Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you Journaling has always been a part of my life, as far as I remember. Most of what is written stays in the journals, never to be seen again. Uncharacteristically, this morning I read an entry written only 6 days ago. “...doing things is not what creates us into something. That we already are something is what allows us to create.” The simple profundity of that statement struck me deeply this morning, making me question why I hadn’t written a book proposal based on it. Not only had I not written a proposal, or a short article, I hadn’t even remembered it. That entry was still in my mind as I arrived at the barn. It was 15 degrees and the sun was starting to go down. Instead of interrupting the lesson taking place in the indoor, I went for a walk with Tom in his 5-acre paddock. I don’t use a halter on Tom for these walks, nor do I ask him to join me. He has total freedom to come or not. While at times Tom stops to do something of interest to him and I keep moving, he consistently follows. It wasn’t always like this. In my early days, I understood riding to be the primary way humans and horses interacted. In addition, it was the human who had to take control of the time together. While I am good at presenting an outline, it goes against my nature to enforce an agenda, ask anyone that attends the meetings I facilitate. Regardless, I wanted to prove myself to the horse people around me, so I rejected my essence and required myself to be the “boss” of the horses I rode. At the time, it didn’t occur to me that the best leaders are those who by being true to themselves, inspire us to do the same. Not by “bossing” us around, but by giving us confidence in ourselves. When Tom entered my life, I knew in my heart I wanted to create a relationship that was different than the examples presented. My soul wanted to meet the horse soul to soul. Through the years, it has ultimately been a letting go over and over of falseness and pretense. Something that came up in my journal while I was going through this shift, was a fear that Tom would not choose me if given a choice. Looking back, I understand that in all my studying of others, I was searching for a foolproof way to avoid being deserted. Eventually, I stopped looking to human ‘trainers’ and began to observe how the horses spent time when people weren’t around. I found that they don’t do much more than simply stand near to one another, eating, playing, walking or grooming each other. While horses gravitate towards companionship through simply being together, people often try to create bonds with horses by asking them to do things. Most of our domesticated animals are group-orientated. Dogs run in packs. Horses move in herds. They understand belonging in a primal way humans are currently lacking. It dawned on me, that horses have a lot more to teach humans than to learn from them. With that, it felt important to reach Tom through a mutual affection while doing seemingly nothing together. At first, there were times when my fear was actualized and he would wander away. I had read techniques to address this, yet again I chose to handle it by examining what I was being while with him, rather than alter what I was doing. When the worry and sadness of not being chosen came up, I simply sat with the feelings—not trying to fix Tom’s response or myself. The experience was revealing and showed me where my beliefs and vulnerabilities collided, which gave me an opportunity to heal on many levels. With time and the continued freedom to leave, Tom now chooses my company. For his own reasons, I will not

speculate what they are, I am the one with whom he feels a sense of belonging. This puts my heart, soul and nature at ease. My ribbons are won every day when Tom meets me at the gate—literally and symbolically. Does that make me sentimental? Perhaps, and I’m at peace with that. Thinking about the shift in how I interact with Tom, and horses in general, I see it as a kind of hero’s journey. Joseph Campbell, who wrote a lot about the “hero’s journey” suggested that we each follow our bliss. There is a tendency to resist doing so, calling it selfish or waiting for better circumstances. It seems what we are truly avoiding is not the bliss, but the pure transformation our ego goes through when we follow our soul’s calling. For me, part of this journey happened through interacting with Tom. My enjoyment in him made it worth going through the discomfort that came up. In hindsight, it seems I was not only creating a friendship; I was also embracing a new way of being. With social media, we hear things in sound bites. In these often inspiring snippets, things seem black and white, while certain feelings should be banished from life—fear, anger and hurt for instance. Yet, grey seems more often true and all feelings are valuable when we have healthy relationships to them. My fear that I wouldn’t be Tom’s chosen one may seem foolish, but it told me there was something I needed to heal. Had I instantly tried to fix myself or banish the feeling rather than just acknowledge its existence, I would not have moved through it. In addition, going deeper, I understood fear inhabited me in other areas as well, regardless of the fact that I rarely felt scared. No emotion is bad, neither are they always obvious. Fear for instance, also presents as stagnancy, avoidance, keeping up appearances, or adhering to techniques that go against one’s nature. Where fear is felt, are places it is close to the surface, while it is in the hidden depths it affects behavior unknowingly. Although not infallible, writing in a journal is my way of uncovering those disguised places. Which brings me back to last week’s entry; “...doing things is not what creates us into something. That we already are something is what allows us to create.” This can most fully be embraced once we are stripped down to our essence. Why? Because our lives become genuine and meaningful when they are less about proving our worth and more about experiencing the creative force that moves each of us in our own way. Our value is already evidenced by the gift of breath. May that be enough for you to find, honor and be true to your personal nature. In harmony,

Therapeutic Touch is simple, and creates a personal connection between the healer and the patient. It can be taught to anyone, and is frequently taught to the families of patients. You do not need to "believe" in it for Therapeutic Touch to work; it has been used successfully with premature babies and patients in comas. The program will include a short history of this non-invasive energy modality, the research that supports it, its uses and practical applications.
The first program occurs on Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 6:30 pm and is entitled, “The Future of Springs of Saratoga.” This program, with presenter Aime “Trent” Millet, dips into the future prosperity the mineral springs and water resources of Saratoga could provide year-round for health and wealth. Organic Bakery “I
have always been a baker, but I started baking for others last year,” Nancy Dunn, owner of Northern Woods Bakery, said. “When I turned 50 years old, three years ago, I really started to pay more attention to the food I eat, the additives and GMO issue. I wanted to offer people something different than what many local bakeries are offering.” Northern Woods Bakery uses local and organic ingredients as much as possible, and always uses all natural. “The butter is organic, the eggs are from my own chickens at home. The cream is from local farms, everything is from as close to the source as possible,” she explains. “The things I can’t get locally, like the flour, I get from reputable sources such as King Arthur up in Vermont.” Nancy Dunn started on this quest when she spoke to a person who worked in a local bakery. When ordering a cake, she had been told that this bakery baked from scratch, but an employee told her that they used “big box mixes that we put in the mixers.” When she called to ask, she was finally told that they do use mixes, and that they also use shortening with trans fat in their icings to keep them stable in hot weather. “I was stunned,” she said. “to find out they use box mixes for their cakes and use Crisco in their icings. It was 10 Healing Springs I #78 February—March, 2015
very upsetting. Box mixes have propylene glycol in them, an ingredient in antifreeze. The glycol is sweet and also keeps the starch from crystallizing, so box mix cakes have a good crumb. I get my great texture from reverse mixing, so the eggs are not overbeaten and the cake is light and fluffy. I never use Crisco in my buttercream, although many other bakeries have openly told me that they do. I make a Swiss Meringue buttercream, which is amazingly delicious, all natural, and very stable unless you are going to let your wedding cake or party cake sit outside in the 90 degree sun for five hours!! You don’t need shortening for a stable icing!” “Many people assume they are getting a scratch cake from fresh ingredients when buying from a bakery.“ Many of these cakes look lovely, but the ingredients and quality don’t match the appearance. My cakes taste great and look great, too!” Northern Woods Bakery offers wedding cakes and cakes for all other occasions. She offers nut free cakes and is working on gluten-free choices as well. “I am testing some of the rice flours in my cakes. They are good for smaller cakes, but I still need to tweak them for larger cakes. Stay tuned!” “My most popular flavor is a yellow cake, vanilla flavor. I just did a three tier carrot cake with all natural cheesecream frosting. The bride was over the top and the guests all raved that it was the first wedding cake they actually ate! I get a lot of satisfaction out of making something beautiful that has fresh, all natural ingredients in it, baking the way my grandmother baked 50 years ago.” Northern Woods Bakery serves Lake George and North Creek. Ghee by Kathryn Kos hee is clarified butter-the butter is heated and milk solids (proteins) have been removed. The protein casein found in dairy is difficult for many people to digest. Casein is a large foreign protein that can pass through the human gut easily, contributing to what is known as “leaky” or permeable gut. When these proteins pass through the gut, they can contribute to inflammatory conditions in the body.
G
Many people think they cannot digest the lactose in dairy, but may in fact actually be reacting to the protein casein. Because the casein is removed from ghee, ghee is much easier for many to digest than butter. Ghee is a stable, healthy, saturated fat. Saturated fats are solid at room temperature. Contrary to what you’ve probably heard in the past, these are the very beneficial fats for our body! Saturated fats are fully saturated with hydrogen bonds (NOT to be confused with hydrogenated oils). Saturated fats are stable, and do not easily oxidize when heated (break down) or go rancid. These can be heated to higher temperatures, unlike liquid vegetable oils that have been highly processed. Ghee is very beneficial to the body. The fatty acids insulate myelin in the brain (memory, mood stability, alertness), strengthen the immune system and help to regulate hormones for normal hormone function. Ghee contains short-chain fatty acids as well. Short-chained fatty acids are easily metabolized by the body. What this means is that the body can digest and utilize these fatty acids efficiently, reaping benefits to the body. Ghee contains omega 3 and omega 9 fatty acids, along with Vitamins A, D, E, and K. Grass-fed or pastured ghee is a very high source of CLA, aka conjugated linoleic acids. CLA is a potent cancer fighter. The digestive systems of grass-fed ruminants produce CLA. CLA is associated with superior heart health, suppression of tumors, reduced belly fat and overall increased fat loss. Pasture raised (grass-fed) cows lead to dairy

CLA levels 3-5 times that of grain-fed cattle! Always look for grass-fed butter if you are making your own ghee, or grass-fed ghee if you are buying it. Ghee is excellent for nerve conduction and insulation of the brain. Ghee is great for skin, eyes, and joints-it is rich with antioxidants and boosts the immune system. Ghee is high in butyric acid which has anti-viral properties and may inhibit tumor growth. How do you use ghee? Ghee is great for all your cooking and baking needs. It adds amazing flavor to sauteed or roasted veggies! You can melt it and bake with it. You can serve it on top of potatoes just like butter. Grass-fed ghee is an all around healthy super food that adds superior flavor and healthy benefits to all your dishes! Manifesting
Your Best Life: Clear Visioning Followed by Small and Steady Doing by Wendy Ball y now most of us have either forgotten or given up on most of our New Year resolutions for 2015. It is a ritual we go through, knowing, even as we make that list, that we will succumb to the habitual behaviors we say we want to change. We know that something more is needed in order to make the changes we say we want to make in our lives though what it is continues to confound us.

Healing Springs I #78 February—March, 2015
Many of us can also point to a time in our lives when we found the strength to commit to something we wanted very much and the ability to follow through. What does that teach us? Why are we able to to manifest what we want sometimes and not others. What is the secret? I believe that manifesting the things we want involves a combination of things: 1. clear vision or intent, 2. timing, 3. structure, and 4. one step at a time follow-through.
Clear Vision. The importance of vision is something most of us have been exposed to one way and another, whether it has been through the New Thought movement, New Age writing, coaching of various kinds... We have made vision boards, collages, journaled, dialogued, programmed crystals and our dreams. There is no disputing that clear vision is an essential ingredient of manifesting what we want. Elder care staff in England discovered that having residents create a clear vision of when and how they took their medication, seeing themselves stop whatever they are doing at a certain time of day, going to where their medication is kept, getting a glass of water, etc., walking themselves through the process and talking it out loud to someone, greatly increased their chances of remembering to take their medication. We need to ask the question: What do I want, or need? What is important to me? We need to use whatever means will help us arrive at a clear answer whether it is through writing or talking to someone, or whatever works to become clear. Fleshing out our vision can involve a process of questioning, research, reflection, dialogue, until we can write or state a clear intent or goal. Sometimes it comes out of an exploration of what is missing or what is wrong with ones current circumstances. Exploring what's wrong can be a valuable step in defining what it is we want or need.

Timing. There are times when it is easier to accomplish things. We all have cycles, life cycles, annual cycles, monthly and daily cycles. Make use of energy and relative ease to focus when it is there and go easy on yourself when it is not there. Many of us know what is our best time of day for certain kinds of activity. This is valuable selfknowledge. 2015 is the year of the goat in Chinese astrology. I love what Teri Uktena, Akashic reader and teacher, has to say about this: "Goat is not only industrious but methodical. If you don't know how that works, look at one or two as they denude a landscape of anything edible. It's why they are used as an ecofriendly way to remove blackberries and other stubborn plants from large areas. They will start in one place and in an ever widening circle get the job done one mouthful at a time." This year we have goat energy on our side. It is a good year to manifest what you want..
Structure. Some of us love structure; some of us hate it. It took me many years to realize that structure is my friend. Structure is the boundary of a page of paper, or a deadline. Saying: “I want to put my house on the market by....,” provides structure. One instantly begins to think about everything that needs to be done before this can happen. I like the way Julie Morgenstern talks about organizing time: “A day is like a closet; there is only so much you can put in it.” She coaches people to manifest what is of most value to them by using an agenda and assigning a time to everything beginning with what is most important to you.
One Step At A Time Folllow-Through. One of the things I appreciated most from my years as a domestic violence counselor was the guideline for treatment planning used at the agency I worked in. This structure helped people who had come to feel completely helpless to create safe and productive lives. It began with ‘Objective.’ This is like a mission statement, e.g.: I want to realize Peace in my life. Next was ‘Goals,’ three of them, related to the overall mission statement. An example might be: I want to improve how I deal with conflict in my

I will read the book Difficult Conversations by Small et al within the next 3 months. 2. I will practice noticing when I have been triggered into a reaction and take time out. 3. I will spend time at least once per week with my partner doing something we both enjoy. From overall intention to small steps. Steps are what we can commit to easily and accomplish without feeling overwhelmed. Steps are what we can acknowledge ourselves for at the end of the day and feel good in a measure of progress. This is how a house is built. This is how a garden is planted and reaped. This is how our best life is realized. Of course, there are the things that happen in life over which we have no control. The surrender and skills that are needed to gracefully weather that over which we have no control is part of the overall picture of a life well lived, along with choosing where we can, changing what we can, and finding ways to do what we can. Finally, to manifest your best life it helps to know that you deserve it. It helps to know that no matter what you do or don't manifest you are valuable. You deserve unconditional love and acceptance because you exist and for no other reason. If you cannot bring yourself to act on an intention, consider the possibility that it is not the right intention for you. If it is something that is indisputably needed, than seek assistance to examine and move beyond the blocks. Performers in all areas of life use expert assistance to meet their goals. You deserve nothing less. A good manifestation practice: spend some small amount of time doing something you love every day, and notice how you experience yourself during the doing. It is a good warm-up. Please contact author for references used in this article: Wendy Ball conducts a private therapy, counseling and coaching practice in Albany, NY. DentalasHealth Holistic Health by Dr. David Presser s the term ‘holistic health’ implies, the health of every part of our body is truly connected to every other part. Most people today have been exposed to this idea, and, often as a result of personal experience or conviction, recognize its truth both rationally and intuitively. Despite this logic and sense, though, and especially in our American medical system, there still tends to exist a disconnect between the health of the body and the health of the mouth and jaw. Nonetheless, in any truly holistic approach to the body’s health, the health of the mouth and jaw must necessarily be considered to be affected by and to affect the whole body’s health. Indeed, the mouth and jaws are particularly important areas of the body, because they affect our health on both structural and physiological (including nutritional) levels. Thus our dental health is intimately related to our overall health. The focus of this article is the structural aspects of dental health. 14 Healing Springs I #78 February—March, 2015
A
Internally, we are connected from head-to-toe through the fascia covering our organs and muscles. Imagine your body as a marionette with strings through your arms, legs, and torso, connecting to your head. A strain or distortion of the skull during birth, associated with strains of the connective tissue that envelop the body, can cause self-perpetuating imbalances that continue throughout life. As a child develops, these imbalances can manifest as distortions of the jaw, with crowding or misalignment of the teeth, and can be seen in the posture of the child, as well as in the asymmetry of the child’s face. In an adult, these strains can express themselves in different ways, often causing pain and seemingly unrelated symptoms. Other factors that can contribute to structural distortions are genetics and malnutrition (as demonstrated by Dr. Weston Price). Potential health effects of cranial distortions include: headaches, chronic neck or back pain (including chiropractic adjustments that “don’t hold”), visual problems, scoliosis, digestive problems, TMJ dysfunction, and sinus/airway/breathing problems. Of course, we also need only imagine how any physical distortion and its concurrent discomfort can lead to behavioral changes or affect emotions or moods, whether in infants,
....for optimal health, we are best served by viewing the mouth and jaws as integral parts of the whole, and as having a powerful influence on the state of overall health and well-being. children, or adults. In the case of the chronic pain patient, who may have had a history of trauma, we recognize that the body can maintain for years patterns of strain that occurred at the time of injury. When the patient has involvement of the jaws, it is important for the bite to be corrected, along with those distortions within the body to be released through manual medicine, such as osteopathy, cranial-sacral therapy, myo-fascial release or specialized forms of chiropractic care. Beginning around three decades ago, pioneering dentists interested in extending to orthodontics the then-newly evolving holistic health paradigm affecting general dentistry, studied with osteopathic physicians and learned how to evaluate the distortions of the skull from a whole-body perspective. They then correlated different orthodontic problems with specific cranial distortions, and developed orthodontic techniques and appliances that use the teeth as ‘handles’ to correct those distortions. This confluence of scientific knowledge can produce orthodontic corrections that will be in harmony with the surrounding musculoskeletal system and that can help create a body that is in structural balance, for a lifetime of good health and good feeling. We do indeed have one body that is inter-connected, and for optimal health, we are best served by viewing the mouth and jaws as integral parts of the whole, and as having a powerful influence on the state of overall health and well-being.

Healing Springs I #78 February—March, 2015
by Michael Lenz n our Functional Medicine Pharmacy practice, we see many patients who are seeking to regain optimal health. Often we’re asked about the benefits of doing a detox, so I thought this would be a good opportunity to give a quick overview about the program that we use and recommend.
I
As I mentioned, there is a lot of talk about detoxes wherever you look, and for good reason. Today, we are all exposed to chemicals in the foods we eat, the air we breathe, and the water we drink. Many common complaints to practitioners, such as mental and physical fatigue, may be signs of environmental overload. Supporting the body’s natural metabolic detoxification process may be beneficial. It’s important to remember that not all detoxification programs are science-based, and some may deplete the body of vital nutrients and energy to support the natural elimination process. The Detox Program that we recommend and use is designed around helping the liver – your body’s main detoxification organ – eliminate toxins efficiently and effectively. This requires important vitamins, minerals, and amino acids from protein in order to work properly. Some people are more “toxic” than others, whether it’s from environmental toxins or from toxins that have built up based on the food that they’ve been consuming. In either case, we typically like to have patients fill out a Metabolic Detox questionnaire, which will help determine whether a shorter 10-Day or a longer 28-Day Detox is recommended. The Detox Program we use follows a Simple 3 – Step Protocol that involves eating real food from day one, and you’re able to eat as much as you want. Pretty much all fruits and vegetables, nuts, chicken, turkey, lamb, fish, spices, healthy fats and legumes are on the list. There are no caloric restrictions, so you should never be hungry. is the Initial Clearing Phase. You’ll start to eliminate certain foods from your diet that may be potential toxins while gradually increasing the nutritional supplementation.

As you go through the program, you’re encouraged you to drink plenty of water, and eat plenty of food. Remember, this isn’t a weight loss program, and you shouldn’t be hungry, so eat as much of the allowed foods as you like! That being said, doing an effective metabolic detoxification does require a fairly high level of commitment. I tell patients that they need to be mentally, spiritually, and physically ready before beginning. Starting and stopping before completion is not only costly financially, it also defeats the purpose of the program, which is to allow your body time to get “caught up” with processing and eliminating toxins from your body. Remember, your body wants to be healthy. Oftentimes individuals block their body’s ability to be healthy by putting up barriers through the food and lifestyles choices they make. When you remove those barriers, your body will reward you with optimal health!

The Truth About Attraction
Manifesting Love, Success and Abundance
by Angela Kaufman little knowledge can be counter-productive. Popular buzz about concepts like attraction that are absorbed but not fully understood can stand in the way of bringing true joy into your life. Before you give up on manifesting your goals, consider why you are not attracting what you thought you wanted.
A
Before you can harness the energy of various laws of attraction a few basic concepts must be understood. One is synchronicity. This is a way of expressing that in any given moment you are delivered exactly what you need for whatever purpose you need it. It is universal and always correct. That time the snack machine ate my last dollar and refused to spit out the junk food I was hoping for was no accident. It was a direct response to my previous rumination over unhealthy food choices. If we stop wasting time fighting against momentary disruptions and instead awaken to opportunities to recognize that each moment is giving precisely what we ask for, life flows more like a stream and less like a hurricane enraged sea. Synchronicity often occurs through personal interactions. Recently while finishing a psychic reading event at Café NOLA in Schenectady, I was in a conversation with one of the owners. As we discussed upcoming workshops and events, a woman at a nearby table asked if I was the psychic reader, and when I affirmed that I was she said “I wanted to schedule to meet with you!” It turns out she was unable to schedule electronically and this seemingly chance encounter solved that. To add further irony, one of the subjects the owner of the restaurant and I had been discussing was synchronicity in planning and marketing these events! To the unenlightened these are mere “coincidences” but to use this term robs the phenomenon of what it truly is- a gift from the universe. Another overlooked key is intention. This is where many people stray in their practices of visualization or attraction. If on a surface level I want to be in a happy, harmonious relationship, but on a deeper level my intention is to always be in control and not have to compromise with others, I am sacrificing my conscious desire- the relationship- for my subconscious intention. I can’t have both. Similarly if I desire success but fear the ensuing responsibility such success would bring, my intention on a deep emotional level is not matching what I am stating my cognitive “intention” to be. Therefore I am not really working out of my deepest intention, I am merely making a wish with no emotional backing. Fear does a lot to sabotage this process. Fear of success, fear of failure, fear of not deserving a goal and so on. In order to effectively use the process of intention, it is important to hold a desired goal in a way that becomes multidimensional (you can see, touch, taste, smell, hear when you imagine it) and in addition it is important that this desired outcome far outweigh any fears or hang ups that would stand in the way of you reaching out and grabbing any opportunities that would link you with your desired outcome. What happens if you have a mental intention without working on surpassing the emotional hang ups that stand in the way? You will repeatedly be given opportunities to reach out and claim your goal, but will not see them. If you do see them, you will judge them, back peddling and talking your way out of taking the necessary risks required to make your intention a reality. Intention is key and must come from an emotionally 18 Healing Springs I #78 February—March, 2015
charged source, otherwise fear, doubt and insecurity are liable to sabotage attainment of your goal. In order to successfully manifest what you desire, it is essential that you face and come to terms with any remaining ambivalence. Ambivalence is the neutral territory that keeps one foot in the future and another stuck in the past. In Tarot it is portrayed through the archetype of the Chariot. Like being unclear in your intention, being ambivalent casts a shadow over progress. When we are ambivalent we have no commitment to moving forward and taking risk. To some extent present circumstances, however painful, are also deemed useful on some subconscious level. This occurs frequently when exploring relationships. We identify feeling unhappy or stuck, but it is often easier to blame the other person or circumstances rather than owning what aspects of ourselves are allowing us to remain captive in a process. In order to overcome ambivalence, another important principle of manifestation must be understood; faith. In order to truly accept and welcome change on any level, we must first have a complete, deeply-rooted belief that change can and will occur for our best interest. While it is difficult to have faith in the unseen, and change involves transformation into that which can not be presently seen, faith is a necessary ingredient. Through faith, we are allowing a future-in-progress which is currently manifesting to work out better than could have been expected. Most of us, become accustomed to not expecting anything more than our last experience proved possible. This may be a safe way to go, as it shields us from disappointment, yet it is extremely limiting. After all, how can I strive for something if I really don’t have faith in anything better than what life has already shown me? In addition, to successfully manifest it is important to draw on internal reserves of personal power. Consider how much more successful you will be when you harness your natural gifts and use these strengths to materialize your heart’s desire. For women, all too often their inner strength is confined or shut down altogether by cultural messages that invalidate the source of women’s power and wisdom. There are distinct and separate ways such powerful personal energies express themselves. When we try too hard to manifest from a place outside of our natural seat of power the results are seldom lasting. If you are truly ready to attract great relationships, career, family, or any personal passion, align yourself with the Universe’s time (synchronicity). Be open to random encounters that bring big opportunities, sometimes in disguise. Also, be clear in your intent. Yes that means you can no longer hide behind the excuse-making wall of ambivalence and half steps. Finally, be willing to emphasize your power, your strengths and gifts. Ki-Hara
Resistance S t re t c h i n g I by Peter Guare magine a world where you see your knee pain for what it is: a signal to do a quick, effective exercise to reduce or eliminate it, in just a few minutes. Where back, shoulder, neck pain… all succumb to this powerful weapon against premature aging that you can use on the spot. And even better, weakness and stiffness disappear. You’ve entered the Ki-Hara Resistance Stretching zone. Most muscle and joint pain are the result of muscle imbalances, caused by repetitive movements, inactivity or poor posture. Your knee pain, for example, may well be caused by excessive sitting. Holding the knee bent conditions tension into the lower hamstring, which is opposed by the quad. The quad, whose job is to straighten the knee, is being trained to remain stretched. Now when you get up, the quad tries to shorten, but you’ve com-
promised it. And that weakness becomes PAIN! Even worse, the quad/ hamstring imbalance is tugging on the knee joint , twisting it. Now you have joint wear, too. I know all about this, because this is how I discovered Ki-Hara Resistance Stretching. My chronic pain led me to this all-in-one fitness and functionality tool, and now I’m pain and drug free. In Ki-Hara, you tense a muscle group and then use other muscles to stretch it while it resists. You can dismantle tension and accomplish myofascial release through the full range of motion. By adding resistance to your stretching routine, you increase its safety and effectiveness while turning it into an all-in-one fitness system that combines flexibility, cardio and strength training while maximizing the return on your time and effort, and keeping the demand appropriate to your fitness level. The resistance stabilizes the joints and protects the muscles from overstretching or tearing, all while safely working the muscle group at a high level, even higher (if you choose) than normal strength training. And that’s another benefit: you choose how hard and in what range you work. Because one muscle group works against the other, your core get stronger as it stabilizes you (its primary purpose). And you strength train the muscles doing the stretching, and even improve strength in the stretched muscles, along with range of motion. The cardio happens when you move from one exercise to the next, like circuit training. Ki-Hara uses 16 different stretches to target your whole body, allowing you to find out where your imbalances are; and as we’ve seen, imbalances are issues waiting to happen. Plus, you stop wasting energy generating tension you don’t want. With Ki-Hara, you become friends with your body, giving it what it desperately needs. And your body will return the favor! by Sarah Lobisco ccording to the Statistic Brain website’s New Year’s Resolution Statistics page,(1) 45% of Americans make a new year’s resolution, with weight loss being in the number one position. Sadly, the overall success rate of achieving the end goal is only 8%.
A
Perhaps this is due to the fact that most people are focusing on the final result rather than a commitment to a process which incorporates a lifestyle change. In other words, diets don’t work, but changing dietary patterns can. For example, when it comes to weight loss, too many people are focused on calorie deprivation rather than feeding their body the nutrients it needs for fuel and to burn fat. An optimal weight is not achieved through calorie counting alone. A calorie is not just a calorie. Food is information and your body’s blood sugar and inflammatory response is completely different for a jellybean verses a piece of broccoli. Therefore, I want to help you focus on how to stay healthy this upcoming spring. It may be too late for New Year’s, but you can start a change anytime of year!
Tip One: Eat Real Food Eating whole, organic foods can positively affect your overall nutrient absorption and decrease the amount of inflammatory chemicals, pesticides, and GMOs in your body.
Tip Two: Move Your Body Exercise in a way that you enjoy. Most studies are now pointing to high-intensity training to burn fat, (9) but keep in mind some caveats. Some may need more yoga or calming movement to mitigate high levels of inflammation and chronic stress.
Tip Three: Sleep
call Katrina: 518.332.6581 katrina@healingspringsjournal.com 24
Healing Springs I #78 February—March, 2015
Sleep effects inflammation, immune and brain health, and yes, appetite and satiety signaling. Lack of sleep could also affect your gut bugs, which also have an impact on all of the above mentioned about sleep. This means you may want to make it a habit to get to bed earlier. (If you need tips for better sleep, I have some on my website: http://dr-lobisco.com/goldilocks-the-three-bears-and-the-just-right-sleep-hacks/)
Tip Four: Stress Less Stress can trump hormones and blood sugar regulation. Studies show that stress is linked to weight gain as well. (15) So, find some time to do something you love and zone out from the stress every day, even if just for a little while.
Tip Five: Find Out Who Your Friends Are Make friends with others who share your lifestyle changes. Positive social connections that support your goals can have an influence on your behavior and outcomes. These are just five general suggestions. A good naturopathic or functional medicine doctor can also guide those who are “weight loss resistant” in other areas such as cleansing, food sensitivities, genetic influences, hormonal imbalances, and hidden causes of inflammation. A Final Note: Sadly, this will be my last article for The Healing Springs Journal. I have recently taken a position out of state that will lead me away from this beautiful area. I will miss all my readers and clients; however, I feel it will further benefit my education and allow me an opportunity to make a broader impact with clinicians and clients alike. I wish you all a wonderful 2015 and thank you for all you do in supporting integrative wellness in this region. Warmest Regards, Dr. Sarah Sarah LoBisco, ND is a graduate of the University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine (UBCNM). She is licensed in Vermont as a Naturopathic Doctor and holds a BA in psychology. POWERFUL Phytonutrients: Broccoli Targets Cancer and Leaves Healthy Cells Alone
enzyme that plays a role in whether certain genes are expressed or not, such as tumor suppressor genes. This exciting news comes on the heels of other news about the cruciferous vegetables that show they are proven cancer-fighting foods. One study found teaming up fresh broccoli with a spicy food that contains the enzyme myrosinase significantly enhances each food’s individual cancer-fighting power and ensures that absorption takes place in the upper part of the digestive system where you'll get the maximum health benefit. What are those foods? Radishes, cabbage, arugula, watercress, and Brussels sprouts all boost the benefits found in broccoli. The study noted that you only receive these benefits if the vegetables are eaten raw or lightly steamed. The more broccoli is cooked the more these fragile phytonutrients are damaged. If the broccoli is mush it’s useless nutritionally. Do supplements that are made of isolated neutraceuticals have the same effect in the body as whole foods? In another study that looked at supplements that just containing sulphoraphane without the other parts of the broccoli plant they discovered that it was not well absorbed and, of course, not well utilized.
by Dr. Olejak he journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research reported1 that sulforaphane, one of the primary phytochemicals in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables that helps them prevent cancer, has been shown for the first time to selectively target and kill cancer cells while leaving normal prostate cells healthy and unaffected.
T
What was so amazing about this discovery is that it showed that prostate tumor growth was slowed by a diet containing sulforaphane and that “sulforaphane can target cancer cells through multiple chemopreventive mechanisms.” This study showed for the first time that “sulforaphane selectively targets benign hyperplasia cells and cancerous prostate cells while leaving the normal prostate cells unaffected." What this points to is the innate intelligence in plant compounds; no pharmaceutical or isolated neutraceutical can do that. In a similar study, brassica vegetables (Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli) were associated with decreased risk of colon cancers. The researchers at Oregon State University found that sulforaphane, which is found at fairly high levels in broccoli, cauliflower and other cruciferous vegetables, is an inhibitor of an
This points to the enormous value of eating whole foods, and when necessary, use only whole food supplements -- where care is taken to grow plants organically and preserve and use the entire plant in the supplement. When choosing a cruciferous product keep these things in mind. The potential real whole foods and whole food supplements have to nourish our bodies should now be readily apparent. They turn on our genes and amplify our ability to fight cancer. Maybe, as Dr. Servan-Schreiber, described in his book Anti-Cancer5 we don’t have cancer genes, but “fast food intolerant genes.” We build an anti-cancer biology with the food we eat three times a day. Dr. Olejak is a chiropractor and applied clinical nutritionist with 23 years of clinical practice. A Palmer graduate, he has been speaking on nutrition and public health since 2002. He is the co-author of Synergistic Therapeutics: Herbs and Whole Food Nutrition for 50 Common Ailments. No smoking - causes systemic inflammation which seems the cause of almost everything
Feed your Microbiome - for every human cell, a healthy person has 9 microorganisms living and supporting them, in their digestive tract, on their skin, in their mouth- gained from vaginal birth, breastfeeding and contact with family initially, it is altered with each round of antibiotics, overcleanliness, non exposure to animals and dirt, not enough plant fiber consumed, eating "dead" processed food. At least take a probiotic daily on an empty stomach, find naturally fermented foods and eat 1 Tablespoon a day minimum. Healthy microbiome improves immune response (less colds and flu), improve depression and anxiety, improve digestion and gut issues, decrease "Leaky Gut" syndrome and food sensitivities.
3 4
Be Happy - we chose what to focus on in our life and how we want to react to it- be a “glass half full” person
Learn to cook - preparing most of your meals makes one more aware of where their foods comes from, it is lower in chemicals, unhealthy fats and salt and we tend to do less mindless eating and a develop a sense of accomplishment and control 28 Healing Springs I #78 February—March, 2015

What comes to mind first is to stop, each and every day for at least 5 minutes and consciously breath. Let your attention go to each of your senses in any order, and note what each one is experiencing. This will lead to awareness. Awareness is not being just attentive, but is more than that. It embraces the knowing beyond the limitations of thoughts, the automatic responses to everyday stimuli, and will transform your life to living fully in every experience.
2
Give back. Each of us is blessed with an abundance of something that someone else may be able to use. Whether it is a smile, a dollar to a charitable organization, picking up a discarded scrap that belongs in a garbage pail 50 feet away, or saying 'thank you'.
3 4
Reflect on your day for a moment before going to sleep at night. Be grateful for all of it.
Listen. Listen to your heart, the part that knows what path is right, what action is correct, even what to eat. Do you visit an alternative practitioner or a traditional one? They will offer advice, but that is an educated opinion. Does your inner knowing resonate with what they are saying, or do you have doubts? Allow for uncertainty in your life, what do you have to lose by asking questions and listening carefully with discernment? Follow the heart’s knowing.
5
Lastly, recognize that there is always choice, even when you can’t imagine it or feel it. Opportunities are boundless to perceive a slightly different response to every different situation that presents itself and is the difference between feeling good with your decision, and not. Free will is a great gift that is too often squandered by giving your power away to a white coat, a collar, or a uniform. Respecting that any interaction with life has consequences, sometimes even illness, and acting accordingly with respect is actually very liberating, and healthy. Do these suggestions seem to answer the question? Only you can know, and that knowing is your health and well being.

Begin each day with a sense of reverence and respect for yourself. Appreciate your body, mind and soul as divine expressions. Affirm that this is so even if your thoughts and feelings disagree. Reinforce this deeper truth by embodying a calm spaciousness throughout the day. Release emotional reactions as they arise and replace them with this attitude. This will serve to enrich and expand your divine core and will inspire others to tap into their own compassionate nature.
2
Make stillness a daily habit. Begin the day with 10 minutes of silent reflection. This simple practice can clear your mind and set a good tone to help you meet the day's challenges. Over time, using stillness daily can powerfully transform the nature of your mind/emotions so that serenity and clarity become natural, readily accessible responses to life's opportunities.
3
Accept whatever presents as challenges or perceived obstacles without judgment. Suspend negative reactions long enough to allow their deeper purpose to be revealed. In this way, you'll be living in the divine flow of life and appreciate the inherent value in all experiences.

Become mindful about what radiates from you. All thoughts, emotions and actions communicate a vibratory frequency that affects everyone. Take ownership of your thoughts, feelings and actions. Experiment with transforming negative states through visualizations, affirmations, prayers or mantras. This will refresh and lighten your energetic field so that you become a blessing to many.
5
End the day with gratitude. Before sleep give thanks for the bounty and grace in your life.

Awakening
Intuition
by Allison Petroski e are grateful for this opportunity to communicate with you today. Communication is a telepathic experience. This does not mean you need special powers to communicate optimally, it means that you already have telepathic and extra sensory abilities that you have become so accustomed to, that you no longer believe them to be unique or extra-ordinary. When someone speaks to you, or you speak to someone else, they are communicating with you through an energetic language. You see that energy expressed through body language, and then spoken words, and lastly through action. As communication leaves the energetic bodies within you, it becomes a less and less refined mode of expression. At its core, the highest truth is actually communicated in its most subtle energetic state of personal feeling and thought. It is it’s most refined in this state, because it is a pure representation of your personal truth in that moment, even if it is a belief that is not in alignment with your highest good. As that energy is communicated outwards through the various levels of expression, there is increasing opportunity to alter your truth and manipulate the communication to create a specific outcome. To the degree that that outcome is based on egoic expectations, is the degree to which you will alter your truth as it rises through the levels of communication. When you can allow and accept your truth, the need to alter it will lessen. Most people can pick up on what is really being said or expressed telepathically, or energetically, even if they are not aware that that’s what is happening. It’s just as easy to accept words or actions from someone else at face value, especially if those words and actions play into your egoic expectations.
W Allow the drum to take you deep into your self.

Healing Springs I #78 February—March, 2015
You are a highly intuitive and energetically sensitive being, by nature. Many are awakening to an even deeper awareness and understanding of this subtle energetic language. This is due to the mass awakening that is occurring on the planet. You will begin to be able to sense things from other people and situations that are beneath the surface of what is actually being said or acted upon. You will begin to be able to sense the authenticity, the intention, and perhaps even the motive behind why people are acting in a certain way- even if it is being expressed very differently. This more refined form of detection first becomes apparent to you through subtle feelings within you. Where you just know that what someone is saying or doing does not quite line up with what they are actually feeling. People use words and action all of the time to cover up what they are actually experiencing in order to keep their innermost truth safe, because it feels to vulnerable to reveal. It is not for you to use this keener understanding of energetic language to point out to another what you think their truth is, or that there is even a disconnect occurring. It is not a pedestal to form more
judgment from. This is a space for you to practice learning how you are sensing the world; to move into a place of observation about how the world is communicating, and to refine how authentically you are expressing your truth. Assume at this point that every person that crosses your path, in some way is an opportunity for you to establish a deeper understanding of yourself. Use your interactions with others as a way to observe your own authentic communicative skills. And be aware of how you alter your own truth as it is expressed through the levels of communication. Do not expect others to express themselves in the same way you are working on. They are where they are- honor their personal process. Simply do your best to be your highest expression of communication while holding those you communicate with in a state of gratitude and appreciation. By being an example of your truest self, you will open up the space for others to communicate with you in the most honest and loving way. The subtleties that you are beginning to sense are an opening to ways in which you can connect with and enhance your personal truth and connection with your Higher Self. These subtleties are an energetic language that is unique to you. It is how Source, or your Higher Self communicates with you. It is an intuitive language that keys you into your own higher knowing. The intuitive language you develop within yourself, inspired by your connection to your Higher Self, will allow you the space to open up to your own deepest desires. It will shed light on the fears that keep you stuck in your life, and it will gently guide you through those fears with enlightened perspective and positive insight. The fears are creations of the lower self, developed at points in your life when survival was threatened. Now, with your growing intuitive perspective, you will be able to look at beliefs and patterns from the perspective of Higher Self, where every situation and experience has the potential of being lived with increasing grace and ease. The choice is yours. Intuition and connection to Higher Self will open up doorways to empowering choices where transformation is easily accessible. Are you ready to listen to that Higher Perspective and that subtler form of communication? Allison Petroski is an intuitive, with a strong background in the healing arts, providing messages of empowerment through personalized written intuitive readings for people. Her intention is to infuse more compassion and heart based consciousness into the world, through her work with intuition. She can be reached at Allison@shringarhealingarts.com or through her website: www.allisonpetroski.com. While training in an energy modality called ThetaHealing, I was taught how to scan a person’s body and give a reading of the chakras and energy. After several months of using this method, my readings opened up, and I found that through my natural love of writing, I was able to receive intuitive messages about a person when I wrote them out. When I do the automatic writing, all I need is someone’s name, and I connect with Higher Self consciousness, and detailed information comes through on the person I am reading, providing a higher perspective and clarity on life’s mysteries and opportunities for expansion.

“...the old Indian still sits upon the earth instead of propping himself up and away from its life giving forces. For him, to sit or lie upon the ground is to be able to think more deeply and to feel more keenly. He can see more clearly into the mysteries of life and come closer in kinship to other lives about him.” —Luther Standing Bear
