Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you We are celebrating The Healing Springs Journal’s 12th birthday with this issue. That is a full cycle in Chinese Medicine. We started in the year of the horse and have now returned. As is always the case, I am humbled by your participation and give thanks. To mark the occasion, I pulled out a copy of the inaugural issue. In the Publisher’s Corner it said, “This is the beginning of a group journey. For the community it is a visit back to our roots. For me personally, it is an adventure in learning how to live life authentically.” I can’t help but wonder about our group journey and my individual adventure after 12 years have passed. Just 12 years ago, holistic healing was thought to be outside the mainstream. Today, it is filtering its way into the norm. Many, if not most, of the modalities are older than allopathic medicine by many years. While natural healing becomes common again, discernment is essential to recognizing false claims; like the use of the word ‘Natural’ on artificial foods or large corporations claiming to be local. Other than the falseness, there is nothing inherently wrong with these practices, but they do perpetuate a certain culture. The question is not are they good or bad, but do they support the change you want to see in the world? On this group journey there is so much available, let us sustain that which we believe in. The next question is; have I become the most authentic Katrina possible? For now, yes. Isn’t it true, that with each layer we peel off, there is another underneath? It’s not that I present myself as something greater than I am. More likely I would over-share the qualities I label as negative. Is identifying with my unfavorable traits really authentic? For example, after 12 years of successfully running a publication that has helped countless people, my take is that I merely facilitate a process that is happening beyond me. And while this is entirely true, are not my day-in-and-out efforts also part of the process? If so, it would be false not to claim my responsibility for that; which I rarely do. I was not born into this life with a lot of belief in my personal abilities. At the same time, I have always known and trusted my eternal being. Perhaps both of these sides are my authentic self, although one stems from personality and the other soul. Whichever one I nurture will determine my life’s experience. How authentic is your life? Do you follow what feels most true to you? Are you equally honest about your beneficial characteristics as your less valuable traits? Authenticity also includes acting in alignment with your values, personally and globally. In our competition driven society, photo by Deborah Neary it is tempting and perhaps habit to compare ourselves to others. However, this may be the number one exterminator of authenticity. To live genuinely is to discover what gives your life meaning by making you feel the most alive. Then to surround yourself with all that you love, regardless of what others do, think or say. May you, dear reader, find your joy and shine on. In Thanks,

Unofficial Results of the Albany Peace Project

During January 2014, between 370 and 400 people logged in each day to www.AlbanyPeaceProject.com to follow daily meditations that set intentions for greater peace in the city of Albany, NY. Researchers Dr. John Foldy, SUNY professor and author of The Primacy Model of Consciousness, and Bethany Gonyea, biofeedback specialist and director of NUMINOUS, reviewed Founder Lynn McGonagill will be teaching these extraordinary, crime statistics from the Albany Police Department to determine transformative classes. 2592 Western Avenue, Guilderland, NY (518) 357-4210 revealed that none of the violent crime indicators increased for January 2014, and in fact, there was indeed an overall 8% decrease in violent crime compared to January 2013. “There is much more statistical work to do, but these results are encouraging initial unofficial results for our first year with an average of a few hundred people participating.” reported Bethany Gonyea. The Albany Peace Project is a ten year research study that will be expanding each year as awareness grows. “The research suggests that there is a more robust result when more people are participating in such research, and when those participants are highly trained in meditation and focus.” To enhance these variables, NUMINOUS, the organization sponsoring The Albany Peace Project, will be offering free training to participants in the second half 2014 that will greatly enhance their ability to skillfully set peaceful intentions for the city of Albany and their own lives.” To help further this work, NUMINOUS, is already forming committees of volunteers to help raise awareness and participation for January 2015. There are approximately 1000 people in the network, but much more help is needed in four areas, 1) Promotion/ Marketing, 2) Technical Support, 3) Mobile Meditation Leaders, and 4) Fundraising. Seizures & Energy Medicine

by Ellen O'Connell f there is a doctor on board, please identify yourself to one of the flight attendants.” This was the second time the announcement had been made. No one had volunteered themselves in the interim, so a naturopath spoke up, knowing that her skills were not likely to be what was wanted.

“I

The flight attendant explained to her that a man was having a seizure in his seat, and help was urgently needed. She knew what to do, not from her naturopathic training, but because she was on the faculty of Donna Eden's Energy Medicine Program. She put one of her middle fingers in his navel, the other between his eyebrows, pushed in with both fingers and pulled up toward his head and held. In ten seconds the seizure was over. Several other energy medicine practitioners have used this technique to good effect in similar airport situations. They report that the most difficult part is explaining to a newly conscious person, why a stranger’s fingers are where they are. It sounds bizarre, but it is a way to reconnect the energy of the brain with the energy of the spinal cord, by using points on their corresponding acupuncture meridians. This procedure is called a hook-up, and is one of 8 “exercises” in Donna Eden's Daily Routine (a ten minute series of exercises to keep your fundamental energy systems clear.) In this case you do it for yourself, holding the points for at least a full minute, or until you experi-

ence a deeper breath or a sigh. Chronic thinkers may do better with the upper finger in the hollow at the base of the skull. (The navel can be held through a shirt.) Energy flow is habitual. A physical crisis is indicative of bad energetic habits. These can be retrained, by doing targeted exercises several times a day, for a period of weeks, just as if you are trying to develop muscle memory by practicing the techniques of a sport. For example, if you are troubled by seizures, try the hookup throughout the day, and especially when you feel one coming on. (Do not change any medication without a doctor's approval.) Here’s a fantastic example of what can happen when the hook-up is used habitually. A woman I met in my practitioner training classes runs a foster home. One young man that she cares for was averaging 12 grand mal seizures a day, despite his medication. She taught him how to do the hookup and encouraged him to do it throughout the day. This practice brought him down to about 3 grand mals a week. Everybody can use better brain to spinal cord communication. A Hook-up once a day can build this. Hooking-up more often can help heal damaged connections. Happy healing! Ellen O'Connell, Eden Energy Medicine Certified Practitioner (EEMCP), practices at The Garden, 434 Church St.,Saratoga Springs. She teaches Energy Medicine in Saratoga Springs and Ballston Spa. Questions are welcome at energybalance@nycap.rr.com.

In Sight of the

Divine

by Mary Sise ou would have to be living under a rock not to notice that something is happening on this planet. Everything is moving faster, days seem shorter, entire years just whiz on by. Have you noticed when you think of someone or something, it appears synchronistically? Scientists have been telling us that solar flares are bombarding the earth, the magnetic poles are shifting, and the planet now spins in the very center of the Milky Way galaxy. What’s going on?

Y

According to enlightened spiritual master Sai Maa, we are now in the time foretold by ancient traditions. Our planet is moving to a higher vibration, therefore each of us, as part of the planet, will also experience this. Sai Maa explains that there are two frequencies—love and fear— and that our planet is the only planet in our known universe designed this way. Earth was to be a “playground,” and like children in a play, we requested to experience the duality of fear and love. The only problem is that we got caught up in the play, with all our costumes and props, and forgot who we really are. This time of duality is over, and the planet and her inhabitants are releasing fear, anger and darkness to remember the truth. This is why we see such chaos in the world right now. Everything must be brought into alignment with the truth—no more being fake, cheating or lying. Mother Earth is shaking off all the anger and fear we have put into her.

The only choices we have now are whether to shift consciously, to resist or not, or to hold on to old limiting beliefs and suffering. Make no mistake— the planet is not ending, but birthing herself into a planet of love and light. Similar to a mother birthing a baby, we are in transition. Knowing this and doing everything possible to breathe, release our own fears, open our hearts and be with what is happening, will help us not freak out and believe that something is wrong or that God is punishing us for some transgression. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. To assist us, Sai Maa is returning to Albany on May 10, and offering a gifted program called Darshan. Darshan is a Sanskrit word that means “in the sight of the Divine.” It is more than a blessing; it is being seen fully, a recognizing from soul to soul of the divinity that is within you. It is a calling forth of that divinity and raising your vibration to a higher place of peace and joy— qualities already within you, just dormant. Similar to a candle flame placed near a fireplace, the fire expands and amplifies the light already there. Being “seen” by a living master is a powerful way to raise the vibration of your own being, and you serve by putting more love on the planet and supporting others to awaken to the light within them. Please bring your friends, loved ones and children to share this sacred experience. More information can be found at Sai-Maa.com/thepassiontour or by calling (518) 362-6136. Mary Sise LCSW, DCEP, is a social worker with a private practice in Latham, NY. She also serves as the Director for Sai Maa’s Transformational Healers Program. Visit MarySise.com.

Listening from the

Heart

by Cate LaBarre ecall a time when you felt heard, when your deepest thoughts and feelings were held reverently by another. Think of a time when you listened with all your heart and held a safe space for another to share openly. What was that like for you and the other person?

R

Listening is an art, something that can be learned, refined and practiced. There are different kinds of listening: conversational listening, active listening, passive listening and a deep form of listening from the heart. I had a reminder of the value of listening from the heart during a weekend retreat I facilitated in November. Participants shared how deeply moved they were by a powerful listening exercise. The group of 30 was paired for sharing periodically throughout the weekend. Sharing was timed for two minutes. Comments like “Wow, I realize how hard it is for me to listen without interrupting, nodding or making comments as my partner shared.” And “It felt great to be able to share for a specific amount of time and know that my partner would simply listen.” And even more “I realize how I don’t really listen anymore; I’m too busy with my own thoughts, getting annoyed or wanting approval, rehearsing what I’m going to say next.” With an intention to be conscious of the practice of listening from my heart, I’ve been listening to the silence in the winter woods, breathing in the stillness; listening to my clients, consciously connecting to what is said and what is not said; listening to my husband, focusing intently as he describes a work project; listening to my son, feeling his concern about “what’s next”; listening to a friend, sharing her excitement of an upcoming vacation; listening to the voice inside my head that is sometimes obnoxious and judgmental, other times compassionate and loving; listening to the whisper of my heart’s desire and honoring that voice. Listening from the heart means that I am willing to be open, present and compassionate, even when I notice I’m not really listening! Here are a few tips for listening from the heart:

• Be clear, ask about what the speaker wants from you as a listener • Concentrate on what’s being said “The quieter you become, the more you hear.” • Stay present even as you acknowledge distractions [usually 12 Healing Springs • #73 April—May, 2014 • 12th Birthday issue

internal] and refocus • Allow that the speaker is sharing from their personal truth • Be curious • Listen with an open mind, no right or wrong • Allow patience and notice if you want to interrupt • Notice if you rehearse how you want respond • Listen to the emotion of the speaker • Notice if what is shared causes you emotion • Listen to what is in the space and not said • Use open ended questions [what, where, who, how?] to gain clarity if a response is desired or needed With these steps, listening from the heart is also a pathway to get to know yourself better. Are you feeling some judgment, approval or just neutral? Do you stay focused or tune out? Do you want to give advice or fix the problem? Do you get angry or experience emotion? What do you make it mean that you might be a “good” or “bad” listener in any given circumstance? Maybe it’s just not a good time or the place to listen! In a conversation with a support group recently, one woman shared that she was just plain sick and tired of listening. It seemed like all she did was listen to the problems of her friends and family. Sometimes in an effort to be loving and caring, to listen from the heart, we forget an important rule of all good relationships – maintaining healthy boundaries. If it is simply not a good time for you to listen, say so. If you don’t want your best friend calling you in the middle of the night, be honest and say no. Listen when you can create a space to be present.

Sometimes simply listening is all we need to do. When we listen from the heart, we see life through another’s eyes, hear with their ears and experience their pain or joy. Listening from the heart, staying curious, accepting and silent until a response is desired or needed, if it is at all, allows the other person to share at the deepest level. No right or wrong, no good or bad, simply a flow of love, willingness and understanding. Listening from the heart allows us experience what it feels like to be in another’s shoes. As Atticus Finch says in To Kill a Mockingbird: If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view…until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it. Maybe all it takes is listening from the heart. As a life coach and “designated listener” Cate LaBarre supports creative women who are seeking to reach increasingly higher levels of inspiration, fulfillment and joy. She is a Certified Integrative Coach, trained workshop leader, NYS Licensed Massage Therapist, Reiki Master and writer. She received her coaching training and certification with The Ford Institute of Integrative Coaching at JFK University. Blog: http://CateLaBarre.com Contact: catelabarre@gmail.com or 518-882-9880.

Listening from the heart is a gift we give to the speaker. There’s an old proverb that states: A problem shared is a problem halved. #73 April—May, 2014 • 12th Birthday issue • Healing Springs

Much of the woundedness we carry comes from not being really seen or noticed as children at critical times by others who mattered, whether intentionally or unintentionally.

To simply see and bring loving presence to our personal truth whatever it is, is the greatest gift we can offer ourselves or others. Seeing is different from knowing. We can tell the story of what happened without feeling. We can know what happened without truly understanding what the experiencer went through. This is a useful and important defense. It protects us from emotional

chaos But to be whole and fully human we need, when the time is right, to make ourselves available to what we have felt and experienced as deeply disturbing We need to see , and be seen, whether it is alone, with a family member, a friend, in a group, or in therapy. I journey to my underworld to meet a wounded part of myself. It is like a dream. I travel through putrid shadows to the place where she resides. The stench and the slime make me recoil. I don't want any part of this scene. I come to a clearing where she sits, wretched, in rags and chains, dirty. My distaste is reflected in her reticence to meet my eyes. My guide looks deeply into my eyes, and after some moments an understanding emerges that what is needed is for me to to be willing to really see this wretched part of myself. I allow my eyes to rest on her. I soften my gaze and connect with my heart. As I do so she allows her averted gaze to meet mine and we look deeply into each others eyes. I see the story of her hurts and betrayals, her hopelessness and despair. My heart responds with compassion to the shame and unworthiness that she communicates in her bent head and slumped shoulders. As my gaze remains with this wounded part it becomes translucent. The cluster of memories it embodies become a trace and the trace melts into a mist that I beckon and welcome into my heart. An EMDR client accesses an image of a younger self struggling with fear and need for acceptance. As they explore the image they feel the emotional atmosphere of the belief they formed at that time, of being a misfit, that they do not belong. They notice how that belief fills their belly with dread. As they stay with the image, their belief, the sensations in their belly, a response gathers in their current selves, a strong nurturing protective desire to

Career Where Choice Dreams Become a Reality go in and reassure that younger self that they are O.K. In that response the younger self feels seen and tears flow. Another client tracks his embodied experience of dissatisfaction in the Hakomi way. He feels mental fogginess as a pressure in his forehead. Out of these sensations emerge images of himself as a young boy. He hears a voice saying: “you should have....” Tears well up as he says: “I'm not enough, it is never enough.” I encourage him to look at this younger self through loving eyes. Eventually he quietens and I invite him to notice what he experiences as I say: “You are enough, exactly as you are.” He says: “I need to hear that. I can feel myself relax. My head is clearing.” In Avatar the young human must be taught to “see” what is without, and what is within. As he learns he comes to honor the sacredness of all life. I invite you to take a moment here and there to open your eyes to what is around you, and what is within yourself. How to Tame

Heartburn

Naturally by Sarah LoBisco, ND eartburn, a common term for acid reflux, is used to describe a burning sensation felt in the upper chest, just behind the breastbone. Approximately 20% of the adult population is familiar with this uncozy feeling. It most often occurs after a meal and worsens when lying down or bending over. Heartburn is considered “normal” if it occurs two times a week or less. However, when this unwelcome sensation becomes more frequent, inflammation in the esophagus lining or in the stomach can result in a diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

H

The cause of acid reflux is thought to be from excessive stomach acid in our belly, hydrochloric acid (HCL) to be exact. It results when the lower esophageal sphincter, a circular band of musculature between your esophagus and stomach, abnormally relaxes or weakens. This causes stomach acid to flow back up into your esophagus verses into the small intestine, which is meant to cue the next phase of digestion. Conventionally, the treatment is suppressing the stomach’s acid production by prescribing histamine-2 antagonists or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These drugs work by slowing down or preventing the formation of HCL. So, you may be thinking, "inflammation stopped, heartburn gone, end of story, right?" Not quite. Blocking the body’s enzymatic pathway in digestion can have consequences. HCL is secreted for a variety of purposes such as: the breakdown of proteins in the stomach, maintenance of proper microorganism ratio (including H.pylori), and the assimilation of vitamins and minerals. Furthermore, overproduction of stomach acid is not the only cause of heartburn, other causes should be ruled out such as a hiatal hernia or too little stomach acid.

You read that right- heartburn or reflux can be caused by too little HCL. Here’s how: • HCL kills pathogen overgrowth in your stomach, such as H Pylori. Without this anti-septic pH property, fermentaHealing Springs • #73 April—May, 2014 • 12th Birthday issue

tion byproducts from microbial overgrowth can result in the stomach or small intestine. This can lead to gas and irritation, which can mimic “heartburn.” • The esophageal and pyloric sphincters are triggered by acidity. If there is not enough acid, the esophageal valve relaxes or the pyloric valve will not open, and contents are regurgitated back up the esophagus. Furthermore, a concern with the long-term use of PPIs is their association with increased fracture risk and chronic infections. Also, if one’s stomach acid gets too low, decreased absorption of calcium, iron, magnesium, vitamin B12, and vitamin C can occur. Low calcium can perpetuate weakening of the bones and can lead to other issues, such as in a Vitamin D deficiency. Finally, without the digestive support of HCL, one will have a hard time breaking down proteins as well and assimilating them. Proteins are needed to rebuild vital tissues, balance metabolism and blood sugar, assist in the formation of neurotransmitters, and are the building blocks of important cell signaling molecules. They are therefore vital for overall wellness and vitality.

So, would it be best to bypass these complications with calcium carbonate supplements? Unfortunately, these chewy tummy tamers may be creating an imbalance in the calcium and phosphorus ratio in your body, which prevents bone matrix mineralization. This can also create skeletal issues. So, what to do if you feel the chest-burn? Here are some natural tools and tips for your wellness toolkit if you feel you need digestive support.

Slow down when you eat.

If you are stressed, your body’s nervous system will be too heightened to enter into rest and digest mode. This alarm stage prevents the formation of digestive enzymes.

Avoid drinking while you eat, unless its warm water with ginger or herbal tea. Otherwise, you’ll dilute your body’s enzymatic release.

Essential oils such as ginger and peppermint can alleviate symptoms of indigestion and help treat the cause at the same time. These oils support the secretion of enzymes for digestive

health. Some of my essential oil clients have said lemon water has also trumped their heartburn. Perhaps it’s by balancing the pH and its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory effects?.

If these tools don’t work or you are getting frequent heartburn, you may want to investigate further. You can request the following tests from your doctor. This is in order to address the root cause and prevent the complication of too little or too much stomach acid: • H. pylori antibody test • A stomach acidity measurement • Breathe test or functional markers such as the Oragnix acid panel. These tests can help rule out small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. (A comprehensive Organix panel can also determine nutrient deficiencies, among other benefits). • Determine if food sensitivities are triggering inflammatory processes and digestive distress leading to heartburn. You can do this by requesting an IgG test (not available in NYS) or ALCAT test. You can also test for gluten issues with a celiac panel. Another option is to use a lifestyle approach to assessing for food triggers by doing an elimination diet with your healthcare provider. • A comprehensive gastrointestinal health workup by a specialist or additional workup to rule out a cardiovascular origin if these tests don’t reveal a cause. The good news is, once you know the cause, steps can be taken to ensure your digestive tract is back in healthy harmony.

TAROT Is A Gift Available To Everyone

by Joan Scannell here is a certain allure surrounding Tarot cards that is both mystifying and intimidating. People often misunderstand what Tarot cards are and what they are here to do.

T

Modern-day Tarot originated from an Italian-based deck of cards called tarocco. The original intent of Tarot cards was to provide people with a source of entertainment through card games and tricks. However, by the 18th century, Tarot had morphed into a spiritual tool of divination. It is at this point that many of the mystical and esoteric concepts of Tarot were forged. Short and sweet, Tarot cards are a divine gift available to anyone who seeks assistance on their path to Authenticity. The major arcana begins with the Fool, an innocent, energetic and hopeful being, and ends with the World, the successful accomplishment of our earthly desires and lessons. Tarot guides the soul through its earth-bound, spiritual journey. Tarot lets you know what you are doing right according to your soul’s purpose, and what you are doing wrong. What is really nice about Tarot is that it explains what is going wrong and offers you suggestions to get you back on the right path. Tarot is meant to empower and guide you. Unfortunately, Tarot has gotten a bad rap over time from people who don’t understand it or from people who purposefully misuse it for their own gain.

One major misperception of Tarot is that it is the “Devil’s tool.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Tarot cards are gifts to us from the Divine that allow us another method with which to connect with our higher selves. The messages they give are meant to help the individuals reconnect with their Authentic Selves. Ultimately, the querent (the individual receiving the reading) has complete control over whether or not she or he will follow any given advice. Another misperception is that Tarot readers only tell you ‘bad’ or ‘good’ things to keep you coming back to them. Any reader who misuses Tarot to manipulate another person is just an under-handed individual. Period. A reputable Tarot reader will never tell you that you have a “curse” on you. They will never ask you for money to remove this curse or issue warnings of dire consequences if you don’t follow their advice. Conversely, a reputable

Tarot card reader won’t always paint a picture of wine and roses where none exists. Yes, you may be going through a wonderful season in your life where things are indeed rosy and you get a reading with a lot of good news in it. However, those completely positive readings are quite rare. Instead, the reputable reader will deliver the positive and the not-so-positive during a reading. When delivering the challenging information, the reputable reader will offer suggestions for empowerment from the Universe. Finally, one of the most popular misconceptions is that one must be psychic to read Tarot cards. While possessing intuitive skills enhances the depth and quality of a reading, anyone can learn how to read. A good analogy would be to compare learning Tarot with learning how to paint. Everyone having been taught the technical aspects of painting can create a decent picture. However, to go to higher levels of ability, one must steadily apply oneself. For instance to create a skilled artistic design, one must practice their acquired skills regularly. To advance to the creation of a breathtaking portrait, one must combine those skills with natural talent.

The same is true with learning to read Tarot. It is an art form accessible to anyone who would like to learn it. And, like any art, there are steps to learning Tarot. There are certain instructional components that need to be learned in order to understand the cards. After these components are learned, practice and advance study help the individual reach the next level of their ability to interpret the cards. When these skills are combined with a devel10:08 PM oped intuition, the process of reading and understanding Tarot cards suddenly becomes demystified and much less intimidating. As a result, the reader is able to help others create the beautiful masterpiece we often call Life. Joan Scannell is a local Tarot Reader and Educator with more than 20 years of experience. The

Wisdom

of

Self Care by Mary Beth McCue mericans are becoming more aware of how lifestyle choices and practice of self-care can impact their overall health, quality and course of their lives. This awareness has grown out of the results of many recent discoveries. Results from the Human Genome Project (HGP), the worlds’ largest collaborative biological research project, helped set the stage for defining healthy living practices. Started in 1990 and supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institute of Health, it was completed two years ahead of schedule and gathered valuable evidence proving that lifestyle choices, not genes, chiefly influence current and future state(s) of health. It proved areas such as diet, movement, and stress management had more than an 80% impact on current and future health.

A

Integrative and holistic health practitioners focus on treating the whole person, and therefore serve as a valuable component in teaching healthy lifestyles and self-care, and encouraging the discovery of life’s purpose. Their ongoing training and education is derived from evidence-based research. Consequently, they serve as a complement to conventional health care and are becoming, more increasingly, a common member of an individual’s health care team. Integrative (and Functional) Medicine (IM) is not new medicine. It is a return to the original practice and philosophy of medicine. It emphasizes unique individual needs, the whole-body systems approach, and relationship between practitioner and patient/client. IM practitioners practice personalized medicine. They employ the innate healing ability of the body, and may address numerous aspects of an individual's life to attain optimal health and avoid years of chronic illness. Clinical research studies prove complementary therapies, used either independently or in conjunction with conventional care, are paramount in healing illness, fostering wellness and saving massive amounts of healthcare dollars. Common “Illness” may range from depression and ADD to chronic fatigue, diabetes, gastric disorders, neurological issues, certain cancers and much more. In 1999 I was diagnosed with more than 15 medical conditions that were not discovered by traditional means, but by physicins in Functional Medicine. Today I am essentially symptomfree, and have used my own experience to propel my career focus to the discipline and specialty of Integrative and Functional Medicine as a dietitian and nutritionist. Through (ongoing) extensive education and training, I have helped many achieve vital health andto heal common chronic illness by solving the root cause of conditions. The Wisdom of Self Care; A Wellness Symposium on Whole Health and Purpose with the goal to educate and empower individuals to make the best choices for their unique lifestyle vision and healthcare needs. Clearing Trauma with Healing from the Body Level UpTM (HBLUTM) by Judith A. Swack, Ph.D. anet’s husband committed suicide while at a business conference. Janet’s pain was so intolerable she started drinking every day, and could not sleep without medication. Had he been drinking? Was the company covering something up? Had he said anything to her in their phone calls that should have alerted her to his state of mind? After a few months, her well meaning friends and family members encouraged her to “let go and move on.” After all, she was still young and had her whole life ahead of her. They were certain she would marry again.

J

A year later, Janet came to me for treatment of her loss, but was afraid to let go of the trauma for fear of losing her husband forever. This is what I call the great trauma rip-off. When people are traumatized, they can only remember the traumatic circumstances around the tragic event, not the positive experiences that they had with that person before his/her death. How does this happen? Phobias and traumas are irrational and exaggerated reactions caused by shocking experiences that trigger the fight/flight/ freeze reflex. Anything that was in the environment at the time becomes associated with the traumatic memory. Later, encountering anything that reminds you (even unconsciously) of the original event triggers a "body flashback" to the original memory causing a phobic reaction.

Healing Springs Expo is in planning stage If things go as envisioned, this fall event will include an array of HEALING modalaties and workshops in an outdoor setting. Sadly, Janet felt traumatized every time she remembered her husband. She kept imagining him dead in that hotel room and could only feel grief and pain. In essence her husband had become a trauma, and although she was in pain she was afraid that letting go of the trauma meant losing her husband. I told Janet that only when she cleared the trauma would she be able to hold on to and keep the positive memories and feelings associated with her husband and to experience gratitude for the wonderful contributions he had made to her life. Only after she cleared the trauma would she be able to finish grieving and feel his loving presence. Janet agreed to do the Healing from the Body Level Up (HBLU) process for clearing trauma. Since a phobic reaction is a body reflex and can’t be controlled consciously we principally used the Natural Bio-Destressing (NBD) technique to activate the body’s calming reflex, thus neutralizing the phobic reaction. In NBD, people focus on the emotional reaction they would like to clear and activate the calming reflex by stimulating specific nerve endings (by tapping with fingertips) on the face, torso, and hands combined with left brain/right brain integration techniques.

Whether loss trauma occurred less than a year or more than 60 years ago, my clients and I have found that the memory of their loved ones is tainted by trauma unless we use the right techniques to clear it completely at the body, unconscious, conscious, and soul levels. Healing trauma at all levels allows people to easily recall special memories of loving connection and appreciate the ways in which their lives were enriched by having known that person. If you or anyone you know would like to recover from trauma and create satisfying relationships, HBLU methodology can help you. Dr. Swack and her associates work in person, by phone, or by skype. To learn more or schedule an appointment, please call 781-444-6940, email info@hblu.org, or go to www.HBLU.org.

The ideas we hear and read are fantastic and without a doubt inspiring. The work, though, is taking what you hear or read from theory to practice. My students often ask me how they can put spiritual principles and teachings to work in their lives. They like what they’ve read or heard and understand it intellectually, but they find it extremely challenging to put it into practice consistently in such a way that they see results and it becomes woven solidly into the fabric of their lives. I love languages and have studied several. I had wanted for years to learn Italian. There are a plethora of resources available in the library and online to do this. The fact was, though, that I didn’t learn Italian until last year when I set foot into an Italian classroom and committed myself to a year of study. The classroom structure afforded me set appointments for learning, an amazingly creative, engaging professor, and assignments for which I was accountable...e adesso io posso parlare italiano. Classes are a critical part of being able to use the wisdom we hear and to integrate spiritual principles into our lives so that they make a difference in our way of being. In class, a person actively engages with the principles on a consistent basis. In addition, there is power in numbers. Engaging in the study of spiritual wisdom–whatever type resonates with you–in a group setting helps you explore the concepts more deeply, understand them in new ways, and brainstorm a plan for how to apply that wisdom in your life. Being in a group, too, helps to keep you accountable. You commit to being present at a certain time and date to do the work together. You report on your progress, celebrate each other’s experiences, and support each other in challenging situations.

If we want to see changes in our lives, we’ve got to devote time and work to make them happen. Author Pam Grout sees a lack of belief as a roadblock, too. In her latest book, E-Squared: Nine Do-It Yourself Energy Experiments That Prove Your Thoughts Create Your Reality, she writes, “If you’ve read The Secret or been in metaphysical, spiritual circles for any time at all, you already know your thoughts create your reality, that there’s a power in the universe that can heal, and that you and you alone design your own life. Unfortunately, there’s still this tiny little problem...You don’t really believe it. Not fully.” Grout wrote her book to help people solidify their belief and be the best that they can be. How Stress Taxes Health

and Ways to Cope by Cheryl Wong, ND, LAc ax season is upon us once again. As always, its partner in crime, stress, comes out and wreaks havoc on our health and wellbeing in a multitude of ways. Often during this time, our other sources of stress become amplified. Whether you’re a caregiver, a student, your financial burden feels unbearable, or your relationships are strained, stress will affect your nervous, cardiovascular, digestive, and immune systems, to name a few. The bad news is that stress will always be a part of our lives in the modern world in some form or another. The good news is there are ways to limit stress and mitigate its effects on our health and our lives.

T

Stress and the

Nervous System

The first system to respond to stress is the nervous system. When we experience stress, the sympathetic nervous system tells your pupils to dilate, your blood vessels to constrict, your heart to pump more blood, and inhibits the parasympathetic nervous system. A healthy parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for digesting and absorbing food, appropriate appetite, regular bowel movements and even good sexual performance. With unmanageable stress, the parasympathetic nervous system is overwhelmed and cannot function optimally. The sympathetic nervous system also activates the sympathoadrenal pathway and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis indirectly through cortisol. Over time, continued stimulation to these pathways taxes the adrenal glands’ ability to secrete cortisol, without which you won’t be able to handle stress as well. Furthermore, improper activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis affects other parts of the hypothalamic pituitary axis resulting in endocrine dysfunction, like irregular periods, poor sleep, and increased blood sugar. The inability to manage stress can cause and/or exacerbate depression and anxiety. Indeed, there are many more studied mechanisms on how stress affects the nervous system. Thus, the effects of stress can get on our nerves, to say the least.

Stress and the

Cardiovascular System

endothelial dysfunction, a major precursor to atherosclerosis or increased plaque formation. In addition, sustained mental stress causes the release of catecholamines, which result in increased blood pressure and elevated heart rate. Psychological stress also contributes to obesity, another risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular disease. These effects together, increase the likelihood of stroke, heart attack, or another thrombotic event such as a pulmonary embolism.

Stress and the

Digestive System

As mentioned above, when the parasympathetic nervous system is inhibited, the digestive tract shuts down causing irregular bowel movements, constipation, digestive upset, and even peptic ulcers, irritable bowel disorder, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Besides shutting down the digestive system, stress harms digestion in other ways. End products of an imbalanced hypothalamic pituitary axis cause the down regulation of protein immune complexes that are important for maintaining the integrity of the intestinal wall. They help protect against the adhesion of pathogenic microbes, regulate inflammation and keep the intestinal wall intact. Without them, the intestinal wall becomes more permeable to microbes and allergens increasing the possibility of food sensitivity. So even if you were stresscraving cake, you couldn’t have your cake and eat it too!

Stress and the

Immune System

Stress weakens the immune system in a variety of ways. Stress triggers the release of cytokines and chemokines, chemicals that cause increased inflammation. When these chemicals are released consistently and inappropriately, your immune system can become hyperactive and your susceptibility to environmental allergies increases. On the other side of the spectrum, stress also causes an increasing amount of cortisol in the bloodstream, which suppresses the immune system. In this scenario, when you’re exposed to pathogens under stress, it becomes harder for the immune system to combat microbes, and you’re more susceptible to getting sick. There is even some correlation between extreme chronic stress and increased incidence of cancer. During stress, tumor suppressive genes are down regulated and biochemicals released during psychological stress promotes tumor growth.

One way in which stress affects the cardiovascular system has already been mentioned. Consistently increased blood sugar will lead to diabetes, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Stress also causes platelet activation and hypercoagulability. There is also evidence that stress alone increases inflammation with or without the presence of depression, a risk factor for hypertension. We know that inflammation is associated with There are a variety of ways to cope with stress and prevent their 28 Healing Springs • #73 April—May, 2014 • 12th Birthday issue

The very first thing to do is find ways to limit your stress, whether it means asking for help from others, taking a lighter credit load, or rearranging your schedule, it’s important to recognize that stress exists and that you have options. Often, working with a counselor can help explore those options with you and discover healthy coping mechanisms for present stress or the lingering effects of past stressful events. Studies show that getting aerobic exercise, and resistance training can also help decrease inflammation caused by stress. It is sometimes difficult to be as active during these cold months of winter, but you can also manage stress by engaging in breathing exercises and meditation. For those who are interested in movement that’s linked to mindful breathing, yoga, tai chi, and qi gong are excellent ways to center oneself. Often we need a little more support on top of what we can do individually. Besides working with a counselor, getting regular massages or acupuncture can help decrease the effects of stress. Massage will decrease muscular tension. Acupuncture will decrease tension, inflammation, and regulate imbalances in the body. There are also herbs and supplements that can help with decreasing anxiety, getting sound sleep, and improving energy, which are all necessary for handling stress. But most of all, stress can be conquered by laughter. Studies show that laughter can reduce psychological and cardiovascular stress, improve lung and heart function, and decrease blood sugar. So laugh in the face of filing your taxes this year. Your health may depend on it!

"Cherish your vision, cherish your ideals. Cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts, for out of them will grow all delightful conditions, all heavenly environment; of these, if you but remain true to them, your world will at last be built.” – James Allen

"If we were not so single-minded about keeping our lives moving, and for once could do nothing, perhaps a huge silence might interrupt this sadness of never understanding ourselves and of threatening ourselves with death." –

Pablo Neruda

"Those who contemplate the beauty of the Earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is a symbolic as well as actual beauty in the migration of birds, the ebb and flow of tides, the folded bud ready for spring. How Being in a Rush Creates Anxiety in Some Animals by Danielle Tremblay uring a recent animal communciation session, a client asked her horse how he felt about the bodyworker he’d recently experienced. The horse commented that the person themself had been ‘ok’ but that their was ‘rushing energy’ involved that the horse did not care for at all.

He explained that having this person rush (hurry) around his physical body was disconcerting because such energy to him felt like the energy of ‘fight or flight’. The owner commented that the bodyworker had arrived late to their appointment. This horse explained that the ‘fight or flight energy’ (which is what a personhurrying feels like to him) makes things feel like there is an emergency situation to consider. Potential emergency situations make him nervous because it’s not calm energy. It’s rather unsettling. While this particular horse didn’t show any extreme outward signs of being nervous because he’s a confidant well-balanced to begin with, some more sensitive animals may have reacted poorly. Some animals may have responded to the body worker by pacing, moving away, fleeing, being tense in their body, may have emitted warning signs to keep back. When asked what he would recommend to people, this horse says to simply stop rushing. Instead, take deep breaths and settle your energy down (calm it) and proceed slowly while paying attention to what you’re doing. ‘Bodies need to be loved, not dismissed by rushing around them’ he adds. Understand that how we humans approach a situation (with calmness vs. turmoil or worry) can influence the behavior and cooperation of many pets. If we help them feel safe in their world by emitting calm emotionally energy ourselves, we can often get things that need to be done in a timely manner completed more smoothly. P

I'm almost 50 years old, and my exercise involves a lot of running. Past injuries and the aches and pains of aging are starting to catch up with me. I'd hate to have to give up running and was wondering about alternative medicine for sports injuries or enhancing performance?

Oriental Medicine; Gregg St Clair

Acupuncture is a wonderful treatment for athletes and sports medicine is one of my favorite areas to work with. In addition to acupuncture I’m a certified personal trainer and use medical qi gong as physical therapy. I was lucky enough to study with Matt Callison who is one of the premier acupuncture sports medicine practitioners in the country and I worked on needling techniques and anatomy taught in his cadaver labs plus private study with his ortho/neuro techniques. My observation in general is that between 40 and 50 is when things start to change and we can’t do what we used to. I have a 48 year old coming in with knee problems that doesn’t want to give up what’s probably the worst sport for the knees- basketball. I have a 52 year old been playing hockey his whole life but now on the verge of hanging up his skates. What I see the most though are runners, especially runners about you age that run races such as marathons or triathlons. Many are addicted to the activity and don’t want to give it up. I hear a lot of excuses from people who don’t like to exercise about why they can’t, but for those that enjoy a sport, they always find a way. You say the past is catching up to you and you don’t want to give up running. That’s fine, but you might have to look at modifying how you run. There is a reason there are different age groups in some competitive sports, as we get older we slow down and recuperate slower. Consider shorter distances and more time in between runs. Acupuncture creates a healing response wherever I needle. For sports injury it can replace cortisone shots to reduce inflammation, it relaxes muscles and releases endorphins to reduce pain. In addition, not only can it help injury, it can actually enhance performance and I have people come to me often as part of their preparation for a run or race. I’ve worked with Olympic athletes and some of the New York Giants when they come up to the Albany area for pre-season practice. Of course the bulk of my sports medicine practice is working with regular weekend warriors. What I like about working with athletes is that they are motivated to get better. Other people I have to argue to get them to drink water, athletes are always ready to do the work. Athletes do get hurt; they just need to have the proper tools to keep them up and running.

My name is Mona and I am a friendly and out-going bulldog mix. I’ve learned to be a real charmer and am an easy to please dog.

My name is Walter. Do you like my fancy tuxedo? I will show it off to you. I am a big, handsome boy, who is very versatile, I can be a lap-cat, or a lap-cat, or even a lap-cat. I love face rubs so much that I will climb on your shoulders to rub my face on yours. Won't you bring me home today?
