Advertising and story deadline for June/July issue is May 8
Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you Do you remember reading your first Healing Springs Journal? It may have been quite awhile ago, as this issue marks the 13th birthday. In celebration, we are trying a glossy cover to see how you like it. Perhaps it inspires you to finally call the advertisers that speak to your heart and soul. I love the sounds of songs whether from a human, bird, or coyote. Yet, extraneous noise insults my senses. Today noise is everywhere, from the hum of appliances to the constant barrage of pop-up messages and offers. We hope not to add to the cacophony, but contribute valuable content that empowers you to know yourself as the healer of your life and body. With another anniversary, I am struck with how things are seemingly always the same while also constantly changing. Trees teach this as they go through each season—every day different, yet each phase of the cycle exactly like the year before. To give some perspective of time, the first issue of The Healing Springs Journal was in 2002, Facebook began in 2004, iPhones came out in 2007, and we survived the prophecy of 2012. Even with these societal changes, the Journal remains the same. Or so it seemed, until I pulled out the first issue and saw it was all black and white, all newsprint, only 16 pages long and I won’t even go into the design. Over the years many people have asked how I started the Journal. It makes me smile to tell the story, for it reminds me that while I followed an impulse it was something beyond me that created The Healing Springs Journal. I had left my 9-5 job a year prior in order to work for a photographer. While I enjoyed the photography, the environment was not a good fit for me. So, I left there and took on a few other jobs looking for one that felt like more than just work. I was always interested in healing modalities and yet couldn’t tune into the one that felt like my path. One day I was in the Reiki Room with my friends Terry and Sue when Mark Tolstrup came in to introduce himself as a Tai Chi practitioner. Somewhere in the conversation he suggested that our healing community needed a newsletter. Interestingly enough, I had the skills to create such a thing. When I left there I remembered a few weeks prior a friend had mentioned he had a computer his company was throwing out. I had turned it down at the time, seeing no good reason for another computer. Right then, I called him and lo and behold the computer was still in his car waiting to find a home. It was loaded with Quark, Photoshop and Word, giving me the ability to start the Journal with no financial investment. After putting together some materials, I called acupuncturist Michael Wayne to tell him my idea. He invited me to a meeting of local practitioners that just happened to be taking place the next morning. Almost every person in attendance wanted to advertise in the first issue, and The Healing Springs Journal was born. While I did the work needed to make it something you can hold, this story exemplifies the connection the Healing Springs has with the world beyond the physical. I am the caretaker and hope to continue hearing its messages and follow its longings as an entity of its own. Over the years, I have written 79 Publisher’s Corners. I’ve been slowly compiling these essays with the idea of putting together a book. While reading, I see themes repeat; two of the many are connection and wholeness. The essays are written from my personal experience, yet they represent what The Healing Springs Journal is about as well. Connection arises in my writing primarily in reference to animals and nature. Its role in the journal is the connection of practitioners and ideas with its readers. Here

are a few ways I’ve mentioned connection.... June/July 2004; “Being with nature is my connection to the divine. I could live without this connection, but that’s all it would be—living, surviving. When amongst trees, birds, earth, water, my spirit thrives. Every thing is simultaneously sacred and commonplace.” In June/July ‘12 “It seems that I came into the world with a longing in my soul... There are periods when the ache is at bay, yet it inevitably returns. I now see a consistency between the longing’s fulfillment and my being immersed in the inherent connection of nature—feeling welcomed by a tree as I lean my back up against its trunk, engaging with a hawk in flight, going to sleep under the stars or being in silent communication with my horse.” Feb/Mar ’14 “Turns out, wearing feathers and deerskin are unnecessary to show a connection to the world. All we need is to play our song.” Wholeness is mentioned in our mission statement and parallels healing. It is so important we chose it as the theme for the Healing Springs Symposium on May 9th. References to whole and wholeness.... Aug/Sept ’07 “I cannot be fully integrated, while compartmentalizing myself and believing that only parts of my whole have any true value.” June/July ‘10 “A sense of fullness and wholeness took over and I stopped thinking at all. I simply walked in unity with all this beauty—feeling the sun’s warmth, hearing the leaves sing in the breeze, seeing the animals simply living. This is where I know unconditional love.” June/July ‘12 “For years I have been seeking wholeness. It is now apparent that I had mistakenly believed being whole would mean perfection by human standards. Yet with time behind me, what sages have been saying for eternity rings true in my bones. Totality comprises everything, including that which could be thought of as opposites; soul and ego, spirit and matter, light and dark, greatness and mediocrity, joy and anger, motivated and lazy.” Oct/Nov ‘14 “Human life is full of paradox, as exemplified in breathing, the very thing that keeps us alive. For we can not breathe in without breathing out and vice versa. There is nothing better about in or out, they are equal in their opposites. Embracing this, and its implications, may be a giant step to wholeness.” Dec ‘14/Jan ’15 “There is a cultural ideal of seeing only the positive or looking at things from a spiritual paradigm... In a world of pain, this positive or spiritual bypass is a constant temptation. Yet, it can be a detour on the path to genuine happiness and wholeness.” Another repetitive theme is authenticity. I’ve run out of room, however, so we’ll leave it for us all to live genuinely rather than reading my musings about it. Please remember that The Healing Springs Journal is brought to you exclusively by the support of its advertisers. Let’s keep things connected and whole by showing them our love.

Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network Upcoming Programs
Dr. Richard Aulicino
The Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network, or SIMEN, has two upcoming programs scheduled. Both will occur at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry St., in the Community Room, and are free and open to the public.
A holistic approach for an aesthetic result
The first program occurs on Tuesday, April 14 at 6:30 pm and is entitled, “ADHD: Overcoming It Without Drugs.” If you ask veteran teachers if children’s behavior and attention has deteriorated over the past 30 years, they will wholeheartedly say yes. It is not that we are better at diagnosing, instead something has changed in our children over the past two generations. What is it? ADHD did not suddenly appear in an adult or child’s life. Parents will tell you that their child has always acted this way. This means that the ADHD condition is developmental – the adult or child never developed the ability to pay attention. And there are many ways that ADHD rears its ugly head – hypersensitivity to sound, having racing thoughts, a wandering mind, and more.

The presenter, Kathy Johnson, MS Ed, of Pyramid of Potential, has helped people for over a decade improve brain functioning, including ADHD. She will walk you through the development of the brain and what could keep someone from being able to focus. She addresses many types of ADHD, and will give you some therapeutic activities to do at the presentation to change the brain, no matter what age. The second program, which occurs on Wednesday, May 13 at 6:30pm, is entitled “Sex is Energy: Intimacy and Eroticism From the Orient.” There can be an attraction between two people so powerful it might completely change the direction of one’s life. We can’t force it to happen and we often don’t see it coming, but once established it can make moving to Alaska to be with what is 13th Anniversary Issue, #79 April/May ‘15 I Healing Springs

essentially a stranger, even though we hate the cold and dark winters, all of a sudden sound like a really great idea. Many people are hoping for that singular life event: a Big Bang that will create a new cosmos in which to delight and play. In our contemporary culture, the idea of finding the “One” is often believed to be necessary for personal happiness and there is a plethora of dating sites available to help achieve this goal. If sex and attraction are so powerful in the beginning, and we desire so strongly for the relationship to work out, why does it often become so difficult? The presenter, Gregg St. Clair, M.S., L.Ac., has been studying Oriental Philosophy since 1983; practicing Tai Chi, Qi Gong and traditional Taoist sexual techniques since 1991; and is a licensed Acupuncturist with his Master’s in Traditional Oriental Medicine. Locally-Made Soaps For Dogs & People Just months after launching an online store, Cohoes-based Junie B Love is breaking into the brick and mortar retail space with its “Dirty Dog Soap” and “Mountain Dog Soap.” The line of all-natural goat milk soaps, for both dogs and people, is custom made in the Rensselaer County Taconic mountains. The soap started appearing on the shelves at the flagship Orvis store in Manchester, Vt. “This is exciting, to be expanding into physical brick and mortar retail,” said Alana Sparrow, owner of Junie B Love. “We are starting with the Manchester store. Then, as our company grows, we plan to expand into other Orvis stores that carry dog products.” The soaps contain 100 percent raw liquid goat milk and use only essential oils and natural ingredients. There are no added colors, perfumes or fragrances. As the owner of a Welsh Terrier, named Junebug, Sparrow wanted to create a soap that would be gentle on her dog’s sensitive skin as well as her own. But the special formula has other benefits for both dog and human as well. "Natural soap lathers very well, but it also rinses in about half the time as regular dog shampoo,” Sparrow said. “Dogs love water and swimming, but I don't think they particularly like the shower spray because they’re not in control. A quicker shower time creates a more pleasant bathing experience for dogs and those who wash them.” In addition to the Manchester Orvis store, the soap is available for purchase online now at: http://junieblove.co/shop/bath-apothecary/dirty-dog-soap/

How to
Process Pain
for Lasting Release
by Peter Guare ain is born in the brain. Sensory neurons send information to the brain about the state of the body, and the brain interprets those signals as best it can. Usually it is on target; but sometimes it isn’t. And how we interpret the brain’s interpretation adds one more opportunity for error.

Take, for example, muscle pain. Because pain and strength use the same neural pathways, pain pre-empts strength. But strength also pre-empts pain. In my Ki-Hara Resistance Stretching classes, participants learn how to diagnose whether the pain is really weakness, and what to do about it. In this case, the brain is giving us important information about the problem. It’s up to us to choose the appropriate solution. But most of us don’t care enough to fix the problem, so we cover it up with drugs or just stop doing the things we used to do. And now we’re old. Sometimes pain is a function of the brainimproperly processing the information; phantom limb pain is one example. Here a problematic limb has been amputated, but the brain continues to sense pain in the limb that is no longer there. Fibromyalgia is another case where the pain is a result of inaccurate processing. Trigger points, a very common cause of pain, are the result of the brain telling muscle fibers to continue to contract, rather than relaxing until they need to work again. That area of the muscle becomes too dense to eliminate waste products and absorb blood, and a referred pain pattern is generated, sometimes far away from the trigger point. Reprogramming brain responses can be done in several ways. In the March 2015 issue of Scientific American, neurosurgeon Kevin Tracey discusses the use of vagus nerve stimulation to treat a man crippled with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Within weeks, he was sufficiently pain free that his doctors cautioned him not to resume the more strenuous activities he had given up until his body had strengthened sufficiently.
10
But there are other ways to change brain responses. One of the most exciting uses dual attention stimuli to simulate the processing that happens during REM sleep, when the eyes dart back and forth as the sleeper dreams. These eye movements, called saccades, are what give rise to the name Rapid Eye Movement. EMDR, eye movement desensitization and retraining, utilizes this technique. And an even more effective technique consists of tapHealing Springs I 13th Anniversary Issue, #79 April/May ‘15

This is different from Emotional Freedom Technique, which I also do, but doesn’t use dual attention. I suspect that they are related, as in the end it’s all energy, but I’ve found this process to be more effective for functional pain relief. And it appears to have other benefits, which I suspect are all related to the release of inappropriate muscle tension; muscle tension that restricts the flow of energy and is itself a stressor when chronic. Here’s an example of how I use this powerful technique in my classes. You can try it and see how you like it:
Lie on your back, and raise your legs up as close to vertical as you can. Squeeze your feet together, activating your inner thigh muscles or adductors. Place your hands on the insides of your thighs and use them to pull your legs apart, while resisting. Note what your range of motion is. Now tapabout 5 times using your right fingers on your right foot in the general area of Liver 3, about an inch above where your big and second toe meet. Then tap in the same way (either hand) in the same place on your left foot. Repeat this sequence several times. Now do the stretch again. Notice any difference? My stretchers –and myself – all notice an increased range. That should correlate to better liver function, as we’ve released chronic muscle tension blocking energy flow. And you’ve strengthened and stretched your adductor muscles.

There is a similar technique that generates a powerful relaxation response by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system. I use it in my classes to reset breathing patterns for optimal recovery and stress reduction. Several practitioners have reported success with calming autistic children. And one of the parents who comes to my Alpha Athlete training with her daughter reported major relief of her crippling chronic low back pain after a brief Far Infrared Sauna session and thirty seconds of tapping on precise areas of her upper back. These techniques are usually not one-shot cures, a big reason why I integrate them with my Ki-Hara classes. Several applications, however, often bring lasting relief; and when they don’t, the techniques can often be self-administered. After having struggled with crippling chronic pain myself, I’m ecstatic to find advanced techniques to address the causes of the pain. And the only side effects have been improved function and stress reduction. This is the forefront of mind/body solutions to mind/body problems. To fix the system, address the system. Re-Labeling The “March Against Monsanto” In Your Mind by Abigail Thurston s the title of the event, “March Against Monsanto” a turn-off to the Albany food activists?
I
If you don’t know who Monsanto is… Monsanto was the manufacturer of “Agent Orange” used in the Vietnam War, which devastated the environment and the health of many. This giant business currently controls the seed supply for the US and many other countries, legally forcing farmers to plant Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) crops, and lacing our food supply with bee and butterfly killing pesticide formula known as, Round Up.
due to the poison so liberally spread on lawns, gardens, crops and plants one can buy at the big box stores. Monsanto’s deep pockets and political alliances make it difficult for farmers to raise and sell affordable, organic, non-GMO food. It’s reported that 93% of Americans want GMO foods labeled. 50 countries worldwide have already banned or require labeling of GMO foods, including China. Our state neighbor, Vermont is the first state in the union to pass a bill requiring GMO labeling.
There are potential health risks associated with eating engineered foods designed to withstand high levels of toxic pesticides. Current studies point to Monsanto’s GMOs and pesticides (that are the mainstay in America’s diet) as the cause of multiple autoimmune diseases. Our pollinating insect friends are vanishing

Perhaps, you’re like me and find the title of the upcoming, “March Against Monsanto” on May 23rd to be distasteful. I’m a holistic practitioner, environmentally friendly and a spiritually conscious individual who strives to live a life of loving-kindness and compassion. I understand the power of words in manifesting a desired intention (aka, the law of attraction). To be “against” something can create the potential for more of it.
I’d rather be for the desired result. I am for… the right to know what’s in my food. I am for… taking action steps to make my food safe. I’m for… the beautiful pollinating work of butterflies and bees. I am for… affordable, safe, organic food for everyone. I felt discouraged by the lack of turnout at last year’s (2014) rally. Only 150-200 people gathered to get the attention of the New York governmental leaders. As co-director of Saratoga Integrative Practitioners Network (SIPN), I know hundreds of local holistic practitioners. Yet, I didn’t see a single familiar face showing their support. Perhaps the vibe of the name lacks the positive results desired and repels the health foodies from gathering? Despite the unfortunate name, are YOU willing to re-label the “March Against Monsanto” in your mind and attend the “Future of Your Food Safety”? The annual “March Against Monsanto” takes place in Albany on May 23rd at the Albany State Capital.. Check Facebook for details. Make This Event Positive & Fun! • Wear a creative costume! Bumble bee… Butterfly… Cornucopia of Fruit… • Invite friends for support • Bring an instrument or sing a song • Chant a prayer with your beads • Teach a yoga/dance/movement class on the lawn • Coordinate a flash mob • Bring your sage, drum or tuning forks to realign the energy • Make a sign/t-shirt about WHAT YOU’RE FOR • Create a taste test challenge of GMO vs. Non-GMO food. Additional ways to support GMO labeling in New York; 1. Please write your NY assembly-person and senator to let them know, you deserve to know what’s in your food. (add the names of Senators and assembly people with phone #s) 2. Vote with your dollars by buying foods that are committed to GMO safety for you. Abigail Thurston is the owner of www. Leaky Gut?
by Kathryn Kos, Primal Bliss Nutrition he health of your digestion is a key factor in the health of your body. 70-80% of our body’s immune system lies within the gut.The term “leaky gut” or “permeable gut” is very common now in the alternative healthcare community. However, what exactly is a leaky gut? What causes leaky gut? How can we heal the gut? In this piece I will shed some light for you, and give you some recommendations that I make to my clients when working with them to heal and seal their leaky gut.

The small intestines are naturally permeable to very small molecules in order to absorb nutrients. Regulation ofintestinal permeability is one of the functions of the cells that line the intestinal wall. However, larger proteins that are difficult to digest or foreign, can break apart these tight junctions in the intestinal wall. Typically individuals with a leaky gut are sensitive to gluten, and possibly other proteins found in certain grains. However, there are many factors that can contribute to this mechanism, such as: poor diet (heavy consumption of modern grains that are not soaked or sprouted to remove anti-nutrients, processed foods, and bad oils), infections, toxins, too little stomach acid, deficiency of good bacteria (gut flora), not beingbreastfed (breastfeeding promotes the closure of the inner luminal layer of the intestinal lining), consumption of medications and anti-inflammatory drugs, alcohol use, stress and age can also cause these tight junctions to break apart.
Once these tight junctions become broken apart and larger proteins can pass through the walls of your gut, you haveleaky gut. Signs that you have a leaky gut • Any issues with digestion (bloating, indigestion, gas, diarrhea), and IBS • Food intolerances and food allergies • Seasonal and pet allergies • Diagnosis of an autoimmune disease, for example: hashimotos thyroid, lupus, sjrogren’s syndrome, celiacdisease, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis • Skin conditions like eczema, redness, and acne • Mood and behavioral issues or changes
Steps to healing the gut I work with my clients on an elimination diet, removing the most difficult to digest foods, such as gluten, dairy, and soy, replacing them with nutrient dense, easy to digest foods. I recommend recolonizing the gut with good bacteria through fermented foods and quality probiotic supplementation. I also recommend takingdigestive enzymes with meals to help breakdown any difficult to digest foods. There are some foods and supplements that help to heal and seal the junctions in the gut, such as bone broth, increasing healthy fats, l-glutamine powder anddeglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL).
diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, I follow a specific autoimmune protocol with them that involves eliminating more foods for a period of time. Now that spring is here, you mayencounter many coaches and practitioners trying to sell the latest shakes, detoxes, diets, cleanses etc. However, many of these protocols do not focus on food quality or nutrient density. Therefore, many cause more harm than good. If your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize it as food, it probably isn’t. Stick to eating real food, and preserve the health of your gut! Chronic stress also contributes to a leaky gut, so be sure to take time out each day to nurture your inner child! Now that spring is finally arriving, getting outside to play isa great way to nurture your mind, body, and soul! Walking, hiking, biking, or playing with children outside each day can help tremendously with chronic stress. Wish you all things happy and healthy,

The MIRACLE of S p r i n g & Embracing Awareness of Cycles: a shamanic healing practice... by Wendy Ball hose of us who live in the East are coming out of a long and very cold winter. Each sign of new life in the bushes and sprouting from the ground seems nothing short of miraculous after a winter that some of us thought would never end. And yet winter inevitably gives way to spring and new life. The warmth and color and fragrance of this time of year intoxicate us and renew faith in our ability to endure difficult and barren times.

new moon brings new energy that grows to fulfillment at the time of the full moon, which then is integrated and releases to new possibilities at the time of the next new moon. Growth begins in the spring, burgeons and flourishes and comes to a peak in the summer, and begins to gather into itself, releasing it's outward manifestation in the fall, to become dormant and rest in the winter, gathering potential for new growth the following spring. Life cycles, cycles of fertility, circadian cycles - we humans are cyclic creatures. Embracing and developing awareness of how cycles impact, even structure our lives, can be comforting or reassuring, helping us orient. There is a time to build and grow a life, a family, a career; and there is a time to take life at a slower pace, to let ones children go, to let go of a career or begin to harvest it and share the gifts with others.
Part of the shamanic world view is a deep and abiding connection with cycles. One that each of us is intimately connected with is our breath: breath in, breath out; breath in, breath out. There is magic in pausing to notice Embracing the dynamic of releasing and bringing in, can be a the moment of stillness that valuable healing and spiritual practice. and mulch it, digest it, transform it. Or light your toothpick in a candle flame and let the energy of fire release your heavy energy. Now take a moment to think about what you want to bring in to your life. Is it energy, or self-acceptance, or a feeling of being able to move freely toward what you want? Use your breath to blow this into a stone. Place it on the earth and ask her to help this wish germinate, take root, and grow. Or use your breath to blow your wish into a toothpick and allow the transformative power of fire as you light it in a candle flame give your wish wings. Don't underestimate the power of consciously and prayerfully identifying what wants to be released, what wants to be brought in, and finding a way to symbolically do that. Where there has been trauma or chronic stress it can be difficult to relax into and trust a cyclic perspective. One can experience fear that lows will last forever. Highs are sought in ways that send our mind/bodies further out of whack. Almost all of us these days suffer from some degree of chronic stress. Before we can become available to a more natural relationship with life we may need to adopt practices that allow our nervous systems to re-set, that allow us to relax and feel safe in the moment. This is why meditation is so valuable for those who can do it. Those of us who can't are like a cat up a tree that is spooked and glued to the branch it is clinging to. It takes a lot of patient soothing talk to get a cat out of a tree. Likewise with ourselves, it takes deliberate self-soothing to bring ourselves back into balance. Cultivating healthy self-soothing practices can be a life-saver. Belly breathing, hands on connection with heart and belly, forms of conscious connection with the earth, conscious focus on a soothing activity, soothing selftalk. There are so many ways to re-set, but one has to be willing to tear oneself out of the magnetic grasp of fear-based reaction and re-focus on action and thought that supports one to come down out of the tree. Finally, acknowledging self for any and each instance of attitude and behavior that supports healthy re-balancing is as good as 1/2 price off the second effort.

The Emotion Code “I have witnessed profound healing using the Emotion Code. In one case, a female patient was having years marital discord with her husband and upon releasing thirty three generations of the emotion “unsupported” she suddenly noticed how wonderful they were getting along. What used to take years of therapy to heal can now be accomplished in an instant. The Emotion Code can be done remotely as well with the practitioner in a completely different country from the patient/client, which makes it very practical and convenient.” by Dr. Karen Kan ost people are aware these days that emotional stress can cause or contribute to physical illness. For decades people have gone through psychotherapy and counseling to heal from symptoms of depression, anxiety and general unhappiness by talking about their problems. Having an empathetic counselor helps validate their emotions and helps them feel understood and supported. More recently, Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as Tapping, has been popularized by wellness and spiritual teachers worldwide as a way to release trapped energy behind uncomfortable emotions. By tapping on acupuncture points while a person expresses the emotion, he can release the intensity of the emotion. For many people, the results are instantaneous.
M
So what happens when you don’t know you have emotional baggage that is contributing to a specific symptom or illness? Say you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a complex disorder I used to have myself, that involves symptoms of chronic pain, insomnia and fatigue. Is it possible to release the fear, anger and sadness that contributed to it or developed from having it? Well, the answer is yes of course, but it helps to first become aware of the so-called negative emotion(s). Many emotions may be buried so deep in your energy field that you don’t feel them or know they even exist. What if you absorbed them from someone else during your childhood or inherited them from your mother or father? In my experience this kind of emotional baggage can’t be as easily healed through talk therapy or tapping. In my holistic medical practice, I use a technique called the Emotion Code, pioneered by Dr. Bradley Nelson, which lets me easily discover and release trapped emotions even if my patient is unaware of them. These include emotions that have been inherited. The Emotion Code utilizes muscle testing, also called applied kinesiology, as a way in which the practitioner can tap into the patient/client’s subconscious mind to determine the trapped emotion and any details surrounding the emotion before releasing it. Of course muscle testing, like most every technique, is not 100% accurate which is one of the reasons practitioners say a prayer or ask for guidance from Source before starting each session. For example, I see a lot of people with autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis resulting in low functioning thyroid and adrenal glands. Using the Emotion Code, I can ask the patient’s subconscious mind if there are any trapped 18 Healing Springs I 13th Anniversary Issue, #79
emotions causing this problem. Eighty percent of the time, the answer is “yes”. Before we even discover which trapped emotion it is, I can ask the subconscious mind to tell me how severe the autoimmunity is in my patient. “On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the most severe, how severe is your autoimmunity?” Amazingly, the subconscious mind will answer with a specific number. Once we’ve determined there is a trapped emotion we can release, we use the Emotion Code chart and muscle testing to determine the exact emotion, who it originally belonged to, and where it is lodged in the body. Within a few seconds, even inherited trapped emotions can easily and permanently be released. I have witnessed profound healing using the Emotion Code. In one case, a female patient was having years marital discord with her husband and upon releasing thirty three generations of the emotion “unsupported” she suddenly noticed how wonderful they were getting along. What used to take years of therapy to heal can now be accomplished in an instant. The Emotion Code can be done remotely as well with the practitioner in a completely different country from the patient/client, which makes it very practical and convenient. Experience the Emotion Code by participating in the Holistic Health Retreat & Conference May 16 &17th at the Lake Clear Lodge & Retreat Center near Lake Placid. "There is a time to adventure heartily into new possibilities, but there is also a need for quiet integration time on the selfcreation journey. Profound experiences can accelerate the journey, but much of the real change happens at slower paces and the places in between. We can have all the peak experiences we want but the real work happens between the peaks, while laying down and integrating on the forest floor. Growers are inch worms. This may frustrate us, but it’s the only way to craft an awareness that is authentic and sustainable. A Blue world to SAVE by David Helvarg, author of Saved by the Sea t’s hard to believe that in the blink of an eye in which I’ve led my life half the world’s tropical corals have died along with 90 percent of the big pelagic (open ocean) fish. Humans have spent the last half-century taking from our living seas while giving back mostly plastic, oil, chemical and nutrient waste. We won’t kill the ocean because the ocean endures with or without us, but if we don’t turn the tide of our behaviors we’ll surely impoverish our own lives and the lives of those who follow.

A few billion years ago, when the Moon was closer to Earth, its tides ripped minerals from the land, turning the primordial seas into a chemical cooking pot that led to the emergence of life on earth. When the tides and continents met they also created friction 10:08 PM that slowed the spin of the planet and lengthened the days of our lives. Now that the Moon has retreated and the waters have slowed, it’s hard to imagine what those early seas must have been like except in a few special places.

One night a group of us landed at the dock in St. Andrews, Canada, at 10 P.M., having sailed across the Bay of Fundy from Maine. The next morning at 8 A.M. we had to climb twenty feet down the now steeply angled dock ladder where the tide had dropped out from under our small ferryboat. Sailing back to Maine, we saw harbor porpoises feeding near big whirlpools in the bay’s tidal bore, where billions of tons of water rush in and out every twenty-four hours. Talk about sea power (and potential clean energy)! In the Southern Ocean, below the Roaring Forties and Furious Fifties but north of the Antarctic convergence, I spent several days the same gray-green color as the thirty-foot seas that broke over the bow and rolled across the deck of our research vessel like Neptune’s angry fists. Forty- to fifty-foot seas, with the occasional seventy-foot rogue wave, are not considered that unusual at the bottom of the world ocean.

I remember flying from California to Washington to ride on one of the Coast Guard’s big icebreakers heading north. As I looked down at the snowcapped northern California mountain ranges, I was reminded of great white-capped ocean waves. Actually, they’re not unlike waves in geological terms, bridging up across the landscape, surfing the magma where the Pacific and North American tectonic plates collide and subside beneath them. Mountains are the rippling breakers of the planet, though functioning in a time frame that makes our species as transitory as mayflies or molecules. Only

evolutionarily hardened species of marine life such as horseshoe crabs and nautiluses have been around long enough to see mountain ranges rise up and erode away again. While there’s a sense of solidity in the mountains, the ocean is in a constant flux from winds, tides, and currents, upwellings and mixings both chemical and biological, both sensuous and predatory. It’s the oxygen pump that never quits, the maker of atmosphere, rain, and fog and the buffer of chemical balances, the paddle wheel of circulating vapors that is the bouillabaisse and the crucible of life, both the soup and the pot it comes in. Some people love the mountains and some people love the sea. Some like the steady companionship of dogs and some the mercurial nature of cats.

Because these are domesticated animal species (except for the cats that choose us), they will likely survive this way-too-crowded nanosecond of planetary evolution we’ve created, along with our meat animals and camp followers (roaches, rats, and raccoons). But can the world’s last wild creatures and places—can the reefs, sea dragons, ringed seals, and mangroves—also survive us? I was not born for peaceful times or calm waters, nor have I seen many. We’re living in the age of global markets and mass extinctions; the birth of celebrity Web sites, YouTube, and Twitter; and the death of sharks, sea turtles, and others of our planetary brethren who were already ancient when the first small mammals left their dirt-filled burrows. While I’ve gone from radical activist to war reporter, private investigator, TV producer, author, and activist again, I do so with a more sober assessment than when I was young, running wild in the streets chanting “Power to the People!—a slogan recently appropriated for a battery-powered Oral-B toothbrush ad. Today I don’t really expect a revolution in either politics or consciousness to radically alter the cascading ecological collapse of our ocean planet. I do, however, note a rising line of ecological mindfulness approaching the declining plane of biological diversity on our water world. Where that X crosses will tell us how much is left to save and restore if we can. I’m not sure it will be enough to turn the tide. All I know for certain is that if we don’t try, we lose. And this salty blue world of ours is too heart-achingly beautiful, scary, and sacred to lose. If you don’t believe me, join the space program, travel out into the cosmos, and look back from the heavens. It’s not God’s green earth—it’s God’s blue marble.

n the last issue of Ask the Practitioner someone requested five health techniques to implement in the New Year. We’ve decided to continue the column answering that question based on my book called the Natural Health Companion. In order to help educate my patients I write about almost 100 different practices that one can work on to improve their psychical and mental well being. The feedback was very encouraging but the question I heard most was: How do I sort through all of this and begin right away? So I came up with what I call the 12 practices to help people get started quickly. These 12 Practices are:

They are the bare minimum necessary for everyone as basic practices. The next four practices—learning, making slow changes, changing the products we use and time management—are the foundations of your lifestyle. They are necessary to keep you on the path and growing. The last four practices—spiritual support, meditation, touch/energy work and Nature—are the foundations of the spiritual life and help to give life meaning and purpose. One of the amazing things about this list is it costs you virtually no money. You can begin reducing stress, walking, changing habits, utilizing the library, meditating, being part of a spiritual community, volunteering, getting out in Nature and managing your time for free. As you begin to see the rewards you might start spending money on healthier food, better products and perhaps body work therapies such as massage, but by then you will see them as wise investments. So many people waste so much money now at their favorite coffee shop every morning, or on alcohol, lottery tickets, going out to eat or bad habits such as smoking. As you change your lifestyle you will find there will be money cleared up to use for your health

Couples Massage Workshop: Awesome, Awesomer, Awesomest!
by Gwendolyn Guarino, LMT ou might argue that there’s just nothing better than a massage session with your favorite LMT. If you’re husband/wife also loves massage, then you may say that actually, the real treat is sharing that special experience in a couples massage. Well in my professional opinion, there is something even better than both!
Y
I had been a practicing massage therapist myself for a few years before I understood exactly what that was. I had been relieving aches, pains and stress for my clients and was so rewarded when they left my office happily transformed. But inevitably, they returned for their next session looking just as worn down as ever. Something had to change!

In order to make solid progress we needed to work with the body’s time-scale and administer massage to target areas at least once or twice each week. If stress-relief was the goal then massage needed to be available, even if for just a few minutes, whenever it was needed. So, I enlisted my clients’ loved-ones. I brought them in for a small group session where I taught the most basic of Swedish massage techniques in a manner that would easily translate for home-use. Here was how to massage the back of the neck when you noticed you partner working late at her desk. Here was something for the forearms to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. And Voila! In 2006 Couples Massage Workshop was born! The information was so intuitive that with just a little guidance I had

clients reporting that they were finally making progress with longstanding issues. And then I had a sweet surprise when I came to understand that truly, the greatest benefit of this experience was even beyond physical relief. It was the connection made between loved-ones. Clients were reporting feeling more supported and cared-for. They were communicating more clearly with their partners during massage trades than they had in years. In receiving massage there is a special opportunity to enjoy the physicality of the body. In our modern world with its limitless distractions, this moment of self-revelation is priceless. Now, imagine adding to that the ability to reconnect with your loved-one. The simple truth is that basic, kind, and non-sexual touch brings us back to reality. And if that reality includes loving feelings for your partner, trading a massage can reveal all.

Couples Massage Workshop quickly became my favorite work. It’s now taught in small group sessions and as private tutorials all over New York State. This year I even debuted an instructional DVD! I had been teaching my Couples Massage Workshop for many years before I had my own loved-one to trade massages with. As much as I believed in my mission to spread the word about the benefits of massage, it wasn’t until I gave and received massage with him that I really understood the affects. There’s no need to take my word for it because the proof is waiting at home for you, today! To expand Gwendolyn Guarino’s vision and bring this knowledge to even more people, Guarino deputed her Couples Massage Workshop video. The DVD is 45 minutes of instruction, is scored by local musicians, and is for sale for $20 through Amazon.com and CouplesMassageWorkshop.com.

An Emerging Field of Health and Well-being of our Animals -
OSTEOPATHY by Lisa Hardies-Hoffmaster hat is osteopathy? It is a way of evaluating and treating disease in humans and animals that has been in use for over fifty years. Human osteopathy began with Andrew Taylor Stills in Missouri in 1874. From there, Dominique Ginaux began to develop osteopathy for horses. According to Ginaux “...osteopathy is an approach to the equilibrium of a living organism and its pathology...and uses various manual manipulations to do so...” It is Janek Vluggen of the Vluggen Institute of Equine Osteopathy and Education who has carried on with this vital work today.
W
What does the osteopathic approach to health entail? Our main goal as osteopaths is to restore balance to the animal so that he/she can self-heal. Osteopathy is an alternative to traditional medicine that allows the body to find its own healing resources.Equine osteopathy is an emerging field in the area of equine well-being where the whole horse is taken into consideration. We observe and feel the whole animal. We observe how the animal moves and take special interest in what is not moving. Overall our hands are our tools. We feel the animal in ways that tells us what is happening physically and

Basically, if the structure is altered in any way, the function or how that structure functions is also altered and vise versa. There are five systems that concerns an osteopath: the vascular system, the nervous system, the autonomic nervous system, the visceral system, and the musculoskeletal system. Since every system of the body is dependent on each other to work efficiently, malfunction of one system can lead to the immobility and decreased function of another. We call this an area of congestion or a "terrain". Let's take a look at how this might happen—starting with an alteration to an organs position and or possibly a bone that has changed its normal position; a decrease in blood supply to that area occurs (congestion) due to muscle contraction directed by the gamma nerves from that spinal segment); this decrease in blood supply alters the function of the nerves to that altered area relaying pain to the autonomic nervous system; that pain leads to change of internal organ mobility and motility; this change in organ function can lead to a change in musculoskeletal function or how the animal moves. This process can also lead to compensatory changes in other areas of the body including behavioral and emotional issues. As this illustrates, it is a vicious circle of compensation that not only keeps the initial problem in place, but may also magnify it. If the osteopath can interrupt this circle by affecting anyone of the five systems that keep it in place, the horse may be able to progress in healing itself. A horse that
bucks maybe trying to tell you more than you think! What is our goal in osteopathy? To clear the "terrain" and to restore balance in all systems thereby restoring the animal's vital force or Chi. Our treatment toolbox includes cranial sacral work, myofascial release, visceral manipulation, joint mobilizations and various manipulation techniques. We also emphasize good temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function, good teeth occlusion as well as good hoof maintenance. The whole body and all its vital systems should be moving and operating in harmony. with no restrictions, creating balance in the animal. Osteopaths also evaluate the animal's social environment, living quarters, nutrition and occupation since these factors can also affect the wellbeing and health of the animal. Osteopathy can and does compliment other alternative approaches (i.e. acupuncture, homeopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine) as well as traditional veterinary practices. Osteopathy prepares the body so that the effect of other approaches can be enhanced. In summary, equine osteopathy can enhance your horses health and well-being and should definitely be considered in their overall care. by Allison Petroski e are grateful for this opportunity to communicate with you, where We join in a state of Higher Consciousness. Any time that you are opening yourself up to a new, higher perspective, you are raising your vibration. Any time you drop your own mental constructs around an experience, you are opening yourself up to release old beliefs and step into a new perspective.
W
This is happening all of your time; in every circumstance you are choosing whether to open up to a new understanding of yourself or to continue to believe in and function in the programming you have lived under in a less conscious state. As a child you are programmed by the beliefs that your immediate surroundings teach you. As an adult, you are capable of reprogramming your brain with beliefs and patterns that are of your choosing. You do not have to be a passive to your reactions- you can choose how you are going to show up to your life, in every moment. Many of you may have already begun to feel the discomfort of continuing to stay in patterns that are no longer serving you. And that is not to make them bad, for they did serve you at one point. However, with the momentum of energy pouring through the planet, clearing the Earth and Human Consciousness, raising the vibration of both, you may be finding yourself in a state of frequent unease. As if the old no longer fits and the new isn’t quite known. This is because linear thinking, from point A to point B does not exist in the same way that you have known it to serve you in the past. As your consciousness evolves, especially in conjunction with the rising awaking energies, your awareness becomes multidimensional. You are perceiving with more advanced forms of observation. You are feeling your way through situations- someone may speak certain words, and you may hear or feel something quite different. You may be challenged by decisions around what to do next in your life, with career or a relationship- you feel one thing, but logically you can rationalize why to do another thing. This is where the chaos is beginning for most of you.
In the coming years, it is very important to learn to deeply connect with that inner voice that will help you feel your way through your life. Logic and rational are useful tools. But with an awakening, you are each looking for deeper connection to that Higher Aspect in you, to your Soul, which resides deeply within you. The chaos most feel right now is due to this shift from logical, masculine, Healing Springs I 13th Anniversary Issue, #79 April/May ‘15

Chaos
forceful thinking, to heart-centered, allowing and feeling. This is an opening to the totality of human consciousness. It is a balancing of the Divine Masculine and the Divine Feminine Energies. The planet has lived in a Masculine dominated mind set for a long time and it feels uncomfortable and chaotic as you forerunners make changes that the rest of the world may not quite be willing to allow at this time. You are opening your heart to your Soul and calling in Divine Feminine. This is to those forerunners, blazing the trail for the Divine Feminine to enter into the consciousness of all human kind, thus creating an Age of Enlightenment. This is to men and women alike; Divine Feminine is being balanced in both sexes. Open yourself up to the chaos that is occurring. At this time, fighting anything will only create more of an attachment to what you do not wish to be experiencing. You cannot fight away, will away, or force away the chaos or discomfort. But you can settle into your heart, breathe in light, and say, “I see you fear (or anger, or sadness, or chaos, or debt, or resentment…) I hear you, I am not going to fight you. I accept you. I accept every part of myself. And I call in my soul to be here with these feelings.” Activate your soul in everything you do. And then release what no longer serves you. If you are angry, call in your soul to be angry with you. If you are sad, call in your soul to nurture you while you cry. Your soul does not want to destroy who you are, your soul wants to be a conscious part of you identity so that you no longer associate life with suffering. So that you can live in the state of grace that is available. The reason you suffer is because you have been taught to believe that you are forced to deal with things on your own, and often times the inner environment of thoughts, beliefs, patterns that you are working from are not very supportive and nurturing to the magnificence who you are. Open your heart to your soul. Surrender to the chaos within, and outside of yourself. To surrender is not to give up or become weak, it is to accept, allow, and support yourself regardless of what is occurring. And you don’t have to do it alone anymore- your soul is here, right now, to be with you. Most people abandon themselves with their own internal judgments. Stand by yourself. Invite your soul in to stand with you. It is already there, you just need to become conscious of it. Eat the bag of cookies- and love yourself through it. Tell yourself that you won’t abandon yourself, your soul is there, loving you, even when you do something “bad”. This is where transformation happens. This is the Divine Feminine coming into nurture and provide for you. This is rebuilding your internal foundation in which your Soul is the groundwork and the mind is a tool to build your dreams with. Many Blessings.

5 Lenses That Will Shift Your Mood from Pissed To Blissed (Excerpted from Bob’s Sima’s AcousticEpiphany: A SongBlog)
by Bob Sima, The Transformational Troubadour nger, disappointment, frustration – most of us spend wrapped up in these emotions. The more we indulge in these negative feelings, the worse our lives become. But what if we can go from pissed to blissed just by taking our cues from music?
A
As a singer-songwriter who travels the world performing and whose inspiration comes entirely from spirituality – what I hear from ancient and modern masters and what I perceive through meditation and spiritual connection – I believe that music can give us new perspectives for transforming our lives. You’ve heard it said that “music is the soundtrack of your life” which means that music can be a teacher in our lives. For example, you might often think that life is piled up against you, but what if it is “Happening for You?” (http://www.bobsima.com/my-blog/5lenses-will-shift-mood-pissed-blissed/.) Click on each audio prompt to hear the lyrics referenced in this article. ) Imagine, it’s Monday morning and you are driving to the airport – tunes cranked, windows down, spring air crisp and full of possibility. You are feeling bliss at its depth, knowing that this day – this trip to interview for your dream job – is the start of a whole new chapter. As you enter the freeway accelerating, you notice that the car is not quite getting up to speed and you hear the dreaded thump thump thump. No! This is not happening. Yes, it is. You are standing on the side of the freeway, tire iron in your hand, staring down at the lifeless flat back left tire with the rim kissing the ground. One-by-one the 18-wheelers are thundering by, making you feel pretty small and insignificant. The 8:40 flight? Might as well forget that. It’s not going to happen because you didn’t leave time for this little disaster. You planned for this trip for years, you built your skills, you upped your game. For what? They are making their decision today and so this opportunity is going to be gone. The flat tire says it all. Deflated. You’ve rapidly gone from blissed to pissed.
for a reason, suck it up, kiddo.” I am talking about a radically different perspective – one that frames the happenings in your life with a whole new light. It’s time to go from pissed to blissed. Feeling bliss can be unconditional--not based on events, but based on a higher perspective. It’s the perspective that views the events, the relationships, the hirings and firings, the ups and downs, the births and deaths – all of it – as your supporting cast that leads to your ascension and rise to a higher level of consciousness. Oh yes! This is a much grander view, a bigger picture, a more powerful story, the soul’s journey. This is the view of the enlightened ones – the path to your soul’s growth – all done within the framework of being the beautiful human that arrived on the planet. It’s time for a shift, a shift in perspective, a new pair of eyes. Here are some New Lenses for you to view your life experience, based on lyrics from my song “Happening For You....” After reading these lenses, I invite you to download the song so that this teaching is activated and reinforced on each listen.
Lens #1there are no coincidences, and there are no misIt’s Happening For You: There is no chance,
takes. Try this: take a deep cleansing breath and think back on a challenging event in your life. Discern, for a moment, what value this event added to your life. The salient ones are guaranteed to pop to the surface in a flash of insight. You can see clearly that it wasn’t as “bad” as originally thought. It actually fed your soul in some way that it needed for ascension. The interesting thing is that it is much easier to see it from the aftermath of the event. LYRIC: “…this can’t be happening to me tonight. Well, it isn’t my friend. It’s happening for you…”
Lens #2Everything is a Miracle: As Einstein said,
Set the Dream, Detach From the Outcome,
“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” Choose everything as a miracle. Why? Because you are one. We are living a great miracle and, with this viewpoint, nothing can be seen as anything other than it is: a true miracle. Applying this is miraculously healing. For example, when someone close to you dies, instead of seeing the loss, think of the miracle that brought your two lives together in the first place. Events and happenings are one great miracle; the fact that you are here is miraculous, as the chances of being born into a body are 1 in 400 trillion. Try this: take a deep conscious breath and ponder the events that had to take place to create your soul in this body: the chemical reactions, the dividing of cells, the strands of DNA, the twinkle in your mom’s eye that attracted your dad, the sonoLiving this paradigm sets you up for continual disappointment and grams, the birth, the growing up, the events all along the way. I am not talking about fram- a miracle, then what is? So, yes, YOU are a miracle, as is everying things to make them look better, like some sort of philosophi- thing you see and experience. LYRIC: “…lifetimes of memories, cal Photoshop. I’m also not talking about the cliché “it all happens rushing rushing rushing at you.” 30 Healing Springs I 13th Anniversary Issue, #79 April/May ‘15 It’s in these moments that we lose hope. We feel totally defeated. Why is it so easy for us to get rattled, to go from blissed to pissed, from serenity to insanity? We often feel that life is a just a meaningless set of arbitrary events which happen to us. Our perspective is simple. We view the events dualistically, as sometimes “good” sometimes “bad.” And it is exactly this attachment-based, dualistic thinking that leads to suffering. When we get what we want, we are happy; when we don’t get what we want, we are not happy. Some days you’re the hammer and some days you’re the nail. So we walk through life with a sense of dread, wondering when the next shoe is going to drop. All the while feeling that life is pretty meaningless and insignificant, and that there is no sense of what it’s all about. No sense of a bigger picture.
Lens #3see pain as a negative. We clearly don’t want
Pain is the Great Awakener: In our society we
anything to do with it. Painkillers are the number one prescribed medication on the planet, for both physical and emotional pain. I’m not advocating against medicine, as it has its benefits and usefulness. But it is through pain that transformation can fully arise. Pain is the great awakener, so have a listen. A pain in your body is telling you, “Hey look at me. I need some care.” Pain in the emotional body or soul is talking as well, so have a listen. Try this: next time you are triggered, depressed, drained, anxious, angry, or hurt, take a deep cleansing breath when a pain arises and just feel it. Be with it. Listen to what it is telling you. It is there for your highest good with a message for you. Breathe, allow, and listen. LYRIC: “…this pain, this thing is gonna have a talking to you…”
Lens #4
It’s a Lesson or a Blessing: Here’s a new way to see, and it’s a win-win because both ways lead to clarity and purpose. Perhaps the flat tire led you to a different job, one that was even better suited to you than you could have ever imagined. So in that case the flat tire was a blessing. However, perhaps that flat tire was a result of a lack of maintenance that was suggested to you by a mechanic just two weeks earlier. Consider now that the lesson is to better listen to the advice of those around you. Try this: go back and look at some of the events in your life that may have been perceived as traumatic and discern the lesson and/or blessing in each event. This practice will lead to gratitude, which is the virtue among all virtues for creating peace and meaning in your life. LYRIC: “…lessons and blessings disguised as disaster...”

Gong Lab with Sound Healer Diane Simpson Feeling Tones for Relaxation & Meditation. The Gong Lab is an experimental sound and vibration group that uses gongs and singing bowls to create a sonic environment that allows the participant to feel submerged in sound. Gongs produce an elemental sound similar to Om or Aum. The Singing Bowls are tuned to balance each of the Seven Chakras. Experiencing these fundamental sounds in a context that envelopes the listener seems to put us in touch with something primal and opens the door to meditation and inner exploration.
