Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you In a recent conversation about a child’s education, I briefly stated how important it is to encourage creative expression in children rather than competition. It was not a well-thought-out statement at the time, but it brought a flood of thoughts afterwards. What became clear was that creativity is not only about the arts, but also the way we think and how we live. Creativity allows us to be more adept at problem solving, building a business, articulating emotions and even sports. While competition tends to foster comparing ourselves to others and separating those who win from those who lose, true expression focuses on our personal experience and authentically sharing that with the world. I do not believe competition is inherently bad, but in my opinion it is best approached as a journey of self rather than proof of how good or bad we are. It seems that if we emphasized expression to the young, they would more likely approach competition this way in the long run. It might be noted that my competitive drive is very strong. So much so, I shy away from competition as it brings out facets of myself I’d rather not nurture. Meanwhile, making music or dancing, brings out great amounts of love for life. My soul is satisfied so long as I lose myself (read ego) to the music. Meanwhile, when there is the potential of winning or losing getting ‘lost’ seems too large a task for me. That said, others such as tennis player Roger Federer seem brilliant at using sport as their canvas. Throughout my life there have been times when my heart hurts so much it is overwhelming. The pain has hit at times of great loss; a breakup, the death of a dog, not getting the part I wanted in a play, or whatever…. Other times the sadness was brought on by no outward circumstance at all. This morning I was flooded with this latter kind of deep feeling. I have done enough self-development to know that ignoring these spells—and I use that word purposely—is futile. For 1. There is nothing wrong with feeling deeply regardless of our society’s distaste for it. 2. Outrunning an internal experience rarely works for the long run. 3. Intellectualizing emotions actually pushes them deeper and they can come out inappropriately. 4. Discomfort of this kind is usually the first sign of a major wake-up, and in this day and age we need to wake up regardless if it’s painful. So, I walked into the woods along with my dog Z and my sadness. Deep in, I sat down among the hemlocks in the arms of my beloved sun. At first I just sat and allowed the sensation of silence to wash over and through me. Then, not knowing what else to do, I spoke out loud saying “Greetings Mother Earth and Sibling Trees. I have come to you in sorrow, its source I cannot discern. I come to you now to ask for help in healing this wound regardless of its origin. If instead of needing healing it has a message, please then help me to hear.“ Now I hope not to lose anyone with this, but I received the following response; “Katrina, thank you for honoring us with your truth and asking for our help. We are always hoping to be heard and used for our wisdom not only our bodies. What you are feeling is an excess of emotions. You are labeling it as sadness because it has overwhelmed you, but it is not exclusively that. In addition, not all of what you are feeling is yours, some of it is ancestral and some universal. Avoid the temptation to run for cover, and allow these emotions to take place just as you would a thunderstorm. You don’t try to stop a storm, instead you watch it move through

knowing it will end, the sun will shine and all that remains will thrive because of the rain. This is not about banishing these emotions forever, for just as storms will come again so too will feelings. However, by healing and releasing them now they will not become stagnant and interrupt your life flow unknowingly. Allow what will happen to happen as it will. That is the way of nature; and you, my dear, are nature. Sometimes the strongest tree falls, yet the forest remains. Any death will be shocking at first but frankly what grows lives what doesn’t dies. It’s very simple, yet humans tend to crowd it with preferences and judgments, while clinging to neverending goals that they believe will satisfy their true longing for peace and love. Emotions are a blessing of the human experience, yet they are not necessarily connected to truth and will often muddle your perception. Be mindful of that as you move with your flow, accepting all that it brings. Don’t get fooled in to believing that you will feel only joy and bliss if you are on your path. Being vulnerable to pain is an indication you are open, free and natural—which is true strength. We thank you for being courageous, authentic and honest. Continue your balanced dance with paradox, knowing that you are the only person in charge of your story. You have been given the gift of life, use it wisely.” With that there was silence again. Deep within there was a true sense of belonging to this world. After sitting in the quiet for a spell, I remembered again the thoughts about personal expression and saw that at its core there has to be this sense of belonging. Hence, I add the importance of being with nature or whatever makes you feel the strongest connection to the world. From there it is possible to fearlessly express yourself creatively in whatever way most fulfilling—writing, caring for animals, making films, teaching or whatever. As Howard Thurman put it “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” There is no need to prove that we belong by creating outer success or receiving the approval of others, although both may come naturally. The simple fact that we have life coursing through our hearts has already proven our inclusion and value. From that place of worthiness, everything we choose to do with our life is simply a way of honoring the gift. Perhaps in the end, that is all I mean by creative expression—articulating the life that animates what would otherwise be just a pile of bones. So I end with a question in the words of Mary Oliver, ‘What will you do with this one precious life?’ No matter your answer, may photo by Deborah Neary it be sourced by the song that is yours alone.

PS. The Healing Springs Expo will be a great opportunity to be with nature, see page 39.

Fermented

Foods

What are they & why are they good for our health? by Kathryn Kos ur ancestors knew the secret to properly prepare foods and make them easier to digest. Many traditionally prepared foods were fermented. The process of fermentation leaves the food full of probiotics and digestive enzymes to help with digestion. “Probiotics” is a popular health buzz-word, but what exactly are probiotics? Probiotics are microorganisms and yeast that help to digest and break down foods. Enzymes break down large proteins, starch, and fat molecules in food into smaller molecules during digestion.

O

The best foundation for health is fully digesting and assimilating nutrients from our food. Our gut contains 70-80% of our immune system. A healthy immune system requires healthy digestion. Most of us are not properly digesting the foods we consume

because of many factors (poor diet, poor quality fats, low fat, low stomach acid, and stress to name a few). Did you know that you must be in a parasympathetic (relaxed) state to properly digest food? That means trying to eat when stressed or rushed also affects digestion. By not fully digesting our foods, we start to develop issues such as heartburn, acid reflux, indigestion, bloating, gas, etc. Other issues can occur such as leaky gut (large proteins passing through junctions in the gut into the blood stream), which can lead to inflammation in the body and a host of other health conditions that many attribute to aging. There are many ways in which we can heal our digestion. One of the easy things you can do to help your body pre-digest foods is to consume fermented foods with your meals. A tablespoon or 2 of traditionally prepared sauerkraut with a meal makes a big impact on digestion. Fermented foods contain billions of live enzymes to help predigest food. Fully digested food ensures you are getting more bioavailable nutrients from the food, helps to break down difficult proteins that otherwise may pass through the gut and create inflammatory processes and autoimmune issues. Typical diets today do not contain these beneficial enzymes and bacteria. We aren’t receiving these health benefits if we aren’t consuming fermented foods!

What are some examples of fermented foods? Kombucha tea: Kombucha tea is fermented tea. It is made with a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast), aka “mother” Ancient Chinese called kombucha the “Immortal Health Elixir” It’s been around for more than 2,000 years and has a rich

Caregivers

Not Getting

CARE by Barbara Stevens aregiver, definition; “an individual (spouse, partner, family member, friend, or neighbor) or professional, involved in assisting others with activities of daily living and/or medical tasks. Rosalynn Carter said: “There are only four kinds of people in this world; those who have been caregivers; those who currently are caregivers; those who will be caregivers; and those who will need caregivers.”

C

Where are you in that cycle right now? And who is taking care of the caregiver? It is a challenging role to assume. When my parent’s health and wellbeing were in decline, it wasn’t easy being 300 miles away. My sister, who lived much closer, assumed most of the daily and weekly tasks, doctors’ appointments, making sure they ate, were safe when they were out, were taking their meds, and making holiday dinners. I supported her the best I could from a distance, and made time to “go home” so she could have some down time.

Healing Springs I #75 August—September 2014

A few years later, I found myself involved with the same issues with my in-laws, who lived local to me.Now it was my turn to take on the role of decisions:Are they safe when they drive? Are they eating properly? How will they get to doctor’s appointment?Who will be with them in those appointments to make sure the information is understood? Every time the phone rang, there was a rush of adrenaline, “what’s happened now?”I knew that cascade of adrenaline could affect other areas of my life, if I let it. My reaction to a co-worker, client, or a family member, could be inappropriate if I didn’t take time to readjust my state of mind. That adrenaline rush, what the body thinks is a call to survive an attack, can create more problems if we don’t take time to realize that this is not mortal danger. Between the demanding job, and family responsibilities, there’s not a lot of time for self-care.It has to be a conscious decision, “if I don’t take care of myself, I’m not going to be much good to anyone else”.

Learning to ask for help, taking time out and not feeling guilty, allowing fun to be okay, and dealing with expectations of myself and others, are not easy lessons to learn, but, they are required skills if you want to stay healthy and happy. Here’s a simple technique (skill) to use when that rush of adrenaline puts you in “Worry mode”:

Look around the room and name three things you see. Now, listen, what are three things you hear? Then feel, physically, three things, like your feet in your shoes, your watch on your wrist.

How WEIGHT LOSS Hypnosis Really Works by George Guarino,CH,CI ow does a person become a slimmer person with hypnosis? It’s not a diet. It’s not mind control. The client, with help from the hypnotist, learns that it’s OK to move into a new relationship with food as they control their own mind to make it happen. Think about it, with simple small changes in behavior, over time, great things are accomplished.

H

What does it feel like being a slimmer person? How do you feel now with less weight? As you sense your clothes fit comfortably now how do you feel? These are the kinds of questions that I ask my clients who come to lose weight and feel good about themselves. When I ask these questions, in the present tense, it usually brings a smile to their face because whether they’ve just begun the process or have already released some weight, the questions make you think. And thinking is where it all begins with hypnosis. Powerful positive thinking is where it’s at my friends. As you become comfortable and allow yourself to follow my suggestions, and feel good, it just gets better and better. What once stood in your way propels you forward into your desired future, as if it’s already happened, because in a sense, it has. Isn’t that why you would want to come to a hypnotist? 14 Healing Springs I #75 August—September 2014

A child must learn to stand up before they walk, and walk before they run. Once a child feels the freedom of movement, will they ever go back to being confined to crawling? I suppose some will and some do, but I think we would all agree that anyone would want to help that child to regain the freedom they once experienced. And that child would once again walk and then run with the right help, encouragement and training. Even when physical handicaps hold people back, the hope and desire, the strength to take small steps naturally leads to the next step. Reminding a human being of their unlocked potential is often the key to inspired imagination. Unlock the door and move through it with curiosity, interest and delight. Is it OK to act differently? What would that be like? Can you imagine that now? What would that give you that feels good? There are two parts to good hypnosis technique. The most commonly recognized part is the direct positive suggestions that the hypnotist compounds for the client in hypnosis. In hypnosis, with trance logic, the hypnotist feeds back to the client what it is they want to be, do and feel about themselves. This is very powerful when you are in a state to receive the direction without hesitation or doubt. Good hypnosis technique will uncover the important feelings associated with attaining the goal. An authentic goal and desire will be acted upon so it’s imperative to dig deep and uncover the feelings having the goal will provide and take steps toward providing that powerful feeling.

“Many times through proper hypnotic technique, permission to succeed, encouragement and honest approval, the client will move steadily toward their goal without even realizing it.

No hard work required.”

Many times this is all that’s needed to move a client toward their desired goal as they realize how good it feels, as if they are already successful. Many times through proper hypnotic technique, permission to succeed, encouragement and honest approval, the client will move steadily toward their goal without even realizing it. No hard work required. You know what it’s like to feel good when you’ve done a good job. It feels great! You want to do it again. And with proper ego strengthening work you will move toward your goals naturally. You want more good feelings. We all do. And you want to stay away from old disappointing ones. This takes having a clear goal and determination to achieve it because it just feels so good to make that happen. The second hypnosis technique is the insight work that takes place on a deeper level which clears the way and inspires the client to become the authentic person they really want to be. When blocks come up for living the way a client wants to find themselves living it’s only because of an old debilitating belief they imagine to be true. An old protection. An old pattern. As you reexamine that belief in its true perspective the debilitating feeling associated with old behavior fades away. It’s no longer needed. Once this is dealt with in an ecological manner, and the old un-useful feeling is detached from the old behavior and tested, the client will now be free to attain their stated goal naturally. They may simply find themselves moving in the direction they want to go because it now feels right and brings you a sense of being in self-control and self-worth. You want to feel good, feel well and be happy.

In regard to releasing weight, you will find yourself making better choices without giving up anything. It’s freeing to feel that you have a choice and you choose to make decisions that support you to release weight and let it go forever. You can find yourself making better choices over and over again because it just feels so good. Whether it’s smaller portions, no snacking, healthier choices, appropriate eating times, or finding your one food nemesis has simply lost its appeal, without an organic reason that holds excessive weight in the body, appropriate, balanced weight loss is inevitable. More importantly you just feel good. If this sounds simple and easy you’ve got the kind of focused attention that would find hypnosis exciting and life transformational. I suggest you look for a hypnotist certified with the National Guild of Hypnotists, NGH. They will be happy to answer any of your specific questions about hypnosis and how it can help you in your daily life, especially to become the slimmer, attractive person you deserve to be. by Wendy Ball ay your troubles on the earth mother's belly. Let her mulch them, process them, digest them for you. It is a shamanic view of things that Mother Earth is our true mother, as Sky Father is our true father. In indigenous cultures youngsters enter adulthood ritually and release their biological parents of responsibility for them as they adopt Earth Mother and Sky Father as their true parents.

L Gently retraining off track thoroughbreds for new futures and placing them through thoughtful re-homing.

One of the ways of seeking nourishing assistance of Earth Mother is to create a "sand painting." This is a kind of mandala, a circle of created with sticks, stones, and other things found around, and within this laying more sticks and stones that represent the elements of the trouble, challenge, or issue you are sorting through. I will share with you how this is done as I learned it as a student of the Healing the Light Body School of the Four Winds Society. Find a place in your yard or somewhere that feels right to you.. It needs to be a place you can visit two or three times a day until your process is finished.

Keep going until you feel complete. Sometimes we surrender things to God. This is a way of surrendering your issue to the Earth, giving it to her to take care of, to process, to mulch. When that happens, dismantle your sand painting so the no one would ever know anything had happened there. Some people collect the sticks and leaves - anything that can be burned, and burn them in a sacred fire ceremony. Close sacred space by saying thank you to each of the directions, earth mother and sky father, for holding space and bearing witness to your process. Then notice what you experience around your issue in the coming days. One thing I love about working my "stuff" in a sand painting is that I invite Nature in. I don't feel so alone. I feel how I am held and supported by Nature. It gives me a way to be with my issue without thinking about it. Einstein said, that we cannot solve a problem at the same level that the problem was created. A sand painting is a way go to a place of images and felt relationship between things, a wordless place where a different perspective can be born. There is a kind of grace to this process. Riding the

Waves of

ADVERSITY by Diana Friedell dversity can be described as a challenging or stressful event. In this enlightened age, we often try to practice “positive thinking”, in order to manifest the desired outcome. AND My mother used to say “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it!”. So, often when a loved one is facing troubled times, we don’t know what to say, or do, and so just stay silent. We’ve all faced adversity in our lives, of all kinds- from minor mishaps, to major accidents, rejection, health challenges, relationship challenges, losing a loved one, and more- how do we go on? How do we find hope once again?

A

Waves of adversity can smack us down, and leave us directionless & floundering, or we find ways to ride them and arrive safely on the shore of a beautiful new land. When we lost our youngest child, Jamie, in an auto accident in 1995, my biggest question, besides “where did he go?” was “Does this grief ever end?” “Will I ever feel joy again?” When you are in the midst of grief, it can feel like there is no end to the suffering. I found out that, it may take years, but yes, this grief takes over less and less of your day, and one day you will feel somewhat healed but you will mostly likely not be the same person. I learned to think of this calamity, as a Chapter in the Book of my Life. So that is Helpful Hint #1 in Riding the Waves of Adversity: See this as a chapter in your life, and “This Too shall pass.” Whether I started a new chapter, or stayed stuck in hurt, anger and despair in this one, was entirely up to me. So Helpful Hint #2: You are the only one who can Act on your Own Behalf. How long you stay broken is up to you. I could close my doors, and shut out anyone’s attempts to provide healing, and live a sad miserable life for the next 40 years, or I could accept responsibility and love myself enough to want to heal, speed up the process of getting to the next chapter. I made myself accept helping hands- books, walk and talks, prayers, lunch dates, support groups. I tried to remain OPEN to the idea, that I didn’t and still don’t have all the answers, and sometimes the right words I need to hear, come from someone else at the most unexpected times- Trust the mystery. Of course, we face adversity in many forms, and taking a helping hand may not always apply, if you are keeping your circumstances private. Many people live a life of quiet desperation, rather than reach out for a helping hand and be subject to other’s 18 Healing Springs I #75 August—September 2014

people’s judgments & pity, and even worse, unhelpful advice and attempts to “cheer them up.” So they are unable to see any hope, and stay stuck. What if you are the one who is helping a friend or loved one deal with a divorce, being fired from a job, a health challenge, depression, addiction, a death, a calamity of any kind? You want to help them feel better, and offer them a hopeful statement, like, “When God closes a door, he opens a window”, or “count your blessings right now and be thankful for what you do have!” Whew! If anyone said that to me, when I was in grief, I might haul off and whack them one! And that response, of Anger, is what you could expect, when offering a hopeful statement to someone in grief or despair. According to The Emotional Guidance Scale, as outlined in Esther & Jerry Hicks book, “Ask and it is Given”, depression, grief, fear, powerlessness are emotional states that are at the very bottom of the emotional scale- #22. The top of the scale at #1 is Joy, Love and Appreciation- when you feel most connected to source energy. Optimism and hope are also way up at the top - #5, and #6. When someone is caught in despair thoughts, and depression, for you to recommend that they “count their blessings” – you are recommending that they jump from #22, despair, to “Appreciation” which is number 1 on the emotional Scale. ---way too high on the emotional scale for them to vibrationally reach- Anger is much easier to jump up to because it is #17. So if someone is ANGRY, they have moved out of despair and powerlessness, and up the emotional scale from #22 to #17. Being ANGRY is a good thing. When you have risen to the level of anger, and you are allowed to express it, you can then more easily jump to the higher states. So let your friend or loved one express their anger (responsibly, not by taking aim at you), and Just listen – don’t take it in, don’t argue- put up your shield and just listen, let them vent, just be there, just get it. Anger brings you to want to take action. Just moving around, going for a walk, a swim, or a run or simply getting out the vacuum cleaner, Movement changes your physiological state and you begin to feel a shift. And by taking action, you’ve taken some control and begin to feel that you have some power to affect change once again. Helpful Hint #3 - Non-Judgment: Compassionate Friends, the organization for parents who’ve lost a child, has a motto “Don’t Should on Me”- in other words don’t tell me where I should be in my grief, what I should do for myself. It doesn’t matter what you’ve read, or seen on TV, your loved one doesn’t need your judgment, just your listening ear, your compassion and uncondi-

#4-VICTIM Thinking: Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change. Notice and catch yourself when you start being a victim. Wanting to blame the world for your circumstances- When Jamie died, my husband and I had lots of people we could have blamed - the busdriver, the truck driver, each other, and we consciously decided not to blame anyone. No one did this on purpose. By doing this, I think we got unstuck more quickly. Tony Robbins, in his TED Talk from 2006, said “It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.” And ; “Decision is the ultimate power. Decisions shape destiny.”

Helpful Hint #5 LEAVE the PAST BEHIND you, where it belongs. YOU are not defined by what you did or didn’t do in the past. Visualize closing the door on the past. Look forward now. 10:08 PM Finally, in facing Adversity, one more point- When you lose, don’t lose the lesson. This is not helpful to hear this when you are in the midst of rejection and depression, because its hard to get. As spiritual beings in this physical body, we are here to learn and grow on our life path. But in hind sight, some day you will look back on this and view this adversity as a turning point in your life, that got you unexpectedly on a different, but profoundly meaningful path. When I was about 26, I took a course in which we were required to write our own obituary- in other words, projecting out to the end of your life, what will you have accomplished that will be in your obituary- and in my wildest, huge most risky jump, I said that Diana Friedell would be remembered for having founded a community theater company, acting and producing 100 plays and having three children. I did all that by the time I was 35. If anyone had told me that one of my children would die, and I would subsequently become a minister and a psychic medium, start my own business, and teach around the country about meditation and intuition 30 years later I would have thought they were crazy. And yet here I am, somehow riding those waves, having gently landed on a new shore.

by Sarah LoBisco, ND f you’ve been following health news, you’re probably one of the many who are swallowing down your capsule containing of billions of bugs daily. Of course, I’m speaking about your probiotics. Who would’ve thought that in our germ-a-phobic times, many health seekers would be swallowing capsules of bugs by the billons?

I

This is because we’ve been made aware by various health gurus that a happy community of bugs (termed our microbiome) will assist in calming our mood, quieting inflammation, and aiding our digestive woes.

s se w! s a cl no 4 g 1 20 r min fo

Our gastrointestinal (GI) tract is home to over 70% of our immune system. (It’s termed the gut-associated lymphoid tissue or GALT). It is also the major site of our neurotransmitter production (the enteric nervous system, or ENS). This means our belly plays a role as a powerful influencer for modulating our immune system, digestion, and mood. So, it’s no wonder that our society is paying so much attention to the little buggy bacteria that live in our colon! In fact, the National Institute of Health undertook the Human Microbiome Project, a massive research initiative to study our gut microbes. Their goal was to first map out microbial communities that exist within the mucosal surfaces of our body. (A big project considering the microbiome’s collective genes of its 10,000+ species outnumber human genes 150 to 1.) (1) Their next step is in progress which is to study the various species attributes and how they affect our health and our disease processes. Currently, the documented role that our microbiome plays in wellness is very extensive. Beneficial microflora has been reported to have many roles in our health. Now it’s time for an update in new research and more tips on how to keep our bellies happy!

The latest research is demonstrating a connection to microflora population and autism, H.pylori (an organism responsible for ulcers) eradication support, and how exercise may help boost beneficial bug balance.

How to Make Sure Your Belly Bugs are Happy For the most part, I do recommend probiotics to most of my client. Eating fermented foods such as organic kefir, sauerkraut, miso, and tempeh can also provide a whole food source of probiotics. It is imperative to also provide our microbiome with proper “bug food” to keep them strong and healthy. This means including “prebiotics” in the diet such as jerusalem artichoke, and fruits and vegetables that are good sources of soluble fiber (sweet potatoes, brussels sprouts, asparagus, turnips, mango, avocados, strawberries, apricots).

Different Bugs for Different Folks Just as everyone had different genetic makeups, our bug blueprint in our gut differs and has different metabolic and nutritional needs from one person to the next. As discussed above, current research is suggesting that the beneficial actions the probiotics play on our biochemistry may be more important than the number of probi-

“For the most part, I do recommend probiotics to most of my client. Eating fermented foods such as organic kefir, sauerkraut, miso, and tempeh can also provide a whole food source of probiotics. “ otics. In fact, I have seen cases where the wrong probiotic for the wrong amount of time actually produced more gastrointestinal irritation. This is why I suggest to my clients to rotate strains and brands as their health conditions change. I tend to use probiotic products that differ in their actions according to the specific strains that are present which signal modulation of inflammation, weight loss, and/or gastrointestinal motility, depending on what is needed at the time. However, we may need to keep them on a specific species modulator for extended periods, depending on their genetics, health condition, and environmental interactions.

When diet and bug pills aren’t enough There are other things to consider for digestive and overall health, these include digestive enzymes, removing small intestinal bowel overgrowth (a condition in which probiotics are actually contraindicated!), hormonal balance, oxidative stress, neurotransmitter formation, energy metabolism, and inflammation. Furthermore, if one has chronic yeast (Candida) infections or adrenal fatigue, it may be wise to first kill off the pathogen with natural or conventional antimicrobials first. (I like to use essential oils first-see below). So, if you are experiencing “side effects” from probiotics or prebiotics, you could have a “bug war” going on in your gut and it may be wise to explore how to calm the buggers down, due to their impact on overall wellness in order to prevent more issues down the road. Ask the ractitioner

“For some time I have been bothered with stress. The doctor has put me on Paxil. However, I am very sensitive to hurtful things my fiancé says to me. Many times his words give me nausea that lasts for the entire day. I need spiritual guidance to overcome this matter. Can you help?”

Acupuncture; Gregg St Clair When some one comes to me for stress or anxiety the first thing I try to determine is whether it is situational or a pattern. It's easier to get past a situation, say a difficult financial period or health problem, but if someone has an underlying tendency towards stress, that is harder to treat because now we are looking at personal transformation. Often people just want to diminish the uncomfortable feelings without doing the work to change the underlying behaviors. You say you have been bothered by stress "for some time," so you need to ask yourself: is it the situation or my conditioned responses? In Chinese Medicine we would try to determine between Yin (internal) and Yang (external), and quite often it can be both! Medication like Paxil is an option however there are natural treatments that can be used as alternatives. There are herbs such as passion flower, techniques such as meditation, there's psychotherapy, exercise, flower remedies and a host of tools that might be beneficial. The problem with medications, besides the fact that many people don't want to be on them, is they will never give you a chance to transform the underlying problems. You need to find the tools that work for you. I work with emotional disturbances such as anxiety and depression often and I have seen acupuncture to be one of the best tools. Studies have shown that acupuncture releases endorphins from the brain which not only make you feel better, they also block the chemicals that are created by stress from effecting the body; in your case, causing the nausea. However, given that you are asking for spiritual guidance coupled with the stress response coming after words your fiance have spoken lead me to believe you are going through more than a conditioned or situational response. It sounds more psycho/spiritual or existential. The fact you are nauseous the whole day after his harsh words indicates you are either very sensitive, or energetically, your body is telling you something is wrong. Why would a fiance say hurtful things to you? Why would you marry someone who speaks that way? If you are unsure about your future with this man it makes sense your body is creating stress and nausea. I'm not implying you shouldn't marry your fiance I'm wondering about what you are doing to improve the situation. Relationships are not meant to always be easy and perfect, they are meant to be challenging and used as a vehicle for personal growth. He might be the exact right person to help you on your road to personal

transformation (which could also lead to nausea). Have you talked to him about your feelings and responses to his words? We can't get mad at someone for not giving us what we never asked for. Perhaps he is unaware of his affect on you. You owe it to him, yourself and your potential future relationship to start a dialog and if necessary seek professional help. If you don't do the work now, it will be that much harder later on. The treatments I have to offer for the stress, be it to the situation or an underlying pattern, are acupuncture, herbs and meditation. The spiritual guidance I would give is that; you, your fiance, and the stress are all together for a reason. Embrace the situation and see it as a vehicle for growth. As you grow the relationship has the potential to grow. Personal growth is the foundation of a dynamic relationship. If your partner doesn't want to do any work, then you have to ask yourself: Is this the person I want to spend the rest of my life with? www.stclairfamilyacupuncture.com

Homeopathy; Claudia Ascione Emotions such as stress and hurt feelings that expand into a lingering physical response like the nausea are often an invitation to heal a profound issue, one that you may have carried for a long time. The potency of the response carries with it an equally powerful opportunity for its transformation. The first step towards healing this response is to reflect more deeply upon it. A powerful spiritual practice for bringing a deeper, compassionate awareness to a troublesome emotion is to write, in vivid detail and without judgment, all the feelings that arise from within about this issue. This simple practice of contemplative writing clarifies the feelings and most importantly creates a light spaciousness around the complex of emotions. This light spaciousness becomes a compassionate, detached view through which you can regard the feelings. You then become more an observer of the feelings, less identified with them and thus their hold over you is lessened. Since stress and many other hurt feelings run deep and have been long standing, you may need to write about it over a period of time to reach enough separation so as to become a witness to them. This separation diminishes the psychic power of the feelings. If you patiently persist with earnest intent to bring clarity and release to the feelings, this simple approach will help clear the inner pain and can open the doorway to the creative, healing forces of the universe and ultimately to more peace. Claudia Ascione, MA, MS, CH, is a practitioner in the healing arts of homeopathy, spiritual counsel, hypnosis, regression and Jin Shin Jyutsu. She uses a deeply intuitive and spiritual approach to bring awareness and clarity to healing concerns. She offers private sessions in Niskayuna, Manhattan and in Ardsley, NY. Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell The question that you pose can be viewed and addressed from a number of levels, but you asked for spiritual guidance. So the bulk of my comments will be from that perspective. Before beginning,

JEROME MICHAEL PINDELL Homeopathy Hypnosis Jin Shin Jyutsu

518 374-5492 www.jeromepindell.com I have used and could recommend Homeopathy to assist you with the stress and the reaction as it manifests in nausea. More to the point however is the question of why, and the trigger to your ongoing stress, your sensitivity, and where you place that stress, which is in your gut and manifests as nausea. The triggering of your sensitivities coming as they do from “hurtful” comments by your fiancé leads to many questions that beg for illumination. At the outset, while I do not wish to interfere with your decision to use Paxil, it is a drug that will short circuit your ability to delve deeply into the nature and causes of your stress. Nevertheless, if you have been an observant follower of your emotional triggers you can begin by noting what the triggers have in common with one another. Usually there is a common theme in either the comments that trigger a response or there is a common reaction that if explored will carry you back to feelings or reminders of earlier times when your body reacted in similar ways. That in general is referred to as a somatic response. Journaling is a very simple way of bringing forth information and putting it before you, getting it out of yourself, and reading it with a degree of dispassion to begin to string together that very complex array of feelings that are triggered by your fiancé. He is likely not the first person to have brought forth your reactions. Journaling does not need to be formally precise. It can be done as outlines, or even just a few words and phrases that serve you in your explorations.

expression of ourselves, when we suppress them. Your fiancé offers you the opportunity to explore the question: “Is this what I want?” Why does he say what he says, what is his point, what does it trigger in you that needs resolution before you marry, what keeps you from demanding that you are spoken to with respect? What is his point in making the comments that he is making? The questions are many, and the answers are ones that deserve your attention. Homeopathy, hypnosis and any of the other modalities that are practiced here can support you, but ultimately you are the controller of your destiny. Those of us who write here are mere helpers in the larger destiny that your soul has undertaken. Take the help that supports you in that task, not the one that masks over the empowerment that you seek. Wishing you the best in your journey. Jerome M Pindell uses the modalities of homeopathy, hypnosis, jin shi jyutsu and spiritually based counseling to assist his clients. He has offices in Clifton Park, Niskayuna, and NYC. He is a poet, whose book ‘Training Tracks, poems by implosion’ can be found on Amazon. He can be reached at 518-374-5492, or through his website www.jeromepindell.com

Then there is the issue of your sensitivity. In my work, I am consistently drawing attention to clients’ sensitivity and all of the ways that our society discourages the gift that is our sensitivity. Yes, it can be a double edged sword, but emotional responses are tools to be used for our protection as well as our exploration of the many layers of growth opportunities that life places in front of us. Used properly, triggers can free us to greater potentiality or hinder our opportunities to move into a more expansive #75 August—September 2014 I Healing Springs

Autoimmune

Disease

When the Body’s Surveillance System Goes Haywire by Heidi Rasmussen, MD ne out of every six people in the United States has some type of autoimmune disease, according to the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association. They estimate that as many as 50 million Americans suffer from autoimmune disease. Compare this with the National Institute of Health report of 22 million with heart disease and nine million with cancer, and you can start to get some kind of idea of the impact of these illnesses.

O

Autoimmune disease is a distorted recognition of self. The body mounts an abnormal immune response against substances and tissues that are normally present in the body. The manifestations are diverse and vary from one individual to the next. Conditions that are commonly recognized as autoimmune disorders include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, sjogren’s, colitis, thyroiditis, psoriasis, and celiac disease. Asthma, allergies, eczema, and hives are well established as disordered immune function. Even conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and multiple sclerosis are being recognized within the context of immune dysregulation. The role of inflammation in autism and mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety, is being explored as well. The problem is not a small one, and it would probably be difficult to find someone whose life has not been touched by this in a significant way. With autoimmune disease occurring three times more commonly in women, there is clearly a bias toward the female gender. We don’t know why exactly this is, but there are theories about hormones and the role of the immune system in trying to maintain a healthy pregnancy and trying to discriminate between self and nonself. The incidence of autoimmune disease is on the rise, and researchers are trying to sort out the reasons for this trend. Interestingly, autoimmune disorders occur almost exclusively in developed countries. We don’t know for sure all of the triggers, but hidden allergens, infections, environmental toxins, inflammatory diet, and stress may be the real causes of these conditions. There is

As we sanitize our hands and homes and sterilize our food, we no longer receive the input from the environment that is necessary to prime our immune systems in a healthy way. Every time you eat a standard American diet meal, high in saturated and transsaturated fats, processed ingredients, and simple sugars, an inflammatory cascade sweeps through your system, lasting for several hours—until your next meal…and then the meal after that. When does it get a break? Chronic infections and inflammation have been shown to damage blood vessels, contributing to cardiovascular disease, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, which, according to the Center for Disease Control, affects more than one in five adults. Vaccinations and antibiotics are critical players in the health of our nation and the world. Through their discovery and use, we have significantly impacted and eliminated many of the diseases that were killers at the beginning of the last century, but they need to be used discriminately. Your immune system is your defense against invaders. It is your internal army and it has to decide between friend and foe. There is a continuum in the immune system, and a balance has to be found somewhere between being overzealous and being insufficient. Without an immune system, we wouldn’t last a day. We are constantly interacting with potential invaders. Autoimmunity occurs when your immune system gets confused and your own tissues get caught in the crossfire. When your immune system

gets confused in its defense, it may begin to attack itself. This could be your joints, your gut, your skin, your thyroid, or your brain. Important factors in the treatment of autoimmune disease include evaluating for hidden infections, food allergies, and toxicity, such as heavy metals. Optimizing nutrition and function of the gut are critical. Many foods act as natural antiinflammatories, and specific and targeted supplements can complement a healthy diet. Regular exercise, stress management, adequate sleep, and deep relaxation have been shown to calm the immune system naturally. There is an interplay between your genetics and your environment. Prevention is a lot simpler than treatment, so living a healthy lifestyle will help your system stay in harmony. And if your immune system does go haywire, find yourself a team of compassionate and caring healthcare professionals who can help bring you back to balance. To learn more about the immune system I will be giving a free lecture at Saratoga Botanicals on June 25, 2014 at Saratoga Botanicals. I will explore the common pathways in the development and diversity of autoimmune disease, how the body regulates immunity and defends itself against invaders, and how you can optimize the function of your own immune system. Love, Breathe

for Earth:

A Story of Finding Purpose by Hillary Raimo t began with a trip to Cape Cod with my biological sister. A reunion of love and a journey of healing. We made pilgrimage to the beaches both bay side and Atlantic side. It was late April and it clear of the usual Summer tourist season, which made our journey easier. I had just returned from a pilgrimage to Colorado where I had been involved with a ceremony in the Garden of the Gods on my 41st birthday, which happened to fall on a full blood moon lunar eclipse. It was a very special day. Here on the Cape we were honoring the solar eclipse that, according to Astrologists, was a partner eclipse to the April 15th lunar event.

I

We set up for ceremony on a lovely bay side beach. The dunes were majestic and there was an element of magic in the air. My sister and I gathered in a comfortable space and we began to meditate with the lowering sun. The eclipse was not visible from our part of the world. We were stopping here first to connect to the energy before we continued on to a beach near Provincetown where we would do our final ceremony during the exact time of the eclipse. We settled in and felt the connection. I felt the meditation was enhanced by my sister and later I would reflect on the power of meditating with your own blood relatives. For now we simply did what we came to do. As we finished, we left offerings of sage, cedar, ash, and color beads left to us by our Grandmother Miriam when she died last Summer. An honoring to our ancestral lineage. As we walked up over the dune to our car, as we got to the top, we stopped in amazement. The words LOVE and then BREATHE were written in the sand. We paused and took some pictures. Amazed at the message. Love, then breathe. Simple and yet fantastically powerful. Little did I know at that time, it would become a worldwide sensation uniting hearts cross culturally around the world. We continued on and found our location where we again did meditation, ceremony and made offerings to nature. It was a glorious day.

treasures to bring home with us. But what came back that turned out to be the most beautiful was the message. Love, then Breathe. I was inspired to create a global meditation out of the message. I set up our first event for May 18th. It began as a Facebook event. The meditation was Love, Breathe for Earth. After having a vision of what it meant to love, then breathe, I saw all humans doing this simple, nondenominational, cross cultural act and the interaction with the natural world around us. An intentional conscious connection in the moment with and for the benefit of Earth. So the plans were set into motion. I followed spirits call and the synchronistic signs around me. My sister and I created an altar and meditated on it every day. We diligently put our hearts into creating an act of beauty in the world around us. I reached out to the office of the Dalai Lama for his blessing on the event. Much to our surprise, it was granted. We had people all over the world joining in. The idea of Love, Breathe for Earth was catching on fast. Lighting up the hearts of all who agreed to join it. It was a virus of love spreading in a good way to all who participated. While that was all happening I had completed my first two paintings. Twin canvases of the lunar and solar eclipses that began the Love, Breathe journey. I stepped into my fears and hesitations and began. I reached out to a teacher locally who started me with the basics. He was teaching me exactly what I needed to do this. So it was moving along with all the hustle and bustle of creating this event. I made the commitment and I followed through. I believe this is a necessary component of the journey to your purpose. I kept track of all the places people told us they were joining in from. I marked them on a global map. We had groups forming all over the United States, UK, India, Indonesia, Australia, and many more places. Everyone was told to fill their body with a feeling of love, whatever that may be for each person, and then to feel that feeling for as long as they liked, and then to exhale that love into the air on behalf of the Earth. That was it. However else they choose to honor the moment was up to them. This wasn’t about how too, what you believe, your religion, there was no protocol, no rules. Just a simple act of intention and beauty for the Earth. I painted the grid of the May 18th meditation. Carefully working the locations of those who joined in somehow in the painting. I painted the latitude and longitude lines. I included the symbols that showed up in the patterns across the planet. It was a beautiful experience. Another one was planned for June 8th. I found myself inside the Great Pyramid in Cairo, Egypt for that one. A story for another time.

During the five days we were in the Cape I had a dream. In the dream a voice told me to paint my visions. I sat up that same morning in bed and said “What!” “I don’t know how to paint!” and I knew because of how that message came in, I had to do everything in my power to do it. No matter how much anxiety, trepidation, and no amount of excuses or distraction, could sway what needed to be done. I had no idea what to do, or how to do it. But I did know people who could help. So I made a note in my mind to follow through when I got back to New York.

Sometimes we get so caught up in the building of something we forget to appreciate the story of how it all came to be. Our purpose is never laid out in an outline waiting for us to agree or disagree. It simply lives within and all around us. We just have to choose to follow the signs. To trust them. To allow them expression and as we follow through on each of these, one at a time, staying open to receive what comes next, we will find ourselves on an incredible adventure that in and of itself reveals the magic and coordinates of our purpose. It is our own personal puzzle and as we find each piece the Universe cheers us on excited to see us fully manifest our beauty in the world.

Over the five days my sister and I had an extraordinary journey. We talked and laughed, and sat out under the stars on the beach, we explored the coast, looking for signs and blessings from the Earth as we went. We made pilgrimage to thrift stores and found wonderful

Invisible Grandparenting by Pat Hanson, Ph.D. am an invisible grandparent. I have been kept from my granddaughter Annie, now 12, for eight years. There’s an empty spot on my counter every year for the Christmas cards I’ll never get, or thank-you notes for presents I can’t send. Eight years! Eight missed Valentines Days, eight Christmases, eight Halloweens and the hardest: eight Mother’s days!

I

I am not alone. On September 7th 70 million grandparents in America will get to celebrate Grandparents Day; but countless numbers of them will not. Many of us, because of distance, personality conflicts, complicated custody issues, or choices made long ago, have no way to leave behind our values and memories for those who mean the most to us. And let’s face it; we all may all be long gone and invisible by the time our grandkids ask about us. Grandparents play a vital role in children’s lives. They can do and say things overworked and overwrought parents cannot. Just as having a child opens the door to a deeper level of love, grandparenting takes that even further. For those of us who don’t get to do it: Yes, it hurts and Yes, we can heal the hole in our hearts and leave a legacy of love whether we can be there or not. My memoir Invisible Grandparenting: Leave a Legacy of Love Whether You Can Be There or Not, is about a very difficult decade in my life. I share the many ways, some gracious and others not, that I undertook to heal separation. I wrote letters and saved hundreds for the hypothetical day Annie might look

me up. Some were about Oh the Places We Would Go or Thank Yous are Important. I even wrote one on Love, Sex and Marriage for a teenage Annie in answer to a question: You were Married Three Times Grandma, Why? But those weren’t the only letters I wrote. Some to Annie’s mother I spouted out specifically to be Said and Never Sent, to purposely dump and diffuse the negative energy I was feeling. Those I literally burned dancing in the moonlight to Janis Joplin’s Piece of My Heart. Those letters moved me closer to transforming some of that negative energy to forgiveness. I did many things to heal, including developing a website for other estranged grandparents to tell their story, and find resources that might help them. On August 12th, from 1:00-4:00 at The Pine Hills Arboretum on 16 Maple Ave in Slingerlands, New York 12159. I will be offering a workshop LEAVE A LEGACY OF LOVE NOW: INVISIBLE GRANDPARENTING for anyone, regardless of grandparent status, who wishes to discover how we can support the futures of all grandchildren. There are countless ways we can pass on “what we know in our bones” we want children to hear. Please join us for the “love offering” of $30, the proceeds of which will be tithed to the arboretum and the New York New Thought Center for Spiritual Living. Space is limited. In an attempt to go deeper into what this emotional release is, why it happens, and what can be learned from such an experience, I interviewed practitioners from multiple bodywork modalities to understand their different approaches. This interview with Gregg St.Clair, one of my instructors, contained some interesting insights into the powerful mystery of emotional release.

What is your primary modality and how long have you been practicing? Howdy, my name is Cap’n Crunch. I am a 3 year old male beagle mix. Please come visit me....

About Our Shelter The Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society (MHRHS) of Menands, New York has been saving the lives of abused and unwanted animals since 1887. MHRHS is a non-profit organization that receives no ongoing funding from federal, state or local governments or any other animal welfare organization. We rely on your generous donations to support our vital services for the animals.

I originally started practicing Oriental Medicine on my own in 1991 when I lived in Boulder, Colorado. This included Tai Chi, Qi Gong, herbs, meditation and Taoist longevity arts. I officially started school in 1998 at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in San Diego, California where I learned acupuncture, herbs and massage; I’ve been licensed and practicing in NY since 2001.

How would you describe your modality? Oriental Medicine has been around for thousands of years and been used on billions of people. I believe it is one of the most effective modalities and looks at an individual as a holistic functional being. It can be used for prevention and treatment of most physical and emotional problems.

Does your practice have a primary specialty? Most people think of acupuncture as being for pain but I treat everything a western medical doctor treats including chronic autoimmune disease, ob/gyn, geriatrics, anxiety, depression and addictions to name a few. After graduation I knew I wanted to work with all types of illnesses but personal and spiritual transformation is my favorite to work with.

How would you define emotional release?

Healing Springs I #75 August—September 2014

Emotional release is the waking up or setting free of stored, repressed and unconscious thoughts and feelings causing an energetic and/or physical reaction. These come from traumas, usually physical or emotional, that happened in the past. For the person experiencing the release, it can be either a positive or negative experience.

the

Healing Springs JOURNAL

Healing Springs Mission: With knowledge comes choice. Our mission at The Healing Springs Journal is to address the whole person by providing articles and stories that allow the reader to make empowered lifestyle decisions in relation to the wellness of their mind, body, spirit, and environment.

www.healingspringsjournal.com / www.issuu.com/healingspringsjournal How does emotional release happen? I believe it can only happen when the person is ready and strong enough to deal with the emotions. Until then, they will be controlled and restrained by fear and the ego. The release can happen spontaneously but usually is preceded by a trigger; perhaps a memory, traumatic experience or modality such as acupuncture, massage or yoga therapy that taps into what has been suppressed for so long.

How/why are emotions stored in the body? Molecules and neurotransmitters accompany every thought and emotion so part of it is physical and chemical, but the larger part is energetic. It’s believed memories and emotions reside within the brain but in Oriental Medicine we say they are stored in the organs. The purpose of storing these emotions is to protect us. With emotional release, there are memories hidden that we’d usually rather not look at and it is a defense mechanism intrinsic to all humans to avoid pain and suffering.

What can be expected from emotional release? Many reactions are possible. The main one I see during acupuncture is crying but sometimes there will be an awkward laughter and the person might not even know why there are crying or laughing. Sometimes the person will feel a sense of dread or panic as the repressed emotions surface. I’ve also seen the release followed by wonder and insights, but these are usually only experienced by an already aware person.

Does emotional release come up in your practice? Yes, I’ve seen many emotional releases. In acupuncture, I believe the needles are foreign invasions in the body that can act as a catalyst to breach the ego’s defenses. Not everyone that comes in is looking for this to happen. Usually it takes them by surprise. Many times I’ve walked into a treatment room to check on somebody and they are crying. When I ask them if they know why they are crying they will usually say they don’t know. How people react after the release is interesting too. They might not ever want to feel that way again, or they might be ready to get down to some much needed work.

Is there a specific approach to emotional release that your modality takes? In Oriental Medicine one word for these stuck emotions are “Ghosts,” and the goal is to release these ghosts. In fact we have a set of points

called the Ghost Points and they are used even for psychiatric disturbances such as Bi-Polar Syndrome and Schizophrenia. There are also herbs, Qi Gong and massage that can be used to support.

Are there any techniques that relate specifically to emotional release that you practice? How do they relate? There are many ways to work with ghosts and we even have a set of points called the “Windows of the Sky,” designed to help one to “see clearly” and not be controlled by these ghosts/emotions. Plus every organ has an emotion connected to it and every acupuncture point has both physical and emotional functions. It is the goal of the practitioner to determine the disharmony and apply appropriate therapies and treatment.

Have you ever had an emotional release during a session? I haven’t had what I typically see which is crying or panic, but I occasionally get insights; what I call “Aha” moments. They can be quite profound and you can’t make them happen, but you need to be open and available to receive them.

Any other thoughts you have on emotional release as it relates to your modality? If we do not work on ridding ourselves of these stored emotions they will stay inside of us causing all sorts of emotional and physical damage, typically seen as anxiety or depression, until they are transformed. “Release” doesn’t necessarily mean they are let go but that they are seen, recognized and come out of hiding. In fact, they might never be completely released, say for example severe cases of abuse or the grief surrounding the loss of a child, but the debilitating effects can be mitigated and transformed so they are no longer as damaging. The problem is most people don’t want to face these emotions/thoughts and repress them back into the body. But transformative spirituality does not leave us content, it leaves us undone! This is the most profound of all types of healing, personal transformation, and it is the job of a skilled therapist to help us through this work. The further we go as practitioners, the further we can take our patients. The only thing more difficult than doing the work is NOT doing the work! Gregg St.Clair practices in Clifton Park. Incorporating the Herd into the Equine Massage Session by Connie Grob, Susan Aleksejczyk and Avis Burnett ave you ever considered having your horse massaged? A certified equine massage therapist can bring great relief under a variety of circumstances: to the equine athlete, the horse recovering from injury, the backyard trail buddy, or a rescue. However, have we considered all the options for getting the maximum effectiveness out of our equine massage therapy session?

H

Humans sometimes project their preferences onto their horses. For example, humans may enjoy a massage in a private room with low lighting. For horses, though, such an environment is frightening because it is in contradiction to their natural survival instincts. Horses seem to do best when there are no restrictions on their sense of sight, smell and sound. This makes questionable the current practice of most equine massage therapists: to have the horse in its stall – presumably it’s a “safe and comfortable space” for horse and massage therapist. From a horse’s perspective, however, is it safe and reassuring to be isolated in an enclosed space? Might we actually maximize the effectiveness of our equine massage therapy session by incorporating the fundamentals of the herd? Horses have strong social bonds with each other which are essential to their sense of wellbeing. “Herd behavior is [an] important motivating factor for a horse and is present in our everyday dealings with horses, more so than is often recognized,” says Julie Goodnight of Julie Goodnight Horsemanship Training and Goodnight Training Stables, Inc. In fact, by nature, horses associate being alone with being vulnerable to predators, which can increase anxiety and hypervigilence – certainly contraindicated for this form of therapy. Perhaps the most advantageous place to have a horse receive its massage is in the company of a herd mate. Horses in a herd use body language as the most important means of communication. Being able to read a horse’s body language is a key element of being an effective equine massage therapist. The equine massage process may be described as a series of: search, response, stay and release. With each of these steps, the therapist looks to the horse for a physical response. For instance, in the “search” aspect, the therapist palpates a muscle group looking for signs of tension or adhesions. If these conditions are present, the horse will indicate with a “response” as subtle as the blink of an eye or a twitch of the muzzle. With an acknowledging response from the horse, direct pressure is applied and the therapist “stays” with that position awaiting a “release,” which may be demonstrated through licking, chewing, yawning (to name only a few examples).

34

So what do you do with the horse who simply cannot release? Not all horses are able to relax enough to release during a massage. Healing Springs I #75 August—September 2014

This is when the power of the herd may be especially helpful. It is quite possible that being in the vicinity of a herd mate helps a horse feel more secure, safe and available for the massage. This thought came about when Certified Equine Massage Therapist and owner of Helping Hands Equine Massage, Connie Grob, discovered this while massaging a horse in the presence of other horses. Connie Grob and Susan Aleksejczyk have worked together in the horse industry for many years. Susan had asked Connie to come to RoseWal Farm to massage an ex-racehorse that is the farm’s best therapy and lesson horse. Connie began massaging the horse in its paddock when she noticed other horses, forming a circle around her and the horse being massaged. Connie and Susan found this to be intriguing, because it seemed intentional. All horses were calm, with heads hung low, so Connie continued. Then she noticed the surrounding horses, yawning, licking, chewing at the same time she felt the muscle release with no visual reaction from the horse being massaged. This continued throughout the massage. When Connie was done, she wanted to find out more about this phenomenon, and began to do research on the web for additional information. She found nothing. Connie continued to research this with other clients and their horses and found the same results. Research shows the herd is of great importance to horses because they seek a shared emotional connection. Such a connection creates neural resonance, which means that one horse will translate the actions, sensations and even the emotions of another horse into its own neuro body language so that it is, in fact, having the same experience.* Simply put, any horse around the horse being massaged receives and participates in that experience. This herd phenomenon allows for a more effective massage of the horse. In short, it is as though the herd experiences – and helps facilitate – releases while being near the horse receiving the massage. This technique has proven very effective in the Helping Hands Equine Massage practice. Connie and many of her clients now recognize and rely on herd fundamentals in their daily equine routines. *This information was obtained from “The Bond” by Lynne McTaggart and “The Power of the Herd” by Linda Kohanov. Connie Grob (www.helpinghandsequinemassage.com) is an Equine Massage Therapist certified in Equissage, while additionally implementing the Masterson Method and Reiki in her massage sessions. Connie is also the owner of Helping Hands Equine Massage which serves the Capital District. Susan Aleksejczyk (www.rosewalfarm.com) is EAGALA Certified, trained in Large Animal Emergency Rescue and specializes in human/equine practices at RoseWal Farm. Avis Burnett, PhD (www.avisburnett.com) holds a doctorate in Transpersonal Psychology and has over 20 years of experience.
