Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole you The Ravens are flying high above. Wings on air and throaty croak open my heart. Ahhh, my utter joy in being alive. Years ago, when first becoming consciously aware of the animals appearing in my life, I wanted to share my gratitude for them. Thanking them seemed too centered on what they did for me, so, I made up an acronym—IAYEIW (pronounced I-You). The letters stood for “I Appreciate Your Existence In the World.” When I’d see a Raven or Hawk or Oriole or Fox, I’d say out loud “IAYEIW, Namaste” while touching my hand to heart, which was full of adoration, then extending it outward towards the animal. I had lost track of this habit until this morning when the Ravens were overhead. Boy, do I appreciate their existence. Ravens differ from crows in that they are larger, typically travel in pairs rather than groups and have distinct shaped tails, beaks and voices. Some believe Ravens represent courage, magic, rebirth, and the blending of human with animal etc…. While I welcome all this literally into my life, and am thankful if Raven brings them, it is also accurate that I appreciate the birds simply for being themselves—their beauty, song and flight while living life according to their own dictates that have nothing to do with me. Shortly after the Ravens left, I looked down at my feet to see a daddy-longleg walking over the grass. What I’m calling grass is actually weeds, all different lengths and uneven. Regardless, the long legs of the spider took care of the unevenness, so that his little body could cruise up above. Next I saw ants crawling along the bottom of the grass. While the bodies of these insects were similar in size, the vast difference in leg length created a contrasting experience of the area. It would be inconceivable to the ant to have such long legs, and the opposite is true for the spider. What’s interesting about being human is the ability to change our perceptions and perspectives. While we may never fly with our own wings, we can fly in a plane giving the ability to see the earth from far above, altering our understanding of the landscape. Even so, we very often forget to use this gift, instead seeing only through the eyes of our individual self as it is right now. While, we all have a way of our own that is most ‘us’ just as the spider vs. the ant, we also have the ability to consciously improve on our innate nature. Most of my life has been spent on “self-improvement.” I’ve recently recognized a lot of the ‘self-help’ movement is based on us needing to be fixed in some way. Even after having that realization, I often fall for the belief that I need repair; seeing it on Facebook, in business articles, in my own mind and so on. While I would like to improve some things about myself and my life, I want to do it from a place of appreciating who I essentially am. This builds on my nature, rather than trying to change it because it isn’t yet enough. Acceptance and change can go together. Albert Einstein claimed “Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” In this vein, we need to own our nature before trying to change, so as not to create conflict by transforming in ways that aren’t conducive to our essence. A brief comment that recently modified a perception of mine was the statement “Your soul is not in your body, your body is in your soul.” I watched a trailer for a documentary about women that photograph wild horses. First of all, I admit to feeling some envy. Photography and wild horses are like proof to me that God exists. In this video one of the women claimed our society places no value on wildness. This statement touched my soul. It put words, very simple ones at that, to a deep feeling I experience. It has always seemed to me that even our efforts to “save” the environment are based on human intervention instead of trusting in nature. Rather than being dangerous and eerie, as the elder, wildness has much wisdom to share. It is a goal to make my life’s work of remembering and reminding the value in wildness, which by definition means, “living in a state of nature, not tamed or domesticated.” While I haven’t completely mastered this, I know it is what I most want; to reclaim the human roots that are connected to all of life, not just our human-cultured one. I will close with a slew of questions. Let them sit in your consciousness and stew before responding. 1). What value do you place on wildness—nature’s and your own? 2). What do you love so much it doesn’t matter what it gives in return? 3). What ideas do you believe in enough to make them your life’s work? Are you literally living and making choices in alignment with them? 4). What affect do your current beliefs have on your experience of life? Lastly, 5). What is your most natural way of perceiving the world, from a spot high above the minutia or down low in the details? Are you able to enhance that essence or do you more often seek ways to transcend it in order to be something different? Please post your answers on our Facebook page and may you find peace in your truth.

Our

Community Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network Upcoming Programs The Saratoga Integrative Medicine Education Network, or SIMEN, has two upcoming programs scheduled. Both will occur at the Saratoga Springs Public Library, 49 Henry St., in the Community Room, and are free and open to the public. The first program occurs on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 6:30 pm and is entitled, “Commanding Consciousness: Experience Profound Transformation through the Power of the Spoken Word!” Have you spent years learning processes and techniques for releasing obstacles but are still finding yourself in similar patterns? Do you ever wish there was way to transform your consciousness while you just relax and allow yourself to experience a shift in consciousness, with no particular effort on your part? Healing Springs I #81, October/November, 2015 6

For 22 years, Kerri Kannan has studied and explored the power of Consciousness and how our consciousness molds our experience. She currently works with people privately and in groups, using her gifts to facilitate positive and immediate shifts in their lives with profound and remarkable results. In this program, you will understand how we are all interconnected and have a direct experience of “One Mind”; Experience a profound shift that you will first feel in your physical energy and then notice in your world; Discover the true power of the spoken word and experience how it can be harnessed to command your own life; Release lifetime limiting patterns of wealth, health, relationships & fulfillment; and Be imprinted with a new consciousness that opens you to positive, fulfilling experiences. The second program takes place on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 6:30pm and is entitled, “The Science of Peace & Happiness.” The one thing we share with everyone on the planet is our desire to be happy. Researchers attribute only 10% of our happiness to external circumstances, so then why aren’t many more of us not happier? In this program, we will discuss what science has been discovering about happiness, and how biofeedback and mindfulness dramatically enhance happiness levels. We will also discuss the choices that happy people make. Happiness is not rocket science, but it is a skill that needs to be acquired, and like all skills, we learn better with instruction and get better at it the more we practice. The pursuit of happiness has the tragic propensity to

bring great misery if we pursue the wrong things. After attending this class, you will learn how to discern worthy happiness pursuits and have fun doing it! The presenter, Bethany Ann Gonyea, is the Founder and Director of Numinous, an inter-faith spiritual organization that specializes in teaching members reliable methods that heighten consciousness to strengthen and inspire lives of service. Numinous is also the sponsor for the Albany Peace Project.

Astrology for EVERYONE

by Arlene DeAngelus very month you have approximately two lunar days that are ‘high’ energy days and two lunar days that are ‘low’ energy days. The ‘high’ lunar days are the time to sign contracts, begin important projects, conclude deals, go for job interviews, move into a new home, apply for loans or credit, etc. On these days you should ‘go ahead -- do.’

E

The 'low' lunar days are times when you should take a break, swim, do favors for others, etc. On these days you should ‘use caution - rest.’ The 'high' lunar days occur when the Moon is in your Sun Sign. The 'low' lunar days occur when the Moon is in the Sign opposite your Sun Sign. As an example: If your Sun Sign is Taurus, then when the Moon is in Taurus, you are at a ‘high’ lunar time. When the Moon is in the opposite sign, Scorpio, you are at a ‘low’ lunar time. The Sun Signs and their opposite Signs are: Aries opposite sign Libra Taurus opposite sign Scorpio

Gemini opposite sign Sagittarius Cancer opposite sign Capricorn Leo opposite sign Aquarius Virgo opposite sign Pisces The monthly Moon Signs can be found in the Ephemeris near the back of the Dell Horoscope or Horoscope Guide magazines or at these websites: http://www.myastrology.net/ast-bin/ephemeris.cgi http://www.cafeastrology.com/2015ephemeris.html

A Rose is a Rose, even when it’s NOT!

The Power of our Minds by Barbara Stevens o, it’s the first day of class, and the professor has a rose on the lectern. About half an hour into the lecture, the fellow in the seat next to me started sniffling. When we left the hall an hour later, I noticed his eyes were red, and of course, as ladies are apt to do, I asked if he was okay.

S

“No, I have a terrible allergy to roses. Even from where I’m sitting, I can feel the effects.” “Oh,” I said “I’m sure if you mention that to the professor, he’ll remove the rose.” The next session, I noticed that the same fellow was in the front of the class, and the rose was only about 2 feet away from him. As we left, tears were running down his face, his nose was noticeably swollen, and he was very much in dis-stress. “What happened,” I asked, “why where you in the front, and even closer to that rose?” “Well, I mentioned my allergy and don’t you know he told me to move my seat to the front! What an egotist! I’m out of this class!” I was amazed. How could anyone be so insensitive to another’s suffering? Why would he move him closer to the source of irritation? Well, I was not going to let this go! He isn’t going to intimidate me! Up I went to talk to this “professor”. I’m sure the look on my face was less than pleasant. “Excuse me, it may be none of my business, but you just lost a student. That fellow has a terrible allergy to roses, and he says you moved him closer to this rose. I’d like to understand why you would do that.”

10

Healing Springs I #81, October/November, 2015

“Allergic to roses? Yes, he told me that. Go take a look at that rose.” I did. I picked it up, smelled it, no smell, felt it…OH! Was I embarrassed! It was artificial. There was not an atom of rose or rose aroma in that artificial flower. That shows the power of our minds. Well, I should say the subconscious mind. It takes everything as reality, with no reason or logic, no time or sequence. And locked inside that subconscious mind are all of our experiences, from the time we are born, (some believe even lives lived before this one). Those experiences are the beliefs, the programs, which run our lives. Some of them are old and obsolete, and we don’t realize that they are still running our lives. We believe the roses are real when they are only a representation of a thought, an emotion, which is effecting a reaction that has nothing to do with current reality. Hypnosis can help you change those programs. It is a way to come to a focused, relaxed concentration, and begin to plant the seeds of a better, more empowered, confident, healthy life. Barbara Stevens is certified by the International Association of Counselors and Therapists in Stress Management, Hypnosis, Pain Management, Weight Management, Sales and Sports Performance, and Emotional Intelligence for Change Management. Having conducted workshops, seminars, and private sessions for over 20 years, Barbara takes great joy in passing on the proven techniques that have worked for her. Her enthusiasm, positive attitude, and energy are easily conveyed to participants, many of whom have commented on the powerful changes they have accomplished. Gratitude

Put your gratitude in motion

the ultimate antidote by Wendy Ball ast year I wrote about how the shamans I visited in Peru seemed to live a perpetual prayer of gratitude to existence to the mountains, the sky, the earth, the animals, the birds.... And their despachos which were bundles filled with symbolic expressions of gratitude carried the energy of ecstasy. The air over these offerings sparkled. For these shamans, gratitude is a way of being in “ayni” or natural harmonious relationship with the world.

Amit Sood, in the Mayo Clinic Handbook for Happiness, encourages people before doing anything else to develop two core practices. One is to whenever possible worry about ones life and ones day 1 hour at a time. He points out that there is very little going on in our lives that cannot be handled 1 hour at a time, and that dealing with things1 hour at a time is far less stressful than worrying about it all, all the time. The other is to do a gratitude practice every day. This is the gratitude practice he recommends: Choose 5 people for your practice today. Pick one of those, visualize them in your mind's eye looking at you with a smile. Send them a silent message saying what you are grateful to them for. Notice what you experience - how you feel. Then pick a 2nd person and do the same thing, and so on through to the 5th person. Take a moment to notice how you feel emotionally and in your body at the end of the practice. Amit Sood explains in the introduction to the handbook that by the time he had completed his medical education in India he had experienced first hand more than one major disaster and had provided medical services to people living in extreme stress. When he came to America he anticipated that he would find most people enjoying happy lives given the greater level of opportunity the average person experiences here. But this is not what he found. He concluded that happiness is a set of skills that Indian culture cultivates and that Americans don't so much have. One of these skills is gratefulness. Richard O'Conner, a specialist in the treatment of depression, emphasizes the need for practices such as gratefulness to actively counter habitual thought patterns that feed depression. Gratefulness does not come to most of us automatically, not in the same way that anxious, doubting or fearful thoughts do. Gratefulness, like other kinds of positive thinking, has to be pursued consciously. We have to choose to focus our attention in this way. It tends to feel good when we do it, and it can be a practice that we come to welcome and move into easily, but for most of use it does not happen on its own. In this sense it is true to say gratefulness is a choice. (See Choosing Gratitude, Learning to Love the Life you Have by James Autry.) Anxious fearful thoughts stick to a wandering mind. The default function of mind is to scan for danger. Many of us find positive thoughts and feelings more elusive. We need to consciously pursue them. It may take effort, but

In this way we actively cultivate happiness. Someone I know, who struggles with depression, chose to do a gratitude practice at the supper table. Some people say grace before a meal. This person chose to take a step back from what can become a barren ritual, and take a minute to acknowledge in a simple way the good things that happened and the small accomplishments of the day, e.g. I’m glad I went for a walk, I feel better for it. I have a lot of respect for this person, knowing that some days they do this practice out of faith and trust that it helps even when it would be easier not to. Please contact author for references. Holistic Thinking

FEELING by David DeWolf ositive thinking has always been a popular topic for selfgrowth. Rightfully so, it can be a powerful ingredient towards manifesting one’s reality. Some may find though that after dabbling in positive affirmations, they lack results. This is because there may be unconscious programs sabotaging our efforts from the start. Additionally, all manifestation of matter requires focused diligent emotional actions to accompany thoughts.

P

There is a common misconception that doesn’t get enough attention with the law of attraction. This is that all it takes is a good thought and poof, the rewards will follow. This is just not the case. There is much more that adds to the picture and a lot of it lies within our emotions. Our emotions are closely linked to our unconscious and become easy pitfalls that we may overlook. The overemphasis on positive thinking can become a hindrance acting as an addiction of avoidance. We cover up important feelings that need to be expressed and released. Equal attention towards feelings and thoughts is a more realistic approach. Unexpressed emotions become stored as unconscious memories in our cells. Our bodies essentially hold onto this stagnant energy and any negativity will attract dis-ease within the cells. The key here is the expression of negative emotions and then letting them go. After this the powers of positive affirmations can root into a balanced foundation to build upon. We won’t be lying to our body, mind and spirit by masking what we truly feel with an overriding positive thought. A healthy life is about balance and moderation in all things. It’s definitely easier said than done but recognizing it is the first step in getting whole again. It’s natural to have bad and good thoughts and feelings. It is part of the full human experience to embody both. The illusions seep in when we’re stuck too far on either side of the equation disregarding the opposition. This should be a red flag to us. Negative thoughts and emotions are a sticky net to get caught in. If we can be fully present with them we find they naturally pass

Dwelling on them will only leave us stuck in the past, recycling in their present illusion. This will do nothing but support anxiety which transfers to fear of the future. Behind the negative the positive always lies dormant waiting for our acceptance to come forward. It is the natural flowing interdependence of opposites. You can’t have one without the other. They rely upon one another to exist. Right now in the present moment is where we are able to observe this clearer. It is the gateway beyond duality and offers a welcoming path into unity. Living present is a constant challenge and becomes a life-long endeavor for us all. Our thoughts and feelings are passing waves we must ride in this ocean of life. By going with the flow of this we become the observers silently watching in the background. Life is a beautiful dance that will be good and bad at times. The wisdom of wholeness lies within the choice to be attached to neither. It is here we find a stillness of unity within. David DeWolf is the author of, “Lofty whims of grace: An arcane journey”. Hypnotic Journey for School Hypnosis can help students step off their old path and change their minds, change their beliefs about themselves, which actually changes their brains and physiology which in turn enables them to change their behavior naturally.

by George Guarino, CH,CI think we would all agree, a new school year can be very stressful, so much is riding on being a success. As we settle into autumn, the learning season, students of all ages are back in school, educators have prepared their teaching plans and expectations are high. So is stress.

I

School systems are famous for relying heavily on conscious-mind learning activities and techniques because they can be, measured, tested and compared between students and schools. If we were simply machines, void of emotion, this might be a good way to go about educating people, but the reality is, we’re not. Students are individuals who have come from various backgrounds with a vast array of past experiences that can both help and hinder performance. Skills, like being attentive in class, asking good questions, taking good notes, being organized and believing in yourself don’t always come naturally. Students’ have doubts and fears, there are stressors at home, and the social pressure of fitting in with new friends and classmates all play upon how successful each student is going to be this year. At the deepest level students and all of us are doing the best we can to keep ourselves safe and protected, causing behaviors that can get in the way of success. That protection is based on old memories about how we behaved when we didn’t have all the information needed for a helpful behavior today. An example might be overreliance on Mom or Dad to show love. Neuro-science tells us that memory is a construct. It’s constructed each time we call upon it. Neuroplasticity tells us our brains are biologically engineered to learn. We’re wired to change and to grow; to learn. It’s natural. Neuroscience tells us that repetition leads to automatic behaviors. Repetitively remembering “that’s hard” or “I can’t” is just a belief wired through a neuro-pathway. What if that old belief was rewired to a more resourceful state that brought up feelings of “that’s interesting” or “I’m curious what would happen if”? Do you think those would be better internal questions that would allow a student to have more success? Every thought, experience, concept or idea that we have has an effect in our brain. When we think of something, we actually light up a set of neurons in our brain. The more frequently we have that thought and sense the emotions associated with it, the more worn the neuro-pathway becomes. The principle of NeuroScientist Hebb’s Law states in its simplified form: neurons that 14 Healing Springs I #81, October/November, 2015

fire together, wire together. So, the great news is that when neurons stop firing together new pathways emerge. As we step off the path we’ve been walking along, we begin taking a new path. The old path soon becomes overgrown and the new path becomes natural to take, especially if there are signs that point the way and make it easy. The obvious, first thing to do is to notice the sign and step off the old path. Why haven’t we done this already? Because we thought it was going to be hard, but it isn’t. That’s where hypnosis comes in. Through the power of hypnosis, focused attention, moving through relaxation to have a meaningful experience, we allow the student to work through what was keeping them on the old path while guiding them onto a new path that’s more resourceful. Once on the new path it just gets better and easier to get where they’re going. Isn’t that really the true measure of success? Make a choice and take steps toward attaining that goal. Hypnosis can help students step off their old path and change their minds, change their beliefs about themselves, which actually changes their brains and physiology which in turn enables them to change their behavior naturally. We all want changes and success in our life to be easy, and hypnosis can actually feel as if it is. In fact it is. It can even be difficult to go back to the old way of doing things once a student, of any age, has tasted success. It’s that powerful. The hypnotic journey for school preparation begins with identifying what has been happening in the past, then introduce what the student wants to be doing now as we associate good feelings into success for the future. We’ll discuss what it would be like to be successful in whatever way the student experiences success. Even if this is not academic, perhaps it’s sports or acceptance into a new group, or even advancing to a new game level, finding the new pathway toward success enables us to generalize success into other areas of our life automatically many times because we now know we have the power. We all want to feel calm, comfortable and centered, feeling good about doing what we’re doing. That calm, comfortable confident feeling is the perfect state of mind for success. That is what the hypnotic journey is all about; calm, comfortable confidence and the power to succeed. George Guarino, CH, CI – In practice since 2005 has hypnosis offices in Delmar and Clifton Park. He conducts Hypnotic Journey Workshops for groups and individually. For more information call: 518-256-6549 or email george@HypnosisWorksWell.com

Over time, I began to recognize that this ache rarely left while I was participating in the world that humans created, no matter how well I looked to be “fitting in.” Conversely, it often did feel satisfaction outside in nature, which brought a deep sense of belonging to the earth and the universe as a whole. This happens when being welcomed by a tree as I lean up against its trunk, waving to a bird in flight and seeing its wing move just slightly in response, or walking through the woods where the leaves dance hello. It feels now as though that disappointment was self-induced when shutting myself off from the life of nature. The longing in my soul was requesting for me to interact with all living beings—trees, plants, domestic and wild animals. It had asked me to delve deep in to my core and engage all my senses. Not only the primary five, but also another sense that comes into play when the other five are heightened. I call it my wild sense, or ancient self. This name because it feels to me like a part of human nature that has always been in us. We needed it to stay keenly aware of danger and to find safety. Now instead of engaging this sense, we have built houses and buildings to protect us. In doing so, as is usually the case with protection of any kind, we also shut off from nature and separated ourselves from the very life that supports us. Long into contemplating the subject, I received the Wilderness Awareness School’s newsletter, in which they wrote;

by Katrina Clay s a child, I felt a deep sense of disappointment. Instead of investigating ways to feel love for the world, I spent most of my first 35 years figuring out how to better fit in— believing that would alleviate the dissatisfaction. I learned, or at least subscribed to, the notion that there was something fundamentally wrong with me, and that it should be overcome.

“According to best estimates, we have been biologically Anatomically Modern Humans for around 200,000 years. We have been fully behaviorally modern humans for 50,000 years. Agriculture really only began 10,000 years

Yoga studio opens Nov. 1 (Reception 10am—2pm)

www.yogaintheadirondacks.com 2 Coulter Rd, Bakers Mills, NY (518) 251-3015 or info@yogaintheadirondacks ago. The Industrial Revolution was over 100 years ago. The Internet was invented 30 years ago. iPhones came out less than 5 years ago. What are the implications of this? We have spent most of our existence as a species as Nature-Connected Bipedal Hunter-Gatherers. We have deep instincts and inclinations to behave in this way. Some of these instincts may even be genetic and biological.” So, how does one go about touching their ancient self? This awareness isn’t really achieved with a technique. Ultimately it happens on its own. Yet there are things to do that will prepare you to become more open to allowing it. I’ve come up with 5 suggestions that have worked in my life.

1

Spend time in Nature. While doing so, become a participant in the outdoors. Pay attention to all that surrounds you and what is happening. What birds are singing? What are they doing as they sing? Where do the chipmunks live, and for what reason do they sound their alarms? Pay attention to the movement of the leaves, and notice which plants grow wild near you. If you are gardening pause from time to time and feel what the plants are doing? Stop before planting something and hold it in your hands, getting to know it as a being. I also recommend being without another human while in nature, and to either remain quiet, or speak out loud and then be silent to allow for a response.

2

Spend time with animals without an agenda. This has quite a bit of overlap with the first suggestion, but is worth its own bullet. As you are with animals, do the same as with the plants. Pay attention to what they are doing and how they feel doing it. They do not use words; instead behavior is their language. Humans so often think we know what is best, that we don’t listen to what animals are saying through their behavior—correcting it to what we want instead. I ask you to simply observe them out of curiosity about their nature. As you walk alongside your dog, imagine what it would be like to walk on four legs, what does is feel like to be always as close to the ground as your cat is, or what is the motivation for digging a hole or singing a song?

Get involved in making, listening or dancing to music. For a long, long time people have been making music and dancing for ceremony, celebration, communication and connection. It is understood across all languages and cultures, although each location has its own preferences and uses. Music and movement allows humans to become aware in a way verbal

language and thinking overlooks. It can give expression to feelings that are otherwise difficult to express. Any kind of music will do. Whatever captures your soul and whisks you away from analysis.

4

Listen to your body. This is all-body awareness. Which means we need to first have reverence for the body we were born with—an undeniable challenge in our society. Yet, we cannot expect entertainment or anyone outside of us to change their ways or opinions. We have only control over our own. This, like much of what I’m saying, is an inside job—clichÊ as that sounds. Look for ways that allow you to feel appreciation for your body. Exercise, eat well, and get bodywork. Once you have a reverence for your body, you will more easily listen to it and trust when it tells you something by putting a knot in your stomach, creating tingles of excitement or when something just feels right in your bones.

5

Let go of what you think you are. Positive and negative labels put limitations on you that you may otherwise outgrow. By dropping any preconceived notions of who you are, you make room for being in the moment and awake to your potential. Labels also put filters on your experience, altering your perception of what is happening. Without knowing ahead of time what and how you are to interact, you are more available to spontaneity. It is easy to blame our current predicament on technology. My guess is that the separation started long before that. Perhaps with the invention of agriculture (the original technology), or the birth of verbal language. Regardless of where it started, my call out to you is to shift your focused attention that technology and language need and expand it so it includes all that surrounds you. Become a participant of life, centered in your body while allowing your ancient, wild self to awaken. Know deeply that you are an integral part of the whole and be aware that you belong—not because of what you do, but because of what you are. And what you are is alive. Enjoy it. It is now Upstate New York's original resource for healing. She received her Shapeshifter Practitioner certification by John Perkins and has taught a variety of workshops of her own creation. These workshops use her drum as a conduit to reach deep within. Also utilizing the help of nature, silence and animals, participants touch their ancient essence, learning how to integrate it into daily physical life. The next one is scheduled for Oct. 24. I have been pursuing what I call, a spiritual path, for many years, without a lot of support. Living in a body that I have largely ignored, has finally caught up with me, but I want to work with practitioners who have a grounding in personal growth. How can I find those kinds of practitioners, who will support me in both endeavors?

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell A laudable pursuit to undertake without support, but as I have learned over time, when living on a corporeal plane of consciousness, the opportunity to learn and to grow comes from community. Support can take many forms. It was accepted for centuries that withdrawal from the world was the highest path, but it is no longer true. The physical is a vehicle for growth and learning, as are the other senses that form a part of our time here. Even illness can be an opportunity for learning and growth. We are an integrated expression of body, mind, and spirit. It is time to be fully in that reality in an integrated way, both as we outwardly engage in the world as well as in an inner awareness of ourselves. As one of my teachers reminds me often, we are spirit having a physical experience. As to the body, would you prefer to drive a broken down, less than well maintained car, or a car that has been inspected, and well maintained? I like a nice car, and I like my body to be nourished, by both the physical supports it requires as well as my passion for inquiry and self exploration. With respect to finding a practitioner that has an appreciation of spiritual work, it is like finding the right teacher. Each relationship offers an opportunity for developing discernment and a deepening compassion for the self as well as for others. In my personal view, the best practitioner will allow you the space to be you, offer what gifts they have, and be a co-creator in observing whether what has been offered, resonates with your needs, while at the same time offering perspectives that will allow you to expand your awareness and your growth. It is important to be clear in awareness, in listening to your inner feelings, your soul mind, as well as your captured experience of this lifetime of learning. Be clear in what you seek, what you want, but also be willing to compromise. Allow for what you want, but open to that or something better!

Chiropractor; Lynn Allison I have been pursuing what I call, a spiritual path, for many years, without a lot of support. Living in a body that I have largely ignored, has finally caught up with me, but I want to work with practitioners who have grounding in personal growth. How can I find those kinds of practitioners, who will support me in both endeavors? To clarify what I hear you asking us is how do you find support and guidance for your spirit as well as learn to take care of your physical body? In the past, spiritual beings have had the luxury of shutting themselves away from the world and living a minimal life focused on spirit. At this time, many who seek a spiritual life also must maintain a working life, often including family, so maintaining a balance of mind, body and spirit is essential. As a practitioner who recognizes we all need a balance of mind, spirit and body to walk through this life well, my entry into the triad is in the body, structure and nutrition. When one accepts the truth that your physical being is a grounded expression of your spirit, it becomes a spiritual practice when you care for your body. Practitioners who are walking this path will recognize this and their role is to help you connect your spir20 Healing Springs I #81, October/November, 2015

Look for the qualities you seek in your practitioners: someone who encourages you to set a path and stay with it, one who cares about your path but does not take it over or insists it be only be their way, one who is honestly on their path. Homeopathy; Claudia Ascione When looking to work with a healing practitioner, select one whose core philosophy is centered in profound truth. We are divinely designed, a complex interplay of energy which has its origins in spirit. Our incarnate life provides a remarkable opportunity for development in all aspects, physical, mental /emotional and spiritual. Many years ago, I met someone who was in great distress . She had profound sadness and many physical symptoms including the loss of her menstrual cycle. I observed her meeting with a very skilled homeopathic physician. He gave her a dose of Pulsatilla. The next time she met with the physician she described that after taking the remedy she felt as if she was in a deep meditation. She felt her body energy change, her menses returned , her depression lifted and she felt drawn to pursue spiritual practices and a new career.

“We are divinely designed, a complex interplay of energy which has its origins in spirit. Our incarnate life provides a remarkable opportunity for development in all aspects, physical, mental /emotional and spiritual.” Experiences like this drew me to the study of homeopathy, because I saw that the remedies ignited movement on many levels, physical, mental/emotional and spiritual. When selecting a practitioner, look for someone who has experienced the profound potential of their discipline, who can support forward movement on all levels. Claudia Ascione, MA.MS. CH. is a practitioner in the healing arts of homeopathy , spiritual counsel, hypnosis, past life and soul awareness and Jin Shin Jyutsu (energy healing). She uses a deeply intuitive and spiritual approach to bring consciousness and clarity to healing concerns. She offers private sessions in Niskayuna, Manhattan and Ardsley, NY. To work on a integrative, holistic healthy lifestyle we need to incorporate the mind, spirit and body into our practices. The result, as you see, is an imbalance leading to ill health. I don't blame you for looking for complementary practitioners that utilize more natural treatments, especially as a first line of defense. Not only that, you want those who practice what they preach, and have developed a degree of personal growth. I would say you are already on the way to finding what you are looking for, since you have begun the necessary first step, which is, seek. You are actively seeking those that can aid you by writing in this question. My advice is: don't stop. Seek and you shall find. Ask you friends, go online, get recommendations, do anything you have to do to assemble your team. Then call them, ask hard questions and follow your instinct. If you like someone go and see how it feels and then you have made an informed decision. Remember, we work for you. You are in charge of your health care. In Western Medicine doctors are considered an authority to be listened to, but in alternative medicine, we are there to work together to a desired outcome. Also, healthy practitioners should be role models that we can look up to and hope to emulate. But honestly, it takes some work to find those you like. I have a whole list of referrals for patients, but suppose I refer you to someone and you don't like them? Not only do we have to find the practitioners, but we have to resonate with them. It would be better to work with someone with less experience you resonate with than one with more experience you don't like very much. So seek, find, inquire, experiment, and eventually you will find those that can help. Gregg St.Clair, L.Ac., www.stclairfamilyacupuncture.com, 518-383-1230.

Healthy Kids , Healthy Brains , & Happy Parents

by Sarah LoBisco, ND he leaves on the trees dazzle with their brilliant and changing hues and the daylight hours continue to shorten. The sunny, hazy summer days are a distant memory now and another school year has begun for children and teachers. As the change of seasons progresses, a change in schedule also occurs in the Northeast. This allows for extended time indoors, due to the lengthened darkness, and more time for catching up on unread books and learning.

T

It can also be a time of frustration for those who feel they don’t have the brain prowess to fully focus on schoolwork, exams, paperwork, or extra leisurely reading. Furthermore, as family members are inside and around each other more, tempers can flare and one’s patience can decrease.

How Chemicals In Our World May Drive Brains to Act Crazy Not to dismiss the societal influences that impact attention span, there are also environmental influences on the brain that can cause a child or adult to lose focus. For example, a 2010 study demonstrated a link between levels of polyfluoalkyl chemicals and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in children. Furthermore, a 2012 review of studies showed a connection between maternal exposure to chemicals and prevalence of autism and ADHD. The authors reported that the chemicals probably exerted negative impacts on the thyroid and the neurotransmitter, GABA, both involved in brain functioning and memory.

Most people are aware that the statistics for emotional, mood, attentional, and nervous and brain disorders are staggering. Unfortunately, the numbers of those inflicted are increasing rapidly, such as those diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder) and Alzheimer’s.

Scientists have also linked pesticide exposure near school grounds to risk of ADHD and other disorders. Furthermore, another study linked prenatal exposure to tobacco smoke and lead to risk of ADHD.

Many are aware of the fact that our brains are on “overload from information.” However, many may not realize this includes unwanted environmental signals that directly impact brain health.

Food additives have also been linked to behavior disorders in many studies. I reviewed this in detail on my website previously. Besides pesticides and chemicals in foods and the environment

affecting our bodies and brains, there’s also the fact that food could have been exposed to radiated areas. This can interfere with one’s hormonal signaling.

• Brain trauma • Hyper or hypo-activity in a brain region • and more!

Finally, there’s the issue of soil being contaminated with metals, leading to all sorts of emotional, hormonal, and health issues. For example, mercury and cadmium have been linked to varying levels of thyroid hormones in the body.

The good news is, that even though the list of factors seems long and overwhelming, for the most part five basic steps can cause a lot of positive effects on the brain and result in correcting many of the above factors at once.

Now, I’m not saying that chemicals and foods are the only cause of hyperactivity and stress on the brain, but they could be a trigger. They can also contribute to any of the following underlying factors that I consider whenever someone approaches me for wellness support for emotional health. These include the following:

Simple Steps to Keep Brains Calm and Ready to Learn

• Inflammation and oxidative stress • Genetic variations (such as SNPs related to MTHFR, DRD2, DRD4, COMT, CBS, serotonin transporters (5HTT),) • Nutrition and assimilation • Dietary triggers and deficiencies (including cerebral folate deficiency) • Mitochondrial dysfunctions and imbalances • Hormonal imbalances • Stress & cortisol levels • The Microbiome (gut and body bug interactions with our biochemistry) • Environmental toxicants • Blood sugar levels • Stealth infections • Childhood adversity • Emotional tone and spirituality

Step one of getting to the root of an issue is in knowing what the problem is. Step two lies in knowing all the contributors to the problem. Step three, my favorite, is the action you can take to empower yourself and not stay stuck-in-a-rut.

Here are some simple tips for implementing step three.

1 2

Avoid toxic chemicals around the house and in personal care products and replace with natural and organic ones. Replace conventional foods, as much as possible, with organic or non-GMO foods. Not only will you avoid more pesticides, synthetic hormones, and antibiotics, you may also receive more phytonutrients which modulate oxidative stress on the body. You can use the EWG’s (Environmental Working Group’s) website for low-residue pesticides in produce if you can’t buy all organic. Use essential oils to help with focus, concentration, and to support optimal movement. I discussed how different essential oils, such as lavender and peppermint, can modulate nervous system tone and assist with cognition. Of course, your friendly naturopathic and/or functional medicine doctor can guide you into more specifics if more support is needed after the above basics are implemented. Remember, this information is not to scare you, but to give you action steps to optimizing wellness. If your friends and loved ones don’t know what could be harming their brains, feel free to share this article! A Final Note; You may have been surprised to see my name again in the byline of this wonderful journal! For those who have been long-term readers, six months ago, I made the announcement of my last article submission. I was headed out of state to pursue a position in research and development relating to supplements, nutraceuticals, and herbals. During this time away, I learned an amazing amount of information and feel I have reached a new precision in my ability to fully integrate and implement truly individualized protocols. After a few months, I knew that, although the job was amazing, it wasn’t the right fit. I wanted to take this training back home, back to my clients whom I missed, and to offer this knowledge to others who needed it in real time. So, I’m back in the Albany and Saratoga area. Currently, I’ve resumed doing phone consultations with mostly previous clients and a few new ones…enjoying every minute! I’m still considered an independent contractor when needed for the company, so I’ve got the best of both worlds! Sarah Lobisco, ND, is a graduate of the University of Bridgeport’s College of Naturopathic Medicine (UBCNM). She is licensed in Vermont as a naturopathic doctor and holds a Bachelor of Psychology from State University of New York at Geneseo. Dr. LoBisco speaks professionally on integrative medical topics, has several journal publications, and is a candidate for postdoctoral certification in functional medicine. Dr. LoBisco currently incorporates her training in holistic medical practices and conventional medicine through writing, researching, private practice, and through her independent contracting work for companies regarding supplements, nutraceuticals, essential oils, and medical foods. She has a small, private wellness consultation practice through telephone and Skype. Dr. LoBisco also enjoys continuing to educate and empower her readers through her blogs and social media. Her recent blogs about living naturally in our complex world and on the applications of essential oils can be found at www.dr-lobisco.com and at www.saratoga.com/living-well.
