Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you It’s early morning and I am waking up at Earthlands in Petersham, Massachusetts. Last night I was alone here. The sky was clear as it turned from blue to black. At dusk, I sat with a very old oak tree, hoping to touch the elder’s sacredness. First my habits got in the way of any ancient wisdom, as I sent texts and checked my email. Eventually, I turned off the phone and played my flute for the tree. As the stars began to dance, I moved from under the oak’s branches to sit in the open space next to a bullfrog pond. In the distance a Barred Owl called. Answering with my flute we played call and repeat. I wasn’t able to exactly match the rhythm of the owl, but with each phrase I got closer. Listening carefully, I began to notice that the owl was also changing its tune slightly, making it a bit closer to mine. Recognizing this, I was amazed and in love with the world. The local coyotes eventually joined in the song, their voices coming from every direction. As if all this wasn’t beautiful enough, two shooting stars ran across the sky. There and then, I knew a sense of belonging to all that lives. This connection was rooted in the simple truth that we are alive—breathing, moving, feeling, loving. Flash forward a couple weeks and that experience was a memory, rather than alive in my being. Lingering around me was the question of what in the human-created world allows me that feeling of belonging. Then I went to Farm Aid at SPAC. Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp organized the first Farm Aid concert in 1985 to raise awareness about the loss of family farms and to raise funds to keep farm families on their land. Dave Matthews joined the Farm Aid Board of Directors in 2001. As if the mission wasn’t exciting enough, their benefit is a concert featuring the above artist along with various other musicians such as Jack Johnson and Amos Lee. At the concert, I was flooded with hope and love, as the music brought us all to a shared experience. Humans have the capacity for greatness and too often we allow our habits to cloud our experience of unity and compassion, just as I did at the beginning of the night at Earthlands. What habits get in your way of fully experiencing the life that animates you? Electronics are one possibility, some other less obvious examples might be; comparing your life to other’s, busyness, worrying, staying safe, wanting approval, believing you know best, wishing for what isn’t, holding back forward movement, ignoring your dreams and so on. Living is an act of expression and participation. Let us show the world that humans can connect to all that is. That we can work with life, not just bully it to conform to our comfort and convenience. We all do this in a unique way, so find your course, be proud of it and let your joy spill out. In peace and awe,

Community Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network Upcoming Programs The Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network, or SIMEN, has two upcoming programs scheduled. Both will occur at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry St., in the Community Room, and are free and open to the public. The first program occurs on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 6:30 pm and is entitled, “The Process of Awakening: Self-Discovery, Surrender and the Roll of Thunder.” Self-discovery is the ultimate goal of spiritual seekers and must remain at the forefront for any lasting shift to occur. What comes after the shift is a "process of awakening." During this process, the egoic structure is fully destroyed, which allows the True Self to emerge and remain as the uninterrupted presence. Healing Springs I #70 October-November, 2013 6

This transformation is nothing like what we expect and often the very thing that led to the moment of awakening disappears and one is left without direction. Here no methods will offer any assistance and the only thing that helps this process is fully surrendering. Presenter Matt Goodemote will point to discovering your true nature, and how to emerge through the "process of awakening." The second program occurs on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 6:30 pm, and is entitled “Hungry for Change,” and is a free movie screening of the award winning film. This documentary interviews experts in the health, food, nutrition and culinary fields. Topics include: how we get hooked by the food and diet industry without realizing it (and why fad diets will never work); causes of sugar cravings; the truth about processed, fats, and convenience foods; the reason why diet soda is so addicting; how to leverage the power of your mind for you; juicing; and the importance of selfcare and self-love After the program, local Registered Dietitian and Yoga Instructor Pamela Malo will facilitate a discussion. For more information on either program, call 210-1557.

by Wendy Ball s I read a blurb on Tara and Daniel Goleman’s Mind Whispering workshop I noticed they were bringing in Rob Sadowski, a natural horsemanship trainer. Intrigued, I googled him and soon found myself entranced as I watched a video of him coaxing a horse to walk backwards 35 feet, around an obstacle, and backwards into a barn and then, backwards, into a particular stall. He had no rope. He occasionally picked up and lightly held a few strands of hair from his horses tail, to simply orient, he said. He never stopped talking, in a friendly relaxed voice, responding to the flick of an ear, a small roll of the eye with reassurance.

A

I began to think about what I experience when something triggers anxiety in me and I have the impulse to avoid doing something I have decided to do. I think of the self talk I become aware of in those moments, i.e. if I can muster awareness of it: "this won't work, you don't know what you're doing, go eat something or find something else to do...." Is this kind of self talk familiar to you? Often I give in to the self-talk. I consider myself successful when I "hold" myself to the task. This brings up images of a teacher in 1st or 2nd grade declaring that I will sit at my desk until my task is done, or a parent declaring that I will sit at the table until I have eaten the dreaded vegetable. Then I thought of my mind as a horse, and myself as a horse whisperer. How would it be if, instead of hobbling my mind or forcefully roping it in to performing I would notice the hesitation and talk to my mind in the same calm reassuring voice Rob uses on his horse: "I know you feel anxious because you are doing something unfamiliar and you are putting yourself on the line but you can do this one little step at a time and you know how good you will feel when you can say “I did it!”........ I was fairly certain in that moment that I understood what the Goleman’s meant by “mind whispering.” Most of us have heard about horse whispering or natural horsemanship based communication and connection between human and horse as opposed to forceful control of horses by humans. Understanding of horses as flight animals has lead to an emphasis on reassurance and rapport building.

“Mindfulness

practice enhances

our ability to be aware of what's happening and to respond constructively.” Our human nervous system activates emotional responses based on three different kinds of survival impulses: fight, flight, and freeze. Management of these emotions comes from our higher thinking centers. Basic brain literacy helps us understand what's going on when we are emotionally highjacked and end up reacting destructively or in ways that do not support our goals. Learning something about the handful of ways human's tend to defensively manage threatening experience supports recognition of what's going on. Mindfulness practice enhances our ability to be aware of what's happening and to respond constructively. Mind Whispering , as Tara Bennet Goleman has conceived of it, combines these things along with principles of natural horsemanship as a way of returning to a state of secure connection with ourselves and others when we find ourselves acting in ways that are ineffective and destructive. She invites us to "join up" with ourselves with awareness and gentleness rather than attempting to forcefully control our problem behaviors. References: ‘Mind Whispering’, by Tara Bennet Goleman HorseMindShip is the name of Rob Sadowski’s program. Wendy Ball LMHC has a private therapy practice in Albany. She is certified in EMDR and Hakomi therapies and is currently pursuing certification in shamanic energy healing from the 4 Winds Society.

You are your Music! by Jill Mattson usic makes you feel – it interacts with your emotions. Everyone has snapped their fingers to a lively beat, and relaxed to the soothing sound of the ocean. We all experience sound waves interacting with our emotions. Sound waves don’t isolate our emotions and ignore all the rest of the waves in our bodies. Sound waves interact with all of the waves in close proximity. That is simply science!

M

Sound waves interact with our brain waves, taking them to alpha, beta, theta and delta ranges. How significant is this? When operating at certain brainwaves, our bodies produce healthy chemicals and repair our bodies. At other brain waves, one can quit smoking with greater ease. In short, controlling a population’s brain waves shapes their behavior and influences their health. Focusing on this presents a whole new way of looking at our world. Sound can help or harm us. We must be aware of the power of sound - for our own good. Sound can be used as a weapon and can slowly make a person sick. We are vulnerable, if sound is used to control us. This can be done without our knowledge, making us puppets.

How about our physical health? Does sound impact that? Researcher Sharry Edwards demonstrated that if she plays the frequency associated with the supplement niacin, then the listener’s face flushes - without taking the pill. This makes sense as we ingest sounds in our ears and skin. Perhaps sound interferes with neurotransmitters or other signals in the body. Sound is invasive! With Sharry Edward’s free nanovoice.org software, a Fast Fourier Transformer breaks your voice into component pitches, letting you see how your voice’s component frequencies change after taking a pill or eating. This strengthens the connection between what you eat and frequencies in our body’s symphonies. One might question why people haven’t noticed that sound interacts subtly with matter. Sound waves are subtle energy, with tiny influences. We have to listen to the very same tone for a long time to notice its impact. In the mean time we hear different sounds that can cancel each other out. Think of running water on a rock. Of course the water runs off and the rock remains the same. The force of the water is miniscule compared to the strength of the rock. However after gazing at the Grand Canyon, it becomes clear that the pliable water flow does change the rock slowly but surely the water carves mountains.

And so it is with the tiny waves of sound. Slowly, but continually they shape and mold us … just like the relentless impact of ocean waves that grind small pebbles into sand. The use of sacred and uplifting music impacts us all far more than we ever dreamed. Right along with good nutrition is good music – for a better tomorrow! We are what we eat, but equally we are what we listen to! Assuming that sound waves intermingle with waves in our body, how do we know what kind of music to listen to? Music with rhythms that match a healthy heart rate improves our well being, because our heart matches the beat. Studies show that rock and heavy metal music exposure can kill a plant, while classical music stimulates the plant’s growth. Even more intriguing is that recorded sounds of nature improve plant growth more than classical music. Mother Nature’s lullabies are the most healing sounds for plants. Ancient people suspected this to be so - as they observed numeric patterns that repeatedly occur in nature. .. such as patterns found in a bee hive, a sea shell or a galaxy. They observed Mother Nature’s own signature and converted these numbers to music. They also listened to the “sounds of the stars.” Ancient music reflected numeric structures found in Heaven and Earth. Even their musical scales, upon which all music was played, incorporated nature’s fingerprints. Ancient music was controlled by the governments – to consistently maintain these beneficial patterns. It is difficult to imagine this today with the great freedom that we enjoy to listen to anything that we want, but this was not so in ancient times. For

www.peacefulinspirations.net

example in ancient Egyptian art there were NO changes in any aspect of it during 3,000 years. Really? Today, art changes day by day. Long ago no creativity was tolerated. This practice can be observed in stone art that has survived many years, while the memorized or improvised music perished. However, ancient China’s Department of Measurement regulated and policed the length of musical instruments to control the pitches the population heard. This is evidence that music was controlled – just like art. Creativity was not acceptable in art or music and in fact was considered dangerous, akin to our perception of terrorism today. Sages of many great civilizations warn of danger when new vibratory patterns (music) are heard by its citizens – they strived to preserve their blessed sonic patterns copying nature and the stars that uplifted and stabilized their citizens. Some musicians today are replicating ancient techniques to tune to the vibratory patterns found in nature. The author has been utilizing these ancient practices in her music by incorporating Fibonacci, Solfeggio, flower frequencies and star tones and elements into her music. The quest to regain another level of health through sound has begun, and cannot be stopped. Jill Mattson has spent the past 20 years researching Vibratory Sound Energy for healing and a wide array of other remarkable uses. She specializes in Sound Secrets of Ancient Civilizations. She has written three books on the subject. Mattson composes and produces her own CD's employing Sound Healing techniques & energies, plus her original musical scores. Her latest CD, Deep Wave Beauty, recently won a silver COVR award for best specialty CD of 2012. www.jillswingsoflight.com, www.musicforbeauty.com. #70 October-November, 2013 I Healing Springs 11

Hypnosis in NOT relaxation

I

t’s interesting how many clients connect hypnosis and relaxation as if they go hand in hand and one is required for the other to happen. Yes, we hypnotists do use the suggestion ‘relax’ but that is not hypnosis, rather, following the suggestion to ‘relax’ can be the gateway into hypnosis. I had a client who was upset with me after the session because I had hypnotized her in the folding chair she first sat in and never got moved to the recliner. The fact that the fear that she had come to release was apparently gone because while in hypnosis she was able to play with, talk to, and even touch the little insects she had previously been so deathly afraid of, was forgotten. Somehow it didn’t occur to her how well she was doing because she had been previously conditioned to expect relaxation. Had I been able to work with her again, after checking that the fear had been released, I certainly would have given her the recliner relaxation she wanted, not because it’s necessary but because that’s what she came for. Yes, many times it does feel very relaxing to be in hypnosis but don’t be fooled, hypnosis is not relaxation. As a hypnotist, it’s important to give the client what they came for while being flexible enough to use their expectations to reinforce a successful outcome to their problem. This client had been conditioned that relaxation was part of hypnosis. She had gone to other hypnotists and been relaxed but not successful in overcoming her fear. As we cleared her fear, the fear became less important than the relaxation she had expected from hypnosis. It was important to separate the two in order to address the presenting problem, and while that was cleared, work on the other issues related to the problem. This approach will help empower the client when they confront new issues in the future.

“Hypnosis is about learning that we have the power inside us to solve our own problems.” Hypnosis is about learning that we have the power inside us to solve our own problems. Yes, at times, we do need help from the outside. That’s where hypnosis can help us unlock our own hidden talent and potential. The aha moment that comes when the client discovers that they can indeed act differently; respond to stimulus in a beneficial rather than harmful manner, is the power of client-centered hypnosis. Relaxation is only a wonderful byproduct and tool that is actually beneficial in and of itself, but not required for a successful outcome to a problem. Listening by Matthew Goodemote or the past 16 years I have focused on increasing my knowledge and improving my clinical skills to ensure I am doing all I can to help my patients with their back pain. But in the end what I have found to be the most valuable tool we have is “listening.”

sations are telling you, how they are guiding you and to actually listen to them and the guidance they offer.

There are two types of listening I am referring to, (1) the patient listening to their body and (2) the therapist listening to the patient. These may seem like common sense, but there is more to it than meets the eye.

In my practice I use several examples to clarify what I mean when I talk about “listening to the body.” I have found that the knowledge I learned helps me to understand what it going on in the body, but the most important information comes from the patient themselves that are experiencing the symptoms and the affects the symptoms are having on their bodies.

F

I would like to establish common language so you understand what exactly I mean and then what specifically you can do to learn to “listen to your body.” I must say that I have had patients that come to me and say, “I know my body” but when asking specific questions about their body they are unable to provide clear answers. I have also treated a number of patients that in fact were able to answer about their body quite well, but were unable to “listen” to their body and follow the guidance the body offers. I have my best results with the patient by not allowing their “thinking” to override what wisdom their bodies are telling them…what they are feeling. For example yesterday I was treating a patient that has had a recent episode of severe lower back pain. On the first visit she told me that when she tried an activity she loved but her back didn’t feel “quite right” so she stopped. This is an example of her listening to her body. After sharing this with me she told me another story about how she was working in her garden and was bent over, and “even though I knew I should stop because my back didn’t feel quite right, I kept going.” This is an example of not listening. The result here was a terrible night of tossing and turning and little to no sleep. It’s one thing to know that something isn’t quite right in your body and it is entirely different to be able to discern what the sen-

This is what I mean by listening. It is recognizing the body is alerting you to pay attention and then actually following what the body allows you to do.

The bottom line is the body is talking to us constantly but often we have learned to ignore it because we “think” some activity is more important that what the body is asking us to do. When we ignore what we are being told by our body we’ll eventually be lead into more problems. One of my favorite quotes comes from Confucius. He said: “Tell me and I forget. Show me and I remember. Involve me and I understand.” The key to my success in treating patients is listening…I mean really listening…and the only way to do this is to be involved with the patient as a synergistic relationship where both parties are willing to follow the guidance the individual’s particular situation. And each situation is unique to the individual and unique to the particular experience. Just because someone responded a certain way last time does not mean they will this time. And just because it “feels” like it did last time doesn’t mean it is the same reason this time. To truly understand what must be done, the patient needs to know that they have all the answers to what their body needs. Sometimes they are hidden to the patient so the patient needs the practitioner’s guidance and ability to ask the right questions to help uncover the solutions for the individual. The questions a practitioner asks are important and I ask the

2592 Western Avenue, Guilderland, NY (518) 357-4210 same typical questions as everyone, but I have learned that it isn’t just the question that matters it is how you ask them, when you ask them and most importantly why you are asking them. I realize this may sound like the typical instructions one would get when studying to become a practitioner, but there is more depth to what I am speaking of. The questions themselves need an intention and the superficial response that often comes with this type of comment is that we are asking to “find out what is going on.” But if we are biased into treating conditions that we feel comfortable dealing with or know how to deal with, then sometimes our questions reflect this unconscious habit. I mean, for example, when treating back pain if we are comfortable working on muscle spasms then often the questions will lead a patient to confirm this conclusion. So I have learned to trust the patient over myself. I have learned to seek the patient’s answers over a diagnosis from another practitioner. I have learned to trust the body’s responses over the patients belief system. And finally I have learned to trust that when I am able to really listen then the right question comes to me which in turn helps me to guide the patient into a deeper understanding of what their body is telling them. So when the patient is able to listen to their bodies and I am able to interpret what their bodies are saying, together we can identify their individual solutions. Ultimately the patient has all the answers and my job is not to ask leading questions or base my decisions on X-rays, MRI’s, CT scans or other tests but to truly be willing to find the solutions even if it means that it isn’t me that can provide the services they need to resolve their condition. It is important to recognize that each episode is unique and the

“techniques” used in the past may not work as well in the present situation. This is why I spend so much time listening and involving myself with the patient, because the more the patient learns about themselves the more they can learn to listen to their body and trust its guidance which is vital to their long-term outcomes. Spiritual W O R K by Joanne McFadden ne of my professors in grad school, Amit Goswami (of ‘What the Bleep Do We Know?’ fame), said something that I have always remembered. He said that people “want to want the spiritual life.” They want to have it, but they might not necessarily be willing to do what it takes to immerse themselves completely in living a spiritual life.

O

I’ve often pondered that statement and have observed some patterns that people seem to follow in regards to the spiritual path. Some people are looking for an “easy” button. The word “spiritual” has the connotation of being lovely and wonderful, but in truth, spiritual work can be messy and long. Often times, it is not easy work. It requires years of practice, commitment and healing ourselves. It’s not going to happen after one workshop or even a couple years of study. It’s an ongoing, lifelong process of revealing the truth about ourselves.

16

Healing Springs I #70 October-November, 2013

People say they want healing, but they unconsciously avoid it. They try one thing after another, and as one of my students suggested to me, this is an avoidance technique that people use to actually keep themselves from doing the work. In his book After the Ecstasy, the Laundry, Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield writes, “While we might initially explore several traditions and practices, in the end we must choose one practice and follow it with our whole heart. What matters is the sincerity that we bring to the way we have chosen, a perseverance and willingness to stay with it and see what opens within us.” There can be a fear factor. Doing spiritual work means change, big time. Since what life will look like after the changes take place is unknown, people are fearful about doing the work. The fear holds them back and keeps them in the comfort of what they know, no matter how uncomfortable that may be. I think this is the reason I see people weave on and off the path. They do a little work, feel a sense of fear, and jump back off the path.

“People enter the work with attachment. They are looking to get something, rather than becoming more of who they truly are.”

Are you ready to create the peace, joy and abundance you deserve? Wait no longer

People enter the work with attachment. They are looking to get something, rather than becoming more of who they truly are. The truth is that anything we could ever need, we already have. It is a matter of allowing that happiness, abundance, creativity, etc., to express through us and as us. Sometimes, when people enter spiritual work and don’t get the results they think they wanted in the time they wanted them, they leave, thinking that “it doesn’t work.”

Special events with the Ahowan Peace Ministry, 10/9 and 10/11.

Spiritual work requires dedication and consistency. A person cannot expect to experience the undescribable, inner peace, joy, abundance, security, love, health and ease that characterizes a conscious, awakened life without investing in consistent spiritual work and practice. So, whatever your spiritual life looks like, I invite you to recommit to it and redefine it if necessary. Choose a path and hold steadfastly to it, immersing yourself ever deeper, so that you can experience the life that the Universe intended for you. Starting on January 1, 2014, a community of people who appreciate the power of focused thought will be conducting an historic experiment. Can we lower aggravated assaults in the City of Albany (compared to the previous 5 years) with our collective intention of peace? Co-researchers, State University of Albany professor, Dr. John Foldy and Numinous founder, Bethany Gonyea, MS are drawing inspiration for their research protocol from the Maharishi University and the team of scientists working with Lynn Mctaggert, author of the Intention Experiment. The study will kick off on New Year’s Day with a “Catch The Wave” concert at Unity Church of Albany at 1:00 PM. The event will be streamed on the internet as Unity Reverend, Jim Fuller leads the first meditation focusing intentions for peace in Albany streamed live on the internet. There will be live music by Mark Shepard and other speakers as well. For each day during the month of January different meditation leaders will lead similar live meditations and the study will close with a Friday evening concert at Unity Church on January 31. Research has shown the people who participate in such studies experience increased peace in their own lives, including better relationships, more optimism, lowered blood pressure, less physical pain among many other benefits. Healing Springs I #70 October-November, 2013

by Marietta Millet ave you ever wondered who you really are? Have you, like most of us, found many different answers? Do you still wonder what the purpose of your life really is?

H

Many of us face these questions, and answers are provided by many different entities and organizations that want to help. The School of the Golden Rosycross, also wants to help, and offers this help in a variety of ways. This help is especially useful for those who sense that the real meaning of our lives lies beyond this material world of opposites with which we are so familiar. Its purpose is to be of service to seekers, to show people the liberating possibilities that exist in life?the possibilities that each person actually has in his or her own hands to connect with the original divine nature. The tiny spark that offers this potential connection lies in the heart of each person and, once ignited, can be the basis for neutralizing the earthly nature so that there is space for being connected again with the divine nature. If this re-connection is indeed possible—and it is—then we require a means of understanding the difference between our familiar world and the divine nature to which we aspire. More importantly, we require a means of bridging the divide between the two. This information has always been available to humanity, often in texts with the true knowledge of the path of return veiled in symbolic language?the ancient Chinese wisdom of Lao Tzu, the teachings of the Buddha, the Hermetic writings, the Greek wisdom as expressed by Plato, the Bible and the early gnostic Christian texts, the Baghavad Gita, writings of Master Eckhart and Jacob Boehme, and classical Rosicrucian texts such as The Alchemical Wedding of Christian Rosycross, for example. The School of the Golden Rosycross begins its help by explaining texts from the universal wisdom in a way that provides practical advice to the seeker of today. More importantly, it goes beyond that assistance by fostering an ever-closer connection between the soul and the divine nature through Temple services, conferences, and gatherings where Light is experienced in unison with others. No teacher or master stands between the dedicated seeker and the Light. Each person follows the path in self-authority at his own pace. The Light itself is the teacher and the direct knowledge resulting from the Light is called Gnosis – knowledge of God.

“No teacher or master stands between the dedicated seeker and the Light. Each person follows the path in self-authority at his own pace.” Gnosis is a radiation, a spiritual Light. The goal is to connect the renewed human soul with the true spirit of God through Gnosis. The philosophy of the School of the Golden Rosycross is not only a philosophy, it shows a way of life which, if followed, leads to transfiguration, the reunification of body, soul and Spirit. It is not something to be taken on authority. It is something to learn for oneself, through experience. A true understanding of Gnosis comes only from experiencing it as an ever-present spiritual power that is active both within us and also within the cosmos — a power that may lead us toward our true destination. The School of the Golden Rosycross is the American branch of the international gnostic spiritual school Lectorium Rosicrucianum that offers assistance in following the original Christian initiation path of transfiguration. Currently it is active in 36 countries with 60 conference centers and about 130 city centers. Literature of the founders, Jan van Rijckenborgh and Catharose de Petri, is available through Amazon. There is a conference center of the Lectorium Rosicrucianum in Chatham, NY at 21 Bushnell Avenue. Public activities are held there on a regular basis. Meet, Greet & Tame your Gremlin by Annie Gregson emember a time you dreamed of a significant change, then talked yourself right out of it? Sure, sometimes there are good reasons not to run away with the circus (though a friend of mine did and had a priceless experience) but taking smart risks is essential for experience and growth. Hello fear. Hello ego. Hello inner judge. Meet your gremlins*.

R

Gremlins are those voices in your head that start up when they catch a whiff of change. They are that part of you that wants to keep you safe and expert at fueling any self-doubt you may have. Here’s some classic gremlin talk: • “You’re not good/smart/wealthy enough.â€? • “There are too many obstacles to overcome.â€? • “You don’t have enough time/money/support.â€? • “You have no idea how to even begin/it’s overwhelming.â€? • “What will people think?â€? This summer, my boyfriend asked me if I’d like to join a triathlon team. (I would ride my bicycle while the others swam and ran.) My gremlin Howie immediately weighed in with “You’ll ride too slow. You’ll disappoint. Blah blah blah.â€? Those voices can protect you (â€?Walk away from the scary person!â€?) but when you want to take a smart risk, the gremlins show up uninvited. (A smart risk aligns with your priorities and values, is well researched, driven by possibility, not fear of failure and is

backed up by belief and action.) So, how do you keep them from stopping you in your tracks? Start by simply noticing them. You can even give them names. (Howie, Bootsy and Sheila live in my brain.) By naming them, you’ve separated yourself from their fear mongering so you can take a deep breath and decide if any of what they say is actually true. The triathlon team was all about having fun and simply finishing. Good-bye gremlin chatter. Hello really cool accomplishment! Let’s bash those classic gremlin statements: • “Deep down I know I’m good enough and I’ll figure it out and find the resources I need.â€? • “I’ll use my experience to work around obstacles.â€? • “I will reexamine my priorities and find ways to shift time and money into the change I want.â€? • “I will start slowly, figuring out what to do step by step.â€? • “It’s none of my business what other people think of me.â€? Write your own set of affirmations and look at them often. The bottom line under all fear and doubt is that we are afraid we will not be able to handle what happens. But is that really true? What have you handled in the past? Gremlins are great at presenting worst-case scenarios. A while back, I was stressing out about making more money. Gremlins were drumming up fear, blabbing away. This will be an intimate workshop where we will use modern shamanic techniques to bring together a council of your mind, body, soul and spirit. Through the beat of the drum, we allow our concsious mind to rest, giving the silent parts of our being a chance to dialog and create a more aligned human being.

Wednesday Nights 6:30-8 6 weeks, starting November 6 Saratoga Springs, NY $125 for all 6 weeks Katrina Clay facilitator

(cert. Shapeshifter Practitioner & Shamanic Reiki Master)

call Katrina: 518.583.3277, 518.332.6581 or email katrina@healingspringsjournal.com call your own personal council to become more aligned inside and out me what would happen if suddenly all my money disappeared. “WHOA!” Shocking! Then I realized my friends would help me, I could sell things, downsize, etc. I’d figure it out. Gremlins can be bullies and liars and, having access to your entire history, know exactly which buttons to push. So sit down and figure out what is true and what isn’t. Don’t be afraid to ask the opinion of someone who supports you with loving honesty.

Here are more tools for muting those voices of self-doubt: Be here now. Do whatever it takes to put your mind into the present. Take a walk, listen to music, dance, call a friend.

1.

Dwell in possibility. Don’t wait for evidence – remind yourself of the benefits of what you are moving towards.

2. 3.

Offset the negative. Practice constructive self talk. Make a list of positive things about yourself, keep it handy and when those voices start to whisper or yell, drown them out with encouraging words of self-praise. Yell back! Give up complaining. Make a plan, a list, steps to take towards your change, then start. Celebrate along the way.

4.

Take care of yourself. Get enough sleep; eat well and balance work and play. (Gremlins hate all that.)

5. 6.

Get the support you need. Ask family, friends or a professional therapist or coach for support. Just knowing you’re not alone in feeling stuck or doubtful can help. See the change as an experiment. A shift in how you see the change will send them scurrying away.

7.

Separating yourself from those voices is a process that takes time. The latest neuroscience documents our ability to transform thought patterns of self-sabotage (gremlins) into self-support. Hug that scared inner child who needs reassurance. Gotta go. Howie’s telling me no one will ever read this article. I think he just needs a hug. *Taming Your Gremlins by Rick Carson Annie Gregson is a high-spirited life coach who serves the world with compassion and authenticity, injecting fun into the serious business of creating your life. Integrative Medicine and Energetic Medicine

by Sarah A LoBisco, ND ecently, I was intrigued by an email from a fantastic and gifted colleague in energetic and quantum medicine. The email contained four videos by John Veltheim, D.C., B.Ac., CBI, SrCBI, CBI, ATI, BAT, on the science of a new system of medicine, BodyTalk. I was impressed with Dr. Veltheim’s training background as a chiropractor, traditional acupuncturist, philosopher, and teacher. Furthermore, his expertise was validated by his post graduate training in applied kinesiology, bioenergetics, psychology, osteopathy, sports medicine, counseling, comparative philosophy, and theology. Therefore, I decided that the videos would be a worthwhile time investment and I clicked the first one. Well, not only did I listen with eagerness to all four videos, I found myself goggling for more!

R

I had just returned from training from the Institute of Functional Medicine’s (IFM) 2013 Annual Conference on the energy spectrum. After this extraordinary opportunity of spending time with some of the most prestigious and respected integrative doctors in my field, I was filled with even more conviction that our genes are not our destiny. Now, Dr. Veltheim was reinforcing what I learned, that what we choice to eat (nutrigenomics) and how we choose to live (epigenetics) all effects how our DNA is expressed toward health or disease. The fact is, we have an amazing navigator to our wellness goals in our body. It acts as both a detector and transducer to process, respond to, and decode various external cues through a complex process of multiple cellular signaling molecules. Depending on if the information is positive or negative for our unique biochemistry, we will experience health or sickness. In functional medicine, we learn that biochemical individuality; variations in genetic enzyme expression, lifestyle factors, and environmental factors, all have an effect on how well an intervention will affect a health outcome. However, our current model of medicine rests upon the Descartes and Newtonian model of medicine that views the body as separate and independent organ systems rather than an interdependent, network within a dynamic system. This results in prescribing medications without regard to how they will affect the body as a whole. (For example, the increased risk for diabetes in those who use statin medications). Dr. Veltheim even extends how our shortsighted viewpoint on the

body can affect our planet and our society’s emotional health. This could explain why the rate of depression and teen suicide is rising, despite the increase use of antidepressants (Muller, R. Prescription for Controversy: Antidepressants & Teen Suicide: Talking About Trauma. May 31, 2013). Therefore, it’s time that all medical practitioners begin to embrace and understand the body beyond a two dimensional, biochemical model. This is especially true if we are to earn better rankings in health results of our medical system worldwide. Dr. Veltheim and many of my functional medicine practitioner mentors have helped connect the dots between how anatomy and physiology can be combined biochemistry, systems theory, and quantum mechanical theory create this new medical model.

Unwind... let healing begin.

Lynn Allison, DC 268-9542 Craniosacral Therapy, Chiropractic Saratoga & Schenectady, NY

For example, in the functional medicine organ systems approach, doctors will consider that for a bone to truly heal, it needs proper circulation via the cardiovascular system to bring it nutrients. It also needs immune cells to clean up the inflammatory site via the immune system. Furthermore, the proper neuroendocrine signals that communicate pain sensations to the brain must be regulated. It is only when all these factors are addressed that we effectively mediate the healing response to the end organ system and overall wellness. Still, if one only views this physical aspect of the disease process, even if it is within a system-based model, it can be tempting to get lost in the network dynamics of organs (which I must admit, I love studying!). Various factors are all at play that accumulates to influence all these interdependent systems. Our western word for this is “stress.” It is now well-accepted that stress affects our body. We see increased risk of heart attack, blood sugar metabolism disorders, immune depression, gastrointestinal distress (including ulcers), hormonal imbalances, and mood disorders, among others. This is also why the functional and naturopathic philosophies honor the mind-body. How one thinks can perpetuate a disease process and create waxes and wanes of returning symptoms. Dr. Veltheim and mind-body practices favor that we address all the various stressors, environmental and emotional, to fully shift how our DNA is being encoded by our environment. Otherwise, the resulting disease patterns will keep repeating. In other words, these stressors serve as epigenetic factors (changes in genetic expression from environmental exposures) that express themselves as various symptoms. Inevitably, the final stress then hits as the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back and a chronic disease is diagnosed. Using drugs or even supplements that simply suppress these warning symptoms, in the long-term, will not bring balance to the body. It’s time for a new way, the way I’ve been writing about. We now have evidence how the mind and stress affects the body’s physiology and how various energy techniques modulate our biochemistry. We live in an exciting time as we shift from a two dimensional, one-size-fits-all-medical-model to a dynamic, individualized, and integrated one. I’m excited to be amongst the participants in this journey! #70 October-November, 2013 I Healing Springs

Relax by Ann Carey Tobin early everyone knows they are “supposed” to relax to optimize their health and well being. For many this well meant advice often seems more like a command to “hurry up and relax”, where the Search for Nirvana turns into Finding Nemo. Fortunately, it is possible to incorporate relaxation and rejuvenation into your day with ease by keeping it simple and discovering what truly resonates with you, and with the moment.

N

There are many effective, research-backed and well described tools for stress management, including mindfulness/meditation, exercise/movement, yoga, biofeedback, self hypnosis, guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation, art therapy, massage, and even a nourishing/anti-inflammatory diet (to name a few). Perhaps, though, you are already practicing a form of relaxation through dedication to a hobby in which you find yourself lost in the moment. Relax, you may be able to score some relaxation points for gardening, playing your instrument for pleasure, creating art, or cooking for fun. Breath work techniques for relaxation are universal, varied, easy to master, and, best of all, portable and cheap. Experiment and practice

with different methods when quiet time is available, and you will discover that your mind and body will quickly respond when your breath is engaged in times of need. A favorite technique of Andrew Weil’s, and one that I frequently recommend, is the 4-7-8 exercise. * Sit up, with your back straight (eventually you will be able to do this exercise in any position). Employ belly breathing. * Place your tongue against the ridge of the tissue just behind your upper front teeth and keep it there throughout the exercise. * Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound. * Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four. * Hold your breath for a count of seven. * Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight. * Repeat this cycle three more times, for a total of four breathes. * Try to do this breathing exercise at least twice a day. You can repeat the whole sequence as often as you wish, but do not do more than four breathes at one time for the first month of practice. (This exercise is fairly intense and has a profound effect on the nervous system—more is neither necessary nor better for you). Once you are practiced, you may increase to eight breathes, if desired. Consider this exercise a tonic—one that can increase your energy or calm you down, depending on your need. Also consider using breath work on a schedule, such as upon rising, retiring, or before meals to promote mindful eating. When practiced as a routine exercise through out the day it may increase your lung capacity and improve oxygenation.

An excellent reference that covers many mind-body techniques is Healing Mind, Healthy Woman, by Alice Domar, PhD. She teaches a type of breath focus she calls a “mini-relaxation” exercise, or “mini” for short. Although the experience may be augmented by a quiet spot and closed eyes, this “mini” can just as easily be done while stalled in traffic or during an anxiety-provoking encounter, and it can equip you to better deal with the challenge at hand. * Slowly take in a deep abdominal to chest breath to the count of four. * Pause * Slowly release the breath while counting backwards from four. * Repeat a few times. Need it simpler? Periodically throughout the day stop, drop your shoulders, visualize yourself drawing energy from the ground, and take a deep belly breath. Consider placing reminder cards around your home or work station, or get in the habit of doing this whenever you cross a threshold. The use of affirmations, as promoted by Christiane Northrup, M.D., involves developing affirming, positive, “as I want to be” statements that you repeat as fact. They attest to the healing power of words and serve to lift the spirit. You can also use your favorite prayers, psalms, scriptures, prose or verse. Combining affirmations with a regular meditation practice, or random excursions into mini-mindfulness, can be very effective. Journaling is a powerful way to connect with your inner wisdom, provides an avenue for exploration of your life issues, and may be helpful to “unload” prior to bedtime. An abbreviated version of journaling is an Appreciation journal. Jot down moments in your day that you find positive, beautiful, supportive, or life-affirming in some way. You may be inspired by a smile, your pet, an act of kindness, nature, or the

mundane. It is your journal and your moment, and with consistency it often helps grow an appreciation for the positive in our lives.Journal A restful night’s sleep is a critical component for stress management. Bedtime rituals aid in relaxation and promote sleep initiation. Consider customized healing rituals, such as herbal tea (perhaps Tulsi, chamomile, lemon balm, passionflower or oat straw), a warm bath (perhaps with Epsom salts and essential oils), a good book, meditation practice, gentle yoga, handwork projects (knitting, needlework, etc.), aromatherapy, and journaling. Another useful bedtime tool is the “To Do” list, to prevent middle of the night worries. Good sleep hygiene involves dimming household lights 30-60 minutes prior to bed, avoiding electronic stimulation an hour prior to bed, and retiring to a bedroom that is dark, quiet, with a comfortable temperature and mattress. The bed should not be used for watching television, reading or eating. You may meet with more success by putting effort into making your bedroom a sanctuary. A working support system is a keystone to successful stress management. It is important to evaluate the foundation of your support system and, if necessary, to take action to shore it up. A source of spiritual comfort and joy is inherent in the holistic and balanced approach to meaningful relaxation. Spirituality is what connects us to each other, and to something greater than ourselves. During your journey to optimal health, take time to tap into your inner wisdom to determine what truly invites joy into your life. Making joy and rejuvenation a priority in your life will nurture the healer within. Be well. Ann Carey Tobin, M.D., FAAFP, is a board certified family physician. The Green Ribbon of Prevention

by Patricia Bowden-Luccardi LMT, CNMT. CCT very October when Breast Cancer Awareness month comes around you do not have look far to find Pink Ribbons on every conceivable consumer product. Have they gone too far “pinking” Ford Motor Mustangs, gasoline, Coca-Cola, Kentucky Fried Chicken and yes, hand guns, all in the name of raising money for Breast Cancer Research? Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) was launched in 1987 by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), a British chemical company which has been a world leader in manufacturing cancer-causing pesticides, plastics and other products. From day one, ICI and later spin-off Zeneca have used BCAM to direct research and prevention efforts away from chemical carcinogens.

Passionate women who have or had cancer, lost a loved one or a friend to cancer are jumping,, running and walking for “The Cure,” raising millions that goes to research, while so little comes from it. Susan G. Komen alone raises $450 million with little to show beyond the status quo. While much is invested in pharmaceutical treatments less than 5% goes to research on environmental causes and 1-3% to prevention. Dr. Margaret Cuomo (sister of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo) wrote about her perspective on this in her book, A World Without Cancer, "More than 40 years after the war on cancer was declared, we have spent billions fighting the good fight. The National Cancer Institute has spent some $90 billion on research and treatment during that time. Some 260 nonprofit organizations in the United States have dedicated themselves to cancer — more than the number established for heart disease, AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, and stroke combined. Together, these 260 organizations have budgets that top $2.2 billion. We have not adequately channeled our scientific know-how, funding, and energy into a full

exploration of the one path certain to save lives: prevention. That it should become the ultimate goal of cancer research has been recognized since the war on cancer began.” John R. Lee MD, a pioneer on women’s health states, “The key to reducing the incidence of breast cancer is prevention and prevention is a dirty word in the breast cancer industry unless you are referring to tamoxifen, mammograms, neither of which are remotely like prevention.” “To slash, burn and poison” a term coined by Susan Love MD, continues to be the standard of care and little has been done to reduce the incidence of the disease. The answer lies primarily with the politics of medicine, the cancer industry and the industries that create the pollutants that contribute to breast cancer. Chemicals in household, cosmetic and industrial products that disrupt the human hormone system are linked to high global rates of breast, ovarian, prostate, testicular and thyroid cancers, warns a report released February 2013 by the UN Environment Program and the World Health Organization. One example is the hormone-mimicking chemicals such as parabens and phthalates found in cosmetic and body care products increase the risk of breast cancer and cause a broad range of birth defects. A study published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology in 2012 detected paraben esters in 99 percent of breast cancer tissues sampled. Revlon and Estee Lauder both tout the Pink Ribbon!

Doctors will still tell you there is no cure. Christine Horner MD, in her book Waking the Warrior Goddess- Program to Protect Against & Fight Breast Cancer, challenged this statement. She found over a 1000-researched studies that used food, nutrients and lifestyle in defeating breast cancer. The science of nurtigenomics or how food talks to your genes is the nutritional approach that underlies prevention. Dean Ornish MD, showed that after three months on an intensive lifestyle program including whole-foods plant -based diet, over 500 genes that regulate cancer were beneficially affected, either turning off the cancer causing genes or turning on the cancer-protective genes. Q

All of you writing in this column have different things that you offer to help us get and stay healthy when we become 'sick'. There are so many theories out there regarding nutrition and diet. In your experience are there any that appear to be valid, and what advice can you give about the importance of diet in health and healing?

resistance in cells and now they recognize this is true in the brain as well and are starting to refer to Alzheimer's as Type III diabetes. Chronic insulin resistance keeps the blood glucose higher which irritates the lining of the blood vessels and intestines. Our immune system tries to increase mucus to coat the lining decreasing the irritation but a thinning occurs in the mucus lining of the intestines, arteries and blood brain barrier. The mucus works like a glue and filters what passes into our bloodstream. This explains “Leaky Gut” syndrome and food intolerances. Our immune response to particles of fully undigested foods is to attack and tag it as an enemy. An overworked immune system weakens over time.

Research is really confirming we are what we eat and beyond that, we are what we think, especially in with the immune function.

It looks like our genes have a moral compass when it comes to immune function. In a study reported in New York Times Sunday magazine 8/25/13, researchers monitored genetic markers in white cells drawn from volunteers after completing an online questionnaire about happiness. They knew that mood influences health but did not realize that the more "self-serving" the happiness was the higher the levels of biological markers for inflammation. Volunteers with "service to others" happiness had lower pro-inflammatory markers.

The current interest in about chronic inflammation. Not just the swollen joints of arthritis but more subtle occurrence of inflammation behind diabetes, heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome, dementia, etc. It seems that our over-processed diet increases our body's inflammatory response immediately. We know that over time higher glucose levels from poor quality diet creates insulin

It is all fixable- stop overloading our immune system with inflammatory foods, smoking, self centered busy lifestyles that we stress over. Even more amazing is that creating community, sharing and helping others is one of the best immune boosters. This doesn't mean no one will ever have disease but we can stop waiting for the diagnosis, stop worrying with every test and improve our

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell Over the years I have experimented with a number of dietary methods, many long before my involvement in homeopathy. Each one has elements that are useful, but the bottom line is that we are made of different ‘stuff’. Our heritage, genetic makeup, regional and familial eating habits, along with climate and the foods that are available for eating. All of this has been ‘turned on its head’ by a global economy, where exotic foods are readily available, taste good, and are touted as being good for us. Truth is that not all foods are in sync with our particular inner chemistry. An example is from an article I read a few months ago, that stated westerners are not equipped with the necessary digestive enzymes to consume and assimilate sea weed, as Asian cultures are. They have evolved over time to be able to eat it. Another example is the Inuit peoples, who can subsist on meat and blubber from animals, with no green vegetables or fruit. Westerners would not survive. My colleagues are better equipped to address the very complex issues of body chemistry and nutritional needs, but my experience over time has led me to have a few basic rules that I follow. If the food causes distress, don't eat it. Suppressing the symptom with Pepsid, Tums, or any other medication ignores what your body is telling you. Then there are the more subtle and cumulative effects of certain foods that can cause inflammation

of certain areas of the body, which require more extensive analysis, and may require elimination diets and reintroduction to ascertain whether a food is acceptable for your body or not. Wheat and gluten sensitivity has been a controversial topic for over 40 years, but has been proven, lately, to be a larger problem than was being recognized. Overindulgence of any one food group, without rotation is the likely cause of many food sensitivities. Bottom line for me is to rotate food groups, eat as many vegetables as are available, pay as close attention as possible to my body’s many expressions and do the best that I can to give it what seems to benefit my overall energy requirements. I do experiment with the latest appearance of beneficial foods, but then after a time, I stop and observe whether I feel differently than when I was taking the supplement. I may continue to take it, or not, depending on how I feel. All of this is very unscientific, but it works fairly well. Lastly, I DO avail myself of lab testing. A recent examination of my blood revealed some foods that confirmed my observations as well as opened me to ones that I had not noted. As a result of nearly strict compliance, I have seen some inflammation leave. My colleague Lynn Allison is the contact for more information on that test, but I can attest that the results have proven to have helped a number of my clients. One truth can also be used to monitor your dietary choices. Whatever you resist, persists. My rule for any advice that I offer to my clients, is that be gentle with their bodies. Our body is our home. Respect it. Jerome M Pindell uses homeopathy, hypnosis, jin shin jyutsu, and intuitive based counseling in a comprehensive practice in Clifton Park, Niskayuna, and New York City. “There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.” ~ Martha Graham
