tasks/chores that pain you. 10. Do steps 1-9 again, after you’ve done them once. Identifying the specific things you are putting up with, then taking action and watching these energy drains disappear will free up time and energy. Sure, you can yell, plead or withhold sex until your husband picks up his underoos but wouldn’t it be lovely to make a plan, take action and then celebrate this newfound time and energy together? (Oh, the possibilities!) I’d call that another tool to build yourself a most excellent life. In the next issue, we’ll meet, greet and tame the fear that keeps us stuck. Until then, have a beyond-beautiful, less toleratin’ summer. The makings of a good

Grassfed

Steak

by Karen Christensen here’s more to it than you think. In the early stages of the ‘back to grass’ movement, farmers put steers on grass and thought that was enough. Then they realized it was better for the animals and the pastures to use a ‘rotational grazing’ plan.

T

Now, we’ve come even further. We know that in addition to good feed, you have to pay attention to the genetics.

Open 7 Days, 9am to 8pm

In building the herd, you are always thinking three years out. It starts with which cow you breed to which bull. Registered animals, those whose lineage is known and recorded, will produce a more consistent product.

33 Phila Street Downtown Saratoga 584-4670

It is possible to breed for many different characteristics. You always want ‘calving ease’, especially for first-time mothers. You want good maternal instincts to see that calf through the first months. A nice, stocky frame is best for beef animals.

FourSeasonsNaturalFoods.com

Cows’ gestation is nine months. You have to take climate in to consideration when planning. Calves have an easier time if they arrive in spring instead of winter. If you have a bull on your property, he has to be separate from the ‘open’ cows until the right date. But cows are herd animals so he needs to have a few friends with him in the pasture. The logistics can get complicated. After birth, it takes two years for the beef animal to mature. That’s when the quality of feed becomes important. Especially in winter. Through the winter, they will need a mix of dry hay and fermented hay. The hay ferments in those white-wrapped bales you see in pastures. Fermented hay provides richer nutrients. The goal is to at least maintain but better yet, increase, the animals’ weight through the two years on pasture. If you were disappointed the first time you tried grassfed beef, think about trying it again. Farmers are better at the process these days. Ask about their practices before you buy. You may be very pleasantly surprised with your next grassfed beef experience. Karen Christensen is co-owner with Kevin Jablonski of Mack Brook Farm. They raise and sell grassfed beef on their 4th generation family farm in Argyle, NY. www.mackbrookfarm.com mackbrookfarm@mac.com, 518-638-6187

The work is effective for all ages, in a comfortable space, sometimes your own home, in continual dialogue with the BMC practitioner.

A session begins with a thorough assessment of symptoms, concerns and the story behind the visit. By feeling the tissue, observing movement and habitual patterns, the BMC practitioner can identify holding patterns, limitations in range, discomfort, and ease or lack of ease in a tissue or developmental pattern. The BMC toolbox for treatment involves dozens of different hands–on palpations, reflexes, righting reactions and more. Often the body cannot release a restriction without help, but once the body has a new experience with assistance, it will let go of the old pattern. It’s quite possible that nothing can impact your level of stress and overall health more than your relationships. Think of the nights you have found yourself wide awake, worrying about a child or parent. Remember a time when you were having a rocky period with a friend or intimate relationship. What did that pain or worry do to you energetically, emotionally and physically? By addressing the issues surrounding your relationships and making the changes that are within your control, you may find that your improved relationships will result in better overall health as your stress level drops. If you’re a woman, you may have been encouraged, if not trained, to be “nice”. This may have led you to get in the habit of accommodating others and the habit likely survived into adulthood. Maybe you’re the mom on the block who is the taxi for all the kids to and from activities, the one who always says YES when asked to contribute to the bake sale or volunteer. Maybe you’re the one in the family that has taken in an ailing parent. Maybe you’re the friend who is willing to receive calls in the middle of the night and stay on for hours. Even more stressful, maybe you’ve allowed yourself to be a doormat, convinced that if you are “nice enough” your husband, partner, boss or best friend will change their ways and be kind to you. Being a kind, loving, caring person is not a bad thing. It just doesn’t always serve your ability to be and stay healthy if you haven’t learned how to say NO. On the flip side, if you feel put upon, hate when others ask you for help, feel used, and often repeat the refrain “no good deed goes unpunished”, your habit may be saying NO. You may find that you have plenty of energy, but no close friends. Or you’re so busy working, your self-worth is wrapped up in your “doing” in the world. Taking responsibility for who you are in a relationship is key to developing healthy boundaries. This requires tapping into your heart and recognizing the qualities you desire in your relationships and then acting in a way that supports those qualities. When you

Join me at Wiawaka, Lake George July & August www.wiawaka.org “show up” differently, your relationships will change. This takes practice and doesn’t happen overnight. However, if you look at your life and relationships with love and curiosity, you can make the shift to relationships that are supportive to both of you, with a flow of giving and receiving. Remember, any conscious change begins with awareness. Here are a few things to consider: • Who are the people who are most important to you? This includes family and friends, co-workers, colleagues and acquaintances. Think of a word or two to describe your relationship [close, strained, contentious, competitive, loving, fun, co-dependent, etc.] • Look at the list again and ask yourself, “How does this relationship nurture or drain my energy?” What do you feel as you think about this person? What are the dynamics in the relationship? Do you have wobbly boundaries with this person? Give too much? Not give enough? • Remember that others will not change because you want them to change. Can you accept this person exactly as they are or do you try to manipulate the relationship? • Look at where you are taking too much responsibility for others. Sometimes the tendency to do too much, getting involved another’s life and drama, is birthed from an unconscious desire to avoid the issues in our own lives. [Remember the old saying that if you are giving advice to someone else it’s probably because you need to take it!] In taking too much responsibility, you may actually be disempowering your loved one. • If you have trouble saying NO because you want to be of value, liked or don’t want to hurt another’s feelings, you are doing a disservice to yourself AND them! Learning to say NO takes

practice. You can put a note on your computer and phone that says, “I’ll get back to you”, so that you have time to think about it. If you automatically say NO, do the same thing. • Listen to your heart and show up authentically and honestly in your relationships. Taking care of your needs first means that you will have more energy and give to others from a place of love rather than perceived obligation. Consider that if a relationship isn’t good for you, likely it isn’t good for the other person. If the relationship is really important to you and you are having issues, find a counselor or coach to support you. If you reflect on the relationship and find that it really isn’t that important any longer, let it go with love; it is time to be grateful and move on. You can let it go in a loving way, affirming that everyone who comes into your life and leaves again has left a gift. The same may be said about you. Ask the ractitioner

Q

What are some simple measures that you could recommend to boost or maintain my immune system in order to get through what I am experiencing as a difficult allergy season?

Chiropractor; Lynn Allison You will not be able to avoid pollen unless you live in a bubble so the best response is to boost your body's immune system prior to the season and battle exposure to the pollen. With all the rain and hot weather we have been having, the grass and fall plants will be abundant and healthy so pollen counts will be high. I have been seeing people who have not had allergies but are reacting this year. You can go to The National Allergy Bureau to find out the daily pollen count or the Weather Channel. Our immune system starts in the gut so Probiotics are a must and research is showing that the more varieties of probiotics in a supplement, the better. We are supposed to be teeming with bacteria(trillions) and studies of most Americans flora lacks in number and variety. They also have reported that vaginal birthed children have a higher intestinal flora than caesarian birthed children so if you are pregnant and have seasonal allergies, try for a vaginal birth. There are great midwives in the area to help you. Vitamin C, Quercitin and Astragalus help with mucus membrane inflammation as well as consistent use of a Neti pot. Membranes in your nose and eyes capture the pollen so keeping them washed out can diminish the reaction and having strong mucus membranes will go a long way. 24 Healing Springs I #69 August—September, 2013

As a beekeeper, I take 1 Tbl of my honey every day because I feel it helps me with developing a desensitization to the local pollens, raw honey contains traces of pollen. Herbally, my go-to treatment for symptom relief is Stinging Nettles. Nettles grows locally as a weed and stimulates a antihistamine response when touch or consumed. I suggest people start taking it as a preventative, consistently, when they know their allergen will be starting. So spring pollen allergy patients would start nettles on the spring equinox and stop after the trees have budded. Butterbur has been shown to be as effective as an antihistamine. “An NCCAM-funded literature review reports that in a clinical trial of 125 participants, butterbur was just as effective as a commonly used oral antihistamine for allergy symptoms such as itchy eyes.” It should not be used by pregnant women or anyone with a known allergy to the daisy family since it is part of that family. In the raw form it contains a compound that can stress or damage the liver so be sure to get “PA free” capsules. There is the possibility of testing for food intolerances caused by intestinal flora imbalances that may be overloading the immune system and then the pollen overwhelms the body. Try the above first and consider getting tested if symptoms get worse. Lynn Allison, DC uses a combination of Craniosacral therapy, nutrition consultation, kinesiology and chiropractic in her 20 year practice in the Capital Region. She has a website www.knotdr.info and can be contacted at knotdr@juno.com or 518-268-9542.

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell At the outset, the question of whether you are having an immune response, that is to say an allergic response is a difficult one to answer with certainty. There are many immune responses, at least in my limited understanding. One is the allergic, another

is an inflammatory response to certain stimuli. The latter does not involve histamine. At a personal level, based on recent blood tests, I have an inflammatory response to quite a number of foods, as well as some fungus and environmental chemicals. I do not suffer from the typical histamine response to airborne irritants, though admittedly I find myself having a fatigue reaction when the pollen counts are high. But to address your question more directly, (and here my bias will show) to assist your body's immune system it is important to maintain a healthy seasonal diet. There may be quite a lot controversy about GMO foods, but the bottom line is that we have no idea of the long term effect of "messing with Mother Nature". Eating organic as much as possible, eating locally so you are eating foods that have been ripened on the tree, vine, or bush, and eating lightly is a start. Secondly, limit the quantity of flesh products in the summer. The body does need it as much as in the winter. AND...drink, drink, drink lots of water. Even though you may not appear to perspire, you are still loosing fluid. Replenish it. Lastly, exercise. Keeping the fluids moving through the body helps to eliminate toxins. Sedentary life styles allow for the build up of toxins, which leads leads to stress on the body’s ability to respond to foreign loads, such as grass pollens. None of this is say that you may not have a hereditary predisposition to allergies, but limiting loads on the body will reduce the responses that would be typical for you. Finally, pay attention to your body. Your responses to what you ate yesterday, may not be obvious, but it is there for you to test the theory. If you suspect a food MAY be a problem, test that assumption through an elimination or rotational diet plan. Discontinue the food for long enough to fell better. Then try it again, and watch whether the symptoms return. Your body will tell you, it simply needs you to pay attention.

by Ann Carey Tobin, M.D cute inflammation is an effective, albeit somewhat unpleasant, mechanism for self-healing. It maintains tissue homeostasis (balance in the body systems), and serves as an adaptive repair response to insults to the body. When faced with infection, toxins and other bodily injuries our healing system releases pro-inflammatory molecules. These biochemical messengers dilate blood vessels, mobilize white blood cells, and trip off other cascades of biochemicals that result in the fever, warmth, swelling, redness and tenderness of the healing process. Fortunately, when all goes well, this process modulates itself through the release of anti-inflammatory messenger molecules that turn off the inflammation.

A

One of the hottest topics of research in disease is inflammation that does not turn off–chronic inflammation. It is considered a leading culprit in chronic disease. A continuous flooding of inflammatory chemicals results in a persistent immune response, and often obvious damage to tissues and organ systems; such as seen in arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and asthma. It can also be an insidious, “silent” process manifested in such diseases as cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome and diabetes, obesity, autoimmune disease, dementia, osteoporosis, and cancer. Inflammation is involved in all three phases of the development of cancer: initiation, promotion and progression. In addition, cancer will cause inflammation. Considering the significant role of inflammation in this frightening disease it is fortunate that there are some well-researched and safe botanicals that are demonstrating anti-inflammatory qualities. In addition, they appear active at the various phases of cancer prevention and development.

Turmeric Turmeric (Curcuma longa), a root, is known as a healthy food and spice, long used as a medicinal in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine practices. Research demonstrates that turmeric is a potent antioxidant and increases the activity of glutathione. It serves as an anti-inflammatory that suppresses the activity of NF-ÎB , down regulates COX-2, and inhibits 5-LOX and TNF-·–all pro-inflammatory messenger molecules intimately

involved in the genesis and progression of cancer. In nearly 100 human clinical trials turmeric is demonstrating direct anti-cancer activity by modulating tumor growth cell factors and turning on tumor suppressor genes that tend to “go into sleep mode” * as we age. In addition, preliminary data seems to indicate that it may allow for reduction in chemotherapy or radiation doses, while protecting normal tissue. Note, however, at this point the advice is to avoid concomitant use of turmeric with the chemotherapeutic agents Adriamycin and the cyclophosphamides. In its powdered form only 2-5% of the turmeric is the bio-active curcuminoid complex. Of this complex 70-80% is curcumin, considered the most active principal within the powder. Curcumin is poorly available (bio-available) to the body’s tissues without modification. While cooking or dissolving in oil may enhance absorption, there are a few modified products available that should be considered when using curcumin to achieve therapeutic benefit. BCM-95, Meriva, and Longvida are patented brands often used in various curcumin products. Turmeric has a good safety profile, but an individual should consider titrating the dose up to tolerance to avoid potential gastrointestinal intolerance, and treatment should be discussed with your health care provider; especially if consideration is being given to the higher doses recommended for active anti-cancer therapy. To add to the anti-inflammatory profile it seems that turmeric has synergistic effects with Boswellia and resveratrol.

Boswellia serrata Boswellia serrata is another Ayurvedic herb. It’s essential oil is is one of my favorites, Frankincense. Much of the research on this botanical is focusing on the active principle of a gum resin, abbreviated as AKBA. Boswellia is also demonstrating activity against the proinflammatory molecules of 5-LOX and NF-ÎB. In addition, it has been shown to significantly support expression of messenger molecules that suppress tumor growth. Recommendations for the therapeutic use of Boswellia include using a product that utilizes AKBA in its formula.

Resveratrol Resveratrol is a phytonutrient found in grapes and other berries. It demonstrates antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. Resveratrol appears to exert its effects at multiple levels by inhibiting various enzymes that synthesize pro-inflammatory mediators, and inducing the expression of messenger molecules that are anti-inflammatory and suppress tumor formation. It also suppresses genes that promote tumor formation. To optimize the therapeutic benefit of resveratrol look for a transresveratrol product, and consider combining it with quercetin.

nutrition, lack of exercise, poor stress management, environmental toxins/chemicals and obesity. While it is a blessing that we have allies from the natural world to help us on our journey, it is still vitally important that the foundations of an antiinflammatory diet and lifestyle be given priority. Be well.

Trusting Your Heart by Matthew Goodemote t started when I was 4 years old. I Went for a walk in the Adirondacks, by myself, following the only guidance I knew, my heart. It was the first time my parents left all 5 of us at my grandparents farm, that happened to be partially in the Adirondack Park. I remember clearly walking through the woods and being fully immersed in my surroundings, never once feeling fear or regret. To me I was just going for a walk. To my family and the community, I was a 4 year old boy that was “lost!”

I

Apparently I was gone for several hours. Time was not something I knew and can only say that I was just fully present in the now. When no one could find me anywhere they could think to look, the community was called in. My Grandmother knew a lot of people and she was able to amass a small army of people to search the cornfields. I went over the hill and through the woods, but no where near Grandmother's house. When I finally came home...I knew where I was without ever having been there before. To this day I could take you on the path I took some nearly 40 years ago. When I finally went home, I walked over the hill and saw a bunch of people in the fields and came up to a woman who asked “which one are you?” I told her and she started screaming “I found him...I found him!!” But inside me I remember thinking, “But I wasn't lost?!”

I'm not sure why this happened, but it turns out to have been a major event in my life and has shaped what I have since come to know as a very important realization. But before I can tell you that story, I need to tell you another one first. I have had a very interesting life that when told in its entirety seems to have been guiding me all along to the truth, not “a truth” but “thee truth.” I won’t share all those events but I will tell you that in the early 2000’s I felt a call to move back home to the town I grew up in. This call seemed totally bazaar because at the time I seem to have the dream life. I was making a lot of money, had a beautiful new wife with 2 beautiful healthy children, I was a leader in my industry and was healthy. Moving “home” meant no income, a crappy apartment in a depressed area where more people are leaving than coming. Never-the-less, I felt compelled to follow that calling. I somehow knew that I was to build a community ‘wellness’ facility and that I was to do this within 5 years. So, in 2004, I started a practice and by 2008, I had a staff of 45 people and my clinic was seeing routinely 135-150 patients per day. At the same time, I was deeply engaged in Spiritual pursuits seeking to know who I was and to become ‘enlightened.’ Along the way I met and had one-on-one meetings with Eckart Tolle, Kim Eng and Gangaji. I was blessed with opportunities to meet

them face to face and talk to them directly. I was diving deeper and my quest could not be contained until I found what I was looking for. Along the way I experienced amazing moments and metaphysical experiences. But the “I AM” eluded me. In 2009, while on vacation in Denmark, I was reading Papaji and a major shift in my perception took place. To this day I have difficulty describing exactly what happened and what I saw, but I often refer to it as a moment of total clarity. EVERY question, worry or fear I had ever had came up and one by one “The Truth” answered them and I laughed a deep guttural belly laugh. In fact I couldn’t stop laughing for hours. I mean hysterically laughing without stopping for HOURS!. I knew something important happened and that I needed to follow it...whatever “It” was. My life situation required I go home and back to work. Yet, I seemed incapable of working. Whatever happened had shifted my perception so much that I couldn’t find a reason why I should do anything anymore. Eventually I went back to Denmark, figuring I needed to go back to where this happened. The first weekend there I met a man who had just come back from Portugal where his teacher, Ganga, lived. Ganga had been Papaji's wife before he died. So, off to Portugal I went and through another series of connections, I found myself on top of a mountain, in a Yurt meeting with Ganga. The events leading to the meeting were so unexpected that my guard was down. The instant I met with Ganga in Satsang my mind was caught unprepared to sabotage the meeting. I started to share my life story with Ganga, when she interrupted and said, “did you come all the way to Portugal to tell me a story, or is there something I can do for you?” I told her how desperately I wanted to know the Self, the real Self and how that knowledge seemed to stay just outside my grasp. She asked if I could drop my story for an instant, to drop all my reasons for not letting go fully for a minute, less than a minute....an instant was all that was needed. I was in a stupor trying to comprehend what I had learned and what she was pointing at, when I flashed back to being a boy of 4 years walking in the woods. In that moment, I could feel the presence that was there when I was 4 and knew it was never not there. This was another shift in my reality and I knew the self. Sharing what I realized with Ganga, she smiled and said, “That's it!” To which I replied, “but I’ve known that my whole life!” Causing me to laugh and laugh for several hours.

meeting. At the beginning we were asked to “speak from the heart.” For some reason being given permission to do this has caused a flood of emotion and a series of events. All of which seem to be a familiar reminder of the miracles that happen when we take a leap of faith and lead with the heart instead of the head. I just opened my second physical therapy practice, this time in Saratoga. But I have been struggling in a way, because I am simply no longer interested in promoting myself. My first business grew, in large part, to my ability to brand myself and promote my philosophy/belief systems. But since 2009 I have been experiencing a crumbling of my egoic structure in epic proportions. I have sought the council of Adyshanti, a spiritual teacher, that offered me no advice, just confirmation that my breakdown was merely what happens after such shifts in reality. I have felt completely out of sorts for months because any direction I try seems to fall apart. Setting goals or improving something are linked to the ego. Even moments of clarity where the TRUTH (God, Universe, Great Spirit or any other name we give it) are clear only in the moment they happen. These reality shifts have led me to the confusion that comes when we try to resolve issues of the ego. Because the ego acts like the Hydra from Greek Mythology where the hero is confronted with the dilemma of TWO new heads for every ONE head that is cut off. The ego’s “roots” are a maze of more and more roots causing us to misdirect by “fixing” or “loving” phantoms that seem real but are merely figments of our imagination. So I am left with this seemingly innocuous statement to “follow your heart” as the only guidance we ever need and should ever follow. Our heart as they say, is the doorway to “TRUTH” and if we want to walk the walk and live the TRUTH, we have only to trust and then follow the heart. So off I go...my journey that started at 4 was really the end...it just took me nearly 40 years to realize it!

The No-Calorie Myth of Artificial Sweetners by Sarah A LoBisco, ND n my website, I discussed the recent downgrade of Splenda’s safety issued by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CPSI) in mid-June. CPSI changed this artificial sweeteners rating from “safe” to “caution” due to various inclusion studies on its health risk (http://dr-lobisco.com/thedanger-of-the-artificial-sweet-tooth-the-trump-on-weight-loss/).

With respect for the power of belief and the placebo effect, please don’t let the following article stress out your system and create gnarly biochemical responses. This information is provided in order for you to make wise and conscious decisions on what to put in your body. My goal is to help you BREAKFREE from symptoms and diseases and move back into a truly sweet life. Splenda is synthetically connected to chloride ions, making it difficult for the body to process. According to Dr. Mercola, your body does not have an enzyme to break this chemical down. He cites other examples of toxic compounds that are synthetic and covalently bound to chloride compounds: DDT, PCBs and Agent Orange Although, it is claimed to be non-caloric, some studies indicate only about 15% of Splenda is absorbed. The result of this can be inflammation from toxic byproducts. This can make the body store fat in order to sequester these substances and help protect you. In addition, due to their inability to signal the release of satiating hormones, artificial sweeteners can also lead to weight gain by tricking the brain into feeling dissatisfied. This will leave the person craving more candy with their diet soft drink. (Read more on ShareCare: www.sharecare.com/question/artificial-sweeteners-gain-weight). Here are three dietary suggestions to try if you feel addicted to artificial sweeteners: Elimination - Try elimination or decrease consumption of these chemicals for a few weeks. You can then reintroduce them and see if symptoms return. If so, you may be sensitive. (Note: Full elimination from the diet is ideal in order to see the most effect).

Eat Whole Foods - Sugar can be addictive and make you want it over the healthy foods that would satisfy you. Therefore, eat whole foods that don’t trick your biochemistry. They contain powerful phytonutrients that speak tender lovin’ words to your cells. For example, sometimes cravings for sugar are actually a cry out from the body of a deficiency in minerals or protein. It can also be an indication of yeast of sugar sensitivity. Check out this study’s conclusions: In this study, premenopausal overweight and obese women assigned to follow the Atkins diet, which

He explains this “Losing weight by limiting pleasure is like trying to stop smoking by not breathing. We can never increase the body’s metabolic capacity by limiting what is essential to life. “The key to pleasure’s powerful effect in balancing your appetite is that it promotes a physiologic relaxation response. The times we overeat most are when we’re anxious, stressed, or unaware. A relaxed, pleasured eater has natural control. A stressed eater produces more circulating cortisol - our main stress hormone. What’s amazing is that cortisol desensitizes us to pleasure. When you're in fight or flight response and trying to escape the hungry wolf,
