The Healing Springs Community Salon

January 16, 6-8:30 $10 in advance $15 at the door

The National Museum of Dance

99 South Broadway, Saratoga Springs The Healing Springs Journal is an independently-owned publication that has created community by uniting the public with wellness practitioners, businesses and stores for almost 12 years.

Please join as we gather together beyond the printed page. The event will be a salon held on the first Full Moon of 2014 There is evidence that for most of recorded history, communities would gather to commune and discuss the goings on of the day. One form of gathering were Salons. In Ancient Greece were called symposia and served as conversations and feasts. The Roman banquets were an offshoot to provide an egalitarian forum of the sharing of ideas. The tradition continued much later during the French Revolution salons.

“Community is a safe place precisely because no one is attempting to heal or convert you, to fix you, to change you. Instead, the members accept you as you are. You are free to be you. And being so free, you are free to discard defenses, masks, disguises; free to seek your own psychological and spiritual health; free to become your whole and holy self. —M. Scott Peck. The Different Drum.

“It is probable that the next Buddha will not take the form of an individual. The next Buddha may take the form of a community, a community practicing understanding and loving kindness, a community practicing mindful living. This may be the most important thing we can do for the survival of the earth.” —Thich Nhat Han

Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you A couple weeks ago, my dog Z and I went to an Improvisational Sound Circle. Z has outweighed me since she was 9 months old. Even so, she is not a particularly brave dog and the sounds coming from the circle intimidated her. I wouldn’t allow her fear to take me away all together, but I did step to the side and sat down beside her. This seemed to placate her and she relaxed enough to lie down, and so did I. With my whole back side in union with the earth and Z in contact with my right side, the drums, chanting and variety of sounds permeated my being in a way that sitting up had not allowed for. I was expecting to participate, but instead had a perfect healing experience. The sound circle was on the first day of a week-long retreat for Z and I. We stayed at Earthlands in a cottage down a narrow wooded path, leaving behind my car, electricity and running water. (Full disclosure; there was an office about a half mile away that we walked to for powering up my phone). Besides the intention of seeking new vision and taking time to write, I had no plans or obligations. Our days were a simple flow; we ate when hungry, slept when the candle went out, walked to explore, and sat among the ferns to listen and write. I never directed Z’s behavior either, and we were continually in sync. At the end of the week, I had not realized new vision, and instead felt emptied out. Not devoid of meaning, rather it was a state of pure experience. There were no hopes of being somewhere else, no need to do something different or be better. It was enough to watch a leaf fall from its tree. I was enough enjoying a fern dance in the sun. It felt as though I was engaged with primal life. Meanwhile, my personality was having a profound emotional cleansing of the false structures and judgments that often come with today’s abstract culture. It is my belief we should all get emptied out every year, month, week, day. How we each go about this is an individual process. For me it was done by going in to the woods, for you it might be while learning an altogether new activity. I was expecting vision, but instead had a perfect healing experience. As we drove out of Earthlands, it became clear how relaxed I had been. In contrast while driving my body was tense about taking the right exit, staying in the correct lane, not going too fast, not going too slow. In addition, the noise and the lights were insulting compared to the quiet and beautiful spaciousness I had felt in the woods. It had taken us about five minutes to find the rhythm of nature. Meanwhile, back in the world of schedules, rules and right/wrong, I struggled to find my cadence. This is symbolic of a greater question I’ve been working on for years; how to keep my ancient nature awake while participating in the modern world. Just like the sound circle and my retreat, the answer may not be what I expect, but the perfect healing experience.

OnTrack Health & Wellness Announces the implementation of New Technology. OnTrack Health & Wellness, uses the ZYTO bio-communication program that enables extensive health related information about each client to be gathered through a direct link between the client and the computer. This information is then used by a Wellness Counselor as part of a holistic approach to improving ones health and wellness. The scan is complementary for new clients, and takes about five minutes to conduct. Using ZYTO technology, OnTrack Health & Wellness can identify a biological preference for nutrition, therapies and treatments as part of a process of creating a personalized and unique wellness program for each individual client.

“One size does not fit all when it comes to health and wellness. Using ZYTO we are able to approach wellness on an individual basis, creating a custom plan for each unique client" said Gina Disney, Wellness Counselor. "The results have been impressive because this approach takes into account the body's own biological preference as part of our development of a holistic health plan. OnTrack Health & Wellness offers clinic services to people seeking wellness in the Malta, Saratoga and Clifton Park areas Partners Nicole Fellini and Franesa Pyle founded Saratoga and is now registering appointments for clients interested in Botanicals over a shared passion to bring to the community a new being scanned with this technology. Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, the founder of Body-Mind Centering® coming to Saratoga Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, the founder of Body-Mind Centering® (BMC), will be presenting a six-hour workshop at Skidmore College, June 25 & 26, 2014. As a pre-conference presenter, she will precede the 29th Annual BMCA U.S. Conference in an experiential workshop entitled “New Frontiers in Body-Mind Centering.” Cohen was a dancer turned occupational therapist turned experiential body mind researcher. She is known for her somatic exploration of the body-brain using movement, touch, sound, and imagery. Her understanding of the body systems, development, embryology, and cellular consciousness is based on science, anatomy and physiology. Those who practice Body-Mind Centering embody developmental patterns and tissues under the skin. BMC allows knowledge and understanding to come from sensation and the shifting personality of fluids, organs, nerves, and more. BMC recognizes the body as the teacher and permits the transformation of patterns and habits through somatic experience. BMC Practitioners have dozens of hands-on palpations that stimulate deep aspects of the body and brain. They also initiate movement from areas of the body not typically part of conscious awareness, such as the endocrine glands or low brain reflexes. BMC training programs take place around the globe and BMC teachers, practitioners, and educators use the work in creative projects, healing professions, psychology, infant development, embodied yoga, disability intervention, education, the arts, and more. “The process of embodiment entails initiating breath, movement, voice, awareness and touch from any cell and/or collection of cells (as tissues and systems) and to witness what arises: the qualities of breath, movement, voice, and touch, the mindfulness such as the feelings, sensations, emotions, memories, dreams, thoughts, image and insights and the physiological effects. Once gaining consciousness of an area of tissue in ourselves we can share this process with other from the same place in ourselves, such as bone to bone or organ to organ and discuss our experiences with each other.” Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, “Sensing Feeling & Action: The Experiential Anatomy of Body Mind Centering®”, Third Edition, 2012, Contact Editions. What is Improv and how can it benefit you?

by Terrie Gifford he complete word is improvisation; meaning to perform “in the moment:” In other words, making something up on the spot without planning. This can be in the form of acting, playing a musical instrument or any form of creative expression.

T

Learning to improvise can help you in many ways. Studies show when we think in different ways, we actually increase brain cell function. Practicing improv promotes brain cell activity because improv exercises help you think on your feet. Once you feel comfortable thinking on your feet, your confidence level and

self-esteem improves. This new-found ability translates to greater social ease and a more outgoing personality. Becoming a better communicator is another benefit of improv. Because you are encouraged to listen carefully to your scene partner’s suggestions, you can improve your listening skills. Also, speaking in a clear and effective manner is important in responding during improv scenes. Speaking and listening skills are listed in the New York State English Language Arts Core Curriculum, therefore educators believe developing these communication skills are necessary for success in life. Did you know the most requested trait by employers is the ability to work on a team? Improv aids us in becoming better team players by teaching 1) taking turns, 2) going along with another person’s idea, and 3) not dominating a scene. If you have never been on a sports team, you may not have had the chance to practice these lessons in collaboration and cooperation. Lastly, improv can be cathartic and therapeutic because in improv scenes we are assigned a character to play. Through these characters we can explore accents, attitudes, emotions and different ages. This allows us to step out of our comfort zones into an area of personal growth. One of my improv workshop participants said recently, “Improv is the most fun I’ve had as an adult.”

One final note: Because improv is “off the cuff,” responses are often comedic, which stimulate laughter. A hardy belly-laugh increases our oxygen levels, relieves tension and improves our mood; all of which boost our immune system and ward off illness. You can take an improv workshop or plan for a night of improv with friends to try out your talent and improve your brainstorming, communication and team work abilities. Let’s face it, the laughter alone is worth it. If you can’t arrange for a workshop, you can purchase the DVD “You Can Do Improv,” which is an educational video thoroughly explaining the principles of improv, complete with a handbook of 12 improv games to practice in the privacy of your own home. Weaving Together the Inner & the Outer by Joanne E. McFadden hose who have set themselves firmly and consistently on the spiritual path at some point come to grapple with the seeming opposites of the inner and outer worlds. There’s the human, we say, and there’s the Divine, and exactly how do we fit them together?

A starting point is realizing that this duality is, in reality, an illusion, because everything (and I mean everything, from those peak experiences to the guy who cuts you off on the Northway) is God, Spirit, or whatever word you use for the Divine. Everything is One, a One that, as Science of Mind founder Ernest Holmes taught, “encompasses seeming opposites.” When you’re actively practicing your spirituality in daily life, you realize that you can no longer compartmentalize your life. There’s not a work life, a family life, a recreational life and a spiritual life. It’s all spiritual, it’s all one, and the greatest challenge for those who choose to meet it is to see the divine in all they experience. In a prayer, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin commanded, “Lay hold on me fully both by the within and the without of myself. Grant that I may never break this double thread.” It would be easy to live our “spiritual” lives ensconced away in community where meditation, prayer, sacred service and spiritual study were the only focus and everyday routine. Or, if we could go from conference to conference or retreat to retreat, being inspired by spiritual teachers and challenged to deepen ourselves in new ways, surely it would be easy to maintain our focus on the absolute spirituality of this

Healing Springs I # 71 December ‘13—January ‘14

“...this wonderful challenge is, how do achieve that realistic balance between the spiritual and the seemingly ‘human’ aspects of ourselves and our lives? It’s essential that we choose not one or the other, but both at the same time.” world in which we live. Both those options, however, are unrealistic. We have jobs, families, and other activities that require our attention. So again, this wonderful challenge is, how do achieve that realistic balance between the spiritual and the seemingly “human” aspects of ourselves and our lives? It’s essential that we choose not one or the other, but both at the same time. Through consistent spiritual reading and study, centering, prayer, meditation, mindfulness and other spiritual practices, we can be gently led to this integration of inner and outer that turns our whole lives into a beautiful spiritual practice. This is not a solo endeavor, however. Mindful Motion by Lisa Millis iving well in a world that doesn’t always support healthy lifestyle choices is a challenge. Multiple conditions in our environment can develop sedentary, unhealthy habits such as sitting at a computer, or on the phone all day, disconnecting from nature, driving everywhere, eating processed foods, limiting meaningful connections with the people we love, and collapsing in mental exhaustion at the end of each day. Sound familiar?

L

Imagine driving on the Northway when you notice your temperature gauge warning light blink on. You’re overheating. What do

you do? Some people I pose this question to say, “Stop the car and check it out.” But most admit they would just keep driving. Unfortunately, that same approach often applies when it comes to the warning lights on our own control panel of mental and physical health. Our bodies send us low-level warning signals when we’re stressed: insomnia, headaches, increased use of unhealthy coping mechanisms like tobacco, alcohol, or drugs, weight gain, low libido, chronic pain in the shoulders, back, and neck, and even the occasional unkind (and unnecessary) verbal outburst. Untreated, these signals can advance to mid-level warnings like high blood pressure, gastrointestinal disorders, addiction, and increased risk of injury. Ignore all your warning lights for too long and it can lead to diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, physical injury (i.e., fractures and sprains), troubled personal and work relationships, or depression. But even if we heed these warnings, it’s hard to know how to begin a journey of recovery that leads to total wellness.

Begin By Letting Go As you start each day, make a promise to yourself to only carry that day’s burdens. Too often, we tote more than our fair share— including burdens that are not even our own. We dwell on yesterday’s challenges until we’ve lost the energy to focus on

today’s. To practice mindfulness is to learn to let go of what is not in your control. Forgive yourself for the role you played in creating past burdens so you can start living in the present.

an analytical distance? It’s not necessary to judge anything as good or bad, simply notice your thoughts and sensations for what they are. Then let them go.

Connect With Nature

Completing your walk, congratulate yourself for your initial intention to practice mindful walking, no matter how many times your mind wandered, or how “well” you thought your practice went. Remember, your intention to be mindful is the key to good practice.

Nature is a wonderful teacher, whether you live in the city or the country. In the Northeast, we benefit from the shifting energy of the changing seasons, nature’s way of signaling change and renewal. Be mindful of these changes in the Earth, in your daily environment, and how they affect your mind and body. Sense the rhythms of each season. Use it to enliven your senses and bring your physical self into accord with the world around you. Harmony begins when you become aware of, and take action to repair, what is out of tune.

Walk Set your intention to walk mindfully. What does this mean? Begin with a few deep breaths and the plan to spend your walk aware of your physical surroundings, your thoughts, feelings, and sensations. Be sure your posture is tall, your arms bent at 90 degrees, thumbs facing up. Each step, lightly touch the ground with your entire mid-foot. Notice your feet hitting the ground. Feel the sensation. If you sense you are striking with force on your heel or toes, correct it. Lean from your ankles and work to increase the number of times your feet touch the ground. This will assure an injury free, efficient walk. Look around. What do you see and hear? How does the air feel against your skin? What do you smell: fresh-cut grass, raked leaves, wildflowers, ice? What thoughts engage your mind? What emotions? Are they intense, mild? Does your internal experience pull you deeper inward, or can you observe your thoughts—and your self—from #

Try to move daily for a brisk walk of at least ten minutes. Set a goal to walk, with good form and moderate intensity, up to three times a day, five days a week for a total of 150 minutes (2.5 hours). Walking is a terrific, no-frills way to get your mind and body in motion—today. Poet John Donne once wrote, “never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.” The bell Donne refers to is the funeral bell, the bell that reminds us of our too-brief journey on Earth. But Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, author and Professor Emeritus of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at UMass Medical School, suggests there is another bell: the bell of mindfulness. It tolls for each moment, awakening us to our senses, inviting us to experience our lives now, while we have this life to live. ‘Tis the Season to Give Health to Our Children by Sarah A LoBisco, ND ur children need our help. According to the American Heart Association (AHA) and USA today about 4% to 6% of American youth are obese. Although the AHA reports that the number of overweight and obese children is leveling off, the percentage of severe obesity within the same age range is increasing. These statistics put our youth at higher risk for adult type disease including high blood pressure, liver disease, type 2 diabetes, and musculoskeletal problems.

O

I have discussed in previous articles how our children are overfed yet malnourished. This is due to the American processed, junk food diet. A diet of sugary treats makes our children crave more unhealthy food and fill up on empty calories, leading to the dreary health state they are in.

The Emotional Effects on Our Children’s Health

body functions, especially for little ones. One recent UCLA study published online by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and reported on psychcentral.com demonstrated that there was a connection between psychological issues in childhood and physical diseases as they grew up. Furthermore, societal impacts of abuse, along with the lack of proper nourishment in the overall population, are contributing to a sad generation. For example, Scientific American reported that even babies experience depression in our modern world! This puts them at risk for higher levels of suicide and addictions. Where does this leave us? The good news is that we can help our children. The first step is by being a positive role model. This can be accomplished through our own lifestyle choices that encourage our youngsters, tweens, and teens’ to thrive through the following means: Choosing wholesome, organic food that is full of healthy nutrients as often as possible.

When most people consider health, it is the bodies’ physical Teaching our children to manage stress effectively. This can well-being that predominate their thoughts. Using proper, quality, individualized supplemental support for their growing bodies. Scheduling fun sport activities or participating in family exercises.

Modeling our own need for restoration and rest and getting proper sleep.

Decreasing our environmental exposure in our home by purchasing organic personal care products and cleaners.

Family Dining Another helpful hint for happier and healthier youth is having regular family dinners. Not only do children and teens who have regular family dinners report better self-esteem, but they are also less likely to partake in addictive behaviors and substances. When we think of the holiday season, most of us think of what we can give our children. Let’s give them the gift of a healthier and happier life. As author Gary Snyder notes, “To speak of wilderness is to speak of wholeness.” To have a wild mind is to have a whole mind. People with wild minds are those who have cultivated and embodied their innate human wholeness — the full rainbow spectrum of capacities, talents, and sensibilities that constellate our evolutionary birthright. My new book, Wild Mind, is a field guide to the cultivation of this astonishing medley of wholeness. It introduces what I call the Nature-Based Map of the Human Psyche, which identifies and describes the four facets of indigenous human wholeness. Collectively, these four facets of wholeness make up what I call the human Self (with a capital “S”). The Self contains all the innate human resources we need to mature psychologically and spiritually, to become fully human, to serve life well — actually, to do anything well. And the thing we most need to do well now in the early twenty-first century is to transform our Western and Westernized cultures from being life destroying, as they are now, to being not only life sustaining but actually life enhancing. Sadly and tragically, mainstream Western culture does little to support the cultivation of any of the four facets of the Self — and actively suppresses two of them — but healthy traditions around the world, including those found in Western culture, provide an abundance of practices for cultivating the fourfold Self. Wild Mind presents an eclectic collection of contemporary, Western, nature-based practices for the cultivation of the Self. At this time in our journey as a species, we’re being summoned by the world itself to make many urgent changes to the human project, but most central is a fundamental re-visioning and reshaping of ourselves, a shift in consciousness. Wild Mind guides us to reclaim our original wholeness, our indigenous human nature granted to us by nature itself. The key is not to merely suppress psychological symptoms, recover from addictions and trauma, or manage stress but rather to fully flesh out our multifaceted wild minds, committing ourselves to the largest story we’re capable of living, serving the greater Earth community.

The

GARDEN in Saratoga Springs by Wendy Wood Ordway he Garden is a very wonderful space on the border of Saratoga Springs and Greenfield. It is 1.5 miles driving west from Saratoga Hospital on Church Street. The address is 434 Church Street which is also 9N. The Garden is a healing space and also a place to spend the night. There is a motel and the house where the therapy services are located. Before she found the Garden she looked at 14 different properties in her quest for the right space to make her dream come true. Once Suzanne came to the property she fell in love with it. The property needed a lot of work. The pond was a major project. It is a very special element of the outside Garden space. The Garden opened its doors 3 weeks after it was purchased. by Michael Lenz was introduced to the world of juicing several months ago when my wife began her journey to get healthy through proper diet and nutrition. After giving birth to 4 children over the course of 12 years, she had tried several “diets” to try to lose weight. Each time, she would lose some weight, and then put it back on.

I

It wasn’t until she changed her perspective from trying to be on a “diet” to deciding to eat healthy food, that her entire focus changed. Once she made the change to a healthy food lifestyle, the whole family got on board and we’ve been on a clean eating quest ever since. I’ll admit that when she first brought home a juicing machine I was a bit skeptical. The idea of drinking juiced vegetables didn’t sound all that appealing to me, but I was very supportive of her and her new healthy eating lifestyle. One evening after work, she handed me a glass and asked me to try some. I took a sip and to my utter amazement, it was one of the most refreshing drinks I had ever tasted! The fact that I was not a vegetable lover made my conversion that much more dramatic. I couldn’t believe that vegetables could taste that good (with the help of some apples, lemon, and ginger). To add to my excitement was how much energy I had even after the first glass. Ever since, I’ve been juicing as often as possible, and I recommend it to everyone I talk with about nutrition and wellness. So the big question is “why juice?” I went to the website of Joe Cross, the inspiration behind the terrific documentary Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead, to find the best synopsis of the benefits of juicing: “Juicing offers many life-enhancing health benefits including a faster, more efficient way to absorb immune boosting nutrients naturally found in fruits and vegetables. It provides a way to access digestive enzymes typically locked away in the fiber matrix of whole fruits and vegetables. Most commercial juices are processed and lacking in nutrition while freshly juiced fruits and vegetables are loaded with an abundance of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients.

Drinking fresh juice can help us adopt healthier eating patterns. For those of us who do not traditionally consume many fruits and vegetables, incorporating fresh juice can be a fun and different approach to increasing consumption of these important plant foods for

improved health and wellness and reaching your weight loss goals. How does it work? Juicing removes the insoluble fiber from vegetables and fruits. While fiber is an established, important part of an overall healthy diet, removing the insoluble fiber allows for increased absorption of specific health promoting phytonutrients including enzymes, while the soluble fiber persists into the juice. By removing the fibers and consuming fruits and vegetables in liquid form, we are providing a nutrient delivery system to our bodies that allows individuals who would otherwise have difficulty consuming whole vegetables, the opportunity to reap the numerous benefits vegetables have to offer.”

anguage originates from thoughts and feelings. And language holds clues that can help you identify underlying possibly subconscious - beliefs and attitudes. Getting really clear about your beliefs and attitudes is the first step in creating a life that is excellent, that is lived on your own terms. By paying attention to the words you use, you will notice what may be blocking you from moving forward. For example, imagine telling a friend about a dream you have to open up a consignment shop. You’ve been wanting to do this for years but haven’t taken any action. In telling your friend about it, you say “I should call the bank and talk with them about a small business loan.” Should? Ooh. Red flag. Think about it - should implies someone else is running the show, that you have no choice. Or you have some doubt around whether you really want to. By changing one word in that sentence, you will feel more like you are in control: “I could (or) I will call the bank and talk with them about a small business loan.” Change the language and see if that feels right. Should can be an indicator that you’re not on the right track. Or it can push away the responsibility for the action. Let’s look at more dis-empowering words and what you can replace them with: REPLACE ... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .WITH ... Need to . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Choose, want Have to . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Choose to, want to Can’t . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Not willing to Always, never . . . . . . . . . .Sometimes, often, seldom, in the past

I used to say “I’m always late.” Then I whammied myself with a 3prong approach to change this habit. First I shocked myself with the realization that, when I was late, I was unintentionally disrespecting the people waiting for me. Ouch. I was out of integrity. I was often late because I would start something or not stop doing something Healing Springs I # 71 December ‘13—January ‘14

when it was actually time to leave. So I began noticing this, keeping a careful eye on the clock and setting the time to leave 10 minutes earlier. Finally, I changed my language AND corrected (nicely) anyone else who dared to say "She's always late." I no longer say I'm always late and I politely point out to naysayers that that is no longer the case most of the time. This way I'm reinforcing the concept and creating a new habit of on-timeness. We hear (and believe) every word that comes out of our mouths. This is what the world of affirmations is all about it - hearing it is eventually believing it. Then doing it. Thoughts create words create action. REPLACE ... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .WITH ... But . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .And Must . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Choose, desire, want Try . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Intend, aim, (or drop it altogether) I taught kindergarten through 12th grade art for 23 years and I heard a lot of “I’ll try”. When I heard this, Yoda’s voice would softly whisper “Do or do not. There is no try.” (Sometimes I would say this out loud.) Or point out that saying “I’ll try” means you've already imagined being unsuccessful. So drop try from your vocabulary - your mind will hear you and believe you. Wouldn't you rather conjure up success? More words to drop from your vocabulary: Maybe. (This introduces uncertainty.) I would like to ... (Simply make the statement or acknowledgement - a preface diminishes the statement.) Kind of, sort of, you know. (Unnecessary.) And then there’s the power of “I”. Yes, you, taking responsibility for your world, your situation, your choices. If you really want to put yourself in the driver’s seat of your life, express yourself responsibly and authentically by starting your sentences with I. REPLACE ... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .WITH .. Susan Jeffers, from her book ‘Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway’, puts it another way: moving from Pain to Power. PAIN (Victim) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . POWER “I should” implies you have no choices . .“I could” puts things in the realm of choice. “It’s not my fault ...” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .“I am responsible for ...” “It’s a problem.” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .“It’s an opportunity.” (You may not see it that way right away.) “I’m never satisfied.” . . . . . . . . . . . . .“I want to learn and grow.” “Life’s a struggle.” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .“Life’s an adventure.” “I hope ...” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .“I know ...” “If only ...” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . “Next time ...” “What will I do?” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .“I can handle it.”

I’ll-crush-you-with-my-words way but from a peaceful, centered and sure core of trusting yourself. And that’s another key to living a most excellent life.

Ask the ractitioner

Q

There has been a lot of discussion in the media lately about “traumatic brain injury”. Is there any alternative or complementary support that you could offer to this widespread problem?

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell This question is one that has concerned me for years, and I am actually happy that it has finally come into the spotlight of public concern. Our population seeks to extend the limits of our sports for ourselves, but also for the professionals that are paid to entertain us. We ask and are given more aggressive play, but the risk to anyone that engages in “pushing the envelope” is becoming evident. The push to go beyond the limits of the last great action is an aspect of human nature, and an admirable quality that gives us the joy and excitement of living, but there are always limits to any endeavor. When an action leads to head injury (or any other serious bodily injury) then we need to step back and ask whether the risks are worth the adrenaline rush. It may seem like it at the time, but if we are unprepared for the multitude of repercussions, then we open ourselves to injuries beyond our expectation.

from one area of expertise to another area of the brain and retrain it for the needed tasks, as long as it is done quickly enough after a trauma. That involves quick and decisive responses after the trauma. Can alternatives deliver that needed healing stimuli to the brain? My experience says yes, it can and should be a part of an overall plan of addressing injury. Trauma has a cause and a number of manifestations. It is often not hard to recognize the cause, but the manifestation can often come slowly and insidiously, as we are seeing with football players. The 1st case of head injury came to me over 20 years ago. The initial reason for the visit was mild depression and chronic constipation. After extensive questioning I began to feel that a couple of soft-ball hits to the back of the head was a possible cause of the problems. I later learned that constipation was an effect of blows to the back of the head, as it can affect the action of smooth muscle, the large intestine, and thus cause constipation. Depression and other related issues that she faced, also fit the homeopathic remedy that I chose and can be related to brain injury. The homeopathic remedy that I chose, relieved, years after the injury, many of the effects of those head injuries. Homeopathy takes into account the cause as well as the observable effects. It can be used when all that you have is the cause and suspect the possibility of effects. Any head trauma carries the possibility of bruising. Bruising is bleeding and the homeopathic remedy, Arnica is a powerful assist to the body to relieve swelling as well as to stem the bleeding. This reduces the trauma. The sooner that the trauma is relieved the better the possibilities of healing. No other remedy is more important for every parent, coach, and athlete to have and use.

The brain is very plastic, meaning that it can adapt and change to Other remedies are important to know about for treating head meet a large variety of needs, and even shift responsibilities injury and can be useful if administered properly. remedy of choice in the case that outlined above, but homeopathy should be a part of all brain trauma intervention.

Chiropractor; Lynn Allison When I was young and hit my head, I would act embarrassed and pass it off as no big deal. The only concern was if you lost consciousness or vomited. New research is showing that any head trauma can affect us. So that knock on your head from on the bottom of the cabinet, a slip and fall, wrestling all have the potential to results in a mild concussion. A mild concussion can cause headaches, confusion, disorientation, irritability, altered learning skills, even a personality change which can last for a week and up to a year. Thanks to research on athletes we are more aware of the long term results and starting to change how we treat concussions. Immediate treatment of mild concussion is rest (non stimulating so no computer, video games, TV), lots of fluids, arnica, antioxidants especially Vitamin C, increased protein and omega-3 fatty acids to help repair. You do not have to stay awake after a concussion but there is an increased danger of bleeding in the brain or clot so watch for the danger ; increased headache, eye pupil size change or different in one eye verses the other, slurred speech. These warrant emergency care. Makes one wonder about kids and contact sports. There are new protective helmets coming out to reduce the shock level in some sports and this is great, but remembering that all bones do not fully ossify until in the teens may make us rethink flag football. Some retired footballers are demonstrating Post Concussive Syndrome and the possible correlation with Parkinson’s disease is being researched. Alternative care to support the healing would be craniosacral therapy to encourage the washing of the brain with nutrient loaded cerebrospinal fluid, myofascial release therapy, zero balancing and one team in PA found the Bowen technique was effective. There are MDs who specialize in concussion and can evaluate the progress but always better to allow time to heal from any head trauma. # 71

Since the time of that early case, I have also learned how to effectively use other modalities, which are Jin Shin Jyutsu and hypnosis. My colleagues, who write for this column, also have tools for assisting people with head trauma. We need to expand our use of and acceptance of alternatives in the treatment of brain injury. What do we loose by opening to the possible? I have used homeopathy with remarkable success in many forms of head injury, and only wish that I could have used it more often than the opportunities that I have given.

Ideas from

Stoicism I Wish I’d Learned

in School by Jules Evans hilosophy and psychology need each other. Philosophy without psychology is a brain in a vat, artificially cut off from emotions and actions and the habits of life. Psychology without ethics is a chicken without a head, focused entirely on evidence without any clear sense of the goal. Practical philosophy is a bridge between the evidence-based techniques of psychology, and the Socratic questioning of philosophy.

P

I wish that, when I was suffering from social anxiety and depression at school, someone had told me about Stoic philosophy, and explained their idea that my emotions are connected to my beliefs and attitudes, and we can transform our feelings by changing our beliefs. Instead I had to find all this out for myself, and it took me several rather unhappy years. When I did finally come across ancient philosophy, it helped me enormously. Here are eight key ideas from Stoicism that, speaking personally, I wish I’d come across at school:

It’s not events that cause us suffering, but our opinion about events. People often think ‘Stoic’ means ‘suppressing your emotions behind a stiff upper lip’. This is not what ancient Stoicism meant. The Stoics thought we could transform emotions by understanding how they’re connected to our beliefs and attitudes. Often what causes us suffering is not a particular adverse event, but our opinion about it. We can make a difficult situation much worse by the attitude we bring to it. This doesn’t mean relentlessly ‘thinking positively’ – it simply means being more mindful of how our attitudes and beliefs create our emotional reality. We don’t realize that often we are the ones causing ourselves suffering through our thoughts. Have you noticed how people react very differently to exactly the same event, how some sink rapidly into despondency while others shrug it off? Perhaps we can learn to be more resilient and intelligent in how we react to events.

Our opinions are often unconscious, but we can bring them to consciousness by asking ourselves questions Socrates said we sleepwalk through life, unaware of how we live and never asking ourselves if our opinions about life are correct or wise. Yet we assume automatically they’re true. The way to bring unconscious beliefs into consciousness is simply to ask yourself questions. Why am I feeling this strong emotional reaction? What interpretation or belief is leading to it? Is that belief definitely true? Where is the evidence for it? We can get into the practice of asking ourselves questions and examining our automatic interpretations. The Stoics used journals to keep track of their automatic responses and to examine them.

We can’t control everything that happens to us, but we can control how we react

This is another very simple and powerful idea from the Stoics, best presented by Epictetus, the slave-philosopher, who divided all human experience into two domains: things we control, things we don’t. We don’t control other people, the weather, the economy, our bodies and health, our reputation, or things in the past and future. We can influence these things, but not entirely control them. The only thing we have complete control over is our beliefs – if we choose to exercise this control. But we often try to exert complete control over something external, and then feel insecure and angry when we fail. Or we fail to take responsibility for our own thoughts and beliefs, and use the outside world as an alibi. Focusing on what you control is a powerful way to reduce anxiety and assert autonomy in chaotic situations – the stories of Rhonda Cornum, Viktor Frankel, James Stockdale or Sam Sullivan to illustrate this idea – they all faced profound adversity but managed to find a sense of autonomy in their response to it. The Serenity Prayer is also a nice encapsulation of this idea.

Choosing your perspective wisely Every moment of the day, we can choose the perspective we take on life, like a film-director choosing the angle of a shot. What are you going to focus on? What’s your angle on life? A lot of the wisdom of Stoicism comes down to choosing your perspective wisely. One of the exercises the Stoics practiced was called the View From Above – if you’re feeling stressed by some niggling annoyances, project your imagination into space and imagine the vastness of the universe. From that cosmic perspective, the annoyance doesn’t seem that important anymore – you’ve made a molehill out of a mountain. Another technique the Stoics used (along with Buddhists and Epicureans) was bringing their attention back to the present moment, if they felt they were worrying too much about the future or ruminating over the past. Seneca told a friend: ‘What’s the point of dragging up sufferings that are over, of being miserable now because you were miserable then?’ # 71 December ‘13—January ‘14 I Healing Springs

Saratoga Integrative Practitioners Network www.saratogaintegrativepractitioners.com The power of habits One thing the Stoics got, which a lot of modern philosophy (and Religious Studies) misses with its focus on theory, is the importance of practice, training, repetition and, in a word, habits. It doesn’t matter what theory you profess in the classroom if you don’t embody it in your habits of thinking and acting. Because we’re such forgetful creatures, we need to repeat ideas over and over until they become ingrained habits. It might be useful to talk about the Stoic technique of the maxim, how they’d encapsulate their ideas into brief memorizable phrases or proverbs (like ‘Everything in moderation’ or ‘The best revenge is not to be like that’), which they would repeat to themselves when needed. Stoics also carried around little handbooks with some of their favorite maxims in. What sayings do you find inspirational? Where could you put them up to remind yourself of them throughout the day?

Fieldwork Another thing the Stoics got, which modern philosophy often misses, is the idea of fieldwork. One of my favorite quotes from Epictetus is: ‘We might be fluent in the classroom but drag us out into practice and we’re miserably shipwrecked’. Philosophy can’t just be theory, it can’t just be talk, it also has to be practice. If you’re trying to improve your temper, practice not losing it. If you’re trying to rely less on comfort eating, practice eating less junk food. Seneca said: ‘The Stoic sees all adversity as training’. I love the bit in the movie Fight Club where students from Tyler Durden’s school get sent out to do homework in the streets (even if the homework is a little, er, inappropriate, like intentionally losing a fight). Imagine if philosophy also gave us street homework, tailor-made for the habits we’re trying to weaken or strengthen, like practicing asking a girl out, or practicing not gossiping about friends, or practicing being kind to someone every day. Imagine if people didn’t think philosophy was ‘just talking’.

Virtue is sufficient for happiness All the previous main points are quite instrumental and value-

neutral, but Stoicism wasn’t just a feel-good therapy, it was an ethics, with a specific definition of the good life: the aim of life for Stoics was living in accordance with virtue. They believed if you found the good life not in externals like wealth or power but in doing the right thing, then you’d always be happy, because doing the right thing is always in your power and never subject to the whims of fortune. A demanding philosophy, and yet also in some ways true – doing the right thing is always in our power. So what are we worried about?

Our ethical obligations to our community The Stoics pioneered the theory of cosmopolitanism – the idea that we have ethical obligations not just to our friends and family, but to our wider community, and even to the community of humanity. Sometimes our obligations might clash – between our friends and our country, or between our government and our conscience (for example, would we resist the Nazis if we grew up in 1930s Germany?) Do we really have moral obligations to people on the other side of the world? What about other species, or future generations? Those are just some ideas I’ve found useful, and which I’ve found people of all ages respond to in workshops (including teenagers). DOWSING for all by Aime Trent Millet ll creatures can be considered natural dowsers in the sense of accessing and responding to. Considered instinct, intuitiveness, psychic knowing or just to inner intuitive (in-to-it) knowledge without having studied the system. Dowsing in the practiced term is the use of tools for focus and the ability to ask the correct questions as a quality of discipline for accuracy.

A

Many people are, knowingly or unknowingly already utilizing this skill. Many times I have had body workers, energetic therapists and practitioners tell me; “My hands just know where to go”. This is in fact what is known as “hand dowsing”. We all know people who can tell you direction, others that know the exact time or where to find certain animals or fish. We have all been thinking of a friend only to have the phone ring to find they are calling or had the phone ring and known who it was before answering. Every parent has had a feeling about a child and then the next communication validates it. Or a mother sends just the right thing to an absent children before being asked.

Practitioners often know before meeting a client or being in direct touch with them what they’ll need or be working on. Ever brought a book or other object someplace it did not appear to be relevant to only to find once there it was exactly what was “coincidently” needed? Think of times in your life when you or another have just “known”. There are almost unlimited methods of correctly accessing information coming through ones consciousness that is accurate, relevant and correct. There are however common and accepted dowsing methods taught through out the world. First; how does this work? We could give many examples of a unified consciousness.. “The hundred monkey effect”. Scientists working on an inland were observed by the monkeys living there while washing their food. Soon the monkeys that saw the act were also copying the act and started washing their food. When the scientists went to the other side of the inland the monkeys there, although not in contact with the first group had started washing their food also. What astonished the men however was the fact that when they visited other inlands the monkeys there

How do we access this? We know it depends on the pituitary and endocrine glands. Muscle testing or kinesiology is actually a type of dowsing. When we encounter our truth, something true to ourselves ( not necessarily another’s untruth), our energy field raises, gets stronger. This shows up as increased muscle strength in kinesiology. Your sight may brighten or lose color sensitivity when one encountesr a “yes” or “no” response to stimulus. Ones audio shell may change, as if moved to a smaller or larger echo chamber. You may feel your body energy drop or raise. One may feel larger or smaller. I know one dowser who trained his eyes to rapidly blink for “no”. Tools are commonly used to “train” or refine this discipline. The most common are: Y-rods, pendulums, L-rods, Bobbers and “Stick” plate. The classic image of the water dowser is a person with a Y shaped stick (willow is the common choice) hands on each fork with the stem facing forward walking slower over ground, having asked the right question in the right way. When over water the stem of the Y is pulled sharply downward toward the water source. In the bible Moses struck the rock with a stick and out came water. A fine dowser was he. Best time to dowse, especially when beginning, is first thing in the morning when fresh and of uncluttered mind. Have a glass of water as this stimulate the endocrine glands over the kidneys and face east. The common direction found in many spiritual disciplines.

With the pendulum one has a weighed string. You hold the string attached at the end of its length, slowly pull the string up through the fingers with the other hand in till the pendulum starts to swing in defined direction or circle. You will usually find 3 spots this happens. These are the lengths that are in relationship with your physical size. One may ask “show me yes” then “show me no”. Usually “yes” is clockwise, “no” counter clockwise or “yes” is forward and back swing and “no” sideways swing. This is not always the case and one wants to define their own response. I prefer a known question such as “I am in Chicago Healing Springs I # 71 December ‘13—January ‘14

were washing their food also although contact between the monkeys was impossible. Before the Second World War in England a species of bird learned to fallow the milk trucks making deliveries, pluck the cardboard stopper from the milk bottles when dropped off and help themselves toe the liquid. Although limited to a range of a few miles the same species of bird started immediately to do the same all over England without viewing the act. Here’s the interesting thing that also separates this “consciousness” and action from time limitations. During the war all milk deliveries were suspended in till 1947. Despite many generations of the birds living and dying before the return of delivery the birds immediately started fallowing the milk trucks, plucking the stoppers and drinking the milk. Genetic memory? Well then…another: scientists worked for decades trying to grow a certain type of crystal. Finally a lab was able, in top secret, to grow the crystal. Within 2 weeks a dozen independent labs world wide announced they had succeeded in growing the crystal at virtually the same time.

IL” (counter clockwise “No”, then “I am in Saratoga Springs New York” (clockwise affirmative). I also often hold the palm of my other hand under the pendulum. With L-rods the short end of each is held loosely in each hand the long end horizontal. One asks the question to be answered in the right way and usually proceeds to walk forward when seeking an energy field such as aura boundary, electrical, EMF or micro-wave field , underground cable or a brake in a water line. The answer “Here” or “Yes” can be the rods crossing. Or they swing “open” when a particular aura layer or health condition is defined or encountered. The bobber works like the Y-rod by being pulled downward or at an angle in response to that that is being searched for. The “stick” plate, my specialty, works in reaction the GSR or Galvanic Skin Response. When a person’s energy field senses their truth the GSR changes like a magnet.. When softly rubbing a surface, Formica is a good surface. When a “yes” or affirmative response happens the fingers seem to “stick”. I use this method in “radionics” a refined health analysis and balancing method. How to ask the question is the part requiring the most training and discipline. If asking “is there water here” the answer will always be yes, as there is water everywhere and in everything. “Is there portable drinking water with in reachable distance in amounts suitable to provide a family of 4 year around?” is a better question. Questions to keep most available: “May I dowse for this?” “Is there another time I should dowse for this?”(if “no” to the first) “Is there another way I should ask this question?”, “Is there another question I should ask?” (or ask first). .

PISCES ASCENDANT DECEMBER: Career or the equivalent, status and aims in life are important for this month. Following Uranus going direct on the 17th, you are more flexible in matters that deal with money and personal possessions. Keep yourself open to new opportunities. The Full Moon also on the 17th, rules your home and personal affairs. This is the time when old matters are often resolved. JANUARY: The New Year begins with you helping your friends with their community and humanitarian projects. You are developing a more universal outlook on life. Following the Full Moon on the 16th, your hobbies and spending time with loved ones bring you happiness. Jupiter remains retrograde all month and new creative and romantic possibilities become possible, if applicable. “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away” —Henry David Thoreau “Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing”

—Muhammed Ali

“I said to myself, I have things in my head that are not like what anyone has taught me - shapes and ideas so near to me - so natural to my way of being and thinking that it hasn't occurred to me to put them down. I decided to start anew, to strip away what I had been taught.” —Georgia O'Keefe

Body-Mind Centering & The Moving Body

“The way we see the world shapes the way we treat it. If a mountain is a deity, not a pile of ore; if a river is one of the veins of the land, not potential irrigation water; if a forest is a sacred grove, not timber; if other species are biological kin, not resources; or if the planet is our mother, not an opportunity—then we will treat each other with greater respect. Thus is the challenge, to look at the world from a different perspective.” —David Suzuki
