Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you Every person’s life tells a story, and every person has his or her story about life. One of my stories has been the choice between soul and ego. After years of believing that you picked one or the other, I’ve concluded they are both integral parts of human life. Just as the brain, lungs and heart have separate functions in a body, so too do the soul and ego. As such, these two facets have distinct priorities and which one we give our allegiance to creates a different life focus. For example, egos search for goals, definitives, comfort, winning, accomplishments, and end results. While souls seek authenticity, creativity, expression, depth, experiences, growth, journeys, and expansion. Because of their potential contrasts, sometimes our souls and egos divide, causing a splintering that is similar to a business meeting where all in attendance have separate agendas. Human life is full of paradox, as exemplified in breathing, the very thing that keeps us alive. For we can not breathe in without breathing out and vice versa. There is nothing better about in or out, they are equal in their opposites. Embracing this, and its implications, may be a giant step to wholeness. I recently had a portrait photo session with a talented photographer who had taken one of my “Calling Council” workshops (6 weeks of modern shamanic journeys). I note the latter, because she wanted the portrait to show that side of me—the teacher, my ancient self, and dare I say my soul. I brought with me a selection of feathers and skulls that touch and open my heart. As of now, I have seen only two of the photos, both amazing—one especially unique (see below). In this one image I can visibly see the presence and strength that I had otherwise only felt. At the same time, it also shows me that a photo is simply an image of a moment in time. Our lives are a string of ongoing moments—some powerful, some weak and many more in between. While a photo says more than a thousand words, it is still only a morsel of the person or situation. We all have endless depths below what can be seen on the surface. It is our responsibility to swim in those depths and learn what makes up ‘us’ regardless of whether it touches the outside world or is understood by anyone else. It is wise to remember that all others have the same expanse below what we see or understand about them, as well. I took an online class on branding to boost my writing, public speaking and workshops. This would not normally be my cup of tea, yet I respect the teacher and decided to go for it based on that. Creating a brand had previously felt artificial. However, this class, in addition to the photo session, made me realize we are always projecting an image. To do so mindfully is actually more authentic than simply letting chance create it. While it is also true that the image is just a fraction of who I am as a whole, I’d like it to be a representation of the place where my inner and outer worlds intersect. Being clear about our presentation to the world does not equal control over how other’s see us, nor is that of any significance to our soul. Egos want to be seen in a specific way, happy, successful, beautiful. While souls want to experience the happiness, success and beauty. Being true to ourselves, sincerely, compassionately, creatively, is doing our part. The rest is out of our hands. In the end, we only have our own heart to answer to. A place both my soul and personality simultaneously ignite is listening to music— especially live. Sometimes it’s popular musicians with big names, more often it’s people who just love music. They don’t neccesarily make a living from it or gather

fans, but to these people not making music is a kind of death. I was recently at a show with a variety of performers each with a different sound. The one similarity among them was that they exposed their souls with their music. It’s been said, “Perhaps the best mark of personal heroism is not astounding courage or accomplishments, but authentic self-expression...” While, these locals weaved soul in to each note and lyric, some big musicians miss depth in their performances simply because performing regularly alleviates the vulnerability that often exposes souls. What is your story; meaning what are your beliefs, assumptions, expectations, desires, memories, wants, relationships, friends, childhood experiences, and how does it all fit together? What we tell ourselves and repeat aloud to others becomes our reality, becomes the glasses through which we see the world, defines our decisions, and becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Can you examine the stories you tell the world and yourself, discerning where there is truth and conversly falsity? Can you open to what your life is and the endless possibilities of what it could be? Like many valuable exercises, this will be ongoing. In part because we miss things the first, or even 100th, time around. But also because we change constantly. I’d like to mention one caveat that I am quite familiar with, which is the desire to bypass the parts we don’t like within the picture. There is a cultural ideal of seeing only the positive or looking at things from a spiritual paradigm. While that can be admirable, this method often overlooks angles that are dictating fundamental life experiences including our emotional needs. In a world of pain, this positive or spiritual bypass is a constant temptation. Yet, it can be a detour on the path to genuine happiness and wholeness. In our efforts to leapfrog to something better, we can avoid a crucial part. The writer Parker Palmer puts it “I deny my inner darkness, giving it more power over me, or I project it onto other people, creating ‘enemies’ where none exist.” While there is no need to dwell on these facets, recognizing their existence opens us to releasing them. Palmer also says “Wholeness does not mean perfection: it means embracing brokenness as an integral part of life.” As I see it in this moment, happiness and wholeness are not about being all smiles and laughter. Instead, they are a deeprooted sense of well-being that sustains through feelings of sadness, hurt, anger, joy, and circumstances that overwhelm. I’ve asked a lot of questions and here are a few more; what lights up both your soul and your ego? What unifies your emotions and your intellect? What nourishes your body and spirit? The answers may be the foundation of your story, your chance for joy and a life of wholeness and fulfillment.

Left to Right – Caitlyn Perrault, Jacob Meehan and Caden Meehan are collecting hats and mittens for families in need.

Three local kids are working to collect hats and mittens now through December 7, 2014. This is the third time ten year old Caitlyn Perrault has helped coordinate such a drive and the first time it has been held it in New York. This year, with assis-

tance from her stepbrothers, Jacob Meehan (12 years old) and Caden Meehan (9 years old), they are collecting new hats and mittens in an effort to keep local Saratoga County children warm. Sizes for hats and mittens range from toddlers to teenagers. They are also accepting new hats, scarves and gloves for adults. Donations will be given to the Franklin Community Center, located in downtown Saratoga Springs. The Center provides basic necessities and services to over 6,000 individuals annually and has been helping the community for over 30 years. Hats and mittens will also be given to the Stillwater Food Pantry. Drop boxes are located at the following locations now through December 7: Healthy Living Market and Café at the Wilton Mall, the YMCA in Wilton (20 Old Gick Road) and the YMCA in Saratoga Springs (290 West Avenue). Organizations or business interested in hosting their own drive or having a drop box are asked to contact Trish Perrault at marketing68@aol.com.

The presenter, Oded Ben-Ami, refers to his teachings as "Practical Spirituality.” They are teachings that bring out the (usually unseen) spiritual aspect, which is an integral part of everything worldly. These teachings allow us to discover infinite depth in the mundane and realize that it is our own seeking which takes us away from that which we hope to find. Oded Ben-Ami is a Spiritual Teacher and a Motivational Speaker. After experiencing a powerful spiritual awakening, Oded's new insights led him to drop a lifelong career as a professional musician and begin to share the insights that he was given so that others can know true freedom for themselves. Oded's time is devoted to sharing his insights on his website www.you-can-be-free.com/teachings, giving personal consultations, teaching classes, and giving public talks. Past and present classes include the American Cancer Society, Niskayuna and Colonie Senior Centers, Soluna Yoga and private classes. The Second Annual Albany Peace Project scheduled To Begin January 2015 Do you ever watch the news and feel discouraged? Do you often feel stressed and trapped with life’s challenges? If so, you may want to participate in the The Albany Peace Project that not only empowers people to cope more effectively with their own personal stressors, but may also simultaneously positively impact Albany, NY. The Albany Peace Project is a 10 year research study designed to determine if an organized group of trained meditators creating a "coherent state" in their bodies and then focusing peaceful intention outwardly can measurably reduce local violence. The hypothesis is that focused peaceful intention has real world impact, and dozens of prior research studies suggest it as well. The Albany Peace Project team is gathering evidence to determine if this approach can positively impact our local community. Each day in January 2015, meditations will be emailed to over 1000 participants that will lead them into a state of peaceful coherence, and Karin Reinhold, professor of Mathematics at SUNY Albany, will review the violent crime data of the Albany Police Department to determine if the positive intentions made a measurable impact. This year The Albany Peace Project is collaborating with the Institute of HeartMath, an internationally recognized nonprofit research and education organization dedicated to helping people reduce stress, self-regulate emotions and build energy and resilience to live more healthy, happy lives. The Albany Peace Project will offer daily meditations that include the Institute of HeartMath’s evidence based technique, the Heart Lock-In® which reliably leads participants’ nervous systems into a state known as “coherence”. Personal coherence, refers to the synchronization of the physical, mental and emotional systems. It can be measured by heartrhythm patterns: The more balanced and smooth they are, the more in sync, or coherent, we are. Stress levels recede, energy levels increase a state of optimal clarity, perception and performance emerges. The founder of the Albany Peace Project is Bethany Gonyea, a biofeedback specialist who has observed the power of focused intention inside the body for over twenty years through her biofeedback practice. Biofeedback therapy involves training patients to control physiological processes such as muscle tension, blood pressure, or heart rate. These processes usually occur involuntarily, however, patients who receive training can learn how to manipulate them at will to treat chronic pain, urinary incontinence, high blood pressure, tension headache, and migraine headache.

Gonyea organized The Albany Peace Project because she is passionate about teaching people how to garner the power of their own mind to create positive change, both for themselves and othHealing Springs I #77 December, 2014—January, 2015

ers. “Once people experience the healing power of their own harnessed intention, a growing confidence pervades their entire lives, and they eventually take on greater challenges. The Albany Peace Project is basing it’s protocol on a growing body of evidence that suggests these same intentional skills that cause positive change inside the body may have an impact outside of the body as well. Simply put…What we observe, we disturb.” The Albany Peace Project needs your help! Prior research suggests when greater numbers of people participate in this work, there is a greater measurable impact, so many more participants are needed. Sign up to participate at home in this historic opportunity now at: http://albanypeaceproject.com/join-us/. Free instructional videos will be emailed to you, or you could participate in community gatherings. Feel great while positively impacting the world. It is a win-win!

Saratoga PLAN receives state awards to permanently protect two Saratoga County Farms Saratoga PLAN is the recipient of grant awards from the state Farmland Protection Implementation Program for the conservation of two Saratoga County farms located in the towns of Stillwater and Ballston. The awards, announced earlier this week by Governor Andrew Cuomo, are part of a $17.6 million program to protect 6,440 acres of farmland across 12 counties in New York State. This was the first round of state agricultural protection grants awarded in six years. The grants will be used to purchase and permanently retire development rights on the two farms, ensuring that their fertile fields will be available for farming for future generations.

“The state funding is instrumental to our ability to undertake these farmland conservation projects, which provide many longterm benefits to the community,” said Maria Trabka, Saratoga PLAN Executive Director. “The conservation of the Wm. H. Buckley Farm and Cocozzo Farm not only protects vital natural resources, but enhances the region’s economic strength. NYS farms can only feed 30% of its population now, and we’re losing farms at a rate of two per week. Protecting these two farms will ensure a secure source of locally produced food for the future, in the fastest growing county in NYS.” Additional funding partners for the conservation of this farm are the Open Space Institute, contributing $260,000 and the Town of Stillwater, contributing an additional $22,000 towards this project. Saratoga PLAN, which stands for preserving land and nature, is a nonprofit land trust that works to preserve the rural character, natural habitats and scenic beauty of Saratoga County so that these irreplaceable assets are accessible to all and survive for future generations. What Is ANXIETY, and How Can You Tame It? by Donna Bird, LCSW tress vs Anxiety – Stress develops when forces from the world affect us in negative ways. Like life changes, negative and positive events and daily challenges. Many of us can deal with those things without experiencing long-term negative effects. People with Anxiety Disorders, like General Anxiety Disorder (GAD), experience constant physical and emotional affects on a regular daily basis. They worry about every day problems like: their job; money; family; health; household chores; their car; appointments; daily details, etc. They live in perpetual fear. GAD affects about 6.8 million Americans. It also affects twice as many women as men. Some possible physical symptoms of Anxiety are: headaches; heart palpitations; colon spasms, diarrhea/constipation; dry mouth; shallow breathing; frequent urination; sexual problems; aches and pains; trembling of the body (inside or outside); feeling “on edge”, impatient or irritable; poor concentration; forgetfulness; sleep problems; hyper vigilance, etc. People with anxiety want to be “in charge” of their environments to reduce the fear they experience. Anxiety feels like a constant turbulent river running inside.

S

Heredity and anxiety disorders: Research shows that anxiety disorders run in families. If you think about your relatives, some may have behaviors that are annoying and unexplained, until you become aware that the causes of their overreactions may be due to the fact that they live in fear. Many people who are: perfectionist types; abuse drugs/alcohol; seem controlling or angry; worry excessively; are shy or aggressive; restrict life; fear rejection; don’t feel safe; etc. may suffer from anxiety.

Brain chemistry and anxiety disorders:

Because symptoms of anxiety disorders are often relieved by medications that alter levels of chemicals in the brain, scientists believe that brain chemistry appears to play a role in the onset of When I work with people with anxiety, I help them to understand anxiety disorders. Personality and anxiety disorders:

The Victim (promotes depression) sometimes feels helpless or hopeless; tells you that you’re not progressing; believes there is something defective about you; perceives insurmountable obstacles to your success; believes nothing will ever change.

Researchers believe that personality may play a role in the development of an anxiety disorder, noting that people who have low self-esteem and poor coping skills may be more prone. If a person has an “easy going” temperament instead of an intense one, they will be able to deal with life in a calmer, more manageable way.

Life experiences and anxiety disorders:

The Perfectionist: (promotes chronic stress & burnout) nags you to “do better” because your effort is not enough; hounds you to work harder, faster, longer, to be more productive; wants you to be the best; intolerant of mistakes/setbacks; pushes you into exhaustion and burnout over time.

Sometimes people with anxiety have experienced trauma and need additional/alternative treatment. Talk therapy mostly addresses only the right side of the brain, so healing can be a lengthy process, and sometimes doesn’t integrate the trauma. Whereas, therapies such as Hypnosis, interacts with the subconscious mind, and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) address both hemispheres of the brain, so healing trauma is usually much quicker. Sometimes it’s difficult to find the time for daily self-care to ease anxiety. However, you are responsible for your well-being and you deserve to be healthy. Because you have anxiety, you may have to devote more time and effort into Taming your anxiety than you thought, similar to a person with diabetes who has to take time daily to plan meals, take blood sugar readings, etc. to maintain their health. Anxiety maintenance is similar. Set your intention to make time for yourself each day. Try actually writing your breathing breaks, selfhypnosis, exercise times and nightly wind-down time into your daily planner/palm pilot, to make sure you don’t schedule over your time. You are just as important as those other appointments. Remember people with anxiety have a way of burning themselves up and out because they “drive” themselves into burnout at an early age, unconsciously. You deserve more than that. Be kind to yourself. Find time for the self-care and your anxiety will decrease. Donna Bird, LCSW, CCH is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specializing in Mind-Body Counseling and Coaching. The Enlightened Woman’s

Holiday Relationship Survival Guide

by Angela Kaufman hether your religious affiliations range from devout to nonconventional, or even nonexistent, chances are there will be some cause for gathering and celebration between November and January. In spite of positive intentions to the contrary, most of us have a fair number of holiday gathering hang ups that threaten to turn the season of gratitude and good cheer into the season of rumination over uncomfortable holiday dinner discussions that often begin with statements such as “You know your sister got another promotion….when are YOU going to get a promotion?” or the much dreaded “oh, you will be coming to Thanksgiving Dinner ALONE again this year?” Here are a few strategies to prepare you to keep you jolly and optimistic during the dark- and sometimes difficult- holiday festivities.

W

Positive Visualization

soap-opera scene in your mind, playing out in Technicolor, bringing to life your worst-case-scenario fears of what relatives might say because you are “still single” or “single again” or “still at that job” or “still have that kid who is having problems”…..relax, breathe, and remind yourself that this matinee is only playing on your mind’s movie projector because you loaded the reel yourself. Imagine yourself changing the reel to change the film to change the scene. Practice actively taking charge of the scenes in your mind on a regular basis. Whether in the start of the day or when anxiety is rising, make it an intentional active practice of switching the channel (or website etc.) to display a new scene. Let this new scene be a vivid representation of a harmonious gathering in which you are glowing, peaceful, confident, regardless of what others may say or do around you. We often fall into playing negative scenes and visualizing worst case scenarios, but we can actively change the scene by changing the image in our minds. Rather than imagining attending the depressing holiday parties without a date by your side, picture yourself smiling, radiant and having a blast with friends all evening, perhaps even meeting and dancing with a new handsome stranger before the night is over….

Choose Peace for one day If opposing forces in WWI could set aside their machine guns, step out of the trenches, shake hands and play soccer for a day in honor of the holiday spirit, why does it seem that for so many of us relationships we’ve avoided all year round have to culminate in a battle ground around the holiday dinner table?

You are already using visualization. For instance, when the thought of going home for a family gathering gives way to a I will be the first to admit that I am stubborn and can save a #77 December, 2014—January, 2015 I Healing Springs 13

Connect With the Reason For the Season Develop a personal anchor that keeps you connected to the spiritual or cultural importance of the celebration so that petty arguments and nuisances will be less likely to take hold. Whether the reason for the season is a Divine birth, welcoming of winter, or acknowledgement of survival through oppression, there is more to the months ahead than a constant reason to shop, drink, eat and be stressed…er, merry. Remember the significance of the season and make that your focus regardless of others’ foibles or faults. You may find it helpful to carry a personal token that grounds you in the purpose of the festivities and reminds you of what you intend to celebrate.

Dealing with Criticism in Disguise

Invalidating or demeaning statements made by others and candy coated to sound like questions or concerns are another source of dinner table discomfort for many women. Questions about relationship status, or career that sound more like criticism than genuine inquiry can push buttons and dredge up self doubts. To cope with this, try to hear the emotion behind the question rather than taking the question, or critique, at face value. For example, when mom asks “are you still working that job with lousy benefits, because you know your sister just got a promotion at her company…” ask yourself if perhaps what mom is really conveying is genuine fear or concern about your financial stability or well being. By responding to the emotion more rather than battling over the question, you can assuage mom’s concern by addressing the positives about your job, thanking her for her concern, and outlining the steps you have taken to grow your career via your own path. grudge like it was an interest bearing asset (sun in Cancer) although I strive to pick my battles, when feeling emotionally charged, or morally self righteous, this can be a real challenge for me. I strive to set the agenda for peace and tolerance even if it means (gasp) others won’t know that they are wrong and I am right (at least according to me!) Even in the best of cases family gatherings can bring up old tensions and hostilities, old conflicts. To help promote peace amidst a collection of loved ones who may at times trigger old emotional reaction switches, practice these tips. Look for your love alliance at family gatherings. If a few cousins or in-laws get under your skin, focus on connecting with cherished family members not often seen throughout the year. If a houseful of children whose behavior makes your blood boil threatens to dampen the holiday mood, focus on your connection to family elders. Listen to their stories and bond with the agenda of having the peaceful gathering they deserve, regardless of annoying distractions that may appear. On the other hand, if drama tends to emerge amongst adults at the dinner table, old family politics and power struggles, get immersed in the innocence and enthusiasm of younger members of your family. Focus on the loving alliances in your family. The key is to ally with love, not in shared resentment creating triangles.

Find Your Family Complaining about family tensions may seem a luxury to some who for various reasons do not have a family with whom to celebrate this season. If you are an enlightened woman on her own this year, your holiday stressors take a different form. Isolation and depression can be detrimental to even the most savvy and independent modern women. Combine seasonal darkness with a constant onslaught of old memories as another year ends, and throw in a heaping spoonful of cultural pressure to be happily in love, maternal, and smiling, and many are left with a recipe for despair. Remember that stereotypes defining “family” are just that. Whether tv and media validate it or not, we all have family in the form of our closest alliances. Although holiday marketing does not target or even acknowledge some forms of family, being on your own does not mean you have to be alone. My immediate family consists of my partner and our 6 furry children who lack opposable thumbs, nevertheless we have a family filled with love, and often amusement. If you are living alone and long to feel connected and celebrate with others, find your family. Perhaps it is your community group, your animals, your neighbors, your friends, coworkers, the people who love you unconditionally regardless of lack of shared DNA. Experience as a counselor in mental health and substance abuse recovery taught me to appreciate this. One of the happiest sights I have ever seen was the yearly holiday party held by a mental health treatment agency I worked for, serving people with severe, persistent and chronic mental illness who would have lived in institutions 10 years ago. The sight of 20 people gathered together bonded only by their shared participation in this treatment program, many of whom had no biological families around, most of whom seldom left the house throughout the year for any other reason, was amazing. These individuals would connect with each other on this occasion and for many this was the most socializing they would do for the year, but they looked forward to it. An administrator in the program once asked a client at this event how they would spend their holiday, to which the client replied “this is it.” If these otherwise disconnected and disadvantaged individuals could find family even for one day out of the year in the company of their peers, any of us can find family amongst our network. Avoid loneliness by nurturing your connections where they exist rather than focusing on the connections that no longer exist.

others whose politics, attitudes, and lifestyle I do not agree with. Already, I am calling on the power of visualization, seeing the WWI soldiers in my mind putting their weapons aside and shaking hands, reminding me through the legacy of this historic holiday truce that if they can set aside conflict and make merry, I have absolutely no excuse.

Changing your Attention can Change your Life

1

by Jennice Vilhauer, PhD ost people think that the causes of emotional pain are the things that have hurt us in life, and that in order to heal and experience real happiness we must resolve those old wounds. The reality, however, is somewhat different. We can only feel emotions, including the painful ones, in the present moment. What we feel in the present moment is determined by what we give our attention to. Nothing can hurt you unless you give your attention to it. Most people can make themselves cry in just a few minutes by simply pulling up a vivid memory of something that was at the time painful. So why would we give our attention to things that cause us pain? Most people are simply unaware that they are doing it and/or that there is any choice in the matter. Things outside your awareness are outside your control.

M

However, shifting your attention, once you are aware you can do it, is something you can have complete control over. You can choose what you want to pay attention to in life, and as a result you can choose how you want to feel. Does that sound too easy? Here is a tool that will make it even easier. There are only two types of things in life that you can pay attention to that cause you to experience emotion: things you want and things you don’t want. Every single thing that you can think of that causes any type of significant emotion can be sorted into one of those two categories. Breakups, job loss, betrayal, death of a loved one — all things you don’t want; pets, best friends, birthday parties, getting a raise — all things you do want. You will always know when you are giving your attention to things that you don’t want in life, because your emotions will tell you. Giving attention to things you don’t want generates negative emotions, while giving attention to things you do want gen-

erates positive ones. When you realize that you are experiencing a negative emotion, recognize in that moment that you are giving your attention to something unwanted and consciously choose to shift your attention to something you want instead. You will start to feel better almost immediately. This isn’t merely avoidance; it is a proactive coping strategy that can give you greater control over your life. One way to do this that we know works very well is to practice gratitude: things that you are thankful for are all wanted things in your life. One of the most self-sabotaging things that people can give their attention to is an unwanted future. Nothing in the future has actually happened, yet many people spend a good deal of their time experiencing negative emotions like anxiety, fear, and self-doubt because they are giving their attention to things that they don’t want to occur. Doing this not only robs them of their presentmoment happiness but prevents them from thinking about the positive experiences they could instead be creating in their future. Our attention is the gateway to what we experience in life. Learning to notice what you are paying attention to, and how to redirect your attention to things you want, can change not only your current experience but the life you create for yourself going forward. BTooRead ok REWILDING OUR HEARTS: Building Pathways of Compassion and Coexistence. Here, the author, a leading expert on animal behavior and emotions, provides an impassioned call to reverse global biodiversity and habitat loss by changing ourselves. In wildlife conservation work, rewilding refers to habitat restoration and the creation of corridors between preserved lands to allow declining populations to rebound. Marc Bekoff, one of the world’s most engaging animal experts and activists, here applies rewilding to human attitudes. He argues that unless we rewild ourselves, becoming profoundly reconnected to nature and fundamentally shifting our consciousness, our conservation efforts will have but limited impact. Bekoff says, “As I consider a more global and holistic perspective, I go beyond my specific areas of expertise in ethology and compassionate conservation to consider biology, psychology, sociology, philosophy, and anthropology. All of these, in fact, inform studies of animal behavior, animal minds, and conservation biology, but they are not always acknowledged. I also speak as an activist arguing for social change. Ultimately, what we need is not more information about animals, but a social movement and revolution in how we interact with animals and nature.” In the new book he discusses: • The Eight Ps of Rewilding as a social movement (being proactive, positive, persistent, patient, peaceful, practical, powerful, and passionate) • Incorporating Rewilding in one’s day-to-day • How to become reenchanted with nature — even if you live in Manhattan • How facing world problems can make our lives more meaningful and satisfying • How to stop ourselves from feeling overwhelmed when facing global crisis Bekoff shows that as we transition to acting from the inside out, our efforts become powerfully proactive, moving beyond simply reacting to current crises. Ultimately, REWILDING OUR HEARTS invites readers to become reenchanted with the world and, by dissolving false boundaries, to truly connect with both nature and themselves. Marc Bekoff is professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has worked alongside leading writers and activists including Jane Goodall, Peter Singer, and PETA cofounder Ingrid Newkirk. He lives in Boulder, CO.

healing practice by Wendy Ball hen I was in Peru this summer I spent the best part of two weeks scrambling up mountain trails after the sturdy and nimble footed Quero shamans who were part of our company, participating daily in ceremony which was an integral part of their lifestyle. They live in intimate connection with nature: with the mountains, with the sky, with the earth. They use their breath to move the energy of prayer into stones, flowers, leaves - anything that can be held in their hand and worked into prayer bundles that hold their gratefulness. The energy that arises from these "despacho" ceremonies is palpable and ecstatic. I began to understand how these people perceived the mountains, the clouds, the earth, as having consciousness and to experience a sense of intimate relationship with nature, of being held. To experience this in the boundless beauty of Peruvian mountain landscapes triggered deep gratefulness as a natural response of my soul. How could one resist feeling grateful, for the miracle of human embodied life. A natural response, yes, but a response that was nurtured daily by practice.

Every time I open and close sacred space I both call in and say thank you: to the directions, to the great archetypal energies that surround, support, and inform us, to the planet, Gaia, the great earth mother, to the sky, moon, stars, spirit, that overlight and guide us. “Calling in” acknowledges the potential of being in relationship. I am not alone. Gratefulness is my hearts response: Thank you thank you thank you. Altars are another way of coming into relationship with something or someone in a special way, to honor, to say thank you. Humans have been making altars since the dawn of time. They have been collecting bits and pieces of things, or images, or amulets, or messages, and placing them with intention in a designated place in order to honor, to appease, to channel communication. Children do this instinctively. They collect things that feel special to them and make little piles of them or put them in places that feel special to them. Many of us grew up in homes that had a photo corner of important relatives. My mother has an ancestor wall, a wall that served as a photo gallery of relatives both dead and alive, including a beloved pet. Now I smile and say thank you when I pass that wall. As a Canadian I was inspired to experience the dedication and enthusiasm with which Americans celebrate their Thanksgiving holiday. It was explained to me that in this "melting pot" cultural environment it is the one holiday everyone can celebrate together. This holiday is a unifier. We have the infrastructure for prac-

by Marion Bergan Irwin he Webster Dictionary defines aura as a “gentle breeze”, “an invisible breath or emanation”. Donna Eden, the author of the Best Selling book “Energy Medicine” comments that, “Like the Earth’s atmosphere, the aura surrounds and envelops the body. It is the body’s outermost energy system, composed of seven layers or “nested auric fields” (think of Russian dolls) and seven concentric bands from the bottom to the top of the body. Each layer and each band serves a different function— but ultimately the aura acts as: 1) a filter to protect the body from toxic or disruptive energies, and 2) an antenna bringing in beneficial energies… The proper functioning of the aura greatly impacts physical, emotional, and spiritual health.” In other words, as reflected by Donna Eden”your aua is your body’s body guard”

Eden Energy Medicine is the study of the nine subtle energy systems in the human body. They are the Aura, Chakras, Meridians, the Five Rhythms, the Electrics, Basic Grid, Celtic Weave, Triple Warmer, and the Radiant Circuits. As an acupuncturist, I was aware of the other energy systems but worked solely with the Meridian system. We were taught about the life force Qi (pronounced chee) but not about the aura. Over the 12 years of practicing acupuncture I became increasingly aware of the work Donna Eden was doing. Three years ago, quite by chance, I was invited to study her work and the journey began. When the first class started I had a vague idea of what an aura was: the area surrounding the body that is sometimes depicted in paintings of saints as a radiant halo. More than that was a mystery.

Eden Energy Medicine defines the functions of the aura: • “The aura protects you from the physical, emotional, and psychic energies of your environment by screening harmful energies (it acts as a space suit or lightening rod). • The aura connects you to nourishing energies in your environment (it acts as an antenna or bridge). • The aura bridges these energies to the chakras and other energy centers (which further process them, often resulting in nerve, hormonal, vascular, and other activity in the physical body). • The aura sends signals into your environment that communicate information about you and that attract specific types of energy to you. • The aura holds a set of interrelated fields that are the blueprints for your physical body, your emotions, your awareness, your relationships, and your development.”

With these basics I had a conceptual idea of how an aura functioned in our lives, but no practical, understanding. I have been totally amazed that in clinical practice what one needs to learn tends to walk through the door in the form of clients presenting with those very issues. There was a lot to learn and true to form, the perfect clients presented to teach me about the aura. There is one case in particular I thought you might find interesting, as it brought the aura to life for me and hopefully will do the same for you. My third year of clinical training involved working with clients while a mentor watched via Skype. In one particular session I was working with someone who struggled with speaking up for himself and felt that people didn’t pay attention to him. Almost feeling invisible in certain respects. In the past I had considered working with his aura, but had always deferred to the meridians to address physical symptoms. During this session, my mentor saw that his aura was “thin and weak” and suggested doing Figure 8’s to strengthen it. Figure 8?s are a fundamental pattern which our energetic bodies are based upon. One of the ways of maintaining the health of the aura is to trace Figure 8?s large and small all over the body. I spent 45 minutes weaving Figure 8?s in every way imaginable. I have to confess, at the time, I thought it was a bit over the top. However, as he later reported, when he returned home his family noticed a distinctly stronger presence, and had a bit of an adjustment to accommodate his new energy. Part of my self-care assignment for him was to continue doing Figure 8?s in the aura on a daily basis. Roughly six months after this session, he reported that all the problematic life issues he had been experiencing had magically resolved themselves. I was stunned; lesson learned!

www.saratogaintegrativepractitioners.com guard, it will filter out energies that are detrimental, and bring supportive, nourishing energy to us. An aura that is “thin and weak” will allow aggressive events to penetrate our lives, while a strong aura will naturally align us with circumstances and events that support our well-being and highest potential. In my client’s case, we see the aura’s intelligence at work resolving unsatisfying life circumstances. After intensive efforts to rebuild the integrity of his aura, it began to work its silent magic to bring about the energetic changes needed to have him be more present and assertive in his life. This on its own would contribute to significant relational changes, but his aura was still on the job not only filtering out aggressive energy in all areas of his life, but also pulling in unforeseen circumstances that significantly improved the quality of his life and harmony experienced in his relationships. What I learned from this is just how powerful and intelligent the aura is in helping to create happy, fulfilling lives and relationships. If we extend this function just a bit further, isn’t it possible the aura functions as part of our spiritual anatomy, as we see depicted in the artistry of our saints? With some work we too have the potential to have a radiant halo! After all, isn’t that our highest calling? What is intuition? How can I tap into it? by Allison Petroski everal years ago, after training in an energy modality called ThetaHealing, I was taught how to scan a person’s body and give a reading of the chakras and energy. After several months of using this method, my readings opened up, and I found that through my natural love of writing, I was able to receive intuitive messages about a person when I wrote them out. When I do the automatic writing, all I need is someone’s name, and I connect with Higher Self consciousness, and detailed information comes through on the person I am reading, providing guidance and clarity on all of life’s mysteries- big or small. This column is a sample the higher perspectives that are available to us all. If you would like the opportunity to recieve a reading, write in with questions about your personal experiences and we will print it.

S

Reading.... Thank you for this interaction today. We are grateful for the opportunity to communicate with you all. It is important for you to know, that although you may believe that you are the one asking questions, and receiving information, or that you are the one

benefiting from the perspective of Higher Self Consciousness, in truth, We from Higher Self Consciousness are learning and expanding with you, through these interactions. For every time there is a shift in consciousness, no matter how small or individual the shift, it sets a wake across the totality of Universal Consciousness. Every opportunity to tap into a higher awareness is a moment of expansion. For Us, and for you- because there is no real separation between the two. So, thank you, for your willingness to be part of the expanding consciousness. We say this for you to acknowledge and own your personal role in spiritual awakening- you are not just the receivers of higher awareness, you are the activators of it. This is a partnership, a co-creation. The non-physical realm and the physical realm are working together for this spiritual awakening- do not discredit yourselves and think that you are less powerful, less insightful, “less” in any way. The only separation between you and Us, Us being Higher Self Consciousness, is that you believe yourself to be less than you are. You are an aspect of Source Energy, God, The Universe- the title makes no difference. We in the non-physical know what We are, so there is no separation. That knowing is available to you as well.

Intuition is this knowing. It is the allowing of your natural connection to Source. Yes, it can be developed in ways that allow some to perform unique talents of multi-dimensional/ extra-sensory communications- but that is a more advanced variation of an innate ability. intuition. Everyone has intuition- and uses it on a daily basis. It is such a natural part of your life, that you have forgotten the magic and mystery of it. You may have played it down with words such as “coincidence,” or resorted to beliefs that rationalize certain events. Human kind has minimized intuition because it has not been captured or confined by scientific data or measurements. Intuition is the way that you and Source communicate with one another; there is no way to measure that, because it is limitless, infinite- and purely unique from one person to the next. If you wish to reconnect with your intuition, to communicate with Source, begin to bring back the moments of awe and wonder in your life. Start looking at your life with the wonderment of Source- when you look at a flower, take a moment to BE with it. Explore it with all of your senses. Feel it inside of you, see it’s beauty with the eyes of a child; hear itopen all of yourself up to the experience- be fully present with the flower. This is a powerful meditation practice, as well as a way to realign with the fascination and curiosity that is your natural state. If you wish to be a channel for Source, you must put

yourself in the frequency of Source. When you focus your attention on the ramblings of the ego/ personality, then your experience will reflect those uncertainties. If you wish to communicate and be guided by Source, through intuition, then you must begin to know yourself as that. This is a practice, learned as layers are pulled back and more space revealed- so be gentle with yourself. You are your most direct route to the divine, so honor how you show up. Feel what you must feel, accept it with love and compassion. There have been lifetimes of separation and self-depreciating beliefs that must be cleared and replaced. Every realization, every clearing, opens up space for you to refocus your alignment with Source, to replace the fear with love and compassion. Intuition guides all of this. It is so much an active part of you already that you don’t even acknowledge it’s presence. To hear it more clearly, We invite you to direct your focus to your connection with Source- with the light and love that you are, which is your natural state. Thank you for communicating with Us today. We are grateful for your openness. Many blessings. Allison Petroski is an intuitive, with a strong background in the healing arts, providing messages of empowerment through personalized written intuitive readings for people. Her intention is to infuse more compassion and heart based consciousness into the world, through her work with intuition. Reasons To Go Nuts for Nutmeg by Sarah Lobisco h…the sweet smells of the holiday season! What is your favorite sweet-smelling spice? Many of my clients have cinnamon, ginger, or that amazing golden hero, turmeric at the top of their lists. These are all beneficial and perfect for spicing up holiday treats! They all possess potent compounds that can support the immune system and may decrease inflammation. This month, I got the opportunity to try my newest sidekick essential oil. I started diffusing it and smelling it daily. It had me at “Yummo!” So, the nerd that I am, I started my journey into research articles with PubMed and Dr. Google (Scholar). I now have some validation for my fondness of this essential oil and I am eager to learn more as natural medicine gets its rightful place in research studies.

A

Here are the 10 reasons why you should consider adding nutmeg to “spice up” your life (you can access the full abstracts on my website):

1. It Is Promising for Brain Support Several studies have demonstrated that nutmeg may have an ability to modulate the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme which is thought to be involved with memory. The first abstract demonstrated the most activity with an extract of nutmeg on this enzyme verses the second comparison study. This may be due to the first study’s methods of isolation and analysis of various compounds in nutmeg.

2. For Healthy Mood Support…Of Mood & Mice In an old mice study which studied constituents in nutmeg, myristicin had an effect of increasing the concentration of the brain happy amino acid, 5-hydorxyytrupatamine (a precursor to serotonin). Furthermore, other components appeared to cause nervous system stimulation.

Nutmeg and its active component, myristicin, show evidence of central monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibition by their ability to lower the convulsive dose of intravenous tryptamine in mice and to increase rat brain 5-hydroxytryptamine concentrations. They also show some ability to antagonize reserpine-induced ptosis of the eyelids. Myristicin is chemically unique as a nitrogen-free MAO inhibitor. Although its potency in this respect is not comparable to some of the more potent inhibitors such as tranylHealing Springs I #77 December, 2014—January, 2015

cypromine and iproniazid, it seems quite adequate when compared to its low toxicity. Other volatile components of nutmeg such as borneol, geraniol and safrole, do not show tryptamine potentiation, although some appear to cause C.N.S. stimulation in high doses. Further study is recommended for more direct evidence of nutmeg and myristicin as enzyme inhibitors and for their utility as anti-depressant drugs.

3. It May Help Mitochondria Revive!

Reclaim Your Wild Soul a workshop

Our mitochondria are known as “cellular powerhouses” for energy production in our bodies. This abstract aimed to study the molecular mechanisms underlying the activity of a component in nutmeg, myristicin. It demonstrated that this component could modulate gene expression in human leukemia cells. The gene expression profile revealed an overall down- regulation of DNA damage response genes after exposure to myristicin. Myristicin, an allylbenzene, is a major active component of various spices, such as nutmeg and cinnamon, plants from the Umbelliferae family or in some essential oils, such as oils of clove or marjoram. Human exposure to myristicin is low but widespread due to consumption of these spices and essential oils, added to food (e.g. cola drinks) or in traditional medicine. Occasionally high dose exposure occurs, leading to various clinical symptoms, however the molecular mechanisms underlying them are unknown. Our previous studies revealed that myristicin is not genotoxic and yet presented apoptotic activity. Therefore, in this work we assessed the apoptotic mechanisms induced by myristicin in human leukaemia cells. In order to gain further insight on the potential of myristicin to modulate gene expression we also analysed alterations in expression of 84 genes associated with the DNA damage response pathway. The results obtained show that myristicin can induce apoptosis as characterised by alterations in the mitochondrial membrane potential, cytochrome c release, caspase-3 activation, PARP-cleavage and DNA fragmentation. The gene expression profile revealed an overall down regulation of DNA damage response genes after exposure to myristicin, with significant under-expression of genes associated with nucleotide excision repair (ERCC1), double strand break repair (RAD50, RAD51) and DNA damage signalling (ATM) and stress response (GADD45A, GADD45G). On the whole, we demonstrate that myristicin can alter mitochondrial membrane function, induce apoptosis and modulate gene expression in human leukaemia K562 cells. This study provides further detail on the molecular mechanisms underlying the biological activity of myristicin.

4. It’s All About the Phenols, Baby

Before there was language, humans interacted with the world quite differently. In this workshop we will open up to our wild self through the rhythm of the drum and modern shamanic journeys to facilitate a new and ancient way of being in the world, We will discuss the importance of and ways to partner with the earth who, as our elder, has much wisdom and healing to share.

Oh, poor nutmeg! It has been way under looked for its ability to scavenge free radicals which are associated with cellular damage. In a menthol extract, nutmeg had a lot of antioxidant power. Nutmeg demonstrated activity as a free radical scavenger, an antioxidant capacity for peroxyl and hydroxyl radical, and some phenolic activity. (Phenols have immune modulating properties.) One drawback in this study was that the extraction method could have altered the active constituents activity. #77 December, 2014—January, 2015 I Healing Springs

5. For Supporting Healthy Teeth In petri dishes, nutmeg inhibited nasty cavity-forming bacteria. The occurrence of dental caries is mainly associated with oral pathogens, especially cariogenic Streptococcus mutans. Preliminary antibacterial screening revealed that the extract of Myristica fragrans, widely cultivated for the spice and flavor of foods, possessed strong inhibitory activity against S. mutans.

6. Liver Support In a study with our rodent friends, myristicin suppressed inflammatory markers and showed evidence that it may protect liver cells from damage caused by lipopolyscarrarides (LPS) plus dgalactosamine. (Yuck, I dislike the damaging microbial LPS plus sugar toxin test, but it must be done!) To evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of spices, 21 different spices were fed to rats with liver damage caused by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) plus d-galactosamine (D-GalN). As assessed by plasma aminotranferase activities, nutmeg showed the most potent hepatoprotective activity. Bioassay-guided isolation of the active compound from nutmeg was carried out in mice by a single oral administration of the respective fractions. Myristicin, one of the major essential oils of nutmeg, was found to possess extraordinarily potent hepatoprotective activity. Myristicin markedly suppressed LPS/D-GalN-induced enhancement of serum TNF-? concentrations and hepatic DNA fragmentation in mice. These findings suggest that the hepatoprotective activity of myristicin might be, at least in part, due to the inhibition of TNF? release from macrophages. However, further studies are needed to elucidate the hepatoprotective mechanism(s) of myristicin.

7. For That Frisky Feeling Speaking of mice, it seems nutmeg made these critters a little frisky when combined with clove. This was according to researchers who were assigned this interesting research topic and noted the mice’s behavior. Background: Spices are considered as sexual invigorators in the Unani System of Medicine. In order to explore the sexual function improving effect of Myristica fragrans Houtt. (nutmeg) and Syzygium aromaticum (L) Merr. & Perry. (clove) an experimental study was conducted in normal male mice.

8. It may help with Poop According to an old case study in the British Medical Journal, nutmeg helped a patient who was having diarrhea (the British say “diarrhoea”) related to various medical issues. This was from an old case report in 1975! In a patient with medullary carcinoma of the thyroid with pulmonary metastases who presented with diarrhoea and steatorrhoea large amounts of prostaglandin-like material were present in peripheral blood, and some was extracted from the tumour. The diarrhoea which persisted after thyroidectomy responded to treatment with nutmeg. 28 Healing Springs I #77 December, 2014—January,

9. It May Help Your Paw Inflammation and Sticky Blood Action One study showed that nutmeg has action on enzymes involved in inflammatory pathways using mice subjects. It helped with their little paw-induced inflammation. The chloroform extract of nutmeg has been evaluated for antiinflammatory, analgesic and antithrombotic activities in rodents. The extract inhibited the carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema, produced a reduction in writhings induced by acetic acid in mice and offered protection against thrombosis induced by ADP/adrenaline mixture in mice.

10. It’s Darn Safe As Directed So, some people have heard of “nutmeg toxicity”. I searched for this and found only one fatal case that was ASSOCIATED with nutmeg overdose which was in 2001. MAJOR CAVEAT to this finding-the fatality was associated with a combination of nutmeg and flunitrazepam, a benzodiazepine. So was it the myristicin in nutmeg or the drug? The study reports it was likely due to a combination. However, keep in mind that the British Medical Journal reported the following in 2012: “Receiving hypnotic prescriptions was associated with greater than threefold increased hazards of death even when prescribed <18 pills/year. This association held in separate analyses for several commonly used hypnotics and for newer shorter-acting drugs. Control of selective prescription of hypnotics for patients in poor health did not explain the observed excess mortality.” So, what do you think? Are you going to add some variety to your spice and oil cabinet now? Healing with Meaning & Purpose by Ann Carey Tobin, MD ecently I have taken advantage of some long commutes to listen to a book on tape, one loaned to me by a friend “only” four months ago. Not only am I relieved that she may get this book back within the year, but I have gained a useful addition to my bibliotherapy library. Lissa Rankin, M.D. is yet another physician who experienced spectacular burn out, and eventually healed herself by attending to her inner healer. For her this necessitated leaving medicine, liquidating all assets, and moving to the country with her husband and young daughter. Surrounded by natural beauty she cared for herself, her family, and passionately pursued her painting hobby. Two years later she felt called to return to her profession, and found that her healing continued when she took her place in the supportive environment of an Integrative medicine practice. Dr. Rankin also began to blog, where she found her “tribe” of the like-minded, and grew into the conviction that the mind is the key to optimizing health and wellness. Inspired, and now driven, she delved into the scientific research to shed light on the mind-body relationship, and validate her theory. The result is her book, ‘Mind Over Medicine, Scientific Proof That You Can Heal Yourself.’

R

Dr. Rankin discusses the science behind the power of thoughts and emotions, and details how stress, in its many forms, affect real changes in our body. And, of course, she provides advice on how to harness the mind to benefit our mind, body and spirit. Her research and insight resonates with me as an individual, and as a physician. I have known for a long time that fear frequently keeps my patients from embracing the life changes required to open a space for deep and lasting healing. Dr. Rankin suggests engaging in a dialogue with your body and asking it “what do you need to heal?” A honest discussion may provide simple and

common sense feedback: eat whole foods, exercise, get more rest, manage stress, nurture relationships; but, the conversation is probably not complete without also addressing the role of meaning and purpose in your life. Finding meaning and purpose in one’s life is a keystone to thriving as a human being. It is tempting to define this in the terms of roles–assigned, acquired, or simply fallen into: parent, professional, artist, etc. And, while those roles often define and serve us in some measure, fulfillment of your meaning and purpose– a process that holds the promise of healing, may involve an element of risk and change–scary change. It means a commitment to engaging in contemplative, honest conversations with your authentic self; via meditation, prayer, quiet time, journaling, or other copacetic avenues. And, for many of us, it is an evolutionary process, taking place over time and in phases. As I tell my patients: baby steps are just fine. We can not overestimate, though, the healing power of this inner journey, and of making the difficult decisions to ultimately follow our soul’s purpose. As Mary Oliver invites us to ponder: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” This is an invitation to take the journey inwards, to optimize your health and wellness, and to age gracefully. Be well. Ann Carey Tobin, M.D., FAAFP, is a board certified family physician. Her integrative medicine consultation practice, Partners in Healing, is located in Delmar. She can be reached at 518.506.6303, by e-mail at atobin.pih@gmail.com, or visit www.partnersinhealing.info

fully combined and integrated with the alternative methods.

Q

It is important to make responsible choices and to reflect deeply on what resonates with you. Pursue health options that appreciate the innate power and wisdom of your body, mind and spirit, ones that acknowledge the divine design of the human being. If you follow your truth and support your health by choosing alternatives that have this orientation, the return may well exceed the resources used. You may stay stronger and healthier and avoid extensive medical costs in the future.

Ask the ractitioner

I have been under a doctor's care for a condition that is covered by my health insurance, even though I would prefer to have used alternative methods, but the cost is always a factor. What are your opinions about one versus the other, or even combining the two?

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell Alternatives do not mean that one needs to take one method over another, or that one is better than another, although I often find my soap box sturdily supports that latter notion. When you have need of western medicine, you should certainly avail yourself of their skills and make good use of the insurance coverage. The problem arises when the western approach falls short of the ability to provide supportive energies to your healing, or in some cases, involves more negative consequences than the apparent relief that is offered in the short term. Alternatives can often fill a gap where traditional therapeutics may only offer palliative or suppressive measures, which, when viewed over the long term, do more damage than good. The real value can only be measured in the quality of the health that you desire. If health is to be viewed only in economic terms, then you are outside the realm of my ability to offer you an explanation of why alternative therapies are cost effective in the long term. If you measure health by the long term quality of your living life fully, then you can use traditional western approaches when they are appropriate and alternative ones when they fit your long term desires, or combine the two when that feels appropriate. Jerome M Pindell uses Homeopathy, Hypnosis, Jin Shin Jyutsu and spiritual counseling to assist his clients. He is a poet whose first book: Training Tracks, poems by implosion, is available through Amazon. He has offices in Clifton Park, Niskayuna, and NYC. He can be reached @ 518-374-5492 or his web site jp@jeromepindell.com

Homeopathy; Claudia Ascione We are living in a time where there are many rich options for optimizing health through the thoughtful inclusion of complements to allopathic medical approaches. Although not always covered by insurance, these options with a focus on prevention and immune support are prudent additions for wellness. The traditional Western medical approaches can and should be thought30 Healing Springs I #77 December, 2014—January,

Allopathic and alternative methods are based on different belief paradigms. Traditional allopathic approaches have a materialistic orientation with an emphasis on the physical body. Alternative or complementary approaches such as homeopathy and energy treatments such as Jin Shin Jyutsu appreciate the existence of the emotional, spiritual, and subtle, non-physical aspects as well as the physical.

Claudia Ascione, MA. MS. CH. is a practitioner in the healing arts of homeopathy , spiritual counsel, hypnosis, regression and Jin Shin Jyutsu. She uses a deeply intuitive and spiritual approach to bring awareness and clarity to healing concerns. She offers private sessions in Niskayuna, Manhattan and Ardsley, NY. Acupuncture; Gregg St Clair When I started practicing acupuncture in 1998, it was not covered by any insurance and no one expected it to be. That didn’t prevent me from having a full booming practice where everyone paid out of their own pocket for care. The typical patients I see have tried everything from drugs to surgery with western medicine and were not getting the results they wished so were actively seeking out alternatives for relief. Many have heard of acupuncture’s success with pain and were desperate for help so usually money wasn’t an issue. Today, I must admit everything has changed. Every patient that calls now wants to know if acupuncture is covered, and many aren’t willing to pay for it if not. I think the problems with the economy in 2005 and 2008, uncertainty over the new national health care plans, plus huge gas price increases and inflation have created fear in the marketplace so people have checked their spending. Of course money is an issue, but my experience is we pay for what we value and most people that are motivated always find a way to come in. The question is; what do you value? Unfortunately when money is an issue, people often put their health care last. The house, car and entertainment come first, but from my perspective, you can’t afford not to put your health first. If you would prefer using alternative methods, you have to find a way to make it work. I once had a woman come to me and flat out said, “I can’t afford to pay you but I know I need to be here. I can paint, or babysit or mow your lawn in payment.” This is exactly the type of patient prac2015

titioners love to work with because they are motivated to do the work and not looking to merely be fixed. I have never turned any one away because of money and always found a way to work it out. If money is an issue, talk to your health care provider and you might be surprised. Perhaps you could get a discount or establish a payment plan. The good news is more insurance companies are starting to reimburse for acupuncture. I am a provider for Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield and they have fantastic benefits. I’m also a provider for CDPHP but they cover almost nothing (though supposedly that will change in the future). Call your insurance company and find out, the more demand they see the more it will change in the future. The majority of my patients though, pay out of pocket, and I’ve been seeing them for years usually one time a month for prevention, maintenance and overall well being. Don’t hesitate to combine the traditional and alternative therapies. Most of my patients are also using western medicine for their health, though many are looking for ways to make natural therapies their first line of defense. If you are not getting your needs met with your current health care and suffering physically or mentally, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to seek help. And that’s why we’re here. Wild Geese You do not have to be good. You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting. You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves. Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. Meanwhile the world goes on. Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain are moving across the landscapes, over the prairies and the deep trees, the mountains and the rivers. Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air, are heading home again. Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting over and over announcing your place in the family of things.
