Please join as we gather together beyond the printed page.

Bring with you a question you have been asking yourself There is evidence that for most of recorded history, communities would gather to commune and discuss the goings on of the day. One form of gathering were Salons. In Ancient Greece were called symposia and served as conversations and feasts. The Roman banquets were an offshoot to provide an egalitarian forum of the sharing of ideas. The tradition continued much later during the French Revolution salons.

“Community is a safe place precisely because no one is attempting to heal or convert you, to fix you, to change you. Instead, the members accept you as you are. You are free to be you. And being so free, you are free to discard defenses, masks, disguises; free to seek your own psychological and spiritual health; free to become your whole and holy self. —M. Scott Peck. The Different Drum.

“It is probable that the next Buddha will not take the form of an individual. The next Buddha may take the form of a community, a community practicing understanding and loving kindness, a community practicing mindful living. This may be the most important thing we can do for the survival of the earth.” —Thich Nhat Han

Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you In January, The Healing Springs Journal hosted a salon (there will be another on March 17, email for details). The primary question discussed was ‘what sustains you?’ The answers were varied and inspiring. Looking back at the conversation, it seems I never answered the question myself. Realizing this, I gave it some thought and my list kept growing. Then the following memory came to mind. In November, I scheduled a photo shoot with Deborah Neary, who creates portraits of women in nature. The morning of our appointment, I woke up more excited than I had in months. While still in bed, I was scheming up ways to wear feathers in my hair and clothes that would resemble the deerskin dress I didn’t own but wished I did. Nature is like a classroom for me and I wanted my respect and reverence to show in the pictures. We met at the barn where my horse Tom lives, in order to include him and my dog Z in some photos. I adore my animal companions, and was happy to have photos together. Yet, that seemed common in comparison to the images I was conjuring up in my mind of my body and soul melting into the surroundings. We brought Tom into an empty paddock and Z followed. Both animals were free to roam the couple acres of space and were busy exploring the territory on their own. Deborah picked a spot in the sun for me to sit on the ground alone and play my flute. As soon as notes hit the air, both Tom and Z looked up to see what was making such noise and came over to have a better look and listen. I often sit on the ground while these two are loose and they are regularly close by. So again, this felt ordinary. Deborah, on the other hand, mentioned it seemed otherworldly to her, which planted a seed in my thoughts. That seed sprouted days later when Deborah sent me a single photo from the day and I saw in a picture the magic of my every day life. Turns out, wearing feathers and deerskin are unneccessary to show a connection to the world. All we need is to play our song. Shortly after, I read a description of the Kokopelli. Having lived in Colorado for a number of years, I saw the image so often it became contrived. Reading the actual meaning, I’m not sure I ever knew the true symbolism; “In ancient legend, Kokopelli the flute player was the symbol of happiness and joy...Kokopelli embodies everything pure and spiritual about music...” and more. I’d like to think Kokopelli was with us during the photo shoot and that he will stay always. For his medicine coupled with my animal friends and nature and you have more than half my list of what sustains me. This begs to question how often something powerful and close to my heart has been dismissed simply because it seemed contrived. What sustains you and where is the magic in your every day life? Both can sometimes, if not often, be disguised as ordinary. This could be a child’s laughter, the croak of a flying Raven, or an inside joke shared with coworkers. It is all magic. My sincere desire is that we recognize it as such in the moment it takes place, not only afterwards in an image from the eye of a camera. In peace, awe, and magic,

are used in different wisdom traditions, but we’re all saying the same thing: this is the time of the Awakening. The time is now. As spiritual beings having a human experience, our souls have a plan for our lives before we’re born. We know there will be challenges, but we expect to win. Then we’re born and it’s harder than we thought it would be. Our lives get off track. We get stuck. The Lightworkers Healing Method is a system of Angelically Guided Energy Healing, and a compelling spiritual growth vehicle with the exceptional goal of aligning us with our soul's life purpose. It improves the present by working with Guides, Angels, past lives and future lives, in a unique and powerful process.

Modern Shamanic Journey Workshop In this workshop, Katrina Clay will facilitate a modern Shamanic Experience. We will examine the importance of partnering with the Earth; who as our elder has a lot of wisdom to share. By touching the essence of Nature, you will also touch the root of yourself. This connection is always flowing through us, as it is the very essence that animates our system/our being. When we touch it and begin to allow our awareness to encompass it, our lives begin to embody a new, yet ancient, way of interacting with life. And then we will participate in two modern shamanic journeys, which are facilitated with the steady rhythmic beat from a frame drum along. Come experience the drum as a tool to adventure.

‘Healing Springs Journal’ Hosts Soulful Writing Group and ongoing Salons As a way to write with more accountability, Katrina Clay, publisher of ‘The Healing Springs Journal’, has created a group called Soulful Writing. In this group we will write from promts that will get you into your heart and writing from your soul. No experience necessary. The first Healing Springs Salon was held in January. After much thoughtful conversation, it was the general consensus to keep putting the events on. The format will be a short presentation to set the conversation up around a topic. All have the opportunity to speak or not. Afterwards, there will be time to socialize. The next one will be on Monday, March 17 in the Relaxation Lounge in the

Time to Heal by Wendy Ball here is a lot of emotional pain happening in our world. For every war there are thousands, even millions, of victims. For every disaster there are thousands who suffer terrible loss. But honestly, it’s there everywhere we look: a friend has just separated from their partner, a parent is suffering the ravages of age, a sibling has just lost their wife to cancer.

T

These frightening and emotionally painful events both leave their mark, and stir up one’s experience of previous events of a similar nature. Most of think of this as “life.” And it is; it is an aspect of life that can disorganize our nervous systems and leave us permanently vulnerable. How we deal with traumatic, disturbing, emotionally painful experience depends on a number of things. Some of us seem to be naturally resilient and have the ability to bounce back from bad experiences given time and a little help from our friends. Many of us carry ‘baggage,’ i.e. the impact of prior hurts that we have not been able to digest and sit like toxic sludge in our psyches. When we experience something bad the lights get turned on in our baggage room and we find ourselves reacting with far more intensity than the current situation warrants, or we slide into gloom for days at a time. Worse yet, traumatic experience, i.e. experiences which are

emotionally overwhelming and are in fact or feel life threatening, may trigger physically or emotionally violent reactions. We have a lot of ways of defending ourselves from noticing emotional pain. It’s overwhelming. And there’s nothing we can do about most of it. Or is there? Ted Carriere, a Dutch development economist struggling with the impact of trauma that he was witnessing in developing countries in which he was working, gave an impassioned talk on TED on October 31, 2013. He had recently learned about a powerfully effective treatment for clearing trauma imprints called EMDR (eye movement desitization and reprocessing). He said: “We see the human face of trauma every where we see fear, anguish, despair, depression, or anxiety.” Much trauma is a result of human violence. Violence begets violence. We know this. What we have not yet seriously considered as individuals and as a society is that healing trauma can decrease violence. Healing trauma is peace-making in one of it's most effective forms. Rolf Carriere urges us to consider that if we want a less violent world we need to interrupt the intergenerational transmission of violence and we can do this by healing trauma with effective modalities such as EMDR.

This is a time when our knowledge about the impact of trauma and of ways to treat it is rapidly expanding. We begin to understand that trauma cannot be healed by the mind alone, because it is held in the body, in our cells, and in our energy field. Therefore healing must engage us physically and energetically as well as mentally. There are a variety of modalities now that can effectively support healing: somatic or body centered therapy, chakra healing, energy healing. What is important is that we make emotional healing a priority, individually and collectively I believe it is as important a factor in creating peace and ensuring our future as any other. Make 2014 your year to support emotional healing in yourself, your loved ones, and your community. Tapping In, a Self-Healing Strategy From EMDR. Think of something that is somewhat disturbing to you. Don’t pick something overwhelming. Thank of what would help in this situation: a feeling of competence? Ability to protect yourself? Knowing that you are lovable? Access a memory of having experienced the quality you need, or an image of this quality based on seeing this quality modeled by someone whether real or imagined. Continue to think about the quality until you feel it emotionally and experience it in your body. Find a phrase that goes with this: e.g. “I know what it is to be competent, or simply, “I am competent. Then anchor this experience, tap in this resource alternately right-left, right-left with your hands somewhere on your body. You do not have to tap long, just a few taps will do. Now notice whether you feel more confident, more relaxed, more lovable, or whatever it is that your disturbance indicates you need. For those of you who have experienced EMDR please remember that you are not processing a negative memory here, you are increasing the strength of and your access to something positive that can be helpful to you. #72 February—March, 2014 I Healing Springs

Gluten

Intolerance by Michael Lenz e see so many people in our pharmacy practice who are suffering from gastrointestinal issues. I had one customer tell me that within a half-hour of eating a bagel, her stomach would get so distended from bloating that she looked pregnant! Why is this happening? More importantly, what can we do about it?

W

One possible culprit is Gluten. There are different levels of intolerance to gluten. The worst case scenario is actual celiac disease, which is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. If you have celiac disease, eating gluten triggers an immune response in your small intestine. Over time, this reaction produces inflammation that damages the small intestine’s lining and prevents absorption of some nutrients. The intestinal damage can cause weight loss, bloating and sometimes diarrhea. Eventually, your brain, nervous system, bones, liver and other organs can be deprived of vital nourishment. There’s no cure for celiac disease — but following a strict glutenfree diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing. Many people, however, have many of the signs and symptoms of celiac disease but when tested, come up negative for actual celiac disease. Just because you may not have actual celiac disease doesn’t mean you aren’t suffering from gluten intolerance. It’s estimated that about 15% of the U.S. population is gluten intolerant. Symptoms of glucose intolerance range from gastrointestinal issues such as bloating and diarrhea to neurological, inflammatory, mood, and autoimmune symptoms.

One of the best ways to determine if you have gluten intolerance is to simply eliminate gluten from your diet for a period of time. We often recommend a strict 21 day elimination diet to our patients experiencing these symptoms. The vast majority of the time our patients feel amazingly better during and after the 21 days. If gluten is reintroduced and the symptoms return, it’s a good indication that gluten intolerance is at least one of the culprits. There are other areas that we explore in a functional medicine consultation, but being aware of the negative effects of gluten sensitivity is one step in shoring up your GI tract and improving your health and vitality. My dad was in the last leg of a long cancer battle. He had been told that nothing more could be done, except perhaps to get accepted into a study that was testing a new drug. He just barely qualified as a test subject, and gratefully signed on. The protocol involved three sessions, spaced months apart, in which 19 vials of his blood would be taken, sent away and mixed with a drug, then put back into him a week later.

When giving up so much blood, Dad’s vein would sometimes collapse. Mom was taught to gently maneuver his arm until a position was reached where the blood flow resumed. If, for any reason, Dad was unable to fulfill the requirements, he would be dropped from the study. No more specialist follow-up. No more hope. This was his final treatment. Dad’s vein collapsed with six vials to go, but this time nothing my mother did could get things going again. As Mom searched for a way to help, she remembered something I’d said at a previous dinner visit. I was talking about a class I was taking called Energy Medicine. I had enrolled with some skepticism, and found that it feels really good, opens the body to profound healing and anyone can do it because energy follows focused intent. I learned that tracing a figure-8 in the air over a part of the body in need of healing is a simple, powerful way to affect change. My teacher, Susan Shanley, had repeatedly said, “If you take away nothing else from this class, take figure-8s.” That was one of the things I’d emphasized to my parents and that is what Mom remembered. She tried tracing figure-8s over Dad’s arm. As she did, the monitor stopped beeping. The doctor, whose back was toward my parents as he filled out papers, said “Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.” Mom did, and Dad filled the remaining vials. When a nurse entered the room and looked at her with suspicion, Mom said, “Just doing a little voodoo here,” which made the doctor turn around. He left the room, coming back a few minutes later to ask about the modality she was using.

BILLION RISING FOR JUSTICE

Friday February 14, 2014 from 12:00 to 7:00

ONE BILLION RISING began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. One billion daughters, mothers, grandmothers, sisters, lovers and friends. The National Museum of Dance will join activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, and women and men across the world as we express their outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women. Stop by the National Museum of Dance for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, an hour! There will be dancing, sharing, and drumming throughout the day. Please check our website for specific times and dance genres. This is a free event that is open to everyone. Join your community in an effort to raise awareness about the epidemic of violence against women and rise in solidarity with the One Billion Rising around the world.

“Focus your intent. Move slowly with sensitivity for as long as necessary. Repeat daily to make it stick. Speed up your own healing and that of your loved ones. Why? Because you can.” Donna Eden, the founder of Eden Energy Medicine, teaches this technique. I’d like to tell you more about figure-8s, so that you can work small miracles too. The figure-8 is an energy of integration. Consider its shape, opposite sides seamlessly flowing into each other to make a balanced whole. This shape, traced with a palm or fingertips, on or off the body, can be used any time healing is called for, but following are some situations where it is especially helpful.

1

When you want to easily assimilate something you must take in, whether it is a food, a pill, an IV bag, or the words of an antagonist in a meeting, figure-8 from yourself to the substance a few times before taking it. (This helped my Mom avoid the side effects of anesthesia.) When the substance is a someone, you may prefer to make an 8 of light in your mind between you and the other person.

2

Figure-8 around your whole body in the morning to keep your energies strong and your “space” protected from intrusions. This can also alleviate over-sensitivity, both emotionally and physically. Autism spectrum children often have holes in their energy fields that repeated figure-8ing helps sew up, lessening their sensory overload.

3

Use 8s off the body when there is unbearable pain. If the recipient reports increased pain, start further away and gradually move closer.

Focus your intent. Move slowly with sensitivity for as long as necessary. Repeat daily to make it stick. Speed up your own healing and that of your loved ones. Why? Because you can. Hypnosis is not

TRANCE by George Guarino, CH, CI he words ‘trance’ and ‘hypnosis’ are often used interchangeably but are they really the same thing? I would say not.

T

Trance has been defined as: Trance denotes a variety of processes, ecstasy, techniques, modalities and states of mind, awareness and consciousness. Trance states may occur involuntarily and unbidden. It’s the ‘involuntarily and unbidden’ aspect of trance in this definition that I feel is the basis of the difference between trance and hypnosis. For hypnosis to happen there must be a client, a hypnotist, and a suggestion/instruction. Perhaps the client and the hypnotist are one and the same as in self-hypnosis but all three things must be present. Now, can we get to hypnosis through trance? I would say yes. Trance is a wonderful way to bring a client into hypnosis. Trance is something that everyone can relate to. The driving trance when you find yourself arriving at your exit on the highway without a conscious memory of the miles it took to get there is a very common trance. Daydreaming out the window lost in thoughts of an upcoming vacation is a trance state. Getting lost in a good book or a movie are examples of trances that we hope to attain when we invest our time in these activities.

All of these examples are experiences that most anyone has had. As the hypnotist suggests that you imagine or pretend you are on a beach listening to the gentle waves lapping endlessly, wetting the shoreline, returning to the vast ocean which causes a sense of peace and comfort throughout your entire body and mind, you are being guided through a trance into hypnosis. Hypnosis begins when the client follows the suggestion ‘imagine the scene’ which causes the effortless focused attention that is the gateway to hypnosis. At that point the hypnotist continues suggesting ideas to the client that are accepted more and more effortlessly, allowing the client to focus only on what the hypnotist suggests and begin to accept the suggestions that address the change the client has come to make. The suggestions can certainly be for the client to come up with their own insightful solutions or be told directly to accept the suggestions that the hypnotist and client has discussed beforehand and have agreed are in the best interest of the client. Client-centered hypnosis can allow a combination of the two approaches because some clients respond to a permissive style while others respond better to the direct approach. Both are highly effective for giving the client permission to make the change they have come for.

The point is that it is heightened-suggestibility managed by the hypnotist that addresses the change and not the trance state previous to the client being in hypnosis. Of course the suggestion can be to ‘remain in trance and discover the solution, for you know what needs to be done, don’t you?’ When a client takes ownership of their solution like this, the solution that is revealed is very powerful and can last a lifetime.

Are you ready to create the peace, joy and abundance you deserve? Wait no longer

George Guarino,CH,CI sees individual clients in two offices, Delmar and Clifton Park, He is now offering hypnosis workshops for those interested in learning and practicing hypnosis on Tuesday nights as well as full NGH Hypnosis Certification classes. The HEALING

REFLEX Simple techniques. Profound results.

by Patricia Blackburn t is heartbreaking, when a parent hears that their child will not succeed in school. Many options are offered: accommodations, special equipment, medications and specific skill training such as those for handwriting. All mostly deal with the symptoms.

I

The reflex integration techniques use the full spectrum of movement as the door to health and development, awakening the innate intelligence of nature within the body. Those children, in our care, who were labeled and given a prognosis of failure develop and succeed while the symptoms abate. The 23 reflexes we work with are the original programming for body movement, development of cognition and more. For example if a newborn is startled, he reflexively goes into a predictable movement and cries; this is the Moro, one foundation for movement which also is relevant to developing trust and self-regulation. The Masgutova Neuromuscular and Reflex Integration method was originated by Svetlana Masgutova, Ph.D.following her doctoral work in Russia in 1985. She began developing her techniques, following a catastrophic train accident in the Ural Mountains. She found movement to be the door to health and development, and enrichment of potential. I use Masgutova techniques with amazing results. I have been practicing reflex integration therapy for 4 years. The time it takes for her clients to reach a place of success varies. It can take as little as 5 months or as much as 3 years. Each treatment plan is individualized. The method employs exercises and hands-on protocols which reprogram the circuit, making a clear and effective

connection between stimulation and motor response. When that happens with repetition, myelination of nerve fiber occurs making the changes permanent. The body–mind gravitates to the most efficient function integrating dysfunctional reactions. Several examples will illustrate this: in the case of a 6-year old boy with anxiety and hypersensitive hearing, he became more successful in school, lost his fear of insects and was able to use the public bathroom, all within a year. A 9-year old girl who also was very anxious and not doing well in school achieved her goals within 5 months and began receiving constant praise from her teachers, even mat which was a former weakness. As needed, I uses Therapeutic Listening, Brain Gym, Craniosacral Therapy and Acupressure in addition to the Masgutova Method Challenges we are abele to address: LD, ADD, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Asberger’s Syndrome, Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Oppositional/Defiance Disorder, delayed learning, fears and phobias, low motivation, aggressive behavior, sequelae of trauma Patricia Blackburn has been an Occupational Therapist for 20 years. Why

SoundEffective Healing is

by Jill Mattson ou have no doubt heard the tired cliché: “she’s thinking outside the box”. how about the one where we do our thinking outside the brain?!

Y

It's true, recent work in the fields of Psychology and Cognitive Science shows abundant evidence that the body and the environment around us are intimately linked to our cognition. The body can think independently of the brain in a mechanism called “Embodied Cognition” (EC). The long accepted paradigm relies on the all-powerful brain creating and manipulating disembodied constructs of real life things. Disembodied representations are moved around the mental chessboard as the brain solves all of our problems and makes all the decisions. However, that is not how it always happens and further, once you see the body's important role in the holistic person, some of the wonders of Alternative Health and Wellness become easier to understand and embrace. The alternate way of understanding our thought processes is labeled Embodied Cognition. Recent findings demonstrate that our bodies and the environment around us are important in our cognition and play a vital part in our thinking and decision making processes. It’s not the disembodied representations in our brain, the back-and-forth firing of countless neurons that alone produce our thoughts, but the indivisible interplay of our bodies and the ecosystems that surround and contain us - that is where thought resides. The job description for the brain has changed; instead of having to represent information about the external world and use that knowledge to output commands, the brain is now a part of a broader system that encompasses perception and action as well. The role of the body has been promoted - significantly.

eyes on the ball and runs in a curved path, thus making the curved (decelerating parabolic) motion of the ball appear to remain as a straight line. The outfielder can easily track the ball to the correct endpoint. The player uses his brain - but only as part of the action; he uses his perception - to process the visual input he is receiving along with physical cues like his running speed to solve the task. These EC breakthroughs in Psychology are fine, but what we really are interested in is Alternative Healing - specifically Sound Healing for me. How can sound be used to do powerful healing and growth? The findings of Embodied Cognition show the power of the body to understand itself and its environment and to act autonomously - even think. Our bodies have far more potential than previously understood. In a related manner, sound energy does not interact only with our ears and our brains through the sense of hearing. Rather sound - in our holistic view - interacts with body, brain, intellect, emotions and subtle energy systems. Sound, in the form of very specific, select frequencies OR in the form of special music can perform a myriad of wonders on us. Sound heals on multiple levels: appropriate frequencies stimulate cell regeneration; sound has been used to increase intelligence and memory; sound can influence our mental and emotional aspects. Perhaps in its most remarkable healing modality - sound activates the mind to power the body to heal itself. Healing chemicals are produced, the immune system goes into hyper drive. Fast, natural healing and regeneration occurs; toxins are eliminated, pathogens are destroyed, energy is unblocked and true health and wellness is restored.

EC advocates say that often our bodies - through perception and action - can actually replace the need for the brain - and its intricate mental gyrations. An oft-used example to describe EC involves the actions that a baseball outfielder takes to catch a fly ball.

Science is finally catching up with healers old and new; the body has many powers that are often overlooked. It can think, heal itself and intuitively evaluate its surroundings. Not only is sound ever present in the environment, but sound has the unique property of interacting with us on all levels. The symbiotic and synergistic affects of addressing the holistic being were well understood by the ancient Shaman as he activated healing through the use of sound (chants, drums etc). Modern Sound Healers are employing these old techniques alongside the latest discoveries with amazing results. Tune in!

How does the player move at the crack of the bat and get to exactly the right place just in time to catch the ball? One approach would be for the brain to do a complicated calculation taking into account the speed and direction of the ball, the forces acting on it - the math and physics calculations approach - and then predict where to intersect the ball as it comes to the nearest point to the outfielder. According to Golonka, the baseball player does not do the math, and he does not run in a straight line to the catch. Instead, the player keeps his

The Girl Who Sang to the Buffalo by Kent Nerburn or more than two decades I have tried, honestly and respectfully, to walk the difficult line between the world of Native America and the world of those of us whose people came, willingly or otherwise, to these American shores.

F

I have done this because I believe that we, as Americans, are poorly served by our willful avoidance of the true facts of our national experience, and also because I believe that the lives and ways of the Native American peoples have much to teach us all. It has been a fascinating and deeply rewarding journey. It has taken me into classrooms and sweat lodges, onto basketball courts and to kitchen tables. It has found me on dusty reservation back roads, in deep northern forests, and on lonely mountain passes. Most of all, it has taken me into the hearts and lives of some of the kindest, most fun-loving, most thoughtful people I have ever met. ime. Reserves. Creating space, space for things to grow, expand, breathe. Makes a girl wanna take in a nice long breath. And breathe it out ever so slowly. My relax-o-meter just registered a great big “aaaaahhhhhhh. We all have needs and the choices of what we do are usually driven by these needs; we go to work because we need money/security/love the work. We cook dinner for our families because we have a need to take care of them/are creative in the kitchen. We volunteer because we feel a need to be appreciated. These are all valuable activities that nurture us by nurturing others. What if we made unplanned playtime just as important? Got our Indiana Joneses on and explored? Or did absolutely nothing? The more space we create to play and explore, the more we get to truly be ourselves. And being ourselves is where we recharge. The annoying little brat in my head (Bootsy) loves to snidely poke holes in these ideas: “Yeah, lifestyles of the rich. Ya gotta have the money reserves to get to that place. There’s no time for such nonsense. Our culture’s hard work ethic rubs right up against the idea of creating reserves of time. Yes, basic needs must be met. And reserves of money are easy to understand, if not as easy to accomplish. Take care of the money - call on the financial experts for help – figure that piece out. (Financial well being is a whole other loaded topic.)

How do you like the notion of having more than you need? The process of creating reserves is like a super duper smoothie for your soul, an exercise in tweaking whatever in your life is standing between you and your definition of a high quality of life. As I’ve written about in past issues, start by becoming clear on your core values (June/July issue), stop tolerating things in your life that drain your energy (Aug./Sept. issue), and learn to calm those inner voices (gremlins) that warn or dismiss or scream when you begin to make any important changes. Here are some ways to slip time reserves into your day: • Block out chunks of time on your calendar to do absolutely nothing. See what happens. • Make a list of all the things you do that you don’t want to do. Zap ‘em. Delegate. Hire someone to do it. Barter it away. Eliminate it. • If you say the word should, stop and think if the task is really necessary. Shoulds are red flags – ask yourself “Will my world fall apart if I don’t do that?” and “Will doing it leave me feeling fulfilled in some way?” Stop shoulding all over yourself. • When you’re asked to do something, ask for time to get back to the asker. “I’ll have to check my calendar” or “I’ll let you know in 24 hours” gives you time to make sure you really want to spend your time this way. • Carry a NoBook. Consult before you agree to do something. In your NoBook, write all the wonderful ways you can spend reserves you create. Glue in pictures. • Really wrap your brain around what you want to do in your reserved time. Imagine doing it, write about it, draw, collect

You’ll be more likely to create a reserve for it. Chase that good feeling! • Eliminate your to-do list. Really. Try it. To-do lists can drive us. I was driven and, as I learned, more always gets added on. Ugh. I’ve dropped it. Once in a while, all my life facets will start needing attention all at once and then a to-do list helps me meet tighter deadlines. And I know people who would be absolutely lost without a to-do list. But you can treat it as an experiment. Why not try one small thing to start creating reserves? Leave 10 minutes early so you can pull over when a magnificent sunrise presents itself. Announce to your family 15 minutes of Me Time when you are left alone to do whatever you want, uninterrupted. Make space to find the joy you had as a child. And maybe, as you stand and stare, you’ll stumble on Serendipity, luck that takes the form of finding valuable or pleasant things that are not looked for*. Oop. There I go again, taking in a nice long breath. Gotta go – empty space is calling me. *Merriam-Webster Annie Gregson is a high-spirited life coach who serves the world with compassion and authenticity, injecting fun into the serious business of creating your life. Ask the ractitioner

Q

Inasmuch as we have no question from our audience, I have asked our practitioners to write something about an area of interest that has come to their attention recently and would be important for our readership (editor)

Oriental Medicine; Gregg St Clair I’ve been working with a concept that, though not exactly new, has infused a dynamic element into my practice and lifestyle. To complement my acupuncture and Oriental Medical practice, I recently received my certificate in a yearlong study program to be a personal trainer. While studying fat loss and muscle gain I became engrossed by the concept of breakdown and rebuilding. As part of our metabolic processes we have what is called a catabolic state (breakdown) and an anabolic state (rebuild). Turns out that all day, every day; 100% of the time we are falling apart and disintegrating. We lose bone, muscle mass, brain and blood cells constantly! The good news is that at the same time our body is continuously trying to repair and rebuild itself. When we are young repair seems to happen easily no matter what we do. As long as the repair curve is ahead we will usually maintain homeostasis and be healthy. However, as we age, breakdown eventually starts to win out. In Oriental Medicine we say that balancing Yin and Yang will maintain health, which perfectly mirrors breakdown (Yin) and repair (Yang). One of the concepts we promote in Oriental Medicine is longevity and we have developed many practices such as acupuncture, breathing techniques, the use of herbs, sex techniques and exercises like Tai Chi or meditation to help achieve this goal. If we make poor lifestyle decisions such as smoking we will instigate the breakdown state accelerating the aging process. What’s exciting about this is it means we have some degree of control over the quality and quantity of our life. If we do healthy things we will be healthy and vice versa. In 2011 I wrote a book called the Natural Health Companion which is a holistic handbook of mind-body medicine detailing a comprehensive approach to healing, but I did not include the breakdown repair idea and wish I could go back and add a chapter on the concepts. But no worries, I get to include it here for you. In my book I detail 12 Practices essential to health. The first four, what I call the foundations, are; drinking clean water, eating natural/organic foods, exercising properly and reducing stress. The other eight concepts focus more on our mind and spirit, something I feel crucial to comprehensive well-being. However, we are talking about breakdown and repair, and if you do nothing but these four foundations of health you will be on your way to a healthier longer life. I was already practicing many health techniques, but the concepts of breakdown and repair made the processes seem 24 Healing Springs I #72 February—March, 2014

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell It is a rather commonly held misconception that the notion of: "we create our own reality", extends to the idea that all illness, from colds to cancer represent a mis-alignment or even a punishment for transgressions, large or small and that we are responsible for all the bad things that happen. Recently this came up with a long time client, as we explored his relationship to food, his family, his history from childhood, and his unfulfilled dreams. He has studied many spiritual traditions, which for the most part have helped him to find balance where others would have labored long to heal those traumas. As this is an area which I have explored for many years, and I have many clients that face this dilemma, I am choosing this as my topic for this post. The answer to the universal truth of whether we create our own reality, is found symbolically in the Taoist symbol of yin and yang. In other words true and not true. The whole is an interplay of known and not known, where life is the limitlessness of possibilities, not the absence of them, or even where a limit to them exists. There is the light and the dark in perfect balance, even within each one of us. Do we create circumstances where terrible events come to a light of understanding in our reality? Yes. We have the power to change those difficult circumstances or at the very least, to come to accept them with a balanced mind and heart. The path toward change can appear daunting, too difficult for us to manage. It usually takes on that appearance, especially when the issue is one that our soul has chosen for us to explore, but it can also be so simple, that in the mere act of moving forward, grace comes to us and we are supported in the choice, especially one that is in our highest good. Usually illness comes from avoiding, ignoring, fearing truth or some other good reason. But it can also be given to us to explore deeper truths relating to our "human-ness". There is no blame in this interpretation, there is only learning. 'Bad' habits can be broken, or better yet: healed. Our history is the foundation of learning opportunities, that we can use to explore the many options that life offers us. Does this mean that we go it alone, refuse to accept that life offers many tools for our evolvement? No. Does it mean that we have to take an adversarial position to our illness and its manifestations? No. All manifestations on this plane of existence are human at its essential core. How we interpret those manifestations, how we respond is also part of our human response and can always find a different viewpoint. Resentment for the trials that have been placed before us, only serves to limit our choices. We have within us the unfettered gift of grace, which is given in the form of loving what is and listening to the inclinations to face our truth and relinquish our fears. When you feel the need to follow a path that digresses from the

Chiropractor; Lynn Allison My research has led me to a couple of hot topics in health, food and nutrition. DNA and Epigenetic is one topic. Researchers have wondered why identical twins who share the exact same DNA would not have the same health issues, why one twin can get cancer and the other not, for example. Come to find out our DNA strands are woven with a network that can turn off or on markers related to genetic traits. Even better, what turns them on and off is our lifestyle. In other words, you and your twin may have the potential for cancer in your DNA (family) but choices made of how you eat, what you eat, stress levels, smoking, alcohol consumption, etc. make the difference in how and if it is expressed. Funny, since our lifestyle controls the expression of our DNA, this is the best reason to commit to improving your habits this year. We do not have to be our destiny if we accept responsibility for our health choices and teach our children how to care best for themselves. My second topic of interest is our microbiome, our intestinal flora. It is much grander than just our guts. For every cell in our body, we should coexist with 7 microbes. We are our own compost pile. Gardeners know that microbes make good soil, releasing the nutrients from the waste so our plants can take them in easily and thrive. Well, microbes do the same for us and we are very deficient

in them. People in third world countries have healthier microbiomes than most Americans. We in America have about have the colonies we should have in our digestive tract. It seems the over cleaning and phobia of germs has left us susceptible to decreased beneficial microbes who help us fight off the harmful microbes. Antibiotics do not help especially if not followed up with probiotics as well as being included in our foods. But it is bigger than that, we used to allow for natural fermentation of foods- breads, wines, vegetable like pickles, sauerkraut, kim chi can be found in multiple cultures and now the version we eat are pasteurized and sterilized. Sourdough starters were passed down from generation to generation and were a large colony of beneficial microbes. We also consumed products that were allowed to ferment slowly, like bread. Now it is made in 4 hours or less with the one yeast that is “rapid rising” Make bread at home and it takes longer than 4 hours if done right. A baker in LA sold bread at a farmer's market that many gluten sensitive people were able to eat. What was different is he used a natural sourdough starter with a multiple colony and let the bread rise 35 days in a cooler. The slow fermentation broke down more gluten strands, released more of the nutrients within the flour and their bodies knew it. Better yet, they have shown that if the starter is left out to gather a spectrum of microbes, it creates a colony of beneficial microbes by itself. Artisanal products are becoming available that use natural fermentation so we don't have to make our own bread. Stop using antibacterial products, go play in the dirt, eat naturally fermented foods and drinks, take in a multi-strain probiotic. Your digestion will be happier, your immune system will blossom and your serotonin levels will rise. No constipation, less colds or flu and SAD will ease. Develop a Brave Heart by Linda McKenney ome of us operate in “I’m not enough” mode and never take a risk, because we believe that we are not good, smart, or worthy enough to deserve.

S

Some of us risk, and it doesn't go as expected. We call it a mistake, failure or catastrophe and never risk again. I've experienced both. And as a result of the wise counsel of others and the pain of an inauthentic life, I found a way to be vulnerable and risk. Without realizing it, the word BRAVE was my guide. What has helped me you may find useful as well.

Brand yourself. I had to change my internal brand. We all have those little voices in our heads (come on, admit it) and some are more persistent than others. As a young woman, my voice was mostly negative and restricting. I needed to change that and learn to love my imperfect, but worthy, self. A body of evidence proposes that language influences how we think. Replace negative talk inside your head with positive talk. Recall the

words I used to describe a risk that didn't go as expected: mistake, failure, catastrophe? Your label may influence whether you try again. If you replace the word failure with lesson, for example, you are more likely not to give up. That’s what Thomas Edison did and 10,000 lessons later, he had a light bulb. He lit up my life! There is also a difference between calling something you did a failure and calling yourself a failure. Pay attention to how you speak to yourself about yourself.

Reflection. We all have an obligation to daydream and imagine. We are in a world in which society is huge, and we may feel inconsequential, like a grain of sand on the beach. But the truth is, individuals change their world. We can design our future by imagining that things can be different.

Solitude. Time in solitude might seem to be frittered away, but it can be

Acceptance. Accept what you can control and spend your energy there. You are not always responsible for the outcome. You can celebrate your personal effort because that is all you have control over. Your lists, planning and action are all within your control, and that is powerful. If things don’t work out exactly as planned, there may be a lesson in that and opportunity for growth. Dalai Lama: ”Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.”

Visualize. When you are taking time to reflect, visualize how, not what, you want to be in life. Keep a journal of dreams and desires. Because your sub-conscious mind does not know how to differentiate between what is real or what is imagination, it will treat imagination as the real thing. And focus your visualization on what you want, not on what you don't. Or you could wind up with coal in your stocking.

Experience Emotions. Everything we experience is a lesson. Vitamins

& Supplements?

by Sarah LoBisco ow that the New Year has begun and the holiday “goodies” are gone, many people have decided to focus on better body care. This could include implementing an exercise program, making dietary changes, and/or adding vitamins to their wellness routine.

N

Recently, there has been some bad press on incorporating multivitamins into a healthy lifestyle. This is based on two studies and an editorial in December’s Annals of Internal Medicine. Unfortunately, much of the research was based on bad science. In fact, according to Science Daily, most large clinical trials of vitamin supplements are of little value because of the poor methods used to study their effects.

Some examples of flaws of these studies include: • • • •

biased comparison groups not accounting for the absorption of nutrients neglecting a baseline measurement using the incorrect potency and/or correct active ingredients of the vitamins • not accounting for quality of the vitamin, the correct ratios, or considering the inactive ingredients that could have skewed the results. (These are just some of the flaws of studies’ research methods. I wrote a more detailed explanation in my January blog on my website, dr-lobisco.com.)

The fact is many people do need additional nutritional supplementation to their diet. This is because: • The environment is toxic with heavy metals, insecticides, pesticides, radiation, and chemicals. • Diets are laden with genetically modified foods, trans-fats, antibiotics and hormones

• Many people have genetic predispositions or certain health conditions that require more nutrients than the daily recommended values. • The majority of the population is on one or more medications which can deplete vitamins and minerals from their bodies When asked for multivitamin recommendations, my answer will always vary between people. I believe in individualizing treatment as a naturopathic and functional medicine practitioner and will base my suggestions on my client’s specific biochemistry, history, symptoms, and lab work. There is no one-size-fits-all protocol that I adhere to for everyone.

Gently retraining off track thoroughbreds for new futures and placing them through thoughtful re-homing.

However, there are some general healthy lifestyle factors that I feel will benefit most people. These include: • • • • • • • •

eating whole, organic foods incorporating daily exercise or movement drinking lots of pure water laughing daily centering or meditating on a regular basis using therapeutic essential oils to neutralize toxins in the home participating in healthy, fulfilling relationships using non-toxic personal care products and household cleaners

A Talk with Dan Millman and Sierra Prasada, authors of ‘The Creative Compass’ How can The ‘Creative Compass’ help writers and artists who seek inspiration but struggle with self-doubt and inertia? In ‘The Creative Compass’, we set out to demystify the process of writing and creativity. That means overturning the expectation that great writers necessarily produce great first drafts. It also means accepting that the surge of inspiration we may feel on finishing a draft won’t last if it’s born up by the illusion that our writing must either be wonderful right now — or it won’t ever be. Instead, we find more fulfillment and success when we become aware of ourselves as passing through a cycle of five universal stages: Dream, Draft, Develop, Refine, and Share. Self-doubt becomes more manageable and inertia less overpowering, when we recognize drafting as an intermediate stage and understand that all writers learn to lower their expectations on the way to achieving greatness.

1

You write that something mysterious and important happens when we connect with “sticky ideas” – what are sticky ideas and why do they matter?

2

We all know how difficult it can be to come up with a good idea, but we also benefit from acknowledging that we can’t actually use many of our good ideas. What we’re really looking for are “sticky ideas,” notions, visions, or goals with which we deeply connect, ideas that take up residence in our imaginations. Every great story of invention has a sticky idea at its base. And every attic, basement, or computer hard drive holds a graveyard for merely good ideas that didn’t quite mean enough, so they never came to fruition. As you describe it, after writers dream up an idea and complete a draft, they need to develop and refine — what’s the difference? Isn’t it all just revising? It is all just revising, but the word “revise” tells us nothing specific. That’s probably why writing teachers often become exasperated when students seem attentive to pleas for “revision” — and then consistently fail to produce better work. In editing and screenwriting, however, we discovered a term and a way of working that reveals what many writers aren’t doing: in order to write better, we need to develop our work, the all-important third stage between drafting and refining.

Keep in touch as plans form. call Katrina: 518.583.3277, 518.332.6581 or email katrina@healingspringsjournal.com Development often requires new writing as well as editing and cutting. More specifically, it includes replacing weaker ideas with stronger ones; restructuring our latest drafts by shifting paragraphs or entire sections; and/or incorporating flashbacks and combining characters to streamline plot. In contrast, we use the word “refine” to describe those edits we make when it’s finally time to attend to syntax, grammar, and punctuation, to choose the right words in which to convey a story, or ideas, now thoroughly known.

Sierra, your first book profiled creative artists while you worked as a journalist in the Middle East – how did these experiences contribute to this book? I don’t think I could have written the same book had I not spent several years living in Lebanon and talking with artists there. The Middle East and the realm of creativity often strike newcomers as equally nebulous. We talk about both in semi-fantastical ways that promise to make each easier to understand but that are not particularly accurate, truthful, or useful to the firsttime traveler or inexperienced practitioner. In order to write about life overseas, I had to abandon myths about Arabs and the Arab world, and in order to write at all, I had to abandon myths about inspiration, talent, and voice. I’m glad that I was able to write about my experiences traveling and living abroad in this book, because they are so relevant to writing and creativity even though they are rarely presented in this light.

5

Dan, you describe learning to ride a unicycle a few years ago. What does unicycling have to do with writing? To cite a Zen proverb, “How we do anything is how we do everything.” Learning to ride a unicycle at age 60 has everything to do with writing, because it turned out to be what Sierra first named a “master metaphor.” Put simply, certain accomplishments can, somewhat mysteriously, transform our sense of who we are and what’s possible. When we draw upon this master metaphor in the midst of another challenge, we relate two experiences in a way that amplifies the probability that we’ll push through to success in new endeavors. I wasn’t sure why I felt compelled to learn to unicycle, and at first it felt impossible — two key elements of a master metaphor in the making. Sierra recognized her own master metaphor in living in the Middle East and learning to speak Arabic. Though we found these master metaphors at very different points of our lives and careers, they played a similar role: restoring our faith in our own ability to make progress and energizing our daily efforts. “The Creative Compass; Writing Your Way - from Inspiration to Publication” is published by New World Library and can be purchased at your favorite bookstore or online store. This book, written by father-daughter co-authors, reveals the five universal stages to creative mastery to guide you on the writer’s path. For writers, storytellers and other innovators, this book answers nearly any question you may have about the process. It will help you to: pursue ideas with which you strongly connect; learn what works best for you; overcome obstacles including doubt and anxiety; and appreciate drafts as layers leading to quality craft. #72 February—March, 2014 I Healing Springs 31
